Characterized by a composition that highlights extensive geochemical differentiation processes, basaltic asteroids are considered fragments of differentiated bodies. To study the smallest bodies in this population, an important tool is the photometric phase curve that can exhibit different behaviours according to the surface properties of the body. We present here the phase curves obtained for 10 V-type asteroids, nine belonging to the main belt population and one a near-Earth object, with observations acquired at the Observatório Astronômico do Sertão de Itaparica (Brazil). Different behaviours of the phase curves were found, as already obtained by studies of polarimetric curves. Adding to our results in the phase curves of 20 V-types from the literature, we found behaviours not expected for objects of moderate to high albedo in the opposition effect region. We attribute this result to the way regoliths are distributed on the surface of small asteroids, which are different from those of larger objects, although the surface composition is the same. Background: There is an urgent need to find new approaches that improve long-term adherence to a healthy lifestyle for people with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Deposit contracts (a financial incentive in which the participant deposits own money) are inexpensive and effective, but acceptability among CVD patients is unclear. This study investigated the acceptability of a deposit contract intervention for physical activity among CVD patients. Methods: We approached CVD patients through the Harteraad patient panel of the Dutch CVD patient organization and asked them to fill in an online survey. In total (N = 659) CVD patients with a mean age of 66.2 years completed the survey. The survey assessed acceptability of deposit contracts, responses to a concrete example of a deposit contract for physical activity behavior change, and suitable moments for implementation. Results: Overall, half of the participants (45.6%) confirmed needing extra commitment to maintain lifestyle change. Yet, a small part of the sample was convinced by the idea that losing money could be motivating (18.8%) and indicated that they would be willing to deposit money themselves (13.2%). Responding to a concrete example of a deposit contract for physical activity, a quarter of the sample (26.2%) reported there was a chance they would participate. Furthermore, 27.1% of the participants found the deposit contract effective and 27.4% found it acceptable. Exploratory analyses showed that a subgroup of younger and lower educated participants responded more favorably. Opinions on when to start with a deposit contract were mixed. Conclusions: Because acceptability was generally found to be low, future research should also investigate strategies to leverage commitment principles for CVD patients without a cash deposit requirement. When deposit contracts are offered to CVD patients in practice, we recommend offering them as an optional, additional element to existing interventions that patients can opt-in to. The objective of this work is to characterize the onset of laterally asymmetric flow of viscoelastic solutions around a confined microfluidic cylinder, which was encountered in a recent study [Rodrigues et al., J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 289, 104406 (2020)]. To this end, two non-Newtonian fluids were employed in the same micro-geometry. Two microchannels were studied, both with a cylinder of diameter 75 μm, aspect ratio (channel height over width) of 0.37, and blockage ratio (cylinder diameter over channel width) of 0.28, differing only on the width of the pressure taps, located 500 μm up- and downstream from the respective cylinder face, on opposing walls. The working fluids consist of two poly(ethylene oxide) solutions: an elastic weakly shear-thinning fluid and an elastic shear-thinning fluid. Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry and streak imaging techniques were used to evaluate the flow over a Weissenberg number range 100 ≤ W i ≤ 500 , while maintaining a low Reynolds number, Re < 1. The elastic shear-thinning solution showed laterally asymmetric flow past the cylinder with both pressure tap designs, while with the weakly shear-thinning solution asymmetric flow was only observed with the wider pressure tap intake. In both cases, the fluids preferentially chose the cylinder/wall gap opposing the upstream pressure tap, which was found to influence the flow greatly, seemingly associated with time-dependent flow and possibly the lateral flow asymmetry itself. This work brings to light the necessary compromise between optimal pressure tap design for quality pressure measurements and minimal flow interference, due to the increased susceptibility of elastic microfluidic flows to flow perturbations. We present an observational and numerical study of the borderline hyperbolic comet C/2021 O3 (PANSTARRS) performed during its recent passage through the inner Solar system. Our observations were carried out at OASI and SOAR between 2021 October and 2022 January, and reveal a low level of activity relative to which was measured for other long-period comets. In addition, we observed a decrease in brightness as the comet got closer to the Sun. Our photometric data, obtained as C/2021 O3 approached perihelion on 2022 April 21, show that the comet was much less active than what is usually expected in the cases of long-period comets, with Af ρ values more in line with those of short-period comets (specifically, the Jupiter-family comets). On the other hand, the observed increase in the value of the spectral slope as the amount of dust in the coma decreased could indicate that the smaller dust particles were being dispersed from the coma by radiation pressure faster than they were injected by possible sublimation jets. The analysis of its orbital evolution suggests that C/2021 O3 could be a dynamically old comet, or perhaps a new one masquerading as a dynamically old comet, with a likely origin in the Solar system. Objective: To evaluate whether colchicine treatment was associated with the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in patients with COVID-19. Methods: We present a post hoc analysis from a double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial (RCT) on the effect of colchicine for the treatment of COVID-19. Serum levels of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome products—active caspase-1 (Casp1p20), IL-1β, and IL-18—were assessed at enrollment and after 48–72 h of treatment in patients receiving standard-of-care (SOC) plus placebo vs. those receiving SOC plus colchicine. The colchicine regimen was 0.5 mg tid for 5 days, followed by 0.5 mg bid for another 5 days. Results: Thirty-six patients received SOC plus colchicine, and thirty-six received SOC plus placebo. Colchicine reduced the need for supplemental oxygen and the length of hospitalization. On Days 2–3, colchicine lowered the serum levels of Casp1p20 and IL-18, but not IL-1β. Conclusion: Treatment with colchicine inhibited the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, an