Development of effective monitoring programs and early alert systems of cyanobacterial harmful blooms (CyanoHABs) is a challenge due to their rapid temporal dynamics and high spatial heterogeneity. We provide a new approach for monitoring CyanoHABs in large ecosystems using a strategy combining modeling with in situ data and remote sensing methods. Between 2014 and 2021, we sampled phytoplankton and measured temperature and conductivity (continuously) at a coastal site at the Río de la Plata estuary (South America). We used a Bayesian model to predict favorable conditions for bloom occurrences, using temperature and conductivity (a proxy for salinity). We defined a polygon area of 40 km2 and obtained 121 cloud-free satellite images (Sentinel-2) in which 10 "small" (< 1% of polygon), 4 "medium" (> 1% and < 5%), and 2 "large" (> 5%) blooms were detected. A 7-day period of favorable environmental conditions was the best time frame to predict large blooms and medium size blooms. Integrating the bloom extent with modeling outputs generates valuable new information for management. The continuous model predictions allow for evaluation of the persistence/growth of blooms and they fill in an important gap for management when images are not available (i.e., cloud cover). We propose a monitoring strategy that combines information about the size of the remotely detected blooms with in situ conditions to evaluate the actions that stakeholders should take. A ceramic-metal composite was produced by using the sol–gel method and the electrospinning technique as a potential enhancement substrate for infrared spectroscopy. The precursor solution of tetraethyl orthosilicate, aluminum nitrate, and zirconium butoxide was mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone and then electrospun into nonwoven fibrous membranes. The membranes were sintered, decorated with silver nanoparticles, and characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The ceramic membranes were composed of cylindrical fibers with an average diameter of ∼190 nm with a smooth surface and spherical particles with an average diameter of ∼9 nm embedded evenly on top. The enhancement capacity of the substrates was tested using pyridine at different concentrations with infrared spectroscopy. An enhancement factor of approximately 1 × 106 times for the signal of pyridine 1 nM was achievable, showing the material is a promising alternative to a low-cost nanostructured surface enhancement substrate for infrared spectroscopy. Freshwater fishes exhibit a wide range of auditory adaptations and capabilities, which are assumed to help them navigate their environment, avoid predators, and find potential mates. Yet, we know very little about how freshwater environments sound to fish, or how fish with different auditory adaptations respond to different soundscapes. We first compiled data on fish hearing acuity and adaptations and provided a portrait of how anthropogenic sounds compare to natural sounds in different freshwater soundscapes. We then conducted a sound‐enrichment field experiment at Lake Saint Pierre, a large fluvial lake in Canada, to evaluate the effect of motorboat sound exposure on the fish community by looking at the extent to which changes in species abundances were linked to auditory adaptations. Data compilation showed that the hearing acuity of most species overlaps with a wide range of ambient and anthropogenic underwater sounds while the field experiment showed that species with more specialized auditory structures were captured less often in sound‐enriched traps, indicating avoidance behavior. Our findings highlight the importance of considering species' sensorial adaptations when evaluating the community‐scale effects of anthropogenic sounds on the fish community, especially at low levels of anthropogenic activity. The current work shows the optimization of the preparation of nanosized titanium carbide in situ through mechanical alloying. Metallic titanium powders, along with two carbon sources, carbon nanotubes, and stearic acid, were used to reduce the particle size (around 11 nm) using an SPEX 800 high-energy mill. The combined use of 2 wt % of these carbon sources and n-heptane as a liquid process control agent proved crucial in generating nanoscale powder composites through a simple and scalable synthesis process within a 4 h timeframe. The uses of 20 wt % of both carbon sources were compared to determine the ability of carbon nanotubes to form carbides and the decomposition of process control agent during mechanical milling. The structure of the composites and starting materials were evaluated through X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, while the morphology features (average particle size and shape) were monitored via scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is heterogeneous in distribution pattern and clinical features. This analysis assessed the effect of dupilumab on the extent and severity of AD across various signs (erythema, edema/papulation, excoriation, lichenification) in different anatomical regions (head and neck, trunk, upper extremities, lower extremities) in patients aged 6 months to 5 years. Methods: In LIBERTY AD PRESCHOOL, a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase III clinical trial, children aged 6 months to 5 years with moderate-to-severe AD were