Smart textiles are currently being pursued for actuation and sensing for their potential to directly incorporate "intelligence" into the fabric, in contrast to wearable technologies. In smart textiles, smart materials (e.g., piezoelectric) are formed into yarns that are woven into fabrics for clothing. One immediate requirement for such textiles is their stability during washing cycles, as expected of any clothing items, which has been largely lacking so far. Here, we investigate the washing stability of nanofibrous piezoelectric textiles. Our results reveal that electrospun textiles exhibit remarkable structural stability from the fiber microstructure to the textile level. Overall fiber crystalline composition and electroactive β phase remain stable within 1% of ~47% and ~85%, respectively. Mechanically, the textile displays sustained performance, with only negligible changes observed. The yield strain and stress only show a ~8% and 9% differences, respectively. Moreover, piezoelectric stability is confirmed through β phase preservation and slight variation in voltage output of ~6%. These results prove the candidacy that the processing of electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibers to woven textiles is applicable to the demands of smart textiles, which is expected to accelerate the commercialization of such textiles for wearable robotics and health monitoring. Composting offers a solid waste management alternative to landfilling resulting in soil amendment products with fertilization and moisture retention benefits and collateral methane reduction by diverting organic wastes from anaerobic landfill environments. An increasing array of materials and products are marketed as compostable, though only a limited range of these are covered by certification schemes. Greater accessibility and deeper understanding of compostability testing is needed to promote meaningful evaluation of the viability and optimal conditions for composting wider ranges of materials. This article describes various critical aspects of laboratory-scale methodology that can be optimized for more consistent, accurate, and efficient testing. While most of the reviewed studies are based on standardized international test methods, modifications to vessel design, medium, control systems, and evaluation show promise. Learnings are also drawn from biodegradation tests using soil and aqueous media. Particular consideration is given to evaluating compostability of textiles, including nonwovens, which today are primarily disposed of in landfills yet have the potential to supplement organic carbon in compost mixtures with nitrogen rich food waste. Furthermore, biodegradation properties of both natural and man-made textile fibers have received growing attention in recent years. Fiber fragments found in oceans and the surge of disposable face coverings used during the COVID-19 pandemic have been widely covered in the mainstream media, highlighting the importance of understanding biodegradation properties for textiles. This review consolidates and organizes diverse and essential procedural details reported in various standards and studies with the goal of encouraging and guiding successful implementation of compostability testing more broadly in laboratories. Convolutional neural networks have been extensively studied in textile fiber recognition. However, the down-sampling performed by the convolutional and pooling layers on the extracted features result in a significant loss of fine-grained fiber features. To address this issue, a multi-head attention framework for fiber recognition has been proposed. First, textile surface images are captured using optical magnifiers and smart devices such as smartphones. Second, fiber features and label embeddings are learned separately by multi-head self-attention. Finally, the label embeddings are used to query the presence of fiber types, and pool type-related features in the multi-head cross-attention module to classify fibers. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performs exceptionally well on the textile surface image dataset, with a mean average precision accuracy improvement of 6% compared with the convolutional neural network-based fiber recognition method Cu-Net, and a 5% improvement compared with the fiber recognition method FiberCT combining convolutional neural networks and attention mechanisms. It is worth mentioning that the fiber images captured at 200× magnification in the collected dataset are most favorable for models to recognize fiber. Superbase Ionic Liquids (SBILs) are efficient direct-dissolution solvents for cellulose and have found applications such as manufacturing of man-made textile fibers. In this study cellulose beads were prepared from microcrystalline cellulose dissolved in a mixture of SBIL 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-enium acetate with dimethyl sulfoxide, [DBNH][OAc]/DMSO, by drop-wise regeneration using water as an antisolvent. This resulted in cellulose regeneration by spinodal decomposition phase separation. The cross-sections of freeze-dried beads were thoroughly investigated using SEM, revealing a complex internal bead structure. Special attention was paid to structures resulting from the inwards moving regeneration front, where the solvent and antisolvent interdiffuse in opposite directions. The phase boundary at the regeneration front showed evidence of Saffman–Taylor instability, i.e., viscous fingering. Altering the diffusion environment surrounding the bead during regeneration resulted in nested layers of cores and shells. The number and placement of the core–shell separations was regulated by the number of transfers between two antisolvent baths and the duration of alternating periods of fast and slow interdiffusion of water and [DBNH][OAc]/DMSO through the bead perimeter. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)‐based precursor fibers with different mechanical properties prepared by wet‐spinning and its correlation with microstructure was researched, the primary structural factors that affecting its properties were analyzed. The tensile strength and modulus of precursor fibers increased from 4.63 cN/dtex to 9.16 cN/dtex and 99.09 cN/dtex to 168.92 cN/dtex, respectively, with the increase in crystallinity from 69.29% to 87.84% and orientation degree increased from 83.95% to 93.81%, high performance precursor fibers could be achieved by decrease in the crystallite size and interlayer spacing, these aggregation structure plays a decisive role to the mechanical properties of fibers. The integrality of aggregation structure and properties could reflected by boiling water shrinkage behavior and glass transition temperature from the side. The fracture morphology of fibers with different properties were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and three fracture characteristics were observed, PF1 and PF3 presented the radial extended fracture without microfibril pull out, radial cluster fracture with the pull out of microfibril for PF2, PF4–PF6, together with the axial splitting pattern in PF6, which was revealed by microfibrils/fibrils in longitudinal and transverse combined with solution etching. Precursor fibers with less voids, without serious skin‐core, continuous arrangement, tightly stacked, well‐developed and complete oriented microfibrils/fibrils, exhibited excellent mechanical properties. Possible fracture process was given from the perspective of aggregation structure and microfibrils/fibrils, which become dominant factors determining properties of precursor fibers. Improve the performance could be achieved by regulating surface structure and cross‐sectional shape. The growing environmental pollution issues by synthetic textile products demand sustainable natural textile alternatives. This paper aimed at extracting and characterizing a new fiber called Ficus thonningii fiber from Ficus thonningii trees found in Ethiopia to be used as a source of textile fiber for different applications. The study utilized water and chemical extraction with sodium hydroxide methods. Physical, mechanical, and