A newly parameterized combined density functional theory and multi-reference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) Hamiltonian, termed core-valence separation (CVS)-QE12, is defined for the computation of K-shell core-excitation and core-ionization energies. This CVS counterpart to the recently reported QE8 Hamiltonian [Costain et al., J. Chem. Phys, 160, 224106 (2024)] is parameterized by fitting to benchmark quality ab initio data. The definition of the CVS-QE12 and QE8 Hamiltonians differ from previous CVS-DFT/MRCI parameterizations in three primary ways: (i) the replacement of the BHLYP exchange–correlation functional with QTP17 to yield a balanced description of both core and valence excitation energies, (ii) the adoption of a new, three-parameter damping function, and (iii) the introduction of separate scaling of the core-valence and valence-valence Coulombic interactions. Crucially, the parameters of the CVS-QE12 Hamiltonian are obtained via fitting exclusively to highly accurate ab initio vertical core-excitation and ionization energies computed at the CVS-EOM-CCSDT level of theory. The CVS-QE12 Hamiltonian is validated against further benchmark computations and is found to furnish K-edge core vertical excitation and ionization energies exhibiting absolute errors ≤0.5 eV at low computational cost. We describe a procedure for the calculation of quasi-diabatic states within the recently introduced DFT/MRCI(2) framework [S. P. Neville and M. S. Schuurman, J. Chem. Phys. 157, 164103 (2022)]. Based on an effective Hamiltonian formalism, the proposed procedure, which we term QD-DFT/MRCI(2), has the advantageous characteristics of being simultaneously highly efficient and effectively black box in nature while directly yielding both quasi-diabatic potentials and wave functions of high quality. A new combined density functional theory and multi-reference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) Hamiltonian parameterized solely using the benchmark ab initio vertical excitation energies obtained from the QUEST databases is presented. This new formulation differs from all previous versions of the method in that the choice of the underlying exchange–correlation (XC) functional employed to construct the one-particle (orbital) basis is considered, and a new XC functional, QTP17, is chosen for its ability to generate a balanced description of core and valence vertical excitation energies. The ability of the new DFT/MRCI Hamiltonian, termed QE8, to furnish accurate excitation energies is confirmed using benchmark quantum chemistry computations, and a mean absolute error of 0.16 eV is determined for the wide range of electronic excitations included in the validation dataset. In particular, the QE8 Hamiltonian dramatically improves the performance of DFT/MRCI for doubly excited states. The performance of fast approximate DFT/MRCI methods, p-DFT/MRCI and DFT/MRCI(2), is also evaluated using the QE8 Hamiltonian, and they are found to yield excitation energies in quantitative agreement with the parent DFT/MRCI method, with the two methods exhibiting a mean difference of 0.01 eV with respect to DFT/MRCI over the entire benchmark set. Climate change continues to fuel concern about the future cost of publicly subsidized crop insurance programs in developed nations. These changes in climate are expected to alter the upper and lower tails of crop yield distributions differently. This may best be captured by modeling the climate–yield relationship heterogeneously across different parts of the yield distribution. To this end, we consider a mixture model with the parameters expressed as nonparametric functions (to capture any nonlinearities) of weather variables estimated by machine learning methods (neural net). By doing so, we are able to identify possibly heterogeneous effects of climate change on each component, the mixing probabilities, and thus all moments of the yield distribution. We find changing climate alters, quite significantly, the entire shape of the yield distribution. The overall probability of the lower tail tends to increase as temperatures rise, to the point where some yield distributions become positively skewed. Across a range of climate change scenarios, premium rates for fixed guarantees are expected to rise 20–66% relative to no climate change by 2040. However, if we allow the yield guarantees to also fall because of additional losses from climate change, premium rates (albeit not comparable given yield guarantees are different) increase notably less (6–14%), suggesting less solvency issues than first thought. Cyclic di-adenylate monophosphate (cyclic di-AMP) is an important second messenger in microorganisms. Cyclic di-AMP regulates bacterial cell volume and turgor via control of potassium and compatible solute transport but is also involved in many other processes, including the activation of the metazoan innate immune response to bacterial infections. We compare the activity of full-length membrane-embedded CdaA, the enzyme that synthesizes cyclic di-AMP, with the water-soluble catalytic domain CdaA-DAC. Purified CdaA from L. lactis was studied in the detergent-solubilized state, and in lipid nanodiscs and vesicles. We show that CdaA is tetrameric and the membrane-bound complex has more than 2-orders of magnitude higher activity than soluble CdaA-DAC. CdaA activity increases with pH but does not strongly depend on the salt or lipid content, factors that are crucial for the