In the case of any pathologies arising in the hard palate, it is always important to exclude their possible odontogenic origins. Cone-beam computed tomography is mandatory. In cases where a possible non-teeth-related pathology is confirmed, each clinician should remember possible differential diagnostics. Many small salivary glands between the mucosa and bone are present in this palatal area. Both benign and malignant tumors arising from the small glands, and mucosa of the hard palate, might occur. The case presented here mimics a solid tumor because of the nodule consistency. Because of a healthy palatal mucosa without any erosions or irritations with firm attachment to the submucosal nodule, a possible malignant tumor of small salivary gland origins was suspected in this case. When the tumor diameter is small, an excisional biopsy is required to collect good and representative material for further histopathological evaluation. In most cases, bulky nodules present on the palate are hard on palpation, non-movable, and covered with healthy mucosa. Possible bone infiltrations with mucous membrane ulcerations could manifest a more expansive character of the lesion. In the presented case, an unusual occurrence of a traumatic neuroma without any past traumatic etiology of the palate was first differentiated from the occurrence of adenoid-cystic carcinoma (ACC), pleomorphic adenoma, other benign/malignant small gland tumors, or atypical, fibroma/schwannoma of the palate. This paper presents treatment options for this rare oral neural tumor occurrence in the palate and differential diagnosis between hard palate tumors in a 42-year-old male patient, furthermore highlighting the role of an excisional biopsy as a good source for a tissue sample. Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is a rare cause of asymmetrical mandibular overgrowth because of the presence of an atypical growth in the affected condyle. SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography) can easily establish the presence of an atypical, prolonged growth exceeding far beyond normal condylar growth and activity. A CT, CBCT, or LDCT (computed tomography, cone-beam computed tomography, or low-dose computed tomography) can confirm the diagnosis by evaluating the scope of bone overgrowth, mandibular basis/ramus asymmetry, tendency to condylar head enlargement, changes in bone density, and occurrence of differences in condylar head shapes, size, and bone structure. In most cases, a condylectomy is the procedure of choice in growing cases of UCH to remove the pathological condyle and reduce asymmetry levels. Sometimes, the growth is very slow and progressive over time, causing slowly growing asymmetry with similar symptoms to any other mandibular asymmetry, and this causes some troublesome procedures in UCH diagnostics, resulting in patients being underdiagnosed; it can even lead to some relapses in mandibular asymmetry and skeletal malocclusion after previously performed orthodontic and surgical treatment of such discrepancies. When the source of asymmetry is not identified in time, possible inadequate treatment protocols can be used. If any relapse of facial and mandibular asymmetry re-occur, SPECT and CT evaluation are necessary to evaluate if condylar hyperplasia is present and to establish what kind of surgical intervention should be used in each case. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) remains the diagnostic modality of choice. The involvement of the cortical bone and adjacent teeth can be easily established via CBCT. Magnetic resonance can be helpful in the estimation of any other soft-tissue tumour spread within this anatomical area. The soft, hard-tissue, or mixed aetiology of tumours requires a differential diagnosis and accurate evaluation. If such pathologies arise, an adequate biopsy or incisional biopsy is essential to evaluate the type of tumour histopathologically. The occurrence of some neural tumours in the oral cavity is rare. Schwannomas (SCs), like some neuromas and other types of neural tumours, are rare and atypical. During clinical examination, a smooth, sponge-like, elastic mass could indicate other small salivary gland tumours rather than an oral neural tumour. Such pathologies of neural origins are quite rare and are uncommon findings in the oral cavity; therefore, their appearance may be conflated with other more typical benign or malignant tumours in the oral cavity. Establishing the status of bone via CBCT, the tooth involvement and the composition of the cortical bone may be helpful for establishing the best treatment of choice. Simple Summary: The work is the first comprehensive analysis of equine pathological changes from the Polish territory. The research material was collected from 20 archaeological sites, mainly early medieval settlements, such as strongholds, settlements, towns and horse graves. In the material examined, 186 cases of lesions were found. Of these, 26.9% were lesions of the spine, 39.8% lesions of the limb skeleton and 31.7% lesions of the head including dental pathologies. The work is the first comprehensive analysis of equine pathological changes from the Polish territory. The research material