One of the biggest cases of prisoners (WBP) in correctional institutions throughout Indonesia is Narcotics Cases. The number of prisoners in Indonesia ranks 7th in the World after the United States, China, Brazil, India, Russia, and Turkey which is around 275,518 WBP. As the prison capacity can only accommodate 140,424 WBP so that the overcapacity experienced is around 96%, while other data shows more than 158,000 WBP as narcotics cases (60%). The same thing is also experienced by the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of South Sumatra with a total of 20 Technical Implementation Units (UPT) of Correctional Institutions (Lapas) and State Detention Centers (Rutan). At the South Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights regional office, there are two special narcotics prisons, namely the Banyuasin narcotics prison and the Muara Beliti narcotics prison. The Banyuasin narcotics prison is the closest to the capital of South Sumatra province, which has a capacity of 484 WBP and is filled with 851 WBP narcotics cases. With such large numbers, it is important to encourage and maximize the Revitalization of Correctional Administration program to optimize the guidance of prisoners based on their level of risk keeping in mind the principle of legal protection and respect for human rights based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. The Directorate General of Corrections made a breakthrough to optimize the guidance of prisoners by implementing the Correctional Implementation Revitalization policy stipulated in the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regulation Number 35 of 2018, concerning the correctional implementation revitalization policy which discusses the Determination of Super Maximum Security, Maximum Security, Medium Security, and Minimum Security Pilot Project Correctional Institutions. The application of the latest rules of Corrections, namely Law Number 22 of 2022 concerning corrections, where the correctional concept has an inseparable goal from an integrated criminal justice system organized by the government as part of the law enforcement process in the context of services as well as coaching and mentoring for social reintegration. It does not yet have a real model and concept and is felt by the community related to the Empowerment of Narcotics Case Prisoners in the context of realizing social reintegration. It can also be seen from the data in the South Sumatra Regional Office that there are more dealers than users, which is very funny and unreasonable if you think about it in a healthy and rational root of narcotics crime that has long survived and experienced an increasing trend; however, consumers or users are less than the market, namely sellers in terms of cases. Narcotics crimes that have high economic value, makes it difficult for people to find jobs or earn money further leading them to commit drug abuse crimes. For this reason, it cannot be underestimated related to the condition of community powerlessness, which is one of the factors for entering the realm of narcotics abuse. This then becomes a fundamental question in a society where the role of the Government lies in paying attention to and empowering prisoners to be independent. They should also be responsible for restoring the unity of life, living, and livelihood of prisoners where they are a generation of nations that must be saved by the state because their freedom of movement has been taken away by the State. It is important and urgent to gain the attention of the government regarding the empowerment of prisoners in the context to systematics, processes, models, harmonious and accountable concepts, synergy, and collaboration to achieve WBP goals so as not to repeat the crime of narcotics abuse; and can independently play an active role in the community environment and support the National development process. "Silent power, audible impunity" examines conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) against male detainees, in Abu Ghraib and in Camp Breadbasket, following the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the US–UK coalition. The article explores three contributing factors to the abuse: the impunity of the Western perpetrators, the justification of the abuse through "War on Terror" narratives, and the gender norms within the military. It argues that it is imperative to ensure accountability for crimes against humanity, to cultivate a minimally harmful political discourse, and to address the impact of gendered discussions surrounding CRSV. This essay examines the connections between documenta fifteen, an art exhibition in Germany, and the Tashkent Festival for Asian, African, and Latin American Films in Uzbekistan. It explores questions about the geographical scope, circulation of ethnographic images, self-organization, and research-based art. Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a global public health problem that particularly affects youth in prisons. Although there is a well-documented link between childhood maltreatment and NSSI, the underlying mechanisms connecting the two remain unclear. Based on Nock's integrated theoretical model of NSSI, the current study examined the association between childhood maltreatment and NSSI among younger Chinese prisoners and whether self-esteem mediates this association. A cross-sectional convenience sample of 1,040 participants was recruited from two prisons in central China. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire including information on childhood maltreatment, self-esteem, NSSI and demographic characteristics was administered for each participant. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to investigate the correlation between two variables. Bootstrapping procedures were employed to assess the mediating effect. NSSI was positively correlated with childhood maltreatment and negatively associated with self-esteem. The relationship between childhood maltreatment and NSSI was mediated by self-esteem, with 33.4% of the total effect of childhood maltreatment being explained. The ratio was higher in males (62.5%) than in females (14.4%), and it was higher in prisoners under 24 years old (37.5%) than in those over 24 years old (27.9%). These observations emphasize the importance of combining environmental and intrapersonal factors when assessing NSSI among prisoners, thereby contributing to its prevention and intervention in prisons. This study examines how military background of chief executive officers (CEOs) of private military and security companies (PMSCs) that intervened in Iraq from 2003 to 2019 affected the frequency with which companies committed human rights abuses. My findings show that PMSCs with CEOs who served in the military, for any regime type, are more likely to commit a high number of human rights abuses than companies led by CEOs without service experience. The risk is higher for PMSCs with CEOs who served in the Navy and lowest for CEOs with experience in the Air Force. The risk increases when ex-military CEOs lead private rather than publicly traded companies. The study contributes novel data on military service of CEOs for international PMSCs that were present in Iraq. