Morphological and molecular studies of the taxa of the Biomphalaria tenagophila complex were conducted on specimens from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The morphological analysis included aspects of the shell, mantle, excretory organs and reproductive system. DNA barcode, ABGD and mPTP were used to group specimens into Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) and in attempt to solve species boundary delimitation problems within the Biomphalaria tenagophila complex. Population analyzes were also performed based on the cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) and 16S genes. The seminal vesicle, extension of the oviduct in relation to the distal ovispermioduct, vaginal pouch, aspect of the penial complex, aspect of the prepuce diaphragm, diaphragm papilla, extension of the penial sheath in relation to the prepuce and prepuce dimensions are essential for the determination of the taxa of the Biomphalaria tenagophila complex. An updated molecular phylogeny for Biomphalaria based on COI, 16S and ITS2 genes is presented and recover Biomphalaria tenagophila complex as monophyletic. The morphological, population and phylogenetic data observed in an integrated way define taxonomic questions, such as the proposition of a new status for B. guaibensis, which integrates into the Biomphalaria tenagophila complex. Invasion of alien species is one of the major environmental problems in the globalised world. Therefore, identifying pathways for the introduction and spread of alien species can help to mitigate their impact on invaded ecosystems. This study focused on the freshwater snail Gyraulus chinensis, which invades Europe from eastern Eurasia, where it is native. It was first recorded in Europe about 50 years ago and has since expanded its distribution. However, its origin and the mechanisms of its spread have not yet been studied. Therefore, we performed molecular identification and estimated its origin and dispersal mechanisms based on a literature review, molecular phylogenetics, and population genetics. We found that the haplotypes of G. chinensis in Europe are closely related to southern East Asia, namely Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands. The results also suggest multiple introductions, mainly due to the diversity of haplotypes detected in European G. chinensis populations. Currently, the distribution and invasion of the species in the outdoor environments are concentrated in southern Europe, probably due to thermal constraints. However, the species has been recorded in many indoor habitats in the northern part of Europe, indicating a high potential for its spread in the warmer world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The freshwater gastropod fauna of Serbia can be considered understudied compared to the neighbouring countries. This is especially true for the species that frequently occur in smaller and transient habitats such as Aplexa hypnorum (Linnaeus, 1758), Physa fontinalis (Linnaeus, 1758), Anisus (Disculifer) vorticulus (Troschel, 1834), Hippeutis complanatus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Segmentina nitida (O.F. Müller, 1774). Our survey of various smaller habitats in the Pannonian part of Serbia took place in 2021 and 2022 and included 11 sites. One or more of the above-mentioned snail species were found at nine of these sites. Of particular interest are the findings of A. hypnorum, the species whose last and only confirmed finding dated back to the beginning of the 20th century. In total, we present three new localities of A. hypnorum and S. nitida. The number of known localities of A. vorticulus and H. complanatus has doubled (now seven and eight localities respectively). Physa fontinalis, a native species once quite common in the Pannonian areas, is with a declining frequency. During our survey, an abundant population of P. fontinalis was found at a new site. The results presented suggest that a comprehensive survey focusing on smaller and neglected habitats is necessary to fill the gaps in our knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of the freshwater gastropod fauna in Serbia. Freshwater snails are commonly studied within the context of their role as intermediate hosts for digenetic trematodes. However, there are fundamental data deficiencies related to our understanding of directly transmitted parasites, such as coccidia, for freshwater snails. Because variation in coccidia pathogenicity and transmission among snail species likely has major impacts on snail community structure, we aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and prevalence of coccidia in several freshwater snail species throughout the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains ecoregions in Arkansas. We opportunistically collected 220 freshwater snails from 24 Ozark sites in summer 2022 and scanned fecal slides for the presence of coccidia. In summer 2023, we surveyed an additional 146 snails from 19 Ouachita sites. To test for apparent interactions among coccidia and trematodes, we scanned feces from a subset of snails (Physa and Planorbella in the Ozarks) that did not have concurrent trematode infections and from those that did. We observed oocysts that morphologically conformed to Pfeifferinella ellipsoides in 2 of the 9 snail taxa from 7 of the 43 sites. Planorbella trivolvis was infected at 2 of 6 sites in the Ozarks and 0 of 5 sites in the Ouachitas. Physa species were infected at 6 of 14 sites in the Ozarks and 0 of 12 sites in the Ouachitas. In the Ozarks, Pl. trivolvis had an overall prevalence of 0.13 (6 of 47), whereas individuals in the genus Physa had an overall prevalence of 0.08 (8 of 97). Our chi-square and Fisher exact tests revealed no significant evidence for trematode–coccidia competition or synergism within the two snail species. There were no other species infected, and we did not observe any coccidia in the snails from the Ouachitas. Our survey of 366 snails among 9 taxa and 43 sites represents the largest survey for freshwater snail coccidia to date and indicates that both Pl. trivolvis and Physa spp. may be primary hosts and/or reservoir hosts for Pf. ellipsoides in freshwater snail communities. The highly aggregated distribution of Pf. ellipsoides in northwestern Arkansas requires further investigation. The Great African Lakes in Uganda (Lake Albert and Lake Victoria) are known habitats to several sympatric species of Biomphalaria , intermediate snail hosts of the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni. However, accurate identification of snails by morphology alone can be problematic, highlighting a need for robust, on-site identification methods, since only certain species have important roles in parasite transmission. This study investigates the conchological variation within Biomphalaria species collected from these two Great East African Lakes. We compared the shell morphologies of Biomphalaria species using landmark-based morphometric techniques and were able to distinguish Biomphalaria species through canonical variate analysis (CVA) of the apical and apertural shell angles. After identification with molecular methods, three Biomphalaria species (B. pfeifferi , B. stanleyi , and B. sudanica), with heterogenous occurrences along the shoreline, were identified at Lake Albert that could be differentiated from one another using CVA of apical and apertural datasets; by contrast, a single Biomphalaria species was identified at Lake Victoria (B. choanomphala). When snails from both lakes were compared together, CVA was able to differentiate all four species using the apical dataset but not the apertural dataset. Of the Biomphalaria species identified, ecological phenotypic variation was only found in B. choanomphala , which exhibited two distinct ecological morphotypes. Furthermore, these two B. choanomphala morphotypes from Lake Victoria overlapped upon analysis of the apical dataset, yet were clearly separated upon analysis of the apertural