Quantum supervised learning, utilizing variational circuits, stands out as a promising technology for NISQ devices due to its efficiency in hardware resource utilization during the creation of quantum feature maps and the implementation of hardware-efficient ansatz with trainable parameters. Despite these advantages, the training of quantum models encounters challenges, notably the barren plateau phenomenon, leading to stagnation in learning during optimization iterations. This study proposes an innovative approach: an evolutionary-enhanced ansatz-free supervised learning model. In contrast to parametrized circuits, our model employs circuits with variable topology that evolve through an elitist method, mitigating the barren plateau issue. Additionally, we introduce a novel concept, the superposition of multi-hot encodings, facilitating the treatment of multi-classification problems. Our framework successfully avoids stagnation learning, resulting in enhanced model accuracy. Comparative analyses with variational quantum classifiers from the technology’s state-of-the-art reveal a substantial improvement in training efficiency and precision. Furthermore, we conduct tests on a challenging dataset class, traditionally problematic for conventional kernel machines, demonstrating a potential alternative path for achieving quantum advantage in supervised learning for the NISQ era. Exposure to nanoparticles (NPs) is frequently associated with adverse cardiovascular effects. In contrast, NPs in nanomedicine hold great promise for precise lung‐specific drug delivery, especially considering the extensive pulmonary capillary network that facilitates interactions with bloodstream‐suspended particles. Therefore, exact knowledge about effects of engineered NPs within the pulmonary microcirculation are instrumental for future application of this technology in patients. To unravel the real‐time dynamics of intravenously delivered NPs and their effects in the pulmonary microvasculature, we employed intravital microscopy of the mouse lung. Only PEG‐amine‐QDs, but not carboxyl‐QDs triggered rapid neutrophil recruitment in microvessels and their subsequent recruitment to the alveolar space and was linked to cellular degranulation, TNF‐α, and DAMP release into the circulation, particularly eATP. Stimulation of the ATP‐gated receptor P2X7R induced expression of E‐selectin on microvascular endothelium thereby mediating the neutrophilic immune response. Leukocyte integrins LFA‐1 and MAC‐1 facilitated adhesion and decelerated neutrophil crawling on the vascular surface. In summary, this study unravels the complex cascade of neutrophil recruitment during NP‐induced sterile inflammation. Thereby we demonstrate novel adverse effects for NPs in the pulmonary microcirculation and provide critical insights for optimizing NP‐based drug delivery and therapeutic intervention strategies, to ensure their efficacy and safety in clinical applications. Drought and altered nutrient dynamics are aggravated by anthropic actions, especially in semiarid environments, such as Brazilian Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (Caatinga). However, it is not known how nutrient levels affect growth and biochemical responses in plants present in the Caatinga under drought. The aim of this study was to evaluate morphological and biochemical responses in Pavonia varians (native species with medicinal potential) and Megathyrsus maximus (invasive exotic species used in cattle feeding) present in the Caatinga with the application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) under water restriction and rehydration. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with seedlings collected from the Catimbau National Park (Pernambuco, Brazil) in a factorial design with NPK application and water regimes. Plants were harvested after water restriction and after rehydration. NPK application improved the responses of P. varians to water restriction, increasing the leaf dry weight, total N, total K, and proline content. Additionally, MDA and H2O2 levels decreased in P. varians under water restriction with NPK application. In contrast, M. maximus without NPK application under water restriction increased SOD and CAT enzyme activities and decreased MDA levels. After rehydration, both species exhibited growth recovery. NPK application in P. varians increased the total K and total soluble carbohydrate contents, while M. maximus increased the number of leaves and root dry weight. Species have different mechanisms for combating drought stress, especially non-enzymatically through proline. Nutritional treatment with pre-stress NPK was an effective alternative against oxidative damage, especially for the native species P. varians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diapause is a vital survival strategy for insects, enabling them to conserve energy and endure adverse conditions. Understanding how diapause affects insect phenology and population dynamics is crucial for the effective management of insect pests. Predictive pest phenological models can be invaluable tools for providing essential information to support management strategies. This study presents a modelling framework to incorporate diapause into phenological models when biological information on variables regulating and functions describing diapause induction and termination are lacking or limited. In our framework, insect phenology is divided into a set of phases characterized by specific events (diapause induction and termination) and processes (development of diapausing and post‐diapausing biological stages). The phenology is simulated by a stage‐structured model based on the Kolmogorov equation, and the temperature‐dependent development rate functions are described by the Brière functional form. Our modelling framework was tested on a case study involving the prediction of the phenology of the codling moth, (Cydia pomonella L. 1758). Model calibration and validation were performed using four time‐series adult trap catch data collected in the Emilia Romagna Region from 2021 to 2023. The calibration procedure allowed obtaining realistic parameters related to the temperature threshold triggering diapause termination and the development