This work presents a simple process for the development of flexible acetone gas sensors based on zinc oxide/graphene/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate). The gas sensors were prepared by inkjet printing, which was followed by a metal sparking process involving different sparking times. The successful decoration of ZnO nanoparticles (average size ~19.0 nm) on the surface of the graphene–PEDOT:PSS hybrid ink was determined by characterizations, including Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The ZnO nanoparticle-decorated graphene–PEDOT:PSS with a sparking time of 2 min exhibited the highest response of 71.9% at 10 ppm of acetone, above those of samples treated with other sparking times and the undecorated control. In addition, the optimal sensor revealed high selectivity for acetone over several other kinds of gases, such as ammonia, toluene, dimethylformamide, ethanol, methanol, and benzene, at room temperature. The gas sensor also revealed a low limit of detection (0.4 ppm), high sensitivity (6.18 ppm−1), and high stability (5-week long-term) to acetone. The response and recovery times of the sensor were found to be 4.6 min and 4.2 min, respectively. The acetone-sensing mechanism was attributed to the formation of p-n heterojunctions, which were responsible for the significantly enhanced sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were grown on a stainless-steel foil by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The MWCNTs were functionalized with carboxylic groups (COOH) on their surfaces by using oxidation and acid (3:1 H2SO4/HNO3) treatments for improving the solubility property of them in the solvent. The functionalized MWCNTs (f-MWCNTs) were conducted to prepare the solution by continuous stir in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and Triton X-100. The solution was deposited onto a bendable substrate such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with a fabricated silver interdigitated electrode for application in a room-temperature gas sensor. A homemade-doctor blade coater, an UNO R3 Arduino board and a L298N motor driver are presented as a suitable system for screen printing the solution onto the gas-sensing substrates. The different contents of f-MWCNTs embedded in PEDOT:PSS were compared in the gas response to ammonia (NH3), ethanol (C2H5OH), benzene (C6H6), and acetone (C3H6O) vapors. The results demonstrate that the 3.0% v/v of f-MWCNT solution dissolved in 87.8% v/v of PEDOT:PSS, 5.4% v/v of DMSO, 3.6% v/v of EG and 0.2% v/v of Triton X-100 shows the highest response to 80 ppm NH3. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been synthesized on thin gold (Au) films using thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The films were evolved to catalytic Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) by plasma argon (Ar) ion bombardment with a direct current (DC) power of 216 W. The characteristics of the MWCNTs grown on Au catalysts are strongly dependent on the growth temperature in thermal CVD process. The MWCNTs were then purified by oxidation (550°C) and acid treatments (3 : 1 H2SO4/HNO3). After purifying the MWCNTs, they were dispersed in deionized water (DI water) under continuous sonication. The MWCNT solution was then ultrasonically dissolved in a conducting polymer mixture of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to prepare for an electronic ink. The ink was deposited onto the flexible and transparent plastic substrates such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with fabricated silver interdigitated electrode using two methods such as drop-casting and inkjet printing to compare in the detection of ammonia (NH3) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature. Based on the results, the gas response, sensitivity, and selectivity properties of MWCNT-PEDOT:PSS gas sensor for NH3 detection are significantly enhanced by using inkjet printing technique. The sensing mechanism of fabricated gas sensor exposed to NH3 has been also proposed based on the swelling behaviour of polymer due to the diffusion of NH3 molecules into the polymer matrix.
