We perceive and understand others' emotional states from multisensory information such as facial expressions and vocal cues. However, such cues are not always available or clear. Can partial loss of visual cues affect multisensory emotion perception? In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the widespread use of face masks, which can reduce some facial cues used in emotion perception. Thus, can frequent exposure to masked faces affect emotion perception? We conducted an emotion perception task using audio-visual stimuli that partially occluded the speaker's face. Participants were simultaneously shown a face and voice that expressed either congruent or incongruent emotions and judged whether the person was happy or angry. The stimuli included videos in which the eyes or mouth were partially covered and where the whole face was visible. Our findings showed that, when facial cues were partially occluded, participants relied more on vocal cues for emotion recognition. Moreover, when the mouth was covered, participants relied less on vocal cues after the pandemic compared to before. These findings indicate that partial face masking and prolonged exposure to masked faces can affect multisensory emotion perception. In unimodal emotion perception from only facial cues, accuracy also improved after the pandemic compared to before for faces with the mouth occluded. Therefore, changes in the reliance on vocal cues in multisensory emotion perception during the pandemic period could be explained by improved facial emotion perception from the eye region. Psoriasis is a skin disease with a complicated pathophysiology that includes an extensive inflammatory cytokine network. Nevertheless, the relationship between psoriasis severity, cytokine levels, and coronary artery atherosclerosis remains poorly understood. Our aim was to find serum markers as potential candidates for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk monitoring in patients with psoriasis. Therefore, we examined coronary artery atherosclerosis via coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), serum cytokine levels via multiple immunoassays, and the patients' psoriasis state. Our findings reveal for the first time that the mainstream psoriasis cytokines interleukin 17A (IL‐17A), IL‐19, and IL‐36 in the sera of Japanese patients with psoriasis showed a linear regression association with the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score. Furthermore, the serum level of IL‐19 was remarkably correlated to Th2‐related serum cytokines such as IL‐4 and IL‐17E. When we investigated potential markers to monitor CVD in patients with psoriasis, circulating cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31) and resistin, but not psoriasis‐related cytokines, were expressed differently at each stage of coronary atherosclerosis by CCTA. CD31 and resistin levels rose dramatically in individuals with psoriasis vulgaris (PV) and noncalcified atherosclerosis. In contrast, CD31 was negatively correlated with the coronary artery calcification score (CACS) in patients with PV, whereas resistin was inversely correlated with CACS in patients with psoriatic arthritis. In conclusion, the axis of IL‐17A, IL‐19, and IL‐36 remains associated with the severity of psoriasis during the chronic phase of the disease, regardless of the application of topical or systemic treatment. Monitoring the levels of these cytokines can accurately determine the severity of skin inflammation. Vinca alkaloids, a class of tubulin-binding agent, are widely used in treating cancer, yet the emerging resistance compromises their efficacy. Hepatoma up-regulated protein (HURP), a microtubule-associated protein displaying heightened expression across various cancer types, reduces cancer cells' sensitivity to vinca-alkaloid drugs upon overexpression. However, the molecular basis behind this drug resistance remains unknown. Here we discover a tubulin-binding domain within HURP, and establish its role in regulating microtubule growth. Cryo-EM analysis reveals interactions between HURP's tubulin-binding domain and the vinca domain on β-tubulin -- the site targeted by vinca alkaloid drugs. Importantly, HURP competes directly with vinorelbine, a vinca alkaloid-based chemotherapeutic agent, countering microtubule growth defects caused by vinorelbine both in vitro and in vivo. Our findings elucidate a mechanism driving drug resistance in HURP-overexpressing cancer cells and emphasize HURP tubulin-binding domain's role in mitotic spindle assembly. Background: Suprapancreatic lymph node metastasis is one of the usual routes for gastric cancer. However, it is rare for the primary lesion to be found several years after resection of the suprapancreatic metastatic lymph node. This is a report of occult gastric carcinoma with microsatellite instability diagnosed 10 years after excision of a metastatic lymph node. Case presentation: A 55-year-old female presented with suprapancreatic lymph node swelling during a medical examination. Gastroscopy revealed no malignancy. We performed an excisional biopsy via laparotomy and histologically suspected metastatic cancer of unknown origin. After nine and a half years, we detected early gastric cancer by gastroscopy and performed a distal gastrectomy. The gastric tumor was pathologically similar to the previous suprapancreatic tumor. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that both the stomach and suprapancreatic lymph node exhibited microsatellite instability, suggesting that the two lesions were of the same origin. Conclusions: This case is considered valuable because there have been no previous reports of gastric cancer with characteristics of high microsatellite instability in which the primary tumor was identified a long time after resection of metastatic lesions. Relationship between the temperature of the electric field treatment (EFT) and the improvement of the effective thermal conductivity (TC) in the out‐of‐plane direction of the carbon nanofiber (CNF)/cured silicone rubber composite sheet was investigated to elucidate the appropriate operation of the EFT. Two types of silicone rubber precursors, with viscosities of 1.3 and 58 Pa∙s, were used. The effective TC gradually increased as the temperature during EFT increased from 40 to 80 °C. However, beyond 80 °C, the effective TC started to decrease and reached the same value as that of the sheet without EFT at 100 °C. This trend was observed regardless of the rubber species or CNF content. The influence of the EFT temperature was also discussed regarding the temperature dependency of the viscoelastic properties: storage modulus, loss modulus, and complex viscosity of the uncured precursor solution. When the temperatures were set at 80 °C, no significant changes were observed in the three‐viscoelastic properties for 60 min. On the other hand, a significant