To investigate how the long-term application of inorganic fertilizer and organic amendments affects the turnover rates of organic matter in physico-chemically fractionated components in paddy soils and how their rates are related to their amounts, we studied the effect of variable management of inorganic fertilizer and organic amendments for > 50 years on the ∆14C values of accumulated soil organic carbon (SOC) in fractionated components of 5 soil samples from three paddy fields. SOC was fractionated into four components based on their physico-chemical properties: (1) light fraction (LF) derived from plant residues, (2) heavy fraction (HF) containing stable aggregates, (3) oxidizable fraction (OxF) and (4) non-oxidizable fraction (NOxF) forming organo-mineral complexes with fine-textured minerals. The ∆14C values were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry using graphitized samples. The ∆14C values of SOC in NOxF (from −305‰ to − 90.5‰) were much lower than those of HF (from −123‰ to − 3.7‰) and OxF (from −215‰ to 21.0‰). Lowest values for NOxF suggested slowest turnover rates as expected, and higher and comparable values for OxF and HF implied much faster turnover rates of SOC in OxF compared with upland soils. This could be one of the characteristics of SOC dynamics in paddy soils, probably reflecting repeated puddling of plow layer soils. ∆14C values in all the fractions increased in response to the application of inorganic fertilizer and organic amendments, suggesting faster turnover rate. Soils with clayey and weathered characteristics had the lowest ∆14C values, or slowest turnover rates among the study fields. The relationship between the ∆14C value and the amount of accumulated C for HF, OxF and NOxF indicated that the more the SOC accumulated, the faster the turnover rate of the SOC was, regardless of the fractions, and the relationship of the HF was considerably different from those of OxF and NOxF. The amount of accumulated C in all fractions increased slightly with the application of inorganic fertilizer, while it increased considerably with the use of organic amendments. In addition, the application of fertilizers and amendments raised the proportion of C content in LF and HF, which are labile and related to soil fertility. Stepwise multiple regression analysis using two principal component analysis scores of soil properties and anthropogenic C input further revealed that the labile fractions (LF and HF) were more strongly determined by the management of fertilizers and amendments, while the stable fractions (OxF and NOxF) were more strongly determined by soil-specific properties, mainly the amorphous nature of the soil. These results indicate that the use of certain amounts of organic amendments would be recommended to carry out rational management to improve soil fertility and C sequestration in paddy fields, with the application of amorphous minerals as an additional option. It is a general problem in geoscience to estimate the time-series of velocity and temperature fields for a fluid based on limited observations, such as the flow velocity at the fluid surface and/or a temperature snapshot after flow. In this study, an adjoint-based data assimilation method (also known as 4-D variational data assimilation) was used to reconstruct the thermal convection in a highly viscous fluid (e.g. Earth's mantle) to investigate which observations constrain the thermal convection and how accurately the convection can be reconstructed for different wavelengths. The data assimilated to the adjoint-based model were generated synthetically from forward models with convecting cells of different length-scales. Based on the surface velocity and temperature snapshot, our simulations successfully reconstructed thermal convection over 50 Myr in the case that the wavelength of the convective cells is sufficiently large. We obtained two main results from this parametric study. (1) When we only considered instantaneous thermal structure fitting in the cost function, the convection reconstruction tended to fail. However, there are some cases where the laminar thermal convection can be reconstructed by assimilating only the velocity along the fluid surface. (2) There is a limit to the reconstruction of thermal convection in the case that the convecting cells are small (∼1000 km for a 50 Myr reconstruction). We propose that (1) is related to the balance of forces due to the thermal buoyancy and viscous stress around the thermal anomalies and (2) is related to how information is preserved (i.e. how the previous thermal structure is maintained in the observable state throughout the convection process). The results enable the use of geological records to estimate time-series of velocity and temperature in Earth's deep interior, even though the records may only contain information from shallow parts of Earth. Background: The current standard operation for proximal gastric and gastroesophageal junction (P/GEJ) cancers with limited esophageal extension is total gastrectomy (TG). TG is associated with impaired appetite and weight loss due to the loss of gastric functions such as production of ghrelin and with anemia due to intrinsic factor loss and vitamin B12 malabsorption. Theoretically, proximal gastrectomy (PG) can mitigate these problems by preserving gastric function. However, PG with direct esophagogastric reconstruction is associated with severe postoperative reflux, delayed gastric emptying, and poor quality of life (QoL). Minimally invasive PG (MIPG) with antireflux techniques has been increasingly performed by experts but is technically demanding owing to its complexity. Moreover, the actual advantages of MIPG over minimally invasive TG (MITG) with regards to postoperative QoL are unknown. Our overall objective of this study is to determine the short-term QoL benefits of MIPG. Our central hypotheses are that MIPG is safe and that patients have improved appetite after MIPG with effective antireflux techniques, which leads to an overall QoL improvement when compared with MITG. Methods: Enrollment of a total of 60 patients in this prospective survey-collection study is expected. Procedures (MITG versus MIPG, antireflux techniques for MIPG [double-tract reconstruction versus the double-flap technique]) will be chosen based on surgeon and/or patient preference. Randomization is not considered feasible because patients often have strong preferences regarding MITG and MIPG. The primary outcome is appetite level (reported on a 0-10 scale) at 3 months after surgery. With an expected 30 patients per cohort (MITG versus MIPG), this study will have 80% power to detect a one-point difference in appetite level. Patient-reported outcomes will be longitudinally collected (including questions about appetite and reflux), and specific QoL items, body weight, body mass index and ghrelin, albumin, and hemoglobin levels will be compared. Discussion: Surgeons from the US, Japan, and South Korea formed this collaboration with the agreement that the surgical approach to P/GEJ cancers is an internationally important but controversial topic that requires immediate action. At the completion of the proposed research, our expected outcome is the establishment of the benefit and safety of MIPG. Large variations in the maximum earthquake