The need for proficiency in academic writing has never been more important due to its significance for academic success and professional growth. The skills required in academic writing range from research to critical thinking and communication skills. It develops holistic intellectual development and will help one run a successful professional life, more so in highly researchoriented areas where publications become highly valued. This paper has attempted to fill up the research gaps created by the lack of research into corpus linguistic and corpus-based studies in general within the parameters of Philippine academic writing, with its insufficiency of known studies on metadiscourse markers in particular. This paper examined the use of metadiscourse markers in a researcher-constructed 120,000-word corpus of academic papers written by Grade 11 Senior High School students, namely, concept papers, position papers, reaction papers, and scientific reports. Specifically, the research determined the metadiscourse markers used by students and their frequency across text types, as well as qualitative analysis of their contextual usage. In the current study, it is revealed that students utilize a wide array of interactive and interactional markers, drawing on Hyland's taxonomy of metadiscourse markers (2005) and AntConc V. 3.5.8, a corpus analysis software. The study revealed a predominant use of interactive over interactional metadiscourse markers, with a notable emphasis on transitions within the interactive category. Qualitative analysis also showed that transitions and engagement markers serve various functions, such as clarifying relationships within the text, structuring arguments, and providing additional information for better understanding. Interactional resources were also employed to convey the writer's stance, engage the reader, and present a balanced view by acknowledging different perspectives. Hence, the findings highlighted that text type, rhetorical purpose, and the use of metadiscourse markers interact closely in shaping how the writer communicates and accomplishes their purpose effectively. Future research should address writing ability and experience as factors influencing the choice of metadiscourse markers and examine their variation of use across academic and nonacademic settings. This paper synthesizes research on student and teacher emotions in the classroom through the lens of the Ecological Dynamic Systems model. It places emotions in immediate contexts in the classroom including emotionally expressive environment, learning/instruction, and relationships. The paper identifies specific antecedents of emotions within each context. It further discusses how the intersection of classroom events and teachers' and students' goals, beliefs, and relational experiences give rise to emotions. Emotions in the classroom further reflect the complex transactions between classroom and socio-historical contexts. The paper discusses how emotions are influenced by broad socio-cultural factors including educational policies and reforms, school demographics, and culture at large. Finally, it focuses on the role of appraisal for the emotions in the classroom and how appraisals are contextualized by students' and teachers' beliefs and personal experiences. Understanding the interplay of various contexts for emotions in the classroom will inform teacher preparation, designing instructional and behavioral interventions as well as educational policies and reforms. Using the epidemiologic triangle framework (i.e., agent, host, environment), this early-semester activity was designed to help students both understand the multifaceted nature of COVID-19 and relax their tendency to compartmentalize knowledge. Specifically, the activity asked students to categorize the titles of 24 COVID-related research papers into the three categories (agent, host, environment) and 12 arbitrary subcategories. Instead of giving lectures and making students read research papers, we engaged them in reviewing and categorizing the titles to better understand the epidemiologic triangle. Students' content knowledge about COVID-related jargon was significantly improved and their attitude toward reading research papers was improved in some cases. Highly cited papers showcase high-quality research and encompass significant themes in the field. This study examined a total of 435 highly cited papers based on Essential Citation Indicators in the Web of Science (WoS) category of sport sciences with a bibliometric method. In particular, the bibliometric indicators of the highly cited papers including publication venues, authors, countries, institutions, and the top cited publications were presented and analyzed in detail. An Abstract corpus was constructed to help identify the most frequently explored topics. VOSviewer was employed to visualize the co-occurrence networks of keywords. The study revealed the trending information of important contributors at the levels of journals, authors, countries, and institutes. The top cited publications can be grouped into three categories: guidelines, recommendations based on systematic reviews, and evaluations. The most frequently explored topics based on the Abstract corpus and the most frequently used keywords from VOSviewer mapping overlap to a great extent. Specifically, topics such as meta-analysis, systematic review, sport-related concussion, sedentary behavior, football, rehabilitation, and osteoarthritis are among the most frequently mentioned. The results provide the most updated publication characteristics and hot topics of highly cited papers in sport sciences and offer insights for academic researchers in future research. Objective: The objective of the study is to identify and comprehend the challenges experienced by the undergraduate medical and dental students in enrolled in public sector in Pakistan while conducting research. