Transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) is among the most common ultrafast photochemical experiments, but its interpretation remains challenging. In this work, we present an efficient and robust method for simulating TAS signals from first principles. Excited-state absorption and stimulated emission (SE) signals are computed using time-dependent complete active space configuration interaction (TD-CASCI) simulations, leveraging the robustness of time-domain simulation to minimize electronic structure failure. We demonstrate our approach by simulating the TAS signal of 1′-hydroxy-2′-acetonapthone (HAN) from ab initio multiple spawning nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. Our results are compared to gas-phase TAS data recorded from both jet-cooled (T ∼ 40 K) and hot (∼ 403 K) molecules via cavity-enhanced TAS (CE-TAS). Decomposition of the computed spectrum allows us to assign a rise in the SE signal to excited-state proton transfer and the ultimate decay of the signal to relaxation through a twisted conical intersection. The total cost of computing the observable signal (∼1700 graphics processing unit hours for ∼4 ns of electron dynamics) was markedly less than that of performing the ab initio multiple spawning calculations used to compute the underlying nonadiabatic dynamics. Indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs) have recently garnered considerable interest in the design of bioprobes due to their non-toxic nature and excellent optical properties. Several attempts for the conjunction of InP QDs with various entities such as organic dyes and dye-labeled proteins have been reported, while that with fluorescent proteins remains largely uncharted. This study reports the development of a Förster resonance energy transfer pair comprising glutathione-capped InP/GaP/ZnS QDs [InP(G)] and the fluorescent protein mCherry. Glutathione on InP(G) undergoes effective bioconjugation with mCherry consisting of a hexahistidine tag, and the nonradiative energy transfer is investigated using steady-state and time-resolved measurements. Selective one-photon excitation of InP(G) in the presence of mCherry shows a decay of the emission of the QDs and a concomitant growth of acceptor emission. Time-resolved investigations prove the nonradiative transfer of energy between InP(G) and mCherry. Furthermore, the scope of two-photon-induced energy transfer between InP(G) and mCherry is investigated by exciting the donor in the optical transparency range. The two-photon absorption is confirmed by the quadratic relationship between the emission intensity and the excitation power. In general, near-infrared excitation provides a path for effective light penetration into the tissues and reduces the photodamage of the sample. The two-photon-induced energy transfer in such assemblies could set the stage for a wide range of biological and optoelectronic applications in the foreseeable future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salicylideneaniline (SA) is an archetypal system for excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in non-planar systems. Multiple channels for relaxation involving both the keto and enol forms have been proposed after excitation to S1 with near-UV light. Here, we present transient absorption measurements of hot gas-phase SA, jet-cooled SA, and SA in Ar clusters using cavity-enhanced transient absorption spectroscopy (CE-TAS). Assignment of the spectra is aided by simulated TAS spectra, computed by applying time-dependent complete active space configuration interaction (TD-CASCI) to structures drawn from nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. We find prompt ESIPT in all conditions followed by the rapid generation of the trans keto metastable photochrome state and fluorescent keto state in parallel. Increasing the internal energy increases the photochrome yield and decreases the fluorescent yield and fluorescent state lifetime observed in TAS. In Ar clusters, internal conversion of SA is severely hindered, but the photochrome yield is unchanged. Peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) is a heterogeneous group of malignancies with poor outcome. Here, we identify a subgroup, PTCL-NOSSMARCB1-, which is characterized by the lack of the SMARCB1 protein and occurs more frequently in young patients. Human and murine PTCL-NOSSMARCB1- show similar DNA methylation profiles, with hypermethylation of T-cell-related genes and hypomethylation of genes involved in myeloid development. Single-cell analyses of human and murine tumors revealed a rich and complex network of interactions between tumor cells and an immunosuppressive and exhausted tumor microenvironment (TME). In a drug screen, we identified histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) as a class of drugs effective against PTCL-NOSSmarcb1-. In vivo treatment of mouse tumors with SAHA, a pan-HDACi, triggered remodeling of the TME, promoting replenishment of lymphoid compartments and reversal of the exhaustion phenotype. These results provide a rationale for further exploration of HDACi combination therapies targeting PTCL-NOSSMARCB1- within the TME. Purpose: To study implant lead tip heating because of the RF power deposition by developing mathematical models and comparing them with measurements acquired at 1.5 T and 3 T, especially to predict resonant length. Theory and Methods: A simple exponential model and an adapted transmission line model for the electric field transfer function were developed. A set of wavenumbers, including that calculated from insulated antenna theory (King wavenumber) and that of the embedding medium were considered. Experiments on insulated, capped wires of varying lengths were performed to determine maximum temperature rise under RF exposure. The results are compared with model predictions from analytical expressions derived under the assumption of a constant electric field, and with those numerically calculated from spatially varying, simulated electric fields from body coil transmission. Simple expressions for the resonant length bounded between one‐quarter and one‐half wavelength are developed based on the roots of transcendental equations. Results: The King wavenumber for both models more closely matched the experimental data with a maximum root mean square error of 9.81°C at 1.5 T and 5.71°C at 3 T compared to other wavenumbers with a maximum root mean square error of 27.52°C at 1.5 T and 22.01°C for 3 T. Resonant length was more accurately predicted compared to values solely based on the embedding medium. Conclusion: Analytical expressions were developed for implanted lead heating and resonant lengths under specific assumptions. The value of the wavenumber has a strong effect on the model predictions. This paper proposes and describes a context- and subject-specific professional digital competence (PDC) framework for beginning English language teachers in Hong Kong. Taking a localised approach, the framework was developed through a four-stage data collection process, (1) Literature review of empirical studies conducted in Hong Kong of English language teachers' technology use, (2) Review of local government curriculum documents; (3) An online survey of English language teachers' technology use (n = 83); (4) follow-up individual interviews (n = 22). The study revealed that the local subject-specific PDC of teachers includes five aspects; Technological proficiency; Pedagogical compatibility; Preparing students for the digital world; Risk, well-being and ethical awareness and Professional work. Each aspect includes ability statements. The framework can be used to evaluate existing teacher education programmes, support the development of pre-service English-language teachers and facilitate self-, peer- and teacher assessment. The elements of PDC can be converted