increase in the viscoelastic properties was observed after 10 min at 100 °C because of the start of the curing reaction, which supported the relationship between the temperature of the EFT and effective TC. The objective of this study was to examine the composting characteristics of a mixture of golden mussels collected in the Kanto region of Japan in 2019 and dairy cow manure in order to determine a treatment method for golden mussels after their extermination. To examine the characteristics of golden mussels, two experiments were carried out. (1) Nylon-bag experiment to clarify the specific degradability of golden mussels, and (2) Mixed composting experiment to clarify the properties of compost by mixing golden mussels and dairy cow manure at a predetermined ratio, using 10-L-volume fermenters. In the nylon-bag experiment, the organic matter degradation ratio of golden mussels reached 60% in the dairy cow manure compost. In the mixed composting experiment, the composting substrate based on dairy cow manure was mixed with golden mussels at the mixing ratio of 0%, 10%, 30%, and 50%. Our results showed that the organic matter decomposition rates ranged from 21.7 to 31.4%, indicating good progress of the composting process. The calcium concentration in the compost was higher with a higher mixing ratio of the golden mussel mixture. Moreover, the results of a 21-day plant harm test using the Japanese mustard spinach showed no harms due to the toxic substance, and the odor levels decreased below the environmental regulatory limits of 20 of odor index by composting and drying. Therefore, it was concluded that composting is one of the effective methods for the treatment of exterminated golden mussels. Tardigrades are small aquatic invertebrates known for their remarkable tolerance to diverse extreme stresses. To elucidate the in vivo mechanisms underlying this extraordinary resilience, methods for genetically manipulating tardigrades have long been desired. Despite our prior success in somatic cell gene editing by microinjecting Cas9 ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) into the body cavity of tardigrades, the generation of gene-edited individuals remained elusive. In this study, employing an extremotolerant parthenogenetic tardigrade species, Ramazzottius varieornatus, we established conditions that led to the generation of gene-edited tardigrade individuals. Drawing inspiration from the direct parental CRISPR (DIPA-CRISPR) technique employed in several insects, we simply injected a concentrated Cas9 RNP solution into the body cavity of parental females shortly before their initial oviposition. This approach yielded gene-edited G0 progeny. Notably, only a single allele was predominantly detected at the target locus for each G0 individual, indicative of homozygous mutations. By co-injecting single-stranded oligodeoxynucleotides (ssODNs) with Cas9 RNPs, we achieved the generation of homozygously knocked-in G0 progeny, and these edited alleles were inherited by G1/G2 progeny. This is the first example of heritable gene editing in the entire phylum of Tardigrada. This establishment of a straightforward method for generating homozygous knockout/knock-in individuals not only facilitates in vivo analyses of the molecular mechanisms underpinning extreme tolerance, but also opens up avenues for exploring various topics, including Evo-Devo, in tardigrades. Tardigrades can survive hostile environments such as desiccation by adopting a state of anhydrobiosis. Numerous tardigrade species have been described thus far, and recent genome and transcriptome analyses revealed that several distinct strategies were employed to cope with harsh environments depending on the evolutionary lineages. Detailed analyses at the cellular and subcellular levels are essential to complete these data. In this work, we analyzed a tardigrade species that can withstand rapid dehydration, Ramazzottius varieornatus. Surprisingly, we noted an absence of the anhydrobiotic-specific extracellular structure previously described for the Hypsibius exemplaris species. Both Ramazzottius varieornatus and Hypsibius exemplaris belong to the same evolutionary class of Eutardigrada. Nevertheless, our observations reveal discrepancies in the anhydrobiotic structures correlated with the variation in the anhydrobiotic mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We provide a Monte Carlo simulation method for a European type option under a regime switching type Black-Scholes model where the volatility is a discontinuous step function which takes $ n+1 $ n + 1 different values depending on the value of the underlying within $ n+1 $ n + 1 disjoint partition intervals. Our simulation method is based on a combination of the Euler scheme which is used in the case that the process is away from the boundary points of the partition intervals and the skew Brownian motion in the case that it the process in near the boundary points of the partition intervals. Historically, there has been a great deal of confusion in the literature regarding cross-cultural differences in attitudes towards artificial agents and preferences for their physical appearance. Previous studies have almost exclusively assessed attitudes using self-report measures (i.e., questionnaires). In the present study, we sought to expand our knowledge on the influence of cultural background on explicit and implicit attitudes towards robots and avatars. Using the Negative Attitudes Towards Robots Scale and the Implicit Association Test in a Japanese and Dutch sample, we investigated the effect of culture and robots' body types on explicit and implicit attitudes across two experiments (total n = 669). Partly overlapping with our hypothesis, we found that Japanese individuals had a more positive explicit attitude towards robots compared to Dutch individuals, but no evidence of such a difference was found at the implicit level. As predicted, the implicit preference towards humans was moderate in both cultural groups, but in contrast to what we expected, neither culture nor robot embodiment influenced this preference. Psoriasis is known as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease due to its chronic inflammation. Studies have been conducted to evaluate the progress of atherosclerotic plaques in psoriasis. However, inadequate efforts have been made to clarify the relationship between atherosclerosis progress in coronary arteries and other important blood vessels. For that reason, we investigated the correlation and development of the coronary artery calcification score (CACS) and the abdominal aortic calcification score (AACS) during a follow-up examination. Eighty-three patients with psoriasis underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for total CACS and abdominal computed tomography (AbCT) for total AACS. PASI score, other clinical features, and