control of osmoregulatory transporters. Cryo-EM and in-silico structure prediction of CdaA show that the two DAC dimers engage in a head-to-head interaction, leading to cyclic-di-AMP formation. The inhibitor phosphoglucomutase prevents this active conformation. We observe dynamic flexibility between the catalytic and membrane domains, even in the presence of ATP or non-hydrolyzable substrate ApCpp. This is the first comprehensive functional and structural characterization of a full-length cyclic di-AMP-specific cyclase. The human brain's complex morphology is spatially constrained by numerous intrinsic and extrinsic physical interactions. Spatial constraints help to identify the source of morphological variability and can be investigated by employing anatomical network analysis. Here, a model of human craniocerebral topology is presented, based on the bony elements of the skull at birth and a previously designed model of the brain. The goal was to investigate the topological components fundamental to the craniocerebral geometric balance, to identify underlying phenotypic patterns of spatial arrangement, and to understand how these patterns might have influenced the evolution of human brain morphology. Analysis of the craniocerebral network model revealed that the combined structure of the body and lesser wings of the sphenoid bone, the parahippocampal gyrus, and the parietal and ethmoid bones are susceptible to sustain and apply major spatial constraints that are likely to limit or channel their morphological evolution. The results also showcase a high level of global integration and efficient diffusion of biomechanical forces across the craniocerebral system, a fundamental aspect of morphological variability in terms of plasticity. Finally, community detection in the craniocerebral system highlights the concurrence of a longitudinal and a vertical modular partition. This paper proposes a change in the conceptualisation of home, as part of a wider paradigmatic transformation in the understandings of the boundaries between humans and animals, and nature and culture. A new concept of multispecies homescapes is suggested, building on recent work on human–animal relationships as well as writings on the home in human geography. Multispecies homescapes are approached as imaginary spaces, including experiences of sharing home with other species, the limits and liminalities of homeness, and the loss of a multispecies home. Antibody-dependent complement activation plays a key role in the natural human immune response to infections. Currently, the understanding of which antibody-antigen combinations drive a potent complement response on bacteria is limited. Here, we develop an antigen-agnostic approach to stain and single-cell sort human IgG memory B cells recognizing intact bacterial cells, keeping surface antigens in their natural context. With this method we successfully identified 29 antibodies against K. pneumoniae, a dominant cause of hospital-acquired infections with increasing antibiotic resistance. Combining genetic tools and functional analyses, we reveal that the capacity of antibodies to activate complement on K. pneumoniae critically depends on their antigenic target. Furthermore, we find that antibody combinations can synergistically activate complement on K. pneumoniae by strengthening each other's binding in an Fc-independent manner. Understanding the molecular basis of effective complement activation by antibody combinations to mimic a polyclonal response could accelerate the development of antibody-based therapies against problematic infections. Spatial interactions among anatomical elements help to identify topological factors behind morphological variation and can be investigated through network analysis. Here, a whole‐brain network model of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes, Blumenbach 1776) is presented, based on macroanatomical divisions, and compared with a previous equivalent model of the human brain. The goal was to contrast which regions are essential in the geometric balance of the brains of the two species, to compare underlying phenotypic patterns of spatial variation, and to understand how these patterns might have influenced the evolution of human brain morphology. The human and chimpanzee brains share morphologically complex inferior‐medial regions and a topological organization that matches the spatial constraints exerted by the surrounding braincase. These shared topological features are interesting because they can be traced back to the Chimpanzee‐Human Last Common Ancestor, 7–10 million years ago. Nevertheless, some key differences are found in the human and chimpanzee brains. In humans, the temporal lobe, particularly its deep and medial limbic aspect (the parahippocampal gyrus), is a crucial node for topological complexity. Meanwhile, in chimpanzees, the cerebellum is, in this sense, more embedded in an intricate spatial position. This information helps to interpret brain macroanatomical change in fossil hominids. Shortcomings in cell-based therapies for patients with diabetes have been revealed to be, in part, a result of an improper extracellular matrix (ECM) environment. In vivo, pancreatic islets are emersed in a diverse ECM that provides physical support and is crucial for healthy function. β1-Integrin receptors have been determined to be responsible for modulation of beneficial interactions with ECM proteins influencing beta-cell development, proliferation, maturation, and