dataset. Long‐distance dispersal (LDD) is a critical process in the distribution of less‐migratory organisms. Migratory birds are considered the principal vector of LDD, especially over extremely long distances such as between continents. However, there has been no evidence of LDD spanning thousands of kilometers, even via birds. In this study, we collected a freshwater snail attached to a Latham's snipe. This snail was identified as the genus Glyptophysa through morphological and molecular identification based on four genetic regions. Considering the migration route of the bird and the distribution of the molluscan genus, we conclude that the snail was attached to a bird which migrated over 4000 km across the ocean. This finding demonstrates the LDD on an intercontinental scale of an organism via a migratory bird, which many biologists have long presumed to occur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dispersal is a fundamental mechanism for maintaining biodiversity, and long‐distance dispersal (LDD) has attracted the interest of many researchers owing to its unusual characteristics. Conventionally, LDD has been defined based on absolute and proportional distances; however, it has recently been redefined based on geographic and genetic limits. Based on this redefinition, short‐distance dispersal can have the same characteristics as LDD, depending upon the dispersal dynamics of an organism. However, the effects of LDD at a local scale on the genetic structure and diversification of organisms are poorly understood, since many studies have focused on definitive LDD, such as oversea dispersal.We focused on the freshwater snail Gyraulus sp. on an oceanic island, Chichijima Island, attempting to clarify the dynamics and effects of LDD on its genetic structure. We conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses, including divergence‐time estimation, using mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA markers to reveal the origin of the snail. In addition, we clarified the genetic structure, gene flow, and evolutionary history of snails on the island using mitochondrial DNA and genome‐wide single‐nucleotide polymorphisms. Finally, we followed a landscape ecology approach to identify barriers to dispersal.Our phylogenies suggested that the snail has a single origin. Based on our divergence–time estimation, colonisation was estimated to have occurred around the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene. Our population genetic analyses documented genetic differentiation even within this small oceanic island. Based on the divergence time estimation and approximate Bayesian computation using single‐nucleotide polymorphisms, the differentiation was estimated to have begun around the late Pleistocene. Little gene flow occurred between the geographically structured snail genetic groups. Landscape analysis suggested that catchment boundaries were a major barrier to dispersal.Considering the geography of the island, these results suggested that low‐frequency dispersal over barriers is an important factor in genetic differentiation within the island. Furthermore, dispersal over barrier may be considered LDD, even though the dispersal distance is only several kilometres.Genetic evidence also suggested that resistance to gene flow over the barrier, rather than distance, is more important in determining whether dispersal should be considered LDD. Gastropoda are an important component of the freshwater benthic communities of Western Siberia and participate in a number of trophic relationships and as the intermediate hosts of trematodes. The purpose of this study is defining the ratio of Bithyniidae mollusks between other gastropods with regard to species diversity, and to compile all information about the abundance of bithyniid snails that we examined over 27 years in four major basins situated in the Novosibirsk region. Analyzing the data diversity and abundance of gastropod communities from freshwater ecosystems south of Western Siberia, we found that 22% of the water bodies contained bithyniid snails. In total, 201 samples that were abundant with bithyniid snails of reproductive age were collected in 34 localities in 25 water bodies. While these freshwater snails are not abundant in most of the inspected reservoirs (fewer than 10 mollusks per square meter), two of the water bodies accommodated a great number of Bithyniidae (more than 100 ind.·m−2). Bithyniid snail abundance may vary tenfold in different years in the same water body. This and the study of seasonal dynamics show that the abundance of bithyniid snails of reproductive age decreased from June to August in all years. Biological invasions are common among freshwater molluscs, with the North American planorbid gastropod Gyraulus parvus being reported from Europe (Germany) by the 1970s. It has since spread across Central and Western Europe, mostly living in artificial and highly modified habitats. However, considerable conchological and anatomical similarity exists between it and the native European G. laevis. Using four other European and one North American Gyraulus species as outgroups, separate phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences show that G. parvus and G. laevis are in fact part of the same species-level clade, with the former having nomenclatural priority. However, the structure within the mitochondrial tree suggests a North American origin of the invasive populations. It also makes it possible to track down the distribution of both races. Although native and non-native races in Europe tend to possess some differences in conchology and ecology, the degree of overlap makes it impossible to accurately distinguish between them without the DNA barcode data. Our results change the outlook on the conservation of the rare native race. While interspecific competition among snail species is rare, invasion on an intraspecific level may represent a serious threat for native populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freshwater mollusc species were collected in Bulgaria (2007, Varna Region) and Greece (2013, Corfu Island) by one of the present authors (MLZ). Within this material, five new species were detected and described in the present article: Bithynia beloslavensis n. sp. from Bulgaria and Bithynia corfuensis n. sp., Pseudobithynia nigra n. sp., Gyraulus messonghi n. sp. and Pseudamnicola kavosensis n. sp. from Corfu Island, Greece. Trematode-induced castration of snails is widespread and can lead to other life history changes of snails such as changes in trajectories of size and growth or survival. The changes produced likely depend on whether the parasite or host controls allocation of host resources remaining after partial or complete cessation of host current reproduction by castrating trematodes. Documenting host life history changes, like changes in host size in response to castration, is a first step in assessing whether these changes are beneficial to the parasite (increasing transmission success) or to the host (outliving the infection) or to neither. Herein, we test for differences in size and survival among individuals of two snail species in relation to infection by Echinostoma spp. trematodes. Active shedding of Echinostoma spp. was associated with castration of all Stagnicola elodes snails from a site in Eastern Ontario. Snails actively shedding cercariae were not different in size from non-shedding, egg-laying snails but had a higher mortality than egg-laying snails. Active shedding of Echinostoma spp. cercariae was also associated with castration of nearly all Helisoma trivolvis monitored, from a site in Southwestern Ontario. Actively shedding, non-laying H. trivolvis hosts were smaller on average than non-shedding egg-laying hosts, but both non-laying and egg-laying snails survived equally well. We discuss these results in light of what is known about effects of castration on snail hosts in terms of growth and survival for these and other trematode species and speculate on whether