blood samples were collected at the same time. The patients' medical histories were also retrieved for further analysis. Linear regression was used to analyze the CACS and AACS associations. There was a moderate correlation between CACS and AACS, while both calcification scores relatively reflected the coronary plaque number, coronary stenosis number, and stenosis severity observed with CCTA. Both calcification scores were independent of the PASI score. However, a significantly higher CACS was found in psoriatic arthritis, whereas no similar phenomenon was recorded for AACS. To conclude, both CACS and AACS might be potential alternative tests to predict the presence of coronary lesions as confirmed by CCTA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tardigrades are able to tolerate almost complete dehydration by entering a reversible ametabolic state called anhydrobiosis and resume their animation upon rehydration. Dehydrated tardigrades are exceptionally stable and withstand various physical extremes. Although trehalose and late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins have been extensively studied as potent protectants against dehydration in other anhydrobiotic organisms, tardigrades produce high amounts of tardigrade-unique protective proteins. Cytoplasmic-abundant heat-soluble (CAHS) proteins are uniquely invented in the lineage of eutardigrades, a major class of the phylum Tardigrada and are essential for their anhydrobiotic survival. However, the precise mechanisms of their action in this protective role are not fully understood. In the present study, we first postulated the presence of tolerance proteins that form protective condensates via phase separation in a stress-dependent manner and searched for tardigrade proteins that reversibly form condensates upon dehydration-like stress. Through a comprehensive search using a desolvating agent, trifluoroethanol (TFE), we identified 336 proteins, collectively dubbed "TFE-Dependent ReversiblY condensing Proteins (T-DRYPs)." Unexpectedly, we rediscovered CAHS proteins as highly enriched in T-DRYPs, 3 of which were major components of T-DRYPs. We revealed that these CAHS proteins reversibly polymerize into many cytoskeleton-like filaments depending on hyperosmotic stress in cultured cells and undergo reversible gel-transition in vitro. Furthermore, CAHS proteins increased cell stiffness in a hyperosmotic stress-dependent manner and counteract the cell shrinkage caused by osmotic pressure, and even improved the survival against hyperosmotic stress. The conserved putative helical C-terminal region is necessary and sufficient for filament formation by CAHS proteins, and mutations disrupting the secondary structure of this region impaired both the filament formation and the gel transition. On the basis of these results, we propose that CAHS proteins are novel cytoskeleton-like proteins that form filamentous networks and undergo gel-transition in a stress-dependent manner to provide on-demand physical stabilization of cell integrity against deformative forces during dehydration and could contribute to the exceptional physical stability in a dehydrated state. Purpose: Early recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmias (ERAT) cause various symptoms and predict worse outcomes after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). This study aimed to clarify whether ablation index (AI)–guided PVI, which is a novel technology of radiofrequency ablation, could reduce ERAT as compared to conventional contact force (CF)–guided PVI. Methods: Consecutive atrial fibrillation (AF) patients who underwent initial PVI from September 2014 to August 2019 were enrolled. We divided the patients into two groups: patients who underwent AI-guided PVI (AI group) and those who underwent CF-guided PVI (CF group). Using propensity score matching (PSM), we adjusted for the patient backgrounds. We compared the incidence of ERAT and late reconnection rate of isolated pulmonary veins (PVs) during second session between the two groups. ERAT was defined as any atrial tachyarrhythmias ≥ 30 s during a 90-day blanking period. Results: A total of 697 AF patients (paroxysmal 51%) were enrolled. After the PSM, both groups included 229 patients. The incidence of ERAT was significantly lower in the AI group than that in the CF group (21.5% vs. 36.1%, P < 0.001). Total 118 patients (25.7%) experienced late recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmias (LRAT) after blanking period. LRAT free survival rate was significantly higher in patients without ERAT than those with ERAT (88.1% vs. 42.0%, P < 0.001). The rate of PV reconnection was lower in the AI group than that in the CF group (45.8% vs. 71.4%, P = 0.028). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that AI-guided PVI was independently correlated with ERAT (OR = 0.415, 95%CI = 0.269–0.639, P < 0.001). This article describes rotor shape optimization of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors to reduce both rotor core loss and torque ripples. The experimental verification by the prototype motor is also carried out to confirm the validity of the optimization. It is clarified that both the rotor core loss and the torque ripples under typical driving conditions can be significantly reduced by optimizing the rotor surface without considerable deteriorations of the other important characteristics. Dermatomyositis (DM) is a systemic disease characterized by chronic inflammation in the skin and muscle. A variety of myositis‐specific autoantibodies (MSAs) are detected in patients with DM. These antibodies are associated with unique clinical subsets in DM. Panniculitis is a rare cutaneous manifestation of DM that most commonly presents as tender, erythematous subcutaneous nodules on the thighs, arms, and buttocks. We herein describe the clinical features of two DM‐associated panniculitis patients with anti‐TIF1 antibodies. Both are female patients and showed characteristic cutaneous features, including heliotrope rashes and Gottron's signs with muscle involvement. While one patient had a posterior mediastinum tumor, another had no cancer. Furthermore, to elucidate the clinical significance of anti‐TIF1 antibodies in DM patients with panniculitis, we analyzed all cases with detailed information on the clinical features, including MSAs. A PubMed search of keywords "panniculitis" and "DM" was conducted. We found 23 cases with the detection of MSAs. A review of these cases and our two cases revealed a predominance of female gender (80%) with a median age of 48 years. Anti‐MDA5 antibodies were detected in 11 patients (11/23, 48%), and anti‐TIF1 antibodies were observed in four patients, including the current cases (4/23, 17%). Anti‐Mi‐2 antibodies were observed in four patients (4/23, 17%). Each patient had anti‐NXP‐2 antibodies or anti‐SAE antibodies (2/23; 