Chloride attack severely impacts the performance of reinforced concrete. The total and free chloride ion concentration (CIC) of self-compacting concrete (SCC) prepared with three supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) – fly ash (FA), blast furnace slag (BS) and silica fume (SF) – were measured by accelerated salt immersion tests. The apparent chloride diffusion coefficient (CDC) at any exposure time and erosion depth were calculated using the Boltzmann–Matano method. The influence of the type and content of SCM, the water–binder ratio (W/B) and the type of salt solution on CIC and CDC were investigated. Both the introduction of SCM and the reduction of W/B effectively reduced the CIC. The SCM that most effectively reduced CIC was SF, followed by BS and then FA. Free CIC was reduced to a greater degree than total CIC in FA and BS concrete, but the opposite was true for SF concrete. The presence of calcium chloride in salt solution increased total CIC while reducing free CIC. Apparent free CDC dropped over exposure time and initially increased with erosion depth but eventually stabilised. A model of apparent free CDC considering time–depth dependency was created, which shows that time reduction factors of CDC is greater in SCC containing SCM than in control SCC. A bridge failure can result in significant social, economic, and environmental problems; therefore, its reliability and risk management are essential. Bridges' system reliability and risks are governed mainly by their redundancy and robustness, which currently are not adequately included in most design code specifications. Thus, in this study, a comprehensive comparison between relevant importance, redundancy, and robustness indicators found in the literature with different levels of complexity is carried out. The indicators under analysis have been used separately in different studies but have never been addressed together. Therefore, this study presents a joint evaluation of deterministic, reliability- and risk-based indicators to evaluate the differences in interpretation and information provided by the indicators. The approach is exemplified by analyzing a prestressed concrete bridge subjected to continuous degradation due to chloride ingress. A procedure is implemented to couple a metamodel-based reliability approach with a Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA). Based on the analysis performed, the comparison between indicators showed how different interpretations can be obtained depending on the implemented approach. In this study, tension‐tension fatigue tests were conducted to investigate the residual stiffness degradation of carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. Different stress levels were used in the tests, and measurements of residual stiffness and the number of loading cycles were taken. Based on experimental data for CFRP tendons, a quantitative residual stiffness model was developed by modifying Yao's model. This model is applicable to various stress levels. To assess its accuracy and applicability, the predicted results of this model were compared with those of cited models from other researchers. The findings revealed a three‐stage degradation of residual stiffness in CFRP tendons under different stress levels. Furthermore, it was observed that the proportion of fatigue life accounted for by Stage III decreased with smaller stress ranges, while the proportion accounted for by Stage II increased. The proposed quantitative residual stiffness model was verified using both experimental and cited data. The construction of nuclear power plants necessitates careful consideration of the discharge and fixation of nuclear waste. Geopolymers are new cement-based materials (CBMs) with three-dimensional cage-like structures that enable effective nuclear waste fixation. In this work, the adsorption of radioactive caesium and strontium ions by sodium aluminosilicate hydrate (NASH) gel, the main component of geopolymers, was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations to obtain nanoscale insights into the ions' interactions with the gel. The formation of strong ion–oxygen bonds allowed both ions to be effectively adsorbed on the NASH surface, but the adsorption ratio of strontium ions (17.2%) was slightly lower than that of caesium ions (21.0%). Because strontium ions are divalent, they can form stronger electrostatic interactions with water molecules and chloride ions, which hinders their approach to the interface. For the same reason, the diffusion coefficient of strontium ions in solution is lower than that of caesium ions. These results provide new insights into the nuclear waste fixation capacity of NASH gel and guidance for the design of new CBMs for radioactive waste disposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The snow galleries along the Iron Ore railway line in northern Sweden have faced problems in recent years due to increasingly large snow loads, and several galleries have been damaged. These incidents motivated an evaluation of the maximum load supported by the galleries before collapse, which is presented in this study. In 2021, a monitoring system was installed in one of the main frames