was collected from 20 archaeological sites, mainly early medieval settlements, such as strongholds, settlements, towns and horse graves. In the material examined, 186 cases of lesions were found. Of these, 26.9% were lesions of the spine, 39.8% lesions of the limb skeleton and 31.7% lesions of the head including dental pathologies. Most of the lesions in the limbs involved their distal segments. The vast majority of pathological cases can be linked to animal use. It was found that horses in which pathological lesions were observed were used under cover. In one case, the observed cranial trauma was the cause of death associated with injury to the nasal auricles and large vessels and consequent blood loss and possible shock. The buccal fat pad, also called the Bichat's fat pad (BFP), is an encapsulated fat mass located in the cheek. This type of specialized fat mass can be used both as a pedicular or free graft in various surgeries and approaches. Due to its easy access from the oral cavity approach, it is commonly used for oroantral and palatal fistula closure. The knowledge of its anatomy and surrounding tissues plays a role in its mobilization and suturing onto the desired defect in the palatal or maxillary region. The BFP is mostly associated with the primary approach used for a fistula or bone surgery. Alternatively, the procedure can be performed with a single approach incision, which does not compromise the appearance or the function of the operating or adjacent areas. The most important inclusion criteria for BFP usage and surgical limitations are highlighted. The BFP is used for multiple purposes in reconstructive and oncology surgery and also has its use in esthetic and facial contouring procedures. The amount, volume, and shape of the BFP are mostly associated with the scope of their usage. Introduction. The presence of bone septum in the maxillary sinus is one of the most common anatomical findings. So-called Underwood septa (US) are an atypical bone formation in the maxillary sinuses. Mostly they are quite easily found in CBCT studies and have major importance in sinus lift procedures in dental surgery. Furthermore, the shape, location, and size of the bony septa are important in each maxillary sinus surgery. Material and methods. A retrospective study of 120CBCT scans from the authors' own database was conducted. Results. Approximately 37.5% of each CBCT was associated with the occurrence of US, while just 25% had a full septum, and a total of only 14 patients had a half septa. More females have US, while healthy pneumatized maxillary sinus is most commonly found (82.22%). There is no correlation between the occurrence of silent sinus syndrome (p = 0.174), mucosal thickening (p = 0.325), or retention cyst formation (p = 0.272). Most sinuses are without any opacification in CBCT evaluation (91.11%), while other syndromes are not statistically relevant. Conclusions. It seems that the occurrence of Underwood septa is not statistically related to any clinical, radiological, or pathological condition within the sinus (p > 0.05). Introduction. Facial asymmetry might have many etiological factors. Most known and recognized factors are related to hemimandibular hyperplasia, elongation, condyle-related pathologies hemifacial microsomia, laterogenia, and others. In some cases, however, facial asymmetry has a different origin within the maxillary sinus (MS) bones. This rare entity as a silent sinus syndrome (SSS) causes secondary midfacial and maxillary asymmetry because of the retraction of the sinus walls. The authors present their own proposal for SSS/CMA (chronic maxillary atelectasia) classification and possible maxillary sinus disease alterations related to the scope of changes in the maxillary sinus walls, asymmetry, opacification, and related features. Material and Methods. The study consisted of 131 CBCT images which were evaluated. The authors focus on fourteen retrospective cone beam-computed tomography studies (CBCT) performed to establish and evaluate sources of facial asymmetry. Results. Neither presented maxillary and facial asymmetry cases correspond to the typical SSS/CMA findings. Asymptomatic maxillary sinusitis co-existing in maxillary asymmetry cases in patients suffering from skeletal malocclusion remains atypical for SSS pure and in-pure cases. The osteomeatal complex (OMC) patency is more common for pure forms. Conclusions. Computed tomography quite easily can identify the source of the problems in the maxillary sinus and identify SSS. Coexistent chronic rhinosinusitis might correspond with another MS pathology, CMA—chronic maxillary atelectasia. The scope and the degree of MS cause midfacial asymmetry; however, the scope of sinus opacification, osteomeatal complex drainage, and occurrence of other symptoms might be more or less present. The usage of xenograft material is widely used in almost all oral cavity bone defects for regenerative and reconstructive purposes. The presented xenograft usage in the following care report enabled good bone defect healing and enabled the preservation of affected premolars. It is quite common to use any possible variations of bone materials to ensure bone defect improved healing. In some