The influence of deep and regional geological structures is becoming increasingly important in superhot geothermal systems due to their proximity to the transition between brittleness and ductility. In the Los Humeros geothermal field in Mexico, where subsurface fluids reach temperatures of over 350 °C, the surface structures resulting from the collapse of calderas have so far only been interpreted at the local scale. The aim of this work is to place the recent tectonic and volcano-tectonic geomorphologic evolution and structures in the Los Humeros volcanic area in a regional context. NE- and NW-striking dominant structures resulting from a morpho-structural analysis on a regional scale are confirmed by negative and positive anomalies, respectively, after Butterworth filtering of gravity field data with different wavelengths over a local area of about 1000 km2. By analyzing the slip and dilation trends of the observed directions, we show the relevance of the regional context for reservoir exploration. The magnitudes of the principal stresses we estimate indicate a trans-tensional fault regime, a combination of strike-slip and normal faulting. The structures derived from the gravity and morpho-structural analyses, which are parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, have the highest potential for tensile and shear failure. Therefore, the corresponding negative gravity anomalies could be related to fracture porosity. High-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) systems are designed for seasonal storage of large amounts of thermal energy to meet the demand of industrial processes or district heating systems at high temperatures (> 100 °C). The resulting high injection temperatures or pressures induce thermo- and poroelastic stress changes around the injection well. This study estimates the impact of stress changes in the reservoir on ground surface deformation and evaluates the corresponding risk. Using a simplified coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) model of the planned DeepStor demonstrator in the depleted Leopoldshafen oil field (Upper Rhine Graben, Germany), we show that reservoir heating is associated with stress changes of up to 6 MPa, which can cause vertical displacements at reservoir depth in the order of 10–3 m in the immediate vicinity of the hot injection well. Both the stress changes and the resulting displacements in the reservoir are dominated by thermoelasticity, which is responsible for up to 90% of the latter. Uplift at the surface, on the contrary, is primarily controlled by poroelasticity with by two orders of magnitude attenuated displacements of << 10–3 m. Our calculations further show that the reservoir depth, elastic modulus, and injection/production rates are the dominant controlling parameters for the uplift, showing variations of up to two order of magnitudes between shallower reservoirs with low elastic moduli and deeper and more competent reservoirs. In addition, our findings demonstrate that the cyclic operation of HT-ATES systems reduces the potential for uplift compared to the continuous injection and production of conventional geothermal doublets, hydrocarbon production, or CO2 storage. Consequently, at realistic production and injection rates and targeting reservoirs at depths of at least several hundred meters, the risk of ground surface movement associated with HT-ATES operations in depleted oil fields in, e.g., the Upper Rhine Graben is negligible. The geoelectric properties of the geothermal system associated with the Tolhuaca volcano were investigated by three-dimensional (3D) inversion of magnetotelluric (MT) data. This study presents the first resistivity model of the Tolhuaca volcano derived from 3D MT inversion to have a better understanding of its magmatic and hydrothermal system. We selected data from 54 MT stations for 3D inversion. We performed a series of 3D MT inversion tests by changing the type of data to be inverted, as well as the starting model to obtain a model in agreement with the geology. The final 3D MT model presents a conductive body (<20 Ωm) located 2 km below the summit of Tolhuaca volcano, inferred as a shallow magmatic storage compartment. We also distinguish a ~300 m thick layer of high conductivity (<10 Ωm) corresponding to argillic hydrothermal alteration. The MT model includes two resistive bodies (~200 Ωm) in the upper crust below the laterally displaced argillic alteration layer to the west beneath the extinct Tolhuaca, which would correspond to a shallow reservoir (~1000 m from the surface) and a deep reservoir (>1800 m from the surface) that had so far not been identified by previous resistivity models. The crystalline basement is considered a ubiquitous and almost inexhaustible source of geothermal energy in the Upper Rhine Graben (URG) and other regions worldwide. The hydraulic properties of the basement, which are one of the key factors in the productivity of geothermal power plants, are primarily controlled by hydraulically active faults and fractures. While the most accurate in situ information about the general fracture network is obtained from image logs of deep boreholes, such data are generally sparse and costly and thus often not openly accessible. To circumvent this problem, an outcrop analogue study was conducted with interdisciplinary geoscientific methods in the Tromm Granite, located in the southern Odenwald at the northeastern margin of the URG. Using light detection and ranging (lidar) scanning, the key characteristics of the fracture network were extracted in a total of five outcrops; these were additionally complemented by lineament analysis