Data from the MEDITS bottom trawl surveys in the Eastern Ionian Sea, covering a depth range of 28 to 845 m were analysed for the period 1998–2008. For each trawling location, environmental and geographical parameters were recorded, while biomass, abundance, biodiversity and size-based metrics were estimated for the total megafaunal community, as well as for four taxonomic sub-communities (Osteichthyes, Chondrichthyes, Crustacea and Cephalopoda) which were expected to respond differently to environmental changes and fishing. In addition, biomass and abundance of ten species selected based on commercial interest, depth range and life history traits were explored, with particular emphasis on deep-sea species. Fishing effort data collected during the study period were analysed and showed a decreasing trend, mainly due to a decrease in the activity of static nets. The relation between the estimated parameters and environmental and spatial factors, as well as temporal (interannual) effects and the effect of fishing effort were explored using generalized additive models (GAMs). Results of GAMs showed that depth and location explained much of the variation in community metrics, probably reflecting mesoscale spatial features and species/communities requirements. Even though the different communities and species exhibited variant patterns in bathymetric and spatial distribution, some common aggregation patterns in productive areas were identified. Despite the relatively short time series, GAMs were effective in detecting increasing trends for several metrics; taking into account spatial factors further contributed to attributing the remaining deviance to temporal effects. These trends were partly explained by the observed decline of fishing effort, which is further supported by the fact that negative relations between several metrics and fishing effort were identified, for some of the selected communities and populations. Abundance, species richness and maximum length proved the most informative metrics concerning the effect of fishing. The current decline in fishing effort in the area seems to be a move in the right direction and should be complemented by additional measures aiming to prevent allocation of effort towards the deep sea. Large-scale studies focused on the diversity of continental slope ecosystems are still rare, usually restricted to a limited number of diversity indices and mainly based on the empirical comparison of heterogeneous local data sets. In contrast, we investigate large-scale fish diversity on the basis of multiple diversity indices and using 1454 standardized trawl hauls collected throughout the upper and middle slope of the whole northern Mediterranean Sea (36°3′- 45°7′ N; 5°3′W - 28°E). We have analyzed (1) the empirical relationships between a set of 11 diversity indices in order to assess their degree of complementarity/redundancy and (2) the consistency of spatial patterns exhibited by each of the complementary groups of indices. Regarding species richness, our results contrasted both the traditional view based on the hump-shaped theory for bathymetric pattern and the commonly-admitted hypothesis of a large-scale decreasing trend correlated with a similar gradient of primary production in the Mediterranean Sea. More generally, we found that the components of slope fish diversity we analyzed did not always show a consistent pattern of distribution according either to depth or to spatial areas, suggesting that they are not driven by the same factors. These results, which stress the need to extend the number of indices traditionally considered in diversity monitoring networks, could provide a basis for rethinking not only the methodological approach used in monitoring systems, but also the definition of priority zones for protection. Finally, our results call into question the feasibility of properly investigating large-scale diversity patterns using a widespread approach in ecology, which is based on the compilation of pre-existing heterogeneous and disparate data sets, in particular when focusing on indices that are very sensitive to sampling design standardization, such as species richness. Scientific interest in deep-water marine resources has increased dramatically over the last 10–20 years as management bodies have sought advice on how to manage deep-water fisheries and protect deep-water ecosystems. The strengths and weaknesses of the management and monitoring of deep-water stocks, fisheries, and ecosystems in various areas of the world are described, with the objective of informing the EU FP7 DEEPFISHMAN project so that it can fulfill its primary aim, which is to develop strategic options for a short- and long-term management and monitoring ecosystem-based framework for the northeast Atlantic. To provide a baseline, the current monitoring and management regime in the northeast Atlantic is reviewed, followed by a brief description of the regimes applying to deep-water fisheries in the northwest Atlantic, the southeast Atlantic, off Brazil, in the Antarctic, off Australia and New Zealand, and in the Mediterranean. The strengths and weaknesses of these are discussed, taking into account additional information available from DEEPFISHMAN case study stocks, outcomes from consultations with stakeholders in the deep-water fishing industry in the northeast Atlantic, and the requirements of EU regulations and developing policy that will likely impact deep-water fisheries in the northeast Atlantic. Recent theoretical and field studies conducted in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems have suggested that diversity could be a more complex and multi-component concept than previously thought. However, it is still poorly understood to what extent the information provided by the various indices is complementary with regard to diversity, and to what extent this complementarity is reproducible in