cases, the scope of surgeries requires the removal of each cyst within close proximity to various nerves and vessels. The inferior alveolar, infraorbital, lingual, and mental nerves are those most commonly adjacent to most operating sites in jaw bones. The usage of some additional materials such as collagen sponges, bone substitutes, resorbable membranes, or other additional materials are useful in each bone defect reconstruction but should be handled with care, as described in the following case. Before planning their usage, it is important to perform each surgery with close cone beam computed tomography imaging, which is very helpful to establish the scope of each lesion and the proximity of vital structures. There are a lot of factors that might influence any possible nerve damage, especially the different nerve anatomical variations. Even factors including the subperiosteal preparation and compression of adjacent tissues might influence later nerve function. When the lesion is expanding through the buccal cortical plate and when soft tissue fluctuation is present, some special care is needed. Similar to the presented case, a limitation in crushing, blowing, or any irritation of nerve fibers improves later postoperative outcomes. When the wound and surrounding tissues are handled with care, a limited possibility of any damage or paresthesia can occur. When the nerve itself is damaged or cut, loss of function can be permanent. Immediately after or even prophylactic prescription 1–2 days before the surgery of Vitamin B with NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) (or other additional supplementary medicaments can improve nerve function in time. Possible nerve damage can be divided into many etiological factors. A quite different situation arises when the nerve is pulled in by the cyst growth into the cyst wall. The coronoidectomy approach is a known but still quite underestimated procedure focused on the removal of the coronoid process of the mandible. Most cases related to outer-joint-related factors causing limited mouth opening (LMO) might be related to a great variety of factors. Quite often, patients suffer a lot from the inability to fully open their mouths. During this time, they are scheduled for limitless conservative, pharmacological, and diagnostic steps to estimate the cause of LMO and increase patients' mouth opening. In those cases, a diagnostic coronoidectomy might be useful to estimate the potential cause of such a problem. On the other hand, a prophylactic coronoidectomy is still quite randomly described in the world literature and mostly selected for a limited number of special cases. Herein, we would like to present a special issue of the major trauma in the temporal bone, middle cranial fossa, and zygomatico-malar area that resulted in temporal muscle contusion, scarring, and later contraction. A hemicoronal approach was performed to stabilize the fractures of the left zygomatico-orbital area with titanium osteosynthesis plates and screws. Over time, the LMO increased. All temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-related pathologies have been excluded. In the second week, the post-op patient was only able to open his mouth at 12 mm. Temporal muscle injury over time caused major contractions, greatly influencing LMO. The following paper describes the influence of temporal muscle trauma on limited mouth opening and indications for simultaneously performing coronoidectomy during stable bone osteosynthesis. The following paper focuses on the topic of mandibular unilateral condyle hyperplasia (UCH). This form of mandibular asymmetry (MA) is one of the less common but still known pathologies that requires detailed surgical and orthodontic planning and treatment. Since this pathology is mostly related to a high number of individual dental, bone, and overgrowth factors, until now the treatment methods were individually driven. It seems that the scope of surgical intervention is greatly dependent on the degree of bone overgrowth and the occurrence of asymmetry. Many treatment modalities and possible surgical perspectives are known, yet, so far, no adequate detailed guidelines are known. This detailed review of this type of mandibular asymmetry will focus on diagnostics and treatment plans and outcomes. The following paper underlines the authors' own clinical experiences in MA and UCH treatment, which are compared with the literature review. There are many cysts and tumors which might occur in the mandibular and maxillary bones. Their origin can be either odontogenic or non-odontogenic. One of the most common odontogenic cysts is the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). Its nomenclature and classification have changed many times over years, from a tumor to, finally, a cyst. Nowadays, its treatment has not greatly changed, however, it is related to a potential recurrence rate more than any other cyst of odontogenic origins. OKC size, localization, and possible cortical expansion towards adjacent soft tissues might influence the scope of treatment and possible reoccurrence in time. Each case is quite individual, and after removal of the pathology in some cases there can be a necessity