Yield quality and quantity in hydroponic greenhouses usually rely on optimum crop root health and effective nutrient mobility. This study evaluated the effects of applying arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and biochar on different growth characteristics of commercial rose cultivars in a hydroponic cultivation system. In this experiment, Rosa hybrida cultivars were 'Angelina' and 'Dolce Vita'. Treatments included concentrations of 0, 1.5, 3 and 6 g L-1 biochar, and 0 and 7 g L-1 of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi as organic biofertilizers for the growth of rose plants. Biofertilizer application at 3 g L-1 biochar and 7 g L-1 arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi optimally increased flowering shoot diameter, flower diameter, flowering shoot length, and leaf phosphorus content. The 'Dolce Vita' cultivar responded more favorably to higher concentrations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and biochar than the 'Angelina' cultivar in the hydroponic culture medium. Stem diameter, stem length, and flower diameter in both cultivars improved in response to higher biochar concentrations. The increased flowering shoot length resulted from root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and an enhanced nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus. Drought (water shortage) can substantially limit the yield and economic value of rose plants (Rosa spp.). Here, we characterized the effect of exogenous calcium (Ca2+) on the antioxidant system and photosynthesis-related properties of rose under polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000)- induced drought stress. Chlorophyll levels, as well as leaf and root biomass, were significantly reduced by drought; drought also had a major effect on the enzymatic antioxidant system and increased concentrations of reactive oxygen species. Application of exogenous Ca2+ increased the net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of leaves, enhanced water-use efficiency, and increased the length and width of stomata following exposure to drought. Organ-specific physiological responses were observed under different concentrations of Ca2+. Application of 5 mmol. L-1 Ca2+ promoted photosynthesis and antioxidant activity in the leaves, and application of 10 mmol. L-1 Ca2+ promoted antioxidant activity in the roots. Application of exogenous Ca2+ greatly enhanced the phenotype and photosynthetic capacity of potted rose plants following exposure to drought stress. Overall, our findings indicate that the application of exogenous Ca2+ enhances the drought resistance of roses by promoting physiological adaptation and that it could be used to aid the cultivation of rose plants. Twenty-six rose (Rosa × hybrida L.) cultivars grown for open field conditions were characterized using 16 vegetative and floral traits to obtain information on the nature and magnitude of existing genetic variability. The cultivars, Night Time, Christian Dior and Pusa Abhishek were early in flowering and Local Collection 3, Local Collection 4, Kashmir Velvet and Edouard had longer flowering duration; Christian Dior and Bonne Nuit had bigger flowers; Pusa Bahadur had long flower stalk; Local Collection 3, Local Collection 4, Edouard and Kashmir Velvet were having more number of flowers per plant and Pusa Bahadur, Night Time and Christian Dior were found with higher flower weight and shall help in further selection and hybridisation. The higher genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were recorded for plant height, plant spread (E-W), plant spread (N-S), stem girth, number of shoots/plant, number of petals/flower, flower stalk length, number of flowers/plant and 100-flower weight, indicating that genotypic variation contributed markedly towards total variability for the above traits. There is a greater scope for selection in improving flower yield. The high heritability with high expected genetic advance over mean (GAM) was observed for plant height, plant spread (E-W), plant spread (N-S), stem girth, number of shoots/plant, flower bud length, flower diameter and flower stalk length. This also revealed the lesser influence of environment on these traits. Therefore, simple selection based on phenotypic values for these traits could be useful in their improvement for achieving higher flower yield. Rose is the most economically important ornamental plant. However, cold stress seriously affects the survival and regrowth of garden roses in northern regions. Cold acclimation was studied using two genotypes (Rosa wichurana and R. hybrida ‘Yesterday’) selected from a rose breeding program. During the winter season (November to April), the cold hardiness of stems, soluble sugar content, and expression of dehydrins and the related key genes in the soluble sugar metabolism were analyzed. ‘Yesterday’ is more cold-hardy and acclimated faster, reaching its maximum cold hardiness in December. R. wichurana is relatively less cold-hardy, only reaching its maximum cold hardiness in January after prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures. Dehydrin transcripts accumulated significantly during November–January in both genotypes. Soluble sugars are highly involved in cold acclimation, with sucrose and oligosaccharides significantly correlated with cold hardiness. Sucrose occupied the highest proportion of total soluble sugars in both genotypes. During November– January, downregulation of RhSUS was found in both genotypes, while upregulation of RhSPS was observed in ‘Yesterday’ and upregulation of RhINV2 was found in R. wichurana. Oligosaccharides accumulated from November to February and decreased to a significantly low level in April. RhRS6 had a significant upregulation in December in R. wichurana. Soluble sugars and starches are important metabolites of plant life and physiological markers of plant stress response. There is an urgent need to develop a non-destructive and rapid method for determining plant starch and soluble sugar contents. