Mouse models are vital for assessing risk from environmental carcinogens, including ionizing radiation, yet the interspecies difference in the dose response precludes direct application of experimental evidence to humans. Herein, we take a mathematical approach to delineate the mechanism underlying the human–mouse difference in radiation‐related cancer risk. We used a multistage carcinogenesis model assuming a mutational action of radiation to analyze previous data on cancer mortality in the Japanese atomic bomb survivors and in lifespan mouse experiments. Theoretically, the model predicted that exposure will chronologically shift the age‐related increase in cancer risk forward by a period corresponding to the time in which the spontaneous mutational process generates the same mutational burden as that the exposure generates. This model appropriately fitted both human and mouse data and suggested a linear dose response for the time shift. The effect per dose decreased with increasing age at exposure similarly between humans and mice on a per‐lifespan basis (0.72‐ and 0.71‐fold, respectively, for every tenth lifetime). The time shift per dose was larger by two orders of magnitude in humans (7.8 and 0.046 years per Gy for humans and mice, respectively, when exposed at ~35% of their lifetime). The difference was mostly explained by the two orders of magnitude difference in spontaneous somatic mutation rates between the species plus the species‐independent radiation‐induced mutation rate. Thus, the findings delineate the mechanism underlying the interspecies difference in radiation‐associated cancer mortality and may lead to the use of experimental evidence for risk prediction in humans. Purpose: To examine the hypothesis that an increase in response of postmenopausal bone to interval walking training (IWT) depends on baseline bone mineral densities (BMDs). Methods: Two hundred and thirty-four postmenopausal women (64±5 (SD) yr) with no medication for osteoporosis performed 5-month IWT, repeating fast and slow walking at ≥70% and ~40% peak aerobic capacity, respectively, for 3 minutes each per set, ≥5 sets/day, ≥4 days/week. They were recruited from those who had performed IWT ≥6 months before participating in the study so that their physical fitness and lifestyle-related disease symptoms had almost reached a steady state at the time of their participation. We measured BMDs for the lumbar spine (LS), bilateral femoral neck (FN), and bilateral total hip (TH) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) before and after the intervention. We used a multiple regression analysis to identify significant independent factors for increasing BMDs after the intervention as baseline physical characteristics, exercise intensity, and exercise time during IWT were the candidates. For any bone site where the independent factor identified was singular, we analyzed the relationship between the identified factor vs increases in BMD after the intervention (ΔBMD) by the locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS) method. Results: Almost all subjects completed the designated protocol with minimal adverse events. We found that significant determinants for increasing BMDs were the baseline BMDs for all bone sites, as well as age and body mass index for TH (all, P<0.02). Furthermore, the LOWESS trendline between ΔBMDs vs the baseline BMDs, divided equally into 10 bins for LS and FN, respectively, showed that ΔBMD responses (Y) were attenuated as the baseline BMDs (X) increased in the lower 4 bins and then showed a flat line (Y = ~0) in the remaining higher 6 bins for LS and FN. When the lower 4 bins and the higher 6 bins of the baseline BMD were pooled, respectively, BMDs significantly increased by 1.8% and 1.0% in the lower groups for LS and FN, respectively (both, P<0.001) while not in the higher groups after the intervention (both, P>0.3). Conclusions: IWT may be of benefit with minimal adverse events to postmenopausal women, although the effects were greater in those with lower baseline BMDs. Background We previously reported that normalization of motor evoked potential (MEP) monitoring amplitude by compound muscle action potential (CMAP) after peripheral nerve stimulation prevented the expression of anesthetic fade (AF), suggesting that AF might be due to reduced synaptic transfer in the neuromuscular junction. Methods We calculated the time at which AF began for each of craniotomy and spinal cord surgery, and examined whether AF was avoided by CMAP after peripheral nerve stimulation normalization in each. Similar studies were also made with respect to the upper and lower limb muscles. Results AF was observed in surgery lasting 160 minutes for craniotomy and 260 minutes or more for spinal surgery, and 195 minutes in the upper limb muscles and 135 minutes in the lower limb muscles. In all the series, AF could be avoided by CMAP after peripheral nerve stimulation normalization. Conclusion AF of MEP occurred in both craniotomy and spinal cord surgery, and it was also corrected by CMAP after peripheral nerve stimulation. AF is considered to be mainly due to a decrease in synaptic transfer of the neuromuscular junction due to the accumulation of propofol because of the avoidance by CMAP normalization. However, it may be partially due to a decrease in the excitability of pyramidal tracts and α-motor neurons, because AF occurred earlier in the lower limb muscles than in the upper limb muscles. Maturity‐Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a diabetes mellitus subtype caused by a single gene. The detection rate of the responsible gene is 27% in the United Kingdom, indicating that the causative gene remains unknown in the majority of clinically diagnosed MODY cases. To improve the detection rate, we applied comprehensive genetic testing using whole exome sequencing (WES) followed by Multiplex Ligation‐dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) and functional analyses. Twenty‐one unrelated Japanese participants with MODY were enrolled in the study. To detect copy number variations (CNVs), WES was performed first, followed by MLPA analysis for participants who were negative on the basis of WES. Undetermined variants were analyzed according to their functional properties. WES identified 7 pathogenic and 3 novel likely pathogenic variants in the 21 participants. Functional analyses revealed that 1 in 3 variants was pathogenic. MLPA analysis applied to the remaining 13 undetermined samples identified 4 cases with pathogenic CNVs: 3 in HNF4A and 1 in HNF1B. Pathogenic variants were identified in 12 participants (12/21, 57.1%) – relatively high rate reported to date. The digital documentation and analysis of cultural heritage increasingly rely on high-precision three-dimensional point cloud data, which often suffers from missing regions due to limitations in acquisition conditions, hindering subsequent analyses and applications. Point cloud completion techniques, by predicting and filling these missing regions, are vital for restoring the integrity of cultural heritage structures, enhancing restoration accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, for challenges in processing large-scale cultural heritage point clouds, particularly the slow processing speed and visualization impairments from uneven point density during completion, we propose a point cloud completion employing centroid-based voxel feature extraction, which significantly accelerates feature extraction for massive point clouds. Coupled with an efficient upsampling module, it achieves a uniform point distribution. Experimental results show that the proposed method matches SOTA performance in completion accuracy while surpassing in point density uniformity, demonstrating capability in handling larger-scale point cloud data, and accelerating the processing of voluminous point clouds. In general, the proposed method markedly enhances the efficiency and quality of large-scale point cloud completion, holding significant value for the digital preservation and restoration of cultural heritage. Background: Secondary carnitine deficiency in patients with anorexia nervosa has been rarely reported. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of carnitine deficiency in severely malnourished patients with eating disorders during refeeding and assess its potential adverse effects on treatment outcomes. Method: In a cohort study of 56 female inpatients with eating disorders at a single hospital from March 2010 to December 2020, we measured plasma free carnitine (FC) levels and compared to those of a healthy control group (n = 35). The patients were categorized into three groups based on FC levels: FC deficiency (FC< 20 µmol/L), FC pre-deficiency (20 µmol/L ≤ FC< 36 µmol/L), and FC normal (36 µmol/L ≤ FC). Results: Upon admission, the patients had a median age of 26 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 21–35) and a median body mass index (BMI) of 13.8 kg/m2 (IQR: 12.8–14.8). Carnitine deficiency or pre-deficiency was identified in 57% of the patients. Hypocarnitinemia was associated with a decline in hemoglobin levels during refeeding (odds ratio [OR]: 0.445; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.214–0.926, p = 0.03), BMI at admission (OR: 0.478; 95% CI: 0.217–0.874, p = 0.014), and moderate or greater hepatic impairment at admission (OR: 6.385; 95% CI: 1.170–40.833, p = 0.032). Conclusions: Hypocarnitinemia, particularly in cases of severe undernutrition (BMI< 13 kg/m2 at admission) was observed in severely malnourished patients with eating disorders during refeeding, a critical metabolic transition phase. Moderate or severe hepatic impairment at admission was considered a potential indicator of hypocarnitinemia. Although hypocarnitinemia was not associated with any apparent adverse events other than anemia during refeeding, the possibility that carnitine deficiency may be a risk factor for more serious complications during sudden increases in energy requirements associated with changes in physical status cannot be denied. Further research on the clinical significance of hypocarnitinemia in severely malnourished patients with eating disorders is warranted. Dental drilling sounds can induce anxiety in some patients. This study aimed to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the relationship between dental fear and auditory stimuli. Thirty-four right-handed individuals (21 women and 13 men; average age, 31.2 years) were selected. The level of dental fear was assessed using the dental fear survey (DFS). Based on a threshold DFS score > 52, participants were categorized into two groups: dental fear (DF) group (n = 12) and control group (n = 22). Two types of stimuli were presented in a single session: dental and neutral sounds. Cerebral activation during the presentation of these sounds was evaluated using contrast-enhanced blood oxygenation level-dependent fMRI. In the DF group, dental sounds induced significantly stronger activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus and left caudate nucleus (one-sample t test, P < 0.001). In contrast, in the control group, significantly stronger activation was observed in the bilateral Heschl's gyri and left middle frontal gyrus (one-sample t test, P < 0.001). Additionally, a two-sample t test revealed that dental sounds induced a significantly stronger activation in the left caudate nucleus in the DF group than in the control group (P < 0.005). These findings suggest that the cerebral activation pattern in individuals with DF differs from that in controls. Background: Hyperornithinemia-hyperammonemia-homocitrullinuria (HHH) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive urea cycle disorder associated with a high risk of exacerbation of hyperammonemia during the perioperative period. Here, we describe an adult patient with HHH syndrome who developed hyperammonemic encephalopathy secondary to postoperative constipation. Case presentation: A 52-year-old patient with HHH syndrome underwent intrathecal baclofen pump insertion for lower limb spasticity under general anesthesia. The surgery was uneventful, without any increase in serum ammonia levels. However, after surgery, he was constipated, and on postoperative day (POD) 3, he fell into a coma with an exacerbation of hyperammonemia (894 µg/dL). After administering a glycerin enema, he defecated, leading to a rapid decrease in serum ammonia levels to 165 µg/dL. He regained consciousness, and serum ammonia levels remained stable as long as he defecated. Conclusions: We suggest strict management of defecation during the perioperative period to prevent hyperammonemia in patients with HHH syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although several complications of transcranial motor-evoked potentials (Tc-MEPs) have been reported, reports of arrhythmias during Tc-MEP are very rare. Case presentation: A 71-year-old woman underwent transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion under general anesthesia, with intraoperative Tc-MEP monitoring. Preoperative electrocardiography showed an incomplete right bundle branch block but no cardiovascular events in her life. After induction of anesthesia, Tc-MEP was recorded prior to the surgery. During the Tc-MEP monitoring, electrocardiography and arterial blood pressure showed a second-degree atrioventricular block, but it improved rapidly at the end of the stimulation, and the patient was hemodynamically stable. Tc-MEP was recorded seven times during surgery; the incidence of P waves without QRS complexes was significantly higher than before stimulation. The surgery was uneventful, and she was discharged eight days postoperatively without complications. Conclusions: Our case suggests that electrical stimulation for Tc-MEP can cause arrhythmia. Postoperative intracranial complications are rare in spine surgery not including cranial procedures. We describe an uncommon case of pseudohypoxic brain swelling (PHBS) and secondary hydrocephalus after transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) presenting as impaired consciousness and repeated seizures. A 65-year-old man underwent L4-5 TLIF for lumbar spondylolisthesis and began experiencing generalized seizures immediately postoperatively. Computed tomography (CT) revealed diffuse cerebral edema-like hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. He was transported to our hospital, at which time epidural drainage was halted and anti-edema therapy was commenced. His impaired consciousness improved. However, he suffered secondary hydrocephalus due to continuous bleeding from a dural defect and spinal epidural fluid collection 3 months later. Following the completion of dural repair and insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, his neurologic symptoms and neuroimaging findings improved significantly. PHBS can be considered in patients with unexpected neurological deterioration following lumbar spine surgery even with the absence of documented durotomy. This might be due to postoperative intracranial hypotension-associated venous congestion, and to be distinguished from the more common postoperative cerebral ischemic events–caused by arterial or venous occlusions–or anesthetics complications. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a lipid carrier in both the peripheral and the central nervous systems (CNSs). Lipid-loaded ApoE lipoprotein particles bind to several cell surface receptors to support membrane homeostasis and brain injury repair. In the brain, ApoE is produced predominantly by astrocytes, but it is also abundantly expressed in most neurons of the CNS. In this study, we addressed the role of ApoE in the hippocampus in mice, focusing on its role in response to radiation injury. To this aim, 8-week-old, wild-type, and ApoE-deficient (ApoE−/−) female mice were acutely whole-body irradiated with 3 Gy of X-rays (0.89 Gy/min), then sacrificed 150 days post-irradiation. In addition, age-matching ApoE−/− females were chronically whole-body irradiated (20 mGy/d, cumulative dose of 3 Gy) for 150 days at the low dose-rate facility at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES), Rokkasho, Japan. To seek for ApoE-dependent modification during lineage progression from neural stem cells to neurons, we have evaluated the cellular composition of the dentate gyrus in unexposed and irradiated mice using stage-specific markers of adult neurogenesis. Our findings indicate that ApoE genetic inactivation markedly perturbs adult hippocampal neurogenesis in unexposed and irradiated mice. The effect of ApoE inactivation on the expression of a panel of miRNAs with an established role in hippocampal neurogenesis, as well as its transcriptional consequences in their target genes regulating neurogenic program, have also been analyzed. Our data show that the absence of ApoE−/− also influences synaptic functionality and integration by interfering with the regulation of mir-34a, mir-29b, and mir-128b, leading to the downregulation of synaptic markers PSD95 and synaptophysin mRNA. Finally, compared to acute irradiation, chronic exposure of ApoE null mice yields fewer consequences except for the increased microglia-mediated neuroinflammation. In this study, we investigate the time–frequency-resolved resonant photon emission from a molecular vibrational oscillator driven by a monochromatic coherent external field. Using the complex spectral analysis of the Liouvillian, which integrates irreversible dissipative phenomena into quantum theory, we elucidate the