into programme- and course-level learning outcomes or incorporated into assessment rubrics. In addition, the methods used to develop the framework can be used by scholars in other contexts and subject areas to develop localised subject-specific PDC frameworks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hand is a versatile structure that performs numerous tasks, ranging from exertion of great force such as grip, pinch and torque to execution of precise fine motor skills. The aim of current study was to undertake a preliminary study on hand dimensions as potential predictors of female populations native to the forest and savanna zones of Ghana. A total of one hundred (100) female students aged between 17 and 24 years were recruited into this study, comprising of 53 native to the forest zone and 47 native to savanna zone of Ghana between 12th June to 27th July, 2023 at the Department of Anatomy, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Statistically significant positive correlation was observed between left hand length and right hand length (R = 0.923, p = 0.000). From the binary regression model, it could be speculated that left-hand breadth could predict female populations native to the savanna zone (LHB: β = − 2.37, Expβ = 0.09, p = 0.014). However, right-hand breadth and length and left hand length did not show any potential of prediction (RHB: β = 0.900, Expβ = 2.460, p = 0.410; RHL: β = 0.168, Expβ = 1.683, p = 0.803; LHL: β = − 0.300, Expβ = 0.741, p = 0.656). The study therefore may speculate that left handbreadth could have the potential to differentiate female populations native to savanna zone from females native to forest zone in Ghana. We discuss the electrical properties of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown, modulation doped, Ge1− x Sn x quantum well devices. A consequence of the epitaxial growth process is that electronic disorder is introduced even in modulation doped quantum well structures and electrical transport properties that are characteristic of a high level of disorder are apparent. MBE growth of this material also results in the surface segregation of elemental β -Sn in the way that has been observed utilizing other epitaxial growth methods. A thermally activated, p-type mobility is a clear feature of the electrical properties with generally temperature independent hole densities ∼1012 cm−2 from the measured Hall effect and coming from the modulation doping. We present a discussion of Hall effect measurements in this disordered regime. The percolation carrier density in MBE modulation doped GeSn is in the region of ∼1 × 1012 cm−2 although Hall measurements in this regime are difficult to quantify when the resistivity >(h / e 2). In this notation h is Planck's constant and e is the unit of charge. Conductivities (σ) as low as ∼0.028 × (e 2/ h) × square can be measured in the four-contact ac configuration and the temperature dependence indicates a mobility edge in these p-type devices below ∼2 × 1012 cm−2. At lower temperatures (<∼1 K) the presence of a Coulomb gap can be determined using dc transport, constant voltage measurements where small ac current excitation is not available experimentally. This two-contact configuration can determine σ down to ∼10−6 × (e 2/ h), deep into the localization regime, revealing a hopping conductivity dominated system. Background: The application of Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) for dimensionality reduction and visualization has revolutionized the analysis of single-cell RNA expression and population genetics. However, its potential in single-cell DNA sequencing data analysis, particularly for visualizing gene mutation information, has not been fully explored. Results: We introduce Mugen-UMAP, a novel Python-based program that extends UMAP's utility to single-cell DNA sequencing data. This innovative tool provides a comprehensive pipeline for processing gene annotation files of single-cell somatic single-nucleotide variants and metadata to the visualization of UMAP projections for identifying clusters, along with various statistical analyses. Employing Mugen-UMAP, we analyzed whole-exome sequencing data from 365 single-cell samples across 12 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, revealing distinct clusters associated with histological subtypes of NSCLC. Moreover, to demonstrate the general utility of Mugen-UMAP, we applied the program to 9 additional single-cell WES datasets from various cancer types, uncovering interesting patterns of cell clusters that warrant further investigation. In summary, Mugen-UMAP provides a quick and effective visualization method to uncover cell cluster patterns based on the gene mutation information from single-cell DNA sequencing data. Conclusions: The application of Mugen-UMAP demonstrates its capacity to provide valuable insights into the visualization and interpretation of single-cell DNA sequencing data. Background: Exosomes are closely associated with different aspects of tumor-progression in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), such as angiogenesis or immune regulation. As extracellular vesicles they are involved in the intercellular communication by transferring their cargo such as proteins and nucleic acids from one cell to another. However, the influence of tumor related plasma-derived exosomes on the polarization and characteristics of monocyte derived macrophages is not fully understood. Methods: Exosomes were isolated from plasma samples of healthy donors (HD) and HNSCC patients and further evaluated with regard to morphology, size and protein composition via transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking, western blot analysis and cytokine assays. Differentiation and characteristics of monocyte derived macrophages upon exosome internalization were analyzed using flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. Macrophage cytokine secretion patterns were analyzed by human cytokine antibody arrays and ELISA measurements. Results: Our data revealed elevated overall plasma levels of CTLA-4, PD-L1, and TIM-3 as well as elevated exosome-associated CTLA-4, PD-L2, TIM-3, and LAG-3 levels in HNSCC patients compared to HD. Furthermore, we observed a significant type 2-like polarization and elevated CXCL4 secretion of monocyte derived macrophages upon internalization of plasma-derived exosomes from HNSCC patients, which could be visualized by fluorescence microcopy of membrane stained exosomes. Conclusions: The study provides new insights regarding exosome driven pro-tumorigenic immune regulation in the circulation of patients with head and neck cancer and could help to better understand the individual immunologic situation. Background: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic disorder leading to frequent bleeding in several organs. As HHT diagnosis is demanding and depends on clinical criteria, liquid biopsy would be beneficial. Exosomes from biofluids are nano-sized vesicles for intercellular communication. Their cargo and characteristics represent biomarkers for many diseases. Here, exosomes of HHT patients were examined regarding their biosignature. Methods: Exosomes were isolated from the plasma of 20 HHT patients and 17 healthy donors (HDs). The total exosomal protein was quantified, and specific proteins were analyzed using Western blot and antibody arrays. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) co-incubated with exosomes were functionally examined via immunofluorescence, proliferation, and scratch assay. Results: The levels of the angiogenesis-regulating protein Thrombospondin-1 were significantly higher in HHT compared to HD exosomes. Among HHT, but not HD exosomes, a negative correlation between total exosomal protein and soluble Endoglin (sENG) levels was found. Other exosomal proteins (ALK1, ALK5) and the particle concentration significantly correlated with disease severity parameters (total consultations/interventions, epistaxis severity score) in HHT patients. Functionally, HUVECs were able to internalize both HD and HHT exosomes, inducing a similar change in the F-Actin structure and a reduction in migration and proliferation. Conclusions: This study provided first insights into the protein cargo and function of HHT-derived exosomes. The data indicate changes in sENG secretion via exosomes and reveal exosomal Thrombospondin-1 as a potential biomarker for HHT. In the realm of solar energy utilization, there is a growing focus on designing and implementing effective photocatalytic systems, for the conversion of solar energy into valuable chemical fuels. The potential of Covalent Organic Polymers (COPs) as photocatalysts for visible‐light‐driven organic transformation has been widely investigated, positioning them as promising candidates in this field. In the design of COPs, introducing a donor‐acceptor arrangement facilitates the transfer of electrons from the donor to the acceptor, creating a charge transfer complex and leading to enhanced conductivity and improved charge separation. Here we present a novel hydrazone‐linked covalent organic polymer ETBC‐PyHz containing TPE donor and pyridine acceptor. Utilizing this, an efficient method has been developed for an oxidative cross‐coupling reaction involving C−S bond formation. This process involves arylhydrazines and arenethiols, and results in the production of unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides via the formation of aryl and thioarene radicals. Naturally occurring diabetes mellitus (NODM) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in dogs and its etiology closely resembles type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in people. Human patients with T1DM commonly have cellular derangements consistent with inflammation, impaired immune function, and hypovitaminosis D. There is little information available regarding inflammatory biomarkers, immune function, and vitamin D status in diabetic dogs. Therefore, our objectives were to assess inflammatory biomarkers, vitamin D metabolites, and phagocytic capacity in diabetic dogs and determine whether associations exist with these variables and the level of clinical control or vitamin D metabolites. This was a prospective case--control study that included 20 otherwise healthy diabetic dogs (clinically controlled, n = 10; uncontrolled, n = 10) and 20 nondiabetic, healthy, age (± 2 years), breed, and sex matched controls. Complete blood count, biochemical panel, urinalysis, and fructosamine were performed at a single commercial reference laboratory. Basal plasma tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IL-10 were measured using a canine-specific multiplex bead-based assay. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured using a commercially available ELISA kit. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (OH)D3 and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin (OH)2D3 were measured with HPLC. Phagocytosis of opsonized-Escherichia coli (E. coli) was evaluated with flow cytometry. Diabetic dogs had higher serum CRP concentrations than controls (p = 0.02). Plasma IL-8 concentrations were higher in diabetic dogs with uncontrolled clinical disease compared to controls (p = 0.02). Diabetic dogs had a lower percentage of leukocytes that phagocytized opsonized-E. coli (p = 0.02), but an increased number of bacteria phagocytized per cell (p < 0.001) compared to controls. No between-group differences were identified in vitamin D metabolites, nor were associations found between vitamin D and any variables. Fructosamine had a positive association with serum CRP concentration (rho = 0.35, p = 0.03) and number of bacteria phagocytized per cell (rho = 0.45, p = 0.004) in our cohort (n = 40). Like people with T1DM, diabetic dogs have a proinflammatory phenotype and phagocytic dysregulation that may be correlated with glycemic control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reliability of plasma biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be compromised by protease‐induced degradation. This can limit the feasibility of conducting plasma biomarker studies in environments that lack the capacity for immediate processing and appropriate storage of blood samples. We hypothesized that blood collection tube supplementation with protease inhibitors can improve the stability of plasma biomarkers at room temperatures (RT). In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of blood biomarker stability in traditional ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tubes versus BD™ P100 collection tubes, the latter being coated with a protease inhibitor cocktail. The stability of six plasma AD biomarkers was evaluated over time under RT conditions. We evaluated three experimental approaches. In Approach 1, pooled plasma samples underwent storage at RT for up to 96 h. In Approach 2, plasma samples isolated upfront from whole blood collected into EDTA or P100 tubes were stored at RT for 0 h or 24 h before biomarker measurements. In Approach 3, whole blood samples were collected into paired EDTA and P100 tubes, followed by storage at RT for 0 h or 24 h before isolating the plasma for analyses. Biomarkers were measured with Single Molecule Array (Simoa) and immunoprecipitation‐mass spectrometry (IP‐MS) assays. Both the IP‐MS and Simoa methods revealed that the use of P100 tubes significantly improves the stability of Aβ42 and Aβ40 across all approaches. However, the Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio levels were significantly stabilized only in the IP‐MS assay in Approach 3. No significant differences were observed in the levels of plasma p‐tau181, GFAP, and NfL for samples collected using either tube type in any of the approaches. Supplementation of blood collection tubes with protease inhibitors could reduce the protease‐induced degradation of plasma Aβ42 and Aβ40, and the Aβ42/40 ratio for the IP‐MS assay. Purpose: MRI using 3D stack‐of‐spirals (SoS) readout on a high‐performance gradient system is subject to strong second‐order, spatially varying concomitant fields, which can lead to signal dropout and blurring artifacts that become more significant at locations farther from the gradient isocenter. A method for compensating for second‐order concomitant fields in 3D axial SoS image reconstruction is described. Methods: We retrospectively correct for second‐order concomitant field–induced phase error in the 3D SoS data by slice‐dependent k‐space phase compensation based on the nominal spiral readout trajectories. The effectiveness of the method was demonstrated in phantom and healthy volunteer scans in which 3D pseudo‐continuous arterial spin labeling imaging was performed with SoS fast spin‐echo readout at 3 T. Results: Substantial reduction in blurring was observed with the proposed method. In phantom scans, blurring was reduced by about 53% at 98 mm from the gradient isocenter. In the in vivo 3D pseudo‐continuous arterial spin labeling scans, differences of up to 10% were observed at 78 mm from the isocenter, especially around the white‐matter and gray‐matter interfaces, between the corrected and uncorrected proton density images, perfusion‐weighted images, and cerebral blood flow maps. Conclusions: The described retrospective correction method provides a means to correct erroneous phase accruals due to second‐order concomitant fields in 3D axial stack‐of‐spirals imaging. Profile mixture models capture distinct biochemical constraints on the amino acid substitution process at different sites in proteins. These models feature a mixture of time-reversible models with a common matrix of exchangeabilities and distinct sets of equilibrium amino acid