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out from April to June of 2023 among undergraduate students at public sector medical and dental schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A customized questionnaire was developed to gather information on the challenges faced by students when undertaking research. The survey was circulated online using Google Forms, and participation was entirely optional. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the responses. Results: Participants in the study were 58 male and 139 female students who were enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programs. The analysis found that 47% of students cited a lack of knowledge and research skills as a major barrier, while 40% cited time restrictions as a major issue. Mentorship and training issues were cited as major barriers by 51% of students, while a lack of institutional support was cited as a significant issue by 53% of students. Language issues made it difficult to produce research papers for 14% of students, while finding research opportunities was challenging for 38% of students. Conclusion: According to the research, undergraduate medical and dentistry students in the public sector encountered a number of challenges when conducting research. It was suggested that these issues be resolved by include research projects in the curriculum, providing specific interventions for enhancing research skills, establishing mentorship programs, and allocating funds for research activities. The problem of mental health in academia is increasingly discussed in literature, and to extract meaningful insights from the growing amount of scientific publications, text mining approaches are used. In this study, BERTopic, an advanced method of topic modeling, was applied to abstracts of 2,846 PubMed articles on depression, anxiety, and burnout in academia published in years 1975-2023. BERTopic is a modular technique comprising a text embedding method, a dimensionality reduction procedure, a clustering algorithm, and a weighing scheme for topic representation. A model was selected based on the proportion of outliers, the topic interpretability considerations, topic coherence and topic diversity metrics, and the inevitable subjectivity of the criteria was discussed. The selected model with 27 topics was explored and visualized. The topics evolved differently with time: research papers on students' pandemic-related anxiety and medical residents' burnout peaked in recent years, while publications on psychometric research or internet-related problems are yet to be presented more amply. This research paper investigates the students' attitudes toward learning English grammar and the possible factors that may affect the learning process. The significance of the study is revealing the attitudes of the English department students of Raparin University towards English Grammar. For this, some questions were raised to identify the students' perspectives, methods, and techniques used by the instructors. The research was carried out at the English language department in the College of Basic Education at the University of Raparin. The study involved 40 second and thirdyear EFL learners who participated in an online questionnaire that included 20 items and the mixed method used to gather the data. The results present that while students recognize the importance of grammar in language learning, they find it challenging to learn. Also, the researcher discovered that the technique instructors use to teach grammar is unsuitable, and students find grammar complex because of its numerous rules. Finally, the study illustrates the significance of encouraging and nurturing positive attitudes among learners toward learning the language's grammar to enhance teaching effectiveness. This paper explores the connections between archival research and teaching as an adjunct faculty member and mother. The form of the essay is an example of the "I-Search paper," a first-person account of the research process. In I-Search papers, authors start with the "search story," where they explain their initial research questions, then describe their "search results" in detail, including the primary sources they found, and end with a reflection on the research process. This essay is two I-Search papers in one—bringing together the experience of reading about students' historical research experiences with the author's own version of a research story. The essay is about teaching and research and their intersections, and especially what teaching has taught the author about research. The account of the individual research experience touches on the archival experiences of frustration and boredom, and the tension between wanting to find something in the archives and coming away with something else, and ends with a reflection on how our personal circumstances can impact our research. Embedded librarianship is an inevitable outcome of the information era. Since the concept of embedded librarianship emerged in 2004, a flurry of papers have been published. In China, many related research papers have also been published, but few of them focus on the practice of embedded librarianship in libraries of Chinese universities. This article investigates the current progress and practice of embedded librarianship in China. A total of 84 Chinese university libraries were surveyed. This article demonstrates that a few university libraries have achieved promising embedded practices, but most remain in the initial stages. Most librarians do not clearly understand the concept of embedded librarianship. To date, the embedded model is still in the transforming stage, and incentive mechanisms and evaluation systems have not been perfected. This study compared syntactic complexity between undergraduate students' research papers and published research papers. A 2 (Groups: experts, students) × 4 (Sections: introduction, methods, results, discussions) mixed factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted on each of the following variables: T-unit length, clause density, the frequencies of adverbial clauses, relative clauses, and nominal clauses. The analyses showed there were longer T-units and fewer adverbial clauses in the published papers than in the student papers. Section effects were robust. Qualitative analyses were further conducted to reveal how the student research paper is different from the published papers syntactically. Implications for education were discussed. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate student subgroups' responses to the coercive digitalisation of teaching and learning processes during the pandemic. Respective variance is discussed in terms of digital inequality and is interpreted as a need to individualise teaching and learning and quality assurance practices. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses data from surveys (N = 955) on student perceptions of the introduction of emergency digitalisation – an important aspect of higher education. The authors perform latent class analyses to identify student subgroups. The students were asked to rate digital learning processes and their overall learning experiences. Findings: The identified student subgroups are proponents, pragmatics and sceptics of digitalised teaching and learning processes. These subgroups have different preferences with regard to teaching and learning modes of delivery, which implies the relevance of individualised educational services and respective quality assurance practices to reflections on improvement needs. Research limitations/implications: The data are from a single, typical German university; therefore, the scope of the results may be limited. However, this study enriches future research on the traits of student subgroups and students' coping strategies in an ever-changing learning environment. Practical implications: The findings may help individualise universities' counselling services to enhance overall teaching performance and quality assurance practices in a digitalised environment. A documentary review was carried out on the production and publication of research papers related to the study of Machine Learning Techniques and the Stock Market. The purpose of the bibliometric analysis proposed in this document is to know the main characteristics of the volume of publications registered in the Scopus database during the period 2016-2021, identifying a total of 576 publications. The information provided by the said platform was organized through tables and figures, categorizing the information by Year of Publication, Country of Origin, Area of Knowledge and Type of Publication. Once these characteristics were described, the position of different authors regarding the proposed topic was referenced by employing a qualitative analysis. Among the main findings of this research, it is found that India, with 209 publications, was the country with the highest scientific production registered in the name of authors affiliated with institutions of that country. The Knowledge Area that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material referring to the study of Machine Learning Techniques for Stock Market prediction was Computer Science with 459 published documents, and the type of publication that was most used during the aforementioned period was the Conference Article, representing 50% of the total scientific production. The objective of this research paper is to determine the degree of relationship between the emergent technologies and the industry 4.0, and the Social and Solidarity-based Economic model. The research paper is a product of a quantitative analysis in 62 Guanajuato state's (Mexico) SMEs. The results show that there is a correlation between economy 4.0 and social economy. Syntactic complexity has been extensively approached in the fields of corpus linguistics and academic discourse studies. However, works focusing on disciplinary variation in terms of linguistic complexity and comparison of professional and novice academic writing are scarce. Addressing these issues is likely to have important implications for EAP/ESP practitioners in terms of selection of target structures and learning material design. This study is a corpus analysis of the use of clausal complexity features in two social sciences, management and economics. The research is based on two kinds of corpora: expert corpora which comprise articles published in peer-reviewed journals, and learner corpora of L2 undergraduate students' research papers. This work aims at answering two questions: Do clausal complexity features vary in the texts in management and economics? What are the differences in syntactic use between the academic texts written by professional authors and learner writing? The data showed that economists and managers tend to use the structures under consideration with significantly different frequencies. The area of knowledge that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material referring to the study of the digitization of academic contents by higher education institutions during the Covid-19 pandemic was Social Sciences with 74 published documents, and the type of publication that was most used during the period indicated above was the journal article, representing 55% of the total scientific production. One of the global megatrends is the expansion of digital financial solutions, and seemingly this