function. β1-Integrin signaling has been demonstrated to augment insulin secretion by impacting the actin cytoskeleton via activation of focal adhesion kinase and downstream signaling pathways. In other secretory cells, evidence of a bidirectional relationship between integrins and exocytotic machinery has been demonstrated, and, thus, this relationship could be present in pancreatic beta cells. In this review, we will discuss the role of ECM–β1-integrin interplay with exocytotic proteins in controlling pancreatic beta-cell insulin secretion through their dynamic and unique signaling pathway. While HC2 and GP5+/6+ PCR‐EIA were pivotal in test validation of new HPV assays, they represent the first generation of comparator tests based upon technologies that are not in widespread use anymore. In the current guideline, criteria for second‐generation comparator tests are presented that include more detailed resolution of HPV genotypes. Second‐generation comparator tests should preferentially target only the 12 genotypes classified as carcinogenic (IARC‐group I), and show consistent non‐inferior sensitivity for CIN2+ and CIN3+ and specificity for ≤CIN1 compared to one of the first‐generations comparators, in at least three validation studies using benchmarks of 0.95 for relative sensitivity and 0.98 for relative specificity. Validation should take into account used storage media and other sample handling procedures. Meta‐analyses were conducted to identify the assays that fulfill these stringent criteria. Four tests fulfilled the new criteria: (1) RealTime High‐Risk HPV Test (Abbott), (2) Cobas‐4800 HPV test (Roche Molecular System), (3) Onclarity HPV Assay (BD Diagnostics), and (4) Anyplex II HPV HR Detection (Seegene), each evaluated in three to six studies. Whereas the four assays target 14 carcinogenic genotypes, the first two identify separately HPV16 and 18, the third assay identifies five types separately and the fourth identifies all the types separately. The Karner blue butterfly, Plebejus (Lycaeides) samuelis, is an endangered North American climate change‐vulnerable species that has undergone substantial historical habitat loss and population decline. To better understand the species' genetic status and support Karner blue conservation, we sampled 116 individuals from 22 localities across the species' geographical range in Wisconsin (WI), Michigan (MI), Indiana (IN), and New York (NY). Using genomic analysis, we found that these samples were divided into three major geographic groups, NY, WI, and MI‐IN, with populations in WI and MI‐IN each further divided into three subgroups. A high level of inbreeding was revealed by inbreeding coefficients above 10% in almost all populations in our study. However, strong correlation between FST and geographical distance suggested that genetic divergence between populations increases with distance, such that introducing individuals from more distant populations may be a useful strategy for increasing population‐level diversity and preserving the species. We also found that Karner blue populations had lower genetic diversity than closely related species and had more alleles that were present only at low frequencies (<5%) in other species. Some of these alleles may negatively impact individual fitness and may have become prevalent in Karner blue populations due to inbreeding. Finally, analysis of these possibly deleterious alleles in the context of predicted three‐dimensional structures of proteins revealed potential molecular mechanisms behind population declines, providing insights for conservation. This rich new range‐wide understanding of the species' population genomic structure can contextualize past extirpations and help conserve and even enhance Karner blue genetic diversity. Limited accessibility to language resources and technologies represents a challenge for the analysis, preservation, and documentation of natural languages other than English. Linguistic Linked (Open) Data (LLOD) holds the promise to ease the creation, linking, and reuse of multilingual linguistic data across distributed and heterogeneous resources. However, individual language resources and technologies accommodate or target different linguistic description levels, e.g., morphology, syntax, phonology, and pragmatics. In this comprehensive survey, the state-of-the-art of multilinguality and LLOD is being represented with a particular focus on linguistic description levels, identifying open challenges and gaps as well as proposing an ideal ecosystem for multilingual LLOD across description levels. This survey seeks to contribute an introductory text for newcomers to the field of multilingual LLOD, uncover gaps and challenges to be tackled by the LLOD community in reference to linguistic description levels, and present a solid basis for a future best practice of multilingual LLOD across description levels. Introduction: We present our surgical complications resulting in neurological deficit or additional surgery during 25 years of DBS of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) for Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of all PD patients that received STN DBS in our DBS center between 1998 and 2023. Outcomes were complications resulting in neurological deficit or additional surgery. Potential risk factors (number of microelectrode recording tracks, age, anesthesia method, hypertension, and sex) for symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) were