frequencies known as profiles. Combining the exchangeability matrix with each profile generates the matrix of instantaneous rates of amino acid exchange for that profile. Currently, empirically estimated exchangeability matrices (e.g. the LG matrix) are widely used for phylogenetic inference under profile mixture models. However, these were estimated using a single profile and are unlikely optimal for profile mixture models. Here, we describe the GTRpmix model that allows maximum likelihood estimation of a common exchangeability matrix under any profile mixture model. We show that exchangeability matrices estimated under profile mixture models differ from the LG matrix, dramatically improving model fit and topological estimation accuracy for empirical test cases. Because the GTRpmix model is computationally expensive, we provide two exchangeability matrices estimated from large concatenated phylogenomic-supermatrices to be used for phylogenetic analyses. One, called Eukaryotic Linked Mixture (ELM), is designed for phylogenetic analysis of proteins encoded by nuclear genomes of eukaryotes, and the other, Eukaryotic and Archaeal Linked mixture (EAL), for reconstructing relationships between eukaryotes and Archaea. These matrices, combined with profile mixture models, fit data better and have improved topology estimation relative to the LG matrix combined with the same mixture models. Purpose: Common respiratory infections were significantly reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic due to general protective and hygiene measures. The gradual withdrawal of these non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) was associated with a notable increase in these infections, particularly in pediatric and adult otorhinolaryngology. The aim of this retrospective monocentric study was to evaluate the impact of NPI during the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence and severity of acute mastoiditis (AM). Methods: Pre-pandemic clinical data of AM cases from 2011 to 2019 were compared with infection counts from January 2020 to June 2023 for seasonal periodicity, age-specific differences, pathogens, and complication rates in a German third-level hospital. Results: Out of 196 patients with AM 133 were children, the majority between 1 and 5 years of age. Complications of AM, such as meningitis, brain abscess, and sinus vein thrombosis, were more common in adults (87%) than in children (17%). Morbidity and mortality rates were similar before, during and after the pandemic. Pneumococci were the most common pathogen in both age groups, with a post-pandemic cumulation of Streptococcus pyogenes infections in children. While pre-pandemic cases clustered in spring, seasonality was absent in all age groups during the main phase of the pandemic. The cessation of NPI caused a steep rise in AM cases in both age groups starting from December 2022. Conclusion: NPI during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the incidence of AM. Their reversal led to a substantial increase in the incidence of AM during the post-pandemic period, which may be due to a general increase in viral respiratory infections and an insufficiently trained immune system. Background: Amidst the expansion of student enrollment in higher education, the well-being and retention rates of students have emerged as important concerns. Resilience, especially academic resilience, a multidimensional construct that can lead to academic success in adversity, is pivotal in enabling students to successfully cope with academic challenges. While the Academic Resilience Scale-30 (ARS-30) has been validated as an effective instrument in various languages, its applicability for Chinese students in higher education remains unexplored. Objective: This study aims to translate and validate the ARS-30 in Chinese, assessing its reliability and validity among Chinese college students in higher education. Methods: A convenience sample of 1,542 students participated in this study. The inventory included the demographic form, Chinese version of ARS-30 (C-ARS-30), 10-item Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), and General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). The assessment of validity was conducted by analyzing content validity, construct validity, convergent and discriminant validity, as well as criterion-related validity. Construct validity was evaluated through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM). Reliability analysis was performed using Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability. Results: The C-ARS-30 demonstrated commendable content validity, with the CVI value of items ranging from 0.833 to 1.000, and a total scale CVI of 0.986. ESEM analysis revealed a solid four-factor structure, maintaining the scale's 30 items with excellent fit indices (χ2/df = 2.647, CFI = 0.937, TLI = 0.915, RMSEA = 0.057, SRMR = 0.027). The total score of C-ARS-30 exhibited positive correlations with the CD-RISC-10 (r = 0.542) and the GSES (r = 0.488). The scale demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's a = 0.930) and test-retest reliability (0.794, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The C-ARS-30 is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing academic resilience among Chinese college students, offering a valuable tool for educational and psychological evaluations. Introduction: The human leukocyte antigen complex (HLA) is essential for inducing specific immune responses to cancer by presenting tumor-associated peptides (TAP) to T cells. Overexpressed tumor associated antigens, mainly cancer-testis antigens (CTA), are outlined as essential targets for immunotherapy in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). This study assessed the degree to which presentation, gene expression, and antibody response (AR) of TAP, mainly CTA, are correlated in OPSCC patients to evaluate their potential as immunotherapy targets. Materials and methods: Snap-frozen tumor (NLigand/RNA=40), healthy mucosa (NRNA=6), and healthy tonsils (NLigand=5) samples were obtained. RNA-Seq was performed using Illumina HiSeq 2500/NovaSeq 6000 and whole exome sequencing (WES) utilizing NextSeq500. HLA ligands were isolated from tumor tissue using immunoaffinity purification, UHPLC, and analyzed by tandem MS. Antibodies were measured in serum (NAb=27) utilizing the KREX™ CT262 protein array. Data analysis focused on 312 proteins (KREX™ CT262 panel + overexpressed self-proteins). Results: 183 and 94 of HLA class I and II TAP were identified by comparative profiling with healthy tonsils. Genes from 26 TAP were overexpressed in tumors compared to healthy mucosa (LFC>1; FDR<0.05). Low concordance (r=0.25; p<0.0001) was found between upregulated mRNA and class I TAP. The specific mode of correlation of TAP was found to be dependent on clinical parameters. A lack of correlation was observed both between mRNA and class II TAP, as well as between class II tumor-unique TAP (TAP-U) presentation and antibody response (AR) levels. Discussion: This study demonstrates that focusing exclusively on gene transcript levels fails to capture the full extent of TAP presentation in OPSCC. Biomass burning plays an important role in climate-forcing and atmospheric chemistry. The drivers of fire activity over the past two centuries, however, are hotly debated and fueled by poor constraints on the magnitude and trends of preindustrial fire regimes. As a powerful tracer of biomass burning, reconstructions of paleoatmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) can provide valuable information on the evolution of fire activity across the preindustrial to industrial transition. Here too, however, significant disagreements between existing CO records currently allow for opposing fire histories. In this study, we reconstruct a continuous