magnitude ( M max ) have been observed among the world's subduction zones. There is still no universal relationship between M max and a given subduction-zone parameter, such as plate age, plate dip angle, or plate velocity, which suggests that multiple parameters control M max . Here, we conduct exhaustive variable selections that are based on three evaluation criteria; leave-one-out cross-validation errors (LOOCVE), Akaike information criterion (AIC), and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) to determine the combination of subduction-zone parameters that best explains M max . Multiple linear regression analyses are applied using 18 subduction-zone parameters as potential candidates for the explanatory variables of M max . The minimum BIC is obtained when five variables (trench sediment thickness, existence of an accretionary prism, upper-plate crustal thickness, bending radius of the subducting oceanic plate, and trench depth) are selected as explanatory variables; each variable contributes positively to M max . Minimum LOOCVE and AIC values are obtained when eight variables (the five parameters for BIC, plus the along-strike plate convergence rate, age of the subducting plate, and maximum depth of the subducting plate) are selected. Our selection of the trench sediment thickness and plate bending radius contributing to M max is consistent with previous studies. The results show that increasing upper-plate crustal thickness results in a large M max . In addition to smoothing the subducting-plate interface via subducted sediments, along-dip extension of the crustal area along the convergent plate boundary would be important for generating a large earthquake. To investigate the interactive effects of parent material and topography as soil forming factors, we examined the distribution of soil materials in an alluvial plain, where two types of surface geology were situated upstream and different parent materials supplied accordingly. We hypothesized that these two types of parent material make it possible to trace alluvial processes by analyzing their spatial distribution based on soil physicochemical properties. We collected 101 soil samples from the alluvial plain and nine soil samples from two types of unmixed upstream areas, i.e., granite and mélange. Particle size distributions and total concentrations of 32 elements were analyzed for spatial variabilities. Elemental composition of unmixed upstream samples and isarithmic maps of elemental composition of the soils in the alluvial plain based on geostatistical analysis revealed that gravel, coarse sand and total Na, Al, K, Ca, and Mn concentrations were higher at the southern part close to granite rock areas, whereas silt+clay content and total C, N, Mg, Ti, and Fe concentrations were higher at the northern part close to the mélange area, suggesting strong influence from parent material. In contrast, fine sand content and total P and Si concentrations showed west-east trends, suggesting topography effects reflecting particle size selection. Directional semivariograms suggest coarse sand and silt+clay content, as well as total C, N, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ti, and Mn concentrations were more strongly affected by parent material, whereas gravel and fine sand and total P concentration were more strongly affected by topography. Accordingly, the combination of elemental composition analysis and geostatistics revealed that the contribution of parent material and topography to total elemental contents in paddy surface soils in the alluvial plain varied among elements. In conclusion, evaluation of the interactive effects of parent material and topography on spatial variability of soil material characteristics enabled better understanding of soil formation processes and their potential fertility. To prove the hypothesis that paddy rice utilizes soil nonexchangeable potassium (neK) and causes associated structural changes in clay minerals, K status and clay mineralogy of 22 surface soils from three paddy fields under long‐term fertilizer management for 51–93 years were investigated. Soil neK content was determined as the difference between 1 mol L−1 hot HNO3 extractable K and 1 mol L−1 ammonium acetate exchangeable K. Clay mineralogy was identified by X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The radiocesium interception potential (RIP), an index of frayed edge sites in the interlayer sites of 2:1 type clay minerals, was also determined. The neK contents under the ‐K and NPK treatments were considerably lower than those under the unfertilized treatment in all the fields, indicating the exploitation of soil neK by rice. XRD analysis of the clay samples revealed 7% shift from the 1.0 peak to 1.4 nm one under the ‐K treatment compared with the unfertilized one, and the amounts of neK were negatively correlated with those of RIP (p <.01), suggesting the expansion of interlayer spaces of the 2:1 type phyllosilicates such as mica due to the release of neK. In addition, the neK content positively correlated with K balance of the long‐term experiments (p <.05). The differences of neK between unfertilized K and ‐K treatments corresponded to 22–157 kg K ha−1, or 0.42–1.68 kg K ha−1 year−1. After our coauthors described the first remote‐access parathyroidectomy (RAP) series in 2000, several other approaches were developed. No systematic review has been performed to classify and evaluate RAP techniques. We performed a literature search using PubMed and Cochrane Library (CENTRAL). A total of 71 studies met our inclusion/exclusion criteria. RAP can be categorized into five approaches: (1) endoscopic and robotic axillary, (2) anterior chest, (3) transoral, (4) retroauricular, and (5) a combination of these approaches. The limited data in the literature suggest that the cure rates and safety of RAP are in no way inferior to those of open parathyroidectomy. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages, and the recommendations for the selection of each approach are listed. Purpose: After our group described the first remote-access thyroidectomy series in 2000, the procedure has been further developed. Although a thoracoscopic approach with a conventional open cervical incision for thyroid goiters with mediastinal extension has been performed at many institutions, remote-access thyroidectomy for cervicomediastinal goiters has not been established. We have performed combined thoracoscopic and axillary subcutaneous endoscopic thyroidectomies (axillo-thoracic endoscopic thyroidectomies). Here, we describe a novel technique for performing a remote-access thyroidectomy for a cervicomediastinal goiter (CMG). Patients and methods: The patients with CMGs who agreed to an axillo-thoracic endoscopic thyroidectomy at one of two hospitals in Japan underwent a remote-access thyroidectomy. Results: We performed the axillo-thoracic endoscopic right or left hemithyroidectomy successfully, but most of the patients did not require the thoracoscopic procedure. None of the patients had complications, and none was converted to an open thyroidectomy. Conclusions: Most thyroid goiters with substernal extension can be removed by the axillary approach, but some cases require a thoracoscopic approach. The novel approach described herein (axillo-thoracic endoscopic thyroidectomy) enables the safe excision of a CMG with high patient satisfaction for selected patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pancreatic serous neoplasms are rare tumors that are usually benign. However, histopathological differentiation between benign (serous cystadenoma) and malignant (serous cystadenocarcinoma) lesions is difficult. We present the case of a patient with pancreatic serous cystadenocarcinoma that was diagnosed with liver metastasis 7 years after the resection of the primary serous neoplastic lesion. A woman in her 60 s was diagnosed with pancreatic serous cystadenoma based on imaging and histopathological examination findings. The tumor was resected, and the patient was followed up every 6 months to monitor tumor progression. At 7 years after the resection of the primary lesion, liver tumors showing marked flare-like contrast enhancements were detected on arterial phase computed tomography findings and on dynamic magnetic resonance imaging findings acquired 60 s after the administration of a contrast agent. Laparoscopic segmental hepatectomy of S4 and S6 was performed to resect these tumors. Histopathological examination revealed that these tumors were metastatic and developed from the primary lesion. Therefore, a diagnosis of serous cystadenocarcinoma was confirmed. The flare-like contrast enhancement around the metastatic liver lesions on computed tomography and dynamic magnetic resonance images may be an indicator of serous cystadenocarcinoma with liver metastasis that could assist in diagnosis. Over 50 years of the Green Revolution since the 1960s, the global population has increased by 2.5 times, cereal production by 3.3 times and the use of N, P and K fertilisers by 9.4, 4.2 and 4.3 times, respectively. Information is still limited, however, on the influence of these impacts on the fertility status of agricultural soils. Here we investigated the influence of the Green Revolution on 142 paddy soils in three tropical Asian countries, that is, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, during the given period by repeated soil sampling in the 1960s and 2010s at or near the same locations. We revealed that the phytoavailablility indices of three macronutrients – N, P and K, that is, available P, exchangeable K and total N, showed 743% (p < 0.01), 12% and 1% increase on average, respectively, while total C showed 9% decline. Comprehensive investigation of overall fertility status by factor analysis using 11 soil parameters suggested that only the factor scores associated with 'available P status' increased drastically in all the three countries (p < 0.01) whereas those associated with 'organic matter and N contents' and 'inherent potentiality' did not exhibit any consistent changes among the countries. In conclusion, intensive soil/fertiliser management systems under the Green Revolution have successfully improved the nutrient status, especially P status, of paddy soils with slight decrease of soil organic matter over the last 50 years, while a large amount of nutrients applied, especially N and K, has been released from soil to the outer environments. Conversion to a high‐efficiency system of external nutrient inputs with organic matter‐conserving strategies is, therefore, urgently required to secure sustainable food production while restoring the environment during the coming decades. This study presents a forward model to quantify the P‐wave velocity (VP), S‐wave velocity (VS), and electrical conductivity (σ) of the solid‐liquid mixtures for a given set of pressure, temperature, lithology, liquid phase (aqueous fluid or melt), liquid fraction, and geometrical parameters in relation to the aspect ratio and connectivity of the liquid phase. This is based on previous experimental and theoretical studies on seismic velocity and electrical conductivity of solid rocks and liquid phases. A total of 78 lithologies, an aqueous fluid with NaCl (∼0–10 wt.%), and mafic to felsic melt appropriate for the crust and the uppermost mantle conditions were described in terms of VP, VS, and σ, as per previous experimental measurements and molecular dynamics simulation. This forward model is provided as a Windows executable program, and generates synthetic VP, VS, and σ, referring to the seismic velocities and electrical conductivity observed in the northeast Japan arc. After generation of the synthetic VP, VS, and σ, the original lithology and liquid parameters (phase, fraction, aspect ratio, and connectivity) were searched by implementing the grid search algorithm to map the misfit over the broad parameter space. The mapping shows the presence of a global misfit minimum around the optimized solution and the possibility of resolving the lithology and the liquid phase parameters based on the observed VP, VS, and σ by using the forward model presented in this study. The Green Revolution (GR) made a major contribution to increasing the rice yield in the Philippines from 1.3 t ha−1 in 1966 to 4.0 t ha−1 in 2018, but the changes in paddy soil fertility that occurred during this 50-year period remain unknown. We collected 37 soil samples from the plow layers of paddy fields in Luzon, Leyte, Panay, and Mindanao in the Philippines in 2016 and 2017 (the '2010s') and compared their fertility-related soil properties with published data for soil samples collected from the same or nearby sampling sites in 1969 (the '1960s'). Paddy soils in the Philippines had relatively high exchangeable calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) content, cation exchange capacity (CEC), available silicon (Si) content, and total carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content, reflecting their indigenous pedological background. We found that the 2010s soils had a lower available N content, particularly in wetter regions, despite the high input of N fertilizers, whereas the available phosphorus (P) showed a six-fold increase from the 1960s to the 2010s. The total potassium (K) content had significantly decreased during this period, possibly due to the mining effect of intensive farming with K-deficient fertilization. The 2010s soils contained a greater silt content and higher proportion of smectite in the clay fraction, which may have been transported from upstream via irrigation water. The increase in smectite corresponded with a significant increase in the cation exchange capacity, despite the organic C and clay contents tending to decrease, and these increases in smectite and soil pH may have contributed to the increase in the available fraction of Si that had not been applied as fertilizers. These findings demonstrate that paddy soil fertility in the Philippines changed in many ways over this 50-year period, largely owing to the direct impact of GR implementation in paddy fields but also potentially due to offsite effects from upland fields. The environmental impact of the nutrient loss and soil organic matter degradation behind the fertility improvement should be assessed holistically for the sustainable development of rice paddy ecosystems. Artificial radionuclides including radiocesium (134 Cs and 137 Cs) and radiosilver (110mAg) were released into the environment following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident in March 2011. These