The authors implanted P atoms at 50 and 140-keV energies with respective fluences of 1 × 10 14 and 2 × 10 14 /cm 2 into diamond thin films synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on the type-Ib diamond substrate formed by high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The occupational sites of implanted P atoms were determined in each processing stage of P implantation, ion-beam-induced epitaxial crystallization (IBIEC) annealing by 3-MeV-Ne 2 + ion irradiation at 750 ° C, and thermal annealing at 850 ° C in vacuum, by quantitatively comparing the random and channeling yields in Rutherford backscattering (RBS) measurements. In the analysis of RBS spectra, simulated distributions were fitted to the experimentally obtained spectra and we quantitatively identified the occupational sites and ratio of implanted P atoms. In addition, we investigated the diffusion phenomenon of implanted P atoms during annealing processes from the depth profile of scattered He ions. Consequently, the averaged occupational ratio in the substitutional lattice site was stably recorded around 50%. From the depth profile in the RBS spectra, thermal diffusion of implanted P atoms was clearly observed during the last thermal annealing after MeV-IBIEC annealing. We finally discuss the potentials of the MeV-IBIEC irradiation at relatively low temperatures applying to useful and credible annealing methods for electrical activation as well as recovery of damaged crystallinity. GaN caps are commonly used to reduce sheet charge modulation induced by AlGaN/GaN surface potential. However, the details on how GaN caps affect C – V and G – V characteristics are still unclear. In this paper, we report a difference between these characteristics with and without GaN caps, and we discovered a mechanism in which GaN caps act as quantum wells to affect the charging and discharging of interface states. Background: Despite recent reports, the effectiveness of postoperative oral nutritional supplementation (ONS) on body weight loss and malnutrition after gastrectomy remains controversial. We aimed to elucidate the effectiveness of ONS especially in octogenarian patients undergoing oncological gastrectomy. Methods: A total of 286 consecutive patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer were eligible. Postoperative body weight loss, malnutrition, and sarcopenia were compared between patients with and without postoperative ONS among octogenarian patients aged ≥ 80 years and non-octogenarian patients aged < 80 years. Results: In this study, 36 (62.1%) octogenarian and 121 (53.1%) non-octogenarian patients continued postoperative ONS for three months. The clinicopathologic characteristics were not different between the ONS (−) and ONS (+) groups among the octogenarian and non-octogenarian patients. The changes in body weight and serum albumin levels at postoperative 1 year were different between the ONS (−) and ONS (+) groups (P = 0.03 and P = 0.04, respectively) among the octogenarian patients, but not between the two groups among the non-octogenarian patients (P = 0.99 and P = 0.29, respectively). Also, the decline in psoas muscle mass index at postoperative 6 months and 1 year was significantly lower in the ONS (+) group than in the ONS (−) group (P < 0.01 and P < 0.01, respectively). In addition, similar results were found in octogenarian patients who underwent distal gastrectomy. Conclusions: Postoperative ONS could prevent body weight loss, malnutrition, and sarcopenia especially in octogenarian patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is characterized by intestinal ischemia caused by spasms in the peripheral intestinal vessels without organic obstruction in the main mesenteric vessels. NOMI can be fatal in case of delayed diagnosis and treatment. Although the use of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence in assessing intestinal viability during NOMI surgery is well recognized, there is a paucity of reported cases using this technique. Herein, we present a case of NOMI that was successfully managed through accurate diagnosis and resection of the ischemic intestines guided by ICG fluorescence. Case presentation: An 81-year-old man presented with abdominal pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed intrahepatic portal vein gas, superior mesenteric vein gas, and terminal ileal edema. Considering these findings, the patient was diagnosed with NOMI and emergency surgery was performed. Intestinal edema was observed 30 cm upstream of the terminal ileum without serosal discoloration. ICG fluorescence revealed areas of normal perfusion as well as mild and moderate hypoperfusion. The small bowel, including the hypoperfusion area, was resected. As no clinical signs of residual bowel ischemia were observed during the postoperative course, a second-look operation was deemed unnecessary. Intraoperative ICG fluorescence and histopathological findings indicated mucosal edema in the mildly hypoperfused area and mucosal necrosis in the moderately hypoperfused area. Conclusions: This case highlights the use of intraoperative ICG fluorescence in the disease. ICG fluorescence is invaluable in assessing the extent of bowel ischemia and guiding precise resection. Thus, future efforts should focus on identifying accumulation of cases and quantification of ICG fluorescence intensity to further improve diagnostic performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maintaining eye contact is a fundamental aspect of non-verbal communication, yet current remote communication tools, such as video calls, struggle to replicate the natural eye contact experienced in face-to-face interactions. This study presents a cutting-edge vision-sharing system for android avatars that enables remote eye contact by synchronizing the eye movements of the operator and the avatar. Our innovative system features an eyeball integrated with a wide-angle lens camera, meticulously designed to mimic human eyes in both appearance and functionality. This technology is seamlessly integrated into android avatars, enabling operators to perceive the avatar's surroundings as if physically present. It provides a stable and immersive visual experience through a head-mounted display synchronized with the avatar's gaze direction. Through rigorous experimental evaluations, we demonstrated the system's ability to faithfully replicate the operator's perspective through the avatar, making eye contact more intuitive and effortless compared with conventional methods. Subjective assessments further validated the system's capacity to reduce operational workload and enhance user experience. To assess the hemodynamics of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), we measured the intraventricular pressure difference (IVPD), a sensitive marker of myocardial diastolic function, using fetal echocardiography. We included 28 monochorionic diamniotic (MD) twins diagnosed with TTTS who underwent fetoscopic laser photocoagulation (FLP) between 2018 and 2022. Color M-mode Doppler images of both cardiac ventricles were obtained before and after FLP. According to this evaluation, the IVPDs were divided into three groups; those with total, basal, and mid-apical IVPD. Of the 28 twins, 21 were available for analysis (including eight, eight, three, and two cases in stages Quintero Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲd, and Ⅲr, respectively). Comparing the pre and postFLP results, significant increases in total and mid-apical IVPD in the left ventricle (LV) of recipient twins were noted (total and mid-apical IVPD: p=0.026 and 0.013, respectively). In the LV of the donor twins, all IVPDs were significantly increased after FLP (total, basal, and mid-apical IVPD: p=0.003, 0.001, and 0.022, respectively). In addition, comparisons between the donor and recipient groups did not show significant differences in either ventricle before FLP. IVPD detected subtle hemodynamics changes, such as volume overload and diastolic dysfunction in TTTS before and after FLP. Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a neurodegenerative disorder represented by eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions (EIIs) and GGC/CGG repeat expansion in the NOTCH2NLC gene. We report here two adult cases of NIID, genetically confirmed, with manifestation of encephalopathy‐like symptoms and address the histopathologic findings obtained by brain biopsies, with a focus on "astrocytic" intranuclear inclusions (AIIs). Case 1 presented with paroxysmal restlessness, vertigo, or fever and was later involved in severe dementia and tetraparesis. Case 2 presented with forgetfulness and then with paroxysmal fever and headache. In both cases, delimited areas with gadolinium enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging and corresponding hyperperfusion were detected, leading to brain biopsies of the cortex. On histology, Case 1 showed an abnormal lamination, where the thickness of layers was different from usual. Both neurons and astrocytes showed some dysmorphologic features. Notably, astrocytes rather than neurons harbored EIIs. Case 2 showed a cortex, where neurons tended to be arrayed in a columnar fashion. Astrocytes showed some dysmorphologic features. Notably, much more astrocytes than neurons harbored EIIs. By a double‐labeling immunofluorescence study for p62/NeuN and p62/glial fibrillary acidic protein, the predominance of AIIs was confirmed in both cases. Considering the physiological functions of astrocytes for the development and maintenance of the cortex, the encephalopathy‐like symptoms, dynamic change of cerebral blood flow, and cortical dysmorphology can reasonably be explained by the dysfunction of EII‐bearing astrocytes rather than EII‐bearing neurons. This study suggests the presence of a subtype of NIID where AIIs rather than "neuronal" intranuclear inclusions are likely a key player in the pathogenesis of NIID, particularly in cases with encephalopathy‐like symptoms. Background: The prognostic impact of dysphagia in multiple system atrophy (MSA) remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dysphagia severity and survival in MSA and to elucidate whether this impact differs between MSA-cerebellar ataxia (MSA-C) and MSA-parkinsonism (MSA-P). Methods: This retrospective study included 297 patients with MSA: 251 met criteria for clinically established MSA and 46 for clinically probable MSA. Among them, 171 had MSA-C and 126 had MSA-P. We evaluated symptomatic dysphagia within 3 years of onset and quantified dysphagia severity using the Hyodo score (0 to 12) through fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and clinical features, including autonomic dysfunction and vocal cord paralysis. Patients were followed up until death or tracheostomy, and survival factors were analysed using the log-rank test and multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. Results: Ninety patients developed symptomatic dysphagia within 3 years of onset, and 75 were evaluated for dysphagia severity using FEES. Survival from onset was shorter in patients with dysphagia within 3 years compared to those without (median: 4.2 years vs. 7.3 years; p < 0.001). Symptomatic dysphagia within 3 years of onset was an independent predictor of shorter survival in the multivariate Cox analysis. While the Hyodo score was higher in MSA-P than in MSA-C patients (p = 0.048), the Hyodo score was associated with survival in both MSA-C and MSA-P patients (log-rank p < 0.001 and p = 0.046, respectively). Background: Complete endoscopic resection of superficial non-ampullary duodenal epithelial tumors (SNADETs) is technically difficult, especially with an extremely high risk of adverse event (AE), although various endoscopic resection methods including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), underwater EMR (UEMR), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) have been tried for SNADETs. Accordingly, a novel simple resection method that can completely resect tumors with a low risk of AEs should be developed. Aims: A resection method of Noninjecting Resection using Bipolar Soft coagulation mode (NIRBS) which has been reported to be effective and safe for colorectal lesions is adapted for SNADETs. In this study we evaluated its effectiveness, safety, and simplicity for SNADETs measuring ≤ 20 mm. Results: This study included 13 patients with resected lesions with a mean size of 7.8 (range: 3–15) mm. The pathological distributions of the lesions were as follows: adenomas, 77% (n = 10) and benign and non-adenomatous lesions, 23% (n = 3). The en bloc and R0 resection rate was 100% (n = 13). The median procedure duration was 68 s (32–105). None of the patients presented with major AEs including bleeding and perforation. Conclusions: Large studies such as prospective, randomized, and controlled trials should be conducted for the purpose of validating effectiveness, safety, and simplicity of the NIRBS for SNADETs measuring ≤ 20 mm suggested in this study. Purpose: This study explored the difficulty factors in robot-assisted low and ultra-low anterior resection, focusing on simple measurements of the pelvic anatomy. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 61 patients who underwent robot-assisted low and ultra-low anterior resection for rectal cancer between October 2018 and April 2023. The relationship between the operative time in the pelvic phase and clinicopathological data, especially pelvic anatomical parameters measured on X-ray and computed tomography (CT), was evaluated. The operative time in the pelvic phase was defined as the time between mobilization from the sacral promontory and rectal resection. Results: Robot-assisted low and ultra-low anterior resections were performed in 32 and 29 patients, respectively. The median operative time in the pelvic phase was 126 (range, 31–332) min. A multiple linear regression analysis showed that a short distance from the anal verge to the lower edge of the cancer, a narrow area comprising the iliopectineal line, short anteroposterior and transverse pelvic diameters, and a small angle of the pelvic mesorectum were associated with a prolonged operative time in the pelvic phase. Conclusion: Simple pelvic anatomical measurements using abdominal radiography and CT may predict the pelvic manipulation time in robot-assisted surgery for rectal cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to establish an evaluation technique for the feline pelvic cavity using computed tomography (CT). Client-owned cats with a normal pelvis (n = 50) or pelvic stenosis (n = 3) were included. We categorized pelvic CT images in the normal pelvis group into two types according to pelvic cavity shape, then calculated the sacral index (SI), pelvic canal area (PCA), and PCA/sacral width index (PSI). The reference intervals of these variables were determined based on the results in the normal pelvis group. In the normal pelvis group, the PSI, unlike the SI and PCA, was not affected by body weight. In addition to high intraobserver and interobserver reproducibilities, the PSI showed no significant differences according to pelvic cavity shape. However, the SI exhibited significant differences among pelvic cavity shapes. In the stenosis group, the postoperative PSI in all cats was within the reference interval. However, the postoperative SI in one case was lower than the reference interval. The PSI may become a new method for evaluation of the pelvic cavity, including the pelvic floor. Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tumors exhibit resistance to chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and even immunotherapy. Dendritic cells use glucose to support their effector functions and play a key role in anti-tumor immunity by promoting cytotoxic CD8+ T cell activity. However, the effects of glucose and lactate levels on dendritic cells in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma are unclear. In this study, we aimed to clarify how glucose and lactate can impact the dendritic cell antigen-presenting function and elucidate the relevant mechanisms. Methods: Glycolytic activity and immune cell infiltration in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma were evaluated using patient-derived organoids and resected specimens. Cell lines with increased or decreased glycolysis were established from KPC mice. Flow cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing were used to evaluate the impacts on the tumor microenvironment. The effects of glucose and lactate on the bone marrow-derived dendritic cell antigen-presenting function were detected by flow cytometry. Results: The pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tumor microenvironment exhibited low glucose and high lactate concentrations from varying levels of glycolytic activity in cancer cells. In mouse transplantation models, tumors with increased glycolysis showed enhanced myeloid-derived suppressor cell infiltration and reduced dendritic cell and CD8+ T cell infiltration, whereas tumors with decreased glycolysis displayed the opposite trends. In three-dimensional co-culture, increased glycolysis in cancer cells suppressed the antigen-presenting function of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells. In addition, low-glucose and high-lactate media inhibited the antigen-presenting and mitochondrial functions of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the impact of dynamic glycolytic reprogramming on the composition of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, especially on the antigen-presenting function of dendritic cells. Background: The micro-axial flow pump Impella, a new mechanical circulatory device for cardiogenic shock, is still only available in a limited number of hospitals, due to the facility certification requirements and insufficient evidence of the benefit of introducing Impella in hospitals. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of introducing Impella in hospitals on in-hospital mortality of patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Methods: Using a nationwide Japanese inpatient database, we identified patients who received ECMO during hospitalization between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2021. A hospital-level propensity score–matched cohort was created matching hospitals that introduced Impella (exposure group) to those that did not introduce Impella (control group). The inclusion period in each hospital was divided into two time periods according to the time of Impella introduction in the exposure group and the corresponding hospital in the control group (before and after exposure). The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Uncontrolled and controlled interrupted time-series analyses involved before–after exposure comparison and exposure–control comparison. Results: Out of 34,379 eligible patients, we created a matched cohort of 8351 patients from 86 hospitals with Impella introduction (exposure group) and 7230 patients from 86 hospitals without Impella introduction (control group). In-hospital mortality before and after exposure was 62.5% and 59.3, respectively, in the exposure group; and 66.8% and 63.7%, respectively, in the control group. Uncontrolled interrupted time-series analysis showed no significant level change or trend change in the before–after exposure comparison in both the exposure and the control groups. Controlled interrupted time-series analysis also showed no significant level change (−0.01%; 95% confidence intervals −5.36% to + 5.33%) or trend change (+ 0.10%, −0.30% to + 0.40%) after exposure in the exposure–control comparison. Conclusions: This nationwide inpatient database study showed no association between Impella introduction in hospitals and in-hospital mortality of patients who underwent ECMO. Because this study confined itself to analze of the impact of the introduction of Impella solely at the hospital level, further detailed studies are warranted to assess its efficacy at the patient level. An efficient synthesis of tetrasubstituted arylalkenes was readily achieved by the reaction of α‐(tert‐butyl)benzylic alcohols using p‐toluenensulfonic acid monohydrate as a Brønsted acid. A broad range of substrates was applicable for the reaction in good yield with high regioselectivity. The key intermediate in the synthesis of tamoxifen was produced using the present method as an example, and a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed by examining the reaction intermediates. Background: Preoperative vascular embolization is an effective strategy for managing meningiomas, neck paragangliomas, renal cell carcinomas, and bone metastasis by reducing the intraoperative bleeding volume and operation time. Although hypervascular tumors also occur in the pancreas, preoperative embolization for these tumors is not commonly practiced. We herein present a case of a giant serous cystic neoplasm (SCN) of the pancreas with significant arterial vascularity that was managed with preoperative interventional radiology and subsequently resected via pancreaticoduodenectomy. Case presentation: A 60-year-old man presented with an 8-cm hypervascular tumor located at the head of the pancreas, identified as an SCN on pathologic examination. The tumor had increased by 13 mm over 5 years, necessitating surgical intervention. Computed tomography revealed a substantial blood supply to the tumor from the dorsal pancreatic artery and gastroduodenal artery, both branches of the superior mesenteric artery. To mitigate the risk of severe intraoperative bleeding from this giant hypervascular tumor, branches of the dorsal pancreatic artery and gastroduodenal artery were embolized using metallic coils and further secured using a gelatin sponge 1 day prior to pancreatectomy. During the laparotomy, the tumor appeared to have decreased in size, likely because of reduced distension and congestion. Despite significant adhesions to surrounding tissues secondary to prolonged compression and inflammation, the pancreaticoduodenectomy was completed successfully in 5 h and 15 min with blood loss of 763 mL. