A biometric system provides automatic identification of an individual based on a unique feature or characteristic possessed by the individual. Iris recognition is regarded as the most reliable and accurate biometric identification system available. An approach for accurate Biometric Recognition and Identification of Human Iris Patterns using Neural Network has been illustrated by gopikrishnan et. al. It has been concluded by Yingzi Du et. al that the partial iris portion of the iris pattern describes the uniqueness and the pupil has no direct effect on the accuracy of the biometric recognition. In this paper the Iris recognition has been carried out employing a template of size 10 x 480 pixels instead of 20 x 480 pixels as employed in the earlier paper. The results of the two sizes of the templates have been compared and it has been observed that the accuracy of the results obtained with the limited template size is comparable with that of the one with the full size. The reason for this is also discussed in this paper. The improved methodology suggested has resulted in the reduction of the space requirement as well as time complexity with no loss in accuracy. This paper also provides results of iris recognition performed applying Hamming distance, Feed forward back propagation, Cascade forward back propagation, Elman forward back propagation and perceptron. It has been established that the method suggested applying perceptron provides the best accuracy in respect of iris recognition with no major additional computational complexity. Fingerprints are widely used for unique personal identification based on minutiae matching. Minutiae are the terminations and bifurcations of ridges in a fingerprint image. Generally fingerprint images are of low quality due to the presence of noise and contrast deficiency resulting in discontinuity in ridges producing false minutiae points. It is worth noting that there is a fundamental difference between a neural network (NN) approach for minutiae location and minutiae filtering. In this paper, the spurious minutiae points and the bug pixels introduced during the thinning process are eliminated based on the neighborhood pixel information. A new minutiae filtering algorithm using a NN is introduced to improve the accuracy of the extraction algorithm proposed in the literature. Each minutia, as detected by the algorithm, is classified through ARTMAP NN whose output indicates whether it is a termination, a bifurcation or a false minutia. Experimental results show that the efficiency of minutiae classification has significantly improved using the proposed filtering algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the possibility of using ARTMAP neural network for searching fingerprint patterns from a large database. ARTMAP has the ability to perform concurrent processing, to learn fast, and to make decisions. Since ARTMAP learning is self-stabilizing, it can continue to learn from one or more databases, without performance degradation, until its full memory capacity is utilized. Generally, fingerprint matching is based on local ridge characteristics, and its efficiency depends on minutiae extraction. The experience of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS is extremely stressful and therefore HIV and psychiatric diagnoses are often co-morbid. Over the past decade, significant medical advances have ensured better treatment for people living with HIV but significant challenges remain in dealing with the depression coping with the disease. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of coping enhancement interventions on ways of coping anddepression among People Living with HIV (PLHIV).Quasi-experimentalstudy was conducted among adult PLHIV (aged 18 years and above) attending a Community Care Centre (CCC) at Perambulur in Tamil Nadu. The study participants were selected from the PLHIV registered at the Centre within 2 years of the commencement of the study. Coping was assessed using'Concern and Coping with HIV scale (Vosvick, Martin, Smith, & Jenkins, 2008) CCHIV Scale. Depression was assessed using Hamilton Depression Scale. Coping enhancement intervention included group counseling on health, education and financial issues and also included a step-wise problem solving process wherein PLHIV's major issues in health problems, educational problems, and financial problemswere provided withprobable options to solve identified problems and followed up. Specifically, it addressed physical health issues such as education about HIV/AIDS, nutrition, adherence to medications, psychological issues such as worries related to HIV, stigma, disclosure, anger, etc. and livelihood concerns such as education, finance, hopes for the future of their family - the predominant therapies in the coping intervention was cognitive behavioral. The postintervention assessment interview was administered 6 months after the intervention. The intervention was effective in improving adaptive coping behaviour and decreasing the severity of depressive symptoms. As a result of the intervention, there was a decline in the maladaptive coping behavior but it was not found to be statistically significant. Increasing age and being illiterate were associated with higher level of improvement in positive growth from pre to post intervention (R²=0.56; p<0.01). Thus, interventions to enhance coping can contribute significantly to the psychological well-being of PLHIV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