event triggering the 'cytokine storm' in COVID-19. In Metrodorea nigra, a Rutaceae species with rhythmic growth, the shoot apex in the dormant stage is enclosed by modified stipules. The young organs are fully covered with peltate secretory trichomes, and these structures remain immersed in a hyaline exudate within a hood‐shaped structure. Our study focused on the morpho‐functional characterization of the peltate trichomes and cytological events associated with secretion.Shoot apices were collected during both dormant and active stages and processed for anatomical, cytochemical and ultrastructural studies.Trichomes initiate secretion early on, remain active throughout leaf development, but collapse as the leaves expand; at which time secretory cavities start differentiation in the mesophyll and secretion increases as the leaf reaches full expansion. The subcellular apparatus of the trichome head cells is consistent with hydrophilic and lipophilic secretion. Secretion involves two vesicle types: the smaller vesicles are PATAg‐positive (periodic acid/thiocarbohydrazide/silver proteinate) for carbohydrates and the larger ones are PATAg‐negative. In the first phase of secretory activity, the vesicles containing polysaccharides discharge their contents through exocytosis with the secretion accumulating beneath the cuticle, which detaches from the cell wall. Later, a massive discharge of lipophilic substances (lipids and terpenes/phenols) results in their accumulation between the wall and cuticle. Release of the secretions occurs throughout the cuticular microchannels.Continued protection of the leaves throughout shoot development is ensured by replacement of the collapsed secretory trichomes by oil‐secreting cavities. Blood plasma (BP) is a borderline non-Newtonian fluid. Few studies have characterized the rheology of BP and even less focused on understanding its subtle viscoelastic traits, which were only somewhat recently acknowledged. We use passive microrheology to measure the bulk response of human plasma samples under shear at body and ambient temperatures. Evidence of subdiffusive behavior in the mean-squared displacement is observed at the highest frequencies probed, which we attribute to the stress relaxation of protein molecules or chains. Jeffreys-like complex shear moduli were computed thereof. The microenvironments of albumin, fibrinogen, and gamma-globulin solutions (key plasma proteins) were probed as well. Single proteins in an aqueous buffer showed no signs of viscoelasticity within experimental resolution. Conversely, mixed together, they appear to promote the same kind of short-term elastic behavior seen in plasma. All in all, a fresh look at the shear rheology of BP is presented. We report the results we derived analyzing photometric measurements obtained at different phase angles for 15 Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), observed from Campo Imperatore observatory, and Observatório Astronômico do Sertão de Itaparica (OASI). The performed analysis allows us to taxonomically classify them using several independent techniques, thus constraining their surface composition. The majority of this sample is in agreement with a pristine carbonaceous composition (C-complex/D-type asteroids), while few NEOs are composed of more evolved (e.g. S/M/E-type bodies) material. With this work we made evident that a comprehensive characterization of a NEO can be achieved through the coupling of spectrophotometric data and phase curve assessment. Forest plantations play an important role ecologically, contribute to carbon sequestration and support billions of dollars of economic activity each year through sustainable forest management and forest sector value chains. As the global demand for forest products and services increases, the marketplace is seeking more reliable data on forest plantations. Remote sensing technologies allied with machine learning, and most recently deep learning techniques, provide valuable data for inventorying forest plantations and related valuation products. In this work, deep semantic segmentation with U-net architecture was used to detect forest plantation areas using Sentinel-2 and CBERS-4A images of different areas of Brazil. First, the U-net models were built from an area of the Centre-East of Paraná State, and then the best models were tested in 3 new areas that present different characteristics. The U-net models built with Sentinel-2 images achieved promising results for areas similar to the ones used in the training set, with F1-score ranging from 0.9171 to 0.9499 and with Kappa values between 0.8712 to 0.9272, demonstrating the feasibility of deep semantic segmentation to detect forest plantations. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that can be activated by structurally diverse compounds arising from the environment and the microbiota and host metabolism. Expanding evidence has been shown that the modulation of the canonical pathway of AHR occurs during several chronic diseases and that its abrogation might be of clinical interest for metabolic and inflammatory pathological processes. However, most of the evidence on the pharmacological abrogation of the AHR-CYP1A1 axis has been reported in vitro, and therefore, guidance for in vivo studies is needed. In this review, we cover the state-of-the-art of the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of AHR antagonists and CYP1A1 inhibitors in different in vivo rodent (mouse or rat) models of disease. This review will serve as a road map for those researchers embracing this emerging therapeutic area targeting the AHR. The search for innovative and sustainable products that are less damaging to the skin is a matter of foremost importance in the cosmetics area. Chemical surfactants are widely used in cosmetic formulations, however, they have harmful effects, such as allergic reactions and skin irritations, therefore, it is evident that chemical surfactants need to be replaced by more sustainable compounds that present fewer or no negative effect on skin health. Biosurfactants have shown great potential, presenting advantages such as biodegradability, low toxicity, skin compatibility, increased protection and moisturizing effects. Rhamnolipids (RLs) are biosurfactants produced by some bacteria, mainly Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Because of the presence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups in the same molecule, RLs present interesting emulsifying and surfactant properties, making them a suitable alternative to chemical surfactants in cosmetic formulations. In the current study, the properties of the biosurfactant produced by Apoena Biotech were investigated through surface tension tests, CMC, foam formation and stability, antioxidant potential and makeup removal. It was found that RL is a potential substitute or co-surfactant for chemical surfactants. In addition, its antioxidant activity makes it a multifunctional active that can provide benefits to the skin, besides its surfactant's properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Goat farming is an important