of two snow galleries built in the 1950s to follow up with temperature and displacements, including a trigger that sends out a warning message when a critical load is reached. A literature review on snow loads was performed, followed by calculations on snow distribution on the galleries based on the Eurocodes and National Swedish Standards. Finite element 2D and 3D models were created using AxisVM to accurately assess the efforts in the structural elements. Analysis and discussion are complemented by observations from site visits. It was concluded that the critical loads supported by the galleries are lower than the requirements of today's standards, but since secondary construction elements were damaged before the main frames reached their full capacity, no major collapse has yet taken place. The cobweb effect (load re-distribution between the neighboring elements in a 3D structure) influenced the behavior of the galleries in the 3D analysis and the capacity of the main frames proved to be significantly increased compared to the 2D assessment. Bridge inspections are relied heavily on visual inspection, and usually conducted within limited time windows, typically at night, to minimize their impact on traffic. This makes it difficult to inspect every meter of the structure, especially for large-scale bridges with hard-to-access areas, which creates a risk of missing serious defects or even safety hazards. This paper presents a new technique for the semi-automated damage detection in tunnel linings and bridges using a hybrid approach based on photogrammetry and deep learning. The first approach involves using photogrammetry to reconstruct a 3D model. It is shown that a model with sub-centimeter accuracy can be obtained after noise removal. However, noise removal also reduces the point cloud density, making the 3D point cloud unsuitable for quantification of small-scale damages such as fine cracks. Therefore, the captured images are also analyzed using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models to enable crack detection and segmentation. For this aim, in the second approach, the 3D model is generated by the output of CNN models to enable crack localization and quantification on 3D digital model. These two approaches were evaluated in separate case studies, showing that the proposed technique could be a valuable tool to assist human inspectors in detecting, localizing, and quantifying defects on concrete structures. The surge towards a sustainable future in the construction industry requires the use of bio‐based insulation materials as an alternative to conventional ones for improving energy efficiency in structures. In this article, the features of bio‐based insulation materials, including their thermal conductivities, moisture buffering value, fire performance, and life cycle evaluations are examined. It is clear from the review that pre‐ and post‐treatment of the bio‐based materials used for insulation materials optimize their properties. The life cycle analysis reveals a significant reduction in global warming potential (GWP) compared to conventional foams. In addition, it is envisaged that producing bio‐based insulation materials on a larger scale will further decrease the net GWP. A new bridge was built in Kalix, northern Sweden, to replace an existing prestressed concrete box‐girder bridge that had been in service for over 60 years. The old bridge had a total length of 283.6 m divided into five spans: 43.9 m, 47.0 m, 94.0 m, 47.0 m, and 43.9 m. It was constructed using the balanced cantilever method with segments having lengths of around 3.0 m. The need for replacement arose from recommendations extracted from an assessment of the old bridge's state and capacity. In addition to the construction of the new bridge, its replacement necessitated the creation and evaluation of demolition procedure for the existing bridge. This procedure had to be carefully designed to avoid damaging the new bridge and stability‐related issues but also to prevent debris from falling into the Kalix River, which is part of a Natura 2000 protected area. This paper discusses various issues considered while developing the demolition strategy, including the use of bed‐rock anchored tendons, intermediate support fixing at specific locations, and proper evaluation of position of the demolition equipment supported by the bridge, among others. As worldwide infrastructure is ageing, significant efforts have been paid to the development of strengthening techniques that will restore or increase the initial capacity of existing structures. Considering that it is expected that shear failure happens in a less ductile mode than that observed under bending actions, special attention has been devoted to shear strengthening methods. These methods included externally bonded fiber reinforced polymers (EB‐FRP), near‐surface mounted (NSM‐FRP) method, and the embedded trough‐section (ETS) technique, among others. In this paper, ETS method is used for the strengthening in shear of a reinforced concrete railway bridge located in Finland. The ETS method consists in the embedment of FRP or steel bars through predrilled holes into the concrete core. The bars are bonded