Cucurbitaceae, the gourd family of flowering plants, is a very large and diverse family, the order Cucurbitales, contains 95 genera and 950–980 species of food and ornamental plants, and wild and weedy species mostly with high genetic diversity. This review is focused on the most important cucurbit crops (Cucumis sativus, Cucumis melo, Cucurbita spp., Citrullus lanatus, Momordica charantia, Lagenaria siceraria, and Luffa acutangula) and some their wild relatives as hosts of cucurbit powdery mildews (CPM). Powdery mildews (PM) (Ascomycota, Erysiphales) are one of the most frequently encountered and easily visible groups of plant pathogenic fungi with > 900 species. They are obligate biotrophs, they colonize above-ground plant tissues, mostly leaves, though they may also colonize stems, petioles, flowers and fruits, and they are usually debilitators, not killers. These parasitic fungi have been problematic on cucurbits for a long time world-wide, causing serious economic losses in yield and quality. All economically important cucurbit crops host CPM. Seven PM species with different taxonomic positions, host ranges, geographic distributions and ecological requirements are known on cucurbits. CPM species taxonomy and denomination rapidly changed during last few decades through detailed analyses and clarifications. At least three PM species frequently parasitize cucurbits: the endoparasite Leveillula taurica (Lt) with marginal economic importance; and two ectoparasitic species, Golovinomyces orontii (Go), and Podosphaera xanthii (Px), which are economically important world-wide. The two pathogens differ in ecological requirements and distribution, though they may occur together in mixed infections. They are highly variable at the population level for virulence, race identities, and fast adaptation of pathogens. Cucurbit-CPM species interactions are diverse and complicated, and differ between hosts and their respective pathogen genera and species. Here we present a critical overview of obstacles, gaps and recent progress in these matters for six cucurbit genera with respect to resistance resources, genetics of resistance, genetic mapping and development of molecular markers, physiology and mechanisms of resistance, developments in mlo-mediated resistance, patents, and CPM resistance breeding. This study examines whether earnings changes convey information in bond markets and finds a significant positive (negative) reaction to unexpected earnings increases (decreases). The results are consistent whether earnings announcements precede or follow dividend announcements. Thus, earnings surprises convey information to bond markets and changes in firm value are split among bondholders and stockholders. This is in contrast to evidence from studies examining unexpected dividend announcements where bond price reaction is asymmetric. The aim of the present study was to investigate the predictive value of MMP (matrix metalloproteinase)-2, MMP-3 and MMP-9 levels in patients with acute coronary syndrome for death, readmission with HF (heart failure) or recurrent MI (myocardial infarction) and to compare them with established markers, NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) and the GRACE (Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events) score. A single blood test was taken 4 days after admission in 1024 consecutive patients with acute MI with end points observed over 519 (134–1059) days [value is median (range)]. MMP-2 and MMP-3 were increased in patients who died (n=111) compared with survivors (P<0.006 and P=0.01 respectively), but were similar in patients with HF (n=106) or MI (n=138). MMP-9 levels were similar across study end points. Using Cox proportional hazards modelling, MMP-2 demonstrated an independent prediction of death [HR (hazard ratio) 6.60, P=0.001], along with NT-proBNP (HR 4.62, P<0.001) and the GRACE score (HR 1.03, P<0.001), but MMP-3, MMP-9 or log10-troponin I did not. For 1 year mortality, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were 0.60 and 0.58 for MMP-2 and MMP-3 respectively, compared with 0.82 for NT-proBNP and 0.84 for the GRACE score (all P<0.001). Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that MMP-2 levels in the top quartile were associated with higher mortality rates (log rank 12.49, P=0.006). On univariate analysis, MMP-2 and MMP-3 had a weak association with HF readmission, which was lost after adjustment for clinical factors. None of the MMPs tested predicted MI. In conclusion, this is the first single centre study that identifies MMP2 as an independent predictor of all-cause mortality post-ACS (acute coronary syndrome); however, NT-proBNP and the GRACE score are superior for risk stratification in this cohort. The GRACE (Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events) risk score has been shown to offer predictive power with regard to death and AMI (acute myocardial infarction) in patients with ACS (acute coronary syndromes). NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) has also been found to be useful in predicting mortality following ACS. In the present study, we sought to investigate the use of the GRACE score and NT-proBNP levels at predicting risk of early and late deaths following ACS. We studied 1033 patients (740 men, mean age 66.5±12.7 years) with AMI. Blood was drawn once within 24 h following the onset of chest pain. The plasma concentration