socio-economic activity. The feedlot system allows the finishing of the animals in short periods through use of concentrated diets; however, these diets increase the system's production costs. Palm kernel cake (PKC) has proved to be a good alternative feed source in diets for cattle and sheep because of its nutritional characteristics and potential to reduce production costs. Aim: This experiment aimed to evaluate the effect of high-concentrate diets with the inclusion of PKC on carcass traits and meat quality of feedlot goat kids. Methods: Thirty-two crossbred, castrated Boer goat kids, 4 months old and of average initial body weight 19.65 ± 3.00 kg, were used in the study. The animals were assigned to treatments in a completely randomised design, with four experimental diets containing PKC at 0%, 12%, 24%, and 36% on a dry matter basis. Measurements included total weight gain at slaughter, quantitative and sensory meat characteristics, and fatty acid profile. Key results: A quadratic effect (P < 0.05) on total weight gain, and on meat marbling, lightness, and yellowness, was observed. The highest total weight gain and marbling were recorded with the diet containing 12% PKC. Loin eye area was also highest at 12% PKC, then decreased, whereas protein content and shear force increased (P < 0.05) at the higher PKC levels. Diet affected (P < 0.05) saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. No effect was observed from the inclusion of PKC on sensory attributes or on nutritional quality of the lipid fraction of the meat. Conclusion: It is recommended the use up to 12% of this alternative source of nutrients, owing to the higher total weight gain and improved quantitative aspects of the goat kids' meat such as marbling and loin eye area. Implications: High-concentrate diets and the use of by-products for animal nutrition have become common in animal production systems. The increasing use of PKC in animal nutrition leads us to determine the best dietary inclusion level, avoiding undesirable production or product quality characteristics. Palm kernel cake has the potential to reduce production costs without affecting performance or product quality. In this trial, 12% inclusion of palm kernel cake increased performance without affecting meat quality of goat kids. This knowledge allows us to make decisions on replacement with palm kernel cake when common ingredients are in short supply or at high prices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) W.W. Hay & H.P. Mohler has been receiving ever increasing attention as a result of its bioactivity potential. A strain of E. huxleyi recently isolated from Portuguese coastal waters (NE Atlantic) was cultivated under controlled laboratory conditions and the attained biomass was biochemically characterized (fatty acid (FA) profile, total phenolic and alkenone contents) and its bioactivity measured (antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties). Moreover, bioaccessibility of selected constituents and bioactivities was assessed. A total dry weight of 556 mg L−1 was attained. The biomass was characterized by a large polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) share of the total FA, 60.8 ± 1.8%, followed by saturated fatty acids (SFA), 22.8 ± 1.0%, and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), 15.9 ± 0.7%. Furthermore, an ω3/ω6 ratio of 37 was calculated. The daily amount of freeze-dried E. huxleyi required to meet the EPA + DHA recommended daily intake (RDI) was 19.9 g. As to the phenolic content, both extracts had similar values, reaching 435.5–465.4 mg GAE (100 g dw)−1. Substantial antioxidant activity as measured by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) was observed. The levels of anti-inflammatory activity were also substantial, 38 ± 4% and 85 ± 11% of COX-2 inhibition in the aqueous and ethanolic extracts, respectively. Moreover, it was observed that the C37:3, C37:2, and C38:2 alkenones were the most abundant, with values exceeding 500 mg (100 g dw)−1 and total alkenone content was approximately 2,500 mg (100 g dw)−1. The bioaccessibility of studied compounds and bioactivities was always low or even nonexistent/undetected. Photometric observations of the nearly equal-mass binary near-Earth asteroid 2017 YE5 were carried out at the Observatório Astronômico do Sertão de Itaparica (OASI, Brazil) and at the Blue Mountains Observatory (BMO, Australia) between 2018 July and August, shortly after it made a close approach to Earth in 2018 June. These observations allowed to determine an orbital period of the system in good agreement with the result of the radar observations. Our results also indicate that the 2017 YE5 system is not fully locked in a synchronous spin–orbit resonance, as there is a possible asynchronous component or tumbling rotator in the system. Additional data obtained at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de San Pedro Mártir (OAN-SPM, Mexico) in 2018 August allowed to derive the colour indices and the low-resolution spectrum, which indicate that the object has a very reddish surface similar to the outer Solar system objetcs. This is consistent with a dark albedo of about 3 per cent, derived from an effective diameter of the combined components and an absolute magnitude of 19.2. Infrared data obtained at the NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility exhibit a thermal emission in the 2.5 |$\mu$| m range for which a low albedo of 2–4 per cent was adjusted by applying a thermal model. Regarding to the taxonomic classification, we found that the 2017 YE5 is a D-type in the Bus-DeMeo taxonomy. Therefore, according to our results and considering that the 2017 YE5 system has a typical comet orbit (T J = 2.87), we suggest that it is a dormant Jupiter-family binary comet. Many remote sensing‐based evapotranspiration (RSBET) algorithms have been proposed in the past decades and evaluated using flux tower data, mainly over North America and Europe. Model evaluation across South America has been done locally or using only a single algorithm at a time. Here, we provide the first evaluation of multiple RSBET models, at a daily scale, across a wide variety of biomes, climate zones, and land uses in South America. We used meteorological data from 25 flux towers to force four RSBET models: Priestley–Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory (PT‐JPL), Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), Penman–Monteith Mu model (PM‐MOD), and Penman–Monteith Nagler model (PM‐VI). ET was predicted satisfactorily by all four models, with correlations consistently higher (R2>0.6) for GLEAM and PT‐JPL, and PM‐MOD and PM‐VI presenting overall better responses in terms of percent bias (−10