to the concrete using adhesives. The paper includes a brief review of recent advances in the use of ETS and comparison with other available techniques, the description of the case study, instrumentation of the bars using fiber optic sensors (FOS) for strain monitoring, the procedure used for the installation of the bars in the field, and a preliminary analysis of the data collected. The Iron Ore Line is a railway in northern Sweden and Norway, crucial for iron ore transportation. Snow galleries safeguard this route, ensuring uninterrupted traffic for efficient operations. A snow gallery is a protective structure that shields roads and railways from heavy snowfall and avalanches. Reported damages to these structures caused by excessive snow loads have prompted an investigation to prevent further issues. This paper presents an analysis of the evolution of snow load calculations over time, though a comparison of Swedish design standards. The design snow loads required by current standards have increased up to 60% from the initial regulations, depending on the location of the structure. Besides, climate change is predicted to further increase snow loads due to more frequent winter precipitation, higher snow density, and extreme snowfall events. This analysis is part of a broader research project involving numerical simulations, live monitoring, and a digital twin monitoring system of some snow galleries in the Iron Ore Line. Traditional visual inspections of existing infrastructure have limitations such as safety risks, limited accuracy for subsurface defects, and subjective assessments. Modern inspection techniques like terrestrial laser scanning, closerange photogrammetry (CRP), and infrared scanning offer faster and more accurate data collection, allowing for more informative and precise descriptions of objects, while minimizing traffic disturbances often associated with visual inspections. In this paper, CPR, a non‐destructive survey technique for reconstructing 3D shapes from 2D images, is used for the inspection of five bridges in Northern Sweden. The surveys were performed under different weather conditions, using different data acquisition equipment and personnel with different levels of experience. The acquired images were used to create 3D models of the bridges and to evaluate the evolution of damages over time. Results showed that although better models were created when using equipment with higher specifications, cheap gear such as GoPro or cellphones can also be used for the cases in which a lower level of detail is required. Calcium silicate aluminate hydrate (C-A-S-H) is the main hydration product of cement mixed with industrial wastes. The purpose of this study is to understand the dynamic mechanical behavior and structural transformations of molecular-scale C-A-S-H induced by shock waves. Three C-A-S-H models with Al/Si ratios of 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2 are constructed and reactive molecular dynamics simulations are used to perform shock compressions with different shock velocities from 0.1 km/s to 3.6 km/s. The distributions of particle velocity, pressure, and density along the shock direction are calculated using the binning analysis method, allowing Hugoniot pressure-specific volume curves to be derived. The results reveal that shock waves may induce elastic, elastic-plastic, or shock Hugoniot responses in molecular-scale C-A-S-H, depending on the Al/Si ratio and the shock velocity. Below the Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL), higher Al/Si ratios cause the elastic wave to propagate farther due to the cross-linking effect of aluminate units. Above the HEL, higher Al/Si ratios give rise to a distinct two-wave structure characteristic comprising a plastic front and an elastic precursor. This characteristic becomes less pronounced as the shock velocity increases. Analysis of the molecular structural transformations of C-A-S-H revealed that the main atomic deformation behavior below the HEL involves a reduction of interatomic distances; above the HEL the main response is a densification of water molecules followed by a general collapse of the layered structure as the shock velocity increases. Common analytical assessment methods for concrete dams are unlikely to predict material fracture in the dam body because of the assumption of rigid body behavior and uniform- or linear stress distribution along a predetermined failure surface. Hence, probabilistic non-linear finite element analysis, calibrated from scale model tests, was implemented in this study to investigate the impact of concrete material parameters (modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, compressive strength, fracture energy) on the ultimate capacity of scaled model dams. The investigated dam section has two types of large asperities, located near the downstream and/or upstream end of the rock–concrete interface. These large-scale asperities significantly increased the interface roughness. Post-processing of the numerical simulations showed interlocking between the buttress and the downstream asperity leading to fracture of the buttress with the capacity being determined mainly by the tensile strength