of NT-proBNP was determined using an in-house non-competitive immunoassay. Patients were GRACE risk scored. The 30-day mortality was 3.7% and the 6-month mortality was 7.8%, and all were related to higher GRACE risk scores (P=0.001 for trend). Higher NT-proBNP levels were also related to increased mortality (P<0.0001). In a Cox proportional hazards model, independent predictors of 30-day and 6-month mortality included NT-proBNP levels and the GRACE risk score. The receiver-operating curve for the GRACE risk score was complemented by NT-proBNP levels for prediction of 30-day mortality [AUC (area under the curve), 0.85] and 6-month mortality (AUC, 0.81). NT-proBNP gives complementary information to the GRACE risk score for predicting early and late mortality. The inclusion of the NT-proBNP blood test is useful in risk-stratifying patients after ACS. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to study reliability, availability, and mean time to failure of a repairable robot-safety system composed of (n-1) standby robots, a safety unit, and a switch. Design/methodology/approach - Generalized expressions for system state probabilities, system availability, reliability, and mean time to failure are developed when the failure rates of robot and safety unit are constant and the failed system repair times are arbitrarily distributed. Supplementary variable and Markov methods were used to develop these expressions. Findings - This study clearly demonstrates that standby robots and the repair process help to improve system availability. Practical implications - This study will help maintenance engineers and reliability practitioners to become aware of the combined effect of standby robots and the repair process on the performance of the robot-safety system. Consequently, they will make better maintenance related decisions in organizations such as automobile manufacturers that use robots quite frequently. Originality/value - This paper has studied the effects of having redundant robots and the repair facilities on the performance of a robot-safety system with perfect mechanism to turn on a standby robot. Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) is a well recognized complication of solid organ transplantation and therapeutic immunosuppression, first reported in 1968. PTLD incorporates a spectrum of abnormalities ranging from a benign infectious mononucleosis-like illness to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with nodal and extranodal site involvement. The first liver transplant was performed at our institution in January 1982. This retrospective study examined the incidence of PTLD, reason for the original transplants, presenting symptoms, radiological findings, immunosuppression regimens and outcomes of these patients. From a total of 2005 adult liver transplants, 23 patients (1.1%) were identified with PTLD. The average age of these patients at the time of transplant was 46.5 years, with a ratio of female-to-male of 14:9. Indication for transplant ranged from primary biliary cirrhosis (eight patients) to epitheloid haemangioendothelioma (one patient). The average time interval between transplant and diagnosis of PTLD was 50 months. Imaging abnormalities identified included generalized lymphadenopathy, liver and portal masses, splenic enlargement, bowel, eye, cerebral and neck involvement; and in two patients, no radiological abnormality. The most common histological findings ranged from B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (five patients) to early PTLD in one patient. Our rate of PTLD is lower compared with published literature and demonstrates a much longer time interval from transplant to occurrence of PTLD than previously appreciated. This could be secondary to a low immunosuppression therapy followed at our institution. From a few months to several years after liver transplantation, the radiologist needs to be alert to the possibility of PTLD and thorough imaging is required to detect the wide variety of potential presentations. Abstract  An understanding of the adsorption–desorption behaviour of phosphate (P) in soils after three decades of long-term fertilization would be an invaluable supplement to our knowledge of the chemistry of P in soils and would assist in developing P application strategies for successive crops. With this objective and within the framework of a long-term experiment, we collected surface soil samples (0–0.15 m) from agricultural crop land on which a rotation of maize-wheat-cowpea (fodder) crops had been grown for 32 years. The soil samples were investigated for adsorption and desorption behaviour of P, and the buffering capacities of soil samples were computed from the adsorption data. Soils differed widely in their P supply characteristics. Phosphate adsorption increased while percentage P adsorbed decreased gradually with increasing levels of added P. Adsorption maxima and the extent of P adsorption was at its maximum in unfertilized soil, and P adsorption decreased with increased P applications. The incorporation of farmyard manure with optimal P levels decreased P adsorption even more than a super-optimal application of P fertilizers. Bonding energy and Freundlich constant ȁ8nȁ9 also decreased with increased P application and with the incorporation of farmyard manure. The adsorption and desorption of applied P were inversely related, and the soils that adsorbed P