- Abstract
This article analyses the impact and visibility of scholarly journals in the humanities that are publishing in the national languages in Finland, Norway and Spain. Three types of publishers are considered: commercial publishers, scholarly society as publisher, and research organizations as publishers. Indicators of visibility and impact were obtained from Web of Science, SCOPUS, Google Metrics, Scimago Journal Rank and Journal Citation Report. The findings compiled show that in Spain the categories "History and Archaeology" and "Language and Literature" account for almost 70% of the journals analysed, while the other countries offer a more homogeneous distribution. In Finland, the scholarly society publisher is predominant, in Spain, research organization as publishers, mostly universities, have a greater weighting, while in Norway, the commercial publishers take centre stage. The results show that journals from Finland and Norway will have reduced possibilities in terms of impact and visibility, since the vernacular language appeals to a smaller readership. Conversely, the Spanish journals are more attractive for indexing in commercial databases. Distribution in open access ranges from 64 to 70% in Norwegian and Finish journals, and to 91% in Spanish journals. The existence of DOI range from 31 to 41% in Nordic journals to 60% in Spanish journals and has a more widespread bearing on the citations received in all three countries (journals with DOI and open access are cited more frequently). The effects of economic incentives on research have been widely debated in the literature. Some authors deem them to have no or even an adverse impact, particularly, if they are perceived as irrelevant to or an attempt to control researcher activity, whilst others believe they enhance research productivity by inducing new habits such as international collaboration or publication in high-impact journals. In 2007, the Carlos III University of Madrid introduced bonuses associated with research merits to reward research and educational excellence. The policy aims to enhance the quantity and quality of the institution's scholarly publications. This study analyses whether and to what extent the new policy has had a potential effect on scientific output, impact, and visibility. Scientific activity indicators between 1991 and 2018 were analysed and a state-space model was used to establish possible scenarios (pre- and post-bonus periods) and 3 year predictions. Further to the findings, despite weak growth in researcher staff size, the number of papers rose during the period slightly more than in the pre-bonus simulation. The number of first-quartile papers also rose substantially, attesting to higher impact and visibility of the university's research. Greater internationalization was also observed. The incentives were found to be highly suggestive of a change in university researchers' publication habits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study is to detect scientific activities in the field of "water resources management" that include citizen science methods, using a bibliometric approach. The analysis aims at supporting the start of a new science shop based at the University of Brescia, Italy, in the framework of the European SciShops project. As the backdrop for science shops and community-based participatory research initiatives, citizen science is the focus of an increasing number of local, national and international activities, many of which are reported in the scientific literature available in the Web of Science. The results show that studies and publications on this topic, with a participatory perspective, are increasing. Australia, The Netherlands and Spain have a higher production than expected. The scarcity of Italian studies, especially on sustainable urban drainage, shows a promising field of work for future activities of the new science shop at Brescia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The characteristics of the production and dissemination of scientific activity in social sciences and humanities make such endeavours less visible than other areas in international databases. The same circumstances also limit the evaluation of journals, researchers and institutions and complicate the quality-based comparison of scientific-scholarly journals. This study presents a methodology developed in order to classify the Spanish journals of social science and humanities. With the aim of considering national journals in research activity evaluation processes, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) has sponsored and coordinated the development of a classification that allows journals that have obtained the FECYT Quality Seal to be ranked. For this purpose, a model with two dimensions (impact and visibility) based on quantitative criteria has been carried out. To obtain indicators in each of these dimensions, databases such as the Science Citation Index, the Social Science Citation Index, the Arts & Humanities Citation Index and the Emerging Sources Citation Index from the Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, SciELO, Google Metrics and the Information Matrix for the Analysis of Journals are used as sources of information. Spanish evaluation agencies have recently announced the implementation of this evaluation methodology in various disciplines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study is aim to determine significant changes and trends in neuroscience literature concerning Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) from 2000 to 2017. This article encourage researchers to help identify perhaps the most influential studies and combine detailed evidence into study-considered higher education. To our knowledge and understanding, almost no study found alterations in neuroscientific literature during