analyzed. Furthermore, lead fixation techniques were compared. Results: Eight hundred PD patients (507 men, 293 women) received unilateral (n = 11) or bilateral (n = 789) implantation of STN electrodes. Neurological deficit due to ICH, edema, delirium, or infarction was seen in 8.4% of the patients (7.4% transient, 1.0% permanent). Twenty-two patients (2.8%) had a symptomatic ICH following STN DBS, for which we did not find any risk factors, and five had permanent sequelae due to ICH (0.6%). Of all patients, 18.4% required additional surgery; the proportion was reduced from 27% in the first 300 cases to 13% in the last 500 cases (p < 0.001). The infection rate was 3.5%, which decreased from 5.3% in the first 300 cases to 2.2% in the last 500 cases. The use of a lead anchoring device led to significantly less lead migrations than miniplate fixation. Conclusion: STN DBS leads to permanent neurological deficit in a small number of patients (1.0%), but a substantial proportion needs some additional surgical procedure after the first DBS system implantation. The risk of revision surgery was reduced over time but remained significant. Streptococcus suis, a zoonotic bacterial pathogen circulated through swine, can cause severe infections in humans. Because human S. suis infections are not notifiable in most countries, incidence is underestimated. We aimed to increase insight into the molecular epidemiology of human S. suis infections in Europe. To procure data, we surveyed 7 reference laboratories and performed a systematic review of the scientific literature. We identified 236 cases of human S. suis infection from those sources and an additional 87 by scanning gray literature. We performed whole-genome sequencing to type 46 zoonotic S. suis isolates and combined them with 28 publicly available genomes in a core-genome phylogeny. Clonal complex (CC) 1 isolates accounted for 87% of typed human infections; CC20, CC25, CC87, and CC94 also caused infections. Emergence of diverse zoonotic clades and notable severity of illness in humans support classifying S. suis infection as a notifiable condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Supermarket interventions are promising to promote healthier dietary patterns, but not all individuals may be equally susceptible. We explored whether the effectiveness of nudging and pricing strategies on diet quality differs by psychological and grocery shopping characteristics. Methods: We used data of the 12-month Supreme Nudge parallel cluster-randomised controlled supermarket trial, testing nudging and pricing strategies to promote healthier diets. Participants were Dutch speaking adults aged 30–80 years and regular shoppers of participating supermarkets (n = 12) in socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Data on psychological characteristics (food-related behaviours; price sensitivity; food decision styles; social cognitive factors; self-control) and grocery shopping characteristics (time spent in the supermarket; moment of the day; average supermarket visits; shopping at other retailers; supermarket proximity) were self-reported at baseline. These characteristics were tested for their moderating effects of the intervention on diet quality (scored 0–150) in linear mixed models. Results: We included 162 participants from intervention supermarkets and 199 from control supermarkets (73% female, 58 (± 10.8) years old, 42% highly educated). The interventions had no overall effect on diet quality. Only five out of 23 potential moderators were statistically significant. Yet, stratified analyses of these significant moderators showed no significant effects on diet quality for one of the subgroups and statistically non-significant negative effects for the other. Negative effects were suggested for individuals with lower baseline levels of meal planning (β − 2.6, 95% CI − 5.9; 0.8), healthy shopping convenience (β − 3.0, 95% CI − 7.2; 1.3), and healthy food attractiveness (β − 3.5, 95% CI − 8.3; 1.3), and with higher levels of price consciousness (β − 2.6, 95% CI − 6.2; 1.0) and weekly supermarket visits (β − 2.4, 95% CI − 6.8; 1.9). Conclusions: Adults with varying psychological and grocery shopping characteristics largely seem equally (un)susceptible to nudging and pricing strategies. It might be that certain characteristics lead to adverse effects, but this is not plausible, and the observed negative effects were small and statistically non-significant and may be explained by chance findings. Verification of these findings is needed in real-world trials based on larger sample sizes and with the use of more comprehensive interventions. The conversion of methane or natural gas into turquoise H2 and carbon represents a promising pathway towards decarbonised energy. The pyrolysis of biogas (mainly a mixture of methane and CO2) is considered to be a negative carbon-emission technology, as the carbon source comes from biomass and the carbon is captured in solid form. In addition, the presence of CO2 in the gas mixture enables the dry reforming of methane into syngas. In this study, we show that direct biogas conversion in a fluidised catalytic reactor can produce a syngas whose composition meets the requirements for methanol synthesis or for liquid hydrocarbon production via the Fischer-Tropsch process. Confirmed by thermodynamic analysis, we show that the reaction proceeds at temperatures above 900 1C to produce carbon materials, whereas at lower temperatures the