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 15 without complications. Conclusions: Preoperative arterial embolization for hypervascular pancreatic tumors might control the risk of massive intraoperative bleeding, contributing to a favorable postoperative outcome. Trace elements released into the atmosphere by human activities, such as fossil fuel combustion, flow into forest ecosystems via wet and dry deposition and can flow out via mountainous stream water. The Kajikawa catchment site in Niigata Prefecture, located on the Sea of Japan side in central Japan, suffers from large amounts of acidic substance deposition due to its geographical conditions and meteorological seasonality and is affected by transboundary air pollution originating from the Asian continent due to northwesterly seasonal winds in winter. This study determined the concentrations of trace elements dissolved in precipitation and stream water to comprehensively evaluate the effects of transboundary air pollution on forest ecosystems. The results showed that the concentrations of trace elements and major inorganic ions in precipitation tended to be high in winter and low in summer. The fluxes of many trace elements also increased in winter, reflecting high precipitation amount. Except for Sr, the enrichment factors of the highly enriched trace elements did not show clear seasonality. Therefore, they were continuously influenced by anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, the stable Pb isotope ratio changed significantly during the observation period; however, this was not explained by seasonal changes. This study revealed that trace elements are transported to the Sea of Japan side in central Japan, especially in winter; however, their quantity and content change in response to changes in local and transboundary air pollution. Urticarial vasculitis is characterized by persistent urticarial lesions lasting over 24 h. Urticarial vasculitis is often triggered by medications, infections, and autoimmune disorders. However, vaccinations against viral and bacterial pathogens have recently been documented to induce urticarial vasculitis. We describe the case of a 67-year-old woman who was presented with an extensive erythematous and purpuric rash without systemic symptoms 3 days after an influenza vaccination. She was diagnosed with normocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis based on clinical findings, normal complement levels, and histopathological findings of leukocytoclastic vasculitis. After receiving oral histamines, she showed complete resolution 3 months after receiving the influenza vaccination. Although vaccination-associated vasculitis is common, urticarial vasculitis following vaccinations is rare. We reviewed 13 cases of urticarial vasculitis following a wide range of vaccines, including those against Bacillus Calmette–Guérin, serogroup B meningococcus, influenza, and coronavirus disease. We conducted a comprehensive review of various aspects, including age, sex, past medical history, type of vaccination, number of vaccinations, onset time, cutaneous symptoms, place of eruption, systemic symptoms, laboratory disorders, treatment period, and treatment of urticarial vasculitis. Two patients developed hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis after vaccination, and both experienced systemic symptoms such as arthralgia and fever. In this review, no significant differences were found in the data, which may be attributed to the small number of cases. The mechanisms underlying the induction of urticarial vasculitis by vaccines remain unknown; however, in addition to immune complex deposition and complement activation due to vaccine components, molecular mimicry may trigger urticarial vasculitis by producing vaccine-derived pathogenic antigen antibodies. Osteosarcoma (OS) in humans is characterized by alterations in the TP53 gene. In mice, loss of p53 triggers OS development, for which c‐Myc (Myc) oncogenicity is indispensable. However, little is known about which genes are targeted by Myc to promote tumorigenesis. Here, we examined the role of γ‐glutamylcyclotransferase (Ggct) which is a component enzyme of the γ‐glutamyl cycle essential for glutathione homeostasis, in human and mouse OS development. We found that GGCT is a poor prognostic factor for human OS, and that deletion of Ggct suppresses p53‐deficient osteosarcomagenesis in mice. Myc upregulates Ggct directly by binding to the Ggct promoter, and deletion of a Myc binding site therein by genome editing attenuated the tumorigenic potential of p53‐deficient OS cells. Taken together, these results show a rationale that GGCT is widely upregulated in cancer cells and solidify its suitability as a target for anticancer drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recurrence analysis applications are hindered by several issues including the selection of critical parameters, noise sensitivity, computational complexity, or the analysis of non-stationary systems. Great progresses have been made by the community to address these issues individually, yet the diversity of resulting techniques with often additional parameters as well as a lack of consensus still impedes its use by nonspecialists. We present a procedure for simplified recurrence analysis based on compact recurrence plots with automatized parameter selection and enhanced noise robustness, and that are suited to the analysis of complex non-stationary systems. This approach aims at supporting the expansion of recurrence analysis for currently challenging or future applications such as for large systems, on-site studies, or using machine learning. In rainfed lowlands and water-saving cultivation systems, rice plants are often exposed to soil moisture fluctuation (SMF). Improving yield as well as grain quality is the main target for breeding under water-stressed environments. This study investigated the effects of different water treatment on yield, growth parameters, and grain quality under field conditions in Japan for 2 years. Two rice genotypes, Nipponbare (japonica) and G3-3 (derived from Nipponbare and KDML105, indica), were grown under continuous waterlogging (CWL) and SMF conditions. As the grain quality characteristics, grain appearance, dimension, and taste parameters were evaluated as well as yield and yield components. SMF reduced the yield, and G3-3 showed a higher yield than Nipponbare under SMF, which was attributed to the higher number of spikelets per panicle. G3-3 showed a better taste score (mark) with lower protein and amylose contents compared to Nipponbare. However, G3-3 had a higher percentage of broken grains, indicating a trade-off in grain quality traits. Non-structural carbohydrate dynamics may be involved as one of the grain quality characteristics. G3-3 demonstrated a superior yield under SMF conditions and have potential to show superior grain quality, indicating that the introgressed segments of G3-3 may be responsible for the grain quality traits associated with root plasticity. External female genital mutilation (EFGM) is the strategy employed by male spiders to ensure paternity during sexual conflict over female remating. Three orb-web spider species have been identified to engage in EFGM, wherein males remove the female's genital scape, which is crucial for successful genital coupling. Mutilated females lose their remating ability. Despite the apparent fitness advantage of mutilator males over non-mutilators, mutilation success rates vary across these species. The extent to which females engage in aggression and sexual cannibalism as potential countermeasures against EFGM is also variable. In this study, two consecutive staged matings were conducted in Cyclosa confusa and C. vallata spiders to determine the rate of successful mutilation and the influence of sexual cannibalism and female aggression. Both species exhibited low rates of sexual cannibalism and female aggression. While most matings involving unmated C. vallata females resulted in successful mutilation, one-third of C. confusa females retained an intact scape after mating. Additionally, mutilation rates in C. confusa increased with male size and weight and decreased with female weight. The Arun and Tista Rivers, which flow across the Himalayas, are commonly known as antecedent valleys that overcame the rapid uplift of the Higher Himalayan ranges. To clarify whether the idea of antecedent rivers is acceptable, we investigated the geomorphology of the Himalayas between eastern Nepal and Bhutan Himalayas. The southern part of Tibetan Plateau, extending across the Himalayas as tectonically un-deformed glaciated terrain named as 'Tibetan Corridor,' does not suggest the regional uplift of the Higher Himalayas. The 8,000-m class mountains of Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga are isolated residual peaks on the glaciated terrain composed of mountain peaks of 4,000–6,000 m high. The Tibetan glaciers commonly beheaded by Himalayan glaciers along the great watershed of the Himalayas suggest the expansion of Himalayan river drainage by glaciation. For the narrow upstream regions of the Arun and Tista Rivers with less precipitation behind the range, it is hard to collect enough water for the power of down-cutting their channels against the uplifting Himalayas. The fission track ages of the Higher Himalayan Crystalline Nappe suggest that the Himalayas attained their present altitude by 11–10 Ma, and the Arun and Tista Rivers formed deep gorges across the Himalayas by headward erosion. Although the survival rate of patients with childhood cancer has greatly improved, long‐term survivors face specific problems such as the late effects of cancer treatment. In this study, we estimated the number of people who had experienced childhood cancer to predict their needs for medical care and social resources. Using data from the population‐based Osaka Cancer Registry, we identified children aged 0–14 years who were diagnosed with cancer between 1975 and 2019. We estimated the prevalence on December 31, 2019, and the 5‐ and 10‐year prevalence (i.e., the number of survivors living up to 5 or 10 years after the diagnosis of cancer) over time. The prevalence proportion was age‐standardized using a direct standardization method. The prevalence estimates for Osaka were applied to the national population to determine the national prevalence in Japan. Among 8186 patients diagnosed with childhood cancer in Osaka, 5252 (987 per million) survived until December 31, 2019. The 5‐year prevalence per million increased from 194 in 1979 to 417 in 2019 (+116%), while the 10‐year prevalence increased from 391 in 1984 to 715 in 2019 (+83%). Based on the long‐term registry data, an estimated 73,182 childhood cancer survivors were living in Japan by the end of 2019. The increasing 5‐year and 10‐year prevalence proportions indicate the continued need for cancer survivorship support for children, adolescents, and young adults. These estimates of the prevalence of childhood cancer survivors, including long‐term survivors, may be useful for policymakers and clinicians to plan and evaluate survivorship care. Research about innovation management explores how the future is created—who is creating it (organizations, collaborations, etc.), for what aims (customer satisfaction, market performance, etc.), and with what broader effects (social, environmental, etc.). With this extended essay, we explore the potential futures of innovation management research in three ways. First, we briefly review the history of past research agendas and priorities published in the Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM), highlighting three broad topic areas (technological, social/environmental, and organizational) that have emerged over time and their potential disruptive implications for innovation management research. Second, we describe the outcome of a gathering of leading scholars in innovation management tasked with the challenge of identifying critical research paths for our field. This collaboration resulted in five "deep dive" essays into areas ripe for innovation management research in the years ahead: liquid innovation, artificial intelligence in innovation, business model innovation, public value innovation, and responsible innovation. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) exhibits different blood imaging features and prognosis depending on histology. To clarity histopathological growth patterns (HGPs) and vascularization processes of iCCA, we collected 145 surgical specimens and histologically classified them into large bile duct (LBD) (20 cases), small bile duct (SBD) (54), cholangiolocarcinoma (CLC) (35), combined SBD–CLC (cSBD–CLC) (26), and ductal plate malformation (DPM) (10) (sub)types. According to the invasive pattern at the interface between tumor and adjacent background liver, HGPs were classified into desmoplastic, pushing, and replacing HGPs. Desmoplastic HGP predominated in LBD type (55.5%), while replacing HGP was common in CLC (82.9%) and cSBD–CLC (84.6%) subtypes. Desmoplastic HGP reflected angiogenesis, while replacing HGP showed vessel co-option in addition to angiogenesis. By evaluating microvessel density (MVD) using vascular markers, ELTD1 identified vessel co-option and angiogenesis, and ELTD1-positive MVD at invasive margin in replacing HGP was significantly higher than those in desmoplastic and pushing HGPs. REDD1, an angiogenesis-related marker, demonstrated preferably higher MVD in the tumor center than in other areas. iCCA (sub)types and HGPs were closely related to vessel co-option and immune-related factors (lymphatic vessels, lymphocytes, and neutrophils). Craniofacial microsomia (CFM), also known as the oculo‐auriculo‐vertebral spectrum, is a congenital disorder characterized by hypoplasia of the mandible and external ear due to tissue malformations originating from the first and second branchial arches. However, distinguishing it from other syndromes of branchial arch abnormalities is difficult, and causal variants remain unidentified in many cases. In this report, we performed an exome sequencing analysis of a Brazilian family with CFM. The proband was a 12‐month‐old boy with clinical findings consistent with the diagnostic criteria for CFM, including unilateral mandibular hypoplasia, microtia, and external auditory canal abnormalities. A heterozygous de novo nonsense variant (c.713C>G, p.S238*) in PUF60 was identified, which was predicted to be pathogenic in silico. PUF60 has been reported as a causal gene in Verheij syndrome, but not in CFM. Although the boy showed craniofacial abnormalities and developmental delay that overlapped with Verheij syndrome, the facial asymmetry with unilateral hypoplasia of the mandible observed in this case did not match the previously reported phenotypes of PUF60 variants. Background/Aim: Glioblastoma is the most frequent type of adult-onset malignant brain tumor and has a very poor prognosis. Glioblastoma stem cells have been shown to be one of the mechanisms by which glioblastoma acquires therapy resistance. Therefore, there is a need to establish novel therapeutic strategies useful for inhibiting this cell population. γ-Glutamylcyclotransferase (GGCT) is an enzyme involved in the synthesis and metabolism of glutathione, which is highly expressed in a wide range of cancer types, including glioblastoma, and inhibition of its expression has been reported to have antitumor effects on various cancer types. The aim of this study was to clarify the function of GGCT in glioblastoma stem cells. Materials and Methods: We searched for pathways affected by GGCT overexpression in mouse embryonic fibroblasts NIH-3T3 by comprehensive gene expression analysis. Knockdown of GGCT and overexpression of desert hedgehog (DHH), a representative ligand of the pathway, were performed in glioblastoma stem cells derived from a mouse glioblastoma model. Results: GGCT overexpression activated the hedgehog pathway. Knockdown of GGCT inhibited proliferation of glioblastoma stem cells and reduced expression of DHH and the downstream target GLI family zinc finger 1 (GLI1). DHH overexpression significantly restored the growthsuppressive effect of GGCT knockdown. Conclusion: Ηigh GGCT expression is important for expression of DHH and activation of the hedgehog pathway, which is required to maintain glioblastoma stem cell proliferation. This study examines baseball players' recognition framework of out, ball, and strike counts in baseball games and clarifies the differences in psychological perspectives between