of two different digital elevation models (DEMs). Based on this, discrete fracture network (DFN) models were developed to calculate equivalent permeability tensors under assumed reservoir conditions. The influences of different parameters, such as fracture orientation, density, aperture and mineralization, were investigated. In addition, extensive gravity and radon measurements were carried out in the study area, allowing fault zones with naturally increased porosity and permeability to be mapped. Gravity anomalies served as input data for a stochastic density inversion, through which areas of potentially increased open porosity were identified. A laterally heterogeneous fracture network characterizes the Tromm Granite, with the highest natural permeabilities expected at the pluton margin, due to the influence of large shear and fault zones. Current geophysical joint inversion methods can be roughly divided into structurally or property driven. While structural coupling plays a key role in fully heterogeneous environments, it is blind to the actual physical properties, which limit its application. On the other hand, approaches based on direct property-correlations promise strong coupled models using petrophysical linkages derived from rock physics or through the search for cross-property relationships in the objective function directly, for example, fuzzy-clusters or correspondence maps. We apply a correspondence maps (CM) methodology to the joint estimation of density and magnetization in 3-D environments using gravity and magnetic data. CM joint inversion has yet to be applied to the specific combination of gravity and magnetic data, nor compared to other approaches like cross-gradient coupling or fuzzy-clustering. The CM searches for cross-property functional relationships; it has the potential to allow a gradual property variation that is not restricted to a predetermined number of homogeneous zones. We tested the algorithm using two illustrative synthetic examples to analyse the compositional and geometrical improvements and thoroughly investigate its capacity to recover a study model based on potential features in a geothermal scenario using polynomials. We investigated the case of using lower and higher polynomials than required for recovering the second synthetic model. The nature of the inversion suggested instability when high-grade polynomials were used, which was successfully overcome by gradually increasing the number of coefficients. The strategy was satisfactorily implemented to the field data. We applied the algorithm over the Los Humeros geothermal field in Mexico and fit a quadratic relationship between density and magnetization that exhibits two main zones consistent with previous works. The first one contains relatively low density and high magnetization. The second zone contains low density and low magnetization values. In this last zone, we emphasize that an observed link between low density, low magnetization, and major fault zones with high relevance to geothermal exploration is resulting from joint inversion, only. We achieved an enhanced petrophysical and structural integrated subsurface imaging in synthetic and field cases at the expense of slightly increased RMS misfit value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Germany 2050: For the first time Germany reached a balance between its sources of anthropogenic CO2 to the atmosphere and newly created anthropogenic sinks. This backcasting study presents a fictional future in which this goal was achieved by avoiding (∼645 Mt CO2), reducing (∼50 Mt CO2) and removing (∼60 Mt CO2) carbon emissions. This meant substantial transformation of the energy system, increasing energy efficiency, sector coupling, and electrification, energy storage solutions including synthetic energy carriers, sector‐specific solutions for industry, transport, and agriculture, as well as natural‐sink enhancement and technological carbon dioxide options. All of the above was necessary to achieve a net‐zero CO2 system for Germany by 2050. Plain Language Summary: Here a net‐zero‐2050 Germany is envisioned by combining analysis from an energy‐system model with insights into approaches that allow for a higher carbon circularity in the German system, and first results from assessments of national carbon dioxide removal potentials. A back‐casting perspective is applied on how net‐zero Germany could look like in 2050. We are looking back from 2050, and analyzing how Germany for the first time reached a balance between its sources of CO2 to the atmosphere and the anthropogenic sinks created. This would consider full decarbonization in the entire energy sector and being entirely emission‐free by 2050 within three priorities identified as being the most useful strategies for achieving net‐zero: (a) Avoiding‐ (b) Reducing‐ (c) Removing emissions. Challenges for geosciences with societal relevance include the use of crystalline geothermal reservoirs for the energy transition as well as final disposal. Crystalline rocks, along with clay and salt, are being considered as host rocks in the ongoing search for a suitable site for a nuclear waste repository in Germany. Currently, there is no existing experience in terms of excavating a repository within crystalline rocks in Germany. In the case of geothermal energy, the greatest potential – as yet untapped – lies in the crystalline basement. New targeted, science-based strategies are the key to harness this energy under safe, sustainable, predictable, and efficient conditions. The research infrastructure GeoLaB ("Geothermal Laboratory in the crystalline Basement") is the first underground