changes in size or survival benefits parasite or host. The file ramshorn snail Planorbella pilsbryi Baker, 1926 (Gastropoda: Hygrophila: Planorbidae) is a widespread herbivorous North American freshwater snail found in diverse habitats, including standing and moving water bodies. Genome skimming by Illumina sequencing allowed the assembly of a complete nuclear rRNA repeat sequence and a complete circular mitogenome of 13,720 bp from P. pilsbryi consisting of 75.3% AT nucleotides, 22 tRNAs, 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs and a control region in the typical order found in panpulmonate snails. Planorbella pilsbryi COXI features a rare TTG start codon while COXII, CYTB, ND2, ND3, and ND5 exhibit incomplete stop codons completed by the addition of 3′ A residues to the mRNA. Phylogenetic reconstruction of mitochondrial protein-coding gene and rRNA sequences places P. pilsbryi as sister taxon to Planorbella duryi (Planorbidae) within family Planorbidae, which is consistent with previous phylogenetic hypotheses. A new species of the family Planorbidae is described from the land thermal spring Khakusy, on the northeastern shore of Lake Baikal. The description of Gyraulus takhteevi sp. n. includes morphological characters and gene sequences (COI of mtDNA) for the species separation from sister taxon Gyraulus acronicus (A. Férussac, 1807) collected from the small Krestovka River in-flowing into the south-western part of the Lake. The new species differs from G. acronicus in small shell size of adults, having smaller number of prostate folds (maximal up to 26 in G. takhteevi n. sp. vs. 40 in G. acronicus), a short preputium (approximately twice shorter than the phallotheca), and an elongated bursa copulatrix. The population of Gyraulus takhteevi sp. n. consists of two co-existent morphs: one of them has a narrow shell spire and the second is characterized by wide spire similar to the shell of G. acronicus. One of the two revealed haplotypes of the new species includes both morphs, while the second consists of snails with wide spired shells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was carried out to understand the factors that affect community structure and generate heterogeneity in gastropod species diversity in various types of man-made ponds (e.g., subsidence ponds, sand pits and fish ponds at forested and non-forested locations). The studied waterbodies differed in water chemistry, bottom sediment type, source and drainage of water and in terms of snail occurrence patterns. Differences in gastropod species composition were related to differences in bottom sediments and water chemistry. Two-way indicator species analysis split the clusters into four groups with respect to substratum type and location. In contrast to the well-studied trematode fauna of lymnaeid snails, only little is known about the role of small planorbid snails as first intermediate hosts for trematodes in temperate freshwater systems. This study aims at closing this gap by assessing the diversity and composition of larval trematode communities in Gyraulus albus and Segmentina nitida in a Central European reservoir system, and by providing an updated comprehensive review of the published trematode records of these snail hosts. A total of 3691 planorbid snails (3270 G. albus; 421 S. nitida) was collected in three consecutive years from four reservoirs of the River Ruhr catchment area in Germany. Gyraulus albus showed a higher overall trematode prevalence (11.7%) and more diverse trematode fauna (12 species) compared to S. nitida, which harboured three species and showed a lower trematode prevalence (1.7%). Altogether, 13 trematode species belonging to four families were identified in both hosts. Seven trematode species encountered in this study represent novel records for these hosts, and/or constitute first records of these larval stages from Germany. Trematode component communities in G. albus were stable across seasons and years, indicating excellent conditions for trematodes in this snail host and the continuous presence of the final hosts of the most dominant trematode species. Overall, this study reveals the importance of small planorbid snails, in particular G. albus, as first intermediate hosts for a species-rich trematode fauna in European freshwater systems, and highlights the parasites' contribution to the ecosystem's biodiversity. We report digeneans (Diplostomidae, Crassiphialinae) in the endangered freshwater fishes Valencia letourneuxi and Valencia robertae, endemics of Western Greece. Digenean metacercariae occurred in two forms in the abdominal cavity, excysted and encysted, the latter attached to the gonads, liver and alimentary tract. Parasites were, using morphological and molecular techniques, identified as two representatives of Crassiphialinae, specifically part of the Posthodiplostomum- Ornithodiplostomum clade. The spatial, seasonal, and age class variation in parasite prevalence was examined. Autumn parasite prevalence varied between the six populations sampled (18.2 to 100%). Seasonal prevalence at the two sites sampled quadannually peaked in autumn and reached its lowest value in spring; prevalence increased with size to 100% in young adult fish. We did not find a correlation between prevalence and host sex. Overall parasites' weight averaged 0.64% of the host's, while parasite weight increased with host weight. A comparison of relative condition and hepatosomatic and gonadosomatic indices of infected and metacercariae-free specimens showed that infection did not have a significant effect on host body condition and reproduction. Regarding the parasite's life cycle, planorbid gastropods are proposed as potential first intermediate hosts in view of the host's diet and occurrence data of molluscs in the ecosystem. This is the first record of a diplostomid digenean in valenciid fishes and of representatives of the Posthodiplostomum- Ornithodiplostomum clade in a native Greek freshwater fish. Research on behavioural fever in Planorbarius corneus was undertaken using a longitudinal thermal gradient. Before the experiment, snails were acclimated at 19 °C. Following injections of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, a pyrogenic agent), ketoprofen (an antipyretic) or saline solution (control), thermal behaviour of the animals was automatically recorded for 48 h. The results demonstrated that LPS-induced symptoms of behavioural fever were inhibited by ketoprofen. Additionally, it was observed that snails which, before the injection of LPS, were preinjected with ketoprofen showed symptoms of behavioural fever with a 20-h delay. This result shows the inhibitory effect of ketoprofen on the occurrence of behavioural fever symptoms in P. corneus. It may suggest some similarity in mechanism of enhanced thermal preference in snails to vertebrate fever--both effectively inhibited by aspirin-like anti-inflammatory compounds. Many chemicals are applied for disinfecting purposes. Although chlorination is the most common procedure, it has many drawbacks. So there becomes an urgent need for new chemicals which are both effective and less harmful to other water fauna. The present work aims at investigating the comparative effects of chlorine and Huwa-san as a new disinfectant on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails which act as bioindicators of toxicity, besides evaluating their miracicidal and cercaricidal activities. The results showed that Huwa-san was more toxic on tested snails than chlorine, where the LC values were 21 and 1368.9 ppm, respectively after 24 h. Also, it was found that the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in snails' tissues were either induced or inhibited according to the tested disinfectant. Regarding reduced glutathione (GSH) content, it was increased as chlorine concentrations increased, while it reached its minimum content at the highest Huwa-san concentration. Such fluctuations were supported by histopathological examination of digestive