record of Antarctic ice coreCObetween 1821 and 1995CE to overlap with direct atmospheric observations. Our record indicates that the Southern Hemisphere CO burden ([CO]) increased by 50% from a preindustrial mixing ratio of ca. 35 ppb to ca. 53 ppb by 1995 CE with more variability than allowed for by state-of-the-art chemistry-climate models, suggesting that historic CO dynamics have been not fully accounted for. Using a 6-troposphere box model, a 40 to 50% decrease in Southern Hemisphere biomass-burning emissions, coincident with unprecedented rates of early 20th century anthropogenic land-use change, is identified as a strong candidate for this mismatch. Simple Summary: The incidence of metastatic melanoma is rising, making it imperative to identify patients who do not benefit from immunotherapy. This study aimed to develop a radiomic biomarker, using segmentations from 146 baseline and 146 first follow-up CT scans, to predict best overall response, progression-free survival, and overall survival across various immunotherapies. We volumetrically segmented the total tumour load, excluding cerebral metastases. This study also examined whether reducing the number of segmented metastases per patient affects predictive accuracy. The findings suggest that delta radiomics could enhance the prediction of best overall response, progression-free survival, and overall survival in metastatic melanoma patients undergoing first-line immunotherapy. Although volumetric whole tumour load segmentation is complex, it may provide predictive benefits. Methods: The total tumour load, excluding cerebral metastases, from 146 baseline and 146 first follow-up CTs of melanoma patients treated with first-line immunotherapy was volumetrically segmented. Twenty-one random forest models were trained and compared for the endpoints BOR; PFS at 6, 9, and 12 months; and OS at 6, 9, and 12 months, using as input either only clinical parameters, whole-tumour-load delta radiomics plus clinical parameters, or delta radiomics from the largest ten metastases plus clinical parameters. Results: The whole-tumour-load delta radiomics model performed best for BOR (AUC 0.81); PFS at 6, 9, and 12 months (AUC 0.82, 0.80, and 0.77); and OS at 6 months (AUC 0.74). The model using delta radiomics from the largest ten metastases performed best for OS at 9 and 12 months (AUC 0.71 and 0.75). Although the radiomic models were numerically superior to the clinical model, statistical significance was not reached. Conclusions: The findings indicate that delta radiomics may offer additional value for predicting BOR, PFS, and OS in metastatic melanoma patients undergoing first-line immunotherapy. A brain–computer interface (BCI) bridges brain and computer activities through the computer engineering technique of capturing and analysing a person's biological and neurological response signals. This article reviews 37 empirical studies published in the past five years regarding the application of BCIs in mainstream education contexts for students' learning regulation. The characteristics of the research methodology, technologies, targeted application scenarios and main outcomes of the reviewed studies are presented in detail and summarised. The results show that most of the research in this area has concentrated on the effects of neurofeedback on the learning regulation process, optimising data-processing algorithms, developing criteria, and designing BCI-based instructional environments. Neurofeedback- and biofeedback-based BCI approaches can help to monitor learning states and have positive effects on learning regulation. The paper also discusses the future development of BCIs as an effective technique for learning analysis and regulation, and it proposes a prototype of neurofeedback- and biofeedback-based BCI learning regulation systems and their application scenarios. By highlighting the current applications and possible future trends of the use of BCIs in mainstream education and identifying the challenges involved, this review can guide the development of smart education in the age of artificial intelligence. Background: Nearly 2.9 million older Americans with lower incomes live in subsidized housing. While regional and single‐site studies show that this group has higher rates of healthcare utilization compared to older adults in the general community, little is known about healthcare utilization nationally nor associated risk factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 enrolled in the National Health and Aging Trends Study in 2011, linked to Medicare claims data, including individuals living in subsidized housing and the general community. Participants were followed annually through 2020. Outcomes were hospitalization, short‐term skilled nursing facility (SNF) utilization, long‐term care utilization, and death. Fine–Gray competing risks regression analysis was used to assess the association of subsidized housing residence with hospitalization and nursing facility utilization, and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to assess the association with death. Results: Among 6294 participants (3600 women, 2694 men; mean age, 75.5 years [SD, 7.0]), 295 lived in subsidized housing at baseline and 5999 in the general community. Compared to older adults in the general community, those in subsidized housing had a higher adjusted subdistribution hazard ratio [sHR] of hospitalization (sHR 1.21; 95% CI, 1.03–1.43), short‐term SNF utilization (sHR 1.49; 95% CI, 1.15–1.92), and long‐term care utilization (sHR 2.72; 95% CI, 1.67–4.43), but similar hazard of death (HR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.69–1.08). Individuals with functional impairment had a higher adjusted subdistribution hazard of hospitalization and short‐term SNF utilization and individuals with dementia and functional impairment had a higher hazard of long‐term care utilization. Conclusions: Older adults living in subsidized housing have higher hazards of hospitalization and nursing facility utilization compared to those in the general community. Housing‐based interventions to optimize aging in place and mitigate risk of nursing facility utilization should consider risk factors including functional impairment and dementia. Methane capture via oxidation is considered one of the 'Holy Grails' of catalysis (Tucci and Rosenzweig, 2024). Methane is also a primary greenhouse gas that has to be reduced by 1.2 billion metric tonnes in 10 years to decrease global warming by only 0.23°C (He and Lidstrom, 2024); hence, new technologies are needed to reduce atmospheric methane levels. In Nature, methane is captured aerobically by methanotrophs and anaerobically by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea; however, the anaerobic process dominates. Here, we describe the history and potential of using the two remarkable enzymes that have been cloned with activity for capturing methane: aerobic capture via soluble methane monooxygenase and anaerobic capture via methyl‐coenzyme M reductase. Arguably, the greatest threat to bacteria is phages. It is often assumed that those bacteria that escape phage infection have mutated or utilized phage‐defence systems; however, another possibility is that a subpopulation forms the dormant persister state in a manner similar to that demonstrated for bacterial cells undergoing nutritive, oxidative, and antibiotic stress. Persister cells do not undergo mutation and survive lethal conditions by ceasing growth transiently. Slower growth and dormancy play a key physiological role as they allow host phage defence systems more time to clear the phage infection. Here, we investigated how bacteria survive lytic phage infection by isolating surviving cells from the plaques of T2, T4, and lambda (cI mutant) virulent phages and sequencing their genomes. We found that bacteria in