carbon is converted to CO by the Boudouard reaction. At 950 1C, very high methane and CO2 conversions are achieved (490% and 99%, respectively), accompanied by high hydrogen yield (490%) and the sequestration of carbon into a turbostratic structure. We believe that the direct catalytic reforming of biogas in a fluidised bed, when combined in series with an FTS process, could allow the production of liquid fuels with no need for costly gas separation units, in particular those implemented for CO2 capture. Purpose: To study the long-term outcome of revision microdiscectomy after classic microdiscectomy for lumbosacral radicular syndrome (LSRS). Methods: Eighty-eight of 216 patients (41%) who underwent a revision microdiscectomy between 2007 and 2010 for MRI disc-related LSRS participated in this study. Questionnaires included visual analogue scores (VAS) for leg pain, RDQ, OLBD, RAND-36, and seven-point Likert scores for recovery, leg pain, and back pain. Any further lumbar re-revision operation(s) were recorded. Results: Mean (SD) age was 59.8 (12.8), and median [IQR] time of follow-up was 10.0 years [9.0–11.0]. A favourable general perceived recovery was reported by 35 patients (40%). A favourable outcome with respect to perceived leg pain was present in 39 patients (45%), and 35 patients (41%) reported a favourable outcome concerning back pain. The median VAS for leg and back pain was worse in the unfavourable group (48.0/100 mm (IQR 16.0–71.0) vs. 3.0/100 mm (IQR 2.0–5.0) and 56.0/100 mm (IQR 27.0–74.0) vs. 4.0/100 mm (IQR 2.0–17.0), respectively; both p < 0.001). Re-revision operation occurred in 31 (35%) patients (24% same level same side); there was no significant difference in the rate of favourable outcome between patients with or without a re-revision operation. Conclusion: The long-term results after revision microdiscectomy for LSRS show an unfavourable outcome in the majority of patients and a high risk of re-revision microdiscectomy, with similar results. Based on also the disappointing results of alternative treatments, revision microdiscectomy for recurrent LSRS seems to still be a valid treatment. Riding became a widespread leisure activity for children in Sweden and Finland during the post-war decades through the emergence of riding schools. Drawing on books and comics published in Sweden and Finland from the 1960s to the present, together with interviews and observations at contemporary Swedish riding schools, we approach this development with a geographical, historical and sociological focus. We ask how children's equestrian cultures were formed within the spaces of horse yards, especially riding schools, and how caring well was understood and negotiated through different types of knowledge and the idea and practice of horse ownership. As we show in the analysis, despite the increase of written knowledge about horses and their care, situated and relational knowledges based on interspecies interaction prevailed in children's equestrian cultural spheres in which children had a chance to interact with animals and care for them outside the everyday spaces of family and school. In these cultures of interspecies care, ideas of horse ownership carried expectations of continuity where the child–horse relationship was secured and could develop. The entry to these spatial cultures was through rites of passage characterised by embodied interaction and hands-on care, where children learned to care for animals well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Primary orthostatic tremor (OT) can affect patients' life. Treatment of OT with deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the thalamic ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) is described in a limited number of patients. The Vim and posterior subthalamic area (PSA) can be targeted in a single trajectory, allowing both stimulation of the Vim and/or dentatorubrothalamic tract (DRT). In essential tremor this is currently often used with positive effects. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Vim/DRT‐DBS in OT‐patients, based on standing time and Quality of Life (QoL), also on the long‐term. Furthermore, to relate stimulation of the Vim and DRT, medial lemniscus (ML) and pyramidal tract (PT) to beneficial clinical and side‐effects. Methods: Nine severely affected OT‐patients received bilateral Vim/DRT‐DBS. Primary outcome measure was standing time; secondary measures included self‐reported measures, neurophysiological measures, structural analyses, surgical complications, stimulation‐induced side‐effects, and QoL up to 56 months. Stimulation of volume of tissue activated (VTA) were related to outcome measures. Results: Average maximum standing time increased from 41.0 s ± 51.0 s to 109.3 s ± 65.0 s after 18 months, with improvements measured in seven of nine patients. VTA (n = 7) overlapped with the DRT in six patients and with the ML and/or PT in six patients. All patients experienced side‐effects and QoL worsened during the first year after surgery, which improved again during long‐term follow‐up, although remaining below age‐related normal values. Most patients reported a positive effect of DBS. Conclusion: Vim/DRT‐DBS improved standing time in patients with severe OT. Observed side‐effects are possibly related to stimulation of the ML and PT. Background and Aim: Non-pharmacological treatments such as electroencephalogram (EEG) neurofeedback have become more important in multidisciplinary approaches to treat