of the buttress material. The capacity of a model with an asperity near the upstream side, with lower inclination, was less dependent on the material parameters of the buttress as failure occurred by sliding along the interface, even with inferior material parameters. Results of this study show that material parameters of the concrete in a dam body can govern the load capacity of the dam granted that significant geometrical variations in the rock–concrete interface exists. The material parameters of the dam body and their impact on the capacity with respect to the failure mechanism that developed for some of the studied models are not commonly considered to be decisive for the load capacity. Also, no analytical assessment method for this type of failure exists. The mutual inhibition effect of transport of sulfate and chloride in concrete specimens was determined in a macroscopic experiment. A higher concentration of sulfate has a better inhibition effect on chloride transport and the opposite is also true. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed to explore the effect of concentration (0, 0.5, 1.0 mol/l) on the transport of mixed solutions (sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4)) in the main hydration products of aluminium-doped cement-based materials (i.e. calcium–aluminium–silicate–hydrate (C–A–S–H) gel). Sulfate was found to promote the aggregation of other ions to form ion clusters, which can reduce the effective width of the channel entrance and create a 'necking' effect, thus reducing the overall transport rate of the solution. With the increase of sodium chloride concentration, sulfate ions in the mixed solution can adsorb more Na+ and Cl− ions, and then form larger ion clusters to block the nanopores. Moreover, with increasing sodium sulfate concentration, a higher amount of sulfate ions existing in the solution makes it possible to form more ion clusters. In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the effects of temperature on the transport of chloride and sulfate in the nanopores of aluminum-doped cement-based materials (i.e., CASH gels) exposed to aqueous solutions of NaCl and Na2SO4 at 283, 293, 303, 333, and 363 K. It is shown that high temperatures increase the initial transport rates of water molecules and ions while weakening the hydration layer around ions. This increases the probability of ion–ion and ion–substrate contact and thus makes ions more likely to cluster in solution and be captured by the substrate. Both cluster formation and substrate capture can significantly restrict the free movement of ions in solution and thus gradually reduce the ion transport rate. In addition, since sulfate ions have four oxygen atoms that can capture other ions, large ion clusters form more readily in Na2SO4 solution than in NaCl solution. The capture of these large ion clusters at the interface can cause a "necking" phenomenon that hinders the subsequent transport of water molecules and ions into the nanopore. These results provide a nanoscale basis for designing aluminum-doped cement-based materials with enhanced durability at high temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the modern age of nanotechnology, the discovery of graphene has opened up the way to study and develop of several novel 2D materials. The unique physical and chemical properties of 2D materials have enhanced their research, making them superior to the commercial bulk materials used in various applications. Efforts have been made in the current study to present an overview of the intrinsic properties of these materials. Furthermore, synthesis and applications are also reviewed and discussed. Finally, the future outlook of 2D materials is discussed to enhance the research and performance of these materials, which can result in broader applications benefitting the electrical and electronics industries and society. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main hydration product of cementitious materials, often experiencing complex stress conditions in practical applications. Therefore, reactive molecular dynamics methods were used to investigate the mechanical response of the atomistic structure of C-S-H under various uniaxial and biaxial strain conditions. The results of uniaxial simulations show that C-S-H exhibits mechanical anisotropy and tension–compression asymmetry due to its layered atomistic structure. By fitting the stress–strain data, a stress–strain relationship that accurately represents the elastoplasticity of C-S-H was developed. The biaxial yield surface obtained from biaxial simulations was ellipsoidal, again reflecting the anisotropy and asymmetry of C-S-H. Four yield criteria (von Mises, Drucker–Prager, Hill, and Liu–Huang–Stout) were further investigated, and it was found that the Liu–Huang–Stout criterion can effectively capture all the major features of the yield surface. During a uniaxial tensile process in the z direction, multi-crack propagation was observed, which was aggravated and weakened by y direction tensile and compressive strains respectively. The results of chemical bond analyses revealed that, for different strain conditions, the CaW–OS and CaS–OS bonds play different