plaques can escape phage attack both by mutation (i.e. become resistant) and without mutation (i.e. become persistent). Specifically, whereas T4‐resistant and lambda‐resistant bacteria with over a 100,000‐fold less sensitivity were isolated from plaques with obvious genetic mutations (e.g. causing mucoidy), cells were also found after T2 infection that undergo no significant mutation, retain wild‐type phage sensitivity, and survive lethal doses of antibiotics. Corroborating this, adding T2 phage to persister cells resulted in 137,000‐fold more survival compared to that of addition to exponentially growing cells. Furthermore, our results seem general in that phage treatments with Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa also generated persister cells. Global fertilizer production and mismanagement significantly contribute to many harmful environmental impacts, revealing the need for a greater understanding of crop growth and nutrient uptake, which can be used to optimize fertilizer management. This study experimentally adapts first-principles microbial modeling techniques to the hydroponic cultivation of Bibb lettuce (Lactuca sativa) under nitrogen-limited conditions. Monod and Michaelis–Menten's approaches are applied to predict biomass productivity and nutrient uptake and to evaluate the feasibility of reclaimed wastewater as a nutrient source of nitrogen. Experimental and modeling results reveal significantly different kinetic saturation constants ( K s = 1.331 and K m = 17.887 mg L−1) and a corresponding cell yield strongly dependent on nutrient concentration, producing visually and compositionally distinct tissue between treatments receiving ≤ 26.2 and ≥ 41.7 m g N L−1. The resulting Monod model overestimates dry mass predictions during low nutrient conditions, and the collective results support the development of a dynamic Monod curve that is temporally dependent during the plants' lifecycle. Despite this shortcoming, these results support the feasibility of reclaiming nitrogen from wastewater in hydroponic agriculture, expecting to produce lesser biomass lettuce exhibiting healthy tissue. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of post-interventional compression therapy on clinical outcomes after endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) of incompetent saphenous veins. Methods: This prospective, controlled, multicenter study in Germany involved 493 varicose vein patients followed-up for 6 months. Results: Compression therapy significantly reduced symptoms compared to no compression (VCSS: 1.4 ± 1.6 vs 2.2 ± 2.2; p =.007). Post-interventional therapy duration of up to 14 days was found to be most effective for improving patient-reported disease severity (p <.001) and higher quality of life (p =.001). Patient compliance was high (82%), and non-compliance was linked to worse disease severity (VCSS 1.4 ± 1.5 vs 2.1 ± 2.3, p =.009). Conclusion: In conclusion, post-interventional compression therapy is beneficial by reducing symptoms and improving quality of life. Generative AI such as ChatGPT provides an instant and individualized learning environment, and may have the potential to motivate student self-regulated learning (SRL), more effectively than other non-AI technologies. However, the impact of ChatGPT on student motivation, SRL, and needs satisfaction is unclear. Motivation and the SRL process can be explained using self-determination theory (SDT) and the three phases of forethought, performance, and self-reflection, respectively. Accordingly, a Delphi design was employed in this study to determine how ChatGPT-based learning activities satisfy students' each SDT need, and foster each SRL phase from a teacher perspective. We involved 36 SDT school teachers with extensive expertise in technology enhanced learning to develop a classification tool for learning activities that affect student needs satisfaction and SRL phases using ChatGPT. We collaborated with the teachers in three rounds to investigate and identify the activities, and we revised labels, descriptions, and explanations. The major finding is that a classification tool for 20 learning activities using ChatGPT was developed. The tool suggests how ChatGPT better satisfy SDT-based needs, and fosters the three SRL phrases. This classification tool can assist researchers in replicating, implementing, and integrating successful ChatGPT in education research and development projects. The tool can inspire teachers to modify the activities using generative AI for their own teaching, and inform policymakers on how to develop guidelines for AI in education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) contributes to organizational effectiveness, but it can also create a burden for employees and their partners. In three studies, we examine how employees communicate with their partner about engaging in OCB and how this affects employees' OCB, their work–family conflict, and their partner's satisfaction. In Study 1, we use qualitative data to identify five ways employees communicate with their partner in order to engage in individual initiative OCB (e.g., staying late at work, volunteering for special assignments). In Study 2, using dual-concern theory, we hypothesize that self-concerned citizenship communication strategies will not only increase OCB, but also increase work–family conflict, and we predict that other-concerned communication strategies will reduce work–family conflict and increase partner satisfaction. Using survey data from employees and their partners, these hypotheses were partially supported. Finally, in Study 3, we use experimental vignette methodology to provide causal evidence that citizenship communication strategies influence partner satisfaction. Together, these studies increase our understanding of how employees communicate with their partner about OCB, indicate that there is no single communication strategy that has positive implications for both OCB and home life, and suggest that employees and their partners tend to think of OCB as involuntary for achieving family goals. The optical properties of non-toxic indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs) are impinged by the existence of characteristic deep trap states. Several surface engineering strategies have been adopted to improve their optical quality, which has promoted the use of InP QDs for various technological applications. An antithetical approach involves the effective utilization of the deep trap states in InP QDs to modulate back electron transfer rates. Here, we explore the influence of the core-size of InP on their In-to-P stoichiometry and charge transfer dynamics when bound to an acceptor molecule, decyl viologen (DV2+). The mechanism of interaction of InP and DV2+ based on the quenching sphere model established the presence of (i) a 1:1 complex of DV2+ bound on InP and (ii) immobile quenchers in the quenching sphere, depending on the concentration of DV2+. While the forward electron transfer rates from photoexcited InP to bound DV2+ does not substantially vary with an increase in core size, the back electron transfer rates are found to be retarded. Findings from inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal that the In to P ratio is higher for QDs with larger core size, which further brings about increased carrier trapping and a decreased rate of charge recombination. Furthermore, long-lived charge-separated states in DV2+ bound to InP, extending to hundreds of milliseconds, are obtained by varying the number of DV2+ in the quenching sphere of the QDs. Background: Hereditary angioedema with normal C1-inhibitor (HAE-nC1-INH) is a rare genetic disease. The symptoms can resemble other forms of hereditary angioedema (HAE), but the specific laboratory values are inconspicuous. The knowledge about treatment strategies in HAE-nC1-INH