Super-ferritic stainless steels are characterized by structure and properties similar to those of more common ferritic alloys, with the advantage of higher chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo) levels aimed to increase high temperature resistance and corrosion behavior in aggressive environments, such as seawater. This paper focuses on the corrosion behavior of recently developed super-ferritic stainless steels. Such steels are characterized by a Cr content ranging from 21% to 24% and very low carbon and nitrogen levels (C + N < 0.015%). Many advanced steels are based on tempered martensitic microstructures. Their mechanical strength is characterized by fine sub-grain structures with a high density of free dislocations and metallic carbides and/or nitrides. However, the strength for practical use has been limited mostly to below 1400 MPa, owing to delayed fractures that are caused by hydrogen. A literature survey suggests that ε-carbide in the tempered martensite is effective for strengthening. A preliminary experimental survey of the hydrogen absorption and hydrogen embrittlement of a tempered martensitic steel with ε-carbide precipitates suggested that the proper use of carbides in steels can promote a high resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. Based on the surveys, martensitic steels that are highly resistant to hydrogen embrittlement and that have high strength and toughness are proposed. The heuristic design of the steels includes alloying elements necessary to stabilize the ε-carbide and procedures to introduce inoculants for the controlled nucleation of ε-carbide. The AA7050 alloy prepared through the standard industrial hot-forging cycle has been investigated by means of isothermal mechanical spectroscopy (MS) from room temperature up to 185 °C. Each MS test consisted of a cycle with two stages, at increasing and decreasing strain. After each cycle the damping value resulted to be higher than the original one indicating the occurrence of an irreversible transformation. Such phenomenon, observed for all the test temperatures, becomes more relevant for T ≥ 150 °C. The irreversible transformation has been discussed and explained by considering the evolution of the mean dislocation link length between pinning points represented by nanometric MgZn2 precipitates. The breakaway of dislocation segments from pinning points occurs in the stage at increasing strain and is not fully recovered during the second stage at decreasing strain thus the mean link length increases in a MS test cycle. The onset of thermal activated dislocation cross-slip at about 150 °C favors the dislocation breakaway and consequently enhances the effect on damping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The open die forging sequence design and optimization are usually performed by simulating many different configurations corresponding to different forging strategies. Finite element analysis (FEM) is a tool able to simulate the open die forging process. However, FEM is relatively slow and therefore it is not suitable for the rapid design of online forging processes. A new approach is proposed in this work in order to describe the plastic strain at the core of the piece. FEM takes into account the plastic deformation at the core of the forged pieces. At the first stage, a thermomechanical FEM model was implemented in the MSC.Marc commercial code in order to simulate the open die forging process. Starting from the results obtained through FEM simulations, a set of equations describing the plastic strain at the core of the piece have been identified depending on forging parameters (such as length of the contact surface between tools and ingot, tool's connection radius, and reduction of the piece height after the forging pass). An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was trained and tested in order to correlate the equation coefficients with the forging to obtain the behavior of plastic strain at the core of the piece.