9%). Although the pathogenesis of panniculitis in DM remains unknown, differences in pathogenesis of DM‐associated panniculitis according to MSAs may exist. Background and Aims: There are two types of serum uric acid‐lowering agents, the xanthine oxidoreductase (XO) inhibitor and non‐XO inhibitor. We investigated whether febuxostat, XO inhibitor, could produce more favorable effects on coronary endothelial function (CEF) and renal function than benzbromarone, non‐XO inhibitor, in hyperuricemic coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Methods: We divided 21 hyperuricemic patients with stenting for left anterior descending (LAD) or left circumflex (LCX) artery into patients started on febuxostat (F group) and those on benzbromarone (B group). After 8 months, all patients underwent CEF evaluations (acetylcholine provocation test) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for non‐culprit vessels (e.g. if patients received LAD stenting, we evaluated LCX). We compared the diameter ratio induced by acetylcholine and baseline (CEF ratio), thin‐cap fibroatheroma and calcified plaque by OCT, uric acid, oxidative stress biomarkers, and renal function including estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) between F and B groups. Creatinine 2 days after stenting was measured to evaluate contrast‐induced nephropathy (CIN). Results: Change of eGFR was significantly lower in F group (n= 11) than B group over 8 months while the other parameters including CEF ratio were similar. F group showed favorable effects for CIN. Conclusion: In conclusion, 8‐months of febuxostat, XO inhibitor, does not significantly protect CEF but can protect the renal function including CIN in hyperuricemic patients with CAD compared to benzbromarone, non‐XO inhibitor. Electrical field treatment (EFT) using alternating current was investigated for the possibility that it could enhance the out‐of‐plane effective thermal conductivity (TC) of carbon nanofiber (CNF)/polymer composite sheets with high concentrations of filler. Two types of polymers were used as the base: fluorinated polyimide (PI) and silicone rubber. For the CNF/fluorinated PI, the influence of frequency was clarified at 2 kV of amplitude voltage when using a CNF concentration up to 15.0 vol%. As a result, the effective TC was clearly increased by EFT, and the degree of the enhancement of effective TC was obviously greater at 0.01 Hz than at either 100 or 1 × 106 Hz. Moreover, the effective TCs of two types of CNF/silicone rubber were also enhanced by EFT with 2 kV and 0.01 Hz for concentrations of CNF up to 5.2 vol%, although there is a large difference in the preparation methods between CNF/fluorinated PI and CNF/silicone rubber. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the sheets prepared with EFT implied a change in the orientational structure of CNF inside the silicone rubber matrix, although the effect of EFT on the tensile strength was smaller compared with that on the effective TC. Occupational exposure of anticancer agents during their preparation has been recognized as a serious hazard. Closed system drug transfer devices (CSTDs) enable "safe" preparation of agents for medical personnel and ensure a safe hospital environment. However, artificial particles of infusion materials have been reported during CSTD use. Here, the incidence of insoluble fine particles during preparation of anticancer agents using CSTDs was examined. Visible insoluble fine particles were found in 465 (9.4%) of 4948 treatment cases at Ehime University Hospital with CSTD use. Contaminants occurred more frequently during preparation of monoclonal antibodies than cytotoxic anticancer agents (19.4% vs. 4.1%, respectively, P < 0.01). A similar survey was conducted at nine hospitals to investigate the incidence of insoluble fine particles with or without CSTDs. Insoluble fine particles were detected in 113 (15.4%) of 732 treatment cases during preparation of monoclonal antibodies with CSTD use. In contrast, the occurrence of insoluble fine particles without CSTDs was found in only 3 (0.073%) of 4113 treatment cases. Contamination with CSTDs might cause harmful effects on patients during cancer therapy. Laughter is a ubiquitous social signal. Recent work has highlighted distinctions between spontaneous and volitional laughter, which differ in terms of both production mechanisms and perceptual features. Here, we test listeners' ability to infer group identity from volitional and spontaneous laughter, as well as the perceived positivity of these laughs across cultures. Dutch (n = 273) and Japanese (n = 131) participants listened to decontextualized laughter clips and judged (i) whether the laughing person was from their cultural in-group or an out-group; and (ii) whether they thought the laughter was produced spontaneously or volitionally. They also rated the positivity of each laughter clip. Using frequentist and Bayesian analyses, we show that listeners were able to infer group membership from both spontaneous and volitional laughter, and that performance was equivalent for both types of laughter. Spontaneous laughter was rated as more positive than volitional laughter across the two cultures, and in-group laughs were perceived as more positive than out-group laughs by Dutch but not Japanese listeners. Aims: The prognostic significance of renal function variability has not been fully elucidated in heart failure (HF). This multicentre, prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of visit‐to‐visit variability in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for predicting patients' outcomes in a real‐world HF population. Methods: A total of 564 patients who had survived HF hospitalization were randomly assigned with a 2:1 ratio to derivation and validation cohorts, and they were then followed after discharge. Using the data for 6 months after discharge, each patient's visit‐to‐visit eGFR variability (EGV) was estimated. In the derivation cohort, Cox regression analyses were performed to assess the association of EGV with a subsequent composite event (death and HF hospitalization). In the validation cohort, the predictive performance was compared among Cox regression models with EGV, those with B‐type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and those with eGFR. Results: In the derivation cohort (376 patients), median age, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), BNP and eGFR at discharge were 72 years, 53.3%, 134.8 pg/mL and 58.7 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively. During a median follow‐up of 2.2 years, higher EGV was associated with an increased risk of the composite event (adjusted hazard ratio [per standard deviation increase in log‐transformed EGV], 1.5; 95% confidence interval, 1.1–2.0). A similar finding was observed in a stratified analysis by LVEF. In the validation cohort (188 