chemical properties such as length, diameter, fineness, tenacity, moisture content, moisture regain, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and ash content were characterized. The results revealed that Ficus thonningii fiber possesses comparable characteristics with jute, sisal, and flax fibers that can be used for different applications. The fiber exhibits tenacity of 39.65 cN, an elongation of 2.60%, a moisture content of 10.78%, and a moisture regain of 11.98% when extracted chemically. While it exhibits a tenacity of 37.83 cN, an elongation of 3.02%, a moisture content of 10.35%, and a moisture regain of 11.02% when extracted using water extraction method. Both extraction methods yield a fiber length of 101.50 mm. The chemical composition of the fiber obtained through water extraction consists of 52.35% cellulose, 19.20% hemicellulose, 17.20% lignin, and 1.20% ash. On the other hand, the chemical extraction method results in a composition of 63.57% cellulose, 16.10% hemicellulose, 12.10% lignin, and 0.83% ash. The current development of industrial hemp "Cannabis Sativa L." fibers for technical textiles and industrial applications requires high-quality fibers with homogeneous properties. However, several factors have been reported to influence the fibers' intrinsic properties, including a post-harvest process known as retting. This process plays a crucial role in facilitating the mechanical extraction of fibers from hemp stems. Retting involves the degradation of the amorphous components surrounding the fiber bundles enabling their decohesion from stems. Microorganisms play a central role in mediating this bioprocess. During retting, they colonize the stems' surface. Therefore, the biochemical components of plant cell wall, acting as natural binding between fibers, undergo a breakdown through the production of microbial enzymes. Although its critical role, farmers often rely on empirical retting practices, and considering various biotic and abiotic factors, resulting in fibers with heterogenous properties. These factors limit the industrial applications of hemp fibers due to their inconsistent properties. Thus, the purpose of this review is to enhance our comprehension of how retting influences the dynamics of microbial communities and, consequently, the evolution of the biochemical properties of hemp stems throughout this process. Better understanding of retting is crucial for effective process management, leading to high-value fibers. Para-aramid fibers, known for their remarkable strength and thermal stability, are frequently employed in protective textiles for military and aerospace applications. However, continuous exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage their protective characteristics. This study analyzes the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) and UV transmittance of woven fabrics produced from 30/2 Ne spun para-aramid yarns in the warp and 10 Ne core-spun yarns in the weft. The weft yarns consisted of three sheath fibers—para-aramid, meta-aramid, and polyester—in combination with different specialty core materials. The results show significant differences in UPF before and after UV exposure, with para-aramid sheaths giving the highest improvement. UV exposure caused structural changes in the fibers, resulting in increased UV protection, particularly in fabrics with para-aramid sheaths. This study concludes that the combination of para-aramid fibers with specific core materials significantly enhances UV protection, making them well-suited for applications in high UV exposure environments. Body odorants typically transfer to clothing fabrics by way of liquid sweat, yet investigations of odor retention in textiles often neglect this route of exposure in their test procedures. This paper describes a novel method for transferring selected odorous volatile organic compounds to six types of textile fibers in yarn bundle form by an aqueous sweat solution. Headspace volatile organic compounds varying by chemical class (ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids) were monitored at discrete time intervals (30 min, 3 h, 24 h) using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry. Lower intensities of ketones and aldehydes were detected in the headspace above cellulosic fibers (cotton, mercerized cotton, viscose) than above wool, nylon, and polyester fibers at 30 min. A rapid decrease in ketones occurred for all fibers, but lower intensities of ketones were released after 3 h for cellulosic and wool fibers. Nylon fibers typically released the highest amounts of ketones and aldehydes at 30 min, but by 24 h higher intensities of these compounds were released from polyester. Carboxylic acids exhibited minimal differences in intensities between 30 min and 3 h, with few differences evident among fiber types. Understanding the preferential sorption of odorants when clothing is exposed to volatile organic compounds in aqueous solutions such as sweat is enhanced from the results of this investigation. Purpose: This paper aims to study the physical and chemical characteristics of inkjet titanium dioxide inks for cotton fabric digital printing. Design/methodology/approach: Different dispersing agents through the reaction of glycerol monooleate and toluene diisocyanate were prepared and then performed by using three different polyols (succinic anhydride-modified polyethylene glycol PEG 600, EO/PO Polyether Monoamine and p-chloro aniline Polyether Monoamine), to obtain three different dispersing agents for water-based titanium dioxide inkjet inks. The prepared dispersants were characterized using FTIR to monitor the reaction progress. Then the prepared dispersants were formulated in titanium dioxide inkjet inks formulation and characterized by particle size, dynamic surface tension, transmission electron microscopy, viscosity and zeta potential against commercial dispersants. Also, the study was extended to evaluate the printed polyester by using the prepared inks according to washing and crock fastness. Findings: The obtained results showed that p-chloro aniline Polyether Monoamine (J) and succinic anhydride modified polyethylene glycol PEG 600 (H) dispersants provided optimum performance as compared to commercial standards especially, particle size distribution data while EO/PO Polyether Monoamine based on dispersant was against and then failed with the wettability and dispersion stability tests. Practical implications: These ink formulations could be used for printing on cotton fabric by DTG technique of printing and can be used for other types of fabrics. Originality/value: The newly prepared ink formulation for digital textile printing based on synthesized polyurethane prepolymers has the potential to be promising in this type of printing inks, to prevent clogging of nozzles on the printhead and to improve the print quality on the textile fiber. A finite element analysis of 3D stitched textiles in the mesoscale, under compression loading by using Catia V5R21 and Abaqus 2021 software was carried out. The model was validated by the experimental results. The interior geometry of the fabric was created using the experimental geometry measurements based on the textile fiber microscopic images. The 3D repetitive fabric unit cell was simulated using the periodic boundary conditions. The loading curves and deformation of the textile fabric were investigated based on the preform behavior under compression loading and compared with the experimental results. It was observed that increasing the compressive force increased the fiber volume fraction. The fiber volume fraction is 51.6% for the practical sample subjected to a compressive force of 5 KN and 52.6% for the modelled sample due to the application of a force of 7 KN. The simulated and experimental values of maximum stress were 2.99 and 2.5 MPa, respectively, at the strain rate of 47.5 and 47%, respectively. Featured Application: Use of ancient materials for new technologies. In recent decades, fabric-dyeing processes involved greener processes because, since ancient times, dyers used mordants based on metals to