the last decade in Turkey. In this study, the main aim is to present a science map of "Neuroscience literature", is a growing field of research in Turkey. This study explores maps of scientific publications related to research in Neuroscience that accuracy of clustering and classification of scientific fields is enhanced by incorporation of algorithms and main bibliometric analysis. Data were extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) database and matched with PubMed database via PubMed ID. Only articles published in journals classified under the Web of science category (WC) "Neurosciences" over the period of interest were included. MeSH term, abstract fields and references of each included publication were extracted and analyzed via Bibliotools software to identify recurring terms with high relative citation scores. MeSH term maps were produced for publications over the study period to illustrate the extent of co-occurrence, and the impact of terms was evaluated based on their relative citation scores. To further describe the recent research priority or "hot spots," MeSH terms, Journals, authors with the highest relative citation scores were identified annually. We focused on two successive periods: in 2000–2007 there are 1807 publications in WoS and 1510 publications in the bibliographic coupling (BC). 1291 publications gathered in 16 top clusters and 1103 publications gathered in 47 subtop clusters. In 2008–2017: there are 3668 publications in WoS, 3312 publications in the BC network. 2924 publications gathered in 20 top clusters and 2500 publications gathered in 87 subtop clusters. In the corpus description interface, interactive tools are used to explore the nature of the two studied corpora by listing MeSH terms, references, categories, authors, journals, institutions, countries, etc. by frequency of use. In the BC interface, interactive tools are used to explore the multiple dimensions of the topics (or clusters) unveiled by our analysis. The two periods were studied independently, and although we use matching colors for topics that obviously correspond to one another from one-time period to another. Study how economic parameters affect positions in the Academic Ranking of World Universities' top 500 published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Graduate School of Education in countries/regions with listed higher education institutions. The methodology used capitalises on the multi-variate characteristics of the data analysed. The multi-colinearity problem posed is solved by running principal components prior to regression analysis, using both classical (OLS) and robust (Huber and Tukey) methods. Our results revealed that countries/regions with long ranking traditions are highly competitive. Findings also showed that some countries/regions such as Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, and Italy, had a larger number of universities in the top positions than predicted by the regression model. In contrast, for Japan, a country where social and economic performance is high, the number of ARWU universities projected by the model was much larger than the actual figure. In much the same vein, countries/regions that invest heavily in education, such as Japan and Denmark, had lower than expected results. Using data from only one ranking is a limitation of this study, but the methodology used could be useful to other global rankings. The results provide good insights for policy makers. They indicate the existence of a relationship between research output and the number of universities per million inhabitants. Countries/regions, which have historically prioritised higher education, exhibited highest values for indicators that compose the rankings methodology; furthermore, minimum increase in welfare indicators could exhibited significant rises in the presence of their universities on the rankings. This study is well defined and the result answers important questions about characteristics of countries/regions and their higher education system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The world-wide popularity of university rankings has spurred the debate about the quality and performance of higher education systems and has had a considerable impact on global society in light of the internationalisation of higher education. While useful for policy makers, such rankings also furnish information on an institution's 'prestige', which may in turn contribute to more effective resource capture (students, funding, projects). Certain university profiles and missions may prevent many universities from climbing to higher positions, however. One important question in this regard is: how many of a country's universities can stand at the top of international rankings? The present article attempts to answer this question on the grounds of a study of the Spanish higher education system, and more specifically of an institutional alliance consisting of four high quality universities. A series of research activity indicators drawn from the IUNE Observatory are used to compare this alliance to leading Spanish and international universities and explore whether their visibility and consequently their position in international rankings would be enhanced if they were able to appear under a joint identity. This prospective study also addresses a series of strategies that the Spanish higher education system might implement to successfully rise to the challenges posed by future scenarios. Background: The purpose of this study is to analyse the trends in scientific research on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies by applying bibliometric tools to the scientific literature published between 1973 and 2002. Methods: The data for the study were obtained from Medline database, in order to determine the volume of scientific output in