particle-bound substances deposited on soils of north-eastern Japan, located predominantly within a ∼3000 km2 radioactive fallout plume and drained by several coastal rivers to the Pacific Ocean. The current dataset (Evrard et al., 2021), which can be accessed at 10.1594/PANGAEA.928594, compiles gamma-emitting artificial radionuclide activities measured in 782 sediment samples collected from 27 to 71 locations across catchments draining ∼6450 km2 during 16 fieldwork campaigns. These campaigns were conducted in Japan between November 2011 and November 2020 in river catchments draining the main radioactive plume. This database may be useful to evaluate and anticipate the post-accidental redistribution of radionuclides in the environment and for the spatial validation of models simulating the transfer of radiocesium across continental landscapes. Background: Surgical management has not been encouraged in patients with trisomy 18 (T18) and congenital heart diseases due to poor survival. This study aimed to investigate (1) the appropriateness of palliative surgeries followed by intracardiac repair (ICR) (i.e., two-stage ICR) for patients with a large ventricular septal defect (VSD) and T18, and (2) its impact on their long-term outcomes. Methods: Medical charts of patients with VSD and T18 who underwent two-stage ICR at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center between January 2005 and December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data, timing, and types of palliative surgeries, information related to ICR, peri- and postoperative clinical information, postoperative survival, and cause of death were collected. The long-term prognosis of patients treated with two-stage ICR was compared with that of patients treated with primary ICR and palliative surgery without ICR. Results: Overall, 18 (2 male, 16 female) patients underwent two-stage ICR. Pulmonary artery banding was the initial palliative surgery in all patients after a median duration of 19.5 (range 6–194) days of life. The median age and the mean body weight at the time of ICR were 18.2 (7.6–50.7) months and 6.0 ± 1.0 kg, respectively. The mean pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance index before ICR were 19.1 ± 7.3 mmHg and 3.4 ± 2.0 U m2, respectively. Overall, 17/18 (94%) patients were discharged after ICR. Fourteen (78%) patients were alive during data collection. None of the patients died of cardiac insufficiency, and the median duration of survival was 46.3 (14.3–186.4) months since birth. Most patients required cardiac medications rather than pulmonary vasodilators at the last follow-up. During the study period, three patients underwent primary ICR, and 46 underwent palliative surgery without ICR. Of those who underwent primary ICR, two died in the hospital on the first and 48th day following ICR, and the third died 179 days after the ICR. The Log-rank test revealed a significantly longer survival for the patients treated with two-stage ICR compared with those treated with palliative surgery without ICR (P = 0.003). Conclusion: Two-stage ICR improves the long-term survival of patients with VSDs and T18. This safe surgical strategy can also prevent pulmonary hypertension in such patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Remote‐access total endoscopic thyroidectomy (TET) is a recently established approach that can avoid producing scars in the neck. There are no clear surgical indications for TET for benign nodules or for malignant tumors at present. We report a successful TET in a 50‐year‐old Japanese woman with follicular lymphoma of the thyroid gland after an open neck biopsy. She had been referred to us with a neck tumor noted 2 months earlier. Because of adhesion, we performed a combined resection of the thyroid and partial right sternohyoid muscle. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other report of a TET performed after open neck surgery. Our patient's case demonstrates that (a) the cosmetic outcome of TET is clearly superior to that of conventional open neck surgery, and (b) a TET can be suitable even for reoperation if carefully selected. The current dataset that can be accessed at https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.928594 compiles gamma-emitting artificial radionuclide activities measured in 782 sediment samples collected from 27 to 71 locations during 16 fieldwork campaigns conducted in Japan between November 2011 and November 2020 in river catchments draining the main radioactive plume. This database may be useful to evaluate and anticipate the post-accidental redistribution of radionuclides in the environment and for the spatial validation of models simulating the transfer of radiocesium across continental landscapes. The objective of this study was to investigate the current soil properties in lowland paddy fields in Peninsular Malaysia and to assess the long-term changes in the soil fertility status during 50 years after the Green Revolution. Forty paddy fields were selected close to the study sites surveyed in 1965 and grouped based on six physiographic environments: the brackish swamp (including acid sulfate soils), the brackish alluvium, the freshwater swampand the riverine alluvium in the west coast, and the riverine alluvium and the beach ridges interspersed with swales in the east coast. Soil samples from the depth of 0–15 cm were analyzed for the physicochemical properties. Despite similar fertilizer application rates over Peninsular Malaysia, several differences were found in the current soil properties between different physiographic environments, such as 1) higher levels of clay fraction, 1.4 nm minerals, CEC, exchangeable bases and available Si as well as Mg- and Na-rich status in the brackish environments, 2) higher levels of available N in the riverine alluvium environment in the east coast , and 3) the excessive P accumulation in the acid sulfate soils. The long-term changes well appeared in the dramatic increase of P availability and the alleviation of soil acidity. In addition, the composition of exchangeable bases changed toward Ca-rich and Mg-low status. Large reduction in soil organic matter was found in the swamp environments while those in the riverine alluvium environment in the east coast were increased. It could be concluded that despite the successful increase in rice yield after the Green Revolution, the long-term changes in the paddy soil fertility showed positive and negative aspects depending on physiographic environments. Appropriate fertilizer application schemes taking into account different soil characteristics in different physiographic environments should be required to achieve both efficient, sustainable rice production and environmental conservation. Understanding of the long-term soil fertility trends is the basis for rational and sustainable management of the soil resources in agricultural fields. In tropical Asia, the Green Revolution initiated in the late 1960s contributed to a drastic increase in both food production and human population. Among the tropical Asian countries, Thailand is known as a rice-exporting country, but the country's rice yield is still relatively low. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effect of the Green Revolution on the changes in paddy soil fertility status in Thailand over the last 50 years. In total, 65 surface soil samples were collected in 2015 and 2016 from paddy fields in the northeast, north, central plain, and Bangkok Plain of Thailand. To compare the fertility-related data of the samples with those of soils collected from 1964 to 1972, the sampling sites in the 2010s were placed at or near the same locations of the original sites. Over the last 50 years, the mean pH, total C, total N, available N, available P, and exchangeable K values increased significantly (p < 0.01). In particular, the available P content dramatically increased from 3.19 to 42.8 mg kg–1, reflecting the rapid increase in fertilizer application. Contrarily, the mean exchangeable Mg and clay content values decreased significantly (p < 0.05). Regionally, the total C and total N contents of the soils in the northeast were significantly lower than those in the other regions (p < 0.05), and the available P, exchangeable K, and available Si contents were often evaluated as deficient, reflecting the very sandy texture of the soils. In conclusion, the fertility status of the paddy soil in Thailand has improved considerably over the last 50 years, and the increase in total C suggests the potential of paddy soil for C sequestration, even in the tropics. To evaluate the effects of type of micaceous mineral and degree of weathering on the ability to adsorb and desorb radiocaesium (RCs) ions, various levels of weathering were induced (K‐depletion) in three types of micaceous minerals: biotite, muscovite and illite. The ability to adsorb RCs was represented by RCs interception potential (RIP) and a desorption ratio was determined by the amount of 137Cs desorbed from the minerals by 1 M ammonium acetate (137Cs desorption ratio). The RIP values were in the order of illite > biotite > muscovite. The RIP values for biotite gradually increased with the release of up to ~50% of the K+ from interlayer sites but then decreased with the further release of K+, up to ~100%, which was associated with the formation of a fully expanded interlayer: vermiculite. The change from increasing to decreasing RIP due to the weathering of the biotite strongly indicated that the selective adsorption sites for RCs are not located in an expanded interlayer but in intermediate sites between non‐expanded and expanded interlayers: frayed edge sites (FES). In contrast, for both the muscovite and illite, the RIP only increased. The 137Cs desorption ratio, <7% for all the samples, tended to decrease with increasing degrees of weathering and did not differ greatly by mineral type. These results contribute to a more accurate prediction of the risk of RCs transfer from soils to crops and the understanding of the weathering processes of micaceous minerals in soils. Potassium (K) and radiocaesium (RCs) were chemically extracted from soils derived from granite (G soils) and sedimentary rock (S soils) in Fukushima, Japan. The extractants employed were 1 M HNO3, concentrated HNO3, and HF + HClO4. As S soils contain a lower amount of trioctahedral 2:1 phyllosilicates than G soils, the RCs/K ratio was higher in S soils than in G soils with 1 M HNO3 extraction, indicating that the potential risk of soil-to-plant transfer of RCs is higher in S soils than in G soils. To examine the exchangeability of 137Cs and K in soils of agricultural fields after decontamination, 173 soil samples were collected in 2016 from the plowed layer (0–15 cm depth) of decontaminated agricultural fields in Tomioka town, Fukushima prefecture, Japan. We investigated total 137Cs, exchangeable 137Cs, exchangeable K, and nonexchangeable K content for these soils. The total 137Cs content in soils was, on average, 1,200 Bq kg−1 (value range: 20–4,400 Bq kg−1), which was an 80% decrease from the values determined before the decontamination. This result indicated that the decontamination process considerably reduced the total 137Cs content in the plowed layer. The exchangeable K content in soils was on average 172 mg kg−1 (value range: 27.9 – 743 mg kg−1). More than 80% of soils showed the exchangeable K content lower than the recommended threshold value for paddy soils needed in order to reduce the 137Cs transfer from soil to plant (i.e. 200 mg kg−1). The nonexchangeable K content showed a wide range of values (value range: 98.8–1,280 mg kg−1) and no significant correlation with the exchangeable K content. Because nonexchangeable K is released more slowly but is comparable to exchangeable K as a reservoir of phytoavailable K, more frequent K application is recommended for soils with lower contents of both exchangeable and nonexchangeable K. The total 137Cs content in soils showed a significant positive correlation with the exchangeable K content in soils (p < 0.01), which means that decontamination efforts intended to reduce the total 137Cs content in soils might also lead to a reduction in the exchangeable K content. In conclusion, the application of K fertilizer is strongly recommended in the decontaminated agricultural fields because the decontamination causes a considerable decrease in exchangeable K content along with a reduction in total 137Cs content. The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in March 2011 resulted in the contamination of Japanese landscapes with radioactive fallout. Accordingly, the Japanese authorities decided to conduct extensive remediation activities in the impacted region to allow for the relatively rapid return of the local population. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the decontamination strategies and their potential effectiveness in Japan, focussing on particle-bound radiocesium. In the Fukushima Prefecture, the decision was taken to decontaminate the fallout-impacted landscapes in November 2011 for the 11 municipalities evacuated after the accident (Special Decontamination Zone – SDZ – 1117 km 2) and for the 40 non-evacuated municipalities affected by lower, although still significant, levels of radioactivity (Intensive Contamination Survey Areas, 7836 km 2). Decontamination activities predominantly targeted agricultural landscapes and residential areas. No decontamination activities are currently planned for the majority of forested areas, which cover ∼75 % of the main fallout-impacted region. Research investigating the effectiveness of decontamination activities underlined the need to undertake concerted actions at the catchment scale to avoid renewed contamination from the catchment headwaters after the completion of remediation activities. Although the impact of decontamination on the radioactive dose rates for the local population remains a subject of debate in the literature and in the local communities, outdoor workers in the SDZ represent a group of the local population that may exceed the long-term dosimetric target of 1 mSv yr -1. Decontamination activities generated ∼20 million m 3 of soil waste by early 2019. The volume of waste generated by decontamination may be decreased through incineration of combustible material and recycling of the less contaminated soil for civil engineering structures. However, most of this material will have to be stored for ∼30 years at interim facilities opened in 2017 in the vicinity of the FDNPP before being potentially transported to final disposal sites outside of the Fukushima Prefecture. Further research is required to investigate the perennial contribution of radiocesium from forest sources. In addition, the re-cultivation of farmland after decontamination raises additional questions associated with the fertility of remediated soils and the potential transfer of residual radiocesium to the plants. Overall, we believe it is important to synthesise the remediation lessons learnt following the FDNPP nuclear accident, which could be fundamental if a similar catastrophe occurs somewhere on Earth in the future. Background: In perinatal medicine, inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) has been an important tool for the treatment of full‐term and late‐preterm infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) and hypoxemic respiratory failure (HRF). Its use in more premature infants, however, is controversial. To evaluate the current clinical practices regarding use of acute iNO in extremely preterm infants, a nationwide survey was conducted in Japan. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted from May to September, 2015. Questionnaires about PPHN and iNO treatment were sent to the doctor in charge of the neonatal care unit in 213 perinatal medical centers (PMC) that possessed iNO equipment in Japan. Results: A total of 143 of the 213 PMC provided responses (67.1%). A diagnosis of PPHN was made exclusively on echocardiography in all PMC. On definitive PPHN diagnosis, iNO was selected in the majority of the PMC (72%) and started from ≤10 p.p.m. in most PMC (49.7%) for extremely preterm infants. During iNO therapy, cardiac function was checked on echocardiography by a neonatologist every ≤8 h. iNO weaning was started when differential peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) disappeared, or when SpO2 reached 100% and so on. After iNO concentration reached 5 p.p.m., it was decreased gradually and carefully in five steps, taking 12–24 h to go from 5 to 0 p.p.m. Conclusions: Inhaled nitric oxide was predominantly used in extremely preterm infants as early rescue therapy for PPHN based on echocardiography performed by a neonatologist. Abstract: We used two‐dimensional simulations to investigate the effects of a hydrous lithospheric mantle (HLM) on subduction dynamics. It was demonstrated that the thickness of a subducting HLM strongly controls the motion and deformation of converging plates. When the HLM thickness is lower than a critical value, for example, ∼5 km for a 100‐Ma slab, all serpentine in the HLM decomposes, and the liberated fluid enters the mantle wedge. The fluid weakens the overlying plate, causing trench retreat, rapid plate convergence, and slab stagnation. In contrast, when the HLM thickness exceeds the critical value, dense hydrous magnesium silicates appear in cold parts of the HLM at high pressures. The buoyant dense hydrous magnesium silicates reduce the slab pull force, weakening trench retreat, rapid convergence, and slab stagnation. A low HLM thickness may account for tectonics in some actual subduction zones characterized by trench retreat, rapid convergence, and stagnant slabs, for example, in Northeast Japan. The nonexchangeable potassium (neK) content of 178 agricultural soils in Japan was determined by subtracting the amount of K extracted with 1 mol L−1ammonium acetate, i.e., exchangeable K (exK) from that extracted with boiling 1 mol L−1HNO3. The statistical relationships between the neK content and physico-chemical properties of the soils were examined to investigate the factors controlling neK content. The neK content of agricultural soils in Japan ranged from 0 to 1120 mg kg−1with an arithmetic mean and median of 303 and 255 mg kg−1, respectively. It showed a significant positive correlation with the total K content, fixed ammonium content, and silt content (p < 0.01) and a significant negative correlation with Alo+1/2 Feo content and total carbon content (p < 0.01). These results suggest that the controlling factors of neK are mainly the total K content and 2:1 type phyllosilicates such as mica and vermiculite, with the indirect negative influence of organic matter and amorphous materials. Terrestrial Regosols, Brown Lowland soils, and Dark Red soils had relatively high neK contents. In contrast, Andosols, Wet Andosols, and Volcanogenous Regosols had relatively low neK contents. The neK content showed no significant correlation with exK content, suggesting that neK is a moderately to slowly available fraction of soil K, which is independent of exK. In conclusion, evaluation of nonexchangeable K in combination with exchangeable K would enhance the rational management of agricultural soils in terms of K fertility by taking account of longer term K-supplying power of soils. To evaluate the available silicon (Si) content in agricultural soils in Japan and to investigate the determining factors of this content, we collected 180 soil samples from the surface layer of paddies and upland fields in Japan and determined their available Si contents. A phosphate buffer (PB; 0.02 M, pH 6.9) or an acetate buffer (AB; 0.1 M, pH 4.0) was used to extract available Si from the soil samples, and the Si concentrations in the extracts were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emissions spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The total Si content and selected physicochemical properties were also determined for the soil samples. The median values of the available Si contents by the PB and AB methods were 48.8 and 79.7 mg kg−1and corresponded to 0.017% and 0.027% of the total Si content, respectively. The overall data showed log-normal distributions. The available Si content of the upland soils was significantly higher than that of the paddy soils by both the PB (p < 0.01) and AB methods (p < 0.05). The available Si contents by the PB and AB methods had a significant positive correlation (p < 0.01) and they had significant negative correlation with the total Si content (p < 0.01). The values of the available Si contents by the PB and AB methods correlated positively with the pH, total carbon (C) content, and dithionite-citrate bicarbonate extractable iron (Fed) and aluminum (Ald), acid oxalate extractable iron (Feo) and aluminum (Alo), Fed-Feo and Alo+1/2Feo values (p < 0.01). A multi-regression analysis indicated that pH, amorphous minerals and crystalline iron (Fe) oxides were the dominant determining factors of available Si in the soils, and these three variables explained approximately two thirds of the variation of available Si content in agricultural soils in Japan. In terms of soil type, Terrestrial Regosols, Dark Red soils and Andosols had relatively high available Si contents, whereas Sand-dune Regosols, Red soils and Gray Lowland soils had relatively low contents. In terms of region, the soils in the Kanto and Okinawa regions had relatively high available Si contents and those in the Kinki, Shikoku and Chugoku regions had relatively low contents. In conclusion, the available Si content and its determining factors for agricultural soils in Japan were quantitatively elucidated, and this will contribute to the establishment of rational soil management —including the application of silicate materials, taking into account the Si-supplying power of the relevant soils—for