'Smart' bandages based on multimodal wearable devices could enable real-time physiological monitoring and active intervention to promote healing of chronic wounds. However, there has been limited development in incorporation of both sensors and stimulators for the current smart bandage technologies. Additionally, while adhesive electrodes are essential for robust signal transduction, detachment of existing adhesive dressings can lead to secondary damage to delicate wound tissues without switchable adhesion. Here we overcome these issues by developing a flexible bioelectronic system consisting of wirelessly powered, closed-loop sensing and stimulation circuits with skin-interfacing hydrogel electrodes capable of on-demand adhesion and detachment. In mice, we demonstrate that our wound care system can continuously monitor skin impedance and temperature and deliver electrical stimulation in response to the wound environment. Across preclinical wound models, the treatment group healed ~25% more rapidly and with ~50% enhancement in dermal remodeling compared with control. Further, we observed activation of proregenerative genes in monocyte and macrophage cell populations, which may enhance tissue regeneration, neovascularization and dermal recovery. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) utilize the phenomena of contact electrification and electrostatic induction to harvest mechanical energy from the environment. A good match between the motion frequency and the circuit characteristic frequency is critical for the effective power generation of a TENG. However, most TENGs have a time-dependent inherent capacitance (TIC-TENG), which hinders an optimal design for efficient energy conversion. Here, we propose a novel structure of a TENG with a constant inherent capacitance (CIC-TENG) and a mathematical model is established to provide analytical expressions of key output parameters of the device, which gives numerical simulation results that are in good agreement with the experimentally obtained results. Figures of merit and an optimization strategy are also given as guidelines for the optimization of material selection, geometry design, etc. Furthermore, a disk-formed CIC-TENG (DCIC-TENG) with polarity-switched triboelectric pairs is constructed to harvest unidirectional mechanical energy continuously, achieving an output power density of 55 mW/m2. The effects of the motion frequency, the number of electrodes and triboelectric pairs on the charge transfer efficiency of the DCIC-TENG are assessed and a preferred design strategy is given. Finally, the CIC-TENG demonstrates approximately two-fold advantages in power transfer efficiency over the TIC-TENG, and a DCIC-TENG-based self-powered anemometer was fabricated to measure wind speed in real time. Neurotransmitters play essential roles in regulating neural circuit dynamics both in the central nervous system as well as at the peripheral, including the gastrointestinal tract1–3. Their real-time monitoring will offer critical information for understanding neural function and diagnosing disease1–3. However, bioelectronic tools to monitor the dynamics of neurotransmitters in vivo, especially in the enteric nervous systems, are underdeveloped. This is mainly owing to the limited availability of biosensing tools that are capable of examining soft, complex and actively moving organs. Here we introduce a tissue-mimicking, stretchable, neurochemical biological interface termed NeuroString, which is prepared by laser patterning of a metal-complexed polyimide into an interconnected graphene/nanoparticle network embedded in an elastomer. NeuroString sensors allow chronic in vivo real-time, multichannel and multiplexed monoamine sensing in the brain of behaving mouse, as well as measuring serotonin dynamics in the gut without undesired stimulations and perturbing peristaltic movements. Next-generation light-emitting displays on skin should be soft, stretchable and bright1–7. Previously reported stretchable light-emitting devices were mostly based on inorganic nanomaterials, such as light-emitting capacitors, quantum dots or perovskites6–11. They either require high operating voltage or have limited stretchability and brightness, resolution or robustness under strain. On the other hand, intrinsically stretchable polymer materials hold the promise of good strain tolerance12,13. However, realizing high brightness remains a grand challenge for intrinsically stretchable light-emitting diodes. Here we report a material design strategy and fabrication processes to achieve stretchable all-polymer-based light-emitting diodes with high brightness (about 7,450 candela per square metre), current efficiency (about 5.3 candela per ampere) and stretchability (about 100 per cent strain). We fabricate stretchable all-polymer light-emitting diodes coloured red, green and blue, achieving both on-skin wireless powering and real-time displaying of pulse signals. Skin-like intrinsically stretchable soft electronic devices are essential to realize next-generation remote and preventative medicine for advanced personal healthcare1–4. The recent development of intrinsically stretchable