and hermaphrodite glands, as prolonged exposure to chlorine led to more detrimental effects than Huwa-san concentrations. Moreover, Huwa-san was more effective on Schistosoma mansoni miracidia than on its cercariae, while the reverse was observed with chlorine. In conclusion, Huwa-san as a newly applied disinfectant can also be used as miracicidal and cercaricidal agent at small concentrations. Despite being more toxic to B. alexandrina snails, the chronic effect of its sublethal concentrations is less harmful than chlorine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of sub-lethal concentrations of bisphenol A on some biochemical parameters inBiomphalariaalexandrinasnail's hemolymph and tissues as well as on histological changes of the hermaphrodite gland were evaluated. Adult snails were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations for four weeks and samples of snails were investigated after two and four weeks. Total protein and albumin levels in hemolymph, as well as lipid peroxidation and glutathione contents of snails’ tissues, were measured. After two weeks of exposure, total protein content and albumin levels decreased in all groups. Elevation of lipid peroxidation levels was correlated with decreasing glutathione content in the treated snails. Paramphistomoids are ubiquitous and widespread digeneans that infect a diverse range of definitive hosts, being particularly speciose in ruminants. We collected adult worms from cattle, goats and sheep from slaughterhouses, and cercariae from freshwater snails from ten localities in Central and West Kenya. We sequenced cox1 (690 bp) and internal transcribed region 2 (ITS2) (385 bp) genes from a small piece of 79 different adult worms and stained and mounted the remaining worm bodies for comparisons with available descriptions. We also sequenced cox1 and ITS2 from 41 cercariae/rediae samples collected from four different genera of planorbid snails. Combining morphological observations, host use information, genetic distance values and phylogenetic methods, we delineated 16 distinct clades of paramphistomoids. For four of the 16 clades, sequences from adult worms and cercariae/rediae matched, providing an independent assessment for their life cycles. Much work is yet to be done to resolve fully the relationships among paramphistomoids, but some correspondence between sequence- and anatomically based classifications were noted. Paramphistomoids of domestic ruminants provide one of the most abundant sources of parasitic flatworm biomass, and because of the predilection of several species use Bulinus and Biomphalaria snail hosts, have interesting linkages with the biology of animal and human schistosomes to in Africa. Background: Mitochondrial (mt) genome sequences are widely used for species identification and to study the phylogenetic relationships among Gastropoda. However, to date, limited data are available as taxon sampling is narrow. In this study we sequenced the complete mt genomes of the freshwater gastropods Radix swinhoei (Lymnaeidae) and Planorbarius corneus (Planorbidae). Based on these sequences, we investigated the gene rearrangement in these two species and the relationships with respect to the ancestral gene order and assessed their phylogenetic relationships. Methods: The complete mt genomes of R. swinhoei and P. corneus were sequenced using Illumina-based paired-end sequencing and annotated by comparing the sequence information with that of related gastropod species. Putative models of mitochondrial gene rearrangements were predicted for both R. swinhoei and P. corneus, using Reishia clavigera mtDNA structure as the ancestral gene order. The phylogenetic relationships were inferred using thirteen protein sequences based on Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses. Results: The complete circular mt genome sequences of R. swinhoei and P. corneus were 14,241 bp and 13,687 bp in length, respectively. Comparison of the gene order demonstrated complex rearrangement events in Gastropoda, both for tRNA genes and protein-coding genes. The phylogenetic analyses showed that the family Lymnaeidae was more closely related to the family Planorbidae, consistent with previous classification. Nevertheless, due to the position recovered for R. swinhoei, the family Lymnaeidae was not monophyletic. Conclusion: This study provides the complete mt genomes of two freshwater snails, which will aid the development of useful molecular markers for epidemiological, ecological and phylogenetic studies. In the last few decades, findings of freshwater limpets belonging to the genus Ferrissia have been frequent and widely distributed throughout the Palaearctic and beyond. The widespread presence of a Nearctic alien taxon was proved, but no consensus was achieved about the possible existence of autochthonous Ferrissia taxa in the area, an occurrence which would be supported by the presence of gastropod fossils attributed to the genus throughout Eurasia and North Africa. In order to test the hypothesis of a possible persistence of autochthonous Ferrissia taxa in the Palaearctic to the present day, all the published data on the genetic diversity of Ferrissia populations occurring in the area were reviewed, expanding also the currently available dataset through dedicated sampling surveys in Italy, Malta and Spain. Here, based on currently published and novel large ribosomal subunit 16S rRNA (16S) and cytochrome oxidase sub-unit 1 (COI) sequences, the presence of the allochthonous Ferrissia californica in the whole Palaearctic was confirmed. Conversely, no evidence supporting the presence of autochthonous Ferrissia taxa was obtained. Ferrissia californica proved to be a highly invasive taxon (in spite of its extremely low genetic diversity) throughout the invaded regions, which is possibly related to the species' ability of asexual reproduction. The parasitic flatworm Schistosoma mansoni, causative agent of human intestinal schistosomiasis in South America, relies importantly on the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata as intermediate host to achieve development of cercariae that infect humans. The recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) to integrate snail control in efforts to counter schistosomiasis transmission provides impetus for in depth study of B. glabrata biology. Our analysis indicates that two distinct hemocyanin-like genes (hcl-1 and hcl-2) are present in B. glabrata, a snail that uses hemoglobin for oxygen transport. Characterization of BAC clones yielded the full length hcl-1 gene, which is comprised of three functional unit (FU) domains at the amino acid level. Database searches and in silico analyses identified the second hcl gene (hcl-2), composed of six FU domains. Both genes are unusual for lacking canonical residues and having fewer FU domains than typical molluscan hemocyanins that contain 7–8 FUs. Reverse transcription PCR demonstrated that Hcl-1 is expressed in a manner that correlates with reproductive maturity in the albumen gland (AG), an immune- and reproduction-relevant organ. Immune cross-reactivity with anti-keyhole limpet hemocyanin (α-KLH) antiserum and tandem-mass spectrometry validated the presence of Hcl-1 protein in the AG and egg mass fluid (EMF). The evolutionary conservation of hemocyanin-like sequences in B. glabrata in the presence of the oxygen carrier hemoglobin, combined with our results, suggest that the Hcl-1protein has a functional role in general and/or reproductive biology. Sperm morphology offers a rich source of potentially informative characters for gastropod taxonomy and in this study it was used to provide additional information forGyraulus(Armiger)crista(Linnaeus, 1758), whose taxonomic position within the Planorbidae Rafinesque, 1815 remains uncertain. Sperm morphology inG. (A.)cristaandG. (Gyraulus)albus(Müller, 1774), the type species of the genus, was examined using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The ultrastructure of spermatozoa in the