Background: Preventing post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) in weaned piglets is a crucial challenge in the swine production industry. The stress of weaning, dietary shifts from maternal milk to solid feed, and environmental changes lead to decreased microbial diversity, increased pathogen abundance, and compromised intestinal integrity. We have previously identified Lactiplantibacillus argentoratensis AGMB00912 (LA) in healthy porcine feces, which demonstrated antimicrobial activity against pathogens and enhanced short-chain fatty acid production. This research aimed to evaluate the efficacy of LA strain supplementation as a strategy to inhibit PWD and enhance overall growth performance in weaned piglets. Results: LA supplementation in weaned piglets significantly increased body weight gain, average daily gain, and average daily feed intake. It also alleviated diarrhea symptoms (diarrhea score and incidence). Notably, LA was found to enrich beneficial microbial populations (Lactobacillus, Anaerobutyricum, Roseburia, Lachnospiraceae, and Blautia) while reducing the abundance of harmful bacteria (Helicobacter and Campylobacter). This not only reduces the direct impact of pathogens but also improves the overall gut microbiota structure, thus enhancing the resilience of weaned piglets. LA treatment also promotes the growth of the small intestinal epithelial structure, strengthens gut barrier integrity, and increases short-chain fatty acid levels in the gut. Conclusions: The study findings demonstrate the promising potential of LA in preventing PWD. Supplementation with the LA strain offers a promising feed additive for improving intestinal health and growth in piglets during the weaning transition, with the potential to significantly reduce the incidence and severity of PWD. Breast cancer remains a significant health concern, with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) being an aggressive subtype with poor prognosis. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is important in early-stage tumor to invasive malignancy progression. Snail, a central EMT component, is tightly regulated and may be subjected to proteasomal degradation. We report a novel proteasomal independent pathway involving chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) in Snail degradation, mediated via its cytosolic interaction with HSC70 and lysosomal targeting, which prevented its accumulation in luminal-type breast cancer cells. Conversely, Snail predominantly localized to the nucleus, thus evading CMA-mediated degradation in TNBC cells. Starvation-induced CMA activation downregulated Snail in TNBC cells by promoting cytoplasmic translocation. Evasion of CMA-mediated Snail degradation induced EMT, and enhanced metastatic potential of luminal-type breast cancer cells. Our findings elucidate a previously unrecognized role of CMA in Snail regulation, highlight its significance in breast cancer, and provide a potential therapeutic target for clinical interventions. Electrical cardioversion (ECV) a widely utilized intervention for persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) aimed at restoring sinus rhythm. However, ECV can be ineffective, raising questions about subsequent treatment options. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of non-ablation therapy versus ablation therapy following unsuccessful ECV. A total of 125 consecutive patients with persistent AF who underwent unsuccessful ECV between November 2017 and August 2023 was included in this retrospective analysis. Of these, 51.2% received only medical therapy (non-ablation therapy group, n = 64), while 48.8% underwent AF ablation (ablation therapy group, n = 61). Various ablation methods were employed, including catheter and thoracoscopic ablation. Ablation therapy was associated with significantly better AF-free survival compared to non-ablation therapy [hazard ratio (HR), 0.37; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.22–0.61; p < 0.01]. There was no difference of AF-free survival between catheter ablation and thoracoscopic ablation groups (HR 0.79, 95% CI 0.34–1.83; p = 0.58). AF duration > 5 year (HR 1.51; 95% CI 0.930–2.437; p = 0.10), BMI ≤ 25 kg/m2 (HR 1.61; 95% CI 1.004–2.581; p = 0.05) and diabetes (HR 2.38; 95% CI 0.902–6.266; p = 0.08) were considerable as predictor of AF recurrence. Background: The relationship between sinus node dysfunction and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been well known. The reversibility of sinus node dysfunction is indeed a critical factor in determining the treatment strategy in patients with tachycardia–bradycardia syndrome (TBS). We aimed to assess the clinical outcome of choosing catheter ablation as the initial treatment in tachycardia–bradycardia syndrome and predictive factors leading to the implantation of a permanent pacemaker (PPM) in these patients. Methods: Patients with TBS who had been taken AF catheter ablation from 2012 to 2021 were reviewed, and 113 patients were enrolled. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether a "sinus pause episode of more than 3 s unrelated to tachyarrhythmia" coexists (Group I, n = 20) or not (Group II, n = 93). Results: Compared to Group II, baseline characteristics showed that Group I was comprised of more female gender (p = 0.043), with hypertension (p = 0.033), and with enlarged left atrium (p = 0.003). An average three-year follow-up found that eight patients (8/113, 7%) were implanted PPM (5/20, 25% in Group I vs. 3/93, 3.2% in Group II, p = 0.001). Using a multivariate model, a "sinus pause episode unrelated to tachyarrhythmia" was strongly associated with PPM implantation after catheter ablation in patients with TBS (HR 6.765, 95% CI 1.355–33.763, p = 0.020). Only four out of 113 patients (3.5%) progressed to persistent or permanent AF. Conclusions: After catheter ablation as the initial treatment in TBS, only 7% underwent PPM implantation, and an isolated sinus pause was a predictive factor for requiring PPM implantation. In addition, even in patients who undergo catheter ablation with subsequent PPM implantation, we can expect to improve the clinical outcome associated with a reduced AF burden. Background: Patients achieving pathological complete response (pCR) post-neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and surgery for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have a favorable prognosis. However, recurrence occurs in approximately 20–30% of all patients, with few studies evaluating their prognostic factors. We