different situations or at different scales of observation. In the present work, we have analysed the reproducibility of the empirical relationships between 11 diversity indices related to four major aspects (components) of species diversity (species richness, rarity, evenness and species taxonomy) in order to determine whether there is a general pattern of redundancy or complementarity in diversity measures that holds across years, areas and spatial scales. We have applied this approach to groundfish diversity through the analysis of 2404 trawl hauls collected during the first large-scale annual surveys carried out using a single sampling design throughout the northern Mediterranean Sea (ranging from 36.3 to 45.7°N, and 5.3°W to 28°E). Whatever the years, areas and scales studied, we found a strong reproducibility in the number and the nature of the main complementary components of diversity. The whole set of diversity indices considered may be roughly split into 6 complementary groups of descriptors. This result highlights that, in contrast to what is still the usual practice, monitoring diversity should not be based on only one or two of the most widely used components, even at large scale. Finally, in a context where developing tools for monitoring diversity is considered as a high priority worldwide, the strong reproducibility of the relationships between diversity indices we observed offers a basis for discussion of the feasibility and relevance of proposing a general shortlist of indices for monitoring diversity at different management scales. 1. The development of ecosystem approaches to environmental management implies the need to account for multiple pressures on ecosystems. Trends in multiple metrics that respond differently to changes in major environmental pressures need to be combined to evaluate the impacts of fishing and environmental changes on fish communities. 2. An exploited fish community is viewed as a three-level food chain in which the two upper levels, or functional groups, are targeted by fishing fleets, while the lowest level is subject to environmental variation. Qualitative modelling is used to predict changes at the two upper levels, that is, top-down vs. bottom-up perturbations. Abundance and length metrics are calculated from survey data for 14 Mediterranean and East-Atlantic groundfish shelf communities at both population and functional group levels. The joint likelihood of time trends in metrics is used to evaluate the evidence for different causes of changes. 3. A wide diversity of impacts is found to have equal evidence at the population level within each community. Consistency between the impacts identified and changes in pressures known from independent information is found at the functional group and community level. The results suggest that there is some compensation between species within functional groups. 4. Synthesis and applications. The method can be used to conduct an integrated assessment of community dynamics subject to multiple pressures. Joint trends in metrics provide evidence of which known pressures are having an impact on the community, and thus, which management actions should be taken to mitigate these changes. Simulation of fisheries systems is a widely used approach that integrates monitoring and assessment tools. We applied the ALADYM (age-length based dynamic model) simulation model to three different studies aimed at investigating correlations between pressure and population metrics, exploring the viability of different mortality levels in long-term scenarios and predicting the effects of combined management measures. Uncertainty was incorporated into the simulations following the Monte Carlo paradigm. Three stocks were used for these exercises: red mullet in the central-southern Tyrrhenian Sea and European hake in both the Bay of Biscay and the Aegean Sea. The analysis of the relationships between total mortality and indicators highlighted significant pairwise negative correlations for red mullet. These signals of decline were supported by the spawning potential ratio indicator (mean exploited to mean unexploited spawning-stock biomass ESSB/USSB), which was low compared to target levels. It only remained within safe bounds (> 0.2; probability: 0.90–0.95) at total mortality levels lower than 1.6. The simulation results for European hake in the Bay of Biscay showed that a sustainable exploitation rate might range from 0.87 to 1.04. The benefits of combined management measures were demonstrated for European hake in the Aegean Sea, and with a further dataset on the Eastern cod stock in the Baltic Sea. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Ideas and considerations are put forward for managing fisheries and marine populations using primarily trawl surveys to supply biological and spatial indicators of the state of stocks, and to permit catch per unit effort (CPUE)-based assessments. Trawl surveys seldom allow absolute estimates of fish population sizes but, if appropriately located, timed, and designed, can provide a broad range of information about catchable fish species and the ecosystem that supports them. This information may be more conducive to sustainable management of fisheries than the traditional focus on the abundances of selected stocks. The paper first briefly proposes how survey-based methods might supplement existing fishery-dependent stock assessments, as would be necessary during a transition phase to a more ecosystem-orientated system of management. Full survey-based management is then considered in relation to management objectives, the selection of indicators, survey design, reference periods, levels and directions, statistical aspects, CPUE-based assessments, and management responses to good and bad signals from the ecosystem. We argue that existing fishery-dependent stock assessments cannot be claimed to produce absolute estimates of stock