make the color better adhere to the textile fibers, but this is the reason for their increased pollution. To develop new strategies, attention was focused on finding the best condition for a dyeing method for natural fibers of vegetable and animal origin (cotton and wool) using an ancient natural dye known as folium. Folium was used mostly in miniature painting in an attempt to avoid the use of classical mordants and solvents. To this purpose, plasma treatment and chitosan coating were employed. Firstly, the textile fibers were analyzed through infrared spectroscopies to verify surface modifications; subsequently, the post-treatment morphological variations were observed via scanning electron microscopy. Both techniques highlighted a significant variation of the surface functional groups due to plasma treatments with He-O2 mixtures, which allowed a greater adhesion of chitosan on the fiber's surface. Finally, the color strength of samples dyed with folium was tested through fiber optic reflectance spectroscopy, and the folium absorbance peaks were still detected after fabric washing. Waste fiber reinforced concrete is gaining recognition as a high‐performance construction material, offering notable load‐bearing capacity, corrosion resistance, and enhanced durability features. As the building and construction industry focuses on sustainable practices, fibers derived from waste materials create an opportunity to be utilized further in composite designs. This study explores the tensile, compressive, and flexural behaviors of cardboard fibers (kraft fibers) and textile polyester fibers in concrete materials. The composite microstructure is also investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to measure the bonding performance of the fibers within the cementitious matrix. Four mix designs were created using 2.5% textile fibers as a reinforcement agent and 5% silica fume modified kraft fibers (SFKFs) as a partial cement replacement. The combination of fibers achieved 44 MPa compressive strength, equaling the control. Tensile strength was enhanced by 5% when using the combination of the two fibers, achieving 3.58 MPa in comparison to 3.41 MPa. However, flexural strength was reduced among all fibrous concrete materials. SEM images distinguished the natural and synthetic characteristics associated with the two fibers within the cementitious matrix. Namely, demonstrating the chemical bonding of SFKFs in comparison with the physical bonding properties of the textile fibers. The textile fiber market is dominated by synthetic fibers and costly natural fibers. The dual perspective with regard to finding substitutes for costly natural fibers and disadvantages due to environmental burden cum health problems by synthetic fibers need to be addressed as both entail sustainable improvement of the textile industry. The potential route for tackling such problems is utilizing unlimited plant resources in developing countries like Ethiopia. The objective of this study is to extract, characterize, and chemically treated Xanthium oriental bast fiber extracted from the plant using the conventional water retting method. In the invitation, the experimental design was based on central composite design method, and treatment parameters were selected, specifically NaOH concentration, and treatment temperature. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the significance of the results. The chemical composition analysis revealed 72% cellulose, 18% hemicellulose, and 10% lignin. Xanthium oriental fiber has a diameter of 26.85 µm, a fineness of 1.76tex, and a length of 110–145 cm with reduced values for fiber treated at different alkali concentrations. The moisture content of the extracted fiber was 12.74%. The raw fiber sample showed lower crimp (1.04%) as compared with those treated at different caustic soda concentrations. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to analyze the changes in surface, weight loss, and composition of Xanthium oriental bast fiber treated with alkali under optimum conditions compared with untreated to obtain a deeper insight into the influential mechanisms of alkali treatment. In this study antimicrobial linen-cotton jacquard textiles were manufactured using green chemistry methods. The functionalization of the fabrics was executed by impregnating chitosan microencapsulated bio-based oils from angelica (Angelica archangelica L.) (AAC) and marsh Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum Harmaja) (MLTC) obtained with pilot scale supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. The chemical compositions of the extracts of angelica and marsh Labrador tea were analyzed by a combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts, AAC and MLTC microcapsules, and the microencapsulated textiles (AAC and MLTC textiles) were analyzed against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria, dimorphic yeast Candida albicans and filamentous mold Aspergillus brasiliensis. The AAC textile proved 40% inhibition against S. aureus, whereas the MLTC textile demonstrated 43.8% and 51.7% inhibition against both S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Although the chitosan shell material itself indicated mild activity against both bacterial strains, the extracts increased the antibacterial activities in microencapsulated textiles. In addition, the antifungal impact of the MLTC textile was demonstrated against A. brasiliensis. According to the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection and field emission scanning electron microscopy analyses, covalent bonding between the microcapsules and textile fibers was established with citric acid as a cross-linker. Textile waste is becoming among the most polluting waste in the world, discarded mostly in landfills. Valorizing textile waste via anaerobic digestion (AD) helps conserve resources, reduce environmental impact, and foster a circular economy. Although several reviews have discussed textile waste AD, there is a lack of detailed understanding of the challenges encountered during textile waste AD. Therefore, the goal of this review is to focus on challenges encountered and possible solutions for those challenges for biogas and fertilizer conversion via AD. Potential strategies include chemical, biological, and thermal pretreatments that significantly increase the digestion process. Co‐digestion of natural textile waste, cotton, and wool with carbon and nitrogen‐rich substrates improves AD efficiency by twofold. Moreover, separating polyester from polycotton and textile dye removal via solvent and advanced oxidation processes significantly increases methane yield compared with untreated textile waste. This editorial draws a parallel between important papermaking innovations that were implemented by Mahatma Gandhi and some more recent ventures in papermaking in India. Both of these examples share common themes of fostering the skills of local people, using local resources, and contributing to a better future. A key insight is the scaling of the equipment to be well matched with the size of the production team and enabling a broad range of product grades. The case study considered introduces a modern twist -- using papermaking to achieve circularity in the production of textiles. The rise of "fast fashion" has driven up the production of low-cost, short-lived clothing, significantly increasing global textile fiber production and, consequently, exacerbating environmental pollution. This study investigated the ecotoxicological effects of different types of anthropogenic microfibers—cotton, polyester, and mixed fibers (50% cotton: 50% polyester)—on marine organisms, specifically sea urchin embryos. All tested fibers exhibited toxicity, with cotton fibers causing notable effects on embryonic development even at environmentally relevant concentrations. The research also simulated a scenario where microfibers were immersed in seawater for 30 days to assess changes in toxicity over time. The results showed that the toxicity of microfibers increased with both concentration and exposure duration, with polyester being