fundamental processes of photon emission. Indeed, our analytical approach successfully decomposes the emission spectrum into two intrinsic contributions: one from a resonance eigenmode and another from continuous eigenmodes. These components are responsible for incoherent luminescence and coherent scattering photon emission processes, respectively. Our results show that while spontaneous emission dominates in the early stages of the emission process, coherent scattering gradually becomes more pronounced with time. Furthermore, destructive quantum interference between the two components plays a key role in determining the overall shape of the emission spectrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of chronic low dose-rate radiation exposure on cancers was investigated by analyzing the data of mice experiments conducted at the Institute for Environmental Sciences (IES). This analysis focuses on the differences between malignant lymphomas and solid cancers. The analysis is conducted based on the mathematical model introduced in our previous work. The model is expanded to analyze malignant lymphomas and solid cancers separately. Using the expanded model, the effect of chronic low dose-rate radiation on malignant lymphomas and solid cancers are discussed based on their occurrences, progressions, and mortalities. Non-irradiated control group and 20 mGy/day × 400 days irradiated groups are analyzed. The analysis showed that radiation exposure shortened mean life expectancy for both malignant lymphomas and solid cancers (shorter by 89.6 days for malignant lymphomas and 149.3 days for solid cancers). For malignant lymphomas, both the occurrence and the progression are affected by radiation exposure. The mean age at which malignant lymphoma developed in mice was shortened by 32.7 days and the mean progression period was shortened by 57.3 days. The occurrence of solid cancer is also affected by radiation exposure, wherein the mean age at which solid cancer develops was shortened by 147.9 days. However, no significant change in progression period of solid cancers was seen in the analysis. The analysis showed that the occurrence and mean lifespan are affected in both malignant lymphomas and solid cancers. Porous metallic nanomaterials exhibit interesting physical and chemical properties, and are widely used in various fields. Traditional fabrication techniques are limited to metallurgy, sintering, electrodeposition, etc., which limit the control of pore size and distribution, and make it difficult to achieve materials with high surface areas. On the other hand, the chemical preparation of metallic nanoparticles is usually carried out with strong reducing agents or at high temperature, resulting in the formation of dispersed particles which cannot evolve into porous metal. In this study, we reported the simple fabrication of coral-like mesoporous Pd nanomaterial (Pd NC) with a ligament size of 4.1 nm. The fabrication was carried out by simple solvothermal reduction at a mild temperature of 135 °C, without using any templates. The control experiments suggested that tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) played a critical role in the Pd(II) reduction into Pd nanoclusters and their subsequent aggregation to form Pd NC, and another key point for the formation of Pd NC is not to use a strong reducing agent. In alkaline water electrolysis, the Pd NC outperforms the monodisperse Pd NPs and the state-of-the-art Pt (under large potentials) for H2 evolution reaction, probably due to its mesoporous structure and large surface area. This work reports a simple and novel method for producing porous metallic nanomaterials with a high utilization efficiency of metal atoms, and it is expected to contribute to the practical preparation of porous metallic nanomaterials by solvothermal reductions. During emerging adulthood, individuals' subjective well-being declines owing to challenges regarding identity, work, and romantic relationships. Although the relationships among personality traits, self-construal, and well-being have been examined, studies have focused on personal rather than relational subjective well-being. Furthermore, self-construal's moderating effect on the relationship between personality traits and subjective well-being remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined the relationships among the Big-five personality traits and subjective well-being (life satisfaction, happiness, and interdependent happiness) and the moderating effect of self-construal among 1548 Japanese emerging adults (Mage = 22.24, SD = 1.01). Regression analysis indicated that all aspects of subjective well-being were negatively associated with neuroticism and positively associated with extraversion, independent and interdependent self-construal. Further, agreeableness was positively associated with personal and relational well-being. Independent or interdependent self-construal can moderate the relationships between neuroticism, extraversion, and agreeableness and subjective well-being. Background: In western Yokohama, our hospital and primary care clinics manage adults with asthma via a coordinated care system. We investigated the changes in the fractional expired nitric oxide (FeNO), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and forced oscillation technique (FOT) parameters over 3 years in a cohort of patients in our collaborative system. Methods: From 288 adults with well controlled asthma managed under the Yokohama Seibu Hospital coordinated care system between January 2009 and May 2018, we selected 99 subjects to undergo spirometry, FeNO and FOT testing over 3 years and analyzed the changes in these parameters. Results: Of the 99 patients enrolled, 17 (17.2%) experienced at least one exacerbation (insufficiently controlled (IC)), whereas, 82 (82.8%) remained in well controlled during the 3-year study period. Of well-controlled patients, 54 patients (54.5%) met the criteria for clinical remission under treatment (CR); the remaining 28 patients did not meet the CR criteria (WC). There were no differences in FeNO, FEV1, or FOT parameters at baseline among the IC, WC, and CR groups. The levels of FEV1 decreased gradually, whereas the levels of FeNO decreased significantly over 3 years. The levels of percent predicted FEV1 (%FEV1) significantly increased. We also observed significant improvement in FOT parameters; reactance at 5 Hz (R5), resonant frequency (Fres), and integral of reactance up to the resonant frequency (AX). The CR group demonstrated significant relationships between the change in FeNO and the change in FEV1 and between the change in FEV1 and the change in FOT parameters. No significant correlations emerged in the IC or WC group. Conclusion: The decrease in FeNO and increase in %FEV1, we observed in all study participants suggest that the coordinated care system model benefits patients with asthma. Although it is difficult to predict at baseline which patients will experience an exacerbation, monitoring changes in FeNO and FEV1 is useful in managing patients with asthma. Purpose: Fearful dental patients often cite various dental instruments or procedures as triggers for their dental fear. Thus, visual dental stimuli provoke anxiety. This preliminary study aimed to assess the level of aversion to visual stimuli in dental patients and compare it with that in dentists. Patients and Methods: A total of 43 dental patients (25 women, 18 men; average age, 29.9 ± 13.3 years; patient group) and 13 dentists (4 women, 9 men; average age, 28.2 ± 2.0 years; dentist group) were included. All participants had previously undergone dental treatment. The dental fear level was assessed using the self-reported Dental Fear Survey (DFS). Thirty-two images associated with dental treatment were prepared and classified into three categories: dental instruments, dental procedures, and the dental environment. All participants rated their level of disgust toward each image on a visual analog scale with scores ranging from 0 to 100. Results: In the patient group, the disgust ratings for tooth extraction, dental drilling, and local anesthesia were > 60, which were significantly different from those in the dentist group (Mann–Whitney U-test, p< 0.001, p=0.001, and p=0.001, respectively). The ranking order of the disgust ratings for the 32 images showed significant correlation between the patient and dentist groups (Spearman correlation coefficient, r=0.80, p< 0.001). In the patient group, the disgust ratings for dental impressions and the interdental brush, dental light, and dental chair were significantly correlated with DFS scores (r=0.61, p< 0.001; r=0.47, p=0.001; r=0.41, p=0.006; and r=0.40, p=0.008, respectively). Conclusion: This study revealed that patients have