The arthropod intestinal tract and other anatomical parts naturally carry microorganisms. Some of which are pathogens, secrete toxins, or carry transferable antibiotic-resistance genes. The risks associated with the production and consumption of edible arthropods are dependent on indigenous microbes, as well as microbes introduced during the processes of rearing. This mass arthropod production puts individual arthropods in close proximity, which increases the possibility of their exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria carried by bacteria from fellow insects, industry workers, or rearing hardware and substrates. The purpose of this study was to determine if the alimentary tract of the yellow mealworm provided an environment permitting horizontal gene transfer between bacteria. The effect of the concentration of bacterial exposure was also assessed. Antibiotic resistance gene transfer between marker Salmonella Lignières (Enterobacterales: Enterobacteriaceae) and Escherichia coli (Migula) (Enterobacterales: Enterobacteriaceae) introduced into the larval gut demonstrated that the nutrient-rich environment of the yellow mealworm gut provided favorable conditions for the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. Conjugation frequencies were similar across inoculum concentrations; however, transconjugant production correlated positively to increased exposure concentration. The lowest concentration of bacterial exposure required enrichment to detect and thus may have been approaching a threshold level for the 2 bacteria to colocate within the expanse of the larval gut. While many factors can affect this transfer, the simple factor of the proximity of donor and recipient bacteria, as defined by the concentration of bacteria within the volume of the insect gut, likely primarily contributed to the efficiency of antibiotic gene transfer. Violent conflicts involving non-State armed groups challenge conventional perceptions of war and armed conflict. Criminal enterprises (transnational organized criminal groups including gangs and cartels) are involved in violent competition for both profit and territorial control in many parts of the world. This paper examines the situation in Mexico and Brazil as case studies to assess the legal challenges to criminal armed violence when criminal groups battle among themselves and the State. Modern urban siege is a metaphor for evolved urban campaigns. The template for such attacks draws from the tactics seen in the 26/11 Mumbai attack in 2008, and continued with the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Kenya, the January 2015 Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher attacks in Paris and the November 2015 attacks against the Stade de France and Bataclan. These virtual sieges employ swarming tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) to provide a template for urban strife and insecurity. This article provides an overview of terrorist swarming tactics, expanding the aperture to review the use of similar TTPs by criminal gangs in Brazil in the Novo Cagngaço style high intensity robberies and raids. The article will then review the October 2019 Battle of Culiacán or Culiacanazo, where elements of the Cártel de Sinaloa (CDS) employed urban siege TTPs to counter the arrest of cartel leaders by state security forces. The second incident occurred in January 2023 when the CDS again employed swarming TTPs in an unsuccessful attempt to thwart the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An introduction is presented in which the author discusses articles within the issue on topics including urban security and threat of conflict in urban areas, urban warfare and emergency response to urban terror, artificial intelligence and data processing, and rise of megacities and mega slums as a result of increased urbanization.