identified these prognostic factors, including inflammation-based markers, in patients with ESCC showing pCR after nCRT and surgery. Patients and Methods: Patients with ESCC undergoing esophagectomy post-nCRT (January 2007–August 2017) were studied. Survival analysis evaluated 5-year overall (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Risk factors, including inflammation factors, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), were analyzed using Cox-proportional hazards model. Results: Overall, 123patients participated herein. After a median follow-up duration of 67 months (44–86 months), 17 patients (12.3%) had recurrent disease. The 5-year OS and RFS rates were 71.6% and 68.0%, respectively. In the multivariable analysis, older age (≥ 60 years) [hazard ratio (HR) 3.228, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.478–7.048, p = 0.003], higher pretreatment T stage (≥ T3; HR 2.563, 95% CI 1.335–4.922, p = 0.005), nonapplication of induction chemotherapy (HR 2.389, 95% CI 1.184–4.824, p = 0.015), and higher post-nCRT PLR (≥ 184.2; HR 2.896, 95% CI 1.547–5.420, p = 0.001) were poor independent prognostic factors for 5-year RFS. The patient group with three to four identified factors with poor outcomes exhibited a 5-year RFS rate of 46.2%. Conclusions: Significant prognostic factors include higher post-nCRT PLR, older age, higher clinical T stage, and nonapplication of induction chemotherapy. Background: Approximately half of the patients with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) receive subsequent lines of chemotherapy. Recently, the liposomal irinotecan (nal-IRI) plus 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (5-FU/LV) regimen is recommended as subsequent lines of chemotherapy. However, little is known about the predictive factors for the nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV regimen, especially in patients with previous irinotecan (IRI) exposure. Objectives: We investigated the predictive factors associated with nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV treatment in patients with PDAC. Design: Multicenter, retrospective cohort study. Methods: This study included patients with advanced PDAC who received the nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV regimen for palliative purposes. Results: Overall, 268 patients were treated with nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV. The median overall survival (OS) was 7.9 months (95% confidence interval (CI): 7.0–8.8), while the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 2.6 months (95% CI: 1.9–3.2). An albumin level of<4.0 g/dL, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) of ⩾3.5, liver or peritoneal metastasis, and a history of >3 lines of palliative chemotherapy were associated with worse OS. An NLR of ⩾3.5 and liver metastasis were significant predictive factors for worse PFS. Previous exposure to IRI was not a significant predictor. Patients without prior IRI (no-IRI) treatment showed relatively longer OS and PFS compared to IRI responders and nonresponders, but these differences were not significant when compared specifically to the responders (OS: 8.8 vs 8.1 months, p = 0.388; PFS: 3.6 vs 2.6 months, p = 0.126). Conclusion: An NLR of ⩾3.5 and liver metastasis were associated with worse PFS. Prior IRI exposure was not a significant predictive factor for OS and PFS, especially in IRI responders. In this study, the characteristics of ammonia and their effects on secondary particulate matter (PM) formation were analyzed by region in Korea in 2020. The NH3 concentration was high in GJ (11.4 ppb), a neighboring agricultural area, followed by DJ (9.0 ppb) and SE (8.6 ppb), which are located in urban areas. On the other hand, BI (2.6 ppb) and JI (4.5 ppb), which are background regions, demonstrated a lower concentration than other areas. Seasonally, ammonia was high in spring and summer, and it generally increased when human activities are active. Therefore, it is believed that the ammonia in the atmosphere not only changes depending on local emissions, but also based on temperature-dependent phase distribution characteristics. For SE and GJ, regions with relatively high ammonia concentrations, investigations into the effect of ammonia on secondary PM formation were conducted. In both regions, the ammonium-to-sulfate mole ratio tended to increase with increasing ammonia or PM2.5 concentration. It can be assumed that the PM2.5 concentration increases as nitrates are formed under the ammonia-sufficient condition. The adjusted gas ratio is generally greater than 4, indicating that there is a lot of free ammonia. Interfacial thermal resistance is crucial for determining the thermal conductivity of composites. Existing studies have explored hybrid filler systems and surface modification of alumina (Al2O3) particles for enhancing the thermal conductivities of polymer composites. In this study, highly acidic Al2O3 fillers were fabricated by modifying the raw Al2O3 surface using citric acid and glucose; the modified Al2O3 infiltrated an uncured epoxy adhesive at a concentration of 80 wt.%. The measured thermal conductivities of composites were up to 19.4% and 35.9% higher in glucose-filled and citric acid-filled Al2O3, respectively, compared with the raw Al2O3 at 25 °C. The experimental analysis and theoretical calculations revealed that the polar functionality on the surface facilitated hydrogen bonding between the filler and epoxy resin, which reduced the interfacial thermal resistance in the composite; this effect was the highest for the carboxyl group. To demonstrate the practical application of the modification technique, the exothermic performance test was conducted and indicated that a light-emitting diode lamp incorporating the citric acid filler-based composite exhibited excellent heat management performance compared to the raw Al2O3-applied composite. Background/Objectives: Limited data are available regarding the prognostic impact of premature ventricular complex (PVC) burden in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We sought to compare clinical outcomes in patients with AF according to PVC burden via 24 h Holter monitoring. Methods: From January 2010 to December 2020, 4834 oral anticoagulant (OAC)-naïve non-valvular AF (NVAF) patients who underwent 24 h Holter monitoring were included for analysis. Results: Among the 4834 OAC-naïve NVAF patients, 2835 patients (58.6%) exhibited at least one PVC within a 24 h monitoring period, and 120 patients (2.5%) displayed a daily PVC