the most toxic among the fibers tested. Although synthetic fibers have been the primary focus of previous research, this study highlights that natural fibers like cotton, which are often overlooked, can also be toxic due to the presence of harmful additives. These natural fibers, despite decomposing faster than synthetic ones, can persist in aquatic environments for extended periods. The findings underline the critical need for further research on both natural and synthetic microfibers to understand their environmental impact and potential threats to marine ecosystems and sea urchin populations. Cashmere is widely acclaimed as one of the most luxurious textile fibers. Mongolia, a major player in cashmere production and processing, is key to this industry. Despite the rich history of cashmere, there is limited research on cashmere fiber properties, which are essential in producing high-quality garments. This study aims to improve our understanding of cashmere fibers' physical and mechanical properties and to assess how genetic and non-genetic factors affect these characteristics. We analyzed key fiber characteristics, including scale morphology, and the physical and mechanical properties (such as fineness, length parameters, stress, and strain) in 11 samples from Mongolian goats of varying areas, breeds, ages, and genders. Through detailed statistical analysis, our experimental results revealed that both genetic and non-genetic factors significantly affect fiber fineness and the specific energy of rupture. Additionally, we observed that the influence of these factors can inform better classification systems for raw cashmere and enhance the determination of the fiber's spinability limit. Thermal management is essential for maintaining optimal performance across various applications, including personal comfort, electronic systems and industrial processes. Thermal-management fibers and textiles have emerged as innovative solutions to manipulate heat transport, storage and conversion efficiently. This review explores recent advancements in material innovations in this field. We summarize the novel fibers and textiles designed for controlling heat transport through different pathways, progress in developing phase-change-material-based fibers and textiles for heat storage regulation, and application of photothermal conversion, Joule heating and thermoelectric effect as energy conversion routes in advanced fibers and textiles. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges and future perspectives of this field. This review systematically explores the inherent structural advantages of fiber over conventional film or bulk forms for artificial muscles, emphasizing their enhanced mechanical properties and actuation, scalability, and design flexibility. Distinctive merits of electrically powered artificial muscle fiber actuation mechanisms, including electrothermal, electrochemical and dielectric actuation, are highlighted, particularly for their operational efficiency, precise control capabilities, miniaturizability and seamless integration with electronic components. A comprehensive overview of significant research driving performance enhancements in artificial muscle fibers through materials and structural innovations is provided, alongside a discussion of the diverse design methodologies that have emerged in this field. A detailed comparative assessment evaluates the performance metrics, advantages and manufacturing complexities of each actuation mechanism, underscoring their suitability for various applications. Effective integration of nanostructured photocatalysts into polymer matrices is crucial for the broad practical application of fiber-based photocatalytic composite textiles. Herein, highly durable TiO2/TPU composite fibers with high TiO2 content (>30 wt. %) were prepared through wet spinning using 1D electrospun TiO2 nanofibers (TNFs). Due to the fiber reinforcement principle, the TNF/TPU composite fibers exhibited superior mechanical properties compared with pure TPU fibers. Furthermore, the TNF/TPU composite fibers with a ratio of 1:2 process impressive degradation efficiency for rhodamine B (RhB). The orientation of 1D TNFs and stronger interface between TNF and TPU matrices not only enable the excellent load sharing and transfer effects following fiber pullout and crack bridging mechanisms, but also improve photogenerated charge transfer efficiency, resulting in high strength and high photocatalytic activity. In addition, enhanced TNF exposure on the fiber is due to the hollow and porous structures of composite fibers, which is advantageous for photocatalytic degradation. Notably, when the RhB concentration exceeded 15 ppm, the TNF/TPU composite fibers exhibited higher degradation efficiency than the TNF powder. Therefore, TNF/TPU composite fiber–based textiles with high photocatalytic activity and strength are promising for overcoming the separation and recovery issues of nanostructured catalysts in practical wastewater treatment applications. The textile industry is witnessing a paradigm shift towards sustainable materials, prompting the exploration of novel natural fibers as alternatives to synthetic fibers to meet environmental standards and address the growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products. Different natural fibers possess varied properties and are suitable for numerous applications in conventional and technical textiles. The coloration of these textile materials is an important aspect of conventional textiles, which starts with the pretreatment of the material. This study introduces a novel blend of cotton and Bauhinia vahlii fiber, a lesser-known natural cellulosic fiber with promising textile properties, and evaluates its pretreatment outcomes and dyeability characteristics. The study employs a systematic approach to pretreat the cotton and Bauhinia vahlii fiber blend (cotton: Bauhinia vahlii fiber 70:30) in a single bath using a conventional combined scouring bleaching process. The pretreatment process is carried out two times with varied sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations for different processing times at 90 °C to assess the component fibers' whiteness index, union bleaching balance, and weight loss percentage under diverse pretreatment conditions. Each time, 50% of the chemicals were used and continued for half of the processing time. The dyeability of the treated fibers is analyzed by dyeing the same in a single bath using amron bright red HF2R bifunctional reactive dye in varied shade depths (1%, 3%, and 5%) and fiber blend ratios (cotton: Bauhinia vahlii fiber 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, and 0:100) to assess the color strength, union dyeing balance, and fastness properties. The maximum whiteness was achieved with 6 g per liter (gpl) of NaOH and H2O2 and at a processing time of 150 min with a whiteness index of 80.46 and 54.34 of cotton and Bauhinia vahlii fiber, respectively, with a union bleaching balance of 1.48. The dyed fibers' colorimetric results confirm that Bauhinia vahlii fiber gives higher color strength than cotton fiber, irrespective of shade depth and blend ratio. The union dyeing balance of 1.2 was achieved at 5% shade depth with a 70:30 cotton Bauhinia vahlii fiber blend. This research contributes to the conventional textile field by introducing a sustainable fiber blend that reduces reliance on synthetic fiber and opens new avenues for utilizing Bauhinia vahlii fiber in conventional textile manufacturing. Highlights: The whiteness index of BVF increases significantly with an increase in NaOH and H2O2 concentration as well as processing time, and the maximum whiteness index is achieved with 6 gpl NaOH and H2O2 and a processing time of 150 min. The whiteness index of cotton and BVF is 80.46 and 54.34, respectively, with a union bleaching balance of 1.48 and a weighted average whiteness index of 72.62. In the case of cotton fiber, a weight loss of 5–7% is observed due to the pretreatment process, whereas a weight loss of 15–23% is observed in the case of BVF. Bauhinia vahlii fiber gives higher