laboratory to be built in Germany for many years and offers unique opportunities for the geoscientific community. In the following, GeoLaB will be described, and the synergies it offers for geothermal research and also for nuclear waste disposal will be elaborated. GeoLaB aims to scientifically address and overcome the key challenges of deep geothermal exploitation of fractured crystalline reservoirs. To reach these goals of (1) sustainable reservoir technology, (2) wellbore safety, and (3) productivity enhancement in deep crystalline reservoirs, GeoLaB is designed as an underground laboratory consisting of a main gallery starting at the surface, providing access to several subsurface openings. These are typically small caverns in which or from which the planned scientific experiments will be conducted and observed. The first phase of the project began in January 2023 and will primarily consist of an exploration campaign to identify and characterize a suitable site. The Black Forest and Odenwald are considered suitable locations for the planned underground laboratory related to specific scientific and technical criteria. Here, the rocks of the crystalline basement, which are an important geothermal reservoir in the Upper Rhine Graben, have been lifted up and are thus accessible for science. In the Upper Rhine Graben and Black Forest–Odenwald complex, a good database and a high level of expertise has been built-up over decades by science, the petroleum industry, and geothermal activities. The technical measures in the development phase until 2029 include intensive monitoring as well as underground mining development and the construction of a control and visitor center above ground. A digital twin of the GeoLaB, named "Virtual GeoLaB", will accompany the development of the research infrastructure already during the construction phase and support the scientific investigations, including planning, analysis, and documentation, in the operation phase. It is used for visual analysis and data storage and will play an important role in communication with stakeholders, decision-makers, and the public. In its dialog and participation concept, GeoLaB focuses on transparency and offers citizens opportunities for active participation. It takes action in communication and knowledge transfer as well as education. GeoLaB will be developed as a blueprint for environmentally sound technology developments in the underground, and it will incorporate multiple research perspectives. With BGE (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung) joining GeoLaB, the exploration and building phases, in particular, have become a mutual effort. From the perspective of safe nuclear waste disposal, several topics of the GeoLaB project are of interest even though the target rock characteristics differ to some extent. The collaboration starts with the planning phase for the underground laboratory. The geophysical exploration together with the required drilling, logging, testing, and monitoring of exploration wells is comparable – to a large extent – regardless of the purpose of the mine. Several topics with relevance to Germany's current nuclear waste disposal site selection process are part of the scientific work within GeoLaB, for instance the characterization and quantification of the subsurface stress regime. Furthermore, regulatory topics and outreach intersect greatly. Finally, the excavation of the mine is of utmost interest from the perspective of nuclear waste disposal. In this paper, an underground experiment at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (HRL) is described. Main goal is optimizing geothermal heat exchange in crystalline rock mass at depth by multistage hydraulic fracturing with minimal impact on the environment, that is, seismic events. For this, three arrays with acoustic emission, microseismicity and electromagnetic sensors are installed mapping hydraulic fracture initiation and growth. Fractures are driven by three different water injection schemes (continuous, progressive and pulse pressurization). After a brief review of hydraulic fracture operations in crystalline rock mass at mine scale, the site geology and the stress conditions at Äspö HRL are described. Then, the continuous, single-flow rate and alternative, multiple-flow rate fracture breakdown tests in a horizontal borehole at depth level 410 m are described together with the monitoring networks and sensitivity. Monitoring results include the primary catalogue of acoustic emission hypocentres obtained from four hydraulic fractures with the in situ trigger and localizing network. The continuous versus alternative water injection schemes are discussed in terms of the fracture breakdown pressure, the fracture pattern from impression packer result and the monitoring at the arrays. An example of multistage hydraulic fracturing with several phases of opening and closing of fracture walls is evaluated using data from acoustic emissions, seismic broad-band recordings and electromagnetic signal response. Based on our limited amount of in situ tests (six) and evaluation of three tests in Ävrö granodiorite, in the multiple-flow rate test with progressively increasing target pressure, the acoustic emission activity starts at a later stage in the fracturing process compared to the conventional fracturing case with continuous water injection. In tendency, also the total number and magnitude of acoustic events are found to be smaller in the progressive treatment with frequent phases of depressurization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mid-crustal conductors are a common phenomenon in magnetotelluric studies. In