chronic pain. The aim of this scoping review is to identify the literature on the effects of EEG neurofeedback in reducing pain complaints in adult chronic-pain patients and to elaborate on the neurophysiological rationale for using specific frequency bands as targets for EEG neurofeedback. Methods: A pre-registered scoping review was set up and reported following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The data were collected by searching for studies published between 1985 and January 2023 in PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. Results: Thirty-two studies on various types of chronic pain were included. The intervention was well-tolerated. Approximately half of the studies used a protocol that reinforced alpha or sensorimotor rhythms and suppressed theta or beta activity. However, the underlying neurophysiological rationale behind these specific frequency bands remains unclear. Conclusions: There are indications that neurofeedback in patients with chronic pain probably has short-term analgesic effects; however, the long-term effects are less clear. In order to draw more stable conclusions on the effectiveness of neurofeedback in chronic pain, additional research on the neurophysiological mechanisms of targeted frequency bands is definitely worthwhile. Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is efficacious for treating motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Objectives: The aim is to evaluate the evidence regarding DBS effectiveness after postoperative cognitive deterioration, the impact of preoperative cognition on DBS effectiveness, and the impact of DBS on cognition. Methods: Literature searches were performed on MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL (Cochrane library). Primary outcomes were OFF‐drug Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale Part III score and cognitive test scores. Results: DBS effectiveness did not differ in patients with postoperative declining compared to stable cognition (n = 5 studies). Preoperative cognition did not influence DBS effectiveness (n = 1 study). DBS moderately decreased verbal fluency compared to the best medical treatment (n = 24 studies), which may be transient. Conclusion: DBS motor effectiveness in PD does not appear to be influenced by cognition. DBS in PD seems cognitively safe, except for a moderate decline in verbal fluency. We introduce a perturbative approximation to the combined density functional theory and multireference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) approach. The method, termed DFT/MRCI(2), results from the application of quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (QDPT) and the Epstein–Nesbet partitioning to the DFT/MRCI Hamiltonian matrix. The application of QDPT obviates the need to diagonalize the large DFT/MRCI Hamiltonian; electronic energies are instead obtained as the eigenvalues of a small effective Hamiltonian, affording an orders of magnitude savings in the computational cost. Most importantly, the DFT/MRCI(2) approximation is found to be of excellent accuracy, furnishing excitation energies with a root mean squared deviation from the canonical DFT/MRCI values of less than 0.03 eV for an extensive test set of organic molecules. In most cases, the ultrafast dynamics of resonantly excited molecules are considered and almost always computed in the molecular frame, while experiments are carried out in the laboratory frame. Here, we provide a formalism in terms of a lab frame density matrix, which connects quantum dynamics in the molecular frame to those in the laboratory frame, providing a transparent link between computation and measurement. The formalism reveals that in any such experiment, the molecular frame dynamics vary for molecules in different orientations and that certain coherences, which are potentially experimentally accessible, are rejected by the orientation-averaged reduced vibronic density matrix. Instead, molecular angular distribution moments are introduced as a more accurate representation of experimentally accessible information. Furthermore, the formalism provides a clear definition of a molecular frame quantum tomography and specifies the requirements to perform such a measurement enabling the experimental imaging of molecular frame vibronic dynamics. The patient showed significant improvement with levodopa and subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS). Rationale: The plasma lipidome has the potential to reflect many facets of the host status during severe infection. Previous work is limited to specific lipid groups or was focused on lipids as prognosticators. Objectives: To map the plasma lipidome during sepsis due to community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and determine the disease specificity and associations with clinical features. Methods: We analyzed 1,833 lipid species across 33 classes in 169 patients admitted to the ICU with sepsis due to CAP, 51 noninfected ICU patients, and 48 outpatient controls. In a paired analysis, we reanalyzed patients still in the ICU 4 days after admission (n = 82). Measurements and Main Results: A total of 58% of plasma lipids were significantly lower in patients with CAP-attributable sepsis compared with outpatient controls (6% higher, 36% not different). We found strong lipid class–specific associations with disease severity, validated across two external cohorts, and inflammatory biomarkers, in which triacylglycerols, cholesterol