rate function of post‐diapausing larvae and pupae. Model validation proved successful in simulating both the initial emergence and the overall phenological patterns of adults across the three observed generations. The methodological framework proposed here aims to facilitate the introduction of diapause in phenological models improving also their predictive abilities. The model may serve as an accurate and knowledge‐based tool for planning and implementing pest monitoring and control actions based on the realistic predictions provided by the model on the phenological status of the pest. The biopharmaceutical industry has specificities related to the optimization of its processes, the effectiveness of the maintenance of the productive park in the face of regulatory requirements. and current concepts of modern industry. Current research on the subject points to investments in the health area using the current tools and concepts of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) with the objective of a more assertive production, reduction of maintenance costs, reduction of operating risks, and minimization of equipment idle time. In this context, this study aims to characterize the current knowledge about the challenges of the biopharmaceutical industry in the application of prescriptive maintenance, which derives from predictive maintenance, in the context of I4.0. To achieve this, a systematic review of the literature was carried out in the scientific knowledge bases IEEE Xplore, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar, considering works such as Reviews, Article Research, and Conference Abstracts published between 2018 and 2023. The results obtained revealed that prescriptive maintenance offers opportunities for improvement in the production process, such as cost reduction and greater proximity to all actors in the areas of production, maintenance, quality, and management. The limitations presented in the literature include a reduced number of models, the lack of a clearer understanding of its construction, lack of applications directly linked to the biopharmaceutical industry, and lack of measurement of costs and implementation time of these models. There are significant advances in this area including the implementation of more elaborate algorithms used in artificial intelligence neural networks, the advancement of the use of decision support systems as well as the collection of data in a more structured and intelligent way. It is concluded that for the adoption of prescriptive maintenance in the pharmaceutical industry, issues such as the definition of data entry and analysis methods, interoperability between "shop floor" and corporate systems, as well as the integration of technologies existing in the world, must be considered for I4.0. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ozonation in controlling Pseudomonas spp. biofilm in the food industry, and present possible parameters influencing this process. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The search was conducted in the PubMed, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases. Eleven articles published between 1993 and 2023 were included in the study, indicating that the topic has been under investigation for several decades, gaining more prominence in recent years. Studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial effect of ozone under different experimental conditions, indicating that it is an effective strategy. Furthermore, they suggest that, in addition to ozone concentration and exposure time, other parameters such as the type of materials used in processing plants, hydrodynamic conditions, water temperature, and knowledge of commonly found microorganisms contribute to the effectiveness of the process aimed at reducing microbial counts. In conclusion, the available evidence suggests that ozonation in controlling Pseudomonas spp. can be considered a promising antimicrobial strategy. Herein, the development of a niobium-based metal–organic framework (Nb-MOF) designed to serve as a catalytic support for the production of hydrogen (H2) from sodium borohydride (NaBH4) is reported. The Nb-MOF was synthesized via a solvothermal method using niobium ammoniacal oxalate (AmOxaNb) as the metal source and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) as the ligand. The resulting MOF was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The characterization study confirmed the successful synthesis of Nb-MOF. The catalytic activity was optimized by examining five key factors: (i) platinum (Pt) and cobalt (Co) bimetallic compositions (ranging from 1:0 to 0:1 mmol), (ii) NaBH4 concentration (0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 mol L−1), (iii) the Nb-MOF/Pt–Co catalyst dose (0.05, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.40 mmol), (iv) sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mol L−1), and (v) system temperature (293.15, 298.15, 303.15, 313.15, and 323.15 K). The optimal catalyst was identified as Nb-MOF supporting a Pt-Co bimetallic composition in a 0.4:0.6 mmol ratio, achieving a hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of 1473 mL min−1 gcat−1 and an activation energy of 19.2 kJ mol−1. Furthermore, this catalyst maintained its efficiency over 20 cycles, demonstrating significant potential as a sustainable solution for H2 evolution from NaBH4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soybeans, a vital source of protein for animal feed and an essential industrial raw material, are the most traded agricultural commodity worldwide. Accurate price forecasting is crucial for maintaining a resilient global food supply chain and has significant implications for agricultural economics and policymaking. This review examines over 100 soybean price forecast models published in the last decade, evaluating them based on the specific markets they target—futures or spot—while highlighting how differences between these markets influence critical model design decisions. The models are also classified into AI-powered and traditional categories, with an initial aim to conduct a statistical analysis comparing the performance of these two groups. This process unveiled a fundamental gap in best