burden exceeding 10%. In the follow-up echocardiography, patients with a daily PVC burden of ≥10% exhibited lower left ventricular ejection fraction, larger left atrial volume, and higher right ventricular systolic pressure and E/e' than those with a daily PVC burden of <10%. The risk of ischemic stroke (adjusted HR 2.332, p = 0.015) and heart failure admission (adjusted HR 2.147, p = 0.010) were significantly higher in the patients with a daily PVC burden of ≥10% than in those with a daily PVC burden of <10%. However, the incidence of cardiac death was not significantly different between the two groups. A daily PVC burden of ≥10% was independently associated with the risk of ischemic stroke in the OAC-naïve NVAF patients, irrespective of the CHA2DS2–VASc score, AF type, and left atrial size. Conclusions: The current results suggest that evaluating and monitoring the burden of PVCs in patients with NVAF is an important aspect of predicting stroke and heart failure admission. OBJECTIVES Invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma exhibits distinct prognostic outcomes compared to non-mucinous adenocarcinoma (ADC). This study investigated and compared the clinical outcomes and prognostic factors of invasive mucinous and non-mucinous ADC patients. METHODS This retrospective study included patients who underwent curative surgery for ADC between 2011 and 2021. Patient characteristics were balanced using propensity score matching. Cumulative incidence was analysed to evaluate cancer recurrence incidence, and the Kaplan–Meier method was used to calculate overall survival (OS) for each group. RESULTS A total of 6101 patients were included. After matching, the non-mucinous group and mucinous groups comprised 798 and 408 patients, respectively. The patients in the mucinous group had a lower recurrence incidence than those in the non-mucinous group (P  = 0.014). The recurrence incidence in the mucinous group was between those of grades 1 (P  = 0.011) and 2 (P  = 0.012) and the OS rates were comparable to those of grades 2 (P  = 0.6) and 3 (P  = 0.2). Multivariable analysis revealed that the maximal standardized uptake value [hazard ratio (HR): 1.13, P  = 0.11] and progressed pathological stages (pStage II, HR: 3.9, P  = 0.028; pStage III, HR: 8.33, P  = 0.038) served as adverse prognostic factors for the mucinous group. CONCLUSIONS Patients with mucinous ADC demonstrated lower recurrence incidence and similar OS rates compared to those with non-mucinous ADC. The recurrence incidence of mucinous ADC was between those of International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer grades 1 and 2, with the OS rates comparable to those of grades 2 and 3. This study explores a symmetric configuration approach in anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis, focusing on overcoming adaptability challenges in dynamic conditions. Here, a rapid and mild synthesis technique for fabricating fibrous membrane‐type catalyst electrodes is developed. Our method leverages the contrasting oxidation states between the sulfur‐doped NiFe(OH)2 shell and the metallic Ni core, as revealed by electron energy loss spectroscopy. Theoretical evaluations confirm that the S–NiFe(OH)2 active sites optimize free energy for alkaline water electrolysis intermediates. This technique bypasses traditional energy‐intensive processes, achieving superior bifunctional activity beyond current benchmarks. The symmetric AEM water electrolyzer demonstrates a current density of 2 A cm−2 at 1.78 V at 60°C in 1 M KOH electrolyte and also sustains ampere‐scale water electrolysis below 2.0 V for 140 h even in ambient conditions. The larger ionic radius of potassium ions than that of lithium ions significantly limits the accomplishment of rapid diffusion kinetics in graphite electrodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), resulting in comparatively poor rate performance and cycle stability. Herein, we report a high-rate performance and cycling stability amorphous carbon electrode achieved through nitrogen and phosphorous co-doping. The as-prepared N, P co-doped carbon electrodes have distinct 3D structures with large surface areas, hierarchical pore architectures, and increased interlayer spaces resulting from the direct pyrolysis of supramolecular self-assembled aggregates without templates. The obtained electrode N3P1 exhibits a reversible specific capacity of 258 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A·g−1 and a good long-term cycle performance (96.1% capacity retention after 800 cycles at 0.5 A·g−1). Kinetic investigations show that the N3P1 electrode with the well-developed porous structure and large number of surface defects exhibits capacitive-driven behavior at all scan rates, which may be attributed by N and P co-doping. Ex-situ transmission electron microscopy analyses in the fully discharged and charged states demonstrate structural stability and reversibility owing to the expanded interlayer space. Frailty is a complex condition that intensifies with age and is marked by decreased physiological function. We rigorously investigated the effects of lower vitamin intake on frailty using data from 665 adults aged over 65 years who consumed sufficient recommended daily energy and protein intakes from the Korean Nutrition and Health Survey, 2016–2019. The definition of frailty was modified based on Fried et al.'s definition of weight loss, exhaustion, weakness, slowness, and low energy expenditure. Based on daily intake, we analyzed vitamins such as vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, and vitamin C. Our results of logistic regression showed that increasing multiple deficiencies in several kinds of vitamins (mild to moderate to severe) is not associated with frailty (odds ratio: 1, 1.24 (0.24–3.10), 0.82 (0.28–2.39), p for trend = 0.626) in older adults who consumed sufficient calories and proteins. A subgroup analysis of age and sex, which may interfere with the relationship between vitamin intake and frailty, showed that vitamin intake was not associated with frailty when sufficient energy and proteins were consumed. CNC machining is widely used in the manufacturing industry and can produce high-quality products in large quantities. However, defective products occur due to uncertain factors during machining, and monitoring the process to detect and control them early is essential. Furthermore, quality is an important monitoring indicator that can identify factors such as the condition of the process and the timing of tool