patients), better model fit, discrimination, reclassification and calibration were observed for EGV than for 6‐month averaged BNP or eGFR for predicting the composite event when added to HF risk prediction models. Adding EGV to models with BNP or eGFR improved model discrimination and reclassification. Conclusions: EGV predicts HF outcomes regardless of LVEF. Risk prediction models with EGV have good performance in real‐world HF patients. Si nanowires/nanorods are known to enhance the cycle performance of the lithium-ion batteries. However, viable high throughput production of Si nanomaterials has not yet attained as it requires in general expensive gas source and low-rate and multiple-step approach. As one of the potential approaches, in this work, we report the fast-rate Si nanorod synthesis from low-cost powder source by the modified plasma flash evaporation and the fundamental principle of structural formation during gas co-condensation. In this process, while Si vapors are formed in high temperature plasma jet, molten copper droplets are produced separately at the low temperature region as catalysts for growth of silicon nanorods. Si rods with several micrometers long and a few hundred of nanometers in diameter were produced in a single process at rates up to 40 µm s−1. The growth of the Si nanorods from powder source is primarily characterized by the vapor–liquid–solid growth which is accelerated by the heat extraction at the growth point. The battery cells with the Si nanorods as the anode have shown that a higher capacity and better cyclability is achieved for the nanorods with higher aspect ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The perception of multisensory emotion cues is affected by culture. For example, East Asians rely more on vocal, as compared to facial, affective cues compared to Westerners. However, it is unknown whether these cultural differences exist in childhood, and if not, which processing style is exhibited in children. The present study tested East Asian and Western children, as well as adults from both cultural backgrounds, to probe cross-cultural similarities and differences at different ages, and to establish the weighting of each modality at different ages. Participants were simultaneously shown a face and a voice expressing either congruent or incongruent emotions, and were asked to judge whether the person was happy or angry. Replicating previous research, East Asian adults relied more on vocal cues than did Western adults. Young children from both cultural groups, however, behaved like Western adults, relying primarily on visual information. The proportion of responses based on vocal cues increased with age in East Asian, but not Western, participants. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the significance of online research has been rising in the field of psychology. However, online experiments with child participants are rare compared to those with adults. In this study, we investigated the validity of web-based experiments with child participants 4–12 years old and adult participants. They performed simple emotional perception tasks in an experiment designed and conducted on the Gorilla Experiment Builder platform. After short communication with each participant via Zoom videoconferencing software, participants performed the auditory task (judging emotion from vocal expression) and the visual task (judging emotion from facial expression). The data collected were compared with data collected in our previous similar laboratory experiment, and similar tendencies were found. For the auditory task in particular, we replicated differences in accuracy perceiving vocal expressions between age groups and also found the same native language advantage. Although several studies have suggested that catheter ablation (CA) of atrial fibrillation (AF) can improve left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), the predictor of improvement of LVEF is unclear. A total of 401 patients with persistent AF underwent an initial CA between September 2014 and October 2019 in our hospital. Among them, we analyzed consecutive patients with moderately or severely reduced LVEF (< 50%) measured by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) within 2 months before CA and underwent follow-up TTE during sinus rhythm at 6 months or more after CA. These patients were categorized into two groups: improve group (I group) with the absolute improvement of LVEF ≥ 10% at follow-up TTE, and non- improve group (NI group) with the absolute improvement of LVEF < 10% at follow-up TTE. We compared patient characteristics, ablation procedures, and clinical outcomes between the two groups. 81 patients were analyzed, and I group consisted of 48 patients (59%). In the univariate analysis, absence of ischemic cardiomyopathy, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), and absence of recurrence of AF between 3 and 6 months after CA were associated with improvement of LVEF. A receiver operating characteristics analysis determined the suitable cut-off value for LVEDD was 53 mm (sensitivity: 62.2%, specificity: 86.2%, area under curve: 0.762). A multivariate analysis showed that LVEDD < 53 mm was independently associated with improvement of LVEF (odds ratio 2.58, 95% confidence interval 1.29–6.12; P = 0.021). Aims: The impacts of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C) as an anti‐inflammatory and C reactive protein (CRP) as inflammatory properties on the pathogenesis of heart failure were reported. At present, the clinical significance of the HDL‐C/CRP ratio in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) patients remains unknown. Methods and results: We examined the data on 796 consecutive HFpEF (left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50%) patients hospitalized due to acute decompensated heart failure from the PURSUIT‐HFpEF registry, a prospective, multicentre observational study. We calculated the HDL/CRP ratios and evaluated the relationship between the values and clinical outcomes, including degree of cardiac function. The mean follow‐up duration was 420 ± 346 days. All‐cause death occurred in 118 patients, of which 51 were cardiac deaths. HDL/CRP ≤ 4.05 was independently and significantly associated with all‐cause death (odds ratio = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.06–3.20, P = 0.023), and HDL/CRP ≤ 3.14 was associated with cardiac death by multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis (odds ratio = 2.86, 95% CI: 1.36–6.01, P = 0.003). HDL‐C/CRP ratio significantly correlated with the product of the left atrial volume and left ventricular mass index as well as the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion by multiple regression analysis (standardized beta‐coefficient = −0.085, P = 0.034 and standardized beta‐coefficient = 0.081, P = 0.044, respectively). Conclusions: HDL‐C/CRP ratio was a useful marker for predicting all‐cause death and cardiac death and correlated with left ventricular diastolic function and right ventricular systolic function in HFpEF patients. The aim of this paper is to study the simulation of the expectation for the solution of linear stochastic partial differential equation driven by the space-time white noise with the bounded measurable coefficient and different boundary conditions. We first propose a Monte Carlo type method for the expectation of the solution of a linear stochastic partial differential equation and prove an upper bound for its weak rate error. In addition, we prove the central limit theorem for the proposed method in order to obtain confidence intervals for it. As an application, the Monte Carlo scheme applies to the stochastic heat equation with various boundary conditions, and we provide the result of numerical experiments which confirm the theoretical results in this paper. Aims: Heart failure (HF) readmissions with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) are increasing in the elderly, which is a major socioeconomic problem. We investigated the clinical impact of HF readmissions (HFR) on octogenarians with HFpEF. Methods and results: We enrolled consecutive octogenarians (≥80 years old) from June 2016 to February 2020 in PURSUIT‐HFpEF registry. We divided them into HFR group readmitted for HF during the follow‐up period and non‐HF readmission (non‐HFR) group. We evaluated the impact of HFR on all‐cause mortality, cardiac death, and quality of life (QOL). Additionally, we evaluated the factors at discharge correlated with HFR. HFR group comprised 116 patients (21.4%). Among all‐cause deaths, 40 patients suffered cardiac deaths (48.2%). The Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed a similar prognosis between HFR and non‐HFR groups as well as similar incidences of HF deaths. The QOL scores had significantly deteriorated by 1 year later in the HFR group (0.71 ± 0.19 vs. 0.59 ± 0.21, P < 0.001), while it was similar at 1 year in the non‐HFR group. In the multivariate analysis, diabetes mellitus (DM) (P = 0.019), N‐terminal pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide (NT‐pro BNP) levels ≥ 1611 pg/mL (P < 0.001), and serum albumin level ≤ 3.7 g/dL (P = 0.011) were useful markers for HFR in octogenarians. Conclusions: In octogenarians with HFpEF, HF readmission was not directly correlated with the prognosis but was well correlated with the QOL. We develop techniques to construct a series of sparse polyhedral approximations of the semidefinite cone. Motivated by the semidefinite (SD) bases proposed by Tanaka and Yoshise (Ann Oper Res 265:155–182, 2018), we propose a simple expansion of SD bases so as to keep the sparsity of the matrices composing it. We prove that the polyhedral approximation using our expanded SD bases contains the set of all diagonally dominant matrices and is contained in the set of all scaled diagonally dominant matrices. We also prove that the set of all scaled diagonally dominant matrices can be expressed using an infinite number of expanded SD bases. We use our approximations as the initial approximation in cutting plane methods for solving a semidefinite relaxation of the maximum stable set problem. It is found that the proposed methods with expanded SD bases are significantly more efficient than methods using other existing approximations or solving semidefinite relaxation problems directly. Introduction: It has not been clarified how to identify the electrophysiological junction between right atrium (RA) and superior vena cava (SVC). The aim of this study was to identify the electrophysiological RA–SVC junction according to slow conduction or conduction bock and to examine the electrophysiological SVC isolation procedure. Methods: Seventy‐three consecutive atrial fibrillation patients who underwent SVC mapping using a CARTO 3 system were enrolled in this study. Slow conduction or conduction block between the RA and SVC was identified by adjusting the lower threshold criteria of the early meets late function and was described as a white line. The SVC isolation was performed along the white line and with pacing maneuvers to confirm direct SVC capture. Results: Activation mapping (1296 ± 631 points) was obtained in 66 patients (90%) in 4.6 ± 1.8 min. Slow conduction or conduction block was observed in all patients. The threshold for detecting slow conduction or conduction block was 24 ± 8 ms. The location of the electrophysiological RA–SVC junction was higher in the anterior portion (anterior‐septal, anterior, and anterior‐lateral) than in the posterior portion (posterior‐septal, posterior, and posterior‐lateral) (−2.3 ± 6.2 mm vs. 7.1 ± 6.3 mm, p <.001). The SVC isolation at the electrophysiological RA–SVC junction was successful in all patients without any injury to the sinus node function. Asymptomatic phrenic nerve injury was observed in three patients (4.5%). Conclusion: In all patients, the electrophysiological RA–SVC junction determined by slow conduction or conduction block was identified and the electrophysiological SVC isolation was performed successfully and safely. In this study, retentive forces were compared between telescopic crowns (TSC) made with poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) using computer-aided design and manufacturing and type 4 gold alloy using the conventional method. The retentive forces of TSCs were evaluated by performing a pull-out test with primary and secondary crowns. Initial retentive force was approximately 12 N for both PEEK and gold alloy TSCs. The retentive force of PEEK TSC was approximately 6.5 N after 10,000 cycles of insertion and removal. The reduction rate in retentive force was smaller for gold alloy TSC. PEEK TSC displayed greater surface roughness on the primary crown compared to the gold alloy TSC. Surface roughness slightly increased at the cervical margin after repetitive insertion and removal. The retentive force of PEEK TSC was smaller than gold alloy TSC, however the retentive force of PEEK TSC was adequate for stabilizing dental prostheses even after 10,000 cycles. It is unclear whether uninterrupted oral anticoagulants (OACs) are acceptable in elderly patients as compared to non-elderly patients. This study aimed to assess the clinical impact of an uninterrupted OAC strategy during atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation in elderly patients. We enrolled 439 consecutive patients who underwent AF ablation with an uninterrupted OAC strategy at our institute. The incidence of bleeding and thromboembolic complications during the AF ablation or within 4 weeks after and the anticoagulation status during the AF ablation were compared between the elderly (age ≧ 75, n = 144) and non-elderly groups (n = 295). There were 22 bleeding complications in the elderly