The search for sustainability in integrated production systems is a constant challenge, especially when it comes to balancing the levels of shading provided by trees in agroforestry systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of three shading levels (0, 30 and 60%) casted by native Babaçú trees (Attalea speciosa, Mart) on the agronomic and structural characteristics of Mombaça grass in the ecotone Cerrado-Amazon. A total area of 3 ha was stratified into 36 subdivisions measuring 270 m² each, in order to collect agronomic samples from the three shading levels, totaling 108 experimental units, where the structural and agronomic characteristics of Mombaça grass were assessed. Increased shading leads to reduction in tiller population density, forage volumetric density, leaf area index and yield and proportion of morphological components of Mombaça grass, reducing forage yield. The 65% and 78% reduction in tiller population in areas with 30 and 60% shading, respectively, in comparison to full sun light exposure, was the main factor in the reduced productivity of the grasses managed in the agropastoral system. Therefore, Mombaça grass should be managed at a level of 30% shading, which can be considered adequate to maximize forage yield, balancing the benefits of soil and water conservation with the possible negative impacts on forage production. Nowadays, primary productivity variations at the SW Iberian Margin (IbM) are primarily controlled by wind‐driven upwelling. Thus, major changes in atmospheric circulation and wind regimes between the Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 12 and 9 could have driven substantial changes in phytoplankton productivity which remains poorly understood. We present a high‐resolution calcareous nannofossil record from the Shackleton Site Integrated Ocean Discovery Program Site U1385 that allow the assessment of primary productivity and changing surface conditions on orbital and suborbital timescales over the SW IbM. These records are directly compared and integrated with terrestrial – Mediterranean forest pollen – and marine – benthic and planktic oxygen stable isotopes (δ18O), alkenone concentration [C37], Uk´37‐Sea Surface Temperature and % C37:4 – proxy records from Site U1385. Our results indicate intra‐interglacial increase in primary productivity together with intensification of the Azores anticyclonic high‐pressure cell beyond the summer that suggests a two‐phase upwelling behavior during the full interglacial MIS 11c (∼420–397 ka), potentially drived by atmospheric NAO‐like variability. Primary productivity is largely enhanced during the inception of glacial MIS 10 and the early MIS 10 (∼392–356 ka), linked to intensified upwelling and associated processes during a period of strengthened atmospheric circulation. In agreement with the conditions observed during Heinrich events of the last glacial cycle, primary productivity reductions during abrupt cold episodes, including the Heinrich‐type (Ht) events 4 to 1 (∼436, 392, 384 and 339 ka) and the Terminations V and IV, seems to be the result of halocline formation induced by meltwater arrival, reducing the regional upward nutrient transference. Background: Infection by nematodes is a problem for human health, livestock, and agriculture, as it causes deficits in host health, increases production costs, and incurs a reduced food supply. The control of these parasites is usually done using anthelmintics, which, in most cases, have not been fully effective. Therefore, the search for new molecules with anthelmintic potential is necessary. Methods: In the present study, we isolated and characterized molecules from the nematophagous fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia and tested these compounds on three nematodes: Caenorhabditis elegans; Ancylostoma ceylanicum; and Ascaris suum. Results: The ethyl acetate extract showed nematicidal activity on the nematode model C. elegans. We identified the major substance present in two sub-fractions of this extract as ketamine. Then, we tested this compound on C. elegans and the parasites A. ceylanicum and A. suum using hamsters and mice as hosts, respectively. We did not find a difference between the animal groups when considering the number of worms recovered from the intestines of animals treated with ketamine (6 mg) and albendazole (P > 0.05). The parasite burden of larvae recovered from the lungs of mice treated with ketamine was similar to those treated with ivermectin. Conclusions: The results presented here demonstrate the nematicidal activity of ketamine in vitro and in vivo, thus confirming the nematicidal potential of the molecule present in the fungus P. chlamydosporia may consist of a new method of controlling parasites. The information survey and the land use and land cover (LULC) change monitoring are essential to understand the changes in the landscape and their impacts on the environment. The Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) constitutes the second largest biome in Brazil and is highly relevant because of its rich biodiversity. The Cerrado in the Maranhão State is facing a high conversion rate of its natural vegetation into agricultural systems because of the agricultural development policies. This article aims to analyze and quantify the LULCC in the Chapadinha microregion, Maranhão State, Brazil, by comparing Landsat satellite images from 2000, 2009, and 2019. The Chapadinha microregion covers an area of more than 14,000 km2 and, since 2000, presents significant spatial transformations related to agricultural expansion. The goal of this expansion is the economic development based on agricultural commodities (mainly soybean monoculture) for exportation. The study area is the third microregion in terms of agricultural production in Maranhão. The satellite image interpretation showed a reduction of more than 800 km2 of natural vegetation. We performed a process called SAR Interferometry (InSAR) to generate Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from data pairs of the PALSAR-2 Synthetic Aperture Radar, from the ALOS-2 satellite. The pair of images used is a permutation between all acquired acquisitions of SAR data from ALOS-2, more precisely, we used data from two satellite passages (temporally spaced) in which the sensor was imaging the same area on the ground. There were PALSAR-2 L-Band Ultrafine images with an interval of 14 days between acquisitions (which is precisely the revisit time of the satellite) from two forest regions in the Paran´a state, Brazil. After the generation of the DEM, we observed a systematic error that generated a kind of very sharp ramp in the azimuthal direction. In this paper we present the followed steps and the investigation carried out to discover the causes of the error. We could observe that the satellite paths on the two dates suffer a relative displacement between them. In other words, this error occurs due to a non-constant baseline. Lightning discharge activity causes overvoltages in the electric power system, which may result in damage to the equipment and apparatus of the system. The lightning incidence is divided into two types: direct strikes and side strikes [1–4]. Direct strikes are lightning discharges that directly hit the line, structure or equipment, resulting in overvoltages of higher amplitudes. However, they are less common than side strikes, which are discharges that occur near the electric system and induce overvoltages of lower amplitudes than direct strikes, but may