batters and pitchers. The participants were 396 players (294 batters and 102 pitchers) belonging to baseball clubs at eight universities. Participants answered 288 questions for all game situations by combining out, ball, and strike counts and runner position. The advantages for batters or pitchers were evaluated using a 7-point Likert scale (from very advantageous for batters to very advantageous for pitchers). Factor analysis indicated four significant factors (36 items): "Batter's advantage count," "Pitcher's advantage count," "2 out young count," and "0 out young count." In a direct comparison of these factors between batters and pitchers, batters were more aware of their advantage over pitchers in the factors "Batter's advantage count" and "0 out young count" and disadvantage in the "Pitcher's advantage count." Significant differences in recognition of these factors were observed between batters and pitchers. Batters were more susceptible to game situations than were pitchers. We experimentally demonstrate the broadband and highly efficient inversion of the rotation direction of the terahertz circular polarization achieved by a dynamic metasurface with vanadium dioxide ( VO 2 ). This metasurface converts linear polarization into circular polarization. The rotational direction of the output circular polarization can be reversed based on the VO 2 phase transition. The VO 2 state can be dynamically switched by injecting direct current into an on-chip circuit. To improve the terahertz-wave utilization efficiency, the metasurface is operated at an incident angle of 45°, thereby eliminating the beam splitter typically used to separate the outgoing wave from the incident wave at normal incidence. To achieve broadband operation, we employ a dispersion-cancelation strategy that cancels the dispersive phase responses between orthogonal linear polarizations. This strategy was previously developed for static metasurfaces; we have applied it to the design of dynamic metasurfaces. At a center frequency of 0.99 THz, the experimental evaluation demonstrated helicity switching with conversion efficiencies of 92% and 87% for the insulating and metallic states of VO 2 , respectively. Dispersion cancelation is simultaneously achieved for the insulating and metallic states of VO 2 , resulting in a relative bandwidth of 0.26, which is 3.2 times broader than that of a previously developed efficient dynamic metasurface. The activator and inhibitor are synthesized as intermediates of the reaction system in the Turing model. Turing found that spatially periodic stationary concentration patterns are spontaneously generated when the diffusion coefficient of the activator is lower than that of the inhibitor. The first experimental realization of the Turing pattern was achieved in 1990 in a chlorite-iodide-malonic acid (CIMA) reaction system. Iodide and chlorite anions act as the activator and inhibitor of this reaction system, respectively. Although there is no significant difference in the diffusion coefficient of iodide and chlorite anions, the Turing pattern was generated because starch was added to the gel reactor to enhance the color tone. The size and site dependences of atomic and electronic structures in isolated and supported gold nanoparticles have been investigated using large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations using multi-site support functions. The effects of the substrate on nanoparticles with diameters of 2 nm and several different shapes have been examined. First, isolated gold nanoparticles with diameters of 0.6 nm (13 atoms) to 4.5 nm (2057 atoms), which have comparable sizes to nanoparticles used in experiments, were considered. To analyse huge amounts of data obtained from large-scale DFT calculations, we performed principal component analysis (PCA), which helps systematically and efficiently clarify the electronic structures of large nanoparticles. The PCA results reveal the site dependence of the electronic structures. Notably, the atoms in the surface and subsurface have different electronic structures to those located in the inner layers, especially at the vertexes of the particles. The convergence of local electronic structures with respect to the particle size has also been demonstrated. For supported nanoparticles, PCA helps indicate which atoms are affected, and how much, by the substrate. Photothermal soft actuators have become a hot research topic in recent years due to the unique light-to-heat conversion, mechanical deformation, contactless operation, and extended applications from bionic design to intelligent robots. Moreover, since superhydrophobic surfaces offer drag reduction, anticorrosive, and oil absorption properties, the synergistic effects expand their smartness in micro-robots, environmental remediation, bioengineering, transportation, wireless delivery, and oil spill recovery applications. In this review, we have provided an overview of soft actuators based on the photothermal effect. We begin with a comprehensive overview of the photothermal conversion mechanism and the photothermal actuation mechanism. It explores three different types of photothermal actuation, discussing their design and mechanisms. Furthermore, we focus on the latest advancements in photothermal soft actuators, categorizing them based on actuation mechanisms and addressing their significance and associated challenges. The photothermal soft actuators enable bionic-like soft movement in the horizontal and vertical directions through bending, contraction, and rotation in response to light-induced heat. Then, this review introduces various applications of photothermal soft actuators. Finally, we draw insightful conclusions and expose exciting new possibilities in the field of photothermal actuators to create innovative solutions for photothermal soft actuators that will eventually benefit society. The genome is constantly exposed to DNA damage from endogenous and exogenous sources. Fine modulation of DNA repair, chromatin remodeling, and transcription factors is necessary for protecting genome integrity, but the precise mechanisms are still largely unclear. We found that after ionizing radiation (IR), global trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 4 (H3K4me3) was decreased at an early (5 min) post-IR phase but increased at an intermediate (180 min) post-IR phase in both human and mouse hematopoietic cells. We demonstrated that PTIP, a component of the MLL histone methyltransferase complex, is required for H3K4me3 upregulation in the intermediate post-IR phase and promotes cell cycle arrest by epigenetically inducing a cell cycle inhibitor, PRDM1. In addition, we found that PTIP expression is specifically downregulated in acute myeloid leukemia patients. Chiral guanidine-catalyzed acylative and silylative dynamic kinetic resolutions of 6-hydroxy-2 H -pyran-3(6 H)-one were achieved. We succeeded in developing a non-enzymatic acylative dynamic kinetic resolution of 6-hydroxy-2 H -pyran-3(6 H)-one with high enantioselectivity, which could be improved by recrystallization. SUMMARY: Microseismic monitoring is an important technique to obtain detailed knowledge of in-situ fracture size and orientation during stimulation to maximize fluid flow throughout the rock volume and optimize production. Furthermore, considering that the frequency of earthquake magnitudes empirically follows a power law (i.e. Gutenberg–Richter), the accuracy of microseismic event magnitude distributions is potentially crucial for seismic risk management. In this study, we analyse microseismicity observed during four hydraulic fracture treatments of the legacy Cotton Valley experiment in 1997 at the Carthage gas field of East Texas, where fractures were