randomized 1:1 to subcutaneous dupilumab or placebo with concomitant low-potency topical corticosteroids (TCS) every 4 weeks for 16 weeks. Changes in AD signs across anatomical regions were assessed using unweighted Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) body region scores. Results: Overall, 162 patients were randomized to dupilumab (n = 83) or placebo (n = 79). A significant improvement in least squares mean EASI area score was seen by week 2 in all four anatomical regions (P < 0.0001 for dupilumab vs. placebo) and sustained throughout treatment. Least squares mean EASI sign scores in erythema, excoriations, and infiltration/papulation showed significant improvement by week 2 in all regions (P < 0.001), while lichenification showed significant improvement in all regions by week 4 (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Dupilumab use with concomitant low-potency TCS treatment resulted in rapid and consistent improvement in AD signs in all anatomical regions, in patients aged 6 months to 5 years with moderate-to-severe AD. Different Al–4Cu–1.5Mg/WC composites were synthesized through powder metallurgy to establish the effect of WC particle addition on the abrasive wear behavior of an Al–4Cu–1.5Mg (wt. %) alloy. The wear tests were performed using a pin-on-disc tribometer at room temperature in dry conditions using SiC abrasive sandpaper as a counterbody and tribometer of linear configuration. The results showed that WC additions increase the hardness of the Al–4Cu–1.5Mg alloy due to the strengthening effect of particle dispersion in the aluminum matrix, which generates an improvement in the wear resistance of the composites by preventing direct contact of the sample with the counterbody, in turn delaying the plastic deformation phenomena responsible for the degradation sequence. In addition, the dominant wear mechanism was abrasive wear, and the increased friction coefficient did not bring a rapid wear rate, which was related to the enhanced deformation resistance due to the high hardness. A documentary review was carried out on the production and publication of research papers related to the study of the variables INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE and AUTOMATIC LEARNING. The purpose of the bibliometric analysis proposed in this document was to know the main characteristics of the volume of publications registered in the Scopus database during the period 2017-2022 by Latin American institutions, achieving the identification of 196 publications. The information provided by this platform was organized through graphs and figures categorizing the information by Year of Publication, Country of Origin, Area of Knowledge and Type of Publication. Once these characteristics have been described, the position of different authors towards the proposed theme is referenced through a qualitative analysis. Among the main findings made through this research, it is found that Brazil with 104 publications was the Latin American country with the highest scientific production registered in the name of authors affiliated with institutions of that nation. The Area of Knowledge that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material referring to the study of Intelligent Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning was Computer Science with 151 published documents, and the Type of Publication most used during the period indicated above were Conference Articles with 55% of the total scientific production. Inflammatory, oxidative, and autoimmune responses cause severe damage to the nervous system inducing loss of myelin layers or demyelination. Even though demyelination is not considered a direct cause of skeletal muscle disease there is extensive damage in skeletal muscles following demyelination and impaired innervation. In vitro and in vivo evidence using exogenous antioxidants in models of demyelination is showing improvements in myelin formation alongside skeletal muscle recovery. For instance, exogenous antioxidants such as EGCG stimulate nerve structure maintenance, activation of glial cells, and reduction of oxidative stress. Consequently, this evidence is also showing structural and functional recovery of impaired skeletal muscles due to demyelination. Exogenous antioxidants mostly target inflammatory pathways and stimulate remyelinating mechanisms that seem to induce skeletal muscle regeneration. Therefore, the aim of this review is to describe recent evidence related to the molecular mechanisms in nerve and skeletal muscle regeneration induced by exogenous antioxidants. Temporary antibiotic-loaded cement spacers are widely used for treating chronic periprosthetic hip infections. The aim of this study is to evaluate the short-term tribological performance of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and (60Co) gamma-irradiated cross-linked UHMWPE (XLPE) self-mated systems as frictional pairs for temporary total hip spacers. A three-axial hip joint simulator, FIME II, was used to test the UHMWPE and XLPE self-mated systems under variable load profiles. A fetal bovine serum solution was used as a lubricant. After simulation tests, wear measurements of damaged coupled surfaces were made with a coordinate measuring machine. Finally, surfaces were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and nanoindentation tests. The mass