This study investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on recent arts graduates from three universities in the United States. We present evidence of shifting definitions of adaptability, resilience, transformation, excellence, and success in arts training. Based on surveys and interviews, it reinforces findings from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP). The of experiences of recent arts and arts administration graduates affirms some current pedagogies and suggests others. We synthesize these findings to amplify some models, propose new ones, rebalance traditional outcomes toward a social mission, and consider the need for an expanded notion of excellence in the arts. Mid-infrared spectroscopy is one of the major analytical techniques employed for measurements of protein structure in solution. Traditional Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) measurement is limited by its blackbody light source that is inherently spatially incoherent and has low optical power output. This limitation is pronounced when working with proteins in aqueous solutions. Strong absorbance of water in protein amide I region 1600–1700 cm−1 restricts light path length to <10 μm and imposes significant experimental challenges in sample and flow cell handling. Emerging laser spectroscopic techniques use high-power coherent laser as light source that overcomes the limitation in FT-IR measurement. In this study, we employed an innovative infrared spectrometer that uses quantum cascade laser (QCL) as light source. Continuous infrared radiation from this laser source can be swiftly swept within the amide I region (1600–1700 cm−1) and amide II region (1500–1600 cm−1), which makes this technique ideal for protein secondary structure study. Protein solutions as low as 0.5 mg/mL were measured rapidly without any sample preparation. Infrared spectra of model proteins were thus collected, and a chemometric model based on partial least squares regression was developed to quantify α-helix and β-strand motifs in protein secondary structure. The model was applied to measurement of the native secondary structure of commercial therapeutic proteins and bovine serum albumin (BSA) and in thermal degradation studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We numerically study the algebraic properties of the Weyl tensor through the merger of two non-spinning black holes (BHs). We are particularly interested in the conjecture that for such a vacuum spacetime, which is zeroth-order algebraically general, a geometric horizon (GH), on which the spacetime is algebraically special and which is identified by the vanishing of a complex scalar invariant (), characterizes a smooth foliation independent surface (horizon) associated with the BH. In the first simulation we investigate the level-0 sets of (since) in the head-on collision of two unequal mass BHs. In the second simulation we shall investigate the level-ɛ sets of through a quasi-circular merger of two non-spinning, equal mass BHs. The numerical results, as displayed in the figures presented, provide evidence that a (unique) smooth GH can be identified throughout all stages of the binary BH merger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detroit's Black Bottom and Paradise Valley were African-American neighborhoods that housed a vibrant and active popular music scene between World War I and the 1960s. They were home to a dense network of music venues, many of which were owned or managed by African-Americans. Urban renewal projects during the late-1950s destroyed much of the heart of these places. Unfortunately, discussion of this activity is largely missing from the academic literature on placemaking, cultural entrepreneurship, and music scenes in Detroit. To address this gap, I propose a solution that marries discussion of these neighborhoods with a method to measure and compare entrepreneurial activity in a music scene using venue density as a construct. Purpose - "VTE Assess Prevent" is a unique communications campaign designed to educate and remind all front-line staff to risk assess inpatients for venous thromboembolism (VTE) (blood clots) and to provide those at risk with the recommended preventative treatment. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the VTE communications campaign from the perspective of the front line staff at a UK hospital. Design/methodology/approach - A questionnaire implementing both qualitative and quantitative methods was made available to all relevant frontline staff at the hospital via online and paper copies (n = 319). Findings - Overall positive attitudes towards the design and content of the campaign materials were reported. The campaign had a considerable impact on staff awareness of the importance of risk assessing for VTE and the extent to which risk assessments were carried out. High levels of reported behaviour change were reported as a consequence of the campaign. Recommendations for future communication campaigns included making the communication materials more memorable and enhancing the sense of control that people have over the procedure. Also, improving normative and outcome beliefs, running the communications campaign alongside a programme of education and including monitoring and feedback of performance were recommended. Originality/value - Reducing the number of deaths attributable to hospital acquired VTE is a clinical priority within the health services in many countries. The findings from this study highlight the role of the VTE campaign in achieving this goal, provide an insight into the key components of an effective communication campaign and identify recommendations for future campaigns. Their prevention and management has been the core of a tissue viability nurse's daily clinical and strategic workload. The important point to acknowledge is that not all PUs can be prevented but it is believed most of them can and all preventative measures must be implemented and evaluated. Initial efforts focused on establishing a baseline of incidence and prevalence. More recently, the Department of Health has proposed that PUs could be eliminated in 95% of all NHS patients and incentivised the measurement of PUs and other harms by use of the NHS Safety Thermometer through the introduction of a new initiative. A research company was commissioned to explore which communications interventions would be effective in helping health professionals to prevent and treat PUs.