expansion will continue as there is still room for adopting technology-driven solutions in finance. Regarding global data, the majority of people already have access to financial services: nearly 69 percent of responding adults confirmed that they have accounts at financial institutions. With the far-reaching development of technology, digital payments came into the public as one of the digital financial solutions. In particular, this development sped up during the COVID-19 epidemic, during which people were using remote services in order to keep their physical distance and avoid contamination. Though legal and cybersecurity concerns emerge, the physical infrastructure is developed enough to provide accessible financial services for many more people than today. Countries in various regions adopt modern financial solutions differently, but digital financial solutions are inevitable. In this research paper, the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the recent trends of digital payment is examined and presented. The paper aims to detect how new payment solutions change the landscape. The methodology of this study is a case study and data analysis. The successful example of China as a digital payment adopting country is analysed as a case study since the country experienced a large expansion in digital finance. This research paper investigates students' perceptions of whether English or the indigenous language (Arabic) should be used as a medium of instruction in English learning centers at the preintermediate level. This argument which is of both sides (Arabic or English should be used as a medium of instruction) has been investigated through students' responses. While there has been a great deal of research into students' perception of EMI in education, this study offers deeper explanations, from a psychological perspective, of why students prefer EMI despite the difficulty, which would negatively affect their attitudes toward English. In this study, the researcher employed a questionnaire survey to elicit some data from the participants studying in the EFL centers to present substantial evidence, represented by this study's findings, consulted, and supported by psychology-based explanations. Among the main findings is that although the participants of this study hold positive attitudes toward their native language (Arabic), they prefer to use English to Arabic as a medium of instruction. While novice writers are often expected to lucidly demonstrate the order in which different components of their reports are arranged, it is not clear as to whether such outlines are sufficiently prevalent in some social sciences. Neither are we certain about the range of structure- related language resources that can be introduced to novice writers. Based on an in-depth textual analysis and specialist informants' inputs, this study ascertained the prevalence of structural outlines, reasons for using or avoiding them, and the linguistic resources needed to present them in high impact journals in two social science disciplines, namely ethnic studies (ES) and industrial relations (IR). It was found that the majority of the ES researchers avoid structural outlines, but most of the IR researchers incorporate them for reasons associated with the research methodologies chosen. While ES researchers prefer to use locative adverbials and different tenses, IR researchers tend to employ passive structures in structural outlines. Expert writers in both disciplines, however, rely on the use of nominalisations denoting discourse categories and personal pronouns in combination with communication, accomplishment and activity verbs. Lecturers and students use research papers as references for their projects, such as research, final projects or theses. Obtaining suitable papers is critical for the success of their projects. Nonetheless, finding the correct papers, especially in determining the correct words to paper searching, is challenging. This paper proposes a method that combines FastText and Word Mover's Distance for a recommender system to solve the challenge. FastText and Word Mover's Distance are utilized to gather word embedding and reach semantic similarity, respectively. Data on papers from the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, ACM Digital Library, Science Direct, SpringerLink, and Wiley Digital Library are collected as case studies in this paper. Experiments for verifying the proposed method referring to seven scenarios in which additional three types of queries. The first query applies the original word from the case studies, whereas the second query operates the original word with one word or two words chosen by a user. The third query uses the original word-combining with chosen words based on the proposed method. After implementing these scenarios, most of the results indicate that results produced by the proposed method gain higher accuracy and F-1 score than user query and original query. This research paper is written to provide a hypothetical study on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model by Venkatesh et al. (2003); framework on Microsoft OneDrive usage acceptance in one of the established professional college in Malaysia. Questionnaires were distributed to 130 staff and lecturers at one of the branches with 107 returned, an 82.3% return rate. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 has been used to analyse the data collected. Five variables involved in this study which are Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Norm, Facilitating Conditions and Usage Acceptance. The study recommends future studies should include a bigger scale of the sample that consists of all the professional college branches and add more variables such as trust and security.
