We report here the ability of adults to recognize the states of discomfort and comfort in babies aged three and six months by listening to their vocalizations. The acoustic characteristics of vocalizations significant for recognizing states from the characteristics of the baby's voice are described. Discomfort vocalizations were found to differ from babies' comfort signals in terms of the mean and maximum fundamental tone frequencies (FTF) and FTF values in the central and final parts of vocalizations. A mathematical model is presented and a function classifying signals as indicating discomfort or comfort is described. Babies' vocalizations attributed by adults to the comfort and discomfort categories with probabilities of 0.75 and above were very reliably recognized by the mathematical model based on the classification function. Objectives To evaluate changes in the mobility of the whole urethra, in the proximal urethra (funneling) and in the thickness of the urinary bladder wall, after a successful tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure. Methods This prospective longitudinal study included 52 women with urodynamically confirmed stress urinary incontinence who had undergone a successful TVT procedure. Ultrasound examination was performed before the TVT procedure and at a median of 3 (range, 3-6) months after surgery. For all women, the changes to the urethra and urinary bladder induced by surgery were examined. For three mobility groups (low, intermediate and high urethral mobility before surgery) we compared the changes induced by the operation and the typical position and mobility of the tape. Results The position of the urethra at rest was not influenced by surgery. The operation significantly decreased the mobility of all parts of the urethra during Valsalva. The absolute changes of the vector of the urethral movement differed according to the mobility group (average decrease, 6 ram; decrease for women with low, intermediate and high mobility, respectively, 2-3 ram, 4-6 mm and 9 ram). The change in relative mobility was the same in all groups. The operation decreased funneling (width and depth) during maximal Valsalva. After surgery there was an increase in the thickness of the bladder wall (by 0.64 and 0.73 ram, respectively, at the anterior part and trigone). Conclusions A successful TVT procedure did not influence the position of the urethra at rest but significantly decreased the mobility of the urethra during Valsalva and also decreased funneling at maximal Valsalva. A method based on micellar electrokinetic chromatography has been developed for the simultaneous separation of six anthocyanins (malvidin-3,5-diglucoside, malvidin-3-glucoside, malvidin-3-galactoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3,5-diglucoside, cyanidin-3-galactoside). Optimum selectivity was achieved in the buffer 30 mM phosphate + 400 mM borate-TRIS, pH=7.0 supported with 50 mM sodium dodecylsulphate. High content of borate was essential mainly for the separation of diastereomeric pair malvidin-3-glucoside-malvidin-3-galactoside. The calibration dependencies exhibit good linearity in the ranges of concentration 10–100 μg mL−1 for diglycosylated and 25–100 μg mL−1 for monoglycosylated derivatives (R2 = 0.9711−0.9989). The optimized method was applied to a sample of wine grape skin extract. Malvidin-3-glucoside was identified as main anthocyanin colorant in this sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