practices, particularly regarding the use of common benchmarks and standardised performance metrics, which limits the ability to make meaningful cross-study comparisons. Finally, this study underscores another important research gap: the lack of models forecasting soybean futures prices in Brazil, the world's largest producer and exporter. Fasciolosis is a parasitosis of great importance for livestock, as well as for public health, as it is considered by the WHO as a neglected disease. Disease control is complex and reinfections make the use of therapeutic products an unsustainable method from an economic, environmental and health point of view. The aim of this study was to evaluate a new vaccine formulation for dairy cattle, containing soluble Fasciola hepatica antigens associated with Montanide 763 AVG and saponin adjuvants (FhSAMS). The vaccine was tested with two protocols, a single dose and a booster dose 6 months after the first dose. The FhSAMS vaccine proved to be safe, with no side effects. Furthermore, it was able to generate a more robust humoral immune response when a six‐month booster dose was used, in addition to stimulating greater production of IFN‐ʏ, indicating a Th1 profile immune stimulus. Eosinophil recruitment is a pathological hallmark of many allergic and helminthic diseases. Here, we investigated chemokine receptor CCR3-induced eosinophil recruitment in sialyltransferase St3gal4-/- mice. We found a marked decrease in eosinophil extravasation into CCL11-stimulated cremaster muscles and into the inflamed peritoneal cavity of St3gal4-/- mice. Ex vivo flow chamber assays uncovered reduced adhesion of St3gal4-/- compared to wild type eosinophils. Using flow cytometry, we show reduced binding of CCL11 to St3gal4-/- eosinophils. Further, we noted reduced binding of CCL11 to its chemokine receptor CCR3 isolated from St3gal4-/- eosinophils. This was accompanied by almost absent CCR3 internalization of CCL11-stimulated St3gal4-/- eosinophils. Applying an ovalbumin-induced allergic airway disease model, we found a dramatic reduction in eosinophil numbers in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid following intratracheal challenge with ovalbumin in St3gal4-deficient mice. Finally, we also investigated tissue-resident eosinophils under homeostatic conditions and found reduced resident eosinophil numbers in the thymus and adipose tissue in the absence of ST3Gal-IV. Taken together, our results demonstrate an important role of ST3Gal-IV in CCR3-induced eosinophil recruitment in vivo rendering this enzyme an attractive target in reducing unwanted eosinophil infiltration in various disorders including allergic diseases. Background: Anti-GBM disease is a rare vasculitis mediated by pathogenic antibodies against collagen IV. Anti-GBM disease presents with rapid progressive glomerulonephritis and leads to kidney failure if untreated. KDIGO recommends plasma exchanges (PEX) for antibody elimination and steroids plus cyclophosphamide (CTX) to suppress antibody production. CTX is associated with severe side effects including gonadal toxicity. Rituximab (RTX) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) might be a less toxic but equally efficient alternative to CTX. Studies in pediatric anti-GBM disease patients receiving RTX and MMF instead of CTX are lacking. Methods: A retrospective survey in 8 tertiary German centers was performed. The clinical data of patients diagnosed between 2014 and 2022 were collected and analyzed. Results: Five adolescent patients treated with PEX and RTX and/or MMF due to anti-GBM disease were analyzed. All patients had anti-GBM antibodies, hematuria, glomerular proteinuria, and pulmonary hemorrhage. eGFR was 124 ml/min/1.73 m2 (range 47–162), and all patients were non-dialysis-dependent but with relevant histological kidney affection (mean crescents on kidney biopsy 77%). Antibody clearance was achieved after 13 PEX cycles (range 6–31). Four out of 5 patients received methylprednisolone pulses. All patients received oral prednisolone and MMF, and four patients received a median of 4 RTX doses (range 2–4). After a mean follow-up of 27 months, 4/5 patients had conserved or improved kidney function, while one patient (20%) developed kidney failure. Conclusions: In this small series of pediatric non-dialysis-dependent anti-GBM disease patients, first-line treatment with RTX and MMF showed a favorable kidney outcome in 4/5 cases and had an acceptable side effect profile. The spectrum of enzymes required for complete lignocellulosic waste hydrolysis is too diverse to be secreted by a single organism. An alternative is to employ fungal co-cultures to obtain more diverse and complete enzymatic cocktails without the need to mix enzymes during downstream processing. This study evaluated the co-cultivation of Aspergillus brasiliensis and Trichoderma reesei RUT-C30 in different conditions using sugarcane bagasse as the carbon source. The resulting enzymatic cocktails were characterized according to the impact of strain inoculation time on enzymatic activities and proteome composition. Data revealed that the profile of each enzymatic extract was highly dependent on the order in which the participating fungi were inoculated. Some of the co-cultures exhibited higher enzyme activities compared to their respective monocultures for enzymes such as CMCase, pectinase, β-glucosidase, and β-xylosidase. Analysis of the T. reesei RUT-C30 and A. brasiliensis co-culture secretome resulted in the identification of 167 proteins, with 78 from T. reesei and 89 from A. brasiliensis. In agreement with the enzymatic results, proteome analysis also revealed that the timing of inoculation greatly influences the overall secretome, with a predominance of T. reesei RUT-C30 proteins when first inoculated or in simultaneous inoculation. The high demand for generation and development in wind electrical power competitiveness has gained significant popularity in wind energy and speed forecasting models. It is also an essential method for planning the wind power plant system. Several models were created in the past to forest the speed and energy of the Wind. However, results have very low prediction accuracy due to their nonlinear and irregular