replacement. Therefore, monitoring studies of CNC machining should consider quality as the monitoring indicator. In this study, we built a product manufacturing process using a CNC turning and acquired process signals and quality data through designed machining experiments. Based on the experimental data, a machine learning algorithm builds various models to identify quality-varying process signals. In addition, we develop a monitoring indicator that represents product quality using the identified signals. This research extracts the features that affect the quality in the frequency domain and validates the features. To investigate long-term outcomes and develop a risk model for pathological multi–station N2 (pN2b) in patients who underwent upfront surgery for clinical single–station N2 (cN2a) non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). From 2006 to 2018, 547 patients who had upfront surgery for suspected cN2a NSCLC underwent analysis. A risk model for predicting pN2b metastasis was developed using preoperative clinical variables via multivariable logistic analysis. Among 547 clinical cN2a NSCLC patients, 118 (21.6%), 58 (10.6%), and 371 (67.8%) had pN0, pN1, and pN2. Among 371 pN2 NSCLC patients, 77 (20.8%), 165 (44.5%), and 129 (34.7%) had pN2a1, pN2a2, and pN2b. The 5-year overall survival rates for pN2a1 and pN2a2 were significantly higher than for pN2b (p = 0.041). Histologic type (p < 0.001), age ≤ 50 years (p < 0.001), preoperatively confirmed N2 metastasis (p < 0.001), and clinical stage IIIB (vs. IIIA) (p = 0.003) were independent risk factors for pN2b metastasis. The risk scoring system based on this model demonstrated good discriminant ability for pN2b disease (area under receiver operating characteristic: 0.779). In cN2a NSCLC patients, those with multiple N2 metastases indicate worse prognosis than those with a single N2 metastasis. Our risk scoring system effectively predicts pN2b in these patients. Tylosin, an antibiotic with a long history in treating respiratory bacterial infections, has unknown effects on the gut microbiota of healthy and infected pigs. The study aimed to investigate the effect of a therapeutic dose of tylosin on swine gut microbiota and explored the relationship between this effect and tylosin pharmacokinetics (PK). We also assessed whether changes in gut microbiota after tylosin administration differ between healthy animals (n = 7) and animals intranasally co-infected (n = 7) with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Pasteurella multocida. Both groups were intramuscularly administered with tylosin (20 mg/kg). The 16S rRNA gene analyses revealed a significantly lower species richness and diversity, after tylosin treatment, in the infected than the healthy pigs, with infected pigs having lower levels of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and higher levels of Proteobacteria. Greater tylosin exposure (greater area under curve (AUC) and maximum plasma concentration (Cmax), and slower elimination (longer terminal half-life, T1/2) were observed in healthy than infected pigs. Relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Oscillibacter, Prevotella, and Sporobacter was positively and significantly correlated with AUC and Cmax, whereas the abundance of Acinetobacter, Alishewanella, and Pseudomonas was positively and significantly correlated with T1/2 and mean residence time (MRT) of tylosin. Our findings, for the first time, demonstrated significant changes in swine gut microbiota after a single therapeutic dose of tylosin was administered, whereas the effect of these changes on tylosin PK was not evident. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged as a global outbreak in 2019, profoundly affecting both human health and the global economy. Various vaccine modalities were developed and commercialized to overcome this challenge, including inactivated vaccines, mRNA vaccines, adenovirus vector-based vaccines, and subunit vaccines. While intramuscular vaccines induce high IgG levels, they often fail to stimulate significant mucosal immunity in the respiratory system. We employed the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vector expressing the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 Beta variant (rK148/beta-S), and evaluated the efficacy of intranasal vaccination with rK148/beta-S in K18-hACE2 transgenic mice. Intranasal vaccination with a low dose (106.0 EID50) resulted in an 86% survival rate after challenge with the SARS-CoV-2 Beta variant. Administration at a high dose (107.0 EID50) led to a reduction in lung viral load and 100% survival against the SARS-CoV-2 Beta and Delta variants. A high level of the SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific IgA was also induced in vaccinated mice lungs following the SARS-CoV-2 challenge. By selecting appropriate microhabitats, animals gain various benefits. For amphibians, which are ectothermic, appropriate microhabitat selection is directly related to their survival. This study aims to characterize the microhabitat type selected by Bufo gargarizans in South Korea, which has not yet been examined, using radiotelemetry. We analyzed the percent cover of different microhabitat features at sites where B. gargarizans was found. The microhabitat was categorized into eight types: stacked dry leaves litter or hay, grass, naked field, stones/pebbles, fallen branches, alive or dead trees/shrubs, wetland, and other. We collected a total of 60 location data, all of which had closed cover. From these, nine hibernation sites and six post-breeding dormancy sites were identified. Dry leaf litter was found to be the most frequently selected microhabitat type. We also found significant differences in microhabitat type between the hibernation period and the post-breeding dormancy period. Polyamide (PA) composites exhibit excellent properties such as stiffness, impact resistance, chemical resistance, and thermal stability, making them widely used in automotive interiors, engine parts, and bodywork. To leverage these advantages, high-content composite materials that enhance the wettability and interfacial adhesion between polyamide 66 (PA66) and glass fiber are essential. In this study, we synthesized linear and hyperbranched amide-based flow modifiers to improve the flowability of PA66 composites. H-NMR and FT-IR analyses confirmed the successful preparation of these structures. FT-IR analysis confirmed the successful synthesis of flow modifiers, showing characteristic amide peaks at 1650 cm−1 and the absence of -NH2 peaks at 