also cause damage in the distribution network. Planktonic foraminifera δ18O and Mg/Ca ratios are widely considered as a powerful proxy to reconstruct past seawater‐column temperature. Due to the complex interpretation of planktonic foraminifera δ18O data in regard to past seawater temperatures, temperature determination based on the foraminifera shell Mg/Ca ratio is believed to be more accurate. Scarce Mg/Ca calibration data exists for coastal upwelling regions, resulting in incoherent results of past seawater reconstructions. The current study along the NW Iberia coastal upwelling system intends to define the best Mg/Ca temperature equation for the most representative species of this region (Neogloboquadrina incompta, Globigerina bulloides, and Globorotalia inflata). Seawater temperature from δ18O and Mg/Ca of these three planktonic foraminifera species was compared with the surface sediments alkenone derived SST and with the in situ temperatures measured at the depths where these foraminifera species currently live and calcify. The equations that better reflect each species calcification depth were selected as our regional equations for δ18O and Mg/Ca temperature reconstructions. The δ18O‐estimated temperatures for surface sediment specimens were comparable with in situ seawater‐column temperature measurements, whereas the Mg/Ca derived temperatures seem to underestimate in situ values, in special for G. bulloides from samples affected by stronger coastal upwelling. The G. bulloides δ18O and Mg/Ca estimated temperatures from samples located offshore, further from coastal upwelling influence, are comparable to surface sediment alkenone derived temperatures. Our study shows that in upwelling areas, regional calibration of planktonic foraminifera Mg/Ca temperature equations is necessary for reliable interpretations of high‐resolution past temperature variability in these important environments. Analyses of data from spectroscopic and astrometric surveys have led to conflicting results concerning the vertical characteristics of the Milky Way. Ages are often used to provide clarity, but typical uncertainties of >40 per cent from photometry restrict the validity of the inferences made. Using the Kepler APOKASC sample for context, we explore the global population trends of two K2 campaign fields (3 and 6), which extend further vertically out of the Galactic plane than APOKASC. We analyse the properties of red giant stars utilizing three asteroseismic data analysis methods to cross-check and validate detections. The Bayesian inference tool PARAM is used to determine the stellar masses, radii, and ages. Evidence of a pronounced red giant branch bump and an [α/Fe] dependence on the position of the red clump is observed from the K2 fields radius distribution. Two peaks in the age distribution centred at ∼5 and ∼12 Gyr are found using a sample with σage < 35 per cent. In comparison with Kepler , we find the older peak to be more prominent for K2. This age bimodality is also observed based on a chemical selection of low-[α/Fe] (≤0.1) and high-[α/Fe] (>0.1) stars. As a function of vertical distance from the Galactic mid-plane (| Z |), the age distribution shows a transition from a young to old stellar population with increasing | Z | for the K2 fields. Further coverage of campaign targets with high-resolution spectroscopy is required to increase the yield of precise ages achievable with asteroseismology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe a Bayesian model for simultaneous linear quantile regression at several specified quantile levels. More specifically, we propose to model the conditional distributions by using random probability measures, known as quantile pyramids, introduced by Hjort and Walker. Unlike many existing approaches, this framework allows us to specify meaningful priors on the conditional distributions, while retaining the flexibility afforded by the nonparametric error distribution formulation. Simulation studies demonstrate the flexibility of the proposed approach in estimating diverse scenarios, generally outperforming other competitive methods. We also provide conditions for posterior consistency. The method is particularly promising for modeling the extremal quantiles. Context. Very metal-poor halo stars are the best candidates for being among the oldest objects in our Galaxy. Samples of halo stars with age determination and detailed chemical composition measurements provide key information for constraining the nature of the first stellar generations and the nucleosynthesis in the metal-poor regime. Aims. Age estimates are very uncertain and are available for only a small number of metal-poor stars. We present the first results of a pilot programme aimed at deriving precise masses, ages, and chemical abundances for metal-poor halo giants using asteroseismology and high-resolution spectroscopy. Methods. We obtained high-resolution UVES spectra for four metal-poor RAVE stars observed by the K2 satellite. Seismic data obtained from K2 light curves helped improve spectroscopic temperatures, metallicities, and individual chemical abundances. Mass and ages were derived using the code PARAM, investigating the effects of different assumptions (e.g. mass loss and [α/Fe]-enhancement). Orbits were computed using Gaia DR2 data. Results. The stars are found to be normal metal-poor halo stars (i.e. non C-enhanced), and an abundance pattern typical of old stars (i.e. α and Eu-enhanced), and have masses in the 0.80−1.0 M⊙ range. The inferred model-dependent stellar ages are found to range from 7.4 Gyr to 13.0 Gyr with uncertainties of ∼30%−35%. We also provide revised masses and ages for metal-poor stars with Kepler seismic data from the APOGEE survey and a set of M4 stars. Conclusions. The present work shows that the combination of asteroseismology and high-resolution spectroscopy provides precise ages in the metal-poor regime. Most of the stars analysed in the present work (covering the metallicity range of [Fe/H] ∼ −0.8 to −2 dex) are very old >9 Gyr (14 out of 19 stars), and all of the stars are older than >5 Gyr (within the 68 percentile confidence level). Brachypodium distachyon is successfully used as a model grass species. The present study used molecular and chemical approaches to investigate the effects of the addition of the cytokinin 6-benzyladenine (BA) and two levels of gas exchange on the transcriptional regulation of lignin biosynthesis in B. distachyon. It was observed that the control of lignin biosynthesis is affected by both BA and the in vitro gas exchange rate, by sealing the vial with absence or presence of membranes. These observations are supported by anatomical and antioxidant enzyme activity analyses. However, the hyperhydricity caused by BA did not affect cell wall properties in B. distachyon. Interestingly, the CCR1 gene presented 70-fold increase in expression under the effect of BA and without membranes in addition to a significant increase in the peroxidases activity and total lignin content. Treatments with gas exchange showed higher qualitative accumulation of lignin S/G. Lignin pathway genes were transcriptionally coordinated according to the imposed treatment with apparent co-expression. Low expression of these genes was observed in the sealing treatment without membranes, while the opposite was verified in the condition of sealing with two membranes. CESA4 and CESA7 genes responded positively to gas exchange, without altering the cell wall cellulose/lignin ratio in B. distachyon. These results contribute to a better understanding of how cell wall-related gene expression is regulated by exogenous factors, as well as the many possibilities of cell wall manipulation due to its plasticity in adaptive responses. Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of diets containing pearl millet silage ammoniated with urea on the intake, digestibility, production performance, and nitrogen metabolism of lambs. Thirty‐two uncastrated mixed‐breed lambs at 4 to 5 months of age, with an average initial body weight of 17.39 ± 2.16 kg, were distributed into four treatments in a randomized block experimental design with eight replicates. Experimental diets consisted of pearl millet silage ammoniated with urea during ensiling at the levels of 0, 20, 40, and 60 g/kg dry matter (DM). Increasing urea levels in the pearl millet silage led to a linear decrease (p < .05) in the intakes of DM, organic matter, and total digestible nutrients by the lambs. Total and average daily weight gains decreased linearly (p < .05) with the addition of urea to the silage. Intake and digestibility of crude protein, nitrogen intake, urine urea nitrogen, plasma urea nitrogen, microbial synthesis, and microbial efficiency had a quadratic response (p < .05) to the urea levels in the silage. Pearl millet silage ammoniated with urea reduces dry‐matter intake and daily weight gain in lambs. Urea is not recommended for use in the ensiling of pearl millet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cellular mechanisms induced by elevated temperature on oocytes are not fully understood. However, there is evidence that some of the deleterious effects of heat shock are mediated by a heat-induced increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this context, carotenoid antioxidants might have a thermoprotective effect. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the role of astaxanthin (AST) on oocyte ROS production and on the redox profile and developmental competency of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) after 14 h heat shock (41°C) during in vitro maturation (IVM). Exposure of oocytes to heat shock during IVM increased ROS and reduced the ability of the oocyte to cleave and develop to the blastocyst stage. However, 12.5 and 25 nM astaxanthin rescued these negative effects of heat shock; astaxanthin counteracted the heat shock-induced increase in ROS and restored oocyte developmental competency. There was no effect of astaxanthin on maturation medium lipid peroxidation or on glutathione peroxidase and catalase activity in oocytes and cumulus cells. However, astaxanthin stimulated superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in heat-shocked cumulus cells. In conclusion, direct heat shock reduced oocyte competence, which was restored by astaxanthin, possibly through regulation of ROS and SOD activity in oocytes and COCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measurements of hyperpolarized 13C label exchange between injected [1‐13C]pyruvate and the endogenous tumor lactate pool can give an apparent first‐order rate constant for the exchange. The determination of the isotope flux, however, requires an estimate of the labeled pyruvate concentration in the tumor. This was achieved here by measurement of the tumor uptake of [1‐14C]pyruvate, which showed that <2% of the injected pyruvate reached the tumor site. Multiplication of this estimated labeled pyruvate concentration in the tumor with the apparent first‐order rate constant for hyperpolarized 13C label exchange gave an isotope flux that showed good agreement with a flux determined directly by the injection of non‐polarized [3‐13C]pyruvate, rapid excision of the tumor after 30 s and measurement of 13C‐labeled lactate concentrations in tumor extracts. The distribution of labeled lactate between intra‐ and extracellular compartments and the blood pool was investigated by imaging, by measurement of the labeled lactate concentration in blood and tumor, and by examination of the effects of a gadolinium contrast agent and a lactate transport inhibitor on the intensity of the hyperpolarized [1‐13C]lactate signal. These measurements showed that there was significant export of labeled lactate from the tumor, but that labeled lactate in the blood pool produced by the injection of hyperpolarized [1‐13C]pyruvate showed only relatively low levels of polarization. This study shows that measurements of hyperpolarized 13C label exchange between pyruvate and lactate in a murine tumor model can provide an estimate of the true isotope flux if the concentration of labeled pyruvate that reaches the tumor can be determined. Light quality is perceived by plants through several receptors and generates diverse morphological, metabolic, and genetic responses. In this study, the identification of new putative lignocellulosic genes, expression analysis, as well as morphological, anatomical, enzymatic, and chemical characteristics were investigated in Brachypodium distachyon plants grown in vitro under different light treatments. Treatments with fluorescent lamps (FL), white light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, and blue/red (B/R) LED bulbs showed different effects on B. distachyon, acting on specific targets to promote functional adaptation. The FL, traditionally used in growth rooms, led to higher growth rates and deposition of S and G lignins, greater cellulose content, and higher expression of cellulose-synthase 4 (BbCESA4) and cellulose-synthase 7 (BdCESA7) genes. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (BdPAL1) and ferulate-5-hydroxylase (BdF5H1) genes were upregulated in plants exposed to B/R LED light when compared to those grown under FL and white LED light, while other analyzed genes did not vary in expression among treatments. BdCESA4 was downregulated under B/R LED light, light quality that led to smaller plants, with increased lignin content, higher abundance of G lignin than S lignin, and decreased total cellulose content compared to the other treatments. In white LED light, both BdCESA4 and BdCESA7 were downregulated compared to FL, in addition to a significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities. The spectral quality of the LED bulbs altered lignin and cellulose contents, expression of their synthesis-route genes, as well as anatomical and antioxidative defense mechanisms. In this study, we investigated hollow AgAu nanoparticles with the goal of improving our understanding of the composition-dependent catalytic activity of these nanoparticles. AgAu nanoparticles were synthesized via the galvanic replacement method with controlled size and nanoparticle compositions. We studied extinction spectra with UV-Vis