characteristics. Therefore, a novel Modular Red Deer Neural System (MRDNS) was developed in this research to forecast wind speed and energy effectively. Primarily, the system accepted the data from the wind turbine SCADA database and preprocessed it to remove the training flaws. Further, the relevant features are extracted. The complexity of the prediction process was reduced by processing the relevant features. By analysing these features, the wind speed and energy were predicted in accordance with the fitness function of the MRDNS. The model obtained higher prediction accuracy. The recommended strategy was checked in the Python platform and the robustness metrics including RMSE, MSE, and precision were computed. The model scored 99.99% prediction accuracy; also gained 0.0017 MSE value, 0.0422 RMSE value for wind power forecasting and 0.0003 MSE, 0.0174 RMSE for wind speed forecasting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest planning involves estimating the biomass of species present in the area. Two fundamental parameters are diameter and height through which it is possible to indirectly estimate of biomass present. Digitalisation of forestry operations, such as forest planning, is crucial and should be affordable and easy-to-use digital applications and open-source devices. A digital progressive web application (PWA) was designed to record measurements. The app was connected via bluetoot to an open-source IoT digital forestry caliper prototyped by modifying a commercial tree caliper. An economic analysis was carried out considering all costs necessary for the development and operation of the app on smartphones and the preparation of electronic means for creation of the digital caliper. A comparison was made between costs of detecting tree diameters through application of the technology developed compared to costs calculated by applying the use of a dendrometric caliper (three technological levels were considered: L1, L2 and L3). The PWA allowed for easy data entry and viewing, maps and tree densities. The open-source digital caliper showed accuracy and precision comparable with similar commercial devices (1.5% ± 0.9% and 0.0% ± 0.9%, respectively). Total time per operator was lower using the digital caliper. From an economic perspective, application of the digital technology was more sustainable than the traditional system. Use of the digital caliper in combination with the web application optimizes detection time of a single tree, and therefore decreases overall cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In adult horses, the development and evaluation of enteral electrolyte solutions containing sodium acetate for correcting hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis are still lacking, although these electrolyte and acid-base imbalances are commonly observed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the alkalinizing effect of two enteral electrolyte solutions containing different concentrations of acetate, administered via nasogastric tube in continuous flow, in adult horses with experimental hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. Methods: Six mares aged between 3 and 10 years were used in a 6×2 crossover design, with each animal receiving both treatments. The horses were subjected to a protocol to induce hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. They then received one of two treatments: HighAcetate (81.4 mmol/L) and LowAcetate (22.7 mmol/L) at an infusion rate of 15 mL/kg/h for 12 h. Plasma, serum, and urinary biochemical assessments; hematocrit; urinary volume, pH, and specific gravity; and blood gas analysis were measured at the following time points: T-12 h (beginning of the 12-h fast), T0h (end of fasting and beginning of the acidosis induction phase), every 2 h during the hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis induction phase (Ti2h and Ti4h), every 2 h during the 12-h enteral hydration phase (Tt2h, Tt4h, Tt6h, Tt8h, Tt10h, and Tt12h), with one sample taken at T24h (24 h after the start of acidosis induction) and another at T36h (36 h after the start of acidosis induction). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and analysis of variance based on a factorial design of repeated measures, with Tukey's post-hoc test or the Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn's post-hoc test for non-parametric tests. Results: At the end of the induction phase, the animals developed moderate to severe hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. The HighAcetate solution effectively corrected electrolyte and acid-base imbalances before the end of the treatment phase (Tt12h), while the LowAcetate solution was not effective in correcting those changes. Conclusion: The HighAcetate (81.4 mmol/L) solution is deemed an effective and safe alternative for the treatment of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis in horses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We developed a reaction–diffusion model to describe the spatio-temporal dynamics of the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman), based on adult abundance data collected by the Regional Phytosanitary Service during the monitoring activities in the infested area in Lombardy (northern Italy), from 2015 to 2021. The model simulated the abundance of the pest, with a discrete time step of one year along linear trajectories departing from an initial point of establishment. The model allowed the determination of the rate of expansion (i.e. the speed at which the leading edge of a population wave moves over time) of the pest along 13 different trajectories, ranging from 4.5 to 13.8 km/y, with a mean value of 8.2 km/y. Finally, we developed a land suitability index that summarises the effect of land use on the trajectory-specific rate of expansion of P. japonica. Specifically, the model revealed an increase in the rate of expansion of 260 m per year for each additional percentage point in the land suitability index. The model presented and the knowledge acquired in this work represent an important step forward in the comprehension of P. japonica population dynamics, and they represent important elements for the development of a decision support tool for pest risk managers