3300 cm−1. Five flow modifiers were mixed with PA66 in various ratios using a micro-compounder, and viscosity reduction was confirmed by rotational rheometer measurements. Tensile strength and DMA indicated that PA66 composites with flow modifiers showed improved mechanical properties without significant reduction. Notably, PA66 composites with ACDA exhibited a superior viscosity reduction effect while maintaining mechanical strength. The DMA results indicated that the mechanical properties of PA66 composites with flow modifiers showed no significant reduction. The tensile strength of samples with flow modifiers ranged from 208 to 212 MPa, and the elongation at break was between 8.94 and 9.18%. Thermal regulators are devices that can adopt either the role of a thermal insulator or a thermal conductor, depending on the thermal input conditions, and play an increasingly important role in thermal management systems. In this study, we developed and tested a new passive thermal regulator design that operates around room temperature and achieves high switching ratios. Our regulator is structurally integer, scalable, orientation-independent, resistant to vibration, and can be easily integrated into existing thermal management solutions. The working principle of the passive regulator is simple yet effective, whereby an aluminum plug attached to a bimetallic strip enters and exists a wedge-shaped gap between two conductors. We demonstrate a switching ratio of ≈ 50 (- 8 + 34) :1 for a fully packaged prototype (≈ 320 (± 200):1 for a non-packaged regulator) operated in the open laboratory environment. Through geometric optimization using numerical simulations, we show that a switching ratio of ≈ 100 (- 15 + 18) :1 can be easily obtained, which can be further increased by increasing the cross-sectional area of the input conductor, hence increasing the ON-state heat transfer rate. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Lactiplantibacillus argentoratensis AGMB00912 (LA) in reducing Salmonella Typhimurium infection in weaned piglets. The investigation focused on the influence of LA on the gut microbiota composition, growth performance, and Salmonella fecal shedding. The results indicated that LA supplementation significantly improved average daily gain and reduced the prevalence and severity of diarrhea. Fecal analysis revealed reduced Salmonella shedding in the LA-supplemented group. Furthermore, LA notably altered the composition of the gut microbiota, increasing the levels of beneficial Bacillus and decreasing those of harmful Proteobacteria and Spirochaetes. Histopathological examination showed less intestinal damage in LA-treated piglets than in the controls. The study also observed that LA affected metabolic functions related to carbohydrate, amino acid, and fatty acid metabolism, thereby enhancing gut health and resilience against infection. Short-chain fatty acid concentrations in the feces were higher in the LA group, suggesting improved gut microbial activity. LA supplementation enriched the population of beneficial bacteria, including Streptococcus, Clostridium, and Bifidobacterium, while reducing the number of harmful bacteria, such as Escherichia and Campylobacter. Background: The prevalence of metastatic pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) is approximately 15%–20%. Although there are indicators to assess metastatic risks, none of them predict metastasis reliably. Therefore, we aimed to develop and validate a scoring system using clinical, genetic, and biochemical risk factors to preoperatively predict the metastatic risk of PPGL. Methods: In the cross‐sectional cohort (n = 180), clinical, genetic, and biochemical risk factors for metastasis were identified using multivariate logistic regression analysis, and a novel scoring system was developed. The scoring system was validated and compared with the age, size of tumor, extra‐adrenal location, and secretory type (ASES) score in the longitudinal cohort (n = 114). Results: In the cross‐sectional cohort, pseudohypoxia group‐related gene variants (SDHB, SDHD, or VHL), methoxytyramine >0.16 nmol/L, and tumor size >6.0 cm were independently associated with metastasis after multivariate logistic regression. Using them, the gene variant, methoxytyramine, and size of tumor (GMS) score were developed. In the longitudinal cohort, Harrell's concordance index of the GMS score (0.873, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.738–0.941) was higher than that of the ASES score (0.713, 95% CI: 0.567–0.814, p = 0.007). In the longitudinal cohort, a GMS score ≥2 was significantly associated with a higher risk of metastasis (hazard ratio = 25.07, 95% CI: 5.65–111.20). A GMS score ≥2 (p < 0.001), but not ASES score ≥2 (p = 0.090), was associated with shorter progression‐free survival. Conclusion: The GMS scoring system, which integrates gene variant, methoxytyramine level, and tumor size, provides a valuable preoperative approach to assess metastatic risk in PPGL. Problem definition: As related party transactions (RPTs) increase in global supply chains, understanding the impact of corporate governance on such transactions becomes crucial for businesses. RPTs often lead to operational diversion due to power disparities between parent and its subsidiaries. In this study, we explore how operational diversion in RPTs within multinational firms is affected by the roles of foreign subsidiaries and corporate governance mechanisms. Methodology/results: Using a unique data set on RPTs of Korean multinational firms from 2006 to 2013, we compare the performance of multinational firms engaging in RPTs with two types of foreign subsidiaries: vertical and horizontal. We conduct our empirical analysis based on the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Korea in 2011, which acts as a policy shock affecting corporate governance and deterring operational diversion. Our results show that the improvement in operational performance of a multinational firm following the IFRS adoption is more significant when the parent firm engages in transactions with vertical subsidiaries compared with horizontal ones. We further show that strong corporate governance mechanisms, such as internal governance, institutional ownership, and large shareholders, play a crucial role in restraining operational diversion in RPTs involving vertical subsidiaries. Managerial implications: The implications of our study extend to shareholders and auditors, highlighting the importance of prioritizing monitoring efforts concerning a parent