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) technology has been used to determine the physiological state and cold resistance of select plant tissues. However, so far there have been no reports on the use of EIT for the rapid estimation of soluble sugar and starch contents. In this study, EIT was used to obtain reconstructed voltage values and estimate starch and soluble sugar contents in the stems of three Rosa hybrida cultivars during February to May, which were grown in the Specimen Park (38° 50′ N, 115° 26′ E) of Hebei Agricultural University, Baoding City, Hebei Province, China. Stems from two of the cultivars were used for establishing regression models for starch and soluble sugar contents as functions of reconstructed voltage values. The third cultivar was used to test the accuracy of the regression models. The quadratic regression model was best for determining soluble sugar content and the logarithmic regression model was best for determining starch content. Thus, this research provided technical support for using EIT to analyze changes in physiological parameters and to rapidly estimate physiological indexes of plants. This article describes a new method of participatory arts-based research in which poets and social scientists form a collaborative research collective. This collaborative poetics method harnesses participants' skills and knowledge to produce innovative, creative pieces, which can deepen understandings of social scientific issues and communicate this knowledge in engaging, accessible ways. The method was developed in a pilot study in which seven young spoken word poets and one poet/social scientist explored their lived experiences of discrimination. These experiences were elucidated through poetic autoethnographies, which were disseminated in a chapbook and live spoken word performance. Audience feedback indicated that the autoethnographies were powerful and thought provoking. For the co-researchers, the project was a transformative experience, facilitating changes in their focus, exploration, and communication of issues around discrimination and encouraging them to respond differently to instances of discrimination, prejudice, or abuse. The haploid ascomycete Diplocarpon rosae is the causal agent of black spot disease on roses, a widespread and devastating disease in the outdoor landscape. In this study, we established a Eurasian collection of 77 monoconidial strains of D. rosae: 50 strains collected on cultivated roses in Europe and Asia, and 27 strains on wild roses in Kazakhstan. To provide tools to describe its biology and to study its genetic diversity, we sequenced two strains of D. rosae using Illumina paired‐end technology. The genome sizes of these two strains were estimated at 31.1 and 35.2 Mb, which are two times smaller than the genome size of the unique strain previously published. A BUSCO analysis confirmed a genome duplication of the strain previously sequenced and partial gene duplication of strains analysed in this study. Using the two genome sequences, 27 polymorphic microsatellite markers were identified. Polymorphism analysis of the 77 strains revealed a strong genetic differentiation between strains from cultivated and wild roses, and a lower diversity within the fungal population from cultivated roses compared to the population from wild roses. Pathogenicity of 10 strains was evaluated on 9 rose cultivars inoculated in the greenhouse. Disease scoring allowed the classification of strains into three groups and the characterization of resistance of rose cultivars. Good correlation observed between resistance scoring in greenhouse conditions and in the field indicates that pathogenicity assays in controlled conditions could be very useful in the near future to rapidly characterize the resistance of new rose varieties to black spot disease. We investigated the light response of leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and optical properties in rose plants grown in a glasshouse with bending technique. Leaves were lighted from the adaxial or the abaxial side during measurements, performed in four positions in the upright and bent shoots: top leaves, middle leaves, bottom leaves, and bent shoot leaves. Moreover, the effect of the irradiation on the adaxial or abaxial leaf side on whole canopy photosynthesis was estimated through model simulation. No significant differences were found in light transmission, reflection and absorption of leaves and in photosynthesis light