loss test results for UHMWPE were 11.91 ± 3.43 mg for the cups and 4.57 ± 0.92 mg for the heads. Whereas, the results for XLPE showed a significant reduction, with mean mass loss values of 6.59 ± 0.14 mg for the cups and 2.82 ± 0.59 mg for the heads, suggesting the viability of the self-mated XLPE contact pair for a temporary total hip spacer. In recent years, engineering degree programs have become fundamental to the teaching of robotics and incorporate many fundamental STEM concepts. Some authors have proposed different platforms for teaching different topics related to robotics, but most of these platforms are not practical for classroom use. In the case of teaching autonomous navigation algorithms, the absence of platforms in classrooms limits learning because students are unable to perform practice activities or cannot evaluate and compare different navigation algorithms. The main contribution of this study is the implementation of a free platform for teaching autonomous-driving algorithms based on the Robot Operating System without the use of a physical robot. The authors present a case study using this platform as a teaching tool for instruction in two undergraduate robotic courses. Students evaluated the platform quantitatively and qualitatively. Our study demonstrates that professors and students can carry out different tests and compare different navigation algorithms to analyze their performance under the same conditions in class. In addition, the proposed platform provides realistic representations of environments and data visualizations. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been linked to the expression of Human Leukocyte Antigens, principally to the Major Histocompatibility Complex Class II, with only scarce reports of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I in specific populations. The objective of the present work was to explore the presence of polymorphisms in the MHC Class I related to T2D in the Mexican population using the Genome-Wide Association Studies Slim Initiative in Genomic Medicine of the Americas (GWAS SIGMA) database. This database contains information on 3848 Mexican individuals with T2D and 4366 control individuals from the same population without a clinical or hereditary history of the disease. The searching criteria considered a p-value of <0.005 and an odds ratio (OR) of >1.0. Ten novel, statistically significant nucleotide variants were identified: four polymorphisms associated with HLA-A (A*03:01:01:01) and six with HLA-C (C*01:02:01:01). These alleles have a high prevalence in Latin American populations and could potentially be associated with autoimmunity mechanisms related to the development of T2D complications. Surface texturing can be defined as a technique that consists of creating micro cavities in the surface of a material. There are different texturing techniques such as chemical etching, electromechanical micromachining, diamond embossing, electric discharge, pellet-pressing and laser surface, the last being the most common. For years, these surface texturing techniques have been used in tribological applications because microcavities can store oils or fluids and constantly lubricate the surfaces that are subjected to wear; they can also be used to trap wear particles (debris) that would otherwise act as abrasive particles (three body abrasive wear). This literature review seeks to analyse and compare the advantages that the use of surface texturing techniques can offer in reducing the wear of prosthetic components and therefore lengthening their useful life, to provide a better quality of life to patients. The results of this review showed a growing interest in the scientific community in the use of surface texturing for biotribogical applications, using to a greater extent the Laser Surface Texturing (LST) technique and the surface pattern composed by dimples. Breast cancer (BRCA) is a serious public health problem, as it is the most frequent malignant tumor in women worldwide. BRCA is a molecularly heterogeneous disease, particularly at gene expression (mRNAs) level. Recent evidence shows that coding RNAs represent only 34% of the total transcriptome in a human cell. The rest of the 66% of RNAs are non−coding, so we might be missing relevant biological, clinical or regulatory information. In this report, we identified two novel tumor types from TCGA with LINC00460 deregulation. We used survival analysis to demonstrate that LINC00460 expression is a marker for poor overall (OS), relapse-free (RFS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) in basal-like BRCA patients. LINC00460 expression is a potential marker for aggressive phenotypes in distinct tumors, including HPV-negative HNSC, stage IV KIRC, locally advanced lung cancer and basal-like BRCA. We show that the LINC00460 prognostic expression effect is tissue-specific, since its upregulation can predict poor OS in some tumors, but also predicts an improved clinical course in BRCA patients. We found that the LINC00460 expression is significantly enriched in the Basal-like 2 (BL2) TNBC subtype and potentially regulates the WNT differentiation pathway. LINC00460 can also modulate a plethora of immunogenic related genes in BRCA, such as SFRP5, FOSL1, IFNK, CSF2, DUSP7 and IL1A and interacts with miR-103-a-1, in-silico , which, in turn, can no longer target