roles in resisting deformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early-age frost damage to concrete used in winter construction or in cold environments negatively affects the development of the hydration process and the performance of the concrete, thereby reducing the service life of the building structure. Experimental research was carried out to investigate the compressive strength, resistance to chloride penetration and resistance to freeze–thaw of concrete specimens subjected to early-age freeze–thaw cycles (E-FTCs). The effects that different pre-curing times of concrete and mineral admixtures have on the properties of early-age frost-affected concrete were also analyzed. Results show that the earlier the freeze–thaw cycles (FTCs), the poorer the later-age performance. Later-age water-curing cannot completely restore the damage that E-FTCs do to concrete. In the same conditions used in this study, the effects of E-FTCs on later-age mechanical and durability properties of ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPC) are small. The incorporation of fly ash significantly reduces the resistance to freeze–thaw of concrete during early-age and later-age. The presence of silica fumes has an adverse effect on the later-age resistance to freeze–thaw. In general, the recovery percentage of later-age durability indexes of concrete subjected to E-FTCs is lower than that of compressive strength. The global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has rapidly increased the demand for facemasks as a measure to reduce the rapid spread of the pathogen. Throughout the pandemic, some countries such as Italy had a monthly demand of ca. 90 million facemasks. Domestic mask manufacturers are capable of manufacturing 8 million masks each week, although the demand was 40 million per week during March 2020. This dramatic increase has contributed to a spike in the generation of facemask waste. Facemasks are often manufactured with synthetic materials that are non‐biodegradable, and their increased usage and improper disposal are raising environmental concerns. Consequently, there is a strong interest for developing biodegradable facemasks made with for example, renewable nanofibres. A range of natural polymer‐based nanofibres has been studied for their potential to be used in air filter applications. This review article examines potential natural polymer‐based nanofibres along with their filtration and antimicrobial capabilities for developing biodegradable facemask that will promote a cleaner production. 3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) is considered as a flexible manufacturing method with the potential for substantial innovations in fabricating geometrically complicated structured polymers, metals, and ceramics parts. Among them, polymeric composites show versatility for applications in various fields, such as constructions, microelectronics and biomedical. However, the poor resistance of these materials against fire must be considered due to their direct relation to human life conservation and safety. In this article, the recent advances in the fire behavior of 3D-printed polymeric composites are reviewed. The article describes the recently developed methods for improving the flame retardancy of 3D-printed polymeric composites. Consequently, the improvements in the fire behavior of 3D-printed polymeric materials through the change in formulation of the composites are discussed. The article is novel in the sense that it is one of the first studies to provide an overview regarding the flammability characteristics of 3D-printed polymeric materials, which will further incite research interests to render AM-based materials fire-resistant. This investigation is carried out to understand the effects of water absorption on the mechanical properties of hybrid phenol formaldehyde (PF) composite fabricated with Areca Fine Fibres (AFFs) and Calotropis Gigantea Fibre (CGF). Hybrid CGF/AFF/PF composites were manufactured using the hand layup technique at varying weight percentages of fibre reinforcement (25, 35 and 45%). Hybrid composite having 35 wt.% showed better mechanical properties (tensile strength ca. 59 MPa, flexural strength ca. 73 MPa and impact strength 1.43 kJ/m2) under wet and dry conditions as compared to the other hybrid composites. In general, the inclusion of the fibres enhanced the mechanical properties of neat PF. Increase in the fibre content increased the water absorption, however, after 120 h of immersion, all the composites attained an equilibrium state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Upgrading existing buildings to new functional requirements may require new openings that can weaken the structure, prompting the need for strengthening. In such cases traditional strengthening solutions, such as creating a reinforced concrete (RC) or steel frame around the opening, imply long-term restrictions in the use of the structure compared to solutions that use externally bonded composites. Two fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites were used in this study to restore the capacity of panels with newly created door type openings to that of a solid panel. Five