two species was found to conform to the general pattern characteristic of the Hygrophila Férussac, 1822: the spermatozoa had an anterior head containing an acrosomal complex (apical vesicle and acrosomal pedestal) and cone-shaped nucleus, followed by a very long midpiece with glycogen spirals, and then by a glycogen piece and tail. Although the spermatozoa of the two species shared some common features (one nuclear keel and four glycogen spirals), they differed significantly in length, morphology of the annulus and structure of the spiral surface ridges. There were also some differences in the size and structure of the acrosomal pedestal and the shape of the nucleus. Although the morphology of spermatozoa has been successfully used in the phylogenetic analysis of various animal groups, its utility for inferring phylogenetic relationships within the Planorbidae s. l. remains limited, because the sperm ultrastructure is currently known in only seven species of this family. The purpose of the present study was to study sperm in Planorbis planorbis (Linnaeus, 1758), the type species of the genus on which the family is based, and Segmentina nitida (O.F. Müller, 1774), and to supplement brief earlier descriptions of sperm in Ancylus fluviatilis O.F. Müller, 1774 and Planorbarius corneus (Linnaeus, 1758). Sperm ultrastructure in these four species is typical for the Hygrophila: the sperm cells are subdivided in an anterior-to-posterior sequence into acrosomal complex, nucleus, midpiece, glycogen piece and free flagellum. The spermatozoa of the four species, however, differ significantly in their total length, the shape and size of the head and nucleus, the shape and structure of the acrosomal complex, the internal structure, arrangement and number of ridges and glycogen helices in the midpiece, the structure of the annulus and the length of the glycogen region. The most morphologically distinct sperm, characterized by a unique flask-shaped nucleus, was found in S. nitida. The study presents a set of potentially phylogenetically useful sperm characters and assesses their usefulness for phylogenetic analysis within the Planorbidae and Hygrophila. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The gastropod mollusc Biomphalaria glabrata is well known as a vector for the tropical disease schistosomiasis, which affects nearly 200 million people worldwide. Despite intensive study, our understanding of the genetic basis of B. glabrata development, growth and disease resistance is constrained by limited genetic resources, constraints for which next-generation sequencing methods provide a ready solution. Methods: Illumina sequencing and de novo assembly using the Trinity program was used to generate a highquality transcriptomic dataset spanning the entirety of in ovo development in schistosomiasis-free B. glabrata. This was subjected to automated (KEGG, BLAST2GO) and manual annotation efforts, allowing insight into the gene complements of this species in a number of contexts. Results: Excellent dataset recovery was observed, with 133,084 contigs produced of mean size 2219.48 bp. 80,952 (60.8 %) returned a BLASTx hit with an E value of less than 10-3, and 74,492 (55.97 %) were either mapped or assigned a GO identity using the BLAST2GO program. The CEGMA set of core eukaryotic genes was found to be 99. 6 % present, indicating exceptional transcriptome completeness. We were able to identify a wealth of diseasepathway related genes within our dataset, including the Wnt, apoptosis and Notch pathways. This provides an invaluable reference point for further work into molluscan development and evolution, for studying the impact of schistosomiasis in this species, and perhaps providing targets for the treatment of this widespread disease. Conclusions: Here we present a deep transcriptome of an embryonic sample of schistosomiasis-free B. glabrata, presenting a comprehensive dataset for comparison to disease-affected specimens and from which conclusions can be drawn about the genetics of this widespread medical model. Furthermore, the dataset provided by this sequencing provides a useful reference point for comparison to other mollusc species, which can be used to better understand the evolution of this commercially, ecologically and medically important phylum. Individual growth of the great ramshorn snail Planorbarius corneus has been studied by intravital video imaging. As has been observed, the types of growth change over the embryogenesis. The linear dimensions slightly but in a statistically significant manner decrease during the stages of cleavage to blastula. Starting from the stage of blastula to trochophore, the embryo diameter remains constant to commence increasing at the stage of middle trochophore. During the larval stages (trochophore and veliger), the growth is synchronous (in Dettlaffs, biological time units) for the embryos in both the same clutch and different clutches. The growth at that time is exponential but later desynchronizes in individual clutches. The embryos in eight clutches grew and developed slower and hatched later as compared with the remaining five egg clutches. An accelerated growth follows an asymptomatic pattern according to the von Bertalanffy equation. A retarded growth is describable with a linear equation. The observed differences are likely to be associated with the number of embryos in a clutch. All types of changes in the linear dimensions observed in the great ramshorn snail embryogenesis can be described with the same united equation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After numerous reports the local press about the 'stinging water' in created on the Dzierżęcinka River-Water Valley reservoir and recognizing in bathers the symptoms of swimmers' itch, environmental study on the presence of bird schistosome larvae in snail hosts was conducted. Snails belonging to Lymnaeidae and Planorbidae were collected at two sites: (i) part of anthropogenic reservoir (192 individuals) and (ii) the river part (37 individuals). Higher prevalence of Digenea was observed in snail populations living in Water Valley (29.8 %) compared to Dzierżęcinka River (21.3 %). The larvae of bird schistosomes were recorded in both localities in 1.8 % of collected snails. The prevalence of bird schistosomes reached 2.9 % in Planorbarius corneus, 2.8 % in Radix auricularia, and 5.9 % in Radix balthica/labiata. Laboratory tests have shown that at 19 °C the number of bird schistosome cercariae released from snail hosts significantly exceeded the number of cercariae of other identified Digenea species. It is worth underlining that despite the low prevalence of bird schistosomes, the high number of released cercariae was sufficient to create a real threat of swimmers' itch in bathers. As indicated by the example presented, anthropogenic reservoirs create excellent conditions for Digenea species including bird schistosomes. In view of the real risk of people using the waters, tests on presence of the parasites in snail hosts should be included to the standard procedure of security control in bathing places. Ocular diplostomiasis is caused by trematode species in the family Diplostomidae, specifically those in the genera Austrodiplostomum, Diplostomum, and Tylodelphys. Diplostomid trematodes are globally distributed parasites of fish. Heavy infections of diplostomids that parasitize the eyes of fish can result in acute mortality while chronic infections are often characterized by impaired vision or blindness. In the southeastern United States, commercial catfish production is threatened by piscivorous birds and the many trematode species that parasitize them. The life cycles typically involve a piscivorous avian definitive host, a mollusk first intermediate host, and a fish second intermediate host. A survey of parasites infecting the snail host Biomphalaria havanensis (= B. obstructa) in catfish production ponds was undertaken. Snails were collected from 2 separate ponds during the summer of 2014 and observed for