to design and implement scientifically driven management actions. Background: Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) in athletic horses is characterized by the presence of blood from the lungs in the tracheobronchial tree after intense exercise. Despite the high prevalence of EIPH in horses, the primary aetiology remains unknown. Variants in the genes encoding CD39 and CD39L1 (ENTPD1 and ENTPD2, respectively) were previously reported as potential genetic causes involved in EIPH pathogenesis. However, the role of these variants in haemostatic functions is unknown. Results: To investigate the association between EIPH and missense variants in the ENTPD1 (rs1152296272, rs68621348, and rs68621347) and ENTPD2 genes (rs782872967), 76 Thoroughbred horses diagnosed with EIPH and 56 without clinical signs of EIPH (control group) by trachea-bronchial endoscopy were genotyped. The rs1152296272 and rs68621347 variants were linked, which explained why the same results were found in all horses. Approximately 96% and 95% of the EIPH and control horses, respectively, carried at least one nonreference allele for these variants. In contrast, 100% of the control horses and 96% of the EIPH horses were homozygous for the reference allele for the rs68621348 variant. In the EIPH group, 1.5% of the horses were homozygotes and 24% were heterozygous for the nonreference allele of the rs782872967 variant. In the control group, the nonreference allele of this variant was observed only in heterozygotes (16%). There were no significant differences between groups for any of the variants. Conclusions: The variants previously described in the genes encoding the CD39 and CD39L1 enzymes were highly present in the studied population. However, no association was found between the occurrence of EIPH and the presence of these variants in Thoroughbred horses in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This manuscript presents a systematic review of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. A meta-analysis was made to compare the number of treated/operated HNC patients in the pre-COVID-19 era versus the COVID-19 era. This investigation was based on previous reports showing a delay in the diagnosis and treatment of new cases of cancer during the pandemic. Worsening in cancer prognosis would be expected as a result of the delayed treatments. Method and materials: An electronic search was conducted using the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and The Cochrane Library databases. Relevant articles were selected based on specific inclusion criteria. Results: A total of 8,942 HNC patients were included. A higher prevalence in male (1,873) in comparison to female (1,695) was observed considering 3,568 patients. Regarding staging, the majority of cases were stage III to IV. The treatment type more frequently described was surgery. Positive diagnosis for COVID-19 in the pre-oncologic treatment was reported for 242 patients, and for post-oncologic treatment in 119 patients. Mortality by COVID-19 was reported for 27 HNC patients. The meta- analysis revealed a significantly smaller number of surgeries/ oncologic treatments of HNC patients performed (2,666) in the COVID-19 era when compared to the pre-COVID-19 era (3,163) (Mantel--Haenszel odds ratio = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.65 to 1.00, P = .05). Conclusion: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HNC patients occurred mainly in the number of surgeries/ oncologic treatments, showing a significantly smaller number of surgeries/oncologic treatments performed in the COVID-19 era rather than the pre-COVID-19 era. Innate immune responses are linked to key metabolic pathways, yet the proximal signaling events that connect these systems remain poorly understood. Here we show that phosphofructokinase 1, liver type (PFKL), a rate-limiting enzyme of glycolysis, is phosphorylated at Ser775 in macrophages following several innate stimuli. This phosphorylation increases the catalytic activity of PFKL, as shown by biochemical assays and glycolysis monitoring in cells expressing phosphorylation-defective PFKL variants. Using a genetic mouse model in which PFKL Ser775 phosphorylation cannot take place, we observe that upon activation, glycolysis in macrophages is lower than in the same cell population of wild-type animals. Consistent with their higher glycolytic activity, wild-type cells have higher levels of HIF1α and IL-1β than PfklS775A/S775A after LPS treatment. In an in vivo inflammation model, PfklS775A/S775A mice show reduced levels of MCP-1 and IL-1β. Our study thus identifies a molecular link between innate immune activation and early induction of glycolysis. Pro-inflammatory signals trigger innate immune pathways with consequential metabolic remodeling. A critical element of a counselor's work is their ability to make sound decisions when facing ethical and legal issues. Yet, limited measures exist to understand actions/processes used to inform ethical and legal decision-making in counseling. We developed and tested the Frequency of Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling Scale (FELICS), a measure to capture data on the rate counselors face ethical and legal issues. A sample of 369 counselors completed the FELICS. Findings from an exploratory factor analysis provided initial evidence for the validity and reliability of the measure. Summary Protein Interaction Explorer (PIE) is a new web-based tool integrated to our database iPPI-DB, specifically crafted to support structure-based drug discovery initiatives focused on protein–protein interactions (PPIs). Drawing upon extensive structural data encompassing thousands of heterodimer complexes, including those with successful ligands, PIE provides a comprehensive suite of tools dedicated to aid decision-making in PPI drug discovery. PIE enables researchers/bioinformaticians to identify and characterize crucial factors such as the presence of binding pockets or functional binding sites at the interface, predicting hot spots, and foreseeing similar protein-embedded pockets for potential repurposing efforts. Biomass, due to its neutrality in terms of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere during its