for either bone grafting or any other reconstruction method to restore proper bone continuity. The size and the placement of OKC might influence pathological fracture occurrence or inappropriate healing if the bone cavity after cyst removal is not properly treated. A good healing potential can be achieved with xenograft bone substitutes or allograft fresh–frozen bones. On rare occasions, a titanium plate is used to ensure mandibular stability. In the following case report, an atypical case of a large OKC treated with fresh–frozen bone grafts, supported with collagen barrier material in the anterior mandible with buccal cortical expansion, will be presented. The occurrence and manifestation of each ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is quite rare and uncommon. Mentioned odontogenic tumor classification had changed over the years; however, the treatment possibilities for this lesion remain the same. In most cases surgical enucleation is sufficient enough; however, bigger lesions might require bone curettage with sometimes performed bony ostectomy, which is a quite sufficient and effective method of treatment. In the presented case report, a panoramic radiological evaluation indicated an impacted molar tooth surrounded with mixed radiolucent/radiopaque areas. The 10-year-old Caucasian girl was scheduled for an incisional biopsy. The bone cavity in the mandible after tumor removal might be left for spontaneous healing or grafting techniques, depending on the shape and size of the defect. Nowadays, maxillo-facial surgery procedures are greatly dependent on good general anesthesia and adequate maintenance care of the airways. Nasotracheal intubation (NTI) is one of the most common ones, especially in orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint-related surgeries, or others. Nasotracheal intubation itself is not a problem; however, maintaining its stable and safe position, regardless of the excess of surgical maneuvers in the facial skeleton, is important. There are a lot of techniques, personal modifications, and materials used to support tube placement. It is quite common that either plaster or a bandage roll can be useful with a combination of various forms of sponges or wipes in different shapes, sizes, and elasticity to support the tube's adequate position, especially when maintaining a good shape and position of the nose and symmetry line and avoiding unnecessary tube flexion. Simple Summary: The military and prestigious importance of the horse as a cavalry mount (hussars and lancers) in post-medieval Poland has been well recorded in the pages of chronicles and historical records. However, information about the horse from Poland's earliest Slavic history (10th–13th century) is very modest and can be found in few written sources. Therefore, to change this state of knowledge, data from archaeozoological and archaeological research were used to complement the information from chronicles. This was undertaken as part of a project focusing on the early medieval period. This article presents issues related to the role of the horse in religious rituals. This is discussed through a presentation of older and current views resulting from new research. The article presents and discusses textual and archaeological data supported by archaeozoological sources. The horse is known to be a military, elite and magical animal but also as the source of meat for food and bones for the manufacture of items. Although there is no doubt of treatment of the horse as a magical animal among the Slavs in Poland, it is clear that this animal was not buried in cemeteries in separate graves or with riders, as seen amongst contemporary neighbouring tribes. Knowledge about horses from early medieval (10th–13th c.) Poland has been largely based on historical and archaeological data. Archaeozoological information has only been used to a limited extent. Therefore, this article aims to present the current state of knowledge on this subject, drawing on archaeozoological data from studies of horse bones. Apart from confirming earlier reflections regarding the sacred significance of the horse, additional information was obtained about specific individuals who were the subject of magical treatments. It turned out that sites with horse skeletons and skulls are few compared to the familiar presence of horse remains among kitchen waste. This contrasts with the neighbouring regions, where horses were buried more frequently among the Germans, Scandinavians and Prussians. Some new data have been obtained thanks to taphonomic analyses, which demonstrated that horse skulls of apotropaic status were not only exposed to public viewing but were also deposited under stronghold ramparts. Horses suffering from infectious diseases could also be buried under such ramparts. Considerations in the article lead to conclusions that horses were used in religious rituals as sacrificial animals, apotropaic deposits, as fortune-telling animals and cosmological figures. A lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is a rare finding. Patients diagnosed with LPC younger than 40 years of age are not that common. Mostly asymptomatic LPCs can be discovered on routine radiographs