the release of trematode cercariae. A total of 1,740 snails were collected. Three distinct longifurcate pharyngeate cercariae were observed and these cercariae were characterized morphologically and molecularly. Sequencing of ∼4,200 base pairs (bp) of the nuclear ribosomal genes and ∼450 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase gene revealed 3 genetically distinct species. One morphotype shared 99-100% sequence identity with metacercariae from the aqueous and vitreous humors of gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum and channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus as well as an adult trematode, Austrodiplostomum ostrowskiae, a parasite of the double-crested cormorant Nannopterum auritus. The remaining 2 cercariae morphotypes shared 99-100% sequence identity with an unidentified Tylodelphys sp. and Austrodiplostomum sp. metacercaria from the brain and eyes of several freshwater fish. Herein we molecularly link the cercaria, metacercaria, and adult stage of the life cycle of A. ostrowskiae, identifying the snail host for this parasite, in addition to providing notes on 2 cercariae representing 2 other diplostomids. Background: The planorbid freshwater snails of the two genera, Biomphalaria and Bulinus -have been vigorously studied due to the role they play as intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis. In Sudan specifically, most studies have focused on the chemical and ecological control of the two genera, but few studies have looked at their biological control. This study explored the coexistence of other species of freshwater snails and the two genera along with their trematode infections in relation to a number of environmental factors in the East Nile locality, Khartoum state, Sudan. Methods: Freshwater snails from irrigation canals (abueshreens) were sampled monthly from January 2004 to December 2005. The snails were examined for trematode infections by cercarial emergence immediately after collection and then weekly for an additional four weeks to allow for the maturation of prepatent infections. Vegetation cover in the study sites as well as the physicochemical characteristics of the water, including temperature, were also recorded. Results: A total of 10,493 snails, representing seven species, were collected. The most abundant species was Biomphalaria pfeifferi, representing 48.6 % of the sample. Overall, 14.1 % of the snails were found to be shedding some type of cercariae. Five species were found to have infections; among these the Bulinus truncatus species was found to be the most heavily infected, with an overall prevalence of 46.2 %. Double infections were recorded in only two B. truncatus snails and one Cleopatra bulimoides snail. Twenty different morphotypes of cercariae were recorded, seven of which appeared not to conform to previously described cercariae from Africa. Xiphidiocercariae type 1 was the most common type of cercariae recovered, accounting for 44.3 % of all infections. The density of snails tended to be lower during the summer months than the winter months, except for M. tuberculata snails, which were not affected by seasonal changes. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that besides schistosomes, other larval trematodes are found, and some use the same intermediate hosts as the schistosomes. Further studies should be conducted to determine whether some of these trematodes could be manipulated for the biological control of schistosomiasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anthropogenic impacts like intensified land use and climate change are severe threats to freshwater biodiversity and effective biodiversity monitoring is therefore one of the most urgent tasks. This is, however, often hampered by the lack of knowledge regarding the number and ecology of species. Molecular tools have shown many freshwater taxa to comprise morphologically cryptic species, which often occur in sympatry on a small geographic scale. Here, we studied the freshwater snail Ancylus fluviatilis (Mü ller, 1774) species complex in the Iberian Montseny Mountains. We hypothesized that (1) several species of A. fluviatilis sensu lato occur in the Montseny and (2) the different species seldom co-occur in syntopy due to different ecological demands or interspecific competition. We barcoded 180 specimens from 36 sites in the Montseny for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) barcoding gene and molecularly identified two Ancylus species. These species seldom occurred in syntopy and a species distribution modelling approach showed differing bioclimatic preferences of the species. One species occurs mainly in cooler, higher altitude streams while the second species occurs in lower-altitude areas with higher temperatures. Tests of population structure showed that both species possibly do not disperse well in the study area and that populations within species might be adapted to certain bioclimatic conditions in different regions of the Montseny. In view of the call by the World Health Organization (WHO) for elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem by 2025, use of molluscicides in snail control to supplement chemotherapy–based control efforts is likely to increase in the coming years. The mechanisms of action of niclosamide, the active ingredient in the most widely used molluscicides, remain largely unknown. A better understanding of its toxicology at the molecular level will both improve our knowledge of snail biology and may offer valuable insights into the development of better chemical control methods for snails. We used a recently developed Biomphalaria glabrata oligonucleotide microarray (31K features) to investigate the effect of sublethal exposure to niclosamide on the transcriptional responses of the snail B. glabrata relative to untreated snails. Most of the genes highly upregulated following exposure of snails to niclosamide are involved in biotransformation of xenobiotics, including genes encoding cytochrome P450s (CYP), glutathione S-transferases (GST), and drug transporters, notably multi-drug resistance protein (efflux transporter) and solute linked carrier (influx transporter). Niclosamide also induced stress responses. Specifically, six heat shock protein (HSP) genes from three super-families (HSP20, HSP40 and HSP70) were upregulated. Genes encoding ADP-ribosylation factor (ARF), cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and coatomer, all of which are involved in vesicle trafficking in the Golgi of mammalian cells, were also upregulated. Lastly, a hemoglobin gene was downregulated, suggesting niclosamide may affect oxygen transport. Our results show that snails mount substantial responses to sublethal concentrations of niclosamide, at least some of which appear to be protective. The topic of how niclosamide’s lethality at higher concentrations is determined requires further study. Given that niclosamide has also been used as an anthelmintic drug for decades and has been found to have activity against several types of cancer, our findings may be of relevance in understanding how both parasites and neoplastic cells respond to this compound. The often extraordinary shell forms and shapes of gastropods found in palaeolakes, such as the highly diverse Gyraulus fauna of the famous Steinheim Basin, have been puzzling evolutionary biologists for centuries, and there is an ongoing debate whether these aberrant shell forms are indicative of true species (or subspecies) or ecophenotypic morphs. Interestingly, one of the Steinheim Gyraulus morphs - a corkscrew-like open-coiled shell - has a recent analogue in the Lake Bangong drainage system on the western Tibetan Plateau. Therefore, a combination of morphological, molecular, palaeolimnological, and ecological analyses was used in this study to assess whether the extraordinary shell shape in Gyraulus sp. from this drainage system represents a (young) ecophenotypic phenomenon or if it has been genetically fixed over an extended