life cycle, is considered an interesting renewable source for energy production as an alternative to the use of more polluting fossil fuels. Among the different wood fuels, pellets are convenient for use in dedicated stoves, and pellet heating systems have a high energy efficiency. The aim of this work was to estimate the economic and global warming potential (GWP100a) generated along the thermal energy supply chain of wood pellets, starting from the production of raw biomass from dedicated poplar cultivations and ending with the use of pellets in stoves by the end-user to produce thermal energy and ash. The Eco-Efficiency Indicator (EEI) was used to link the economic and environmental performance for eight proposed scenarios, obtained by combining different levels of mechanisation for poplar harvesting and wood biomass management before arrival at the pellet plant. For the thermal energy produced by the poplar wood pellet, the GWP100a ranged from 1.5 × 10−2 to 2.1 × 10−2 kg CO2−eq MJ−1 for three-year-old plantations and from 1.9 × 10−2 to 2.4 × 10−2 kg CO2−eq MJ−1, for six-year-old plantations. In terms of eco-efficiency of the baseline scenario (EEIb), the most favourable scenarios remain those linked to the use of biomass from three-year-old poplar plantations, with EEIb values ranging from 0.31 to 0.60 € kgCO2−eq−1, compared to from 0.29 to 0.36 € kgCO2−eq−1 for pellets obtained from biomass produced from six-year-old poplar plantations. In terms of the Global Eco-Efficiency Indicator (EEIg), which also takes into account the positive effect on the reduction of greenhouse gases due to the storage of carbon in the soil by the plantations and the reduction of emissions from avoided fossil fuels, the most favourable scenarios remain those linked to the use of biomass from three-year-old poplar plantations, with EEIg values that vary in the range of 0.60 ÷ 1.04 € kgCO2−eq−1, compared to 0.55 ÷ 0.62 € kg CO2−eq−1 for thermal energy obtained using biomass from six-year-old poplar plantations. Fasciolosis is a worldwide distribution zoonosis that causes great damage in ruminant breeding and has the aquatic mollusc Pseudosuccinea columella as an intermediate host. Synthetic molluscicides are the most used for control; however, they are harmful to fauna and flora. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of essential oils from Thymus vulgaris, Origanum vulgare, and terpene carvacrol, on adult molluscs and eggs of P. columella. Analysis of EO volatile components was carried out on a gas chromatograph equipment coupled with mass spectrometry selective detector. The studied components were diluted in concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ppm, and it was observed that O. vulgare at concentrations of 60, 80 and 100 ppm, carvacrol at the concentrations of 80 and 100 ppm, and T. vulgaris at a concentration of 80 ppm led to 100% mortality of molluscs. This study aims to analyze leisure involvement and voluntary simplicity as antecedents of leisure satisfaction and the relationship with experiential consumption. To this end, we conducted a survey with 815 Brazilian runners and cyclists, and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Age, education, and income were also investigated as moderators in the relationship between leisure involvement and leisure satisfaction. The main results showed that leisure involvement positively influenced leisure satisfaction and voluntary simplicity of its practitioners. Voluntary simplicity positively influenced leisure satisfaction and experiential consumption. The moderation test showed that the relationship between leisure involvement and leisure satisfaction is stronger for higher age, education, and income. We concluded that leisure involvement could be a path to a simple living choice, one source for a more sustainable world. Exercise intolerance and dyspnoea are clinical symptoms in both heart failure (HF) reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which are suggested to be associated with musculoskeletal dysfunction. We tested the hypothesis that HFrEF + COPD patients would present lower muscle strength and greater fatigue compared to compared to the COPD group. We included 25 patients with HFrEF + COPD (100% male, age 67.8 ± 6.9) and 25 patients with COPD alone (100% male, age 66.1 ± 9.1). In both groups, COPD severity was determined as moderate-to-severe according to the GOLD classification (FEV1/FVC < 0.7 and predicted post-bronchodilator FEV1 between 30%-80%). Knee flexor–extensor muscle performance (torque, work, power and fatigue) were measured by isokinetic dynamometry in age and sex-matched patients with HFrEF + COPD and COPD alone; Functional capacity was assessed by the cardiopulmonary exercise test, the 6-min walk test (6MWT) and the four-minute step test. The COPD group exhibited reduced lung function compared to the HFrEF + COPD group, as evidenced by lower FEV1/FVC (58.0 ± 4.0 vs. 65.5 ± 13.9; p < 0.0001, respectively) and FEV1 (51.3 ± 17.0 vs. 62.5 ± 17.4; p = 0.026, respectively) values. Regarding musculoskeletal function, the HFrEF + COPD group showed a knee flexor muscles impairment, however this fact was not observed in the knee extensors muscles. Power peak of the knee flexor corrected by muscle mass was significantly correlated with the 6MWT (r = 0.40; p < 0.05), number of steps (r = 0.30; p < 0.05) and work ratepeak (r = 0.40; p < 0.05) in the HFrEF + COPD and COPD groups. Wood fuel from the agroforestry sector is one of the main strategies cited by the EU for reducing energetic dependance on foreign markets. Its sustainability, both economic and environmental, can be improved through the optimization of harvesting and chipping operations. This study was focused on the dynamic and energetic balance of the chipping phase carried out by a chipper operated by the power-take-off (PTO) of a medium-power tractor. Both machines were equipped with sensors for real-time monitoring of fuel consumption, PTO torque and speed, trunk diameter and working time during the comminution of 61 poplar trees grown in a medium rotation coppice system. The data analysis was carried out on the entire dataset (about 29,000 records) without considering their belonging to different trees. By