The global health and wellness industry has an estimated value of US$4 trillion. Profits derive from heath club memberships, exercise classes, diets, supplements, alternative 'therapies', and thousands of other products and services that are purported to improve health, recovery, and/or sports performance. The industry has expanded at an alarming rate, far outstripping the capacity of federal bodies to regulate the market and protect consumer interests. As a result, many products are sold on baseless or exaggerated claims, feigned scientific legitimacy, and questionable evidence of safety and efficacy. This article is a consciousness raiser. Herein, the implications of the mismatch between extraordinary health and performance claims and the unextraordinary scientific evidence are discussed. Specifically, we explore how pseudoscience and so-called 'quick fix' interventions undermine initiatives aimed at evoking long-term behavior change, impede the ongoing pursuit of sports performance, and lead to serious downstream consequences for clinical practice. Moreover, pseudoscience in health and wellness, if left unchecked and unchallenged, may have profound implications for the reputation of exercise science as a discipline. This is a call to action to unify exercise scientists around the world to more proactively challenge baseless claims and pseudoscience in the commercial health and wellness industry. Furthermore, we must shoulder the burden of ensuring that the next generation of exercise scientists are sufficiently skilled to distinguish science from pseudoscience, and information from mis- and disinformation. In his landmark trilogy, The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture, sociologist Manuel Castells argued that networks, information technology, and global economic flows were altering the nature of politics, power, and states. This article examines the network dynamics Castells wrote about in relation to transnational crime and illicit economic markets. Heteromormyrus Steindachner, 1866, a genus of Mormyridae (Teleostei: Osteoglossomorpha), has been monotypic since the description of Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus (Steindacher, 1866) from a single specimen. No type locality other than "Angola" was given and almost no specimens have been subsequently identified to this species. In order to investigate the relationship of this taxon to fresh specimens collected in Angola and elsewhere, whole genome paired-end sequencing of DNA extracted from the holotype specimen of Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus was performed and a nearly complete mitogenome assembled from the sequences obtained. Comparison of cytochrome oxidase I and cytochrome b sequences from this mitogenome to sequences from recently collected material reveal that Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus is closely related to specimens identified as Hippopotamyrus ansorgii (Boulenger, 1905), Hippopotamyrus szaboi Kramer, van der Bank & Wink, 2004, Hippopotamyrus longilateralis Kramer & Swartz, 2010, as well as to several undescribed forms from subequatorial Africa collectively referred to in the literature as the "Hippopotamyrus ansorgii species complex" and colloquially known as "slender stonebashers." Previous molecular phylogenetic work has shown that these species are not close relatives of Hippopotamyrus castor Pappenheim, 1906, the type species of genus Hippopotamyrus Pappenheim, 1906 from Cameroon, and are thus misclassified. Hippopotamyrus ansorgii species complex taxa and another species shown to have been misclassified, Paramormyrops tavernei (Poll, 1972), are placed in genus Heteromormyrus and one genetic lineage from the Kwanza and Lucala rivers of Angola are identified as conspecific Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus. Three additional new combinations and a synonymy in Mormyridae are introduced. The morphological characteristics and geographical distribution of the genus Heteromormyrus are reviewed. This article assesses Mexico's organized crime alliance and subgroup network structures. Through social network analysis (SNA) of data from Lantia Consultores, a consulting firm in Mexico that specializes in the analysis of public policies, it demonstrates differential alliance structures within Mexico's bipolar illicit network system. The Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación's (CJNG) alliance structure is top-down and hierarchical, while the Sinaloa Cartel is denser, particularly in the broader Tierra Caliente region. Additionally, our analysis found a sparse overall network with many isolates (groups with no relations to other groups) and disconnected components. Further, we identified organized crime networks that might fill future power vacuums based on their network positions, following state or rival high-value targeting of major cartels. Bonytongues (Osteoglossomorpha) constitute an ancient clade of teleost fishes distributed in freshwater habitats throughout the world. The group includes well-known species such as arowanas, featherbacks, pirarucus, and the weakly electric fishes in the family Mormyridae. Their disjunct distribution, extreme morphologies, and electrolocating capabilities (Gymnarchidae and Mormyridae) have attracted much scientific interest, but a comprehensive phylogenetic framework for comparative analysis is missing, especially for the species-rich family Mormyridae. Of particular interest are disparate craniofacial morphologies among mormyrids which might constitute an exceptional model system to study convergent evolution. We present a phylogenomic analysis based on 546 exons of 179 species (out of 260), 28 out of 29 genera, and all six families of extant bonytongues. Based on a recent reassessment of the fossil record of osteoglossomorphs, we inferred dates of