conductors and semiconductors has enabled highly mechanically robust and skin-conformable electronic circuits or optoelectronic devices2,5–10. However, their operating frequencies have been limited to less than 100 hertz, which is much lower than that required for many applications. Here we report intrinsically stretchable diodes—based on stretchable organic and nanomaterials—capable of operating at a frequency as high as 13.56 megahertz. This operating frequency is high enough for the wireless operation of soft sensors and electrochromic display pixels using radiofrequency identification in which the base-carrier frequency is 6.78 megahertz or 13.56 megahertz. This was achieved through a combination of rational material design and device engineering. Specifically, we developed a stretchable anode, cathode, semiconductor and current collector that can satisfy the strict requirements for high-frequency operation. Finally, we show the operational feasibility of our diode by integrating it with a stretchable sensor, electrochromic display pixel and antenna to realize a stretchable wireless tag. Skin-like electronics that can adhere seamlessly to human skin or within the body are highly desirable for applications such as health monitoring, medical treatment, medical implants and biological studies, and for technologies that include human-machine interfaces, soft robotics and augmented reality. Rendering such electronics soft and stretchable-like human skin-would make them more comfortable to wear, and, through increased contact area, would greatly enhance the fidelity of signals acquired from the skin. Structural engineering of rigid inorganic and organic devices has enabled circuit-level stretchability, but this requires sophisticated fabrication techniques and usually suffers from reduced densities of devices within an array. We reasoned that the desired parameters, such as higher mechanical deformability and robustness, improved skin compatibility and higher device density, could be provided by using intrinsically stretchable polymer materials instead. However, the production of intrinsically stretchable materials and devices is still largely in its infancy: such materials have been reported, but functional, intrinsically stretchable electronics have yet to be demonstrated owing to the lack of a scalable fabrication technology. Here we describe a fabrication process that enables high yield and uniformity from a variety of intrinsically stretchable electronic polymers. We demonstrate an intrinsically stretchable polymer transistor array with an unprecedented device density of 347 transistors per square centimetre. The transistors have an average charge-carrier mobility comparable to that of amorphous silicon, varying only slightly (within one order of magnitude) when subjected to 100 per cent strain for 1,000 cycles, without current-voltage hysteresis. Our transistor arrays thus constitute intrinsically stretchable skin electronics, and include an active matrix for sensory arrays, as well as analogue and digital circuit elements. Our process offers a general platform for incorporating other intrinsically stretchable polymer materials, enabling the fabrication of next-generation stretchable skin electronic devices. In this study, the discharge voltage behavior of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) during high- g impact is studied both theoretically and experimentally. A micro-scale dynamic mechanism is proposed to describe the physical basis of the increase in the discharge voltage during a high- g impact. Based on this dynamic mechanism, a multi-field model is established, and the simulation and experimental studies of the discharge voltage increase phenomenon are conducted. From the simulation and experimental data, the relationship between the increased voltage and the high- g acceleration is revealed. An acceleration detection range of up to 10,000 g is verified. The design of the device is optimized by studying the influences of the parameters, such as the electrode thickness and discharge current, on the outputs. This work opens up new avenues for the development of autonomous sensor systems based on energy storage devices and is significant for many practical applications such as in collision testing and automobile safety. The development of wearable and large-area fabric energy harvester and sensor has received great attention due to their promising applications in next-generation autonomous and wearable healthcare technologies. Here, a new type of 'single' thread-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and its uses in elastically textile-based energy harvesting and sensing have been demonstrated. The energy-harvesting thread composed by one silicone-rubber-coated stainless-steel thread can extract energy during contact with skin. With sewing the energy-harvesting thread into a serpentine shape on an elastic textile, a highly stretchable and scalable TENG textile is realized to scavenge various kinds of human-motion energy. The collected energy is capable to sustainably power a commercial smart watch. Moreover, the simplified single triboelectric thread can be applied