activated at the base of the sand-shale Upper Cotton Valley formation. We perform waveform cross-correlation to detect similar event clusters, measure relative amplitude from aligned waveform pairs with a principal component analysis, then measure precise relative magnitudes. The new magnitudes significantly reduce the deviations between magnitude differences and relative amplitudes of event pairs. This subsequently reduces the magnitude differences between clusters located at different depths. Reduction in magnitude differences between clusters suggests that some attenuation-related biases could be effectively mitigated with relative magnitude measurements. The maximum likelihood method is applied to understand the magnitude frequency distributions and quantify the seismogenic index of the clusters. Statistical analyses with new magnitudes suggest that fractures that are more favourably oriented for shear failure have lower b-value and higher seismogenic index, suggesting higher potential for relatively larger earthquakes, rather than fractures subparallel to maximum horizontal principal stress orientation. We investigate XeKr in high Rydberg states by mass-resolved optical-optical double resonance excitation spectroscopy. We excite XeKr via two-photon absorption to the v* = 0 and v* = 2 vibrational levels of an intermediate electronically excited state of Xe*Kr correlated to Xe*6p[5/2]2 and excite Xe*Kr further via one-photon absorption to the high Rydberg states of Xe**Kr in the energy range of 93200–97400 cm−1. The potential energy curves and the quantum defects of the d-Rydberg and s-Rydberg series of Xe**Kr, converging the A 2Π3/2 state of XeKr+ are determined. From the kinetic energy release in the predissociation process, we conclude that the ion-core switching occurs by the interaction between the bound electronic states of Xe**Kr converging to the A 2Π3/2 state of XeKr+ and the repulsive electronic states of low-lying electronic states of XeKr**. Based on numerical simulations, we interpret the dependence of the yield of the ion-core switching on the excitation energy in terms of the population transfer from the bound electronic states of the high Rydberg states Xe**Kr, converging to the A 2Π3/2 state of XeKr+, to those converging to the electronic ground X2 $ \mathrm{\Sigma }_{1/2}^ + $ Σ 1 / 2 + state of XeKr + . To accelerate the transition toward zero net carbon emissions, developing the technologies which are already mature enough to be integrated technologically and economically in existing systems is essential. Most of the recent studies are focusing on large scale energy systems which require lot of assumptions such as linear approximations. This paper presents the economical optimization of combined thermal and electrical supply of multiple cities in Japan through utilization of combined heat and power boilers. A nonlinear approach is used to consider phenomena including combustion efficiencies variations or effect of scale. Different technologies of combined heat and power are modeled with different properties and fuels such as household wastes and multiple biomass woods. The cost is used as the objective function to minimize considering current energy costs. With each boiler modeled and sized, optimization results show an optimal operation of 100% renewable resources, especially biomass power with accurate indicators on the operating mode of those technologies. Odours used by insects for foraging and mating are carried by the air. Insects induce airflows around them by flapping their wings, and the distribution of these airflows may strongly influence odour source localisation. The flightless silkworm moth, Bombyx mori, has been a prominent insect model for olfactory research. However, although there have been numerous studies on antenna morphology and its fluid dynamics, neurophysiology, and localisation algorithms, the airflow manipulation of the B. mori by fanning has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we performed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of flapping B. mori to analyse this mechanism in depth. A three-dimensional simulation using reconstructed wing kinematics was used to investigate the effects of B. mori fanning on locomotion and pheromone capture. The fanning of the B. mori was found to generate an aerodynamic force on the scale of its weight through an aerodynamic mechanism similar to that of flying insects. Our simulations further indicate that the B. mori guides particles from its anterior direction within the ~ 60° horizontally by wing fanning. Hence, if it detects pheromones during fanning, the pheromone can be concluded to originate from the direction the head is pointing. The anisotropy in the sampling volume enables the B. mori to orient to the pheromone plume direction. Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (PACC) is a very rare subtype of pancreatic cancer. Due to small number of patients, no standard chemotherapy protocol has been established. We experienced an extremely rare case of PACC with liver metastasis that showed a pathological complete response after modified FOLFIRINOX (mFFX) therapy. A 42-year-old man who underwent distal pancreatectomy for an 80 mm tumor at the pancreatic tail 3 years ago was referred to our hospital in September 2017 for the treatment of a recurrent liver tumor. Percutaneous biopsy revealed an acinar-neuroendocrine carcinoma, similar to the surgical specimen. He received eight cycles of irinotecan plus cisplatin chemotherapy. However, the tumor increased in size, and treatment was switched to mFFX therapy. The tumor in the liver shrank remarkably after nine cycles of mFFX therapy. Conversion surgery was selected, and the patient underwent hepatic left and caudate lobectomy 8 months after administration of mFFX. The resected specimen showed no viable tumor cells, indicating a pathological complete response. The histological diagnosis was reconsidered, and PACC was finally diagnosed via an additional immunohistological review. The patient has remained well with no recurrence for 6 years after surgery. Immune checkpoints are mechanisms that allow cancer cells to evade immune surveillance and avoid destruction by the body's immune system. Tumor cells exploit immune checkpoint proteins to inhibit T cell activation, thus enhancing their resistance to immune attacks. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, like nivolumab, work by reactivating these suppressed T cells to target cancer cells. However, this reactivation can disrupt immune balance and cause immune-related adverse events. This report presents a rare case of prurigo nodularis that developed six months after administering nivolumab for lung adenocarcinoma. While immune-related adverse events are commonly linked to T helper-1- or T helper-17-type inflammations, T helper-2-type inflammatory reactions, as observed in our case, are unusual. The PD-1–PD-L1 pathway is typically associated with T helper-1 and 17 responses, whereas the PD-1–PD-L2 pathway is linked to T helper-2 responses. Inhibition of PD-1 can enhance PD-L1 functions, potentially shifting the immune response towards T helper-1 and 17 types, but it may also influence T helper-2-type inflammation. Because fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) require high-speed taxiing for takeoff and landing, the aircraft's stability during taxiing is critical. However, despite research on the taxiing stability of fixed-wing UAVs conducted in taxiing motion simulations employing various tire models, the applicability of the models to fixed-wing UAV taxiing simulations remains unclear, as does the rationale behind the parameter settings in the models. Therefore, in our study, we measured the forces