esters, and lysophospholipids exhibited the strongest associations. A total of 36% of lipids increased over time, and stratification by survival revealed diverging lipid recovery, which was confirmed in an external cohort; specifically, a 10% increase in cholesterol ester levels was related to a lower odds ratio (0.84; P = 0.006) for 30-day mortality (absolute mortality, 18 of 82). Comparison with noninfected ICU patients delineated a substantial common illness response (57.5%) and a distinct lipidomic signal for patients with CAP-attributable sepsis (37%). Conclusions: Patients with sepsis due to CAP exhibit a time-dependent and partially disease-specific shift in their plasma lipidome that correlates with disease severity and systemic inflammation and is associated with higher mortality. Background: Identifying the dorsolateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be challenging due to the size and double‐oblique orientation. Since 2015 we implemented 7‐Tesla T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging (7 T T2) for improving visualization and targeting of the dorsolateral STN. We describe the changes in surgical planning and outcome since implementation of 7 T T2 for DBS in PD. Methods: By comparing two cohorts of STN DBS patients in different time periods we evaluated the influence of 7 T T2 on STN target planning, the number of microelectrode recording (MER) trajectories, length of STN activity and the postoperative motor (UPDRS) improvement. Results: From February 2007 to January 2014, 1.5 and 3‐Tesla T2 guided STN DBS with 3 MER channels was performed in 76 PD patients. Average length of recorded STN activity in the definite electrode trajectory was 3.9 ± 1.5 mm. From January 2015 to January 2022 7 T T2 and MER‐guided STN DBS was performed in 182 PD patients. Average length of recorded STN activity in the definite electrode trajectory was 5.1 ± 1.3 mm and used MER channels decreased from 3 to 1. Average UPDRS improvement was comparable. Conclusion: Implementation of 7 T T2 for STN DBS enabled a refinement in targeting. Combining classical DBS targeting with dorsolateral STN alignment may be used to determine the optimal trajectory. The improvement in dorsolateral STN visualization can be used for further target refinements, for example adding probabilistic subthalamic connectivity, to enhance clinical outcome of STN DBS. Rationale: Lymphopenia in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is associated with increased mortality. Objectives: To explore the association between lymphopenia, host response aberrations, and mortality in patients with lymphopenic COVID-19. Methods: We determined 43 plasma biomarkers reflective of four pathophysiological domains: endothelial cell and coagulation activation, inflammation and organ damage, cytokine release, and chemokine release. We explored if decreased concentrations of lymphocyte-derived proteins in patients with lymphopenia were associated with an increase in mortality. We sought to identify host response phenotypes in patients with lymphopenia by cluster analysis of plasma biomarkers. Measurements and Main Results: A total of 439 general ward patients with COVID-19 were stratified by baseline lymphocyte counts: normal (>1.0 × 109/L; n = 167), mild lymphopenia (>0.5 to ⩽1.0 × 109/L; n = 194), and severe lymphopenia (⩽0.5 × 109/L; n = 78). Lymphopenia was associated with alterations in each host response domain. Lymphopenia was associated with increased mortality. Moreover, in patients with lymphopenia (n = 272), decreased concentrations of several lymphocyte-derived proteins (e.g., CCL5, IL-4, IL-13, IL-17A) were associated with an increase in mortality (at P < 0.01 or stronger significance levels). A cluster analysis revealed three host response phenotypes in patients with lymphopenia: "hyporesponsive" (23.2%), "hypercytokinemic" (36.4%), and "inflammatory-injurious" (40.4%), with substantially differing mortality rates of 9.5%, 5.1%, and 26.4%, respectively. A 10-biomarker model accurately predicted these host response phenotypes in an external cohort with similar mortality distribution. The inflammatory-injurious phenotype showed a remarkable combination of relatively high inflammation and organ damage markers with high antiinflammatory cytokine levels yet low proinflammatory cytokine levels. Conclusions: Lymphopenia in COVID-19 signifies a heterogenous group of patients with distinct host response features. After severe brain injury, zolpidem is known to cause spectacular, often short-lived, restorations of brain functions in a small subgroup of patients. Previously, we showed that these zolpidem-induced neurological recoveries can be paralleled by significant changes in functional connectivity throughout the brain. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical intervention known to modulate functional connectivity in a wide variety of neurological disorders. In this study, we used DBS to restore arousal and motivation in a zolpidem-responsive patient with severe brain injury and a concomitant disorder of diminished motivation, more than 10 years after surviving hypoxic ischemia. We found that DBS of the central thalamus, targeted at the centromedian-parafascicular complex, immediately restored arousal and was able to transition the patient from a state of deep sleep to full wakefulness. Moreover, DBS was associated with temporary restoration of communication and ability to walk and eat in an otherwise wheelchair-bound and mute patient. With the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG), we revealed that DBS was generally associated with a marked decrease in aberrantly high levels of functional connectivity throughout the brain, mimicking the effects of zolpidem. These results imply that ‘pathological hyperconnectivity’ after severe brain injury can be associated with reduced arousal and behavioral performance and that DBS is able to modulate connectivity towards a ‘healthier baseline’ with lower synchronization, and, can restore functional brain networks long after severe brain injury. The presence of hyperconnectivity after brain injury may be a possible future marker for a patient’s responsiveness for restorative interventions, such as DBS, and suggests that lower degrees of overall brain synchronization may be conducive to cognition and behavioral responsiveness. Research summary: We compare European and North American radicalization trajectories that led to involvement in terrorist violence (n = 103) with those for which this outcome did not occur (n = 103). Regression analyses illustrate how involvement in terrorist violence is determined not only by the presence of risk, but also the absence of protective factors. Bivariate analyses highlight the importance of considering the temporality of these factors; i.e., whether they are present before or after radicalization onset. The most salient risk factors identified were alignment with a group or movement with an exclusively violent strategic logic, and access to weapons. In terms of protective factors, parenting children during radicalization, self‐control, and participation in extremist groups with a strategic logic that was not exclusively focused on violent means were all associated with noninvolvement in terrorist violence. Policy implications: Different patterns of risk and protective factors influence whether radicalization will, or will not, lead to involvement in terrorist violence. One‐size‐fits‐all radicalization‐prevention efforts may therefore be less effective than programs tailored to address a particular outcome. Even when terrorist violence is prevented, the targeted individual is likely to remain radicalized. Preventative efforts must carefully assess whether the measures used to avert terrorist violence in the short‐term risk contributing to a longer term societal threat. Background: Neuroimaging studies suggest an association between apathy after deep brain stimulation (DBS) and stimulation of the ventral part of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) due to the associative fibers connected to the non-motor limbic circuits that are involved in emotion regulation and motivation. We have previously described three patients with severe apathy that could be fully treated after switching stimulation from a ventral electrode contact point to a more dorsal contact point. Objectives: To determine whether more dorsal stimulation of the STN decreases apathy compared to standard care in a multicenter randomized controlled trial with a crossover design. Methods: We will include 26 patients with a Starkstein Apathy Scale (SAS) score of 14 or more after subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) for refractory Parkinson's disease. This is a multicenter trial conducted in two teaching hospitals and one university medical center in the Netherlands after at least 3 months of STN DBS. Our intervention will consist of 1 month of unilateral dorsal STN stimulation compared to treatment as usual. The primary outcome is a change in SAS score following 1 month of DBS on the original contact compared to the SAS score following 1 month of DBS on the more dorsal contact. Secondary outcomes are symptom changes on the Movement Disorders Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor part III, Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, 39-item Parkinson's disease questionnaire, Parkinson's disease impulsive-compulsive disorders questionnaire, changes in levodopa-equivalent daily dosage, apathy rated by the caregiver, and burden and quality of life of the caregiver. The effect of water on the modification of acidic properties of Nb2O5 and Nb1.3MnOx catalysts was investigated using the cracking of cumene as model reaction, and compared to the behavior of a HZSM-5 catalyst. Nb1.3MnOx exhibited stronger Lewis acidity than Nb2O5, which translated into a higher selectivity towards α-methylstyrene formed on Lewis acid sites (LAS) by dehydrogenation of cumene. Steam enhanced strongly the conversion of cumene over both Nb-based catalysts. The products distribution on Nb-based catalysts was also deeply modified in the presence of steam, the selectivity towards α-methylstyrene decreasing strongly in favor of benzene, which is formed on Brønsted acid sites (BAS) by dealkylation of cumene. In contrast, the performances of HZSM-5 for cumene cracking and the products distribution were only marginally modified in the presence of steam. A kinetic model based on the elementary steps of the cumene reaction pathways (dealkylation and dehydrogenation) was used to estimate the ratio of LAS to BAS in absence and presence of water over Nb1.3MnOx. The activation energy of the cracking reaction was higher than that of the dehydrogenation reaction. The model described correctly the changes in the catalyst activity induced by addition of ≈2 V% of water, which resulted in a decrease in the [LAS]/[BAS] ratio from approximatively 3 to 1.