period of time. Our morphological, ecological, and palaeolimnological data suggest that the corkscrew-like specimens remain restricted to a small pond near Lake Bangong with an elevated pH value and that the colonization may have occurred recently. The phylogenetic reconstruction based on two gene fragments shows that these nonplanispiral specimens cluster within the previous described Tibetan Plateau Gyraulus clade N2. A network analysis indicates that some haplotypes are even shared by planispiral and nonplanispiral specimens. Given the ephemerality of the phenomenon, the compact network patterns inferred, the likely young phylogenetic age of the aberrant Gyraulus shells studied, and the ecological peculiarities of the study site, we suggest that the evolution of the aberrant shell forms on the Tibetan Plateau could likely be considered as a rapid ecophenotypic response, possibly induced by ecological stress. This finding may thus have implications for the ongoing debate about the processes that have caused the extraordinary shell diversity in palaeolakes such as the Steinheim Basin. So far in Poland, the North American snail Menetus dilatatus (Gould) has been recorded from the Konin lakes only and, quite recently, from one site in the middle Odra River. One individual of this species was found in each of two sites in the near-shore zone of Lake Kamionkowskie (an isolated oxbow lake) in Skaryszewski Park, Warsaw in June 2014. Living and fixed samples of Schistosoma mansoni-infected Biomphalaria glabrata snails were used to determine the relative contributions of different snail tissues to cercarial emergence (shedding). Three methods of observations were employed: (1) direct microscopical observations of shedding snails; (2) microscopic analysis of 5 μm serial sections (H&E stained) of actively shedding snails; and (3) scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations of snails that were fixed while actively shedding. For this investigation, there were advantages and disadvantages to using each method. We confirmed the results of others that there were 3 tissues of the snail that contributed most prominently to cercarial release (mantle collar, pseudobranch, and headfoot). Based on histological analysis of cercarial accumulations in presumed shedding sites in these 3 tissues, 57% of the cercariae could be seen in the mantle collar, 30.6% in the pseudobranch, and 12.5% in the headfoot. Other anterior structures were involved to a much lesser extent. SEM observations clearly showed cercariae emerging either body first, tail first, or likely emerging en masse from blebs, especially from the mantle collar. These studies provide a more quantitative appraisal of the role the different anterior snail tissues play in cercarial emergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Miocene Steinheim Basin in SW Germany is an ancient (long-lived) palaeo-lake that has existed over some hundreds of thousands of years. It is an iconic fossil site, because the historically oldest phylogenetic tree of extinct organisms was based on specimens described from this locality. Today the basin contains 30-40 m thickness of lake sediments with planorbid snails of the genus Gyraulus occurring in rock-forming quantities. The shells are morphologically highly disparate with forms ranging from the tiny, planispiral founder species Gyraulus kleini, to fragile corkscrew-like uncoiled forms and to large trochiform morphs with thick shells. In total, this presumably monophyletic species flock contains 17 species distributed in time and space, all of which are endemic, except for the founder species. Up to nine of them occur in a single sedimentary level and are inferred to have lived together. Such an extreme rate of endemism makes fossil Lake Steinheim special among extant and fossil lakes. This review article summarises and discusses the species concept(s), indications for endemism, speciation processes, the phylogenetic concept(s) and factors controlling evolution. The article presents a study which focuses on the variation of the morphological, life history, and genetic traits in freshwater snails in Andean Altiplano in Bolivia. The study uses the common garden experiment and morphometric analysis for the evaluation of genetic base in the shell variation of the snail. Results show the association of the size of the shell of snails to the phenotype.

The article presents genetic and morphometric analyses by using snail samples from wetlands in the Andean Altiplano. The analysis was performed to identify genetic, morphological, and life history in freshwater snails. It concludes that the shell size of snails has a genetic basis associated to the phenotype and expression and evolution of life history traits are highly influenced by proximal causes.

One of the best studied freshwater predator-prey interactions is arguably that between crayfish and gastropods. In many ecosystems, crayfish limit populations of thin-shelled snails and induce changes in snail traits. However, the connection between these 2 phenomena and, therefore, the mechanism by which crayfish have population-dynamic effects on snails, has been little studied. I examined the population-level effects of 2 procambarid crayfish (Procambarus alleni and Procambarus fallax) on a 2-species assemblage of snails (physids: Hatia cubensis, planorbids: Planorbella duryi) in experimental mesocosms. Observations early in the experiment suggested that both snail species were responding behaviorally to the crayfish, especially to P. alleni. At the end of the study (8 wk), both species of crayfish had reduced filamentous periphyton by 50% and snail density by >95%. The 2 crayfish species had quantitatively similar effects on both trophic levels. Physids laid eggs early in the study, but they had no size refuge and were almost completely eliminated from the crayfish treatments by the end of the study. Large planorbids had a size refuge and persisted with crayfish, but almost no recruitment occurred in the presence of crayfish. Per-capita egg-laying rates on bottom substrates at the end of the experiment were equal between treatments, results indicating that planorbids persisted in laying eggs and that crayfish continued to consume the hatchlings. The aim of the present work was to study the contractile activity of traumatized nerve cell processes and to attempt to inhibit their retraction using a solution of colchicine. Experiments were performed on living isolated neurons from freshwater mollusks ( Lymnaea stagnalis and Planorbis corneus vulgaris), which were studied in phase contrast conditions using time-lapse microvideo recordings. Contractile activity of nerve cell processes was seen in 92% of cases in control conditions in Ringer’s solution. Colchicine inhibited nerve process contraction in 86% of neurons. Experiments addressing neuron electrical activity were performed on leech Retzius neurons. Incubation of ganglia in colchicine solution was found to increase the frequency of spontaneous spike activity from 0.22 to 0.75 spikes/sec. The amplitude of spontaneous potentials decreased from 46.9 to 37 mV, the threshold decreased by 18%, the duration of spontaneous spikes increased from 4.3 to 7.1 msec, and the latent period of responses to stimuli increased from 25.0 to 37.9 msec. In conditions of stimulation at 7–10 Hz, neurons generated spike activity at higher frequencies than in control conditions. Thus, our experiments showed that colchicine can inhibit the contractile activity of traumatized nerve cell processes, keeping the electrically excitable membrane in a satisfactory condition. It follows that attempts can be made in vivo to produce partial inhibition of nerve fiber contraction, thus preventing increases in neuron diastasis, which prevent surgical approximation to the point of contact and promote the development of massive scars at transection sites. Direct development and water dependence entail limited vagility in freshwater fauna. In these organisms, the