the above period, the countries involved, the type of document and the trends in the subject matters addressed. The period 1973-2002 was divided in three sub-periods. Results: We observed a significant growth in scientific production. The percentage of increase is 871.7 from 1973 to 2002. This is more evident since 1991 and particularly in the 1996-2001 period. The countries found to have the highest output were the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France and Germany. The evolution in the subject matters was almost constant in the three sub-periods in which the study was divided. In the first and second sub-periods, the subject matters of greatest interest were more general, i.e Nervous system or Nervous system diseases, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Scrapie, and Chemicals and Drugs, but in the last sub-period, some changes were observed because the Prion-related matters had the greatest presence. Collaboration among authors is small from 1973 to 1992, but increases notably in the third sub-period, and also the number of authors and clusters formed. Some of the authors, like Gajdusek or Prusiner, appear in the whole period. Conclusion: The study reveals a very high increase in scientific production. It is related also with the beginnings of research on bovine spongiform encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, with the establishment of progressive collaboration relationships and a reflection of public health concerns about this problem. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role that the degree of curricular specialization in academic disciplines plays in connection with labour market demand for graduates in the respective areas. The curricula of three conventional social science disciplines for which degrees are awarded by the Carlos III University of Madrid: the general degree in Library Science, the Bachelor of Arts degree in Information Science and the Bachelor of Science degree in Economics are compared and analyzed in terms of the job offers received for their respective graduates from a series of industries. The results of the multivariate analysis conducted, based on the multidimensional indicators identified, reveal greater subject variability in the former two. In other words, the curricula for these two degrees are of a broader nature, whereas the curriculum for the degree in Economics is more specialized, with content covering a smaller number of areas. The outcome is a wider diversity of job offers for graduates in Economics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the validity, from the educational standpoint, of a methodological proposal for teaching bibliometrics as a part of the library and information science curriculum. The emphasis in this approach is on the use of readily available software, modularly integrated to facilitate full automation of the data gathering and analysis processes, as well as to obtain indicators. This methodology has been in place since 1996 as part of the curricula for the associate degree in Library and Information Science and the bachelor's degree in Documentation awarded by the Carlos III University of Madrid. - Abstract
This paper analyses the research activity conducted by Puerto Rican scientists in science and technology in the period 1990 to 1998. The Science Citation Index (SCI) database was used to analyse scientific production by geographic area, type of insittution, document typology, language coverage, visibility of publications, subjects addressed and collaboration between local and international authors and institutions. Scientific production was observed to nearly double over the period studied and found to be concentrated in the academic sector, primarily in the city of San Juan, specifically in the University of Puerto Rico's Rio Piedras, Medical Sciences and Mayagüez campuses. Puerto Rican scientific production in the period studied was greater than in any other Caribbean country and the sixth largest in all of Latin America. Papers are mainly published in highly visible journals and scientific articles are the vehicle most commonly used to reach the scientific community. Co-operation indices between authors and institutions are high and the principal areas in which research is published are Medicine, Chemistry, Life Sciences and Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
For its scope and the breadth of its available resources, the university system is one of the keys to implementing and propagating policies, with sustainability policies being among them. Building on sustainability performance in universities, this study aimed to: Identify the procedures deployed by universities to measure sustainability; detect the strengths and weaknesses of the Spanish university system (SUS) sustainability practice; analyse the SUS contributions to sustainability-related Research, Development and Innovation (R&D+I); and assess the efficacy of such practices and procedures as reported in the literature. The indicators of scientific activity were defined by applying scientometric techniques to analyse the journal (Web of Science) and European project (CORDIS) databases, along with reports issued by national institutions. The findings showed that measuring sustainability in the SUS is a very recent endeavour and that one of the strengths is the university community's engagement with the ideal. Nonetheless, high performance is still elusive in most of the items analysed. Whereas universities account for nearly 90 % of the Spanish papers published in the WoS subject category, Green and Sustainable Science and Technology, their contribution to research projects is meagre. A divide still exists in the SUS between policies and results, although the gap has been narrowing in recent years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