abundance and fishing mortality because natural mortality (M) is seldom known accurately and, therefore, that they should not be presumed superior to the relative information from surveys, and an agreeable form of adaptive management. A time series of hake abundance data obtained from the “MEDITS” experimental surveys carried out in the Greek seas from 1996 to 2006 have been modeled by means of Generalized Additive Models (GAMs), as functions of spatial and temporal variables, including sampling position (latitude–longitude interaction), depth, and year. All variables were highly significant but most of the variation was explained by the sampling position and the depth. Total abundance was higher in the 100–450 m depth zone, while juveniles showed preference for shallower waters, being more abundant from 100 to 320 m. Model predictions were used to generate density distributions maps, which revealed that total abundance is relatively higher in the western part of the Aegean Sea and in the eastern part of the Cretan Sea, while its maximum values are expected in the Saronikos Gulf. Illex coindetii is the most common benthic ommastrephid squid exploited by bottom trawl in the Mediterranean Sea. A recent study examining trends in population metrics based on data from the International Bottom Trawl Surveys in the Mediterranean (MEDITS) has shown an increasing trend in average lengths of I. coindetii sampled in the eastern Ionian Sea, suggesting that this is possibly due to the thermoaline circulation reversal and the warming of the entire water column in this area after 1998 because of the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT). In this study, spatial and inter-annual variability of the population structure and the distribution patterns of I. coindetii in the eastern Ionian is investigated in relation to environmental characteristics. Datasets used include demographical and biological data derived from the MEDITS surveys carried out during the summers of 1994–2006 and environmental parameters obtained through CTD sampling and remotely sensed imagery. Analyses performed include descriptive methods like the length frequency analyses and GIS mapping of standardized densities, as well as habitat modelling of presence data for different life stages of I. coindetii (based on generalized additive models and maximum entropy). An increasing trend in frequency of occurrence and density indices for all life stages has been detected during the studied period, being more evident after 1999. At the same time a temporal shift in seasonal maturation was also evidenced, coinciding to the warming of eastern Ionian waters due to EMT effects. Spawning aggregations occurred steadily on the upper slope of the relatively more protected area west of the Kefalonia Island, extending also over the lower shelf of the Patraikos Gulf in summers with lower upwelling activity. The inter-annual variability observed in the location of main recruitment areas could be related to mechanisms affecting post-hatching dispersal during late winter and spring, when maximum intensity of surface mesoscale activity has been observed. Depth was found the principal variable associated with the distribution of I. coindetii in the study area. Anomalies of surface temperature and chlorophyll-a, as well as distances from coast and thermal fronts were also selected for the final set of response variables without, however, showing any clear trend particularly in the case of recruits. The results of this study highlight the importance of a more comprehensive study of both environmental processes and I. coindetii life history in the Ionian Sea, in order to improve the understanding of its dynamics and the links with environmental variability. Generalized Additive Modelling (GAM) techniques were used to model the time series of abundance data of deep-water pink shrimp, collected during the MEDITS bottom trawl surveys carried out in the Greek seas from 1996 to 2006, as functions of the sampling location (longitude–latitude), depth and year. The life stages of the species were taken into account. All variables were highly significant, although latitude and depth had always the highest explanatory power. The total abundance was higher between 100 and 400 m of depth, with juveniles and adults being more abundant in the 100–200 m and 200–400 m depth strata, respectively. GAM prediction maps showed high abundance concentration areas for all life stages mainly in the Aegean Sea. The most important nursery ground identified was located in the Saronikos Gulf and a secondary in the Thracian Sea. Concerning the concentration areas of the adult specimens, they are located mainly in the Saronikos Gulf, the Thracian Sea, the Thermaikos Gulf, the Cretan Sea and the eastern part of the Aegean. Data were collected during an exploratory trawl survey in the deep waters (300-900 m) of the southern part of the Greek Ionian Sea. A multivariate analysis of the abundance of the species in the various stations revealed the existence of two main distinct groups corresponding to the depth zones 300-500 m and 500-900 m. A secondary separation between the stations of the zone 500-700 m and those of the zone 700-900 m was observed. In the shallowest zone, the dominant species was Chlorophthalmus agassizii followed by Plesionika edwardsii, Hymenocephalus italicus, Argentina sphyraena and Plesionika antigai. In the depth stratum 500-700 m, the most abundant species were Aristaeomorpha foliacea, Plesionika martia, Chlorophthalmus agassizii and Hoplostethus mediterraneus. The most abundant species in the depth stratum 700-900 m were the red shrimps Aristaeomorpha foliacea and Aristeus antennatus. The results of the assemblage composition are compared to those of other relevant areas and are discussed considering the fishing intensity and environmental conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