response curves among the four positions. In all the leaf positions, light absorption, stomatal conductance and photosynthesis were higher when leaves were lighted from the adaxial compared with the abaxial side. The model showed that a substantial part of the light absorbed by the crop originated from light reflected from the greenhouse floor, and thus the abaxial leaf properties have impact on whole crop light absorbance and photosynthesis. Simulations were performed for crops with leaf area index (LAI) 1, 2 and 3. Simulation at LAI 1 showed the highest reduction of simulated crop photosynthesis considering abaxial properties; however, to a lesser extent photosynthesis was also reduced at LAI 2 and 3. The overall results showed that the model may be helpful in designing crop systems for improved light utilisation by changing lamp position or level of leaf bending and pruning. Most plant species with upright growth receive light for photosynthesis on the upper side of their leaves and are better lit at the top of the canopy. Modern artificial lighting systems in horticultural greenhouses are placed between the plant rows and irradiate the lower leaf side and the bottom part of plant. The present research aimed to investigate the effect of ethylene on the physiological and molecular responses of the cut roses, Rosa hybrida L. Two cut rose cultivars ('Amada +' and 'Brillante') with different ethylene sensitivity were treated by 10 ppm exogenous ethylene for 24 h under identical vase life room conditions at partially open stage. The cultivars were then examined at both partially and fully open stage by gas chromatography, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and qRT-PCR. The cultivar with high sensitivity had lower total protein contents and showed higher ethylene production and antioxidant activity. Either exogenously applied ethylene or endogenously produced one resulted in increased antioxidant activity and decreased total protein contents. This observation is possibly because of enhanced free radical generation and protease activation with ethylene-induced flower opening and senescence. The qRT-PCR analysis showed a significant increase in the expression of ethylene signal transduction genes (RhETR1,3 and RhCTR1,2) of the treated cultivars with high sensitivity at commercial stage. However, there was a significant up-regulation of the RhETR1,3 genes in the cultivars with low sensitivity at fully-open stage. The primary factors that determine the longevity of cut roses are variable and depend on a cultivar's sensitivity to ethylene. The vase life of ethylene-sensitive cultivars (SENS) is shortened by ethylene synthesis, while for ethylene-insensitive cultivars (INSENS) it is strongly related to water stress. In this study, we determined the effect of ethylene binding on the change in ethylene sensitivity in two rose cultivars with different sensitivities to the hormone. In addition, we determined the effects of ethylene binding and synthesis inhibition on flower senescence and gene expression using 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG). The relationship between the mRNA levels of ethylene biosynthesis, receptor, and signaling genes and the degree of ethylene sensitivity was determined during flower development and senescence. The results showed that simultaneous treatment with AVG and 1-MCP effectively improved water balance, maintained leaf chlorophyll fluorescence ratios, and consequently extended the vase life of cut flowers for both SENS and INSENS cultivars. The results also revealed that the expression of the ethylene biosynthesis (RhACS2 and RhACO1) genes in cut roses was effectively suppressed by simultaneous treatments with both AVG and 1-MCP. The ethylene-induced induction of RhETR1-5 transcript levels and the degradation of RhCTR1-2 were both repressed by AVG and 1-MCP treatments; consequently, RhEIN3s transcripts were greatly inhibited in both SENS and INSENS cultivars. The findings from the current study revealed that a simultaneous inhibition of ethylene binding and synthesis suppressed plant responses to ethylene and consequently extended the vase life for cut rose flowers in both ethylene-sensitive and ethylene-insensitive cultivars. Key message: Rdr3 is a novel resistance gene of black spot in roses that maps to a chromosome 6 homolog. A new DNA test was developed and can be used to pyramid black spot resistance in roses. Diplocarpon rosae, the cause of rose black spot, is one of the most devastating foliar pathogens of cultivated roses (Rosa spp.). The primary method of disease control is fungicides, and they are viewed unfavorably by home gardeners due to potential environmental and health impacts. Planting rose cultivars with genetic resistance to black spot can reduce many of the fungicide applications needed in an integrated pest management system. To date, four resistance genes have been identified in roses (Rdr1, Rdr2, Rdr3, and Rdr4). Rdr3 was never mapped and is thought to be unique from Rdr1 and Rdr2. It is unknown whether it is an allele of Rdr4. To assess the novelty of Rdr3, a mapping population was created by crossing the Rdr3 containing cultivar George Vancouver with the susceptible cultivar Morden Blush. The mapping population