Global climatic and palaeogeographical changes generated a siliciclastic–carbonate system with high organic matter accumulations in a shallow sea during the lower Permian in Western Gondwana. The 60 m thick mixed siliciclastic–carbonate succession (Irati Formation and the base of the Serra Alta Formation) from the Paraná Basin represents a singular record of the interplay between carbonate production and siliciclastic input, providing a window of opportunity to integrate large‐scale depositional architecture with facies and geochemical analyses. The detailed study of cores supported by outcrop columnar sections revealed a siliciclastic‐dominated, retrogradational to aggradational facies, and a carbonate‐dominated, mixed aggradational to progradational facies composing three depositional sequences that record an outer‐ramp and mid to upper‐ramp. An integrated approach based on the description of facies and microfacies, organic geochemistry and mineralogical composition, indicated high‐frequency palaeoenvironmental changes during the evolution of this restricted basin. Climate changes, resulting in humid and dry phases, produced ideal conditions for high organic matter production and dolomite formation. The high organic matter production (humid phases) in addition to the restricted condition was responsible for the anoxic bottom waters that were widespread due to the low angle and homoclinal platform. Nutrient‐rich freshwater inflows in the anoxic and hypersaline restricted basin created a density‐stratified water column causing low‐salinity surface and anoxic bottom water, which allowed planktonic life, typical of lakes, such Botryococcus braunii, to flourish in the photic zone and sulphur bacteria to populate below the chemocline. Microbial activity induced primary dolomite precipitation (dry phases) and widespread formation of synsedimentary dolostone. Freshwater inflow and marine incursions are reflected in the organic matter accumulation (kerogen types I and II, respectively), generating bituminous shale with high total organic carbon (5 to 27 wt.%). Cap carbonates overlying Marinoan (635 Ma) glacial deposits worldwide record extreme paleoceanographic changes that may have triggered the rise of macroscopic life. However, the lack of geochronological constraints on these successions hinders reconciling climate and environmental change. Their upper part is marked by anomalous aragonite precipitation associated with large transgression and oxygenation of the post‐glacial ocean. Neomorphism of these deposits to low‐Mg calcite often includes centimetre‐scale seafloor crystal fans. We used in‐situ U–Pb dating and C and Sr isotopic analyses in the Puga cap carbonate to estimate the nature and timing of the neomorphism process. An age of 623 ± 3 [9] Ma (δ13C ~ −6‰ and 87Sr/87Sr ~ 0.7071–0.7075) for a blocky calcite cement is consistent with solution‐reprecipitation within the fans during final filling and diagenetic stabilization of the cap carbonate fabric. Sinusichnus Gibert 1996 is recorded for the first time in the Oligocene-Miocene Pirabas Formation of Northern Brazil. In these Oligocene-Miocene carbonate deposits, Sinusichnus sinuosus is characterized by horizontal, highly regular sinusoidal burrow systems with T- and H-shaped branching points. The main difference between the S. sinuosus described herein and other occurrences worldwide is the anomalous diameter of the burrows (4 to 10 cm). These trace fossils occur in organic matter-rich, wackestone/packstone and laminated mudstones interbedded with boundstones deposited in an inner carbonate platform paleoenvironment. The exceptional size of the studied S. sinuosus could have been associated to the producer's size, which may be attributed to construction by large crustaceans, similar to fossils found within the Pirabas Formation. ABSTRACT The middle Amazon River, between the confluences of the Negro and Madeira Rivers in Brazil, shows an anastomosing morphology with relatively stable, multiple interconnected channels that locally enclose floodbasins. Additionally, this system is characterized by sinuous secondary channels with meander development, discontinuous natural levees concentrated on the concave banks and extensively distributed scroll bars mainly in the islands, related to subrecent and present-day migration of mainly secondary channels. This distinguishes the Amazon from many other anastomosing rivers that have laterally stable, non-meandering channels. We analyzed sedimentary processes using field data, morphology and channel changes trough a temporal analysis using remote sensing data and obtained optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to understand the genesis of this large anastomosing river and the development of its meandering secondary channels. Scroll bars have developed in a multichannel river system at least since 7.5 ± 0.85 ka. Avulsion is inferred to have played a minor role in the formation of this anastomosing system, with only one documented case while mid-channel bar formation and chute cut-offs of the main and secondary channels are the main formative mechanisms of anastomosis in this system. Differences in resistance to erosion control the relatively straight main channel and allow secondary channels to develop a meandering platform. Vegetation contributes to the relative stability of islands and the floodplain. Low gradient and high average aggradation rate (1.1 mm yr−1) are conditions which favor the development of anastomosis. Additionally, stable external conditions, low abandonment rate of older channels and independence from high avulsion frequency suggest a long-lived, semi-static type of anastomosing river in this reach of the Amazon. The snowball Earth hypothesis postulates that the planet was entirely covered by ice for millions of years in the Neoproterozoic era, in a self-enhanced glaciation caused by the high albedo of the ice-covered planet. In a hard-snowball picture, the subsequent rapid unfreezing resulted from an ultra-greenhouse event attributed to the buildup of volcanic carbon dioxide (CO2) during glaciation. High partial pressures of atmospheric CO2 (; from 20,000 to 90,000?p.p.m.v.) in the aftermath of the Marinoan glaciation (?635?Myr ago) have been inferred from both boron and triple oxygen isotopes. These values are 50 to 225 times higher than present-day levels. Here, we re-evaluate these estimates using paired carbon isotopic data for carbonate layers that cap Neoproterozoic glacial deposits and are considered to record post-glacial sea level rise. The new data reported here for Brazilian cap carbonates, together with previous ones for time-equivalent units, provide estimates lower than 3,200?p.p.m.v.-and possibly as low as the current value of ?400?p.p.m.v. Our new constraint, and our re-interpretation of the boron and triple oxygen isotope data, provide a completely different picture of the late Neoproterozoic environment, with low atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and oxygen that are inconsistent with a hard-snowball Earth. Organic matter from the cap dolostones overlying the Marinoan-age glacigenic diamictites of the Araras Group, Amazon craton, has been studied to reconstruct the post-glacial ecosystem. Molecular fossils indicate that the post-Marinoan ecosystem was marked by an apparent decline in marine algal diversity. The proliferation of red algae may be explained by environmental changes, such as a massive nutrient input accompanying continental weathering after the ice thaw and a dimer light penetrating sea water due to the drowning of the platform. In addition, the presence of green sulphur bacteria indicates that sea water was stratified with an anoxic (possibly euxinic, i.e. sulphidic) layer at the water–sediment interface. Sulphur cycling probably occurred at the redox boundary as suggested by the recognition of active sulphate reduction.