half-scale RC panels acting as two-way action compression members were tested to failure. Two full-field optical deformation measurement systems were used to monitor and analyze the global structural response of each tested panel (i.e., crack pattern, failure mechanism, and displacement/strain fields). The performance of existing design methods for RC panels has been assessed in comparison with the experimental results. The capacity of strengthened panels with small openings (450 x 1,050 mm) was entirely restored to that of the solid panel. However, for panels with large openings (900 x 1,050 mm), only 75% of the solid panel's capacity was restored. The capacity of the strengthened panels was about 175 and 150% higher compared to that of reference panels with small and large openings, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper was to study the contribution of shear deformation in reinforced concrete (RC) shear-critical beams. A 2D concrete material model based on smeared fixed crack was presented and incorporated into a commercial finite element (FE) software. A method of calculating shear and flexure deformation separately out of total deformation in the shear span was presented and implemented into the FE analysis. Several experiments of RC shear-critical beams were simulated and good agreement between the experimental and numerical results was obtained in terms of total deformation, flexure deformation, shear deformation and crack patterns. The results show that after shear cracking, the contribution of shear deformation to total deformation increases rapidly. The shear span-to-depth ratio, the longitudinal reinforcement, the shear reinforcement and the load level could be the critical factor to influence the contribution of shear deformation. It appears that for RC shear-critical beams without shear reinforcement, the deformational behaviour is governed by flexure deformation. However, for RC beams with shear reinforcement, the contribution of shear deformation is not negligible after shear cracks develop. Old structures are frequently modified to comply with current living standards and/or legislation. Such modifications may include the addition of new windows or doors and paths for ventilation and heating systems, all of which require openings to be cut into structural walls. However, effects of the required openings are not sufficiently understood. Thus, the objective of the work reported here was to analyze openings' effects on the axial strength of large concrete wall panels. Three half-scaled walls with two opening configurations, corresponding to small and large door openings, were subjected to a uniformly distributed axial load with a small eccentricity. The results indicate that the 25 and 50% reductions in cross-sectional area of the solid wall caused by introducing the small and large openings reduced the load-carrying capacity by nearly 36 and 50%, respectively. The failure progression was captured using digital image correlation technique and the results indicated involvement of a plate mechanism rather than uniaxial behavior as adopted in current design codes. A reinforced concrete railway trough bridge in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, was strengthened in bending with rods of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer and loaded to failure. The aim was to test and calibrate methods developed in the European Research Project ‘Sustainable Bridges’ regarding assessment and strengthening of existing bridges. A steel beam was placed in the middle of one of the two spans and was pulled downwards. Failure was reached at an applied load of 11.7 MN. It was initiated by a bond failure caused by a combined action of shear, torsion as well as bending after yielding in the longitudinal steel reinforcement and the stirrups. The bond failure led to a redistribution of the internal forces from the tensile reinforcement to the stirrups, causing the final failure. The computer models developed to simulate the loading process were improved step by step from linear shell models to more detailed models. Full-scale failure tests are rarely performed on structures, primarily due to their high costs and the lack of suitable test objects. This article reports the results of a 'test-to-failure' performed using a real bridge. The results obtained in such tests are valuable for assessing analytical models, updating finite element models and investigating the real behaviour of structures. The specific intention in these experiments was to study the shear failure of the bridge, which is a less well-understood mode of failure than is bending. To this end, it was necessary to strengthen the bridge using near-surface-mounted reinforcements made of carbon fibre–reinforced polymer bars in order to prevent bending failure. The bridge was heavily monitored during the test, using both traditional sensors such as electrical strain gauges and linear variable differential transducers alongside new monitoring systems such as fibre-optic sensors, strain rosette linear variable differential transducers and a novel photographic monitoring system. This article presents the photographic strain measurements and describes