in a wide range of thread-based self-powered and active sensing uses, including gesture sensing, human-interactive interfaces, and human physiological signal monitoring. After integration with microcontrollers, more complicated systems, such as wireless wearable keyboards and smart beds, are demonstrated. These results show that the newly designed single-thread-based TENG, with the advantage of interactive, responsive, sewable, and conformal features, can meet application needs of a vast variety of fields, ranging from wearable and stretchable energy harvesters to smart cloth-based articles. Parasitic capacitance is an unavoidable and usually unwanted capacitance that exists in electric circuits, and it is the most important second-order non-ideal effect that must be considered while designing a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) because its magnitude is comparable to the magnitude of the TENG capacitance. This paper investigates the structure and performance optimization of TENGs through modeling and simulation, taking the parasitic capacitance into account. Parasitic capacitance is generally found to cause severe performance degradation in TENGs, and its effects on the optimum matching resistance, maximum output power, and structural figures-of-merit (FOMs) of TENGs are thoroughly investigated and discussed. Optimum values of important structural parameters such as the gap and electrode length are determined for the different working modes of TENGs, systematically demonstrating how these optimum structural parameters change as functions of the parasitic capacitance. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the parasitic capacitance can improve the height tolerance of the metal freestanding-mode TENGs. This work provides a theoretical foundation for the structure and performance optimization of TENGs for practical applications and promotes the development of mechanical energy-harvesting techniques. The process of charge transfer based on triboelectrification (TE) and contact electrification (CE) has been recently utilized as the basis for a new and promising energy harvesting technology, i.e., triboelectric nanogenerators, as well as selfpowered sensors and systems. The electrostatic charge transfer between two surfaces can occur in both the TE and the CE modes depending on the involvement of relative sliding friction. Does the sliding behavior in TE induce any fundamental difference in the charge transfer from the CE? Few studies are available on this comparison because of the challenges in ruling out the effect of the contact area using traditional macro-scale characterization methods. This paper provides the first study on the fundamental differences in CE and TE at the nanoscale based on scanning probe microscopic methods. A quantitative comparison of the two processes at equivalent contact time and force is provided, and the results suggest that the charge transfer from TE is much faster than that from CE, but the saturation value of the transferred charge density is the same. The measured frictional energy dissipation of ∼11 eV when the tip scans over distance of 1 Å sheds light on a potential mechanism: The friction may facilitate the charge transfer process via electronic excitation. These results provide fundamental guidance for the selection of materials and device structures to enable the TE or the CE in different applications; the CE mode is favorable for frequent moderate contact such as vibration energy harvesting and the TE mode is favorable for instant movement such as harvesting of energy from human walking. Water waves are increasingly regarded as a promising source for large-scale energy applications. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been recognized as one of the most promising approaches for harvesting wave energy. This work examines a freestanding, fully enclosed TENG that encloses a rolling ball inside a rocking spherical shell. Through the optimization of materials and structural parameters, a spherical TENG of 6 cm in diameter actuated by water waves can provide a peak current of 1 μA over a wide load range from a short-circuit condition to 10 GΩ, with an instantaneous output power of up to 10 mW. A multielectrode arrangement is also studied to improve the output of the TENG under random wave motions from all directions. Moreover, at a frequency of 1.43 Hz, the wave-driven TENG can directly drive tens of LEDs and charge a series of supercapacitors to rated voltage within several hours. The stored energy can power an electronic thermometer for 20 min. This rolling-structured TENG is extremely lightweight, has a simple structure, and is capable of rocking on or in water to harvest wave energy; it provides an innovative and effective approach toward large-scale blue energy harvesting of oceans and lakes. Human biomechanical energy is characterized by fluctuating amplitudes and variable low frequency, and an effective utilization of such energy cannot be achieved by classical energyharvesting technologies. Here we report a high-efficient self-charging power system for sustainable operation of mobile electronics exploiting exclusively