firm's RPTs with vertical subsidiaries, especially when corporate governance mechanisms are weak. In contrast, RPTs with horizontal subsidiaries are relatively robust against operational diversion, making them a natural deterrent to such malpractices. Pyridine, an essential structure in drug development, shows a wide array of bioactivities according to its substitution patterns. Among the bioactive pyridines, meta-substituted pyridines suffer from limited synthetic approaches despite their significance. In this study, we present a condensation-based synthetic method enabling the facile incorporation of biologically relevant functional groups at the meta position of pyridine. This methodology unveiled the concealed reactivity of 3-formyl(aza)indoles as diformylmethane analogs for synthesizing dissymmetric di-meta-substituted pyridines without ortho and para substitutions. Furthermore, we uncovered resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding (RAHB) as the requirement for the in situ generation of enamines, the key intermediates of this transformation. Successful development of the designed methodology linked to wide applications—core remodeling of natural products, drug–natural product conjugation, late-stage functionalization of drug molecules, and synthesis of the regioisomeric CZC24832. Furthermore, we discovered anti-inflammatory agents through the functional evaluation of synthesized bi-heteroaryl analogs, signifying the utility of this methodology. While several markers have been identified, there remain challenges particularly in heterogeneous malignancies like adult soft tissue sarcomas, where conventional markers are inherently overexpressed. Here, we designed BODIPY scaffold fluorescence probes (BD‐IMC‐1, BD‐IMC‐2) that activate via disaggregation targeting for cyclooxygenase (COX), a potential marker for CSCs in sarcoma in clinical pathology. Based on their structures, BD‐IMC‐1 showcased higher susceptibility to disaggregation compared to BD‐IMC‐2, consistent with their selective interaction with COX. Notably, the BD‐IMC‐1 revealed positive cooperativity binding to COX‐2 at sub‐micromolar ranges. Both probes showed significant fluorescence turn‐on upon LPS or PMA triggered COX‐2 upregulation in live RAW264.7, HeLa, and human sarcoma cell line (Saos‐LM2) up to 2‐fold increase with negligible toxicity. We report a novel dual-band barrier infrared detector (DBIRD) design using InAs/GaSb type-II superlattices (T2SLs). The DBIRD structure consists of back-to-back barrier diodes: a "blue channel" (BC) diode which has an nBp architecture, an n-type layer of a larger bandgap for absorbing the blue band infrared/barrier/p-type layer, and a "red channel" (RC) diode which has a pBn architecture, a p-type layer of a smaller bandgap for absorbing the red band infrared/barrier/n-type layer. Each has a unipolar barrier using a T2SL lattice matched to a GaSb substrate to impede the flow of majority carriers from the absorbing layer. Each channel in the DBIRD can be independently accessed with a low bias voltage as is preferable for high-speed thermal imaging. The device modeling of DBIRDs and simulation results of the current–voltage characteristics under dark and illuminated conditions are also presented. They predict that the dual-band operation of the DBIRD will produce low dark currents and 45–56% quantum efficiencies for the in-band photons in the BC with λ c = 5.58 μm, and a nearly constant 32% in the RC with λ c = 8.05 μm. The spectral quantum efficiency of the BC for 500 K blackbody radiation is approximately 50% over the range of λ = 3–4.7 μm, while that of the RC has a peak of 42% at 5.9 μm. Grinding tools can be used for over 90% of their lifetime, but most practical production tools are replaced between 50 and 80%. Accurate tool condition monitoring, which can monitor the quality of grinding tools, can improve product quality and reduce costs. The transfer learning technique can solve the data distribution and data deficiency issues of deep learning methods, enabling precise tool condition prediction in a grinding system. However, selecting the optimal pre-trained model is crucial for enhancing transfer learning performance due to the relationship between the source and target domains and the negative transfer problem. To address this issue, an encoding metric-based model selection technique was developed that accurately reflects the time series similarity between the remaining useful life (RUL) of the grinding tool and the encoding value and features between the pre-trained model and target data. Encoding metrics that reflect the critical characteristics of transfer learning, such as the target label, data, and pre-trained model, were computed to assess the pre-trained models directly. The target RUL and the extracted encoding values from the target input data and pre-trained models were compared using measurements and correlation to evaluate how closely they matched. The encoding selection method demonstrated superiority over the current source selection criteria, with encoding-based root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error, and dynamic time warping showing a high association with the approach (over a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.66). Furthermore, the method was independent of the quantity and quality of the sources, making it robust for various datasets. The experimental dataset was used to validate the pre-trained model's encoding RMSE selection method, and the method was verified with a strong correlation (Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.79). In conclusion, the proposed encoding metric-based model selection technique can improve both the efficiency and intelligence of the machining process in terms of both quantity (exchange periods) and quality of grinding tools. To meet the increased demand for home workouts owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, this study proposes a new approach to real-time exercise posture classification based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) in an ensemble learning system. By utilizing MediaPipe, the proposed system extracts the joint coordinates and angles of the human body, which the CNN uses to learn the complex patterns of various exercises. Additionally, this new approach enhances classification performance by combining predictions from multiple image frames using an ensemble learning method. Infinity AI's Fitness Basic Dataset is employed for validation, and the experiments demonstrate high accuracy