sustainable and productive agriculture in Japan. Background: Glycated albumin is a useful glycaemic control indicator for neonatal diabetes mellitus. However, glycated albumin concentrations in infants are lower than those in adults and increase in an age-dependent manner. Based on our investigation of non-diabetic subjects, we proposed the possibility that the reference range for adults may be used regardless of age, provided that age-adjusted glycated albumin is employed. In the present study, we evaluate the usefulness of age-adjusted glycated albumin in neonatal diabetes mellitus patients.Methods: Six neonatal diabetes mellitus patients (four patients with permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus and two patients with transient neonatal diabetes mellitus) were included. Measured glycated albumin or age-adjusted glycated albumin was compared to calculated glycated albumin, which was determined using calculation formulae we had reported based on past blood glucose over the 50 days before measurement of glycated albumin.Results: Measured glycated albumin was significantly lower than calculated glycated albumin (20.5 ± 4.9% versus 28.2 ± 6.1%; p < 0.0001), whereas age-adjusted glycated albumin was equivalent to calculated glycated albumin, showing no significant difference (27.5 ± 6.8% versus 28.2 ± 6.1%). Measured glycated albumin concentrations in patients with transient neonatal diabetes mellitus in remission were lower than the reference range for adults, whereas age-adjusted glycated albumin concentrations were within the reference range for adults.Conclusion: We demonstrated that age-adjusted glycated albumin concentrations were consistent with calculated glycated albumin. To evaluate the content of nitrogen (N) fractions of agricultural soils in Java, Indonesia, in relation to soil type and land use, 46 surface soil samples, 23 from paddy and 23 from upland, were collected throughout Java to include various types of soils. Soil N was separated into four fractions according to form and availability: inorganic extractable nitrogen (Iex-N), fixed ammonium nitrogen (Ifix-N), organic mineralizable nitrogen (Omin-N) and organic stable nitrogen (Osta-N). The total-N content was determined by the dry combustion method. The Iex-N content was determined by extraction with a 2 mol L−1potassium chloride (KCl) solution and the Ifix-N content by extraction with an hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid (HF-HCl) solution after removal of organic-N. The Omin-N content was evaluated as the potentially mineralizable N based on a long-term incubation method. The Osta-N content was calculated as the difference between the contents of total-N and the three other fractions. The total-N content was 2.06 g kg−1on average. The contents of Iex-N, Ifix-N, Omin-N and Osta-N were 25.8, 99.1, 103 and 1,832 mg kg−1, respectively, and corresponded to 1.3, 4.8, 5.0 and 88.9% of the total-N. Hence, available (Iex-N and Omin-N) and stable (Ifix-N and Osta-N) fractions accounted for 6.3% and 93.7% of the total-N, respectively. Correlation analysis indicated that the contents of total-N and Osta-N had positive correlation with (Alo + 1/2Feo) as an index of amorphous minerals (p < 0.01), suggesting strong influence of volcanic materials for the accumulation of organic matter in Java soils. The content of Ifix-N had a positive correlation with nonexchangeable potassium (K) content (p < 0.01), suggesting the contribution of 2:1 clay minerals which can fix both ammonium (NH4+) and K+in their interlayer sites. On the contrary, Omin-N did not have any significant correlation with soil properties, implying the importance of management for the improvement of the available N level in soils, rather than intrinsic soil properties. Soil N status further showed strong topographical trends depending on the elevation where soil developed. The contents of total N, Iex-N, Ifix-N, Omin-N and Osta-N in Java soils were on average 80, 69, 90, 65 and 80% of those in Japanese soils, respectively, suggesting that the soil N level in Java was lower than that in Japan, probably due to accelerated decomposition of organic matter, especially degradable fractions, reflecting high temperature, but that the level was relatively high for tropical soils due to the effect of volcanic materials. Recently, GATA6 heterozygous loss-of-function mutations were reported to cause pancreatic agenesis and congenital heart defects (PACHD [OMIM:600001]). However, the molecular mechanisms resulting from premature termination codons have not been examined in this disorder. The objective of this study was to perform a genetic analysis of a patient with PACHD. A female patient presented with ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and congenital diaphragmatic hernia at birth. Permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus and pancreatic exocrine deficiency due to pancreatic agenesis was diagnosed at 1 month of age. PCR-direct sequencing of GATA6 revealed that the patient is heterozygous for a novel de novo nonsense mutation of c.1477C>T, p. Arg493X in exon 5. RT-PCR direct sequencing of the RT-PCR products of total RNA from peripheral blood of the patient for the region encompassing exons 4-6 revealed only the wild-type allele. This finding provides the evidence for the occurrence of nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) in the p.Arg493X mutation. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that the expression of GATA6 transcript in the patient was less than half compared with normal control samples. This is the first evidence that GATA6 haploinsufficiency is caused by NMD in vivo, and we conclude that GATA6 haploinsufficiency causes not only PACHD but may affect other organs derived from the endoderm. Further screenings of GATA6 mutations in patients with various forms of diabetes and/or congenital heart disease with other visceral malformation may reveal the impact of GATA6 mutations on diabetes and congenital malformation. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cesium-137 (137Cs) is strongly adsorbed on clay minerals, especially on illite. The adsorption of Cs+on reference clay minerals, however, has not been fully investigated in relation to the presence of illite. The objective of this study was to clarify the effect of impurities (i.e., illite and vermiculite), present in reference smectite group minerals and kaolin minerals, on the retention of Cs+. The clay mineralogy of the reference minerals was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The radiocesium interception potential (RIP) was measured as an index of the Cs+retention ability of clays. The content of illite in clay was represented by the total potassium (K) content given that illite is a major source of K in the clay fraction. The content of vermiculite in clay was represented by the Cs fixation capacity induced by Cs saturation followed by heating of samples at 110°C. Metabentonite and beidellite gave extremely high RIP values compared with other smectite group minerals, although a peak for illite (at 1.0 nm) was not observed in XRD analysis. The reference smectite and kaolin minerals showed a range of RIP values, even though their RIP values are theoretically zero. The RIP values had a significant positive correlation