color strength than cotton fiber, irrespective of the shade depth as well as the blend ratio. The union dyeing balance decreases with an increase in shade depth. This study presents a novel method to fabricate scalable photovoltaic fibers (PVFs) by leveraging crystalline silicon (c‐Si) solar cell technology, known for its high‐power conversion efficiency (PCE), stable performance, and low cost. The c‐Si PVF is built on a flexible circuit strip as narrow as 400 µm, and c‐Si cells as small as 0.35 mm2 are surface‐mounted on the strip. The cells are diced from an interdigitated back‐contact c‐Si solar cell (≈153 cm2). A c‐Si PVF including a 1 mm2 cell reaches PCE up to 9.6% and 11.0% under simulated AM 1.5G illumination without and with encapsulation, respectively, the highest reported for c‐Si PVFs, while a 1.5 ft‐long fiber produces ≈37 mW m−1. Additionally, the PVF can tolerate bending fatigue with no sign of performance loss after 8000 bending cycles. To demonstrate practical applicability, the c‐Si PVFs are also woven into textile swatches. They deliver ≈10 mW cm−2 under a halogen lamp and successfully power a light‐emitting‐diode. This PVF technology is scalable with regards to both achieving thin fibers and its compatibility with roll‐to‐roll fabrication processes. Acoustic absorption consists basically of the transformation of mechanical energy into thermal energy, carried out through the interaction of the fibers with the sound wave through the breaking of such waves and their meeting with the surface of the fibers. Among the various materials that may be employed to this end, the use of non-woven fabrics has stood out. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the number of carded non-woven web layers on the mechanical and sound absorption capacity. For this purpose, three groups of non-woven fabrics were produced with different numbers of web layers (24, 40, and 58 layers) of equal thickness and density, composed of a mixture of polyester fibers. Standard test procedures were used to measure the physical properties of the non-woven fabrics, the linear density of the fibers used as raw material, the tensile strength, and air permeability and to assess the sound absorption capacity. In addition, to identify a balance point between sound absorption and equipment productivity, the relationship between the acoustic performance of the non-woven fabrics produced and their production speed was evaluated. The greater the number of web layers is, the higher the absorption coefficient of the non-woven. However, the variation was not significant when the various sound absorption frequencies were observed. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in plastic bottles, packaging, and textile fibers. However, PET is difficult to degrade in nature and rapidly accumulates into the environment, causing serious environmental pollution and threatening human health. At present, the recycling methods for PET mainly focus on physical recycling and chemical degradation, but these methods have severe limitations, resulting in the great loss of valuable materials and secondary pollution. In contrast, the biodegradation of PET is gradually attracting attention because of its environmental friendliness, high efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Several PET-degrading enzymes (PDEs) have been previously identified, such as cutinase, IsPETase, lipase, and esterase. Thereafter, many efforts have been made to push the boundaries of evolution schemes, attempting to create stronger PDEs with improved activity and stability. Nevertheless, most of these enzymes show preferences toward low-crystallinity (<10%) PET, while in situ enzymatic degradation of high-crystallinity PET (30%–50%) remains a major challenge. Exploring and engineering PDEs that can efficiently degrade bottle-grade PET plastics has recently become a research hotspot. The mineralization mechanism responsible for the fossilization of archaeological textiles in close proximity to metal artifacts presents a sophisticated preservation process at both macro and micro levels. This study examines archaeological textiles dating from 2200 BC to AD 1900, sourced from three distinct archaeological sites. The focus is on understanding the microstructural degradation of fibers within a specific burial environment and the preservation achieved through mineralization. These archaeological fibers of archaeological textiles exhibit morphological preservation in the immediate vicinity of copper-based objects. Utilizing tools such as a digital camera, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), high-resolution synchrotron-based microtomography (μCT), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), we examined fiber morphology, conducted elemental analysis, identified fiber types, and analyzed fiber characteristics. Our findings reveal the presence of smooth-surfaced wools and silks, fibers covered with calculi, and fiber impressions—all subjected to mineralization. These mineralized fibers can be categorized into three distinct stages of mineralization, each exhibiting varying carbon content. We inferred a correlation between mineralization rate and carbon content while also identifying mineralization density distribution on these textiles. Lastly, this study provides insights into the preservation states of textiles across three different mineralization stages, enriching our understanding of the deterioration of organic archaeological material. Simple Summary: Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.), traditionally used for textile fiber, has gained interest as animal feed due to its nutritional properties. This study investigated the impact of supplementing goats' diets with hemp hay on the milk yield, composition, and fatty acid profile of 20 dairy goats. The milk yield was higher in the hemp group, though the milk composition remained unchanged. The fatty acid profile of the hemp group's milk showed lower levels of certain saturated fatty acids (C11:0, C12:0, C13:0, C14:0, C15:0, and C17:0) and higher levels of C16:0 and C18:0. Additionally, the hemp group's milk had lower levels of some polyunsaturated fatty acids (C18:2 n6 and C20:4) but higher C20:5 n3 levels. Hemp hay may represent an advantageous alternative as feed supplementation in grazing goats' diet. Also, in terms of eco-sustainability and the efficiency of agricultural production, the hemp hay is a by-product of the supply chain, which may represent an additional benefit of its use in ruminant nutrition. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a cosmopolitan annual herbaceous plant used in the past as a source of textile fiber. Currently, hemp is receiving great interest as animal feed due to its chemical and nutritional properties. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of supplementing goats' diets with hemp hay on the milk yield, chemical composition, and fatty acid profile. Twenty multiparous goats, immediately after kidding, were divided into two homogenous groups (C: control vs. H: hemp); the goats had free access to the pasture, and both groups received a supplement of 500 g/head/day of a barley and corn meal mixture (50/50). In addition, group H was given 250 g/head/day of hemp hay while group C received the same amount of alfalfa hay. The milk yield was measured daily, and milk samples were collected monthly 4 times to evaluate the milk composition and fatty acid profile. The milk yield was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the experimental group, while no differences were found in the milk chemical composition. Concerning the fatty acid profile, the milk from group H was characterized by significantly lower concentrations of C11:0, C12:0, C13:0, C14:0, C15:0, and C17:0 and higher C16:0 and C18:0. Among the polyunsaturated FA, C18:2 n6 and C20:4 were significantly (p < 0.001) lower, and C20:5 n3 was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the milk from group H than that from group C. Hydration‐induced shape‐morphing behavior has been discovered in many natural fiber‐based materials, yet this smart