in classifying exercises such as arm raises, squats, and overhead presses. The proposed model demonstrated its ability to effectively classify exercise postures in real time, achieving high rates in accuracy (92.12%), precision (91.62%), recall (91.64%), and F1 score (91.58%). Background: Thymic cysts are a rare benign disease that needs to be distinguished from low-risk thymoma. [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique used in the differential diagnosis of thymic epithelial tumours, but its usefulness for thymic cysts remains unclear. Our study evaluated the utility of visual findings and quantitative parameters of [18F]FDG PET/CT for differentiating between thymic cysts and low-risk thymomas. Methods: Patients who underwent preoperative [18F]FDG PET/CT followed by thymectomy for a thymic mass were retrospectively analyzed. The visual [18F]FDG PET/CT findings evaluated were PET visual grade, PET central metabolic defect, and CT shape. The quantitative [18F]FDG PET/CT parameters evaluated were PET maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), CT diameter (cm), and CT attenuation in Hounsfield units (HU). Findings and parameters for differentiating thymic cysts from low-risk thymomas were assessed using Pearson's chi-square test, the Mann-Whitney U-test, and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis. Results: Seventy patients (18 thymic cysts and 52 low-risk thymomas) were finally included. Visual findings of PET visual grade (P < 0.001) and PET central metabolic defect (P < 0.001) showed significant differences between thymic cysts and low-risk thymomas, but CT shape did not. Among the quantitative parameters, PET SUVmax (P < 0.001), CT diameter (P < 0.001), and CT HU (P = 0.004) showed significant differences. In ROC analysis, PET SUVmax demonstrated the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.996 (P < 0.001), with a cut-off of equal to or less than 2.1 having a sensitivity of 100.0% and specificity of 94.2%. The AUC of PET SUVmax was significantly larger than that of CT diameter (P = 0.009) and CT HU (P = 0.004). Conclusions: Among the [18F]FDG PET/CT parameters examined, low FDG uptake (SUVmax ≤ 2.1, equal to or less than the mediastinum) is a strong diagnostic marker for a thymic cyst. Background and Objectives: Patella baja is a common complication after operative treatment for patellar fracture. This study aimed to investigate (1) the serial changes in patellar height and (2) the potential predictive factors for patellar height changes after tension band wiring (TBW) for patellar fractures. Materials and Methods: Forty-one patients who underwent TBW for patellar fracture between March 2019 and September 2022 were enrolled. To identify serial changes in patellar height, modified Blackburne–Peel index (mBPI) was assessed at just after surgery, at 3 months, at 6 months, at 1 year and at the final follow-up. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify factors correlated with mBPI difference between the contralateral side (considered as preoperative status) and injured side. Results: The postoperative mBPI exhibited a decline over time (mean mBPI immediately post operation/3 months/6 months/1 year/final follow-up: 0.69/0.63/0.63/0.62/0.61) Specifically, mBPI showed a significant reduction immediately post operation to 3 months (p < 0.001), although comparisons at other time points did not reveal significant differences. A lower position of the fracture was associated with a decrease in patellar height after surgery. Conclusions: Patellar height was mainly decreased from immediately post operation to 3 months. Interfacial magnetic interactions between different elements are the origin of various spin-transport phenomena in multi-elemental magnetic systems. We investigate the coupling between the magnetic moments of the rare-earth, transition-metal, and heavy-metal elements across the interface in a GdFeCo/Pt thin film, an archetype system to investigate ferrimagnetic spintronics. The Pt magnetic moments induced by the antiferromagnetically aligned FeCo and Gd moments are measured using element-resolved x-ray measurements. It is revealed that the proximity-induced Pt magnetic moments are always aligned parallel to the FeCo magnetic moments, even below the ferrimagnetic compensation temperature where FeCo has a smaller moment than Gd. This is understood by a theoretical model showing distinct effects of the rare-earth Gd 4f and transition-metal FeCo 3d magnetic moments on the Pt electronic states. In particular, the Gd and FeCo work in-phase to align the Pt moment in the same direction, despite their antiferromagnetic configuration. The unexpected additive roles of the two antiferromagnetically coupled elements exemplify the importance of detailed interactions among the constituent elements in understanding magnetic and spintronic properties of thin film systems. Chondrocyte differentiation is crucial for cartilage formation. However, the complex processes and mechanisms coordinating chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation remain incompletely understood. Here, we report a novel function of the adaptor protein Gulp1 in chondrocyte differentiation. Gulp1 expression is upregulated during chondrogenic differentiation. Gulp1 knockdown in chondrogenic ATDC5 cells reduces the expression of chondrogenic and hypertrophic marker genes during differentiation. Furthermore, Gulp1 knockdown impairs cell growth arrest during chondrocyte differentiation and reduces the expression of the cyclin‐dependent kinase inhibitor p21. The activation of the TGF‐β/SMAD2/3 pathway, which is associated with p21 expression in chondrocytes, is impaired in Gulp1 knockdown cells. Collectively, these results demonstrate that Gulp1 contributes to cell growth arrest and chondrocyte differentiation by modulating the TGF‐β/SMAD2/3 pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study retrospectively assessed radiographic outcomes and risk factors associated with non-union in femoral shaft fragmentary segmental fractures (AO/OTA 32C3) treated with reamed antegrade intra-medullary nailing. Radiological outcomes, including union and alignment, were evaluated. The risk factors for non-union were investigated, including demographics and treatment-related characteristics, such as the number of interlocking screws, segmentation length, main third fragment length, distance of the main third fragment, width ratio and exposed nail length in one cortex from immediate post-operative radiographs. Multivariate logistic regression