population structure is probably linked to restrictions imposed by the habitat. In this study we investigate the relative contribution of processes stimulating the divergence of populations of Biomphalaria costata ( Biese, 1951) and Biomphalaria crequii ( Courty, 1907), two freshwater snails occurring in two contiguous and fragmented closed basins from the Andean Altiplano using mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) sequences, shell morphometric and radular morphology. In order to clarify the species boundaries, a third allopatric species was included: Biomphalaria aymara Valdovinos & Stuardo, 1991. Molecular analyses recovered two distinct clades: one composed of B. aymara from the Isluga swamps and B. costata from Spring 1 in Salar de Carcote, the single spring occupied by this species, and another integrated by snails from 12 springs spread across the Salar de Carcote and the Salar de Ascotán assigned to B. crequii, originally described from the Salar de Ascotán. Unlike shell morphometrics, radular morphology was informative for distinguishing these species. The division of the lineages occurred in the Late Pleistocene. A subclade that includes snails from the southernmost springs in Salar de Ascotán suggests fragmentation of the distribution of B. crequii associated with landscape discontinuities. In addition to microvicariance signals, the private haplotypes scattered around both salt spans show that close-range dispersal is a common biogeographic process in this species. The Himalayas are considered to constitute a biogeographical boundary between the Palaearctic and Oriental regions. However, this mountain range does not form a uniform barrier because several large river valleys deeply cut into the Himalayas, crossing drainage divides and potentially forming dispersal corridors, particularly for freshwater organisms. In the present study, the effectiveness of these corridors is tested for the first time based on molecular data, using the amphi-Himalayan freshwater gastropod genus Gyraulus as a model group. Based on a broad spatial sampling from the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, phylogenetic analyses were performed using mitochondrial DNA sequence data. The resulting phylogeny shows that northern and southern Himalayan clades are geographically distinct (i.e. they exclusively consist of either northern or southern specimens). This pattern suggests a lack of gene flow across the Himalayas probably at least since the late Pliocene/early Pleistocene. Successful dispersal and/or establishment of gastropods might have been impeded by geographical and ecological features. Instead of direct dispersal across the range, multiple colonizations of regions north and south of the Himalayas from extralimital areas have to be assumed. Animals should naturally select diets that provide the most benefit for the least cost. Many factors, however, can alter diet selection and may impact the ability to choose optimal diets. For example, dietary history may play a large role in how quickly an animal will switch to a novel and perhaps more optimal diet. The current study first aimed to evaluate diet quality using growth rate as a proxy in Planorbella trivolvis (Planorbidae) fed a range of common laboratory lettuce diets. Next, we sought to determine the extent to which diet acclimation influenced subsequent diet selection using the same laboratory lettuce diets. Snails fed cooked green romaine grew significantly more than snails fed cooked yellow romaine, uncooked green romaine or cooked kale. In a series of acclimation/selection experiments, snails naïve to all diets showed no selection, suggesting that prior experience with a diet item is necessary for rapid selection. When reared on a particular diet, however, snails showed a significant preference for that diet after a 5-d starvation period. Unexpectedly, we found that even snails reared on diets that yielded lower growth rates (e.g. uncooked lettuce) selected that same diet when also provided access to diets that were previously shown to yield higher growth rates. Diet acclimation clearly influenced subsequent dietary selection. Although Planorbidae are one the most common and diverse families of pulmonates, their mating behaviour is known only for a few species. This paper describes mating behaviour and copulatory mechanics in four species of the Planorbidae: Anisus vortex (Linnaeus, 1758), Bathyomphalus сontortus (Linnaeus, 1758), Choanomphalus riparius (Westerlund, 1865) and Planorbis planorbis (Linnaeus, 1758), and supplements previously published observations on two other species: Segmentina oelandica (Westerlund, 1885) and Planorbella (Seminolina) duryi (Wetherby, 1879). Patterns of musculature of the penial complex [in all species except P. (S.) duryi] were studied using fluorescent phalloidin dye specific for actin filaments. Choanomphalus riparius, P. planorbis and S. oelandica were shown to mate by shell mounting and display an elaborate courtship behaviour accompanied by shell-circling. Planorbella (S.) duryi mates in a face-to-face position; in this species, courtship is accompanied by mechanical stimulation of the partner's plicae. Anisus vortex and B. contortus do not exhibit any distinct precopulatory behaviour and mate face-to-face. It is argued that Planorbidae show a relationship between gender expression (functional protandry vs simultaneous hermaphroditism) and mating behaviour (unilateral vs reciprocal mating). Freshwater snails and environmental variables were studied at seven stations along the Banco River (Ivory Coast; West Africa) from March to October 2008. Two species (Physa marmorata (Physidae) and Bulinus forskalii (Planorbidae) were recorded only at one sampling site. This station which received domestic sewage from the neighbouring cities was characterized by the highest conductivity and pH and the lowest values of dissolved oxygen. Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that snail densities were probably influenced by conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and canopy cover. Also, snail dynamics showed a seasonal pattern, with peak population densities and recruitment of young generations during rainy periods. This study highlighted the impacts of sewage on snarl diversity and distribution in the Banco River. Overall, this paper strengthens the viewpoint that the Banco River management should be implemented to lessen the impact of anthropogenic activities on the ecology of the Banco National Park. The intestinal microbiota of animals play an important role in their energy metabolism and resistance to pathogens, and thus in maintenance of animals in their environment. We surveyed the intestinal microbiota of three species of Planorbidae (Gastropoda: Pulmonata). Cultivation-independent molecular methods were used to investigate the community composition of intestinal bacteria from individual snails: three Biomphalaria pfeifferi (Africa), two Bulinus africanus (Africa) and three Helisoma duryi (North America). PCR amplification and sequencing of 612 bacterial 16S rRNA genes yielded 282 unique DNA sequences (97% sequence similarity) among the eight individual snails sampled. The observed bacterial diversity was distributed over 18 phyla, with the greatest number of 16S rRNA gene sequences derived from the Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria. These results document the presence of highly diverse gut bacterial communities in three snail species and indicate the need for additional study to determine the roles that gut microbes play in the physiology and immunology of planorbid snails. Metriaclima lanisticola (a native cichlid of Lake Malawi) was studied under laboratory conditions to evaluate its potential as an agent for the biological control of schistosome intermediate host snails (i.e., Bulinus globosus, Bulinus nyassanus, and Bulinus tropicus). Crushing resistance of the three snail species was evaluated. M. lanisticola orally shelled snails of all species.