group and 31 in the non-elderly group (15% vs. 11%, p = 0.162) and 3 major bleeding complications in the elderly group and 2 in the non-elderly group (2% vs. 0.7%, p = 0.336). Thromboembolic events were observed in 1 patient in the elderly group and 2 in the non-elderly group (0.7% vs. 0.7%, p = 1.000). The ACT at the end of the procedure was longer in the elderly group than in the non-elderly group (350 s vs. 341 s, p = 0.007) and the proportion of a prolonged ACT of > 400 s (27% vs. 18%, p = 0.046) was more frequent in the elderly group than non-elderly group. A propensity score matched population excluding the age and body weight, revealed that the anticoagulation status during AF ablation was comparable between the two groups. Thus, in the patients undergoing AF ablation with uninterrupted OAC strategy, bleeding complications in elderly patients were similar to those in non-elderly patients. This study investigated the developmental paths in the use of audiovisual information for the perception of emotions and phonemes by Japanese speakers. Children aged 5 to 12 years and adults aged 30 to 39 years engaged in an emotion perception task in which speakers expressed their emotions through their faces and voices, and a phoneme perception task using phonemic information in speakers' lip movements and speech sounds. Results indicated that Japanese children's judgement of emotions by using auditory information increased with increasing age, whereas the use of audiovisual information for judging phonemes remained constant with increasing age. Moreover, adults were affected by visual information more than children. We discuss whether these differences in developmental patterns are due to differential integration processes for information indicative of emotions and phonemes, as well as possible cultural / linguistic reasons for these differences. Backgrounds: Several studies have shown the serum high sensitive cardiac troponin I (hs‐TnI) a biomarker of myocardium injury, and C‐reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker of inflammation, are associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes. We evaluated the relationship between the hs‐TnI level in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence. Methods and Results: We enrolled 263 consecutive PAF patients who underwent PVI from May 2017 to April 2018. We investigated the difference in the relationship between the myocardial injury marker (serum hs‐TnI), inflammatory marker (CRP, white blood cell) at 36 to 48 hours after the PVI, and early or late recurrence of AF (ERAF; <3 months and LRAF; from 3 months to 1 year) between the radiofrequency ablation group (R group) and cryoballoon ablation group (C group). The R group consisted of 147 patients and the C groups consisted of 116 patients. The serum hs‐TnI level in R group was significantly lower than in the C group (2.33 vs 5.08 ng/mL; P <.001), while the CRP was significantly higher in the R group than C group (2.02 vs 1.10 mg/dL; P <.001). The incidences of an ERAF/LRAF were similar between the two groups. Conclusion: Cryoballoon ablation may cause more myocardial injury than radiofrequency catheter ablation, on the contrary, radiofrequency catheter ablation, may cause more inflammation than cryoballoon ablation. This study aims to develop a clinging device for structural inspection robots, which are expected to be used to reduce the cost of inspection of aging civil infrastructure and industrial structures. In a previous study, an electro-permanent magnet (EPM)-based clinging device that could electrically turn on and off the magnetic adhesive force against steel structures was proposed. In this study, a more versatile design of the clinging device was firstly presented, and a considerable difficulty regarding the activation process of the EPM which might impair the reliability of the clinging device was stated based on mathematical modeling and experiments. The concept of a two-step activation process was then presented to overcome the stated difficulty, and its implementation using a limit switch-based contact sensor was successfully demonstrated through collision tests. DCs and epithelial cell‐derived thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) have pivotal roles in allergic inflammation. TSLP stimulates myeloid DCs to express OX40‐ligand (OX40L) and CCL17, which trigger and maintain Th2 cell responses. We have previously shown that statins, which are HMG‐CoA reductase inhibitors, have the ability to suppress type I IFN production by plasmacytoid DCs. Here, we extended our previous work to examine the immunomodulatory effect of statins on allergic responses, particularly the TSLP‐dependent Th2 pathway induced by myeloid DCs. We found that treatment of TSLP‐stimulated DCs with either pitavastatin or simvastatin suppressed both the DC‐mediated inflammatory Th2 cell differentiation and CRTH2+CD4+ memory Th2 cell expansion and also repressed the expressions of OX40L and CCL17 by DCs. These inhibitory effects of statins were mimicked by treatment with either a geranylgeranyl‐transferase inhibitor or Rho‐kinase inhibitor and were counteracted by the addition of mevalonate, suggesting that statins induce geranylgeranylated Rho inactivation through a mevalonate‐dependent pathway. We also found that statins inhibited the expressions of phosphorylated STA6 and NF‐κB‐p50 in TSLP‐stimulated DCs. Aim: In heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), it is unclear which factors on admission are correlated with long stays. In contrast, acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) in older patients is associated with a high risk of a long stay. To manage older ADHF patients with HFpEF, it is important to reveal the risk factors for a long stay on admission. Methods: We enrolled consecutive older patients (aged >75 years) with HFpEF (ejection fraction ≥50%) who were admitted to control ADHF from May 2014 to April 2016 using the acute heart failure registry in Osaka Rosai Hospital. We compared various factors, including age; sex; body mass index; heart rate; systolic blood pressure (SBP); atrial fibrillation; atherosclerotic risk factors, including dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, smoking and chronic kidney disease; laboratory data, including brain natriuretic peptide and albumin; and medications, including loop diuretics, on pre‐admission between short‐stay (<14 days) and long‐stay groups. Results: The long‐stay group consisted of 122 patients (59.5%). Multivariate analysis showed that male sex, SBP and albumin were independent predictors for long stays. According to the classification and regression tree and receiving operating characteristic curve analysis, all three factors on admission, including male sex, relatively low SBP (<155 mmHg) and hypoalbuminemia (<3.4 g/dL) could well predict the patients that would