was genotyped with the WagRhSNP 68 K Axiom array and mapped using the 'polymapR' package. Rdr3 was mapped to a chromosome 6 homolog confirming it is different from Rdr1 and Rdr2, found on chromosome 1, and from Rdr4, found on chromosome 5. The mapping information was used in conjunction with the Rosa chinensis genome assembly to develop new tightly linked SSRs for marker-assisted breeding. Three markers were able to predict the presence of Rdr3 in a 63-cultivar validation set. Additionally, 12 cultivars appear to have resistance genes other than Rdr3. Featured Applications: Featured Applications: In the energy sector, Cu0 nano-roses are potential electrocatalysts for fuel cells. In the agri-food sector, Cu0 nano-roses are new sensors of enzymatic polyphenols' oxidation to quinones. Carbon nanostructures are achieved by bio-waste Allium cepa, L., (onion vulgaris) peels through pyrolysis at 900 °C. They contain dispersed elements derived by their bio-precursors, like Mg, Ca, S, Na, K, and Cu. Here, we report the self-assembly of new Cu flower-shaped nanostructures organized as nano-roses. Remarkably, the nano-roses show rolled-up petals of Cu0 with a high chemical stability in air, exhibiting an intrinsic pure Cu crystalline phase. This suggests the exceptional potentiality to synthesize Cu0 nanostructures with novel physical/chemical properties. The size, morphology, and chemical composition were obtained by a combination of high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Rose is the dominant flower in the ornamental industry because of its multiple aesthetic values. Optimization of plant growth regulators in media was achieved for one of the important species of rose. The nodal explants were tested on a full strength MS media with different hormone concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and Kinetin (Kn). Maximum response was obtained for a combined hormone concentration of 6-benzylaminopurine (3.5mg/L) and kinetin (1.5mg/L) with shoot regeneration from nodes, internodes and apical meristematic tissue. 6-benzylaminopurine alone showed shoot regeneration only from internodes and nodes, while kinetin alone showed shoot regeneration only from apical meristematic tissue. Protoplast of Rosa sp. and Rosa sinensis were isolated enzymatically and fused using polyethylene. The protoplasts were observed to fuse on different planes in an irregular pattern. Due to its high commercial value, many studies on rose (Rosa hybrida L.) micropropagation have been published. However, there are a limited number of studies on rose in vitro flowering. These studies only focused on the roles of plant growth regulators in the formation and morphogenesis of flowers. In this protocol, cytokinin was confirmed to positively function in the induction of in vitro rose flowers. In fact, more than 40% of in vitro shoots were induced to flower when they were grown on a medium supplemented with benzylaminopurine (BA) (2 mg L−1) and IAA (0.1 mg L−1). In addition, this study showed that the growth medium supplemented with only coconut water (15 or 20% v/v) was very efficient to induce flowering of in vitro miniature rose plants (> 70%) after 60 d of subculture. In addition, the in vitro flowers were normal and almost similar to ex vitro flowers in terms of flower shape and color. WO3 materials are widely used in photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. In this work, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) was used to control the growth of H2WO4 during a chemical bath deposition fabrication process. The as-prepared H2WO4 material showed a rose-like morphology and after annealing the obtained WO3 sample was porous with oxygen defects. XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and some other methods were used to characterize the samples. A possible growth mechanism was given depending on the characterization results. The addition of SDBS resulted in simultaneous growth of numerous H2WO4 nuclei, which caused a uniform distribution. Compared with normal WO3, the as-fabricated porous rose-like WO3 showed higher stability to photocorrosion and a narrower band gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We diagnosed disease caused by psittacid herpesvirus 3 (PsHV-3), a novel psittacid pathogen, in rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) housed in an exotic psittacine breeding colony in southern Brazil. The disease affected several adult birds. Clinical signs included apathy, tachypnea, and wheezing. Four birds were autopsied, and sections of lungs and liver were examined histologically and by electron microscopy (EM), revealing pulmonary congestion, bronchopneumonia, or multifocal necrosis of tertiary bronchi, with syncytial cells and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies. Viral particles morphologically compatible with herpesviruses were observed by EM in lung sections. PCR with pan-herpesvirus primers performed on total DNA extracted from paraffinized tissue resulted in a 278-bp product. Sequencing of the amplicon revealed 93% nucleotide identity with a PsHV-3 sequence available in GenBank. Phylogenetic analysis grouped the obtained sequence with the only PsHV-3 DNA polymerase gene sequence available (GenBank accession