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious health concern in prison populations. Most previous research in prisons has examined lifetime engagement in NSSI, but less is known about correlates and risk factors during imprisonment. Using Nock's integrated theoretical model as a conceptual framework, the present study tested the mediation effect of psychopathy and the moderation effect of cognitive reappraisal skills in the association between childhood maltreatment and NSSI in prisoners. A total of 1042 Chinese male prisoners anonymously completed measures of childhood maltreatment, psychopathy and cognitive reappraisal, and their NSSI was assessed through structured interviews. Regression based tests of the conceptual model showed that childhood maltreatment was significantly associated with NSSI in prisoners, and this association was mediated by psychopathy. Cognitive reappraisal moderated the relationship between psychopathy and NSSI. Specifically, the relationship between psychopathy and NSSI was significant for prisoners with low levels of cognitive reappraisal but non-significant for those with high levels of cognitive reappraisal. These findings highlight the need to consider environmental and intrapersonal factors simultaneously when evaluating risks associated with NSSI in prison populations, and can inform prevention and intervention programs in prison settings. Using the concept of social denial, this article puts the American Psychological Association's (APA's) pattern of willful blindness, identified by independent reviewer David Hoffman, in historical context by examining the contributions of Cold War social scientists to the CIA's KUBARK torture manual, and discusses the implications of this history for the reform of the APA's ethics policies. David Hoffman found that the leadership of the APA colluded with Department of Defense (DoD) to ensure that the APA's ethical policies were no stronger than those issued by the DoD. While the independent reviewer did not find evidence of collaboration between the CIA and the APA, this was not due to a lack of effort on the part of the APA, which was anxious to establish good relations and so promote the use of psychology in the national security arena. While Hoffman did not find that the APA knew that its collaborations would facilitate the development of abusive interrogation techniques, it showed a marked, motivated lack of interest in whether or not the DoD or CIA was abusing prisoners. The APA maintained its strategic ignorance even while engaging in a public relations campaign designed to give the impression that it was deeply concerned about multiple reports of psychologist involvement in a system of torture. The present study examines the relationship between legal status and prisoner misconduct by comparing official disciplinary infraction reports between documented, undocumented, and native-born inmates. We also examine the extent to which such effects vary across different types (i.e., criminal and non-criminal) of reported infractions. Using data from the Florida Department of Corrections, the results reveal that undocumented foreigners have a higher likelihood and a higher frequency of any misconduct and criminal misconduct as well as a higher frequency of non-criminal misconduct than the other two groups, while no such differences are found between documented and native-born prisoners. Policy-makers need the best available evidence to inform policy decisions during public health emergencies. We illustrate this in the context of temporary prisoner release decisions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We leverage parolee COVID-19 mortality rates in PA to show that prior estimates of the expected COVID-19 mortality rate for prisoners if released into the community, calculated from community rates, underestimate expected deaths by a factor of over 2.5. These results suggest a substantially smaller return to public health from temporary prisoner release programs than previously estimated and that, in some settings, such programs can increase COVID-19 risk. Recent years have witnessed significant increase in numbers of older men imprisoned in England and Wales; a phenomenon experienced across the western world. Those aged fifty and over represent the fastest-growing demographic group in prison in England and Wales. This article summaries explanations for and implications of this increase and the characteristics, needs and lived experiences of this population, before critically reflecting on current policy and practice responses; and how responses highlight definitional and policy ambiguities around older prisoners. The article discusses a multi-agency initiative developed at one prison in northern England that recognised the uniqueness of older prisoners, modified regimes and changed physical environments. Impact is benchmarked against Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons four tests of a healthy prison, followed by discussion of findings and implications for policy and practice. This article's aim is to discuss the relationship between the prisoner and the family during the deprivation of liberty of one of the conjugal partners. Thus, the article highlights the maintenance of the prisoner-family relationship during the execution of a custodial sentence of one of the conjugal partners. To maintain the above-mentioned relationship during the execution of the sentence, the prison resorts to a series of strategies to prevent the notion of family from disappearing and the family from dissolving. It often happens that this objective of the prison is not achieved, and the family breaks up because a spouse is deprived of liberty. In addition to maintaining the prisoner-family relationship, the penitentiary must prepare each person deprived of liberty for reintegration into society, which is why this aspect is