means of proper data ordinations, it has been possible to define all the intervals in which the chipping stopped (e.g., between two trees) and to exclude them from the intervals of actual chipping. This has allowed forcomputation of operative and actual working time, as well as of the basic power required to operate the chipper and the power for actual chipping. Subsequently, the parameter values observed during actual chipping were related to the cutting diameters measured at the same instant. Subsequently, the dataset was divided according to seven diameter classes, and, for each class, the descriptive statistical indices of working time, work productivity, CO2 emissions, energy requirement and fuel consumption were calculated. Eventually, the correlation between the variations in trunk diameter and other parameters was verified both on the whole dataset and based on the class average values. The analysis made it possible to identify the conditions of greatest efficiency for the chipper. More generally, the method could help to increase the accuracy of measurements aimed at characterizing the performance of chippers from the point of view of dynamic energy requirements as well as in relation to different wood species. The reconfiguration of electrical distribution systems has been addressed in numerous scientific studies. Thus, several techniques and models are considered, especially to reduce electrical losses and improve the voltage profile. However, it is clear that even with the increase in research, which has been accentuated since the last decade, the locational pricing and the transmission costs allocation is little explored. In this regard, the proposed method is a distribution system reconfiguration (DSR) optimization problem focused on minimizing the use of the transmission system. In order to validate the meta‐heuristic employed for the DSR, the IEEE 33 and 69 node test systems are used as a proof of concept. In addition, case studies with four substations, three different transmission cost allocation techniques, and transmission system capacity scenarios are analyzed. Numerical results showed an important transmission expansion deferral with consequent decrease in overall costs compared to the classic DSR. The transmission network use of system (TNUoS) charges can play a crucial role in reducing the total cost of the electrical system, promoting distributors to change their feeder patterns so that a larger share of loads access substations with lower charges. Changes in soil resulting from agricultural practices can lead to acidification and the accumulation of toxic elements, such as Al3+. In acidic soils, aluminium solubility decreases nutrient availability, causing biochemical and morphophysiological changes that impede plant growth. This study aimed to determine how native species respond to the effects of Al3+ and its impact on their persistence in the environment. Soil samples were collected in areas with and without Al3+ in a natural regeneration zone. Leaves of three herbaceous species prevalent in the rainy season underwent biochemical analysis. The results revealed that Al3+ influenced enzymatic activity in Ayenia erecta, reducing superoxide dismutase and increasing ascorbate peroxidase and catalase. Pavonia varians exhibited an accumulation of H2O2 and a reduction in ascorbate peroxidase, while Sida galheirensis demonstrated an accumulation of sucrose and a reduction in proline levels in areas affected by Al3+, without changes in enzymatic activity or the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. The presence of 0.31 cmolc/dm³ of Al3+ was insufficient to induce lipid peroxidation in the studied species. Overall, the species responded differently to aluminium, impacting oxidative stress and potentially influencing their survival in the environment. Background/Aim: Childhood dental trauma poses a prevalent concern, and the limited knowledge of lay caregivers toward the needed immediate actions can adversely affect a child's well‐being. This study aimed to create and validate an educational comic book for lay individuals, designed to guide immediate actions in dental trauma cases, and assess its effects toward enhancing reader knowledge. Methodology: The four‐stage study involved: (1) Literature review and script development; (2) Version 1 of the comic book creation (including illustrations, layout, and design) and Flesch Readability Index (FI) calculation; (3) Version 1 validation by expert judges, assessed by the Content Validity Index (CVI); (4) Version 1 refinement based on the judges' feedback, recalculation of FI, and a pilot test (CVI) involving lay individuals who validated the final material (Version 2). The validation process involved 67 participants, including 13 specialist judges and 54 elementary school teachers. Results: The CVI for Version 1 was calculated at 0.89 (89%), indicating a favorable level of agreement on the evaluated criteria. The FI was determined as 91.1%, indicating a high level of readability. The FI for Version 2 was 92.1% (indicating a very easy level of comprehension). The CVI calculated for the target audience after the pilot test was 0.99 (99%), denoting a substantial agreement among the participants. In assessing the level of knowledge, a significant increase was observed in the rate of correct answers after the comic book was read by lay individuals (p < 0.05), inasmuch as the percentage rose from 50.5% before to 81.2% after reading it. Conclusion: The educational comic book proved valid in terms of readability, appearance, and content. Furthermore, it had a positive impact on gaining the knowledge needed to take the appropriate actions, thus making it a valuable tool for guiding the lay population in cases of dental trauma. Glucuronidation is a detoxification process to eliminate endo- and xeno-biotics and neurotransmitters from the host circulation. Glucuronosyltransferase binds these compounds to glucuronic acid (GlcA), deactivating them and allowing their elimination through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. However, the microbiota produces β-glucuronidases that release GlcA and reactivate these compounds. Enteric pathogens such as enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) and