behavior in regenerated fibers from biopolymers lacks investigation. Here, hierarchically structured silk fibers are developed with anisotropic long‐range molecular organization and water‐responsive effects resembling natural spider silk. The regenerated silk fibers exhibit the water‐triggered shape‐memory effect and a water‐driven cyclic response. The reversible hydrogen bonds and transformation in the metastable secondary structure from α‐helices/random coils to β‐sheets are explored as the mechanisms responsible for the water‐responsiveness. The silk fibers obtained possess a tensile strength higher than 104 MPa at a fracture strain of ≈100%, showing noticeable toughness. The water‐responsive silk fibers exhibit a shape recovery rate of ∼83% and generate a maximum actuation stress of up to 18 MPa during the water‐driven cyclic contraction that outperforms most traditional natural textile fibers. The regenerated silk fibers show potential for use in water‐driven actuators, artificial muscle, and smart fabrics based on the integration of suitable mechanical properties and water responsiveness. Cotton (Gossypium spp.) not only serves as a primary textile fiber crop but also as a vital oilseed crop. It stands as the world's fifth-largest oil crop and is rich in essential fatty acids. At present, the mechanisms underlying the biosynthesis of cottonseed oil have been extensively studied in cotton. 3-Hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydratase (HACD) is the third rate-limiting enzyme in the elongase complex, which plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of Very Long Chain Fatty Acids (VLCFA). However, the members of the HACD family and their roles in cottonseed oil remain uncharacterized in cotton. This study identified that G. arboreum and G. raimondii have two HACD genes, while four HACD genes exists in G. hirsutum, and G. barbadense. The phylogenetic relationships of the 12 HACD genes from the four cotton species further divided them into two subfamilies. Gene structure and conserved motif analysis revealed that members of the HACD family were relatively conserved during the evolution of cotton, but members within the same subfamily exhibited more similar structures. Homology and collinearity analysis suggest whole-genome duplication/segmental duplication may be a key factor in the amplification of the cotton HACD gene family. The qRT-PCR analysis of high-oil and low-oil genotype found significant differences in the expression levels of GhHACD1-4, which indicates GhHACD1-4 is expected to participate in the lipid oil biosynthesis process. Subcellular localization experiments confirmed the presence of the GhHACD2 inendoplasmic reticulum. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of co-expressed genes of GhHACD1 and GhHACD2 genes were conducted to confirm their potential involvement in fatty acid elongation and oil biosynthesis. Furthermore, transgenic overexpression analysis of GhHACD2 caused a 5.02% decrease in oil content compared with the control in yeast, while the levels of C28:0, C30:0, and VLCFAs were significantly improved. This study characterizes HACD gene family members in cotton and provides rich genetic resources for increasing cottonseed oil content and improving the nutritional value of cottonseed oil. Textile Composites is a resin system containing a textile fiber, yarn, or fabric system for special properties. Cord knit is a simple and economic and fast technique for producing tubular textile fabrics. This article studied the effect of some variables such as outer layer yarn count and core material of poly-amide cord knitted fabrics on its properties and applying it as a cord-knitted composite bar for reinforcing concrete. six samples with two different outer layer yarn counts (1200 and 2400 denier) and three different core materials (polyamide, fiberglass, and polyethylene 50%, and polypropylene 50%) were produced and tested, then inserted in epoxy to convert to a composite cord. The properties of composite cord knitted fabrics were tested. Then different numbers of bars were used (one bar, two bars, and three bars) from the highest properties cord knitted poly-amide composite fabrics for reinforcing concrete beams (50 cm*10cm*10cm), flexure of those beams were tested and it was found that using two bars from poly-amide composite has the highest effect on reinforcing concrete beams. Cashmere goats possess two types of hair follicles, with the secondary hair follicles producing valuable cashmere fiber used for textiles. The growth of cashmere exhibits a seasonal pattern arising from photoperiod change. Transcription factors play crucial roles during this process. The transcription factor, cold-shock domain, containing C2 (Csdc2) plays a crucial role in modulating cell proliferation and differentiation. Our preceding research indicated that the expression of Csdc2 changes periodically during anagen to telogen. However, the mechanisms of Csdc2 in regulating SHF growth remain unclear. Here, we found that the knockdown of Csdc2 inhibits the proliferation of dermal papilla cells. ChIP-Seq analysis showed that Csdc2 had a unique DNA binding motif in SHFs. Through conjoint analysis of ChIP-Seq and RNA-Seq, we revealed a total of 25 candidate target genes of Csdc2. Notably, we discovered a putative Csdc2 binding site within roundabout guidance receptor 2 (Robo2) on chromosome 1 of the goat genome. Furthermore, qRT-PCR and dual-luciferase reporter assay confirmed Csdc2's positive regulatory influence on Robo2. These findings expand the research field of hair follicle transcriptional regulatory networks, offering insights into molecular breeding strategies to enhance cashmere production in goats. The main aim of the present work is to evaluate and characterize the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of wastes coming from the textile industry, mainly composed of cotton and polyester. These wastes will be thereafter implemented in commodity plastic such as polyamide, in order to develop new formulations of environmentally friendly materials. The composites were produced by extrusion and injection-molded processes in amounts between 15 wt.% and 60 wt.% of textile waste. With the objective of improving the properties of the materials, silanes were used as a compatibilizer between the textile fibers and the polymeric matrix. The effect of the compatibilizer in the composites was studied together with the effect of the amount of textile fiber added to the composites. Mechanical, thermal, morphological and wettability properties were analyzed for each composite. The results show that the use of silanes improves the interaction especially in those composites with a higher amount of textile waste, offering a balanced mechanical behavior with significantly high quantities. On the other hand, the melting temperature does not vary significantly with the introduction of silanes and textile waste content, although the incorporation of textile waste slightly reduces up to 23% the degradation temperature of the resulting composites. The wettability of the composites is also increased up to 16% with the incorporation of textile waste. Finally, the appearance of the composites with textile waste is strongly influenced by the incorporation of the reinforcement, offering shades close to dark brown in the whole range of compositions. As a good alternative to natural fibers and petroleum-derived fibers, Lyocell fibers draw increasing interests owing to its advantages of sustainable forest source, low carbon emission, high strength and comfort. However, Lyocell exhibits significant fibrillation behavior under friction, which seriously reduce product quality and limit its further development. Herein, dual crosslinking networks were innovatively constructed in Lyocell cellulose structure to enhance the interaction of cellulose macromolecular chains. Bifunctional reactive dyes were loaded in the inner part of Lyocell fiber to form a primary crosslinking network. Then, the cellulose interaction in Lyocell skin layer was further enhanced after the coating by cationic waterborne