the most readily released it the least into the soil solution, and vice-versa. Computation of maximum buffering capacities (MBC) indicated that increased levels of P application decreased MBC and increased P supply in soil. The beneficial effects of an annual incorporation of farmyard manure with optimal P levels were clearly pronounced, and P availability in these soils was found to be even higher than the soil receiving the super-optimal application of P fertilizers. Various adsorption–desorption parameters were significantly related with the P uptake of different summer (rice, maize, soybean) and winter (wheat, berseem and raya) crops. Much has been studied and written about plastic changes in the CNS of humans triggered by events such as limb amputation. However, little is known about the extent to which the original pathways retain residual function after peripheral amputation. Our earlier, acute study on long-term amputees indicated that central pathways associated with amputated peripheral nerves retain at least some sensory and motor function. The purpose of the present study was to determine if these functional connections would be strengthened or improved with experience and training over several days time. To do this, electrodes were implanted within fascicles of severed nerves of long-term human amputees to evaluate the changes in electrically evoked sensations and volitional motor neuron activity associated with attempted phantom limb movements. Nerve stimulation consistently resulted in discrete, unitary, graded sensations of touch/pressure and joint-position sense. There was no significant change in the values of stimulation parameters required to produce these sensations over time. Similarly, while the amputees were able to improve volitional control of motor neuron activity, the rate and pattern of change was similar to that seen with practice in normal individuals on motor tasks. We conclude that the central plasticity seen after amputation is most likely primarily due to unmasking, rather than replacement, of existing synaptic connections. Consumer trust in an Internet vendor is an issue commanding ever more attention. Based on an extensive review of literature, this paper proposes dimensions of trust in an Internet vendor. These are competence, integrity and benevolence. Competence refers to a company's ability to fulfill promises made with the consumers. Integrity suggests that a company acts in a consistent, reliable, and honest manner. Benevolence is the ability of a company to hold consumer interests ahead of its own self-interest and indicates sincere concern for the welfare of the customers. In a further analysis various sources where trust might reside are also identified. Drawing on the literature in marketing and general management, the sources of trust are classified as characteristics of the consumer, the firm, the website and the interaction between the consumer and the firm. Given the dimensions and sources of trust, a path model for developing consumer trust in E-commerce is suggested. This research makes a contribution to the development of a theoretical understanding of trust in E-commerce. Although the concepts presented in this paper can be used to carry out further empirical research, they can also be used by practitioners to identify particular trust characteristics for realizing the potential of business to consumer E-commerce venture. Dorsally displaced fractures of the distal radius fractures are one of the commonest in day-to-day practice. There is still no consensus among surgeons regarding the suitability of using volar or the dorsal cortex as basis for internal fixation for dorsally displaced fractures. We report an anatomical study, which compares the thickness of the volar and dorsal cortices of cadaveric adult radii using digital photography. Results of this study show that the volar cortex was statistically, significantly thicker than the dorsal cortex. We believe that the volar cortex may behave as the calcar of the distal radius and hence internal fixation devices applied to the volar cortex may provide a more stable internal fixation compared to those based on the dorsal cortex. We report the discovery of the first short-period binary in which a hot subdwarf star (sdOB) filled its Roche lobe and started mass transfer to its companion. The object was discovered as part of a dedicated high-cadence survey of the Galactic plane named the Zwicky Transient Facility and exhibits a period of P = 39.3401(1) minutes, making it the most compact hot subdwarf binary currently known. Spectroscopic observations are consistent with an intermediate He-sdOB star with an effective temperature of = 42,400 ± 300 K and a surface gravity of = 5.77 ± 0.05. A high signal-to-noise ratio GTC+HiPERCAM light curve is dominated by the ellipsoidal deformation of the sdOB star and an eclipse of the sdOB by an accretion disk. We infer a low-mass hot subdwarf donor with a mass MsdOB = 0.337 ± 0.015 and a white dwarf accretor with a mass MWD = 0.545 ± 0.020 . Theoretical binary modeling indicates the hot subdwarf formed during a common envelope phase when a 2.5–2.8 star lost its envelope when crossing the Hertzsprung gap. To match its current , , , and masses, we estimate a post–common envelope period of ≈ 150 minutes and find that the sdOB star is currently undergoing hydrogen shell burning. We estimate that the hot subdwarf