more negative feelings toward invasive procedures than dentists. The rapid development of 3D scanning has allowed us to digitally capture cultural heritage objects as large-scale point clouds, recording their complex internal and external structures. We have developed a 3D multi-view transparent visualization using edge highlighting as visual guide, improving accuracy of perceived depth for reliable visual analyses of the 3D scanned point clouds. When transparently visualizing a 3D object on a 3D multi-view display, the depth information tends to become less distinct. Therefore, we aimed to explore whether emphasizing the statistically extracted 3D edges of the scanned object can enhance the perceived depth of transparently visualized 3D objects. We conducted psychophysical experiments where participants were asked to report their perceived magnitudes of depth for multiple types of 3D structures of cultural heritage presented on a multi-view 3D display. The results indicated that our edge highlighting reduced the underestimation of depth from 46.8% to 34.0% on average. This improvement persisted even when the 3D structures produced an atypical linear perspective, normally caused by reverse depths, where the front and back are reversed. In this paper, we described our mathematical model for radiation-induced life shortening in detail and applied the model to the experimental data on mice to investigate the effect of radiation on cancer-related life-shortening. Our mathematical model incorporates the following components: (i) occurrence of cancer, (ii) progression of cancer over time, and (iii) death from cancer. We evaluated the progression of cancer over time by analyzing the cancer incidence data and cumulative mortalities data obtained from mice experiments conducted at the Institute for Environmental Sciences (IES). We analyzed non-irradiated control and 20 mGy/day × 400 days irradiated groups. In the analysis, all malignant neoplasms were lumped together and referred to as 'cancer'. Our analysis showed that the reduction in lifespan (104 days in median) was the result of the early onset of cancer (68 days in median) and the shortening of the cancer progression period (48 days in median). We described in detail our mathematical model for radiation-induced life-shortening attributed to cancer. We analyzed the mice data obtained from the experiment conducted at the IES using our model. Background: Sensitive gag reflexes prevent dental patients from receiving appropriate treatment. Aromatherapy helps patients relax during dental procedures. However, the effect of aromatherapy on the gag reflex caused by the stimulation of the oral cavity is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate whether aromatherapy reduces gag reflexes during oral stimulation. Methods: In this randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blind, crossover study, the gag reflexes of 24 healthy individuals (12 females and 12 males; mean age: 34.3 ± 9.5 years) were quantified. A standard saliva ejector was slowly guided down the participant's throat to determine the maximum tolerance of the gag reflex, and the insertion distance was measured to quantify the gag reflex. All individuals participated in an aromatherapy session with peppermint essential oil and a placebo session with distilled water. The gag reflex was quantified before (baseline) and after each session. Another measurement was performed using nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation as a positive control. Results: Gag reflex values significantly increased after aromatherapy with both peppermint essential oil and placebo compared to baseline values (paired t-test, P < 0.001 and P = 0.014, respectively). The gag reflex value also increased significantly during nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation (paired t-test, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the increase rate of gag reflex values between the positive control and aromatherapy interventions, but it was significantly lower after the placebo intervention (repeated measures analysis of variance, P = 0.003; post-hoc test, P = 0.83 and P = 0.02). Conclusion: Aromatherapy with peppermint essential oil has the potential for reducing gag reflex during dental procedures. Objective: While mixed dentition space analysis is a common practice in pediatric dentistry, digital models created using an intraoral scanner are not as widely used in clinical settings. This preliminary study used a very small sample size with one reference model and aimed to (1) compare the accuracy of mixed dentition space analysis using a digital model obtained from an optical impression with that of conventional plaster model-based analysis and (2) assess inter-examiner differences. Results: The space required for the mandibular permanent canine and premolars and arch length discrepancy were calculated using each model. The largest significant difference between plaster- and digital model-based analyses was identified when the right arch length discrepancy was considered (-0.49 mm; 95% confidence interval: -0.95–0.03); however, the value was considered clinically insignificant. Significant inter-examiner differences were observed for six items of the plaster model; however, no such differences were observed when using the digital model. In conclusion, digital model space analysis may have the same level of accuracy as conventional plaster model analysis and likely results in smaller inter-examiner differences than plaster model analysis. Purpose: Generation of nociceptive sensory evoked potentials (NEPs) by selective stimulation of nociceptive intraepidermal nerve fibers is a simple technique which could be used as intraoperative nociception monitor. We evaluated the effects of remifentanil, propofol and sevoflurane on NEPs by this technique. Methods: Patients undergoing general anesthesia were assigned to groups in two studies. A-δ fiber selective NEPs were recorded. Study 1: NEPs were recorded at control, under anesthetics administration: remifentanil at an effect-site concentration (Ce) of 1.0 ng/mL (n = 10), propofol at Ce of 0.5 µg/mL (n = 10), or sevoflurane at 0.2 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) (n = 10), and recovery from the anesthetics. Study 2: NEPs were recorded at control and under administration of higher dose anesthetics: propofol at Ce of 0.5 and 1.0 µg/mL (n = 10) or sevoflurane at 0.2 and 0.5 MAC (n = 10). A P-value < 0.016 was considered statistically significant in multiple analyses. Results: Study 1: Remifentanil at Ce of 1.0 ng/mL significantly suppressed the amplitude of NEPs (mean amplitude (standard deviation) of control vs. remifentanil administration: 16.8 µV (3.8) vs. 10.1 µV (2.5), P < 0.001). Propofol and sevoflurane did not suppress the amplitude significantly. Study 2: Propofol at Ce of 0.5 and 1.0 µg/mL and sevoflurane at 0.2 and 0.5 MAC did not suppress the amplitude significantly. Conclusion: The amplitude of A-δ fiber selective NEPs was suppressed by remifentanil but not propofol or sevoflurane. Purpose: We investigated the 90-day mortality rate in elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery and the association of preoperative cardiac function with mortality. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 133 consecutive patients aged 80 years or older who underwent hip fracture surgery. We obtained information for patient sex, age, comorbidities, medications, anesthesia method, left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions assessed by echocardiography, and preoperative brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: The 90-day mortality rate in patients with a mean age of 88.9 years was 7.5% (10/133). More than half of the patients had diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle. There were no significant differences in preoperative cardiac systolic and diastolic functions between the mortality group and non-mortality group. The preoperative BNP level in the mortality group was significantly higher than that in the non-mortality group (p = 0.038). Preoperative BNP level was not an independent risk factor for 90-day mortality (p = 0.081) in the primary multivariate logistic regression analysis but was an independent risk factor (p = 0.039) with an odds ratio of 1.004 (95% CI 1.000–1.008) in the sensitivity analysis with different explanatory variables. Conclusion: The 90-day mortality rate in patients over 80 years old after hip fracture surgery was 7.5%. There were no significant differences in preoperative cardiac function assessed by echocardiography between the mortality and non-mortality groups. Purpose: The use of an endotracheal tube (ET) cuff filled with alkalized lidocaine (AL) can suppress ET-induced emergence