the Andean Cordillera of southern Chile, they appear to concentrate along major fault zones. A highresolution, broad-band magnetotelluric survey including 31 stations has been carried out along two profiles perpendicular to (1) the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault Systems (LOFS) and (2) the Villarrica-Quetrupillán-Laín volcanic lineament running parallel to the Mocha-Villarrica Fault Zone (MVFZ). The survey aimed at tracing one of the known conductors from mid-crustal depth to near-surface along these faults. Directionality and dimensionality were analysed using tensor decomposition. Phase tensors and induction arrows reveal two major geoelectric strike directions following the strike of LOFS and MVFZ. 2-D inversion shows low resistivity zones along both fault systems down to a depth of >10 km, where the brittle-ductile transition is expected. Along the LOFS, the two anomalies are linked to (1) Lake Caburgua, where the LOFS broadens to about 2 km of lateral extension and seems to represent a pull-apart structure, and (2) the intersection with the Villarrica-Quetrupillán-Laín volcanic lineament, where seismic activitywas observed during the latest eruption inMarch 2015.Aconnection of the mid-crustal conductor to the ESE-WNW-striking fault zones is indicated from the presented data. High flow rate injection and related hydromechanical interaction are the most important factors in reservoir development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). GeoLaB, a new generic geothermal underground research laboratory (URL), is proposed for controlled high flow rate experiments (CHFE) to address limited comprehension of coupled processes connected to EGS reservoir flow conditions. As analogue for typical EGS development, CHFE require specific hydromechanical conditions including a connected fracture network in crystalline basement rock, sufficient hydraulic fracture transmissivities, a strike-slip to normal faulting tectonic regime, controllable hydraulic boundary conditions, and hydrothermal alteration fracture fillings that improve conditions for hydromechanical interaction. With the aim to identify most appropriate areas for future site selection, four criteria have been established based on the EGS reference site of Soultz. Two URLs in crystalline basement worldwide approximate the requirements of a new generic GeoLaB and may be used for accompanying experimentation. Besides favourable geological, hydraulic, and stress conditions, the vicinity to long-term EGS production favours the southern Black Forest as potential region for GeoLaB. Therefore, an exemplary site assessment has been carried out at 'Wilhelminenstollen' in the southern Black Forest (Germany). New remote sensing, hydrochemical, and geophysical analyses as well as reactivation potential, and stress modelling were added to complement existing geological and hydrogeological information. At this site, reactivation potential analysis reveals two local maxima prone for shear reactivation as strike-slip faults. The highest lineament density is observed for the N110°E strike direction that is associated with both slip and dilation tendency maxima. Clay minerals occur in fractures and the matrix. Local, partly water-bearing fractures, when partly filled with ore minerals, were connected to veins in the tunnel using shallow geophysical methods. Hydrochemical data reveal infiltration of the tunnel water from at least 500 m above the tunnel. The results suggest a crystalline basement with a fracture network that is regionally connected and water-conducting. Hydraulic conductivity in the southern Black Forest granite is estimated to amount to about 4.5·10 m s at 500 m depth. The hydraulic boundary conditions exclude unknown drainage. Analyses of the influence of topography on orientation and magnitude of the maximum stress indicate a minimum overburden of about 500 m for regional reactivation to be valid. In conclusion, the southern Black Forest and in particular 'Wilhelminenstollen' offers favourable condition for CHFE. Some of the major geothermal anomalies in central Europe are linked to tectonic structures within the top of crystalline basement, which modify strongly the top of this basement. Their assessment is a major challenge in exploration geophysics. Gravity has been proven to be suitable for the detection of mainly large scale lithological and structural inhomogeneities. Indeed, it is well known and proven by different wells that, for example, in northern Switzerland extended negative anomalies are linked to such structures. Due to depth limitation of wells, there vertical extension is often unknown. In this study, we have investigated the potential of gravity for the geometrical characterization of such basement structures. Our approach consists in the combination of the series of Butterworth filters, geological modelling and best-fitting between observed and computed residual anomalies. In this respect, filters of variable wavelength are applied to observed and computed gravity data. The geological model is discretized into a finite element mesh. Near-surface anomalies and the effect of the sedimentary cover were eliminated using cut-off wavelength of 10 km and geological and seismic information.We analysed the potential of preferential Butterworth filtering in a sensitivity study and applied the above mentioned approach to part of the Swiss molasses basin. Sensitivity analyses reveal that such sets of residual anomalies represents a pseudo-tomography revealing the distribution of different structures with depth. This finding allows for interpreting negative anomalies in terms of 3-D