will become a white dwarf with a thick helium layer of ≈0.1 , merge with its carbon/oxygen white dwarf companion after ≈17 Myr, and presumably explode as a thermonuclear supernova or form an R CrB star. The Low-Frequency Array radio telescope discovered the 707 Hz binary millisecond pulsar (MSP) J0952−0607 in a targeted radio pulsation search of an unidentified Fermi gamma-ray source. This source shows a weak energy flux of Fγ = 2.6 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1 in the energy range between 100 MeV and 100 GeV. Here we report the detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from PSR J0952−0607 in a very sensitive gamma-ray pulsation search. The pulsar’s rotational, binary, and astrometric properties are measured over 7 years of Fermi-Large Area Telescope data. For this we take into account the uncertainty on the shape of the gamma-ray pulse profile. We present an updated radio-timing solution now spanning more than 2 years and show results from optical modeling of the black-widow-type companion based on new multiband photometric data taken with HiPERCAM on the Gran Telescopio Canarias on La Palma and ULTRACAM on the New Technology Telescope at ESO La Silla (based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, Chile; programme 0101.D-0925, PI: Clark, C. J.). PSR J0952−0607 is now the fastest-spinning pulsar for which the intrinsic spin-down rate has been reliably constrained (). The inferred surface magnetic field strength of is among the 10 lowest of all known pulsars. This discovery is another example of an extremely fast spinning black-widow pulsar hiding within an unidentified Fermi gamma-ray source. Many THz applications require detection of sub-picosecond THz pulses. Electronic detectors, in particular, can address this challenge. We report on the detection of sub-picosecond THz pulses generated by a large-area interdigitated photoconductive antenna using a AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor with integrated bow-tie antenna. We demonstrate that the detector’s photoresponse is linear in a wide range of gate bias voltages regarding the available THz radiation power with peak power levels of a few hundreds of milliwatts. We apply an autocorrelation technique to investigate the spectral response of our detector within a bandwidth exceeding 1 THz. We observe an unexpected frequency roll-off of responsivity, which can not be predicted using a framework of standard distributed transmission line theory. However, we show that the data can be understood if one accounts for only partial plasmon screening by the gate electrode, so that the results adhere simply to the distributed resistive mixing approximation, whereby the device suffers from the observed roll-off. This indicates, that for novel detectors and radiation sources, which intend to utilize plasma waves, it is important to ensure efficient screening by the gate electrode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the discovery of the ultracompact hot subdwarf (sdOB) binary OW J074106.0–294811.0 with an orbital period of minutes, making it the most compact hot subdwarf binary known. Spectroscopic observations using the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes revealed a He-sdOB primary with an intermediate helium abundance, = K and = 5.74 ± 0.09. High signal-to-noise ratio light curves show strong ellipsoidal modulation resulting in a derived sdOB mass with a WD companion ( ). The mass ratio was found to be . The derived mass for the He-sdOB is inconsistent with the canonical mass for hot subdwarfs of . To put constraints on the structure and evolutionary history of the sdOB star we compared the derived , , and sdOB mass to evolutionary tracks of helium stars and helium white dwarfs calculated with Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). We find that the best-fitting model is a helium white dwarf with a mass of 0.320 , which left the common envelope ago, which is consistent with the observations. As a helium white dwarf with a massive white dwarf companion, the object will reach contact in 17.6 Myr at an orbital period of 5 minutes. Depending on the spin–orbit synchronization timescale the object will either merge to form an R CrB star or end up as a stably accreting AM CVn-type system with a helium white dwarf donor. Science and technologies based on terahertz frequency electromagnetic radiation (100 GHz–30 THz) have developed rapidly over the last 30 years. For most of the 20th Century, terahertz radiation, then referred to as sub-millimeter wave or far-infrared radiation, was mainly utilized by astronomers and some spectroscopists. Following the development of laser based terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the 1980s and 1990s the field of THz science and technology expanded rapidly, to the extent that it now touches many areas from fundamental science to ‘real world’ applications. For example THz radiation is being used to optimize materials for new solar cells, and may also be a key technology for the next generation of airport security scanners. While the field was emerging it was possible to keep track of all new developments, however now the field has grown so much that it is increasingly difficult to follow the diverse range of new discoveries and applications that are appearing. At this point in time, when the field of THz science and technology is moving from