critical within the total institution, the penitentiary. Therefore, this article is a reflection on the maintenance of the prisoner-family relationship and the reintegration of prisoners into society after serving a custodial sentence. An important empirical basis for the interpretations of Theodor W. Adorno, Else Frenkel-Brunswik, Daniel J. Levinson and R. Nevitt Sanford in The Authoritarian Personality (TAP) were questionnaires and in-depth interviews conducted by William R. Morrow with prisoners at California's San Quentin prison. A reconstruction of the historical approach exposes serious methodological shortcomings, some of which Morrow openly addressed in memoranda, revealing that the supposedly particularly authoritarian attitude of the prisoners was due, among other things, to their submission to the psychiatric authority in the authoritarian situation of the prison and due to the conditions of a hierarchical prisoner society. In TAP, the empirically inadequate survey was interpreted primarily in the context of psychoanalytic literature on crime at that time, in particular Robert Lindner's Rebel Without A Cause, whose theory of pseudo rebellion permeated TAP. Typologies of prison life in men's establishments have tended to emphasize the most desolate features of prison life such as aggression, violence, exploitation, and stark displays of individualism. Without seeking to contradict these positions, we suggest that competing narratives of care are also operating in male establishments in England and Wales. Through combining data from two recent, but separate, semi-ethnographic studies of prison life in two prisons (total n = 43), we present a completely different kind of typology based around Moore and Gillette's (1990) archetypes of masculinity, called: 'King', 'Warrior', 'Magician', and 'Lover'. This archetypal framework foregrounds the role of care in prison and the different manifestations of communal relations among prisoners. Building on recent developments in prison sociology that have explored the nexus between imprisonment, interpersonal relations and masculinity (see Crewe, 2014), this article argues that care is a fundamental feature of prison life that takes on a wide range of forms, including: paternal roles, intellectual expertise, information sharing and close physical bonds. This article, drawing from interviews, provides an examination of life after prison for two distinct groups returning from prison: people on parole and people exonerated of crimes. There is extensive research concerning people's experiences after prison; however, the post-prison trajectories of those who have been subsequently exonerated after being falsely convicted of crimes is a far less studied topic. Exonerees benefit after prison from social support arising from various sources such as their families and non-profit organizations. Social networks allow exonerees to be successful in the job market, as well as assist them financially. I find that with the help of dense social networks exonerees must perform their redemption in order to have their basic needs met. Redemption performances are labor that aim to prove that previously incarcerated individuals are worthy of assistance from society. The various negative social and economic consequences of prison are more notable for individuals on parole who are less likely than exonerees to be equipped with networks to draw on for their redemption performances. However, despite exonerees having more support during their return home, they, like individuals on parole, were also left feeling isolated, lost, and de-humanized. I show how resources and the brokering of stigma of incarceration leads to diverging outcomes for people returning from prison, but that trauma still remains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For decades, reintegration after prison for prisoners with interlinked welfare needs has presented one of the greatest challenges in the criminal justice system. The World Health Organization and the United Nations have highlighted the demand for well-functioning collaboration between professionals and welfare agencies handling these challenges. However, interprofessional collaboration has been an underdeveloped field of research and theory, especially concerning prisoners with substance abuse issues. The present study undertakes a scoping review of research on interprofessional collaboration in reintegration after prison for prisoners with substance abuse issues, particularly identifying factors that influence collaboration. Nineteen included studies from the USA, the UK, Australia, and Norway show that relational and structural factors influence collaboration and innovative projects are perceived as improving collaboration. A tentative conceptual model of factors that influence collaboration is presented, which may serve as a basis for reflection and further development of a theoretical framework within the field of research. A Liminal Church by Maria Chiara Rioli brings significant new historical information to the history of contemporary Palestine. Her central themes are the disruptions suffered by the Latin patriarchal diocese in Jerusalem following the war of 1948-49 and the efforts to reorganize this Church in Israel and Jordan. The chapters dedicated to the period 1946-1949 deal with the position of the Christian churches on partitioning Palestine, Catholic fears about the establishment of the State of Israel, the Arab reaction, Israel's occupation of Catholic properties, and accusations of Israeli desecration of Christian symbols. Of particular interest is the examination of the internal upheaval within the Latin patriarchal diocese of Jerusalem following the exodus of Palestine's Arab population as a result of Israeli military operations and forced expulsion. From 1950 to 1956, the Palestinian Latin Church faced a number of Israeli and Jordanian laws limiting the activities of the Christian communities. The author focuses as well on the symbolic phenomenon of a number of Jews married to Christians that began the controversial process of conversion to Christianity. The book also addresses Catholic anticommunism in Israel and Jordan and the attempts of the Latin and Greek Melkite churches to fight it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The case for using culturally relevant values in restorative justice programming for Australian Aboriginal prisoners: Western Australia is experiencing high rates of recidivism among Aboriginal offenders. This challenge can be partly addressed by delivering