phenomena, such as hypertension, tachycardia and coughing, and postoperative sore throat (POST) and hoarseness (PH). The efficacy of intracuff lidocaine may vary depending on the cuff shape, but there has been no study on the effects of a tapered cuff filled with AL. We examined whether intracuff AL suppresses ET-induced emergence phenomena, POST and PH. Methods: Sixty-two patients were enrolled in this study and the patients were randomly allocated to a group in which the tapered cuff was filled with AL (Group AL) and a group in which the tapered cuff was filled with normal saline (Group S). The primary outcomes of this study were changes in mean blood pressure (MBP) and heart rate (HR) at extubation. MBP, HR and the number of coughs were recorded before and up to 10 min after extubation. The degree of POST and the incidences of POST and PH were recorded at 15 min, 2 h and 24 h after extubation. Results: Changes in MBP before extubation and HR before and after extubation were significantly lower in Group AL than in Group S (p < 0.025). The number of coughs at extubation and the incidence of PH at 2 h after extubation were significantly lower in Group AL than in Group S (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.014, respectively). In a field study, the probiotic effects of a freshwater purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacterium (PNSB), Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and a marine PNSB, Rhodovulum sulfidophilum, on kuruma shrimp (Marsupenaeus japonicus) were compared by using two commercially operating shrimp ponds. Shrimp were fed with feed containing 0.01% fresh weight (106 cfu/g feed) of PNSB cells for 152 d. The marine PNSB showed a better performance than the freshwater PNSB in average body weight at harvest time, survival rate (P < 0.001 by Fisher's exact test), and feed conversion rate. The effects of freshwater and marine PNSB on shrimp gene expression were also compared by next-generation sequencing and quantitative RT-PCR. Both freshwater and marine PNSB promoted the expression of several genes related to the innate immune system, including NADPH oxidase, superoxide dismutase, lysozyme, antimicrobial peptides, and lectins, and the promotive effect of marine PNSB was stronger than that of freshwater PNSB. Previously, cytotoxic drugs were the only option for patients with non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the prognosis was poor. However, molecularly targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors represent a breakthrough in the treatment of advanced NSCLC and have improved survival rates. In addition, advances in next‐generation sequencing (NGS) have revealed the landscape of genomic alterations in patients with different cancers, aiding in the development of new molecularly targeted drugs. The patient reported here was a 54‐year‐old woman with left lower lung adenocarcinoma. The lung cancer was staged as T2aN3M1a stageIVA 11 years ago. She had received seven regimens of chemotherapy for 11 years. Among these, pemetrexed (PEM) regimens particularly showed long‐term effects totaling more than 5 years. We performed NGS after disease progression of the seventh treatment. NGS revealed CD74‐ROS1 fusion and she was treated with entrectinib. She has been taking entrectinib for over 20 months now. Herein, we report a rare case of CD74‐ROS1‐positive lung adenocarcinoma diagnosed by NGS that achieved long‐term survival with cytotoxic drugs, especially PEM regimens. While job identity is significantly related to personality traits and adaptation to the work environment, few studies have focused on job identity profile or on its relationships with the characteristics of young adults. This study aimed to identify the identity profiles of young workers in Japan and examine their associations with these employees' personality traits, job satisfaction, work engagement, and emotional impairment. The survey participants were 500 working Japanese young adults (46.6% female; Mage = 26.12, SD = 2.34). The results of the latent profile analysis identified four job identity profiles: achievement, closure, moratorium, and diffusion. The results of the Chi-square test indicated that young adults in part-time employment were more likely to be classified under the moratorium profile than full-time workers. The results of the multivariate analysis of variance indicated that young adults with high commitment profiles (i.e., the achievement and closure profiles) had higher job satisfaction and work engagement than those with low commitment profiles (i.e., the moratorium and diffusion profiles). The physiological functions of mast cells remain largely an enigma. In the context of barrier damage, mast cells are integrated in type 2 immunity and, together with immunoglobulin E (IgE), promote allergic diseases. Allergic symptoms may, however, facilitate expulsion of allergens, toxins and parasites and trigger future antigen avoidance1–3. Here, we show that antigen-specific avoidance behaviour in inbred mice4,5 is critically dependent on mast cells; hence, we identify the immunological sensor cell linking antigen recognition to avoidance behaviour. Avoidance prevented antigen-driven adaptive, innate and mucosal immune activation and inflammation in the stomach and small intestine. Avoidance was IgE dependent, promoted by Th2 cytokines in the immunization phase and by IgE in the execution phase. Mucosal mast cells lining the stomach and small intestine rapidly sensed antigen ingestion. We interrogated potential signalling routes between mast cells and the brain using mutant mice, pharmacological inhibition, neural activity recordings and vagotomy. Inhibition of leukotriene synthesis impaired avoidance, but overall no single pathway interruption completely abrogated avoidance, indicating complex regulation. Collectively, the stage for antigen avoidance is set when adaptive immunity equips mast cells with IgE as a telltale of past immune responses. On subsequent antigen ingestion, mast cells signal termination of antigen intake. Prevention of immunopathology-causing, continuous and futile responses against per se innocuous antigens or of repeated ingestion of toxins through mast-cell-mediated antigen-avoidance behaviour may be an important arm of immunity.Mast cells are shown to function as sensor cells linking antigen recognition in type 2 immunity to antigen-specific avoidance behaviour, preventing immune activation and inflammation. Convective vortices (whirlwinds) and dust devils (dust‐loaded vortices) are one of the most common phenomena on Mars. They reflect the local thermodynamical structure of the atmosphere and are the driving force of the dust cycle. Additionally, they cause an elastic ground deformation, which is useful for retrieving the subsurface rigidity. Therefore, investigating convective vortices with the right instrumentation can lead to a better understanding of the Martian atmospheric structures as well as the subsurface physical properties. In this study, we quantitatively characterized the convective vortices detected by NASA's InSight (∼13,000 events) using meteorological (e.g., pressure, wind speed, temperature) and seismic data. The evaluated parameters, such as the signal‐to‐noise ratio, event duration, asymmetricity of pressure drop profiles, and cross‐correlation between seismic and pressure signals, are compiled as a catalog. Using these parameters, we investigated (a) the vortex structure and (b) the subsurface physical properties. Regarding the first topic, we tried to illustrate the vertical vortex structure and its link to the shape of the pressure profiles by combining the asymmetrical features seen in the observed pressure drops and the terrestrial observations of dust devils. Our results indicate that most of the vortices move with the wall tilted in the advection direction. Concerning the second topic, selecting the highly correlated events between pressure perturbation and ground response, we estimated the subsurface rigidity at the InSight landing site down to 100 m depth. Our results indicate that the subsurface structure can be modeled with two layers having a transition at 5–15 m depth. They reflect the local atmospheric structure and are the main driving force to lift the fine dust from the ground. In 2018, NASA's InSight succeeded in installing the meteorological and geophysical packages on Mars. That brought us, in particular, meteorological data with an extremely high temporal resolution, contributing to resolving local phenomena such as convective vortices. Awareness of the direction of the body's (longitudinal) axis is fundamental for action and perception. The perceived body axis orientation is strongly biased during body tilt; however, the neural substrates