remains insufficient; most of the drugs are only licensed and approved for other types of HAE. Methods: An analysis of all patients with HAE-nC1-INH was carried out in a certified angioedema treatment center in southern Germany. Only patients with a confirmed HAE-nC1-INH mutation were included. The impact of disease was monitored with validated questionnaires. Results: Eighteen patients were included: two families with a factor XII mutation and seven families with a plasminogen mutation. All individuals received icatibant for on-demand therapy—efficient treatment response was reported. Three patients were severely affected, and prophylaxis was initiated with lanadelumab. According to the questionnaires, the clinical course and symptoms improved significantly under this prophylactic regime. Conclusion: This is one of the first descriptions of the clinical outcomes as a response to prophylactic treatment with lanadelumab in HAE-nC1-INH patients with a known mutation. The contours of the collective action necessary to limit climate change remain difficult to discern. In this context, societal corporatist political processes, fueled by crisis narratives, have shown some promise as political devices for mobilizing people. Corporatist processes have, historically, brought political competitors like employers and labor unions together to negotiate compacts that have advanced collective goods during times of crisis. In response to the climate crisis in the Global South, affluent donor groups, state officials, some farmers, and indigenous peoples have begun to assemble corporatist-like coalitions to pursue climate stabilization. A comparative case study of efforts to promote sustainable cattle ranching through the spread of silvopastoral landscapes in Colombia and Ecuador illustrates this political dynamic, its shortcomings, and its accomplishments. Background: Women carrying the APOE4 allele are at greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) from ages 65-75 years compared to men. To better understand the elevated risk conferred by APOE4 carrier status among midlife women, we investigated the separate and interactive associations of endogenous estrogens, plasma AD biomarkers, and APOE4 carrier status on regional brain volumes in a sample of late midlife postmenopausal women. Methods: Participants were enrolled in MsBrain, a cohort study of postmenopausal women (n = 171, mean age = 59.4 years, mean MoCA score = 26.9; race = 83.2% white, APOE4 carriers = 40). Serum estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) levels were assessed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. APOE genotype was determined using TaqMan SNP genotyping assays. Plasma AD biomarkers were measured using single molecule array technology. Cortical volume was measured and segmented by FreeSurfer software using individual T1w MPRAGE images. Multiple linear regression models were conducted to determine whether separate and interactive associations between endogenous estrogen levels, plasma AD biomarkers (Aβ42/Aβ40, Aβ42/p-tau181), and APOE4 carrier status predict regional brain volume (21 regions per hemisphere, selected a priori); and, whether significant interactive associations between estrogens and AD biomarkers on brain volume differed by APOE4 carrier status. Results: There was no main effect of APOE4 carrier status on regional brain volumes, endogenous estrogen levels, or plasma AD biomarkers. Estrogens did not associate with regional brain volumes, except for positive associations with left caudal middle frontal gyrus and fusiform volumes. The interactive association of estrogens and APOE4 carrier status on brain volume was not significant for any region. The interactive association of estrogens and plasma AD biomarkers predicted brain volume of several regions. Higher E1 and E2 were more strongly associated with greater regional brain volumes among women with a poorer AD biomarker profile (lower Aβ42/40, lower Aβ42/p-tau181 ratios). In APOE4- stratified analyses, these interactions were driven by non-APOE4 carriers. Conclusion: We demonstrate that the brain volumes of postmenopausal women with poorer AD biomarker profiles benefit most from higher endogenous estrogen levels. These findings are driven by non-APOE4 carriers, suggesting that APOE4 carriers may be insensitive to the favorable effects of estrogens on brain volume in the postmenopause. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common in older people, may occur early in the development of dementia disorders, and have been associated with faster cognitive decline. Here, our objectives were to investigate whether plasma levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL), glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), and tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 (pTau181) are associated with current NPS and predict future NPS in non-demented older people. Furthermore, we tested whether the presence of NPS combined with plasma biomarkers are useful to predict Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and cognitive decline. Methods: One hundred and fifty-one participants with normal cognition (n = 76) or mild cognitive impairment (n = 75) were examined in a longitudinal brain aging study at the Memory Centers, University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland. Plasma levels of NfL, GFAP, and pTau181 along with CSF biomarkers of AD pathology were measured at baseline. NPS were assessed through the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q), along with the cognitive and functional performance at baseline and follow-up (mean: 20 months). Different regression and ROC analyses were used to address the associations of interest. Results: None of the three plasma biomarker was associated with NPS at baseline. Higher GFAP levels were associated with the presence of NPS at follow-up (OR = 2.8, p =.002) and both, higher NfL and higher GFAP with an increase in the NPI-Q severity score over time (β = 0.25, p =.034 and β = 0.30, p =.013, respectively). Adding NPS and the plasma biomarkers to a reference model improved the prediction of future NPS (AUC 0.72 to 0.88, p =.002) and AD pathology (AUC 0.78 to 0.87, p =.010), but not of cognitive decline (AUC 0.79 to 0.85, p =.081). Conclusion: Plasma NfL and GFAP are both associated with future NPS and NPS severity change. Considering the presence of NPS along with blood-based AD-biomarkers may improve the prediction of clinical progression of NPS over time and inform clinical decision-making in non-demented older people. The use of halogen bonding interactions as an alternative to acid and metal catalysts for substrate activation has gained popularity in recent years. In this work we demonstrate a halogen bond assisted activation of chalcones under visible light irradiation for the Friedel‐Crafts reaction with indole to yield β‐indolylketones. The simple and scalable protocol uses the readily available CBr4 as halogen bond catalyst. The targets are produced in 31–94% of yield with excellent functional group tolerance. The proposed mechanism of the reaction is supported by UV‐vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopic studies. Further it is demonstrated that the β‐indolylketones can be oxidised to indole substituted α, β‐unsaturated ketones by DDQ or cyclized to thieno[2,3‐b]indoles in the presence of elemental sulfur and base. Virtual Reality (VR) stands at the forefront of transformative educational technologies in the 21st century, promising to redefine traditional learning paradigms. This research delves into the impact of VR on higher education students' Reading Comprehension (RC) skills, contrasting it with conventional paper-based reading environments. By conducting a comparative analysis of RC skills among students engaged in reading a selected narrative through