culturally relevant programming. Its dearth, however, suggests two questions: what is culturally fit in the context of the prison, and how might such programming be constructed? This article responds to these questions by focusing on one element of culture, 'values', that is influential ideas that determine desirable courses of action in a culture. Firstly, a review of the literature and comparative analysis is given to the respective key values of Aboriginal culture and European and Anglo-Australian cultures. It also highlights the importance of repairing Aboriginal values with implications for providing culturally relevant prison programming. Secondly, a report is given on how an in-prison Aboriginal restorative justice programme (AIPRJP) was co-designed by Noongar Elders and prisoners and me, an Anglo-Australian restorativist. Using an ethnographic approach, the project identified a set of Aboriginal values for addressing the harms resulting from historical manifestations of wrongdoing by settler colonialism and contemporary crimes of Aboriginal offenders. Purpose of the Review: The prevalence of mental and substance use disorders is three to five times higher than that of the general population. Psychosocial interventions are effective in identifying and managing mental health and substance use disorders. This article aims to review the randomized control studies which have used nonpharmacological interventions alone or in combination with pharmacological interventions for managing mental and substance use disorders in prison/correctional settings. Collection and Analysis of Data: Studies included were randomized control trials and pilot randomized studies that assessed the impact of psychosocial interventions for prisoners with mental disorders and substance use disorders. A comprehensive search for articles was done by the primary author (Sreekanth Nair Thekkumkara) in the following databases: PubMed, ProQuest, PsychArticles, and Google Scholar (search engine), for the period June 1, 2000, to December 31, 2020. Results and Conclusions: The 21 studies included in the review had a sample size of 34 to 759. The settings of all the interventions were the prison and different types of psychosocial interventions were provided across the studies. The average duration of intervention ranged between 10 min and 120 min with the frequency of one to six sessions per week for 1 to 36 months. All the 21 Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) were nonIndian studies. Overall, the results of the included studies showed significant improvement postintervention (motivational intervention, interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, positive psychology intervention, music therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy) on primary outcome measures such as symptom severity of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse prisoners. Positive effects were observed on secondary outcome measures such as motivation, aggression, follow up rates, and recidivism. A limited number of studies have focused on evaluating psychosocial interventions in prison settings. Within the criminal justice system, there is always a balancing act between two conflicting tenets: incarcerating the prisoners as a preventive measure, on the one hand, and, on the other, aiming to rehabilitate them. Without a proper transition, it is possible that prisoners will reoffend upon release. German legislation allows corrections officers to grant relaxed terms of imprisonment to prisoners who have proved themselves suitable. However, on June 7, 2018, corrections officers were essentially deprived of this power when the Regional Court of Limburg convicted two corrections officers of negligent killing after a prisoner, to whom they had granted relaxed terms of imprisonment, killed someone during one of his periods of release. In the immediate wake of this controversial judgment, corrections officers throughout Germany were seemingly left with two options: either to remain conscientious and attempt to rehabilitate the prisoners with the underlying risk of being subject to prosecution themselves, or to ensure their own "safety", thereby jeopardizing prisoners' crime-free futures. This article provides an overview regarding negligently committed offenses under German law, analyzes what led the trial court to this radical decision, and assesses why the final appeal court overruled the Regional Court's decision. This article explores the vulnerability of many UK female offenders and their experiences of domestic abuse that drives their criminality. Now that coercive control by domestic partners is more widely understood, criminal defences should take into account the impact it has upon domestic abuse victim/defendants. The Prison Reform Trust campaigned for the introduction of legal reform that would end convictions of people who committed crimes as a direct result of domestic abuse victimization. The reform has been considered during the debates on the 2021 Domestic Abuse Bill; however, the government rejected the proposal. Analysis of the extent to which higher social class (along with other demographic variables) was an advantage for Spanish prisoners at the Mauthausen concentration camp advances the study of the determinants of survival in contexts of indiscriminate violence. Use of Cox event-history models, based on detailed information collected by well-placed Spaniards at the camp, reveals that individuals from higher social classes who filled administrative positions at Mauthausen were prominent in support networks and had a good command of the German language were more likely to survive. This article treks through the timeworn remnants of Czechoslovakia's Communist forced and correctional labour uranium camps in the Ore Mountains in the northwest Bohemian region of Jáchymov. These camps held tens of thousands of detainees, largely political prisoners convicted in sham trials or individuals sent there for re-education. Conditions were deplorable. Throughout the 1950s, the young Czechoslovak Communist regime compelled detainees to hard, life threatening labour and subjected them to maltreatment and arbitrary violence. This article traces some of the visible, invisible or overgrown artefacts of the former camps, as well as public as private memories about what happened there. It reflects on the current memoryscape of these forgotten places of human suffering and describes the aesthetics of these aging sites of atrocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