underlying this phenomenon remain largely unknown. Here, we tackled this issue using a neuropsychological approach in patients with hemispheric stroke. Thirty-seven stroke patients and 20 age-matched healthy controls adjusted a visual line with the perceived body longitudinal axis when the body was upright or laterally tilted by 10 degrees. The bias of the perceived body axis caused by body tilt, termed tilt-dependent error (TDE), was compared between the groups. The TDE was significantly smaller (i.e., less affected performance by body tilt) in the stroke group (15.9 ± 15.9°) than in the control group (25.7 ± 17.1°). Lesion subtraction analysis and Bayesian lesion-symptom inference revealed that the abnormally reduced TDEs were associated with lesions in the right occipitotemporal cortex, such as the superior and middle temporal gyri. The mechanisms underlying geocentric (orientations of an object or the body relative to 'gravity') and egocentric estimates (object orientation relative to the 'body') have each been examined; however, little is known regarding the association between these estimates, especially when the body is nearly upright. To address this, we conducted two psychophysical experiments. In Experiment 1, participants estimated the direction of a visual line (subjective visual vertical; SVV) and their own body relative to gravity (subjective body tilt; SBT) and the direction of a visual line relative to the body longitudinal axis (subjective visual body axis; SVBA) during a small-range whole-body roll tilt. We evaluated the correlations between performance on each of these tasks as covariates of actual body tilt angles. Our results showed a significant correlation of performance (estimation errors) on the SVBA task with performance on the SBT task but not performance on the SVV task at the group level after adjusting for the actual body tilt angles, suggesting a link between the estimates for SVBA and SBT tasks. To confirm this relationship, in Experiment 2, we further assessed whether manipulating the subjective direction of the body axis by providing visual feedback in the SVBA task subsequently affected SBT performance. We found that feedback in the SVBA task significantly shifted the SBT angles even when the actual body angles were identical. The observed association between SVBA and SBT performance supports at least a partially shared mechanism underlying body tilt and egocentric estimates when the body is nearly upright. Simple Summary: Epidemiological evidence supports an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) at doses and dose rates much lower than previously believed. However, the molecular mechanism involved in cardiac damage after chronic irradiation has not been fully elucidated. Here, we studied the proteome of mice hearts chronically irradiated with a very low dose (1 mGy/day) or with a low dose (20 mGy/day) for 300 days. Changes in the proteome were further validated by immunoblotting, enzyme activity assays, immunohistochemistry, and targeted transcriptomics. The data presented here demonstrate that chronic low-dose total body irradiation induces biological changes in mouse cardiac tissue that resemble the effects of premature cardiac ageing. A comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms of CVD following chronic low dose irradiation will enable the identification of target molecules or pathways which may be used in bioassays for measuring endpoints relevant to radiation risk assessment. Recent epidemiologic studies support an association between chronic low-dose radiation exposure and the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The molecular mechanisms underlying the adverse effect of chronic low dose exposure are not fully understood. To address this issue, we have investigated changes in the heart proteome of ApoE deficient (ApoE−/−) C57Bl/6 female mice chronically irradiated for 300 days at a very low dose rate (1 mGy/day) or at a low dose rate (20 mGy/day), resulting in cumulative whole-body doses of 0.3 Gy or 6.0 Gy, respectively. The heart proteomes were compared to those of age-matched sham-irradiated ApoE−/− mice using label-free quantitative proteomics. Radiation-induced proteome changes were further validated using immunoblotting, enzyme activity assays, immunohistochemistry or targeted transcriptomics. The analyses showed persistent alterations in the cardiac proteome at both dose rates; however, the effect was more pronounced following higher dose rates. The altered proteins were involved in cardiac energy metabolism, ECM remodelling, oxidative stress, and ageing signalling pathways. The changes in PPARα, SIRT, AMPK, and mTOR signalling pathways were found at both dose rates and in a dose-dependent manner, whereas more changes in glycolysis and ECM remodelling were detected at the lower dose rate. These data provide strong evidence for the possible risk of cardiac injury following chronic low dose irradiation and show that several affected pathways following chronic irradiation overlap with those of ageing-associated heart pathology. Objective Various strategies are used to motivate individuals with stroke during rehabilitation. However, how physical therapists select the motivational strategies that they use for each individual is yet to be established. Therefore, this study aimed to explore how physical therapists use different motivational strategies for individuals in stroke rehabilitation programs. Methods A criterion sample of 15 physical therapists who have worked in rehabilitation for over 10 years and were interested in an individual's motivation participated in one-on-one semi-structured online interviews. The interviews explored their perspectives and experiences regarding the motivational strategies used depending on each individual's condition. The collected data were analyzed with thematic analysis. Results A total of 9 themes emerged from the data upon thematic analysis and inductive coding. Participants used different strategies to encourage individuals' active participation in physical therapy depending on (1) their mental health, (2) their physical difficulties, (3) their level of cognitive function, (4) their personality, (5) their activities and participation, (6) their age, (7) their human environment, and (8) the type of rehabilitation service where the individual underwent treatment. For example, in cases where an individual lost self-confidence, participants offered practice tasks that the individual could achieve with little effort to make them experience success. The interviews also revealed (9) motivational strategies used regardless of the individual's condition. For instance, patient-centered communication was used to build rapport with individuals, irrespective of their condition. Conclusion This qualitative study suggests that physical therapists use different strategies depending on the individual's mental health conditions, physical problems, level of cognitive function, personality, activities and participation, age, human environment, and the type of rehabilitation service where the individual undergoes treatment to motivate individuals with stroke during physical therapy. Purpose: Cerebrospinal fluid drainage (CSFD) is recommended during open or endovascular thoracic aortic repair. However, the incidence of CSFD complications is still high. Recently, CSF pressure has been kept high to avoid complications, but the efficacy of CSFD at higher pressures has not been confirmed. We hypothesize that CSFD at higher pressures is effective for preventing motor deficits. Methods: This prospective observational study included 14 hospitals that are members of the Japanese Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. Patients who underwent thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic repair were divided into four groups: Group 1, CSF pressure around 10 mmHg; Group 2, CSF pressure around 15 mmHg; Group 3, CSFD initiated when motor evoked potential amplitudes decreased; and Group 4, no CSFD. We assessed the association between the CSFD group and motor deficits using mixed-effects logistic regression with a random intercept for the institution. Results: Of 1072 patients in the study, 84 patients (open surgery, 51; thoracic endovascular aortic repair, 33) had motor deficits at discharge. Groups 1 and 2 were not associated with motor deficits (Group 1, odds ratio (OR): 1.53, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.71–3.29, p = 0.276; Group 2, OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 0.62–4.82) when compared with Group 4. Group 3 was significantly more prone to motor deficits than Group 4 (OR: 2.56, 95% CI: 1.27–5.17, p = 0.009). Contour maps were constructed, which included baseline-data variability, change in