spectroscopy and simulations based on Mie theory and the boundary element method, and ultrafast spectroscopy measurements to characterize decay constants and the overall energy transfer dynamics as a function of AgAu composition. Electron–phonon coupling times for each composition were obtained from pump–power dependent pump–probe transients. These spectroscopic studies showed how nanoscale surface segregation, hollow interiors and porosity affect the surface plasmon resonance wavelength and fundamental electron–phonon coupling times. Analysis of the spectroscopic data was used to correlate electron–phonon coupling times to AgAu composition, and thus to surface segregation and catalytic activity. We have performed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of model hollow AgAu core–shell nanoparticles to characterize nanoparticle stability and equilibrium structures, besides providing atomic level views of nanoparticle surface segregation. Overall, the basic atomistic and electron-lattice dynamics of core–shell AgAu nanoparticles characterized here thus aid the mechanistic understanding and performance optimization of AgAu nanoparticle catalysts. Brachypodium distachyon, a model species for forage grasses and cereal crops, has been used in studies seeking improved biomass production and increased crop yield for biofuel production purposes. Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is the morphogenetic pathway that supports in vitro regeneration of such species. However, there are gaps in terms of studies on the metabolic profile and genetic stability along successive subcultures. The physiological variables and the metabolic profile of embryogenic callus (EC) and embryogenic structures (ES) from successive subcultures (30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, and 360-day-old subcultures) were analyzed. Canonical discriminant analysis separated EC into three groups: 60, 90, and 120 to 240 days. EC with 60 and 90 days showed the highest regenerative potential. EC grown for 90 days and submitted to SE induction in 2 mg L−1 of kinetin-supplemented medium was the highest ES producer. The metabolite profiles of non-embryogenic callus (NEC), EC, and ES submitted to principal component analysis (PCA) separated into two groups: 30 to 240- and 360-dayold calli. The most abundant metabolites for these groups were malonic acid, tryptophan, asparagine, and erythrose. PCA of ES also separated ages into groups and ranked 60- and 90-day-old calli as the best for use due to their high levels of various metabolites. The key metabolites that distinguished the ES groups were galactinol, oxaloacetate, tryptophan, and valine. In addition, significant secondary metabolites (e.g., caffeoylquinic, cinnamic, and ferulic acids) were important in the EC phase. Ferulic, cinnamic, and phenylacetic acids marked the decreases in the regenerative capacity of ES in B. distachyon. Decreased accumulations of the amino acids aspartic acid, asparagine, tryptophan, and glycine characterized NEC, suggesting that these metabolites are indispensable for the embryogenic competence in B. distachyon. The genetic stability of the regenerated plants was evaluated by flow cytometry, showing that ploidy instability in regenerated plants from B. distachyon calli is not correlated with callus age. Taken together, our data indicated that the loss of regenerative capacity in B. distachyon EC occurs after 120 days of subcultures, demonstrating that the use of EC can be extended to 90 days. Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Gennadius) is one of the most important soybean pest worldwide. Herein, 15 soybean genotypes were evaluated, to characterize the occurrence of antixenosis to B. tabaci biotype B. Initially, a multiple-choice test with all genotypes was carried out, evaluating the settling and oviposition preference at 3 d after infestation, and the colonization by nymphs after 48 d of infestation. Subsequently, a no-choice test, using 14 genotypes, was conducted with infested plants individually, and the number of eggs was counted after 72 h. Then, 10 genotypes were selected (indicative of resistance and susceptibility), which were evaluated for whitefly settling 24, 48, and 72 h after infestation and for oviposition 72 h after infestation. The trichomes of the leaflets were characterized for density, size, and inclination to establish possible correlations with the settling and oviposition in the genotypes. In the first multiple-choice test, involving 15 genotypes, 'IAC-17,' 'IAC-19,' and UX-2569-159 expressed antixenosis against B. tabaci. 'Jackson,' 'P98Y11,' and PI-229358 exhibited the same behavior in the no-choice test. In the multiple-choice test, 'Jackson,' 'P98Y11,' and 'TMG1176 RR' were the least attractive and least used for oviposition. The antixenosis shown by 'Jackson,' 'P98Y11,' and PI-229358 may be related to the characteristics of the trichomes (lower density and inclined). Based on the experiments carried out, 'IAC-17,' 'IAC-19,' 'Jackson,' 'P98Y11,' PI-229358, TMG1176 RR, and UX-2569-159 are considered promising for resistance to B. tabaci biotype B and may be exploited in soybean breeding programs for resistance to insects. A two-stage approach is proposed to overcome the problem in quantile regression, where separately fitted curves for several quantiles may cross. The standard Bayesian quantile regression model is applied in the first stage, followed by a Gaussian process regression adjustment, which monotonizes the quantile function while borrowing strength from nearby quantiles. The two-stage approach is computationally efficient, and more general than existing techniques. We present a set of 87 RAVE stars with detected solar like oscillations, observed during Campaign 1 of the K2 mission (RAVE K2-C1 sample). This data set provides a useful benchmark for testing the gravities provided in RAVE data release 4 (DR4), and is key for the calibration of the RAVE data release 5 (DR5). The RAVE survey collected medium-resolution spectra (R = 7500) centred in the Ca II triplet(8600 Å) wavelength interval, which although being very useful for determining radial velocity and metallicity, even at low S/N, is known be affected by a log (g)-Teff degeneracy. This degeneracy is the cause of the large spread in the RAVE DR4 gravities for giants. The understanding of the trends and offsets that affects RAVE atmospheric parameters, and in particular log (g), is a crucial step in obtaining not only improved abundance measurements, but also improved distances and ages. In the present work, we use two different pipelines, GAUFRE and Sp_Ace, to determine atmospheric parameters and abundances by fixing log (g) to the seismic one. Our strategy ensures highly consistent values among all stellar parameters, leading to more accurate chemical abundances. A comparison of the chemical abundances obtained here with and without the use of seismic log(g) information has shown that an underestimated (overestimated) gravity leads to an underestimated (overestimated) elemental abundance (e.g. [Mg/H] is underestimated by ~0.25 dex when the gravity is