Tide‐dominated sandy shelf seas, such as the Dutch North Sea, are covered by sand waves. Yet, basin‐scale hydrodynamic models do not include any sand wave information because their grid sizes are too coarse to resolve sand waves individually. We explore the possibility of parametrizing the effects of sand waves on the larger‐scale tidal flow by means of a form roughness. Specifically, our aim is to see to what extent the flow over a sand wave field can be reproduced by that over a flat seabed with an increased effective roughness (accounting for both grain and form roughness). To do so, we use two process‐based hydrodynamic models: a second order perturbation approach, and Delft3D. Both models demonstrate that the presence of sand waves causes amplitude decrease and phase shift of the tidal flow. We explore the dependencies of form roughness on different sand wave characteristics (wavelength, height and asymmetry). Shorter and higher sand waves cause a higher form roughness, while our analysis does not reveal any dependency on sand wave asymmetry. Notably, the consideration of a tidal flow, characterized by several tidal constituents, each represented by an amplitude and a phase, results in a more complex form roughness analysis than in a fluvial setting, where the flow is unidirectional and steady. We thus obtain an amplitude‐based form roughness and a phase‐based form roughness, each yielding a different value, yet displaying the same qualitative dependencies. Plain Language Summary: Tide‐dominated seas, such as the Dutch North Sea, are often covered by tidal sand waves, that is, seabed undulations characterized by wavelengths of hundreds of meters, heights of several meters and migration rates of several meters per year. The presence of sand waves causes an increase in the roughness experienced by the tidal flow. As a result, the tidal flow may for example, slow down or lower in amplitude. Yet, the effects of sand waves are generally not considered in larger‐scale hydrodynamic models. We explore the possibility of representing the effects of sand waves through an increase in bed roughness on a flat seabed, that is, a form roughness. To do so, we use two process‐based hydrodynamic models. Results show that higher and shorter sand waves result in a higher form roughness. Furthermore, the unsteady nature of the tidal flow gives rise to multiple criteria to determine form roughness. These criteria yield different values for form roughness, highlighting the complexities of considering form roughness in a tidal setting. The formation of fluvial dunes is usually studied by investigating the time development of a small amplitude bottom perturbation of a uniform stream and considering that the dunes originate by the growth of the bottom mode characterized by the largest amplification rate under the assumption of an infinite availability of the mobile sediment (linear stability analysis). Here we undertake the stability analysis investigating the formation of sand dunes in steady currents by accounting for the nonlinear effects of sediment starvation on the formative mechanisms of the bedforms and comparing the theoretical results with laboratory experiments, and an application of a fully nonlinear commercial model of finite amplitude dunes, thus enabling an improved understanding of the genesis of starved fluvial dunes. As the growth of the dunes progressively exposes the motionless substratum, both the stability‐based and the numerical models predict starved dunes characterized by increasing crest‐to‐crest distances. The increase of the crest‐to‐crest distance corresponds to a decrease of the length of individual dunes as well as a growing irregularity in their spacing and morphology. These findings conform with the outcome of physical experiments performed earlier in a laboratory flume and existing measurements of starved fluvial dunes in the field. Plain Language Summary: The genesis of fluvial dunes is a topic of considerable interest to river engineering as dunes are a primary source of flow resistance, regulating water levels and transport processes. The modeling of fluvial dunes is usually performed assuming an infinite availability of the sediment that can be eroded and deposited by the water flow. Field observations and laboratory experiments nevertheless indicate that the supply of sediment affects dune growth and the resulting morphology of the river bed. Here we present a new theoretical model able to reproduce the effects that the lack of sediment has on the growth of dunes and compare it against laboratory experiments, and a numerical commercial model. Our results show that a progressively decrease in sediment supply leads to an increase in dune spacing and a decrease in dune length corresponding to steeper longitudinal profiles. These findings agree with the results of laboratory experiments and existing measurements in the field. As such, this study paves the way to the modeling of fluvial dunes in sediment starved environments and the prediction of their effects on the river flow. Tidal sand waves form a dynamic bed pattern, widely occurring in shallow shelf seas such as the North