WNT7A. Finally, LINC00460:WNT7A ratio constitutes a composite marker for decreased OS and DMFS in Basal-like BRCA, and can predict anthracycline therapy response in ER-BRCA patients. In isotopic studies of mobile consumers, measurement error in spatial location is almost inevitable when individuals are observed only once. This error can have considerable impacts on the interpretation of ecologically important features, such as individual movement behaviour and dietary niche breadth. This study introduces a measurement error modelling framework for estimating movement scale and isotopic fractionation for consumers that move and feed along a linear isoscape gradient.The model assumes that the key mechanism underlying the difference in spatial isotopic regression slopes of mobile consumers and their baseline resources is the presence of measurement error in the spatial location of consumers. Measurement error is assumed to arise from consumer movements, which are represented by realistic movement kernels. Simulations with known parameter values are used to evaluate the performance of the models under scenarios involving different combinations of consumer mobility and sample size. Several variants of the model are fit to empirical data, and their parameter estimates are compared with those of alternative models.In simulations with known parameter values, model estimates of movement scale converged to the known values and had substantially smaller bias and variance than those of alternative models. Estimates of movement scale and fractionation for empirical data were consistent with previously reported estimates.Neglecting measurement error in spatial location is likely to hinder progress in spatial isotopic analyses. The proposed framework provides a statistically principled basis for incorporating measurement error in spatial location into isoscape analyses to provide improved estimates of parameters of interest, such as movement scale and fractionation. The framework is sufficiently general to be applicable to a variety of species, isotopic tracers, environments and spatial scales. Objective People diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) have fibrosis between the soft, connective, and neural tissues that could worsen the compression of the median nerve. The diacutaneous fibrolysis (DF) technique may release tissue adhesions and increase the mobility of connective tissues. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of DF in people with mild to moderate CTS on mechanosensitivity, disability, and nerve conduction studies. Methods This was a secondary analysis of a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Patients were recruited between April and September 2016 from the Department of Neurophysiology at the Hospital Miguel Servet, Zaragoza, Spain. Thirty-nine people (52 wrists) diagnosed with mild to moderate CTS were included. Participants were randomly assigned to either the DF group (n = 26) or the sham group (n = 26). Both groups received 5 therapy sessions, 2 sessions per week. Mechanosensitivity with the Upper Limb Neurodynamic Test 1, symptom severity and functional status with the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire, and median nerve sensory conduction velocity with nerve conduction studies were the outcomes measured. Assessments were recorded at baseline and after the intervention. Results The DF group showed significant improvements in the following: mechanosensitivity, with 28.46 degrees of elbow extension range of motion (95% CI = 19.2–37.7); an increase of 1.0 point (95% CI = 0.7–1.4) for the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire symptom severity and functional status score; and sensory conduction velocity of median nerve, which improved to 5.8 m/s (95% CI = 2.5–9.2). Conclusion Participants with mild to moderate CTS experienced improvements in symptom severity, functional status, mechanosensitivity, and nerve conduction studies after 5 sessions of DF. Theoretical and empirical studies often show that within populations, individuals vary in their propensity to disperse. We aspired to understand how this behavioural variation is impacted by the distribution and pattern of food patches across a landscape. In a series of experiments we examined how inter‐patch distance and the distribution of food patches influenced dispersal in wild‐type strains of Drosophila melanogaster with natural allelic variants of the foraging (for) gene known to influence dispersal in this species. The 'rover' strain was homozygous for the forR allele (more dispersive) whereas the 'sitter' strain was homozygous for fors (less dispersive). We also assessed an outbred population of flies with an unknown dispersal propensity. Dispersal was assayed in a multi‐patch lab arena (25 cells, 5 × 5 array). In the inter‐patch distance trials, landscapes of two different sizes (small versus large) were used, both with food in all 25 cells. Dispersal was reduced in the large landscape relative to the small landscape for all three fly strains. Sitter dispersal was lowest relative to both rovers and the outbred flies, whose dispersal tendencies were similar. In the patch distribution trials, flies were assayed in landscapes with varying distribution and number of cells containing food. Dispersal generally increased as the number of patches with food increased, however, rovers