Vaccination is a promising strategy to control the ongoing pandemic; however, solid organ recipients tend to develop a weaker immune response to vaccination. Anti‐spike SARS‐CoV‐2 antibodies titers were measured 2–4 weeks post‐vaccination completion in 131 KT patients without previous infection. Demographic, clinical, and laboratorial parameters were analyzed to identify which factors contributed to seroconversion. Factors that influenced seroconversion, that occurred in 76 patients (58%), were longer time post‐transplant, immunosuppression without an antiproliferative drug and vaccination with mRNA vaccines. Patients who received mRNA vaccines had significantly higher rates of seroconversion compared with adenovirus vector vaccines (67% vs 33%, P <.001) and higher anti‐spike IgG titers. These findings reinforce the need to discuss the vaccination strategy in this population, including a third dose with a mRNA vaccine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reactive dyes, such as Procion Yellow, Procion Red, and Procion Blue, were simultaneously determined in aqueous ternary solutions using derivative cathodic stripping voltammetry following adsorption on a hanging mercury drop electrode. An electrochemical cell containing Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 8 was used as the supporting electrolyte. The following experimental conditions were established: −0.100 V deposition potential, 80 s deposition time, 50 mV pulse amplitude, 50 mV s−1 scan rate, and 0.40 mm2 maximum mercury drop size. A linear response was observed over the 0.630 × 10−3 to 1.050, 1.441 × 10−3 to 1.572, and 0.198 to 1.570 mg l−1 ranges for Procion Yellow, Procion Red, and Procion Blue respectively. The detection limits were 0.210 × 10−3, 0.480 × 10−3, and 0.066 mg l−1 respectively, with a relative standard deviation ( n = 3) of 1.22%. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by derivative spectrophotometry, certifying the results as a function of proximity. All results were similar, indicating that derivative cathodic stripping voltammetry may be efficiently applied for the simultaneous determination of textile dyes in aqueous ternary solutions. The goal of this study was to investigate the activity of the coagulant extracted from the cactus Opuntia ficus- indica (OFI) in the process of coagulation/flocculation of textile effluents. Preliminary tests of a kaolinite suspension achieved maximum turbidity removal of 95 % using an NaCl extraction solution. Optimization assays were conducted with actual effluents using the response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box-Behnken experimental design. The responses of the variables FeCl, dosage, cactus dosage, and pH in the removal of COD and turbidity from both effluents were investigated. The optimum conditions determined for jeans washing laundry effluent were the following: FeCl 160 mg L, cactus dosage 2.60 mg L, and pH 5.0. For the fabric dyeing effluent, the optimum conditions were the following: FeCl 640 mg L, cactus dosage 160 mg L, and pH 6.0. Investigation of the effects of the storage time and temperature of the cactus O. ficus- indica showed that coagulation efficiency was not significantly affected for storage at room temperature for up to 4 days. Textile industry wastes raise a great concern due to their strong coloration and toxicity. The objective of the present work was to characterize the degradation and mineralization of textile effluents by advanced oxidative processes using either TiO2 or TiO2/H2O2 and to monitor the toxicity of the products formed during 6-h irradiation in relation to that of the in natura effluent. The results demonstrated that the TiO2/H2O2 association was more efficient in the mineralization of textile effluents than TiO2, with high mineralized ion concentrations (NH4+, NO3-, and SO42-) and significantly decreased organic matter ratios (represented by the chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon). The toxicity of the degradation products after 4-h irradiation to Artemia salina L. was not significant (below 10 %). However, the TiO2/H2O2 association produced more toxicity under irradiation than the TiO2 system, which was attributed to the increased presence of oxidants in the first group. Comparatively, the photogenerated products of both TiO2 and the TiO2/H2O2 association were less toxic than the in natura effluent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The accumulation of lead (Pb) in tilapias Oreochromis niloticus, acclimatized in cement tanks, and fed once a day with pellets of commercial food with lead nitrate, was investigated by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWV). The head (including head bones, proteins, and brain) was the main target of lead uptake by tilapias, with a small amount in muscle tissue. A high concentration of Pb was found in feces which indicated low absorption by the organism when fed with high Pb concentration. The protective effects of zinc (Zn) against the Pb poisoning, the accumulation of Pb in the heads of the fishes of 107.8 ± 3.1 mg kg-1 and in the viscera of 57.1 ± 2.9 mg kg-1 with consequent decrease of calcium (Ca) concentration, were observed. In spite of the experimental time of 16 months and higher Pb concentration in the dietary food of 320 mg kg-1, no death of tilapias was observed due to the protective action of Zn.