level or slope, and percentage of non-overlapping data between the state and forecast values by the local linear trend model. Simulation results showed that baseline-data variability and changes in level and slope after intervention affect the data-comparison accuracy based on the local linear trend model. The field study investigated the intervention effects for actual field data using the local linear trend model, which confirmed 100% effectiveness of previous N-of-1 studies. These results imply that baseline-data variability affects the data-comparison accuracy using a local linear trend model, which could accurately predict the intervention effects. The Hayabusa2 mission provided a unique data set of asteroid Ryugu that covers a wide range of spatial scale from the orbiter remote sensing instruments to the returned samples. The MASCOT lander that was delivered onto the surface of Ryugu aimed to provide context for these data sets by producing in situ data collected by a camera (MasCam), a radiometer (MARA), a magnetometer (MasMag) and a spectrometer (MicrOmega). In this work, we evaluate the success of MASCOT as an integrated lander to bridge the gap between orbiter and returned sample analysis. We find that MASCOT's measurements and derivatives thereof, including the rock morphology, colour in the visible wavelengths, possible meteorite analogue, density, and porosity of the rock at the landing site are in good agreement with those of the orbiter and the returned samples. However, it also provides information on the spatial scale (sub-millimetres to centimetres) at which some physical properties such as the thermal inertia and reflectance undergo scale-dependent changes. Some of the in situ observations such as the presence of clast/inclusions in rocks and the absence of fine particles at the landing site was uniquely identified by MASCOT. Thus, we conclude that the delivery of an in situ instrument like MASCOT provides a valuable data set that complements and provides context for remote sensing and returned sample analyses. Aim: To determine the impact of direct‐acting antiviral therapy on the long‐term prognosis of decompensated cirrhotic patients. Methods: A total of 37 patients with hepatitis C virus‐induced decompensated cirrhosis treated with sofosbuvir and velpatasvir (SOF/VEL group) were prospectively enrolled. For historical control, 65 hepatitis C virus‐positive decompensated cirrhotic patients who did not receive direct‐acting antiviral therapy were included (control group). The incidence rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), decompensated events with hospitalization, and overall survival were compared between both groups. Results: A total of 41 patients experienced decompensated events during 15.0 months in the control group, and six patients during 21.6 months in the SOF/VEL group. The cumulative incidence rates of decompensated events after 2 years were significantly higher in the control group (53.1%) than in the SOF/VEL group (14.5%; p < 0.001). A total of 27 patients died within 22.0 months in the control group, and three patients died within 25.6 months in the SOF/VEL group. The overall survival rates after 2 years were significantly lower in the control group (67.6%) than in the SOF/VEL group (91.3%; p = 0.010). A total of 13 patients in the control group developed HCC during 15.8 months, and 10 patients during 17.3 months in the SOF/VEL group. The HCC incidence rates after 2 years were 20.3% and 29.6% in the control and SOF/VEL groups, respectively, with no significant difference (p = 0.327). Conclusions: SOF/VEL therapy may suppress the development of decompensated events and improve the prognosis in decompensated cirrhotic patients; however, the incidence of HCC remains prevalent in these patients irrespective of SOF/VEL therapy. The thermophysical properties of small Solar System bodies are essential to be determined, on which the thermal evolution of small bodies largely depends. The carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu is one of the small undifferentiated bodies formed in the early Solar System. Hayabusa2 explored the asteroid Ryugu and returned the surface samples in 2020 for detailed on-ground investigation, including measurements of thermal properties. Because the available sample amount was limited, this study developed a novel method to measure the thermal diffusivity of small and irregularly shaped samples of about 1 mm in diameter by combining lock-in thermography and periodic heating methods on the microscale. This method enables us to measure the thermal diffusivity of both flat-plate and granular shape samples by selecting the suitable detecting direction of the temperature response. Especially, when the sample has a flat-plate shape, the anisotropic distribution of the in-plane thermal diffusivity can be evaluated. This method was applied to six Ryugu samples, and the detailed anisotropic distribution of the thermal diffusivity was obtained. The measurement results showed that the samples show local thermal anisotropy caused by cracks and voids. The average thermal diffusivity among all samples was (2.8 to 5.8) × 10−7 m2·s. Based on the density and specific heat of the samples obtained independently, the thermal effusivity was estimated to be 791 J·(s1/2·m2·K) to 1253 J·(s1/2·m2·K), which is defined as the resistance of surface temperature to the change of thermal input. The determined thermal effusivity, often called thermal inertia in planetary science, is larger than the observed value of 225 ± 45 J· (s1/2·m2·K) of the asteroid Ryugu's surface, obtained from the diurnal temperature change of the rotating asteroid by a thermal infrared camera onboard Hayabuas2. This difference is likely to be attributed to the difference in the analytical scale between the sample and the surface boulders compared with the thermal diffusion length. The extrastriate body area (EBA) is a region in the lateral occipito-temporal cortex (LOTC), which is sensitive to perceived body parts. Neuroimaging studies suggested that EBA is related to body and tool processing, regardless of the sensory modalities. However, how essential this region is for visual tool processing and nonvisual object processing remains a matter of controversy. In this preregistered fMRI-guided repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) study, we examined the causal involvement of EBA in multisensory body and tool recognition. Participants used either vision or haptics to identify 3 object categories: hands, teapots (tools), and cars (control objects). Continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) was applied over left EBA, right EBA, or vertex (control site). Performance for visually perceived hands and teapots (relative to cars) was more strongly disrupted by cTBS over left EBA than over the vertex, whereas no such object-specific effect was observed in haptics. The simulation of the induced electric fields confirmed that the cTBS affected regions including EBA. These results indicate that the LOTC is functionally relevant for visual hand and tool processing, whereas the rTMS over EBA may differently affect object recognition between the 2 sensory modalities. All life on Earth contains amino acids and carbonaceous chondrite meteorites have been suggested as their source at the origin of life on Earth. While many meteoritic amino acids are considered indigenous, deciphering the extent of terrestrial contamination remains an issue. The Ryugu asteroid fragments (JAXA Hayabusa2 mission), represent the most uncontaminated primitive extraterrestrial material available. Here, the concentrations of amino acids from two particles from different touchdown sites (TD1 and TD2) are reported. The concentrations show that N,N-dimethylglycine (DMG) is the most abundant amino acid in the TD1 particle, but below detection limit in the other. The TD1 particle mineral components indicate it experienced more aqueous alteration. Furthermore, the relationships between the amino acids and the geochemistry suggest that DMG formed on the Ryugu progenitor body during aqueous alteration. The findings highlight the importance of aqueous chemistry for defining the ultimate concentrations of amino acids in primitive extraterrestrial samples. Amino acid concentrations from 2 particles returned from different touchdown sites on the surface of Ryugu are reported. While epidemiological data have greatly contributed to the estimation of the dose and dose-rate effectiveness factor (DDREF) for human populations, studies using animal models have made significant contributions to provide quantitative data with mechanistic insights. The current article aims at compiling the animal studies, specific to rodents, with reference to the dose-rate