an emerging to a more established and interdisciplinary field, it is apt to present a roadmap to help identify the breadth and future directions of the field. The aim of this roadmap is to present a snapshot of the present state of THz science and technology in 2017, and provide an opinion on the challenges and opportunities that the future holds. To be able to achieve this aim, we have invited a group of international experts to write 18 sections that cover most of the key areas of THz science and technology. We hope that The 2017 Roadmap on THz science and technology will prove to be a useful resource by providing a wide ranging introduction to the capabilities of THz radiation for those outside or just entering the field as well as providing perspective and breadth for those who are well established. We present the discovery of the hot subdwarf B star (sdB) binary PTF1 J082340.04+081936.5. The system has an orbital period of = 87.49668(1) minutes (0.060761584(10) days), making it the second-most compact sdB binary known. The light curve shows ellipsoidal variations. Under the assumption that the sdB primary is synchronized with the orbit, we find a mass of , a companion white dwarf mass of , and a mass ratio of . The future evolution was calculated using the MESA stellar evolution code. Adopting a canonical sdB mass of , we find that the sdB still burns helium at the time it will fill its Roche lobe if the orbital period was less than 106 minutes at the exit from the last common envelope (CE) phase. For longer CE exit periods, the sdB will have stopped burning helium and turned into a C/O white dwarf at the time of contact. Comparing the spectroscopically derived and with our MESA models, we find that an sdB model with a hydrogen envelope mass of matches the measurements at a post-CE age of 94 Myr, corresponding to a post-CE orbital period of 109 minutes, which is close to the limit to start accretion while the sdB is still burning helium. We present a large data set of high-cadence dMe flare light curves obtained with custom continuum filters on the triple-beam, high-speed camera system ULTRACAM. The measurements provide constraints for models of the near-ultraviolet (NUV) and optical continuum spectral evolution on timescales of ≈1 s. We provide a robust interpretation of the flare emission in the ULTRACAM filters using simultaneously obtained low-resolution spectra during two moderate-sized flares in the dM4.5e star YZ CMi. By avoiding the spectral complexity within the broadband Johnson filters, the ULTRACAM filters are shown to characterize bona fide continuum emission in the NUV, blue, and red wavelength regimes. The NUV/blue flux ratio in flares is equivalent to a Balmer jump ratio, and the blue/red flux ratio provides an estimate for the color temperature of the optical continuum emission. We present a new “color–color” relationship for these continuum flux ratios at the peaks of the flares. Using the RADYN and RH codes, we interpret the ULTRACAM filter emission using the dominant emission processes from a radiative-hydrodynamic flare model with a high nonthermal electron beam flux, which explains a hot, T ≈ 104 K, color temperature at blue-to-red optical wavelengths and a small Balmer jump ratio as observed in moderate-sized and large flares alike. We also discuss the high time resolution, high signal-to-noise continuum color variations observed in YZ CMi during a giant flare, which increased the NUV flux from this star by over a factor of 100. Background and Aims Accurately representing development is essential for applying crop simulations to investigate the effects of climate, genotypes or crop management. Development in wheat (Triticum aestivum, T. durum) is primarily driven by temperature, but affected by vernalization and photoperiod, and is often simulated by reducing thermal-time accumulation using vernalization or photoperiod factors or limiting accumulation when a lower optimum temperature (Toptl) is exceeded. In this study Toptl and methods for representing effects of vernalization and photoperiod on anthesis were examined using a range of planting dates and genotypes. Methods An examination was made of Toptl values of 15, 20, 25 and 50 °C, and either the most limiting or the multiplicative value of the vernalization and photoperiod development rate factors for simulating anthesis. Field data were from replicated trials at Ludhiana, Punjab, India with July through to December planting dates and seven cultivars varying in vernalization response. Key Results Simulations of anthesis were similar for Toptl values of 20, 25 and 50 °C, but a Toptl of 15 °C resulted in a consistent bias towards predicting anthesis late for early planting dates. Results for Toptl above 15 °C may have occurred because mean temperatures rarely exceeded 20 °C before anthesis for many planting dates. For cultivars having a strong vernalization response, anthesis was more accurately simulated when vernalization and photoperiod factors were multiplied rather than using the most limiting of the two factors. Conclusions Setting Toptl to a high value (30 °C) and multiplying the vernalization and photoperiod factors resulted in accurately simulating anthesis for a wide range of planting dates and genotypes. However, for environments where average temperatures exceed 20 °C for much of the pre-anthesis period, a lower Toptl (23 °C) might be appropriate.