as an oval radiolucency between two mandibular premolar teeth roots and can vary in shape and size. Most cases are treated with enucleation, bone curettage, or a combination of both, greatly depending on the surgeon's preference. Because most LPCs are quite small, lesions do not require any regenerative procedures. In the presented case, because of cortical expansion of the lesion and loss of vital bone bridge surrounding two adjacent maxillary teeth, a guided bone regenerative procedure (GBR) with xenograft bone substitute was used. Despite that small lesions can heal on their own, nowadays the approach of full-mouth therapy (FMT), including direct soft or hard tissue reconstruction in the oral cavity, seems to be a wise treatment. Hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH) and elongation (HE) are the most common pathologies present in the mandible. Presented condylar hyperplasias have their own radiological and clinical features. In most cases, patients suffer from various forms of malocclusion. From a total of 150 asymmetrical jaw radiographs evaluated, 46 were evaluated and included in this study. A retrospective study on the data of 46 selected patients treated, diagnosed, and consulted from various forms of mandibular and skeletal asymmetry based on routine diagnostic panoramic radiographs evaluated typical and atypical radiological and anatomical symptoms of condylar hyperplasia. The presented evaluation focused on mandibular, maxillary, and other bones, in order to distinguish condylar hyperplasia from other forms of mandibular asymmetry. The degree of maxillary downward growth followed by the occurrence of an open bite on the affected side estimate the degree/presence or cessation of growth in the affected condyle. Mandibular asymmetry with incisor teeth inclination remains the most typical characteristic of condylar hyperplasia. Increased height of mandibular ramus differentiates between condylar hyperplasia and elongation, which also influences the position of the inferior alveolar nerve. Mentioned symptoms, described as the acronym "Go Moira!", are useful in a quick and simple "glimpse of an eye" differential diagnostic approach. It is possible to quickly and accurately establish the first diagnosis simply by a careful evaluation of patients' panoramic radiographs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study presents an analysis of a horse skeleton discovered in the timber and earth frame of the rampart surrounding the ducal stronghold in Gdańsk. The body of the animal was deposited sometime from the beginning of the 11th to the mid‐12th century. The male horse was aged 8–9 years old and had an estimated withers height of 128 cm (12.6 hands). The dentition and lesions on the skull suggest that the horse was used for riding. Two types of skeletal injuries are visible—the first resulted from the use of the horse and is visible on the skull, teeth, vertebrae, and limb bones. Such bone lesions are described in modern literature on equine medicine; therefore, their aetiology and clinical manifestation are described. The second group of injuries are lesions located in topographically distant areas: the skull, thoracic vertebrae, ribs, and limb bones. Their common feature is a proliferative periosteal reaction. Their aetiology cannot be definitely stated on the basis of the available material. They may be considered an effect of mechanical load‐bearing resulting from the excessive use of the horse but also may reflect a generalized infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The origin of the European bison ( Bison bonasus, Linnaeus, 1758) has been widely discussed and investigated in recent years. The species had a wide historic geographic distribution throughout the European continent during the middle and late Holocene, ranging from France in the west to the Caucasus in the east. However, archaeological evidence is needed to resolve the southern extent of the European bison distribution. We discovered one bison skull fragment during archaeological excavations in 2008 in the area of Yenikapı Metro and Marmaray (Turkey). Radiocarbon dating indicated the skull was deposited during the Byzantine period (seventh to eighth century AD). Mitochondrial genome analyses provided clear evidence that the skull was from a European bison. This is the first unambiguous evidence of the presence of this species in southeastern Europe during Byzantine times, which validates the historical written records of a potentially wider range of the European bison in historical times. These studies were carried out on 14 adult (9 males and 5 females) Equus przewalskii f. caballus (Linnaeus, 1758) horses, using both the skulls and mandibles. All of the material originated from 3 Polish archaeological sites that date back to the Early Medieval period. The most extensive craniometrical investigations consisted of 40 skull measurements and 16 mandible measurements. In some cases, the conditions of the artifacts narrowed the number of accessible osteometric points. The aim of this study was an estimation of the craniometric measurement differences and an examination of their statistical importance according to animal sex, age, and