underestimated by 0.5 dex). We then perform a comparison between the seismic gravities and the spectroscopic gravities presented in the RAVE DR4 catalogue, extracting a calibration for log(g) of RAVE giants in the colour interval 0.50 < (J-KS) < 0.85. Finally, we show a comparison of the distances, temperatures, extinctions (and ages) derived here for our RAVE K2-C1 sample with those derived in RAVE DR4 and DR5. DR5 performs better than DR4 thanks to the seismic calibration, although discrepancies can still be important for objects for which the difference between DR4/DR5 and seismic gravities differ by more than ~0.5 dex. The method illustrated in this work will be used for analysing RAVE targets present in the other K2 campaigns, in the framework of Galactic Archaeology investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using combined asteroseismic and spectroscopic observations of 418 red-giant stars close to the Galactic disc plane (6 kpc < RGal≤ 13 kpc, &#124ZGal|< 0:3 kpc), we measure the age dependence of the radial metallicity distribution in the Milky Way's thin disc over cosmic time. The slope of the radial iron gradient of the young red-giant population (-0.058 ± 0.008 [stat.] ±0.003 [syst.] dex/kpc) is consistent with recent Cepheid measurements. For stellar populations with ages of 1-4 Gyr the gradient is slightly steeper, at a value of -0.066 ± 0.007 ± 0.002 dex/kpc, and then flattens again to reach a value of 0:03 dex/kpc for stars with ages between 6 and 10 Gyr. Our results are in good agreement with a state-of-the-art chemo-dynamical Milky-Way model in which the evolution of the abundance gradient and its scatter can be entirely explained by a non-varying negative metallicity gradient in the interstellar medium, together with stellar radial heating and migration. We also offer an explanation for why intermediate-age open clusters in the solar neighbourhood can be more metal-rich, and why their radial metallicity gradient seems to be much steeper than that of the youngest clusters. Already within 2 Gyr, radial mixing can bring metal-rich clusters from the innermost regions of the disc to Galactocentric radii of 5 to 8 kpc. We suggest that these outward-migrating clusters may be less prone to tidal disruption and therefore steepen the local intermediate-age cluster metallicity gradient. Our scenario also explains why the strong steepening of the local iron gradient with age is not seen in field stars. In the near future, asteroseismic data from the K2 mission will allow for improved statistics and a better coverage of the inner-disc regions, thereby providing tighter constraints on the evolution of the central parts of the Milky Way. With the advent of the space missions CoRoT and Kepler, it has recently become feasible to determine precise asteroseismic masses and relative ages for large samples of red giant stars. We present the CoRoGEE dataset, obtained from CoRoT light curves for 606 red giants in two fields of the Galactic disc that have been co-observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). We used the Bayesian parameter estimation code PARAM to calculate distances, extinctions, masses, and ages for these stars in a homogeneous analysis, resulting in relative statistical uncertainties of .2% in distance, ~4% in radius, ~9% in mass and ~25% in age. We also assessed systematic age uncertainties stemming from different input physics and mass loss. We discuss the correlation between ages and chemical abundance patterns of field stars over a broad radial range of the Milky Way disc (5 kpc < RGal < 14 kpc), focussing on the [ /Fe]-[Fe/H]-age plane in five radial bins of the Galactic disc. We find an overall agreement with the expectations of pure chemical-evolution models computed before the present data were available, especially for the outer regions. However, our data also indicate that a significant fraction of stars now observed near and beyond the solar neighbourhood migrated from inner regions. Mock CoRoGEE observations of a chemodynamical Milky Way disc model indicate that the number of high-metallicity stars in the outer disc is too high to be accounted for even by the strong radial mixing present in the model. The mock observations also show that the age distribution of the [ /Fe]-enhanced sequence in the CoRoGEE inner-disc field is much broader than expected from a combination of radial mixing and observational errors. We suggest that a thick-disc/bulge component that formed stars for more than 3 Gyr may account for these discrepancies. Our results are subject to future improvements due to (a) the still low statistics, because our sample had to be sliced into bins of Galactocentric distances and ages; (b) large uncertainties in proper motions (and therefore guiding radii); and (c) corrections to the asteroseismic mass-scaling relation. The situation will improve not only upon the upcoming Gaia data releases, but also with the foreseen increase in the number of stars with both seismic and spectroscopic information. Nowadays large spectroscopic surveys, like the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES), provide unique stellar databases for better investigating the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. Great attention must be paid to the accuracy of the basic stellar properties derived: large uncertainties in stellar parameters lead to large uncertainties in abundances, distances and ages. Asteroseismology has a key role in this context: when seismic information is combined with information derived from spectroscopic analysis, highly precise constraints on distances, masses, extinction and ages of red giants can be obtained. In the light of this promising joint action, we started the CoRoT-GES collaboration. We present a set of 1111 CoRoT stars, observed by GES from December 2011 to July 2014, these stars belong to the CoRoT field LRc01, pointing at the inner Galactic disk. Among these stars, 534 have reliable global seismic parameters. By combining seismic informations and spectroscopy, we derived precise stellar parameters, ages, kinematic and orbital parameters and detailed element abundances for this sample of stars. We also show that, thanks to asteroseismology, we are able to obtain a higher precision than what can be achieved by the standard spectroscopic means. This sample of CoRoT red giants, spanning Galactocentric distances from 5 to 8 kpc and a wide age interval (1-13 Gyr), provides us a representative sample for the inner disk population. In a companion paper, we have presented the combined asteroseismic-spectroscopic dataset obtained from CoRoT light curves and APOGEE infra-red spectra for 606 solar-like oscillating red giants in two fields of the Galactic disc (CoRoGEE). We have measured chemical abundance patterns, distances, and ages of these field stars which are spread over a large radial range of the Milky Way's disc. Here we show how to simulate this dataset using a chemodynamical Galaxy model. We also demonstrate how the observation procedure influences the accuracy of our estimated ages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