JX028240) and separated the sequence from psittacid herpesviruses 1 and 2. The clinical, pathologic, and molecular findings support the association of PsHV-3 with pneumonia found in these rose-ringed parakeets in southern Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was conducted on two varieties of rose flowers, red variety Rosa and whit variety Krohen, aimed for extending the vase life of flowers under wet storage conditions for seven days at a temperature of 1 ± 6 (T1), 1 ± 10 (T2), 25°C (T3) and relative humidity 80-90%. The results of the present study showed that the red variety and temperature 6°C were significantly decreased the respiration rate, amount of water lost, increased the amount of water absorbed, water balance and vase life compared to the white variety and room temperature. The present work reports the discovery and the complete characterisation of an ancient cultivated rose variety found growing in a private garden in the southwest of the Principality of Asturias (northern Spain). The variety is here given the name Narcea. The majority of roses currently cultivated belong to the so-called group of 'Modern Roses', all of which were obtained after 1867 via artificial crosses and improvement programmes. All are destined for ornamental use. Until the 19th century, the great majority of the many ancient cultivated roses in Europe were used in perfumery and cosmetics, or had medicinal uses. Rosa damascena and Rosa centifollia are still grown and used by the French and Bulgarian perfume industries. The Asturian Massif of the Cantabrian Mountain Range provides a natural habitat for some 75% of the wild members of the genus Rosa, but until now there was no evidence that this area was home to ancient cultivated roses. A complete botanical description is here provided for a discovered ancient rose. It is also characterised according to a series of sequence tagged microsatellite sites, and its agronomic features are reported. In addition, a histological description (optical and scanning electronic microscope studies) of the petals is offered, along with an analysis of the volatile compounds present in these organs as determined by solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. This study investigated changes in volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) of rose plants (Rosa chinensis Jacq.) after treatment with tenuazonic acid (TeA). TeA is a toxin produced by Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler and is a key virulence factor for infection of the plants by the fungus. VOCs were collected in situ separately from intact live twigs of healthy and TeA-treated rose plants by dynamic headspace adsorption (DHSA) or from cut twigs of healthy and treated roses by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrum (GC–MS). VOC emissions changed significantly after the plants were treated with TeA based on the results obtained with both methods. GC–MS and chemometrical analysis show that the content of monoterpenes significantly increased the most, followed by ketones and alcohols, whereas sesquiterpenes decreased significantly, resulting from the induction by TeA. Twelve VOCs were emitted at significantly higher or lower levels from TeA-treated roses compared with healthy roses. After TeA treatment, the content of 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone increased by 80.1% (DHSA) and 67.8% (HS-SPME) while β-elemene decreased by 84.93% (DHSA) and 71.21% (HS-SPME). Butyl acetate, allo-ocimene, decanol and tetradecanol with their relatively large contents were detected only from TeA-treated roses as early as 2–4 days after treatment with TeA. This means that theses VOCs could be used as the markers for the detection of the fungus infection in rose plants before disease symptoms become visible. The obvious temporal effects of the changes in contents of these four VOCs were also recorded. Rice production in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam (MRD) is endangered by sea-level rise and an associated increase in the incidence of salinity intrusion. This paper examines the diffusion of salt tolerant rice varieties in the MRD that were promoted through Consortium for Unfavorable Rice Environments (CURE) activities. Factors associated with adoption of CURE-related varieties are estimated using a random utilty model and a dataset of 800 farm households with rice fields in salinity prone areas of the MRD. Results suggest that there has been widespread adoption of CURE-related varieties in salinity-prone areas. Further, multivariate analysis reveals that environment and location characteristics, rather than household characteristics, are the most important determinants of adoption. In particular, CURE-related varieties are more likely to be adopted in high-salinity-risk areas that are not protected by salinity barrier gates. Neighbhors' adoption decisions also strongly influence household decisions to adopt CURE-related varieties. The contracting of mechanization, particularly for land preparation and harvest, requires the coordination of village households in timing of planting, harvest and varietal duration. This coordination appears to extend to choice of CURE-related varieties. Finally, CURE-related varieties and other varieties generate similar net revenues in a year with low salinity exposure, suggesting that CURE-related varieties are a low-cost insurance policy against salinity inundation in high risk areas. Combined, these results highlight the need to address complex factors beyond current economic profits, like environment, community choices, and risk mitigation, when designing technologies and policies that support farmer adaptation to climatic change. Blossom blight caused by Botrytis cinerea is one among the most devastating diseases that cause complete post-harvest loss in flower crops. The present study focuses on the development of effective bioformulation towards suppression of blossom blight and plant growth promotion in rose. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (VB2) and Bacillus subtilis (AP) effectively inhibited mycelial growth of B. cinerea in vitro. Genome screening of VB2 and AP revealed the presence of antimicrobial peptide genes including, ituD, ipa14, bacA, bacD, srfA, sfP, spaC, spaS responsible for the biosynthesis of antibiotics such as iturin, bacilysin, bacillomycin, surfactin and subtilin. Further, the presence of volatile antifungal compounds in the bacterial secretome was identified through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. Upon treatment, AP accelerated the metabolite profile of the plants and a rise in peak area of antifungal compounds such as, pentadecanoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid (stearic acid) and tetradecanoic acid was observed. In vitro, VB2 produced maximum indole acetic acid (9.17 µg/ml) and gibberellic acid (8.20 µg/ml) in nutrient broth. Under field conditions, foliar spray of VB2 at 0.5% (5 ml/l), four times at weekly interval suppressed blossom blight incidence (64% reduction over control) and also promoted yield. Future research towards development of an effective bioformulation with extended shelf life will aid in the management of various fungal, bacterial and viral diseases in different crop plants. The effect of salicylic acid (SA) and nitric oxide (NO) was explored on some growth characteristics and leaf and root nutrients content in Rosa hybrida "Beverly Watson" under alkaline stress conditions in a factorial experiment with three replications. Two factors were foliar applied including salicylic acid (SA) at five rates (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 mM) and sodium nitroprusside at four rates (0, 0.5, 1 and 2 mM). In order to create alkalinity, sodium bicarbonate solution was applied to pot soil in several stages to reach pH = 8. The recorded parameters were included the fresh and dry weight of leaf, stem and root, and leaf and root minerals content. The results showed that SA and NO application alleviated the adverse effects of alkalinity on the plant and increased growth parameters. Also, they significantly increased some essential elements such as K, Ca, Zn, Fe, Mn, and Cu in leaf and root as compared to control and decreased Na content in leaf and root. In general, it was revealed that SA and NO treatments were effective in mitigating the negative effects of alkalinity in roses and can have positive and favorable effects on the growth and development of this plant. The aim of the present paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of heraldry, in particular of para-heraldic devices known as "badges", in 15th-century England. The case chosen for examination is that of the white rose, one of the major badges of Edward IV. The data consists of four contemporary texts in which Edward is referred to as the "rose", analysed against the background of the use of the white rose of York as a heraldic device. This includes surviving artefacts ranging from effigies to stained glass to seals and manuscript illuminations, as well as contemporary descriptions and depictions of those artefacts. Using the methodological apparatus of cognitive linguistics, specifically the multimodal metaphor and metonymy analysis, the author examines the interplay between language and heraldry. The results show that while the primary function of the white rose and of other badges employed by Edward IV was to emphasize his heritage and thus invite a metonymic reading, the badge inspired other, metaphorical readings, which were employed rhetorically by his supporters. In this context, the concept of the badge may be reinterpreted as a metaphtonymy. The analysis supports the view of heraldry as an integral element of medieval society. From a semiotic perspective, heraldry should be seen as a dynamic system that could be exploited creatively to suit the needs of its users, which in turn corresponds to the dynamic theory of metaphor. Summary: The largest survey on the perception of synthetic biology‐related disciplines (Porcar et al., 2019,EMBO Rep 20) recently revealed that the Spanish society does not have a very positive perception of the term synthetic biology. On the other hand, the terms biotechnology and even genetic engineering received relatively higher scores. The issue of nomenclature and perception is a classical one in science perception studies. Synthetic biologists have been debating their neologism (Synthetic Biology, from now on SB) for years. Even in a 2006 blog, Rob Carlson