and sitters adopted similar dispersal strategies when food was fixed and limited. Conversely, their strategies differed when the total amount of food increased with the number of patches. We find that both the inter‐patch distance and distribution can influence dispersal. However, the effect of inter‐patch distance and distribution on dispersals depends on genotype × environment interaction. New fabrication methods are strongly demanded for the development of thin-film saturable absorbers with improved optical properties (absorption band, modulation depth, nonlinear optical response). In this sense, we investigate the performance of indium nitride (InN) epitaxial layers with low residual carrier concentration (<1018 cm−3), which results in improved performance at telecom wavelengths (1560 nm). These materials have demonstrated a huge modulation depth of 23% and a saturation fluence of 830 µJ/cm2, and a large saturable absorption around −3 × 104 cm/GW has been observed, attaining an enhanced, nonlinear change in transmittance. We have studied the use of such InN layers as semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) for an erbium (Er)-doped fiber laser to perform mode-locking generation at 1560 nm. Summary: Cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (CDDP), known as cisplatin, has been extensively used against breast cancer, which is the most frequent cancer among women, and lung cancer, the leading cancer that causes death worldwide. Novel compounds such as thiazole derivatives have exhibited antiproliferative activity, suggesting they could be useful against cancer treatment. Herein, we synthesized two novel thiosemicarbazones and an aldehyde to combine with CDDP to enhance efficacy against ER-positive breast MCF7 cancer cells, triple-negative/basal-B mammary carcinoma cells (MDA-MB231) and lung adenocarcinoma (A549) human cells. We synthesized 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(2-mercaptoetanothiolyl)benzaldehyde (ALD), 5-[(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thio]-2-furaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (TSC1) and 5-[(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thio]-2-furaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (TSC2) and used them alone or in combination with subtoxic CDDP concentrations to evaluate cytotoxicity, cytoskeleton integrity and mitochondrial function. We found that none of the synthesized compounds improved CDDP activity against MCF7 cell cultures; however, TSC2 was effective in enhancing the cytotoxicity of CDDP against MDA-MB231 and A549 cancer cell cultures. We demonstrated that the cytotoxic effect is related to the TSC2 capacity to induce disruption in the cytoskeleton network and to decrease mitochondrial function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children with atopic dermatitis (AD) are at risk for low bone mineral density (BMD), which is associated with an increased prevalence of osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fracture risk.1,2 Factors such as restricted nutrition, vitamin D deficiency, poor sleep and corticosteroid use contribute to lower bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) levels, a marker of bone mineralization, seen in children with moderate-to-severe AD compared with healthy children.³ A major determinant for the lifetime risk of fractures and osteoporosis is the magnitude of peak bone mass achieved during prepubescent years. Low BALP and BMD in children with moderate-to-severe AD could contribute to a higher prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis. The objective of this analysis is to report the impact of dupilumab treatment on markers of bone formation in children aged ≥ 6 to <12 years with moderate-to-severe AD. The analysis was performed retrospectively on sera from participants in LIBERTY AD PEDS (NCT03345914) and LIBERTY AD PED-OLE (NCT02612454). In LIBERTY AD PEDS, a double-blind, 16-week, phase 3 trial, children aged 6 to <12 years were randomized 1 : 1 : 1 to 300 mg dupilumab every 4 weeks (300 mg q4w), a weight-based regimen of dupilumab every 2 weeks (100 mg q2w for patients with baseline weight <30 kg, and 200 mg q2w for those with baseline weight ≥30 kg), or placebo; with concomitant medium-potency topical corticosteroids (TCS). After the initial 16-week trial, children aged 6 to <12 years were enrolled in the open-label extension study LIBERTY AD PED-OLE. Patients received dupilumab 300 mg q4w, which could be titrated up in case of inadequate clinical response at week 16 (200 mg q2w for patients with baseline weight <60 kg, and 300 mg q2w for those with baseline weight ≥60 kg); with concomitant medium-potency TCS. Bone biomarkers including BALP, procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide, C-terminal crosslinking telopeptide of type 1 collagen, osteocalcin, and insulin-like growth factor 1 were analysed at baseline, 8, 12, 16 and BALP only at 52 weeks. Dupilumab treatment led to a rapid and significant increase in geometric mean (standard error) levels of BALP in children with moderate-to-severe AD at 16 weeks compared with patients in the placebo group (77.7(1.02) μgL−1 vs. 65.0(1.04) μgL−1; P<0.0001). As well as a rapid and significant increase in BALP levels in children from the placebo group once they joined the OLE trial. BALP levels increased