the use of the photographic tools in monitoring and characterizing the behaviour of the failure zone during the full-scale test. The strains measured using the photographic method were found to agree well with those measured using classical strain gauges. In addition, the strain contour plots generated using the photographic method provided crucial insights into the strains within the bridge's failure zone. In this paper the trustworthiness of the existing theory for predicting the fiber-reinforced plastic contribution to the shear resistance of reinforced concrete beams is discussed. The most well-known shear models for external bonded reinforcement are presented, commented on, and compared with an extensive experimental database. The database contains the results from more than 200 tests performed in different research institutions across the world. The results of the comparison are not very promising and the use of the additional principle in the actual shear design equations should be questioned. The large scatter between the predicted values of different models and experimental results is of real concern bearing in mind that some of the models are used in present design codes. Filled hybrid composites are widely used in various structural applications where machining is critical. Hence, it is essential to understand the performance of the fibre composites' machining behaviour. As such, a new hybrid structural composite was fabricated with redmud as filler and sisal fibre as reinforcement in polyester matrix. The composite was then tested for its drilling performance. A comprehensive drilling experiment was conducted using Taguchi L27 orthogonal array. The effect of the drill tool point angle, the cutting speed, the feed rate on thrust force, delamination, and burr formation were analysed for producing quality holes. The significance of each parameter was analysed, and the experimental outcomes revealed some important findings in the context of the drilling behaviour of sisal fibre/polyester composites with redmud as a filler. Spindle speed contributed 39% in affecting the thrust force, while the feed rate had the maximum influence of ca. 38% in affecting delamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study is aimed at investigating the effect of hybridisation on Kevlar/E-Glass based epoxy composite laminate structures. Composites with 3 mm thickness and 16 layers of fibre (14 layers of E-glass centred and 2 outer layers of Kevlar) were fabricated using compression moulding technique. The fibre orientation of the Kevlar layers had 3 variations (0, 45 and 60°), whereas the E-glass fibre layers were maintained at 0° orientation. Tensile, flexural, impact (Charpy and Izod), interlaminar shear strength and ballistic impact tests were conducted. The ballistic test was performed using a gas gun with spherical hard body projectiles at the projectile velocity of 170 m/s. The pre- and post-impact velocities of the projectiles were measured using a high-speed camera. The energy absorbed by the composite laminates was further reported during the ballistic test, and a computerised tomographic scan was used to analyse the impact damage. The composites with 45° fibre orientation of Kevlar fibres showed better tensile strength, flexural strength, Charpy impact strength, and energy absorption. The energy absorbed by the composites with 45° fibre orientation was 58.68 J, which was 14% and 22% higher than the 0° and 60° oriented composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The enhanced carbon footprint of the construction sector has created the need for CO2 emission control and mitigation. CO2 emissions in the construction sector are influenced by a variety of factors, including raw material preparation, cement production, and, most notably, the construction process. Thus, using biobased constituents in cement could reduce CO2 emissions. However, biobased constituents can degrade and have a negative impact on cement performance. Recently, carbonised biomass known as biochar has been found to be an effective partial replacement for cement. Various studies have reported improved mechanical strength and thermal properties with the inclusion of biochar in concrete. To comprehend the properties of biochar-added cementitious materials, the properties of biochar and their effect on concrete need to be examined. This review provides a critical examination of the mechanical and thermal properties of biochar and biochar-added cementitious materials. The study also covers biochar's life cycle assessment and economic benefits. Overall, the purpose of this review article is to provide a means for researchers in the relevant field to gain a deeper understanding of the innate properties of biochar imparted into biochar-added cementitious materials for property enhancement and reduction of CO2 emissions. Functionalized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were used in the present investigation to enhance the fracture behavior of carbon epoxy composite in order to prevent delamination if any crack propagates in the resin rich area. The main intent of this investigation was to analyze the efficiency of PAN nanofiber as a reinforcing