discussed the various labels for the new field, such as intentional biology, constructive biology, natural engineering, synthetic genomics and biological engineering. This diversity of names, along with the above mentioned negative public perception of the term synthetic biology, raises the question on whether the term itself is suitable or whether it could, in an extreme scenario, be replaced by another combining scientific consensus with public acceptance. The present study was carried out to investigate biochemical, morphological, and physiological processes involved in the adaptive processes of cut roses grown in arching and high-rack culture systems under water deficit condition. Rose plants 'Club-Nika' were subjected to three water regimes [control (100% of irrigation needs), moderate water stress (75%), and severe water stress (50%)] factorially combined with two training systems defined as arching and high-rack systems. Water deficit significantly reduced morphological and qualitative traits as well as water relations of cut roses. Water deficit significantly reduced Net CO2 assimilation rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (gs), whereas it did not affect Water Use Efficiency (WUEi) and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci). Surprisingly, water deficit did not affect chlorophyll content [chl a, chl b and total chl (a + b)] and proline accumulation of leaves. Considering the lack of change in intercellular CO2 concentration, it seems likely that both stomatal closure and metabolic impairment limit photosynthetic CO2 assimilation under water deficit. Regardless of irrigation regimes, rose plants trained with high-rack culture system showed a superiority for most of the qualitative and quantitative attributes compared to those trained with arching system. The high-rack system resulted in 60% higher extraquality stems (> 60 cm) compared with the plants trained with arching. It can be concluded that cut roses respond to water deficit through adaptive changes in physiological and morphological levels to reduce water loss without any negative impact at biochemical level. Cultivation systems used for rose production often impose salt stress in arid and semiarid regions of the world. While boron (B) has been widely reported as a nutrient that can alleviate the adverse effects of salt stress on crop growth and yield, inadequate information is available regarding the emerging pattern of rose plant responses to an appropriate concentration of boron under salinity condition is available. To address this issue, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of B application (24, 34, 44, and 54 μM) on Rosa plants under two levels of salt stress (1.8 and 2.9 dS m−1). Cut rose (Rosa hybrida L.) "Dolce Vita" was grown hydroponically in containers with a mixture of cocopeat and perlite and nitrified by an automated drip-irrigation system. All levels of B application alleviated the salt stress-induced adverse effects on rose plants by improving leaf area, relative water, and soluble carbohydrate contents in leaves and maintained the osmotic potential which is essential for plant performance under salt stress. Boron also increased membrane permeability by decreasing the electrolyte leakage. Maximum salt resistance was obtained at about ≈40–60 µM boron concentration in the nutrient solution. These findings suggest that proper management of ions concentration in the nutrient solution including an appropriate concentration of boron application would help rose plants to cope with the challenge of salt stress. A novel virus was discovered in a Rosa wichuraiana Crep. by high-throughput sequencing and tentatively named "rose virus A" (RVA). Based on sequence identity and phylogenetic analysis, RVA represents a new member of the genus Carlavirus (family Betaflexiviridae). The genome of RVA is 8,849 nucleotides long excluding the poly(A) tail and contains six open reading frames (ORFs). The predicted ORFs code for a replicase, triple gene block (TGB), coat protein, and nucleic acid binding protein, as in a typical carlavirus. RVA is the first carlavirus identified in rose and has the highest nucleotide sequence similarity to poplar mosaic virus. Background: Digestive diseases constitute a significant part in the overall structure of human diseases. Herbal cholagogues are indicated for a treatment of chronic liver, gall bladder, and bile ducts diseases. The aim of the work is to determine the choleretic effect of a new multicomponent plant extract. Materials and Methods: Multicomponent plant extract was obtained from the following types of plant materials: 300 g of immortelle flowers (Helichrysum arenarium L.), 100 g of tansy flowers (Tanacetum vulgare L.), 100 g of rose fruits (Rosa sp.), 100 g of leaves of common nettle (Urtica dioica L.), 50 g of mint leaves (Mentha piperita L.), 50 g of licorice roots (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.). The extract was standardized by the total flavonoid content. It was calculated and expressed in terms of luteolin and isosalipurposide standards (total flavonoids content: not less than 4% and 15% respectively). The animal experiments being done in 80 nonlinear male rats with initial body weight 180-200 g. In order to