acting on the tires of a fixed-wing UAV under various conditions, including tire loads of 1.6–3.6 kg and tire slip angles of 0–40 deg. Based on the results, we modified conventional tire models and assessed their applicability in taxiing simulations. Among our findings, the parameter values of the models significantly differed from those used in crewed aircraft taxiing simulations, and the presence or absence of load parameters in the lateral force tire models significantly affected the dynamics. Furthermore, the aerodynamics acting on the aircraft enhanced the straight-line stability during taxiing, resulting in reduced forces on the tires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Our objective was to investigate the association between the presence of placental anastomoses and intertwin differences in renin‐angiotensin‐aldosterone activation in monochorionic twins using amniotic fluid aldosterone (AF‐ALD) levels. In addition, this study also examined the association between AF‐ALD and the ALD levels in the umbilical cord blood (UCB‐ALD) in monochorionic twins. Material and Methods: This prospective study included monochorionic diamniotic (MD) twin pregnancies that were not complicated by twin‐to‐twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) at delivery. Amniotic fluid and umbilical cord vein blood samples were collected from each twin at delivery, and the ALD levels were measured subsequently. The MD twins were divided into two groups: those with placental anastomoses and those without anastomoses owing to fetoscopic laser surgery. The differences in the AF‐ALD levels between the larger and smaller twins were analyzed. Results: The AF‐ALD levels showed a strong and significant positive correlation with UCB‐ALD levels in 131 MD twins (r = 0.804, p < 0.001). Intertwin differences were examined in 41 and 28 pairs of MD twins with and without placental anastomoses, respectively. The AF‐ALD levels in the smaller twins were significantly higher than those in the larger twins among the pairs of MD twins with placental anastomoses (p = 0.003); however, no statistically significant intertwin differences were observed among the twins without placental anastomoses (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The AF‐ALD levels reflect the UCB‐ALD levels in MD twins. The presence of placental anastomoses led to intertwin discordance in the ALD levels in MD twins even uncomplicated with TTTS. Recent advances in treating colorectal cancer (CRC) have increased the importance of multidisciplinary treatment. This study aimed to clarify trends in the treatment and survival of CRC using population‐based cancer registry data in Japan. We analyzed the survival of CRC cases diagnosed from 1995 through 2015 from a population‐based cancer registry of six prefectures. The year of diagnosis was classified into five periods, and the trends in the detailed categorization of treatments and survival were identified. We calculated net survival and excess hazard of death from cancer using data on 256,590 CRC patients. The use of laparoscopic surgery has been increasing since 2005 and accounts for the largest proportion of treatment types in the most recent period. Net survival of CRC patients diagnosed after 2005 remained high for laparoscopic surgery and endoscopic surgery (endoscopic mucosal resection or endoscopic submucosal dissection). There was an upward trend in treatment with chemotherapy in addition to open and laparoscopic surgery. Using the excess hazard ratio at the regional stage since 2005, there has been a significant improvement in survival in the younger age group and the rectum cancer group. By type of treatment, there was a tendency toward significant improvement in the open surgery + chemotherapy group. We clarified the trends in treating CRC and the associated trends in survival. Purpose: Within families affected by parental cancer, open communication impacts the well-being of parents and their children; however, limited research exists on communication patterns in these families. This sub-study addresses this through the Family-SCOUT study, a multicenter, prospective, interventional, and non-randomized investigation with intervention (IG) and control group (CG). The purpose of this sub-study was to identify and compare the differences in communication patterns between the IG and CG as part of the process evaluation. The research question was addressed in both groups: What communication patterns do healthy parents perceive within their families? Methods: Using a qualitative approach, the study involved interviewing healthy parents as surrogates for their families. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded using a template analysis. The resulting data were analyzed at the group level. Results: Twenty-three interviews were conducted in the IG and 27 interviews in the CG. The analysis of themes centered on communication patterns as seen in the family structure. Both groups exhibited instances of open communication about fears and wishes as well as the use of child-friendly language when discussing cancer. Notable differences were observed: challenges in open communication with children were sorely reported in CG interviews, and “the illness is discussed when necessary” was sorely described in IG interviews. Aims: Plasma volume status (PVS), a measure of plasma volume, has been evaluated as a prognostic marker for chronic heart failure. Although the prognostic value of PVS has been reported, its significance in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) admitted to the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CICU) remains unclear. In this study, we examined the relationship between PVS and long‐term mortality in patients with ADHF admitted to the CICU. Methods: Between January 2018 and December 2020, 363 consecutive patients with ADHF were admitted to the Nippon Medical School Hospital CICU. Of the 363 patients, 206 (mean age, 74.9 ± 12.9 years; men, 64.6%) were enrolled in this study. Patients who received red blood cell transfusions, underwent dialysis, were discharged from the CICU or died in the hospital were excluded from the study. We measured the PVS of the patients at admission, transfer to the general ward (GW) and discharge using the Kaplan–Hakim formula. The patients were assigned to four groups according to the quartiles of their PVS measured at each of the three abovementioned timepoints. We examined the association between PVS and all‐cause mortality during the observation period (1134 days). The primary endpoint of this study was all‐cause mortality. Results: The Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that the high PVS group had a significantly higher mortality rate at admission, transfer to the GW and discharge than the other groups (log‐rank test: P = 0.016, P = 0.005 and P < 0.001, respectively). Univariate Cox regression analysis showed that age, body mass index, history of heart failure, use of beta‐blockers, albumin level, blood urea nitrogen level, N‐terminal pro‐brain natriuretic peptide level and left ventricular ejection fraction were significantly different among the PVS groups and thus were not significant prognostic factors for ADHF. Furthermore, the multivariate analysis revealed that PVS at discharge [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.06 (1.00–1.12), P = 0.048] was an independent poor prognostic factor for ADHF. Conclusions: This study highlights the effect of PVS measured at different timepoints on the prognoses of ADHF patients. Regular assessment of PVS, particularly at discharge, is crucial for optimising patient management and achieving favourable outcomes in cases of ADHF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