Citrobacter rodentium sense and utilize galacturonic acid (GalA), an isomer of GlcA, to outcompete the microbiota promoting gut colonization. However, the role of GlcA in pathogen colonization has not been explored. Here, we show that treatment of mice with a microbial β-glucuronidase inhibitor (GUSi) decreased C. rodentiums colonization of the GI tract, without modulating bacterial virulence or host inflammation. Metagenomic studies indicated that GUSi did not change the composition of the intestinal microbiota in these animals. GlcA confers an advantage for pathogen expansion through its utilization as a carbon source. Congruently mutants unable to catabolize GlcA depict lower GI colonization compared to wild type and are not sensitive to GUSi. Germfree mice colonized with a commensal E. coli deficient for β-glucuronidase production led to a decrease of C. rodentium tissue colonization, compared to animals monocolonized with an E. coli proficient for production of this enzyme. GlcA is not sensed as a signal and doesn't activate virulence expression but is used as a metabolite. Because pathogens can use GlcA to promote their colonization, inhibitors of microbial β-glucuronidases could be a unique therapeutic against enteric infections without disturbing the host or microbiota physiology. Urinary tract obstruction during renal development leads to inflammation, leukocyte infiltration, tubular cell death, and interstitial fibrosis. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine, produced mainly by monocytes/macrophages and regulatory T-cells. IL-10 inhibits innate and adaptive immune responses. IL-10 has a protective role in the adult model of obstructive uropathy. However, its role in neonatal obstructive uropathy is still unclear which led us to study the role of IL-10 in neonatal mice with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). UUO serves as a model for congenital obstructive nephropathies, a leading cause of kidney failure in children. Newborn Il-10−/− and C57BL/6 wildtype-mice (WT) were subjected to complete UUO or sham-operation on the 2nd day of life. Neonatal kidneys were harvested at day 3, 7, and 14 of life and analyzed for different leukocyte subpopulations by FACS, for cytokines and chemokines by Luminex assay and ELISA, and for inflammation, programmed cell death, and fibrosis by immunohistochemistry and western blot. Compared to WT mice, Il-10−/− mice showed reduced infiltration of neutrophils, CD11bhi cells, conventional type 1 dendritic cells, and T-cells following UUO. Il-10−/− mice with UUO also showed a reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine release compared to WT with UUO, mainly of IP-10, IL-1α, MIP-2α and IL-17A. In addition, Il-10−/− mice showed less necroptosis after UUO while the rate of apoptosis was not different. Finally, α-SMA and collagen abundance as readout for fibrosis were similar in Il-10−/− and WT with UUO. Surprisingly and in contrast to adult Il-10−/− mice undergoing UUO, neonatal Il-10−/− mice with UUO showed a reduced inflammatory response compared to respective WT control mice with UUO. Notably, long term changes such as renal fibrosis were not different between neonatal Il-10−/− and neonatal WT mice with UUO suggesting that IL-10 signaling is different in neonates and adults with UUO. Aims Cyclophilin A (CyPA) induces leucocyte recruitment and platelet activation upon release into the extracellular space. Extracellular CyPA therefore plays a critical role in immuno-inflammatory responses in tissue injury and thrombosis upon platelet activation. To date, CD147 (EMMPRIN) has been described as the primary receptor mediating extracellular effects of CyPA in platelets and leucocytes. The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) shares inflammatory and prothrombotic properties and has also been found to have similar ligands as CD147. In this study, we investigated the role of RAGE as a previously unknown interaction partner for CyPA. Methods and results Confocal imaging, proximity ligation, co-immunoprecipitation, and atomic force microscopy were performed and demonstrated an interaction of CyPA with RAGE on the cell surface. Static and dynamic cell adhesion and chemotaxis assays towards extracellular CyPA using human leucocytes and leucocytes from RAGE-deficient Ager −/− mice were conducted. Inhibition of RAGE abrogated CyPA-induced effects on leucocyte adhesion and chemotaxis in vitro. Accordingly, Ager −/− mice showed reduced leucocyte recruitment and endothelial adhesion towards CyPA in vivo. In wild-type mice, we observed a downregulation of RAGE on leucocytes when endogenous extracellular CyPA was reduced. We furthermore evaluated the role of RAGE for platelet activation and thrombus formation upon CyPA stimulation. CyPA-induced activation of platelets was found to be dependent on RAGE, as inhibition of RAGE, as well as platelets from Ager −/− mice showed a diminished activation and thrombus formation upon CyPA stimulation. CyPA-induced signalling through RAGE was found to involve central signalling pathways including the adaptor protein MyD88, intracellular Ca2+ signalling, and NF-κB activation. Conclusion We propose RAGE as a hitherto unknown receptor for CyPA mediating leucocyte as well as platelet activation. Wind energy has achieved a leading position among renewable energies. The global installed capacity in 2022 was 906 GW of power, with a growth of 8.4% compared to the same period in the previous year. The forecast is that the barrier of 1,000,000 MW of installed wind capacity in the world will be exceeded in July 2023, according to data from the World Association of Wind Energy. In order to support the expected growth in the wind sector, maintenance strategies for wind turbines must provide the reliability and availability necessary to achieve these goals. The usual maintenance procedures may present difficulties in keeping up with the expansion of this energy source. The objective of this work was to carry out a systematic review of the literature focused on research on the predictive and prescriptive maintenance of wind turbines based on the implementation of data-oriented models with the use of artificial intelligence tools.