volumes. Best-fitting then permits determination of the most likely 3-D geometries of such basement structures. Our model fits both, geological observations and gravity: among 10 deep boreholes in the studied area, six reach the respective units and confirm our distribution of the negative (and positive) anomalies. The European Cenozoic Rift System hosts major temperature anomalies in Central Europe. In its central segment, the Upper Rhine Graben (URG), temperatures range from 75°C to nearly 150°C at a depth of 2000 m. Different hypotheses have been suggested to explain the localization of these anomalies. Our review and comprehensive interpretation of gravimetric and magnetic data, as well as neotectonic activity patterns, suggests that low-density, mostly magnetic and fractured granitic basement is systematically associated with major temperature anomalies. Further analyses provide insight into different heat transport processes contributing to the localization of these anomalies. Magnetic and gravity anomalies are known to represent lithological variations associated with the pre-Permian. We show their spatial relationship with positive temperature anomalies in the URG. Correlation between magnetics and temperature reveal a mean contribution of heat production to the temperature anomaly of about 10–15°C. A slightly higher mean value is obtained from correlation between gravity and temperature, which may be attributed to effects resulting from fracture porosity. The spatial relationship between temperature anomalies and neotectonic patterns indicates compressional shear and uplift regime for the major anomalies of the central segment of the URG. This is in agreement with different numerical models indicating free convection on fracture zones linked to faults. Our findings show that about 15–25% of the temperature anomaly can be attributed to variation in heat production. Hydrothermal circulation convection along faults, activated by the tectonic context, may explain the remaining 75–85% of the temperature anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The campus of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) contains several waste heat streams. In an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing thermal power consumption on the campus, researchers at the KIT are proposing a 'DeepStor' project, which will sequester waste heat from these streams in an underground reservoir during the summer months, when the heat is not required. The stored heat will then be reproduced in the winter, when the campus's thermal power demand is much higher. This paper contains a preliminary geochemical risk assessment for the operation of this subsurface, seasonal geothermal energy storage system. We used equilibrium thermodynamics to determine the potential phases and extent of mineral scale formation in the plant's surface infrastructure, and to identify possible precipitation, dissolution, and ion exchange reactions that may lead to formation damage in the reservoir. The reservoir in question is the Meletta Beds of the Upper Rhein Graben's Froidefontaine Formation. We modeled scale- and formation damage-causing reactions during six months of injecting 140 °C fluid into the reservoir during the summer thermal storage season and six months of injecting 80 °C fluid during the winter thermal consumption season. Overall, we ran the models for 5 years. Anhydrite and calcite are expected mineral scales during the thermal storage season (summer). Quartz is the predicted scale-forming mineral during the thermal consumption period (winter). Within ~20 m of the wellbores, magnesium and iron are leached from biotite; calcium and magnesium are leached from dolomite; and sodium, aluminum, and silica are leached from albite. These reactions lead to a net increase in both porosity and permeability in the wellbore adjacent region. At a distance of ~20–75 m from the wellbores, the leached ions recombine with the reservoir rocks to form a variety of clays, i.e., saponite, minnesotaite, and daphnite. These alteration products lead to a net loss in porosity and permeability in this zone. After each thermal storage and production cycle, the reservoir shows a net retention of heat, suggesting that the operation of the proposed DeepStor project could successfully store heat, if the geochemical risks described in this paper can managed. HT-ATES (high-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage) systems are a future option to shift large amounts of high-temperature excess heat from summer to winter using the deep underground. Among others, water-bearing reservoirs in former hydrocarbon formations show favorable storage conditions for HT-ATES locations. This study characterizes these reservoirs in the Upper Rhine Graben (URG) and quantifies their heat storage potential numerically. Assuming a doublet system with seasonal injection and production cycles, injection at 140 °C in a typical 70 °C reservoir leads to an annual storage capacity of up to 12 GWh and significant recovery efficiencies increasing up to 82% after ten years of operation. Our numerical modeling-based sensitivity analysis of operational conditions identifies the specific underground conditions as well as drilling configuration (horizontal/vertical) as the most influencing parameters. With about 90% of the investigated reservoirs in the URG transferable into HT-ATES, our analyses reveal a large storage potential of these well-explored oil fields. In summary, it points to a total storage capacity in depleted oil reservoirs of approximately 10 TWh a−1, which is a considerable portion of the thermal energy needs in this area.