over 52 weeks in all treated children, reaching a level of 78–84 μgL−1 which constitutes a significant improvement compared with baseline, and is comparable to healthy reference intervals. An increasing trend from baseline to 16 weeks of dupilumab treatment was observed for other biomarkers, however, there was a limited number of data points due to insufficient volumes of serum available for analysis. These placebo-controlled results show, for the first time, a rapid and significant increase in BALP, and a possible trend in other biomarkers, in children with AD during treatment with dupilumab. The eight-and-a-half syndrome (EHS)—defined by the combination of a seventh cranial nerve palsy and an ipsilateral one-and-a-half syndrome—is a rare brainstem syndrome, which localises to the caudal tegmental region of the pons. We present a case of the EHS secondary to an inflammatory lesion on a previously healthy 26-year-old woman, with a literature review emphasising the relevance of aetiological assessment. This article discusses, from the perspective of women's history, the activity of the National Museum of Decorative Arts of Madrid (MNAD) during its first thirty years (1912-1942). This work is mainly focused on the role of the Museum in promoting the artistic education of Spanish women, an undertaking which is only possible in a political and intellectual context dominated by a reforming liberalism and which results in a deep understanding that, for the general good of society, women must be better educated. It also examines the development of the Museum's textile collection, on the grounds that it is closely related to the appreciation of work done by women, by the Museum's curators and by the Spanish intellectual élite of the time. The essay concludes with the idea that the MNAD was following the model established several decades before in Britain by the Victoria and Albert Museum, even though it is possible to detect some differences which are unique to this particular case. This paper focuses on the development and characterization of an ultrafast passively mode-locked fiber laser using InN-bulk as semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. The developed laser is polarization independent, and delivers a stable output emission of ultrashort pulses with time-width as short as 241 fs, centered at 1.5 μm, with 42 kW peak power. Purpose: Although significant differences in bone properties have been extensively studied, results vary when bones are exported to gamma radiation of a range usually used for sterilization purposes (25-35 kGy). Hence, the aim of this work was the study of the mechanical properties and microdamage development of human bones used as allografts following gamma-ray exposure, followed by an extensive statistical analysis of microdamage effects in fatigue behaviour. Methods: Specimens of the cortical region of human femurs were exposed to 15-25 kGy and 26-30 kGy radiation levels, then they were subjected to compression fatigue tests until fracture. The fatigue life was determined in relation to the radiation level, and the evolution of microdamage was assessed using fluorescence microscopy in order to calculate characteristic lengths of microcracks. Results: Significant differences in fatigue life were detected (p < 0.05) between non-radiated (control) and radiated specimens, resulting in a drastic 89.2% fatigue life reduction of the 15-25 kGy group, and 95.3% in the 26-30 kGy group, compared to the reference. Microdamage analysis showed a considerable increase in microcrack lengths when bone was exposed to gamma radiation, which may indicate that bones used as allografts could fracture at some point when subjected to loading conditions in vivo. Conclusions: The results of our research indicate that even if a range of 15-25 kGy is suggested to sterilize bone allografts, such practice needs to be reconsidered. In addition, using Weibull distribution, this work describes the conditions in which microcracks grow towards the fracture of bones in relation to the decrease in their mechanical properties. It has been demonstrated that peripheral infections accompanied by neuroinflammation may modify brain development or affect normal brain aging and represent major risk factors for the development of neurological disorders. A wide range of synthetic and natural compounds with anti-inflammatory properties have been evaluated in animal models of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration as an adjuvant therapeutic strategy. In the present study we have demonstrated for the first time that sodium thiosulphate (STS), a known antidote approved for treatment of certain medical conditions, is capable of reducing brain inflammation caused by systemic LPS administration. STS reduced brain levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba-1) and 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO) in an animal model of systemic LPS-induced neuroinflammation. In addition, we demonstrated for the first time elevated TSPO expression in retinal ganglion cells layer after peripheral LPS challenge and inhibition of ocular TSPO expression after treatment with STS. We think that STS may be used as an adjuvant anti-inflammatory therapy for many pathological conditions associated with inflammation in the brain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