polyurethane. The mechanism was determined and results showed that durable dual crosslinking networks were formed in Lyocell cellulose structure. From scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, fibrillation behavior of Lyocell fibers was effectively prevented by dual crosslinking networks. Meanwhile, the durability was evaluated, showing that the treated fabric maintained good anti-fibrillation performance after washing for 50 times. Furthermore, the interaction of dyes and fibers was also enhanced by the cationic polymer via electrostatic attraction force, realizing high dye utilization efficiency. The identification of components iiSkwaste temiles has the proJJems of high labor cost and low efficiency. A machine learning rapid identification method based on Raman spectroscopy is a potential solution to solve this problem. However, machine learning methods typically require a large amount of data for training. In order to reduce the cost of data collection and improve the classification accuracy of models for textile fibers in small sample Raman spectroscopy datasets, a Raman spectroscopy data aupnentation method was proposed. This method enhances the data on preprocessed Raman spectroscopy datasets of 5 textile fibers by specifying Pearson correlation coefficients combined with signal-to-noise ratio formula for noise superposition and linear combination of Dirichlet distribution. The results show that after data augmentation, the SVMp°ly model achieves an average accuracy of 92. 4% in 10 rounds of 2-fold cross validation, which is 68. 2% higher than the original Raman spectroscopy dataset. This work aims to extract and characterize the fibers from the Schoenoplectus acutus plant and assess their suitability for use as textile fibers. The fibers from Schoenoplectus acutus plants were extracted using alkaline extraction, water retting, and manual methods; their physical, mechanical, and chemical properties were examined. The result showed that the fiber has a tensile strength of 254.2 MPa, 302.6 MPa, and 183.4 MPa for manual, water‐retted, and alkaline extraction methods, respectively. The mean values of fiber fineness were 1.32 ± 0.2 Tex for alkali‐extracted fibers, 1.43 ± 0.2 Tex for water‐retted fibers, and 1.64.01 ± 0.4 Tex for manually extracted fibers. The fiber contained 58% cellulose, 25.4% hemicellulose, and 13% lignin for manual extracted fibers, whereas fibers obtained from the water‐retted method had 62.8% cellulose, 20.3% hemicellulose, and 10% lignin. Similarly, alkaline extracted fibers contained 60.2% cellulose, 17.8% hemicellulose, and 6.8% lignin. Generally, the extracted fiber has acceptable mechanical properties, linear density, and moisture regain, which can serve as an alternative source of textile fibers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chemical recycling of cotton towels via the Ioncell® technique is demonstrated. Cotton is the most common natural fiber. The season's value jumped 31% to 54.3 billion US$ in 2020/2021, and annually the average value in quota‐free periods accounts to 46.3 billion US$. Consequently, enormous amounts of cotton wastes are emerging. Especially, European countries are forced by the new legislation of the union to develop new recycling strategies. Due to uncountable cotton applications, various types of garments exist, which require different recycling strategies. The recycling of an additional cotton waste side stream of Lindström Oy white pre and dyed and white postconsumer cotton roll towels was pursued. The mechanical properties of the fibers and yarns have been evaluated. Thereby, the following elongations and tenacities of conditioned fibers produced at DR11 have been achieved: 10.4%/59.5 cN/tex for preconsumer and 10.6%/60.4 cN/tex for postconsumer white cotton, 10.4%/60.0 cN/tex for postconsumer blue cotton. The achieved elongations at break are close to values reported in literature (7%–14%), however, the tenacities exceed reported values (40–58 cN/tex). This study aims to explore the flexural behavior of crushed clay brick (CCB) lightweight concrete (LWC) beams strengthened with rubberized strain-hardening cementitious composite reinforced with glass fiber textile mesh layers (GFTM-RSHCC) at the tension side. For this purpose, an experimental investigation consisting of seven simply supported beams, including one un-strengthened specimen, was produced and tested using a monotonic 4-point loading scheme. All specimens had a 120 × 250 mm cross-section, a total length of 2400 mm, and a loaded span of 2200 mm. The studied parameters were the number of GFTM inside the RSHCC (1, 2, or 3) and the thickness of GFTM-RSHCC layer (30 or 40 mm). All the following aspects were tracked: crack pattern, ultimate load, mid-span defection, and ductility. The results show that increasing the number of layers of GFTM and the thickness of RSHCC generally leads to an increase in the ultimate loads and ductility, up to 68% and 83%, respectively, compared to the control beam. Finally, a proposed equation considering the contribution of the GFTM-RSHCC layer was developed to predict the flexural capacity of the strengthened beams. Modern science and technology constantly require new and novel materials with special properties. Over the past decade, Nanocomposites materials have received significant attention as active materials in components ranging from sensors to biomaterials, electronics devices to structural parts. These novel composites have applications in many areas, such as energy, insulation, manufacturing, and the modern building industry. However, not all applications have the same requirements in terms of acoustic insulation, so it is useful to adapt the kind of core materials and their product specifications, such as particle size and porosity, to the different applications. Furthermore, in some applications, cheaper core materials, like precipitated silica, would be a reasonable alternative to replace the time-consuming series of measurements. Because of many bad conditions that affect acoustic insulation properties in modern buildings. And to summarize recent applications of nanotechnology as they relate to textile fibers, yarns, and fabrics for improving acoustic insulation in modern buildings and civilian communities, this paper discusses the ability to apply 3D woven spacer fabric (3DWSF) composite materials reinforced with epoxy, rigid polyurethane foam, and silica nanoporous particles, which were prepared by the sol-gel technique. Four samples had been prepared, all of these samples were textile composite materials, and reinforced with two types of nano silica 99.8% SiO2; mesoporous Ns particles with porosity up to 83%, true density 0.08 g/cm³, and particle size between 100 and 2000 nm and pore size 70–150 nm, which had been prepared by Sol-gel technique, and nonporous Aerosil®200 particles with surface area 200–225 m2/g, true density 0.25 g/cm³, and particle size between 2 and 20 nm. We used rigid polyurethane foam as core material, and epoxy resin for laminating the fabric. 