human biomechanical energy, which consists of a high-output triboelectric nanogenerator, a power management circuit to convert the random a.c. energy to d.c. electricity at 60% efficiency, and an energy storage device. With palm tapping as the only energy source, this power unit provides a continuous d.c. electricity of 1.044mW (7.34Wm ― 3) in a regulated and managed manner. This self-charging unit can be universally applied as a standard ‘infinite-lifetime’ power source for continuously driving numerous conventional electronics, such as thermometers, electrocardiograph system, pedometers, wearable watches, scientific calculators and wireless radio-frequency communication system, which indicates the immediate and broad applications in personal sensor systems and internet of things. A stretchable-rubber-based (SR-based) triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is developed that can not only harvest energy but also serve as self-powered multifunctional sensors. It consists of a layer of elastic rubber and a layer of aluminum film that acts as the electrode. By stretching and releasing the rubber, the changes of triboelectric charge distribution/density on the rubber surface relative to the aluminum surface induce alterations to the electrical potential of the aluminum electrode, leading to an alternating charge flow between the aluminum electrode and the ground. The unique working principle of the SR-based TENG is verified by the coupling of numerical calculations and experimental measurements. A comprehensive study is carried out to investigate the factors that may influence the output performance of the SR-based TENG. By integrating the devices into a sensor system, it is capable of detecting movements in different directions. Moreover, the SR-based TENG can be attached to a human body to detect diaphragm breathing and joint motion. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology has emerged as a new mechanical energy harvesting technology with numerous advantages. This paper analyzes its charging behavior together with a load capacitor. Through numerical and analytical modeling, the charging performance of a TENG with a bridge rectifier under periodic external mechanical motion is completely analogous to that of a dc voltage source in series with an internal resistance. An optimum load capacitance that matches the TENGs impedance is observed for the maximum stored energy. This optimum load capacitance is theoretically detected to be linearly proportional to the charging cycle numbers and the inherent TENG capacitance. Motion tracking is of great importance in a wide range of fields such as automation, robotics, security, sports and entertainment. Here, a self-powered, single-electrode-based triboelectric sensor (TES) is reported to accurately detect the movement of a moving object/body in two dimensions. Based on the coupling of triboelectric effect and electrostatic induction, the movement of an object on the top surface of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) layer induces changes in the electrical potential of the patterned aluminum electrodes underneath. From the measurements of the output performance (open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current), the motion information about the object, such as trajectory, velocity, and acceleration is derived in conformity with the preset values. Moreover, the TES can detect motions of more than one objects moving at the same time. In addition, applications of the TES are demonstrated by using LED illuminations as real-time indicators to visualize the movement of a sliding object and the walking steps of a person. The piezoelectric characteristics of nanowires, thin films and bulk crystals have been closely studied for potential applications in sensors, transducers, energy conversion and electronics. With their high crystallinity and ability to withstand enormous strain, two-dimensional materials are of great interest as high-performance piezoelectric materials. Monolayer MoS2 is predicted to be strongly piezoelectric, an effect that disappears in the bulk owing to the opposite orientations of adjacent atomic layers. Here we report the first experimental study of the piezoelectric properties of two-dimensional MoS2 and show that cyclic stretching and releasing of thin MoS2 flakes with an odd number of atomic layers produces oscillating piezoelectric voltage and current outputs, whereas no output is observed for flakes with an even number of layers. A single monolayer flake strained by 0.53% generates a peak output of 15 mV and 20 pA, corresponding to a power density of 2 mW m−2 and a 5.08% mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the output increases with decreasing thickness and reverses sign when the strain direction is rotated by 90°. Transport measurements show a strong piezotronic effect in single-layer MoS2, but not in bilayer and bulk MoS2. The coupling between piezoelectricity and semiconducting properties in two-dimensional nanomaterials may enable the development of applications in powering nanodevices, adaptive bioprobes and tunable/stretchable electronics/optoelectronics.