study a choleretic effect of multicomponent herbal extract, naive rats recieved the single experimental dose of 250 mg/kg. Pharmacotherapeutic activity was studied in white rats with CCl4-induced hepatitis. Results: Studies indicate a pronounced choleretic effect of the studied plant extract, that is comparable with the effect of "Allochol" in intact rats experiments. The course administration of a per os (peroral) multicomponent plant extract in a dose of 250 mg/kg to white non-linear rats with tetrachloromethane liver damage has a choleretic effect: it increases the rate of bile secretion, stimulates the synthesis and secretion of cholates with bile, and also the excretion of cholesterol and bilirubin. Conclusion: The obtained research results argue the feasibility of using a multicomponent plant extract containing biologically active substances of phenolic nature in the prevention and comprehensive treatment of liver diseases. It is widely recognized that hydrothermal time has an important influence on the structure, optical properties and photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts. However, there are few reports concerning the effects of hydrothermal time on ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst. In this work, a series of ZnIn2S4 photocatalysts were prepared at different hydrothermal time (0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h). The effects of hydrothermal time on the crystallinity, absorbing property, specific surface area, total pore volume, grain size, morphology and photocatalytic activity of ZnIn2S4 were studied. We studied the petal number trait in a population obtained after self-pollination of R. x damascena f. trigintipetala following analysis of molecular markers which have previously been mapped near the major dominant locus Blfo/d6 determining this trait in other rose species including R. multiflora and R. hybrida. The results showed that the same genetic mechanism, which determines the petal number trait in R. multiflora and R. hybrida also controls the trait in R. x damascena f. trigintipetala and is related to the dominant effect of a single copy allele in the tetraploid genome of this species. We also analyzed the expression of several flower homeotic genes including R. x damascena APETALA1/FUL-like (paleo AP1 type), R. x damascena euAPETALA 3 (euAP3 line) and R. x damascena AGAMOUS in early stage flower buds corresponding to plants with double and simple flowers. The obtained results showed that only R. x damascena AGAMOUS was differentially expressed between the samples of double and simple flowers, its relative expression being upregulated 3.5-fold in simple flowers. We further cloned and sequenced the four genomic clones of R. x damascena AGAMOUS and studied the potential additive effect of this gene by analysing the segregation of its four alleles in the population of self-pollinated R. x damascena. Analysis of variance of the data for petal number and allele segregation did not show a statistically significant effect of any allele configuration of the AGAMOUS gene on the petal number trait in R. x damascena f. trigintipetala. The rose tortrix moth [Archips rosana (Linnaeus)] is a dominant species among leafroller moths in Poland's apple orchards. The study found high levels of parasitisation of the tortrix (15.5-40.1%), with the average level of parasitisation of 24.6%, by parasitoids of the families Ichneumonidae, Chalcididae and Tachinidae. The most effective were the Ichneumonidae, which decreased the tortrix abundance by 17.2%. The rose tortrix moth was parasitised by 7 Ichneumonidae species, namely: Trichomma enecator (Rossi), Phaeogenes semivulpinu (Gravenhorsts), Exochus mitratus (Gravenhorsts), Apechthis quadridentata (Thomson), Apechthis rufata (Gmelin in Linnaeus), Itoplectis maculator (Fabricius) and Pimpla turionellae (Linnaeus). Rose cryptic virus-1 (RoCV1) also known as Rosa multiflora cryptic virus is a partitivirus affecting roses, one of the most important ornamental crops worldwide. RoCV1 has previously been reported in the US, Canada and New Zealand, and has now been identified in the United Kingdom for the first time. Using High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) RoCV1 sequences were found in two samples collected in 2007 and 2012. This discovery led to the development of a RT-qPCR (TaqMan) assay for the detection of this virus. As part of a rose virus survey in the UK, 251 samples were analysed using the newly developed RoCV1 RT-qPCR test, following ELISA analysis for other common rose viruses. The results of the RT-qPCR test were confirmed using published conventional PCR primers and Sanger sequencing of amplified products. Results suggest that RoCV1 could have been infecting roses in the UK since at least 2007, with a large number of recently collected samples (43%) found to be infected. A Rose bengal-functionalized porous organic polymer (RB-POP) was prepared with a specific surface area of up to 562 m2 g−1. In the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene, RB-POP supported Ag(0) nanoparticles exhibited excellent performance for catalyzing cyclization of propargyl alcohols with CO2 at 30 °C, achieving a TOF of 5000 h−1, the highest value among the reported ones.