was used for statistical analysis. Among 2295 femoral shaft fracture patients from three level-1 trauma centers, 51 met the inclusion criteria. The radiological union was achieved in 37 patients (73%) with a mean union time of 10.7 ± 4.8 months. The acceptable axial alignment was observed in 30 patients (59%). Multiple logistic regression analysis identified only exposed nail length as a significant risk factor for non-union (odds ratio: 1.599, p = 0.003) and the cut-off value was 19.1 mm (sensitivity, 0.786; specificity, 0.811). The study revealed high rates of non-union (27%) and malalignment (41%). Therefore, patients who underwent intramedullary nailing with an exposed nail length greater than 19.1 mm or about twice the nail diameter should be cautioned of the potential non-union. Interferon lambda (IFNλ), classified as a type III IFN, is a representative cytokine that plays an important role in innate immunity along with type I IFN. IFNλ can elicit antiviral states by inducing peculiar sets of IFN‐stimulated genes (ISGs). In this study, an adenoviral vector expression system with a tetracycline operator system was used to express human IFNλ4 in cells and mice. The formation of recombinant adenovirus (rAd‐huIFNλ4) was confirmed using immunohistochemistry assays and transmission electron microscopy. Its purity was verified by quantifying host cell DNA and host cell proteins, as well as by confirming the absence of the replication‐competent adenovirus. The transduction of rAd‐huIFNλ4 induced ISGs and inhibited four subtypes of the influenza virus in both mouse‐derived (LA‐4) and human‐derived cells (A549). The antiviral state was confirmed in BALB/c mice following intranasal inoculation with 109 PFU of rAd‐huIFNλ4, which led to the inhibition of four subtypes of the influenza virus in mouse lungs, with reduced inflammatory lesions. In patients with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), delayed wound healing is often observed. Timely and effective wound healing is a crucial determinant of a patient's quality of life, and novel materials for skin wound repair, such as bioactive peptides, are continuously being studied and developed. One such bioactive peptide, AESIS-1, has been studied for its well-established anti-rheumatoid arthritis properties. In this study, we attempted to use the anti-RA material AESIS-1 as a therapeutic wound-healing agent based on disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), which can help restore prompt wound healing. The efficacy of AESIS-1 in wound healing was assessed using a full-thickness excision model in diabetic mice; this is a well-established model for studying chronic wound repair. Initial observations revealed that mice treated with AESIS-1 exhibited significantly advanced wound repair compared with the control group. In vitro studies revealed that AESIS-1 increased the migration activity of human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) without affecting proliferative activity. Moreover, increased HDF cell migration is mediated by upregulating chemokine receptor expression, such as that of CXC chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2). The upregulation of CXCR2 through AESIS-1 treatment enhanced the chemotactic reactivity to CXCR2 ligands, including CXC motif ligand 8 (CXCL8). AESIS-1 directly activates the ERK and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascades, which regulate the migration and expression of CXCR2 in fibroblasts. Introduction: In secondary cleft lip and nasal deformity (CLND) correction, structural grafts are commonly used to control the nasal tip and restore the symmetry of the ala. However, the septal cartilage in Asians often weak and small. Biocompatible absorbable materials are alternatives to autologous grafts. This study assessed the surgical outcomes and complications of poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) plate grafts in secondary CLND correction. Methods: This study was retrospectively analyzed for patients who underwent secondary rhinoplasty for unilateral CLND correction between March 2015 and November 2020. Using open rhinoplasty, the PLGA plate was grafted as a columellar strut. Clinical photographs taken at the initial (T0) and follow-up visits (T1: short-term, T2: long-term) were analyzed and anthropometric parameters, such as nostril height and width, dome height, and tip height, were measured. Results: Twenty-four patients were included in this study. The mean T1 and T2 periods were 1.0 ± 0.4 and 15.5 ± 3.1 months, respectively. The nostril height ratio increased from 0.78 ± 0.12 at T0 to 0.88 ± 0.08 at T1 and 0.86 ± 0.09 at T2 (p < 0.001; Relapse ratio −2.6 ± 6.7%). The tip height ratio increased from 0.60 ± 0.07 (T0) to 0.66 ± 0.05 (T2) (Relapse ratio −3.7 ± 3.0%). Conclusions: The PLGA plate graft provided stable nasal tip projection and alar symmetry without major complications. Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, is a mixture of therapeutically active C1, C1a, C2 and other minor components. Despite its decades-long use in pigs and other species, its intramuscular (IM) pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PKs/PDs) are unknown in piglets. Furthermore, the PKs of many drugs differ between healthy and sick animals. Therefore, we investigated the PKs of gentamicin after a single IM dose (10 mg/kg) in healthy piglets and piglets that were intranasally co-infected with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Pasteurella multocida (PM). The plasma concentrations were measured using validated liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The gentamicin exposure was 36% lower based on the area under the plasma concentration–time curve and 16% lower based on the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) in the infected piglets compared to the healthy piglets, while it was eliminated faster (shorter half-life and larger clearance) in the infected piglets compared to the healthy piglets. The clearance and volume of distribution were the highest for the C1 component. C1, C1a and C2 accounted for 22–25%, 33–37% and 40–42% of the total gentamicin exposure, respectively. The PK/PD target for the efficacy of aminoglycosides (Cmax/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) > 10) could be exceeded for PM, with a greater magnitude in the healthy piglets. We suggest integrating this PK information with antibiotic susceptibility data for other bacteria to make informed antibiotic and dosage regimen selections against piglet infections.