origin. A statistical insignificance of animal sex, age, and origin on the skull and mandible craniometry was found (P > 0.05) among the Early Middle Age skeletal horse remains from the 3 investigated sites. Moreover, numerous analogies were demonstrated in some craniometric measurement mean values compared with the cranial remains of other horses dating back to the Early and Late Middle Ages, and with horses having the exterior preserved primal features of their European ancestors: Poleskie horses and Polish Konik horses. The aim of study was evaluation of species horse's nematodes in three studs (different system of husbandry). It was analysed elementary parasites indices and checked efficacy of antyhelmintic threatments. Among 135 samples 41 % were infected by four species of nematodes: Strongyloides westerii, Trichostrongylus axei, Parascaris equorum, Dictyocaulus arnfieldi. Mean of faecal egg count was 160,5 EPG, range 100-900 EPG. The efficacy of Noromectin and Eqvest was very high - 100% whereas Abamitel Plus was 80%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Determining the age of an animal based on remains, especially fossil remains, is challenging. The age of an individual can be estimated from ultrastructural analyses of teeth. Therefore, in this study, an attempt was made to establish a relationship between the age of a rhinoceros and the ultrastructure of its tooth. The subject of these examinations was a tooth that originated from a female white rhinoceros that died at Kiev Zoo. The age of the female was known. She did not give birth during her life, so pregnancy did not influence the tooth ultrastructure. For ultrastructural examination, ground sections of the tooth were obtained and slides were observed under a light microscope in white light as well as in polarized light with the use of a lambda filter. In addition, gold-coated preparations were imaged in a scanning electron microscope. Three sections were cut out of the specimen: Horizontal through the tooth crown, horizontal through the upper part of the root, and longitudinal. In subsequent stages they were investigated to see the annual growth lines of mineralized dental tissues of cement and dentine. These lines were counted from the root canal center to the cheek surface of the tooth. The most satisfactory results were obtained on the horizontal section through the upper part of the root, where distinct growth lines were observed in the dentine, and their number for both roots was consistent with the known chronological age of the animal. The analyses were performed on a right third premolar (P3) of a white rhinoceros female (Ceratotherium simum, Burchell 1817). The specimen was born in captivity at London Zoo (Zoological Society of London), then in the 1970s transferred to Kiev Zoo (Peremohy Avenue), Ukraine, and was kept there until it died at a documented chronological age of 48 years. The female died because of its age, which indicates it was kept in good conditions adequate to the requirements of this species. Photographs and micrographs with radiological documentation were taken on the said tooth. Its structural characteristics were determined, and on the occlusal surface areas and points of anatomical constitution of its crown were identified. The tooth was also histologically evaluated via sections taken horizontally in a mesial-distal plane through the crown, horizontally in a mesial-distal plane through the coronal portion of the root, and longitudinally in a lingual-buccal plane through the crown and the root. Preparations with ground sections were made and observed in white, polarized, and reflected light. In the subsequent stage X-ray and SEM imaging has also been used, for analysis of the distribution of annual growth layers of mineralized dental tissues of cement and dentine, counted from the root canal center to the buccal surface. An attempt was also made to confirm the annual season in which the animal died, based on cement growth lines. It was observed that the growth lines were visible in all the analyzed sections, in dentine and cement. In the cement, the lines were relatively few and did not represent the attested age of the animal. The analysis of the coloration of the cement lines indicated that the animal was regularly fed a diet that was not seasonally differentiated. From the X-ray examination comes a conclusion that the animal did not suffer from periodontal diseases. Visible growth lines were observed on the dentine. On the horizontal section through the crown growth lines in the dentine were few and unclear. On the longitudinal section, both on the caudal and rostral roots, these lines were clearly visible and much more numerous than expected considering the known age of the animal, as more than 50 were counted. On horizontal sections through the upper part of both roots, distinct growth lines were observed in the dentine, and their number—48 for both roots—corresponded precisely to the age of the animal. The results of our study indicate that this method has significant potential for application to verify the age at death for modern and fossil representatives of rhinoceros. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