Sea. Their importance to coastal engineering has inspired many advances in process-based sand wave modelling, aimed at explaining physical mechanisms in the formation stage ('linear regime') and capturing the finite amplitude evolution to equilibrium states ('nonlinear regime'). However, systematic validation of particularly the nonlinear sand wave models is still lacking. Here, we perform a two-step calibration and validation study of a sand wave model (specifically, their linear and nonlinear model versions) against field data from the North Sea. In the first step, the linear model is calibrated by seeking overall values of two uncertain input parameters (slip parameter, wave period) for which the modeled and observed wavelengths show the best agreement. In the second step, using the calibrated input parameters and preferred wavelengths from the linear model, equilibrium heights from the nonlinear sand wave model are validated against the observed sand wave heights. Our results show satisfactory agreement between observed and modeled sand wave lengths (from the linear sand wave model) and a systematic overprediction of sand wave heights (using the nonlinear model). Regression analysis can be used to rescale the nonlinear model results to obtain realistic predictions of sand wave heights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tidal sand waves are dynamic bedforms found in coastal shelf seas. Moreover, these areas are inhabited by numerous benthic species, of which the spatial distribution is linked to the morphological structure of sand waves. In particular, the tube‐building worm Lanice conchilegais of interest as this organism forms small mounds on the seabed, which provide shelter to other organisms. We investigate how the interactions between small‐scale mounds (height ∼⃒dm) and large‐scale sand waves (height ∼⃒m) shape the bed of the marine environment. To this end, we present a two‐way coupled process‐based model of sand waves and tube‐building worm patches in Delft3D. The population density evolves according to a general law of logistic growth, with the bed shear stress controlling the carrying capacity. Worm patches are randomly seeded and the tubes are mimicked by small cylinders that influence flow and turbulence, thereby altering sediment dynamics. Model results relate the patches with the highest worm densities to the sand wave troughs, which qualitatively agrees with field observations. Furthermore, the L. conchilegatubes trigger the formation of sandy mounds on the seabed. Because of the population density distribution, the mounds in the troughs can be several centimetres higher than on the crests. Regarding sand wave morphology, the combination of patches and mounds are found to shorten the time‐to‐equilibrium. Also, if the initial bed comprised small sinusoidal sand waves, the equilibrium wave height decreased with a few decimetres compared to the situation without worm patches. As the timescale of mound formation (years) is shorter than that of sand wave evolution (decades), the mounds induce (and accelerate) sand wave growth on a similar spatial scale to the mounds. Initially, this leads to shorter sand waves than they would be in an abiotic environment. However, near equilibrium the wavelengths tend towards their abiotic counterparts again. © 2020 The Authors. We use a linear stability approach to develop a process-based morphodynamic model including a two-way coupling between tidal sand wave dynamics and benthic organisms. With this model we are able to study both the effect of benthic organisms on the hydro- and sediment dynamics, and the effect of spatial and temporal environmental variations on the distribution of these organisms. Specifically, we include two coupling processes: the effect of the biomass of the organisms on the bottom slip parameter, and the effect of shear stress variations on the biological carrying capacity. We discuss the differences and similarities between the methodology used in this work and that from 'traditional' (morphodynamics only) stability modelling studies. Here, we end up with a 2 × 2 linear eigenvalue problem, which leads to two distinct eigenmodes for each topographic wave number. These eigenmodes control the growth and migration properties of both sand waves and benthic organisms (biomass). Apart from hydrodynamic forcing, the biomass also grows autonomously, which results in a changing fastest growing mode (FGM, i.e. the preferred wavelength) over time. As a result, in contrast to 'traditional' stability modelling studies, the FGM for a certain model outcome does not necessarily have to be dominant in the field. Therefore, we also analysed the temporal evolution of an initial bed hump (without perturbing biomass) and of an initial biomass hump (without perturbing topography). It turns out that these local disturbances may trigger the combined growth of sand waves and spatially varying biomass patterns. Moreover, the results reveal that the autonomous benthic growth significantly influences the growth rate of sand waves. Finally, we show that biomass maxima tend to concentrate in the region around the trough and lee