effects of cancer development. This review focuses specifically on the results that explain the biological mechanisms underlying dose-rate effects and their potential involvement in radiation-induced carcinogenic processes. Since the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) concept together with the key events holds promise for improving the estimation of radiation risk at low doses and low dose-rates, the review intends to scrutinize dose-rate dependency of the key events in animal models and to consider novel key events involved in the dose-rate effects, which enables identification of important underlying mechanisms for linking animal experimental and human epidemiological studies in a unified manner. Segmentation and visualization of three-dimensional digital cultural heritage are important analytical tools for the intuitive understanding of content. In this paper, we propose a semantic segmentation and visualization framework that automatically classifies carved items (people, buildings, plants, etc.) in cultural heritage reliefs. We also apply our method to the bas-reliefs of Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Indonesia. The difficulty in relief segmentation lies in the fact that the boundaries of each carved item are formed by indistinct soft edges, i.e., edges with low curvature. This unfavorable relief feature leads the conventional methods to fail to extract soft edges, whether they are three-dimensional methods classifying a three-dimensional scanned point cloud or two-dimensional methods classifying pixels in a drawn image. To solve this problem, we propose a deep-learning-based soft edge enhanced network to extract the semantic labels of each carved item from multichannel images that are projected from the three-dimensional point clouds of the reliefs. The soft edges in the reliefs can be clearly extracted using our novel opacity-based edge highlighting method. By mapping the extracted semantic labels into three-dimensional points of the relief data, the proposed method provides comprehensive three-dimensional semantic segmentation results of the Borobudur reliefs. Purpose: Although individual exploration activities have been shown to promote organizational change and innovation, few studies have clarified the factors that quantitatively promote such aspects. This study aims to examine how individual exploration activities are facilitated by goal orientation and individual unlearning. Design/methodology/approach: The data are analyzed from 1,474 employees in various jobs in a variety of organizations in Japan. This study uses structural equation modeling to test the research model. Findings: The results of this study indicate three findings. First, unlearning is effective in promoting individual exploration activities. Second, goal orientation has not only a direct effect on individual exploration activities but also a significant indirect effect on such activities through unlearning. Third, performance goal orientation has an inhibitory effect on individual exploration activities. Practical implications: Managers should encourage team members' exploration activities by setting learning goals for members and providing opportunities for members to unlearn the outdated knowledge or skills they are familiar with and learn new ones. Originality/value: These findings contribute to the existing literature by demonstrating that learning goal orientation and unlearning play important roles in promoting individual exploration activities. Previously, we reported that while low-dose-rate (LDR) gamma-ray exposure to 20 mGy/day for the entire gestation period (gestation days 0–18) did not result in any significant effect in B6C3F1 pups up to 10 weeks of age when compared to the non-irradiated controls, exposure to medium-dose-rates (MDR, 200 and 400 mGy/day) resulted in growth retardation and gonadal hypoplasia, in addition to delayed ossification (only at 400 mGy/day). In the present work, we investigated the late effects of continuous in utero exposure to gamma rays at LDRs (0.05, 1.0 and 20 mGy/day) and at an MDR of 400 mGy/day, on life span, causes of death, neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease incidences in B6C3F1 mice. Reproductive parameters such as litter size and weaning rates was not significantly different among the LDR groups, but was significantly decreased in the MDR group, when compared to the non-irradiated controls. Mean life spans were not significantly different among the LDR exposed groups compared to the non-irradiated controls, whereas the life spans of those exposed to the MDR were significantly shorter than the non-irradiated controls. There was no significant difference in tumor spectra between the non-irradiated and LDR nor MDR irradiated groups. In mice exposed to MDR in utero, the over-all incidence rates shifted with increased incidences in the number of neoplasms of liver (both sexes) and endocrine (adrenals, pituitary and ovaries in females) origin with corresponding decreases in the incidence of malignant lymphomas (both sexes) and lung neoplasms (males). Multiple primary neoplasms were significantly increased only in females exposed to MDR. Results show that B6C3F1 mice exposed to gamma-rays in utero at LDRs of 0.05, 1 and 20 mGy/day for the entire gestation period (18 days) does not significantly alter lifespan, cause of death, neoplasm incidence rates and tumor spectra. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) has become a worldwide outbreak, and it can cause various symptoms and complications. However, pneumothorax secondary to COVID‐19 is relatively uncommon. We herein report a 60‐year‐old man with bilateral refractory pneumothorax with severe COVID‐19. In patients with poor general health and who are difficult to undergo surgery for pneumothorax post‐COVID‐19, internal treatments such as chest drainage, bronchial occlusion, and pleurodesis are essential to relieving refractory pneumothorax. It also indicates that autologous blood patch pleurodesis is a useful method in terms of efficacy and side effects. Bilateral pneumothorax secondary to COVID‐19 is a very rare complication and can be refractory. In patients with poor general condition and who are unfit for surgery, combining internal treatments (chest drainage, pleurodesis, and bronchial occlusion) is essential for relieving refractory pneumothorax. The intense seismic scattering seen in Apollo lunar seismic data is one of the most characteristic features, making the seismic signals much different from those observed on the Earth. The scattering is considered to be attributed to subsurface heterogeneity. While the heterogeneous structure of the Moon reflects the past geological activities and evolution processes from the formation, the detailed description remains an open issue. Here, we present a new model of the subsurface heterogeneity within the upper lunar crust derived through a full 3D seismic wave propagation simulation. Our simulation successfully reproduced the Apollo seismic observations, leading to a significant update of the scattering properties of the Moon. The results showed that the scattering intensity of the Moon is about 10 times higher than that of the heterogeneous region on the Earth. The quantified scattering parameters could give us a constraint on the surface evolution process of the Moon and enable the comparative study for answering a fundamental question of why the seismological features are different on various planetary bodies. Plain Language Summary: In the past Apollo missions, several seismometers were installed on the nearside of the Moon and they brought us the first seismic records from an extraterrestrial body. The derived lunar seismic data surprised us because of their extremely long duration (1–2 hr) and spindle‐shaped form, which were barely observed on Earth. These characteristics, which are different from earthquakes, are thought to reflect the subsurface heterogeneity. However, the inhomogeneous structure within the lunar crust is poorly constrained. To improve our knowledge of wave propagation on an extraterrestrial body, this study evaluated the subsurface heterogeneity through 3D seismic wave propagation simulation. After running some simulations under various structure settings, we found that a certain set of parameters well reproduced the Apollo seismic data, resulting in a new heterogeneous structure model of the Moon. The evaluated parameters were compared with those measured on the Earth and Mars, and we found that the Moon is more heterogeneous than others by about 10 times. This kind of comparison makes it easier to interpret the observed seismic signals on each solid body. Also, it is useful to explain the differences in their surface evolution scenarios.