VR glasses and those using a paper-based format, this study offers valuable insights into the efficacy and challenges of VR in enhancing reading comprehension. A cohort of 98 undergraduate students participated in this study, which employed a mixed-methods research approach to scrutinize the differences in RC outcomes between the experimental (VR) and control (paper-based) groups. Camera traps are a powerful tool to monitor the activity pattern of species over long time periods. Camera data can be used to analyze activity patterns of or temporal niche partitioning among species. Temporal niche partitioning plays an important role for species coexistence and is under constant evolutionary pressure from predator-prey relationships. Our study aimed to investigate temporal shifts in activity patterns of red squirrels and two mammalian predators, red fox and marten (Martes spec.). Previous studies yielded different activity patterns for these species depending on location, season, predator-prey interactions, and food- availability. We used camera traps to monitor the activity of squirrels, red fox and martens throughout a whole year in a mountainous forest in southwestern Germany. We also investigated a possible difference in activity among different color morphs as coloration in mammals is often associated with concealment, for squirrels, however, such an effect could not be demonstrated so far. We found a diurnal activity for squirrels in all seasons with a bimodal activity pattern during spring, trimodal in summer and unimodal in fall and winter. Activity patterns did not differ between black and red color morphs. The activity of the squirrels showed only low to moderate overlaps with fox and marten, but there was still slight variation among seasons. Activity overlaps were higher in spring and summer, which coincides with breeding season. Our results suggest that predators might adjust their activity during squirrel breeding season to increase the chance of preying on their offspring. Squirrels in turn could benefit by minimizing the activity overlap during wintertime when they are highly visible to predators as trees are leaf-free or even snow might enhance the contrast between them and their background. Aims High-intensity drinking (HID), extreme drinking considerably above the level of heavy episodic drinking (HED), is associated with long-term health and social consequences. There is limited understanding of HID beyond young adulthood. This study aims to identify concurrent risk factors for HID, comparing age differences among all adults. Methods Multinomial logistic and linear regression modeling was performed using a nationally-representative sample of adults (analytic n  = 7956) from the 2015 and 2020 National Alcohol Surveys. The outcomes were any HID of 8–11 drinks and 12+ drinks for men, and 8+ drinks for women, and corresponding frequencies. Concurrent risk factors included coping motive, sensation seeking, simultaneous use of alcohol and cannabis (SAC), and drinking at a bar or party. Analyses were stratified by age (18–29 vs. older) and sex. Results For younger men, sensation-seeking was significantly associated with HID (vs. no HED) at both levels and frequency of HID 8–11 drinks, while drinking to cope was only significant for 12+ drinks. For older men, drinking to cope was a consistent predictor for both HID level and its frequency, but sensation-seeking was not significant. Both coping and sensation-seeking were significantly associated with any HID for all women, while coping was significant for HID frequency for younger women. Frequent drinking at bars and parties were associated with greater odds of HID for all adults. With HED as referent, similar patterns of (though fewer significant) associations were observed. Purpose: Healthy cancer survivorship involves patients' active engagement with preventative health behaviors and follow‐up care. While clinicians and patients have typically held dual responsibility for activating these behaviors, transitioning some clinician effort to technology and health coaches may enhance guideline implementation. This paper reports on the acceptability of the Shared Healthcare Actions & Reflections Electronic systems in survivorship (SHARE‐S) program, an entirely virtual multicomponent intervention incorporating e‐referrals, remotely‐delivered health coaching, and automated text messages to enhance patient self‐management and promote healthy survivorship. Methods: SHARE‐S was evaluated in single group hybrid implementation‐effectiveness pilot study. Patients were e‐referred from the clinical team to health coaches for three health self‐management coaching calls and received text messages to enhance coaching. Semi‐structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 21 patient participants, 2 referring clinicians, and 2 health coaches to determine intervention acceptability (attitudes, appropriateness, suitability, convenience, and perceived effectiveness) and to identify important elements of the program and potential mechanisms of action to guide future implementation. Results: SHARE‐S was described as impactful and convenient. The nondirective, patient‐centered health coaching and mindfulness exercises were deemed most acceptable; text messages were less acceptable. Stakeholders suggested increased flexibility in format, frequency, timing, and length of participation, and additional tailored educational materials. Patients reported tangible health behavior changes, improved mood, and increased accountability and self‐efficacy. Conclusions: SHARE‐S is overall an acceptable and potentially effective intervention that may enhance survivors' self‐management and well‐being. Objectives: Natural language processing (NLP) represents one of the adjunct technologies within artificial intelligence and machine learning, creating structure out of unstructured data. This study aims to assess the performance of employing NLP to identify and categorize unstructured data within the emergency medicine (EM) setting. Methods: We systematically searched publications related to EM research and NLP across databases including MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, CENTRAL, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. Independent reviewers screened, reviewed, and evaluated article quality and bias. NLP usage was categorized into syndromic surveillance, radiologic interpretation, and identification of specific diseases/events/syndromes, with respective sensitivity analysis reported. Performance metrics for NLP usage were calculated and the overall area under the summary of receiver operating characteristic curve (SROC) was determined. Results: A total of 27 studies underwent meta‐analysis. Findings indicated an overall mean sensitivity (recall) of 82%–87%, specificity of 95%, with the area under the SROC at 0.96 (95% CI 0.94–0.98). Optimal performance using NLP was observed in radiologic interpretation, demonstrating an overall mean sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 96%. Conclusions: Our analysis revealed a generally favorable performance accuracy in using NLP within EM research, particularly in the realm of radiologic interpretation. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a well-recognized treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancer worldwide, but Japan has lagged behind many other countries in adopting MMS. We present a series of 5 cases of MMS utilized in Japanese patients. All cases had a favorable outcome, each benefiting from MMS with a smaller final defect or a higher likelihood of cure than standard excision. Slow adaptation of MMS in Japan likely is due to a lack of familiarity with the technique, lack of a training pipeline for physicians, barriers to payment for the procedure, and misconceptions among Japanese physicians.
