Mankind has been dealing with the issue of sealing since the very beginning of construction. Sealed joints are exposed to several external influences, whether physical or mechanical. These effects also include compressive stresses on the sealed joint. If we know that the structure in which the sealed joint will be placed will be exposed to compressive stress, we should choose a suitable sealant regarding this fact. A sealant suitable for sealing joints subjected to compressive stress should have sufficient flexibility after it has hardened. If the sealed joint is not flexible enough, its pressure load can significantly damage the sealed joint, and thus damage the entire structure. This article deals specifically with the sealing of problematic material. Aquapanel cement board is selected as a problematic material for the purposes of the presented research. The tested sealants are selected based on the manufacturer's recommendations on the suitability of these sealants for sealing cementitious materials. Furthermore, primers are used, which are again selected according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Test samples are made from selected materials, which are further conditioned according to a predetermined schedule. Then these samples are tested according to the European standard. Specifically, the resistance of a sealed joint subjected to compressive stress is tested. After exposing the test specimens to this stress, the sealed joints and their possible failure or deterioration are evaluated. The test results are recorded and further evaluated. Based on the evaluation of these results, it is possible to recommend all tested sealants for sealing cementitious materials, except acrylic sealant. The sealed joint made of acrylic sealant shows significant cracks in this test. These cracks are caused by the insufficient flexibility of this type of sealant and thanks to them the sealed joint is considerably degraded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the issue of fastening sheet-metal components on the facades of contemporary buildings that are massively insulated with external thermal insulation composite systems. This research focused on facades with thin-layer acrylic plaster and sheet-metal components made of aluminium, copper and hot-dipped galvanized sheet metal. Two different test methods and test sample geometries were used to determine the most critical aspects for the studied application sectors. Surprisingly high tensile properties as well as shear stresses in the bonded joints were recorded for all the selected combinations. The presented results confirmed the assumed benefits for the construction industry and the future practical use of this technology in construction, although the durability of a bonded joint will always depend mainly on the quality of the bonded substrate. The authors focus on the possibility of sealing wooden elements. Wood appears to be a problematic substrate, and in some cases it could be necessary to solve problems through the use of sealants. The research is based on the test procedure for the determination of tensile properties during maintained extension according to the European standard EN ISO 8340. Facade wood has been selected as a substrate: specifically, heat-treated Finnish pine, has been used. A group of ten commercially available industrially produced sealants, including polyurethane, silicone and MS Polymer sealants, have been selected. The aim of the research was to discover any differences that might appear in their resistance against maintained extension as well as their durability when variable temperatures are applied. The test results were evaluated and stated in a table that defines main adhesive and cohesive failures at 23 ° C and -20 ° C. The research proved the possibility of sealing wood substrates but only if the correct sealant is chosen. Also significant differences between individual sealants in the results they provide in combination with wooden cladding material were observed. Of all the tested sealants only two products passed. The paper describes the testing of the tensile properties of silicone sealants applied to facade cladding materials. The test procedures followed steps defined in applicable technical standards in order to meet their requirements. Furthermore the paper describes the implementation of the tests according to the standards and their application in practice. For the experimental part, industrially produced neutral or universal silicon sealants from three different manufacturers were selected. The researchers also decided to choose silicon sealants from various price categories. The aim of the research was to determine any differences in the resistance of sealants to permanent extension maintained at normal or freezing temperatures. Samples of the following materials were used as facade cladding alternatives: composite aluminium panels, fibre-cement slates, ceramic tiles, fibrecement and compact tiles, metal plates without surface finish, artificial stone panels and thermowood facade panels. It was measured with putty consistency by construction materials. They were always tested in three test samples of each material. The test results have been evaluated and are displayed in a table that defines appropriate and inappropriate combinations of facade materials and sealants. Only serie of all three test specimen that showed ability to satisfy all requirements had been evaluated as convenient otherwise the test specimens can not be recommended. The conclusion of the tests is that the choice of a suitable sealant is not straightforward and cannot be responsibly carried out without previous experience or measurements. The chosen test method has also revealed that there are significant performance differences between silicon sealants. Likewise, it seems to be a fact that the use of the most expensive sealants does not necessarily lead to the best results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