side slope of sand waves, which corresponds to observations in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an idealized network model for storm surges in the Wadden Sea, specifically including a time-dependent wind forcing (wind speed and direction). This extends the classical work by H.A. Lorentz who only considered the equilibrium response to a steady wind forcing. The solutions obtained in the frequency domain for the linearized shallow-water equations in a channel are combined in an algebraic system for the network. The velocity scale that is used for the linearized friction coefficient is determined iteratively. The hindcast of the storm surge of 5 December 2013 produces credible time-varying results. The effects of storm and basin parameters on the peak surge elevation are the subject of a sensitivity analysis. The formulation in the frequency domain reveals which modes in the external forcing lead to the largest surge response at coastal stations. There appears to be a minimum storm duration, of about 3-4 h, that is required for a surge to attain its maximum elevation. The influence of the water levels at the North Sea inlets on the Wadden Sea surges decreases towards the shore. The cross-sectional stability of double inlet systems is investigated using an exploratory model that combines Escoffier’s stability concept for the evolution of the inlet’s cross-sectional area with a two-dimensional, depth-averaged (2DH) hydrodynamic model for tidal flow. The model geometry consists of four rectangular compartments, each with a uniform depth, associated with the ocean, tidal inlets and basin. The water motion, forced by an incoming Kelvin wave at the ocean’s open boundary and satisfying the linear shallow water equations on the f-plane with linearised bottom friction, is in each compartment written as a superposition of eigenmodes, i.e. Kelvin and Poincaré waves. A collocation method is employed to satisfy boundary and matching conditions. The analysis of resulting equilibrium configurations is done using flow diagrams. Model results show that internally generated spatial variations in the water motion are essential for the existence of stable equilibria with two inlets open. In the hydrodynamic model used in the paper, both radiation damping into the ocean and basin depth effects result in these necessary spatial variations. Coriolis effects trigger an asymmetry in the stable equilibrium cross-sectional areas of the inlets. Furthermore, square basin geometries generally correspond to significantly larger equilibrium values of the inlet cross-sections. These model outcomes result from a competition between a destabilising (caused by inlet bottom friction) and a stabilising mechanism (caused by spatially varying local pressure gradients over the inlets). Bathymetric resurveying in shallow seas is a costly process with limited resources, yet necessary for adequate nautical charts and therefore crucial for safe navigation. An important factor in an efficient resurvey policy is the type and size of sea floor dynamics. We propose four indicators, which we use in a procedure to recommend changes to the resurvey policies of the Belgian and Netherlands Continental Shelf (BNLCS). These shallow regions are characterised by a sandy sea floor covered with rhythmic patterns. The proposed indicators follow from the estimates for sea floor dynamics, as given by applying the statistical method of deformation analysis. We present a concept for the shallowest likely depth surface, on which we base two of the indicators. The other two indicators may act as a warning: they quantify the potentially missed dynamics, which makes the procedure more robust in case of complicated morphology. Finally, applying our procedure to the BNLCS, we show clear differences in recommended resurvey priority between the five analysed regions, which currently have equal resurvey frequencies. This review highlights three morphodynamics modelling approaches, used for offshore marine aggregate extraction impact assessment. These approaches are based upon examples of (1) full process-based models; (2) idealised process- based models; and (3) conceptual models. Illustrated also is the way in which these models, applied for extractions on flat bed or sandbanks, can complement each other, towards the estimation of Coastal State Indicators (CSIs). This review leads to the conclusion that, for an optimal environment assessment, there are two main approaches: (1) either combine and couple the models, in order to simulate the full morphodynamics of the system over a long time-scale, taking into account also short-term events, or (2) use a set of existing models, knowing precisely their applicability to the CSI's and the reliability of their predictions, rather than using only the best model, available presently. The modelling of time-varying shallow flows, such as tides and storm surges, is complicated by the nonlinear dependency of bed shear stress on flow speed. For tidal flows, Lorentz's linearisation circumvents nonlinearity by specifying a (steady) friction coefficient r based on a tide-averaged criterion of energy equivalence. However, this