agent for the carbon fiber-based epoxy structural composite. The composites were fabricated with stacked unidirectional carbon fibers and the PAN powder was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and then used as reinforcement. The fabricated composites' fracture behavior was analyzed through a double cantilever beam test and the energy release rate of the composites was investigated. The neat PAN and functionalized PAN-reinforced samples had an 18% and a 50% increase in fracture energy, respectively, compared to the control composite. In addition, the samples reinforced with functionalized PAN nanofibers had 27% higher interlaminar strength compared to neat PAN-reinforced composite, implying more efficient stress transformation as well as stress distribution from the matrix phase (resin-rich area) to the reinforcement phase (carbon/phase) of the composites. The enhancement of fracture toughness provides an opportunity to alleviate the prevalent issues in laminated composites for structural operations and facilitate their adoption in industries for critical applications. Natural fibre-based composites are replacing traditional materials in a wide range of structural applications that are used in different environments. Natural fibres suffer from thermal shocks, which affects the use of these composites in cold environment. Considering these, a goal was set in the present research to investigate the impact of cryogenic conditions on natural fibre composites. Composites were developed using polyester as matrix and jute-fibre and waste Teak saw-dust as reinforcement and filler, respectively. The effects of six parameters, viz., density of saw-dust, weight ratio of saw-dust, grade of woven-jute, number of jute layers, duration of cryogenic treatment of composite and duration of alkaline treatment of fibres on the mechanical properties of the composite was evaluated with an objective to maximise hardness, tensile, impact and flexural strengths. Taguchi method was used to design the experiments and response-surface methodology was used to model, predict and plot interactive surface plots. Results indicated that the duration of cryogenic treatment had a significant effect on mechanical properties, which was better only up to 60 min. The models were found to be statistically significant. The study concluded that saw-dust of density 300 kg/m3 used as a filler with a weight ratio of 13 wt.% and a reinforcement of a single layer of woven-jute-fibre mat of grade 250 gsm subjected to alkaline treatment for 4 h in a composite that has undergone 45 min of cryogenic treatment presented an improvement of 64% in impact strength, ca. 21% in flexural strength, ca. 158% in tensile strength and ca. 28% in hardness. The issue of sustainability is a growing concern and has led to many environmentally friendly chemical productions through a great intensification of the use of biomass conversion processes. Thermal conversion of biomass is one of the most attractive tools currently used, and pyrolytic treatments represent the most flexible approach to biomass conversion. In this scenario, microwave-assisted pyrolysis could be a solid choice for the production of multi-chemical mixtures known as bio-oils. Bio-oils could represent a promising new source of high-value species ranging from bioactive chemicals to green solvents. A finite element (FE) model was calibrated using the data obtained from a full-scale test to failure of a 50 year old reinforced concrete (RC) railway bridge. The model was then used to assess the effectiveness of various strengthening schemes to increase the load-carrying capacity of the bridge. The bridge was a two-span continuous single-track trough bridge with a total length of 30 m, situated in Örnsköldsvik in northern Sweden. It was tested in situ as the bridge had been closed following the construction of a new section of the railway line. The test was planned to evaluate and calibrate models to predict the load-carrying capacity of the bridge and assess the strengthening schemes originally developed by the European research project called Sustainable bridges. The objective of the test was to investigate shear failure, rather than bending failure for which good calibrated models are already available. To that end, the bridge was strengthened in flexure before the test using near-surface mounted square section carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars. The ultimate failure mechanism turned into an interesting combination of bending, shear, torsion, and bond failures at an applied load of 11.7 MN (2,630 kips). A computer model was developed using specialized software to represent the response of the bridge during the test. It was calibrated using data from the test and was then used to calculate the actual capacity of the bridge in terms of train loading using the current Swedish load model which specifies a 330 kN (74 kips) axle weight. These calculations show that the unstrengthened bridge could sustain a load 4.7 times greater than the current load requirements (which is over six times the original design loading), whilst the strengthened bridge could sustain a load 6.5 times greater than currently required.