require long stays (area under curve 0.738). Conclusions: Among older ADHF patients with HFpEF, male patients with relatively low SBP and hypoalbuminemia on admission should initially undergo more intensive management to reduce the length of stay. Aim: The factors correlated with prognosis in heart failure with mid‐range ejection fraction (HFmrEF) is unclear, especially for acute heart failure (AHF) with HFmrEF. Thus, we investigated the factors correlated with the improvement in the ejection fraction (EF) over 1 year in AHF patients with HFmrEF. Methods and results: In Acute Heart Failure Registry in the Osaka Rosai Hospital, we examined 159 consecutive HFmrEF patients out of 1051 HF patients who were admitted to our hospital for AHF from January 2015 to December 2017. We divided them into improved EF (IM) group whose EF improved (≧10%) and non‐IM group who had no improvement. We compared the baseline characteristics, echocardiographic data, medications, examinations for ischaemia, invasive treatments, and clinical outcomes between IM group and non‐IM group. IM group consisted of 21 patients (20%). IM group had a significantly more de novo heart failure, higher serum albumin (Alb), lower EF, smaller left ventricular dimension during diastole, more frequent coronary angiogram during hospitalization, and coronary intervention. Multivariate analysis revealed that Alb, left ventricular dimension during diastole, and coronary angiogram performed during hospitalization were independently associated with the improvement in the EF. In addition, IM group had less rehospitalizations over 1 year and a greater reduction in the B‐type natriuretic peptide level during the follow‐up than non‐IM group. Conclusions: In AHF patients with HFmrEF, we should evaluate for any ischaemic heart disease during hospitalization, especially in patients with non‐enlarged left ventricular and non‐reduced serum Alb. Background: Lenalidomide (LEN), an immunomodulatory drug (IMiD), is currently used for treatment of multiple myeloma (MM). LEN potentiates T cell and natural killer cell functions. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the immunomodulatory effects of LEN remain unclear. We focused on the effects of LEN on human plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), which are the major source of interferon (IFN)-α in the blood and play a central role in innate immune responses. Results: We found that bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor used to treat MM, killed pDCs but that 0.1–3 μM LEN (covering clinical plasma concentration range) did not affect pDC survival or CD86 expression. Bortezomib inhibited pDC-derived IFN-α production in a dose-dependent fashion, but 0.1–3 μM LEN sustained pDC-derived IFN-α production when stimulated with an optimal concentration of CpG-ODN 2216 (3 μM). In pDCs stimulated with a low concentration of CpG-ODN (0.1 μM), LEN enhanced IFN-α production. These results indicated that LEN, when used at a clinically relevant concentration, can potentially enhance IFN-α production by pDCs. Conclusion: Collectively, our findings unveiled a novel target of LEN and extend the repertoire of the drug's known immunomodulatory effects. These effects may explain the low incidence of herpes zoster viral infection observed during LEN treatment compared with bortezomib treatment. LEN may function as an IMiD affecting a wide array of immune cells, including pDCs, leading to amplification of a positive immune axis able to eliminate MM cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence and causes of adult epilepsy in a general Japanese population. We examined a total of 3333 Japanese residents in the town of Hisayama aged ≥40 years in 2012‐2013. The examination was performed mainly at the municipal center for health promotion, but some subjects were examined in their homes, hospitals, or nursing homes. Twenty‐three subjects had a diagnosis of epilepsy. The prevalence (95% confidence interval [CI]) of epilepsy per 1000 was 6.9 (4.1‐9.7) in total, 4.9 (1.3‐8.5) in men, and 8.4 (4.3‐12.5) in women (P = 0.23 between sexes). The prevalence of epilepsy was significantly higher in the elderly (aged ≥65 years; 10.3 per 1000 [95% CI 5.4‐15.1]) than in the middle‐aged (aged 40‐64 years; 3.6 per 1000 [95% CI 0.7‐6.4]; P = 0.02). The major cause of epilepsy was cerebrovascular diseases (n = 11; 48% of the epilepsy patients). More than half of the epilepsy patients experienced the first episode of seizure in older age (≥65 years; n = 13; 57%). The findings of this study suggest the clinical importance of the prevention of cerebrovascular diseases to reduce the burden of epilepsy in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemical state analysis is quite important in X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Auger parameter analysis is one of the useful methods to analyze the chemical state in X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, because it is not necessary to take the charging effect into account for the analysis of nonconductive materials, especially for the simple material systems of a single chemical state. For the analysis of complicated complex systems, here, we developed the Auger parameter analysis combined with the curve fitting calculation using standard Auger spectra. Copper oxide complexes consisting of a mixture of CuO and Cu2O oxide states were formed on copper platelets by annealing in atmospheric ambient. For those samples, by combining the curve fitting using standard Cu, CuO, and Cu2O Auger spectra, two oxide states were clearly distinguished in the Auger parameter analysis. Thus, this advanced Auger parameter analysis is believed to be promising for the chemical state analysis of complicated complex systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors in a previous paper devised certain subcones of the semidefinite plus nonnegative cone and showed that satisfaction of the requirements for membership of those subcones can be detected by solving linear optimization problems (LPs) with O(n) variables and O(n2) constraints. They also devised LP-based algorithms for testing copositivity using the subcones. In this paper, they investigate the properties of the subcones in more detail and explore larger subcones of the positive semidefinite plus nonnegative cone whose satisfaction of the requirements for membership can be detected by solving LPs. They introduce a semidefinite basis (SD basis) that is a basis of the space of n×n symmetric matrices consisting of n(n+1)/2 symmetric semidefinite matrices. Using the SD basis, they devise two new subcones for which detection can be done by solving LPs with O(n2) variables and O(n2) constraints. The new subcones are larger than the ones in the previous paper and inherit their nice properties. The authors also examine the efficiency of those subcones in numerical experiments.