approach is not suitable for phenomena with episodic and irregular forcings such as storm surges. Here, we studied the implications of applying Lorentz's energy criterion in an instantaneous sense, so that an unsteady friction coefficient r (t) adjusts to the temporal development of natural wind-driven flows. This new bed-stress parametrisation was implemented in an idealised model of a single channel, forced by time-varying signals of wind stress (acting over the entire domain) and surface elevation (at the channel mouth). The solution method combines analytical solutions of the cross-sectionally averaged linearised shallow-water equations, obtained in the frequency domain, with an iterative procedure to determine r (t) . Model results, compared with a reference finite-difference solution retaining the quadratic bed shear stress, show that this new approach accurately captures the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the surge dynamics (height and timing of surge peaks, sloshing, friction-induced tide-surge interaction) for both synthetic and realistic wind forcings. A new method to calculate flow in compound channels is proposed: the interacting divided channel method (IDCM), based on a new parametrization of the interface stress between adjacent flow compartments, typically between the main channel and floodplain of a two-stage channel. This expression is motivated by scaling arguments and allows for a simple analytical solution of the average flow velocities in different compartments. The article presents the author's response to the criticism of their paper titled "Interacting Divided Channel Method for Compound Channel Flow," that was published in the August 2009 issue of the journal. They say that the discussers point out the numerical value of turbulent exchange factor as 0.16 but they have adopted the value of 0.020 from researchers S. Proust and colleagues. The authors say that the discussers have correctly identified inconsistencies in several equations.

Beach erosion, ubiquitous of sandy coasts around the world, can be exacerbated or mitigated with the use of hard engineering solutions including groins. The use of groins has been discouraged in many countries despite its capability to reduce sand losses. This study aims to design a 15 m permeable groin that allows sediment bypassing. Field experiments were conducted on a low-energy, sea-breeze dominated micro-tidal beach at the northern Yucatan peninsula during both mean and extreme wave conditions. Firstly, a short-term experiment consisted in monitoring the structure performance for 24 h during typical sea breeze conditions and the subsequent beach recovery after the structure removal. Secondly, a multi-day (60 days) experiment was conducted to investigate the performance of a single- and double-groin system during both mean and local storm conditions. Beach surveys were conducted to evaluate the beach response. Shoreline variability shows sediment accretion on the east side of the structure during sea breezes, whereas during NNW storm events, the accretion occurred on the west side. Importantly, on a scale of days, sediment bypassing occurs, and hence a net accretion was measured at both sides of the structure. During this time, a second structure was deployed 30 m apart to test the performance of a double-groin system, finding a net shoreline advance at all beach transects. Thus, low-crested short-length permeable groins are found to be a suitable emergency mitigation measure against beach erosion in micro-tidal environments causing moderate shoreline change. Storms can have devastating impacts on barrier coasts causing coastal erosion, partial inundation, and possibly the breaching of barrier islands. The breaching of barrier islands provides a mechanism for the creation of new tidal inlets that connect the backbarrier basin (or lagoon) and the outer sea. As a new tidal inlet affects both the basin and the hydrodynamics of existing inlets, it is important to understand why an initial breach either closes or may evolve into a new tidal inlet. To this end, we performed a Monte Carlo analysis using an idealized model capable of simulating the long-term morphological evolution of multiple tidal inlets connected to a single backbarrier basin. To do so required the creation of a stochastic shell, as a new element around this existing barrier coast model. Our results demonstrate that barrier coast systems tend towards an equilibrium value for the number of inlets per kilometer of barrier coast and total inlet cross section. This even holds with the continuous stochastic forcing of storm-induced breaches. This finding implies that if a new breach opens in a coast that is already in equilibrium, existing inlets will shrink and may close if the new breach remains open. Furthermore, we find that climate-driven changes in storm frequency will modify the timescales in which barrier coasts reach their equilibrium state. Finally, we find that the distance between a new breach and its nearest neighbor is more important for its survival than the size of the breach or the degree of saturation of the barrier coast.
