Natural fibre reinforced polymer composite (NFRPC) materials are gaining popularity in the modern world due to their eco-friendliness, lightweight nature, life-cycle superiority, biodegradability, low cost, and noble mechanical properties. Due to the wide variety of materials available that have comparable attributes and satisfy the requirements of the product design specification, material selection has become a crucial component of design for engineers. This paper discusses the study's findings in choosing the suitable thermoplastic matrices of Natural Fibre Composites for Cyclist Helmet utilising the DMAIC, and GRA approaches. The results are based on integrating two decision methods implemented utilising two distinct decision-making approaches: qualitative and quantitative. This study suggested thermoplastic polyethylene as a particularly ideal matrix in composite cyclist helmets during the selection process for the best thermoplastic matrices material using the 6s technique, with the decision based on the highest performance, the lightest weight, and the most environmentally friendly criteria. The DMAIC and GRA approach significantly influenced the material selection process by offering different tools for each phase. The 3D shear deformation and failure behaviour of a glass fibre reinforced polypropylene in a shear strain rate range of γ ˙ = 2.2 × 10 − 4   to   3.4   1 s is investigated. An Iosipescu testing setup on a servo-hydraulic high speed testing unit is used to experimentally characterise the in-plane and out-of-plane behaviour utilising three specimen configurations (12-, 13- and 31-direction). The experimental procedure as well as the testing results are presented and discussed. The measured shear stress–shear strain relations indicate a highly nonlinear behaviour and a distinct rate dependency. Two methods are investigated to derive according material characteristics: a classical engineering approach based on moduli and strengths and a data driven approach based on the curve progression. In all cases a Johnson–Cook based formulation is used to describe rate dependency. The analysis methodologies as well as the derived model parameters are described and discussed in detail. It is shown that a phenomenologically enhanced regression can be used to obtain material characteristics for a generalising constitutive model based on the data driven approach. In this work, a multi-scale model established from the concept of periodic homogenization is utilized to predict the cyclic and time-dependent response of thermoplastic-based woven composites. The macroscopic behaviour of the composite is determined from finite element simulations of the representative unit cell of the periodic microstructure, where the local non-linear constitutive laws of the components are directly integrated, namely, the matrix and the yarns. The thermoplastic matrix is described by a phenomenological multi-mechanisms constitutive model accounting for viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity and ductile damage. For the yarns, a hybrid micromechanical–phenomenological constitutive model accounting for anisotropic damage and anelasticity induced by the presence of a diffuse micro-crack network is utilized. The capabilities of the overall multi-scale model are validated by comparing the numerical predictions with experimental data. Further illustrative examples are also provided, where the composite undergoes time-dependent deformations under uni-axial and non-proportional multi-axial loading paths. The multi-scale model is also employed to analyze the influence of the local deformation processes on the macroscopic response of the composite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we investigate the effect of the matrix on the mechanical performance of woven carbon fibre composites. More specifically, composites with the same 5-harness satin carbon fabric reinforcement and different thermoplastic matrices, PPS and PEEK, are compared in various mechanical tests (tensile, interlaminar fracture toughness and compression-after-impact tests). The results of tension tests show the influence of the matrix type on the development of cracks in yarns. The cracks in carbon fabric/PEEK composite appear later than in carbon fabric/PPS composite. Their density is also lower. A correlation between cumulative acoustic emission energy and transverse crack appearance in tensile tests is shown. The most evident difference is demonstrated for the Double Cantilever Beam tests and End Notch Flexure tests. The interlaminar fracture toughness for both mode I and mode II is more than 1.5 times higher for carbon fabric/PEEK laminates as compared to carbon fabric/PPS ones. The higher fracture toughness of carbon fabric/PEEK results in its higher residual compressive strength after impact (∼25%). Thus, the study concludes that the performance of textile composites is highly sensitive to the performance of the matrix. Matrices that have higher strength, ductility and fracture toughness lead to structural composites with lower crack densities, better performance in the bias direction, higher resistance to delaminations and higher residual strength after impact. This study describes the properties of thermoplastic polymer composites based on polyethylene (of low and high density) and ethylene-propylene copolymers using various types of conifer needles (pine, spruce, fir, and cedar) as fillers. For the needles, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TGA/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA/FTIR) were performed to investigate their structures and thermal resistance, as required for the composite processing methods. Moreover, structural differences were studied for the analyzed fillers and composite materials (FTIR). The results were compared with the values obtained for composites with conifer wood flour. Composites with conifer needles (pine) had increased water absorption and similar strength properties. However, irrespective of the degree of filling, composites with pine needles were positively characterized by the highest melt mass flow rate (MFR) values and showed a slightly better impact resistance than composites filled with other flours. Thus, shredded coniferous needles with sufficient thermal resistance could be successfully used as fillers in composites. This conclusion was based on thermoplastic polymers as an alternative and/or supplement to the wood flour used in the manufacture of wood-polymer composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In thermoplastic composites, the polymeric matrix upon exposure to heat may melt, decompose and deform prior to burning, as opposed to the char-forming matrices of thermoset composites, which retain their shape until reaching a temperature at which decomposition and ignition occur. In this work, a theoretical and numerical heat transfer model to simulate temperature variations during the melting, decomposition and early stages of burning of commonly used thermoplastic matrices is proposed. The scenario includes exposing polymeric slabs to one-sided radiant heat in a cone calorimeter with heat fluxes ranging from 15 to 35 kW/m2. A one-dimensional finite difference method based on the Stefan approach involving phase-changing and moving boundary conditions was developed by considering convective and radiative heat transfer at the exposed side of the polymer samples. The polymers chosen to experimentally validate the simulated results included polypropylene (PP), polyester (PET), and polyamide 6 (PA6).
