Based on existing laboratory research on the visual physiology of walleye Sander vitreus, we tested colours of known spectral sensitivity (i.e., green and orange) using constant and strobing (5 Hz) illumination with an LED‐based light guidance device (LGD). Hatchery‐reared age 0 and 2 years S. vitreus were exposed to these four light combinations as well as an unilluminated control treatment during day and night trials. Age 2 years S. vitreus generally avoided the LGD when light was produced (negative phototaxis) compared with the control, with continuous illumination having a greater effect than strobing. The proportions of both age 0 and 2 year fish exiting illuminating zones of the trial arena did not differ with light colour or strobe rate, suggesting that phototactic behaviours in S. vitreus do not change with ontogeny in these age classes. Our findings confirm that typical behavioural responses of S. vitreus to light stimuli are characterised by avoidance and provide evidence that the use of light for behavioural guidance (deterrence) may be effective at reducing entrainment and impingement of this species on hydraulic barriers during migrations, independent of ontogenetic stage. Hatchery‐reared age 1+ and 4+ lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) were assayed to determine the effectiveness of coloured, strobing LED light guidance device (LGD) at achieving behavioural guidance for attraction or avoidance responses. Based on an initial y‐maze dichotomous choice study in age 1+ fish during daytime, we selected green, blue, orange, and full‐spectrum white light, all strobing at 1 Hz, for further testing. During nighttime light guidance trials, age 1+ sturgeon demonstrated the fastest entries and greatest proportion of entries to the cone of illumination in the experimental raceway when the LGD was producing blue light, and the lowest proportion of entries in response to orange light. Conversely, they also spent the greatest amounts of time under illumination during orange light trials. Blue light was associated with the greatest proportion and total numbers of complete passages through the illuminated zone, although passage rates through this area were observed during the unilluminated control trials. White light resulted in the least time spent in the illuminated zone, and the lowest rates of passage. Under the nighttime testing scenario, the age 4+ sturgeon, by contrast, demonstrated strong avoidance of blue light and white light. While their behaviour was negatively phototactic in general, orange light was the least repulsive. For the behavioural guidance of lake sturgeon moving at night, we recommend the use of blue light strobing at 1 Hz for the attraction of the 1+ age class and white light strobing at 1 Hz for their repulsion. For age 4+ fish, we recommend the use of blue light or white light strobing at 1 Hz for repulsion and caution that (a) light as a behavioural guidance tool appears most effective as a repulsive stimulus, and (b) further testing under both laboratory and field conditions are required. Many populations of migratory fish species, including white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus Richardson), are threatened due to modification of riverine systems and may experience downstream displacement or mortality at water intake structures. Efforts to reduce the impacts of these structures are beginning to incorporate behavioural guidance, where the sensory capabilities of fishes are exploited to repel them from high-risk areas or attract them towards desirable paths. Artificial lighting has been tested before, but consisted of single-spectrum lights. Using a new programmable LED-based light guidance device (LGD), we exposed age-0 white sturgeon to light strobing at 1 Hz, 20 Hz, or constant illumination with colours (green, red, blue) matching the absorbance maxima of their retinal photopigments. The behavioural responses of the sturgeon were assessed using y-maze dichotomous choice tests under both day (light) and night (dark) conditions. Sturgeon demonstrated positive phototaxis under both day and night conditions, and approached the LGD more often when light was continuous or strobing at 20 Hz compared to strobing at 1 Hz. Green light elicited the greatest rates of attraction overall. The combination of strobing and colour may help to protect imperiled fish from waterway development and serve as an effective form of mitigation at hydropower facilities and other human infrastructure where fish may be entrained or impinged. Objectives: An epoxy resin worker developed hypersensitivity pneumonitis requiring lung transplantation and had an abnormal blood lymphocyte proliferation test (LPT) to an epoxy hardener. We assessed the prevalence of symptoms, abnormal spirometry, and abnormal epoxy resin LPT results in epoxy resin workers compared to unexposed workers. Methods: Participants completed questionnaires and underwent spirometry. We collected blood for epoxy resin LPT and calculated stimulation indices for five epoxy resin products. Results: We compared 38 exposed to 32 unexposed workers. Higher exposed workers were more likely to report cough (OR 10.86, [1.23-infinity], p = 0.030) or wheeze (OR 4.44, [1.00-22.25], p = 0.049) than unexposed workers, even controlling for smoking. Higher exposed workers were more likely to have abnormal FEV1 than unexposed workers (OR 10.51, [0.86-589.9], p = 0.071), although not statistically significant when adjusted for smoking. There were no differences in proportion of abnormal epoxy resin system LPTs between exposed and unexposed workers. Conclusions: In summary, workers exposed to epoxy resin system chemicals were more likely to report respiratory symptoms and have abnormal FEV1 than unexposed workers. Use of epoxy resin LPT was not helpful as a biomarker of exposure and sensitization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