divergence among transcontinental clades and the major groups. The estimated ages of divergence among extant taxa (e.g. Osteoglossomorpha, Osteoglossiformes, and Mormyroidea) are older than previous reports, but most of the divergence dates obtained for clades on separate continents are too young to be explained by simple vicariance hypotheses. Biogeographic analysis of mormyrids indicates that their high species diversity in the Congo Basin is a consequence of range reductions of previously widespread ancestors and that the highest diversity of craniofacial morphologies among mormyrids originated in this basin. Special emphasis on a taxon-rich representation for mormyrids revealed pervasive misalignment between our phylogenomic results and mormyrid taxonomy due to repeated instances of convergence for extreme craniofacial morphologies. Estimation of ancestral phenotypes revealed contingent evolution of snout elongation and unique projections from the lower jaw to form the distinctive Schnauzenorgan. Synthesis of comparative analyses suggests that the remarkable craniofacial morphologies of mormyrids evolved convergently due to niche partitioning, likely enabled by interactions between their exclusive morphological and electrosensory adaptations. While conflict, crime, and terrorism are persistent geopolitical and human security threats, climate change can be a threat multiplier, affecting geopolitical stability on local, regional, and global scales. This paper provides a qualitative assessment of the literature and geopolitical trends related to climate change, migration, and ethnocentrism in order to evaluate the current situation and future potentials for climate-driven conflict, crime, terrorism, and ethnocentric extremism. The paper concludes that as climate change becomes a major driver of environmental degradation, natural disasters, mass migrations, and urbanization, this will escalate the impetus for violence against migrants, the exploitation of migrants, and anti-migrant politics. We report the thermoelectric characteristics of individual p-type SiGe alloy nanowires for diameters of 100 to 300 nm and temperatures between 40 to 300 K. A technique that allows for electrical and thermal characterization on the same nanowire was developed in this work. Experimental data provide evidence of the scattering of low-frequency phonons by the boundary of the nanowires. The thermal conductivities for SiGe alloy nanowires with different free carrier concentrations reveal that the long free path phonons are also scattered by hole-phonon interactions. Combined boundary and hole-phonon scattering mechanisms with alloy scattering resulted in thermal conductivities as low as 1.1 W/m-K at 300 K, which is one of the lowest measured for SiGe alloys and is comparable to that of bulk silica. The enhanced thermal properties observed in this work yielded ZT close to 0.18 at 300 K-more than a factor of 2 higher than the bulk SiGe alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Taxonomy includes organism names and classifications for every sequence in the nucleotide and protein sequence databases of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration. Since the last review of this resource in 2012, it has undergone several improvements. Most notable is the shift from a single SQL database to a series of linked databases tied to a framework of data called NameBank. This means that relations among data elements can be adjusted in more detail, resulting in expanded annotation of synonyms, the ability to flag names with specific nomenclatural properties, enhanced tracking of publications tied to names and improved annotation of scientific authorities and types. Additionally, practices utilized by NCBI Taxonomy curators specific to major taxonomic groups are described, terms peculiar to NCBI Taxonomy are explained, external resources are acknowledged and updates to tools and other resources are documented. The elite sports environment provides a unique setting for studying human performance, where both cognitive and physical demands are high. Successful performance in sport is contingent upon key cognitive skills such as attention, perception, working memory and decision-making. The demands of competitive sport also increase loading on the central nervous system (CNS). Neuroimaging methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) offer the potential to investigate the cognitive demands of sport, neuroplasticity of athletes, and biofeedback training. However, practical and technical limitations of these methods have generally limited their use to laboratory-based studies of athletes during simulated sporting tasks. This review article, provides a brief overview of research that has applied neuroimaging technology to study various aspects of cognitive function during sports performance in athletes, alternative methods for measuring CNS loading [e.g., direct current (DC) potential], possible solutions and avenues of focus for future neuroergonomics research in sport. The commercial market for technologies to monitor and improve personal health and sports performance is ever expanding. A wide range of smart watches, bands, garments, and patches with embedded sensors, small portable devices and mobile applications now exist to record and provide users with feedback on many different physical performance variables. These variables include cardiorespiratory function, movement patterns, sweat analysis, tissue oxygenation, sleep, emotional state, and changes in cognitive function following concussion. In this review, we have summarized the features and evaluated the characteristics of a cross-section of technologies for health and sports performance according to what the technology is claimed to do, whether it has been validated and is reliable, and if it is suitable for general consumer