with the total K content of all the reference clay minerals (rs = 0.621*). This indicated that the retention ability for137Cs depended more on the content of illite, as impurity, rather than the type of bulk mineral. The distribution coefficient of cesium (Cs) (KdCs) was investigated for clays which were collected from upland forest soils developed from granites and Paleozoic shales in Japan. They were divided into three size fractions, coarse (2.0–1.0 µm), medium (1.0–0.2 µm), and fine-clay fractions (<0.2 µm), abbreviated CC, MC, and FC, respectively. The KdCs value increased in the fractions as follows: FC < MC < CC in all the horizon samples. The amount of potassium (K) in the clay fractions also followed this same pattern. As the amount of K in the clay fraction can be a quantitative indicator of illitic minerals, the positive relationship between the KdCs and the amount of K indicated that the coarser clay fraction had a higher 137Cs adsorption potential due to containing higher amounts of illitic minerals. The soil clay fraction from the Paleozoic shales both contained a large amount of K and showed greater KdCs values than that of the granite when comparing the same particle sizes. Hence, the type of parent material can be a significant factor in determining the 137Cs adsorption potential of the soils. In all particle fractions, those collected from deeper in the profile had smaller KdCs values than those from closer to the soil surface in the same profile, although amount of K present was similar. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the hydroxy-aluminum (Al) polymer was present in the 2:1 interlayer sites to a greater extent in the clay fractions from deeper in the soil profile than in those from upper in the same soil profile. This result suggests that the hydroxy-Al polymers may be fixed at the expanded weathering front of the illitic minerals, blocking Cs adsorption on the frayed edge sites of these minerals. Thus, the KdCs value of the soil clays is determined by the degree of illitic minerals and hydroxy-Al interlayering present, with the larger the amount of illitic minerals the greater the Cs adsorption potential (with any hydroxy-Al interlayering reducing this effect). Radiocesium interception potential (RIP), a quantitative index of a frayed edge site of micaceous minerals, was investigated on test clay minerals (illite, kaolinite, montmorillonite and vermiculite) and soil clays formed under different pedogenetic conditions in the Kinki district of Japan and in northern Thailand to elucidate the effect of pedogenetic weathering on the amount of frayed edge site of micaceous minerals. A frayed edge site is defined as the wedge-shaped intermediate zone between non-expansible (1.0 nm) and hydrated (1.4 nm) interlayers, on which Cs is selectively adsorbed. The test clay minerals demonstrated unique RIP values closely associated with their charge characteristics. Very small RIP in non-micaceous test minerals (0.006 mol kg−1 in kaolinite; 0.1 mol kg−1 in montmorillonite) supported the fact that negative charges in these minerals do not show selective adsorption of 137Cs. Large RIP values in vermiculite (25.9 mol kg−1) compared with illitic minerals (4.3 mol kg−1 in silt size; 11.8 mol kg−1 in clay size) suggested that the frayed edge site increased as the expanded layer formed in the micaceous minerals. In northern Thailand soil clays, the absence of a vermiculitic expanded layer was indicated. Periodic wet–dry conditions may restrict K depletion from micaceous minerals in the region. It is concluded that micaceous minerals were weathered without layer expansion and, therefore, the amount of the frayed edge site was regulated by the content of micaceous minerals in northern Thailand. In Japanese soil clays, large RIP values were found in the EB and Bs horizons of a Podzodic profile (SW1), which had large vermiculitic expanded layers like the test vermiculite. However, the RIP values drastically decreased from the Bs to E horizon, maintaining a high vermiculitic layer charge. We developed a system for bioconverting diverse compounds using P450s produced in Escherichia coli. Vectors for the expressing various P450 cDNAs quickly and easily in E. coli were developed by using several restriction enzyme sites. Three types of P450 (2C2, 2C29, and 2D22) were produced using these plasmids. Substrates were directly added to the incubation medium and metabolized. To obtain pure product from the medium, we first tried production of P450 in synthetic medium. The amount of another P450 2C43 produced in the synthetic medium was similar to the amount produced in Luria broth (LB) medium. Next, estradiol, a steroid, was added as a substrate, incubated, and the metabolite was extracted and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The metabolite extracted from synthetic medium was purer than that obtained from LB medium. Three P450s (2C29, 2C2, and 2A4) metabolized testosterone at different positions. P450 2C29 metabolized 7-ethoxycoumarin, androstendione, and dehydroepiandrosterone in this medium. We report a case of alveolar capillary dysplasia, wherein duodenal atresia was diagnosed during the third trimester. A 36-year-old mother was referred to our hospital for polyhydramnios at 31 weeks’ gestation. Duodenal atresia was suspected from the ultrasonographic findings, which showed gastric dilation. Other findings noted were enlarged, highly echogenic lungs, a spherical heart and an increased lung–thorax transverse area ratio.A male infantwas born at 37 weeks’ gestation. The findings of serial radiography of the infant’s upper gastrointestinal tract were compatible with the diagnosis of duodenal atresia; however, he developed persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn eight hours after birth and died at five days of age. The autopsy revealed alveolar capillary dysplasia and duodenal obstruction. We propose that the detection of duodenal atresia should prompt the physician to conduct a thorough ultrasonographic examination to rule out associated anomalies, such as alveolar capillary dysplasia, which can be detected by the presence of highly echogenic lungs. Here, we investigate a possible scenario of surface seawater evolution in the numerical simulations of surface plate motion driven by mantle dynamics, including thermo-chemical convection and water migration, from the early to present-day Earth to constrain the total amount of water in the planetary system. To assess the validity of two hypotheses of the total amount of water inferred from early planetary formation processes and mineral physics, we examine the model sensitivity to the total water in the planetary system (both surface and deep interior) up to 15 ocean masses. To explain the current size of the reservoir of surface seawater, the predictions based on the numerical simulations of hydrous mantle convection suggest that the total amount of water should range from 9 to 12 ocean masses. Incorporating the dense hydrous magnesium silicate (DHMS) with a recently discovered hydrous mineral at lower mantle pressures (phase H) indicates that the physical mechanism of the mantle water cycle would not be significantly influenced, but the water storage region would be expanded in addition to the mantle transition zone.