3D spacer E-glass fabrics, and chopped E-glass microfibers had been used. The weight percentage of silica nano particles which were used in this research was 5% by weight, which was better for economic reasons, and enough, to enhance the acoustic absorption coefficient up to R w = 99.79%. The best sound absorption could be achieved by using mesoporous silica nanoparticles, and soundproofing of an insulator using this porous structure is better than using a nonporous one. We found in this research that the thickness 45 mm and semi-porosity structure of the 3DWSF composite insulator material were enough to make a difference, with reference to the thermal and acoustic insulation guide of buildings. The fast growth of building constructions industry and of the universal population is the main cause of increase in global energy consumption. Therefore, the improvement of the building envelope encourages the scientific community to investigate the use of alternative materials that assure indoor comfort conditions and at the same time promote the reduction of energy consumption by adopting energy saving strategies in the manufacturing process. The present research contribution aims to focus on the potential use of innovative building materials developed with waste paper, classified as urban non-hazardous discard component. The use of paper pulp originated from recycled paper and cardboard with the addition of textile fibers from industrial by-products was explored. Here, an effort has been made to realize sustainable insulating panel for internal use, considering different mix design and recycled components in various percentages. The research focuses on hygric, thermal, and physical performances of recycled waste based panels, measuring physical aspects as bulk porosity and bulk density and testing hygrothermal performances as the dry-state thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, volumetric heat capacity, and water vapour permeability. Furthermore, in order to assess the hygrothermal behaviour of the building envelope, a numerical simulation, carried out by WUFI® Plus in a Mediterranean context, was developed using as inputs the results collected from the measurement campaign in laboratory. Various types of foreign fibres may be mixed in the planting, transportation, and production processes of cotton, which not only cause equipment to be out of control, but also leads to a decrease in the quality of cotton textile products and economic losses. The machine vision based detection method for cotton foreign fibres is widely used. Based on existing related research, we construct a classification dataset for cotton foreign fibres in practical scenarios, named the CF2113‐10 dataset. The authors design a basic foreign fibre classification network called CottonNet that balances performance and efficiency. The classification accuracy on the validation set reached 94.2%. In order to enhance the high‐level feature extraction ability, this paper improves the feature fusion method of residual networks and proposes CottonNet‐Res, which improves the classification accuracy to 95.1%. Finally, a classification model based on feature difference fitting, CottonNet‐Fusion, is proposed to address the classification problem of foreign fibre images sampled in complex environments. The classification accuracy of foreign fibre images sampled in ordinary scenes has improved to 97.4%, while the images sampled in complex environments maintain an accuracy of 90.3%. The growing need for materials that are eco-friendly and sustainable in the industrial sector has shifted focus from synthetic fossil to natural fibers, alongside the utilization of recycled polymer textiles. This research introduces a novel method for using end-of-life textiles, such as polyester and polyamide fabrics, in the production of composite materials, aiming to lessen textile waste and enhance material longevity. The mechanical attributes of flax fabric (FF), flax–recycled polyamide fabric (F/RPA), and flax–recycled polyester fabric (F/RPES) composite laminates are assessed through tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, and Charpy impact tests. The study revealed that the addition of end-of-life synthetic fibers improves tensile strength, while the trend in modulus values suggests that flax provides a high degree of stiffness to the composites, which is moderated by the addition of synthetic fibers. This effect is consistent across both tensile and flexural testing, although the impact on stiffness is more significant in bending. The inclusion of polyester fibers in the composite laminate resulted in significant enhancements, with an 11.1% increase in interlaminar shear maximum force, a 17.4% improvement in interlaminar shear strength, and a 67.1% rise in un-notch impact energy, compared to composites made with only flax fiber (FF). The microscopic examination uncovered the internal structure and demonstrated a clear, strong bond between the polyester and polyamide fiber layers with the flax fibers. Additionally, the life cycle assessment revealed that the F/RPES composite had less environmental impact than FF and F/RPA in all 18 categories analyzed. A recent renaissance of industrial hemp has been driven by a plethora of ecologically amicable products and their profitability. To identify its environment and economic fate across the value chain (VC), this study conducts a systematic review of 98 studies published in ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Scopus‐indexed journals. The thematic content of the articles is categorized using three deductively derived classification categories: lifecycle analysis (n = 40), VC analysis (n = 30), and feasibility analysis (n = 28). Bibliometric analysis indicates that the majority (>90%) of the studies were conducted in selected regions of Europe or North America, with further findings around regionally prioritized industrial hemp products, such as hempcrete in Southwest Europe, solid biofuel in North European states, and textile fiber and bio‐composites in East Europe and North America. Lifecycle analysis studies highlight nitrogenous fertilizer use during industrial hemp cultivation as a major ecological hotspot, which is taking a toll on the climate change index. However, hemp‐based products are generally climate‐friendly solutions when contrasted against their fossil fuel counterparts, with hempcrete in particular a highly touted carbon‐negative (−4.28 to −36.08 kg CO2 eq/m2) product. The review also identifies key issues within the hemp VC and presents innovative solutions alongside the recognition of value‐adding opportunities. Furthermore, feasibility analysis indicates unprofitability in using hemp for bioenergy production and there is a relative cost worthiness of hemp bio‐composites and hempcrete at the upstream level. Positive returns are observed under co‐production schemes. In contemplating the literature findings, we discussed and identified gap in existing literature for future exploration, including more studies to provide insights from the Global South, and the production of industrial hemp under a biophysically constrained landscape. Foreign Body Reaction (FBR) is a critical issue when polyester textiles are used as medical implants to perform hernia repair, stenosed artery replacement or aneurysm pathology treatment. Whatever the application, the natural porosity of textile materials tends to induce exaggerated biological tissue in-growth after implantation. This mechanism can prevent the implant from remaining flexible and should be limited. It has been shown in literature that one potential strategy to limit the FBR process is to increase the surface roughness of the implanted material, as fibroblasts proliferate slowlier on irregular surfaces. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of modifying the topography of textile surfaces using a particle projection technology. A supercritical N2 jet was used to spray corundum particles on multi-filament PET woven surfaces. The impact of the particles created local filament ruptures on the treated surfaces towards hairiness increase. The influence of the jet projection parameters such as pressure, standoff distance (SoD), particle size and mass flow rate on the textile surface roughness was investigated. Two constructions were considered for comparison purpose (plain weave constructions characterized by 34 and 28 weft yarns/cm). The results show that under certain projection conditions, particles can generate a layer of frayed fibers on the textile surface. It comes out that regular hairiness is obtained on the sample surface with following set up adjustment parameters: pressure of 900 bars, SoD of 400 mm and a particle mass flow rate of 0.6 g/s. The interaction of the treated surfaces with mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) was then assessed in vitro in order to identify how hairiness may modify the adhesion (at 24 h) and the proliferation (at 72 h) of the seeded cells. The results show that the obtained hairiness of treated textile surfaces helps limiting cell proliferation in contrast to non-treated surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