use. Consumers who are choosing new technology should consider whether it (1) produces desirable (or non-desirable) outcomes, (2) has been developed based on real-world need, and (3) has been tested and proven effective in applied studies in different settings. Among the technologies included in this review, more than half have not been validated through independent research. Only 5% of the technologies have been formally validated. Around 10% of technologies have been developed for and used in research. The value of such technologies for consumer use is debatable, however, because they may require extra time to set up and interpret the data they produce. Looking to the future, the rapidly expanding market of health and sports performance technology has much to offer consumers. To create a competitive advantage, companies producing health and performance technologies should consult with consumers to identify real-world need, and invest in research to prove the effectiveness of their products. To get the best value, consumers should carefully select such products, not only based on their personal needs, but also according to the strength of supporting evidence and effectiveness of the products. Abstract: Accurate proton flux measurements of the near‐Earth environment are essential to the understanding of many phenomena which have a direct impact on our lives. Currently, there is only a small set of satellites capable of performing these measurements which makes certain studies and analyses difficult. This paper details the capabilities of the Combined X‐ray Dosimeter (CXD), flown on 21 satellites of the Global Positioning System constellation, as it relates to proton measurements. We present a cross calibration of the CXD with the Energetic Particle Sensor (EPS) onboard the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. By utilizing Solar Energetic Particle Events when both sets of satellites were operational we have orders of magnitude in flux and energy to compare against. Robust statistical analyses show that the CXD and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite flux calculations are similar and that for proton energies >30 MeV the CXD fluxes are on average within 20% of EPS. Although the CXD has a response to protons as low as 6 MeV, the sensitivity at energies below 20 MeV is reduced and so flux comparisons of these are generally worse. Integral flux values >10 MeV are typically within 40% of EPS. These calibrated CXD data sets will give researchers capabilities to study solar proton access to the inner magnetosphere down to L ~ 4 near the equatorial plane at high temporal cadence. Species of the African electric fish in the genus Paramormyrops Taverne, Thys van den Audenaerde & Heymer, 1977 constitute a recently recognized species flock with an impressive diversity of electric signals, but only modest morphological differentiation. For more than a century, confusion has surrounded the identity of Paramormyrops sphekodes (Sauvage, 1879), the earliest described species in this genus. Here we compare the morphometrics of type material to new specimens collected at the type locality on the Ogooué River of Gabon from which we additionally study DNA sequences and electric organ discharges (EODs). Based on our findings, we revise the diagnosis and description of P. sphekodes and also identify and describe a new species of Paramormyrops that is large, common and widespread in the Ogooué River basin, but cryptic and easily confounded with P. sphekodes. We designate as lectotype of P. sphekodes a specimen formerly regarded, in error, as the holotype and a second specimen originally collected with the lectotype as paralectotype. We conclude that only nine additional specimens can be identified with confidence as P. sphekodes: four from the type locality and five from a second site 45 km away. Instead of being widespread as previously thought, P. sphekodes may be restricted to a small region of the upper Ogooué River basin. Additionally, we present a revised diagnosis for the genus Paramormyrops Taverne et al., 1977, and key to species from Lower Guinea. This study illustrates the value of vouchered EOD recordings and of revisiting type localities, and lays a foundation for additional systematic work on this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author discusses concerns that the sport community may be convinced by pseudoscience due to sport-technology companies using neuroscience and social psychology in their marketing plans. It notes the opportunities provided by the wearable market to collect an endless amount of data that opened up opportunities in medicine, occupational health and sport. It cites recommendations to be considered when using devices such as asking questions about the scientific basis for the device.

A microfabricated liquid cell that permits imaging and controlling of electrochemical processes in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) has been developed, and its capabilities are demonstrated. The liquid cell comprises two silicon chips with suspended electron-transparent silicon nitride membranes that encapsulate and hermetically seal a thin ( $\sim 100$ nm) liquid layer in the TEM high-vacuum environment. Up to 10 integrated electrodes with selectively exposed areas allow multiple experiments to be performed on the same chip, and the electrode geometry has been designed to facilitate the assembly of nanostructures or nanoscale patterning of thin-film materials on the electrodes. We demonstrate the cell operation by picoampere-level electrochemical control and imaging of copper electrodeposition. A wide variety of materials and electrolytes may be studied with this cell design, and the relatively small ( \sim 1 \mu $ \mathrm{m}^{2} ) exposed electrode areas enable quantitative electrochemical control at low currents.
