Summary: This report describes the likely development and growth of bilateral granulosa cell tumours (GCTs) in a Warmblood pony mare, during the first trimester of pregnancy after artificial insemination. The GCTs were initially suspected to be ovarian haematomas and were managed conservatively. However, they ultimately led to life‐threatening haemoperitoneum (HP) and were later diagnosed as GCTs with histopathology. The case was successfully managed with emergency standing laparoscopic‐assisted bilateral ovariectomy after haemodynamic supportive therapy. The mare made a full recovery and delivered a live filly foal at term. GCTs can be a rare cause of life‐threatening HP and can be successfully managed with haemodynamic support and standing laparoscopic‐assisted removal. Bilateral ovariectomy in a pregnant mare after 70 days of gestation can result in successful delivery of a live foal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Three horses that were presented for computed tomography (CT) examination of the head and cranial cervical spine in which marked mineralisation of the longitudinal odontoid ligament of the dens was identified on CT examination are described. There are currently no reports of mineralisation of the longitudinal odontoid ligament in horses in the literature. Although the significance of this finding to the presenting clinical problems in the cases described remains speculative, an association between mineralisation of the longitudinal odontoid ligament and compatible clinical signs merits further investigation. A 9-year-old Welsh Section D gelding was referred to an equine hospital for evaluation and computed tomographic (CT) imaging of a left mandibular swelling. An expansile mass, found within the left mandible at the level of the caudal 2 cheek teeth, was surgically debulked and histology of the lesion identified it as an ameloblastic carcinoma. Radiotherapy using 4 fractions of 800 cGy, 7 days apart, was subsequently undertaken. The pony made excellent clinical progression following treatment. Repeat CT imaging at 7.5 and 19.5 months post surgery showed no apparent recurrence of the lesion and marked improvement in the remodelling of the mandible. In conclusion, radiotherapy in conjunction with surgical debulking appears to have been successful in treating an ameloblastic carcinoma in this pony and could be considered for similar tumours in other cases. A 12-year-old Clydesdale cross mare was referred for investigation of right periocular vascular distension. Physical examination and ultrasonography confirmed the presence of a varicosity of the veins of the lower eyelid and transverse facial vein. The size of the varicose vein led to concerns about the potential progression in size of the lower eyelid to obstruct vision. Percutaneous encircling sutures were ineffective at occluding the vessel and surgical excision of the abnormal vein was performed. This treatment approach proved effective and 7 months post operatively the swelling has not recurred. This case demonstrates that varicosities can be successfully surgically resected in horses if there is a clinical indication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on interpretations of Foucault's techniques of power, we explored the discourses and power relations operative between groups of girls that appeared to influence their participation in Physical Education (PE) and outside of school in sport and physical activity (PA) in rural and regional communities. Interviews and focus groups were conducted in eight secondary schools with female students from Year 9 (n= 22) and 10 (n= 116). Dominant gendered and performance discourses were active in shaping girls’ construction of what it means to be active or ‘sporty’, and these identity positions were normalised and valued. The perceived and real threat of their peer's gaze as a form of surveillance acted to further perpetuate the power of performance discourses; whereby girls measured and (self) regulated their participation. Community settings were normalised as being exclusively for skilled performers and girls self-regulated their non-participation according to judgements made about their own physical abilities. These findings raise questions about the ways in which power relations, as forged in broader sociocultural and institutional discourse–power relations, can infiltrate the level of the PE classroom to regulate and normalise practices in relation to their, and others, PA participation. Reasons for performing study Empyema of the nasal conchal bullae has recently been identified in horses suffering from chronic unilateral nasal discharge. The diagnosis and management of such cases has not been reported previously. Objectives To describe the diagnosis and treatment of cases suffering from empyema of the nasal conchal bullae and report the frequency of diagnosis from a population of horses referred for head computed tomography ( CT). Study design Retrospective case review. Methods Records from cases diagnosed with nasal conchal bulla disease using CT were reviewed. Results Abnormalities of the nasal conchal bullae were identified by CT in 10 cases (8 ventral conchal bulla, 2 dorsal conchal bulla), from 102 equine head CT examinations. Eight cases were subsequently treated at the study clinic, 7 of which had concurrent paranasal sinus disease. In 3 cases, fenestration of the ventral conchal bulla per nasum facilitated drainage and clearance of empyema. Conclusions Disease of the conchal bullae should be considered as a potential cause of chronic unilateral nasal discharge in horses. Clearance of empyema within these bullae is unlikely to occur through lavage of the paranasal sinuses alone. Where necessary, fenestration of the bulla allows physical removal of infected material. The study of hybrid inviability reveals cryptic divergence between the genetic interactions that maintain stable phenotypes in the pure species . We characterized the effects of natural variation on the penetrance of hybrid inviability phenotypes in crosses between Drosophila melanogaster and two species of the D. simulans subcomplex, D. simulans and D. sechellia. Using a panel of wild-caught lines, we studied the levels of genetic variance present in D. simulans and D. sechellia affecting prezygotic and post-zygotic isolation in hybridizations with D. melanogaster females. We observed extensive variability in the viability of hybrid individuals, dependent on the genotype of the parents, suggesting that intraspecific natural variation manifests directly in hybrid phenotypes. Furthermore, we found that genetic background significantly affects the penetrance of a well-studied determinant of hybrid inviability: the interaction between Hmr mel - Lhr sim. Our results suggest that hybrid inviability - and reproductive isolation generally - can be modified by polymorphisms at multiple loci segregating within the parental species. Just as the penetrance of most mutant phenotypes can be modified by the genetic background within the pure species, the penetrance of hybrid inviability phenotypes is highly influenced by the parental genotypes. Introduction: The iliac bifurcated device (IBD) is an innovative endovascular device for aortoiliac aneurysm repair. The objective of this study is to provide further evidence on the efficacy and safety of the device. Study Design: Case series study with retrospective analysis of prospectively collected nonrandomized data. Methods: Between 2007 and 2010, all consecutive IBD placements were analyzed. The main outcomes included (1) technical failure; (2) morbidity and mortality; and (3) late outcomes. Prospective follow-up was performed by interval computed tomography scanning. Results: In all, 27 consecutive patients had elective placement of 28 IBDs. Mean operating time was 251.1+ 65.4 minutes, mean fluoroscopy time was 63.9+ 27.2 minutes, and mean contrast volume used was 186.2+106.7 mL. Periprocedural type I endoleak occurred in 2 patients. No aneurysm-related adverse events were recorded. Conclusion: We demonstrate that IBDs can be used in patients with aortoiliac aneurysms and are associated with satisfactory medium-term results as expressed by high patency and low reintervention rates.
