Oyster is an important fishing resource that is produced in coastal areas around the world. Over the past few decades, China's oyster aquaculture has flourished and is the world's largest in terms of production. As global problems of environmental pollution and resource depletion increase, the sustainability of industrial development is a growing concern. In recent years, there have been frequent incidents of regulatory sanctions against rapidly expanding oyster farms, showing that oyster aquaculture in China needs to recognize the current state of the industry, sort out development issues, and make timely adjustments. We selected Zhanjiang, one of the main oyster-producing areas in China, as the object of investigation, to analyze the data on oyster aquaculture in terms of area, production, farmers, mode, seedlings, and benefits, with the aim of figuring out the current status of the regional oyster aquaculture industry. Looking at the region as a whole, combining the current situation with the literature, it is concluded that China's oyster aquaculture industry suffers from insufficient sea resources suitable for culture, backward management and technology, high yield but low efficiency, etc. Considering the resource conditions of the main producing areas and the comprehensive benefits, oyster aquaculture still has much room for development. To ensure the sustainability of the industry, it is necessary to strengthen the management of sea areas, regulate farmers, increase technological innovation, and improve economic efficiency. Mariculture development has contributed to improving global food and nutrition security. This commentary reviews the importance of blue growth and the potential for aquaculture to fill the nutritional gap left by wild fisheries. On this basis, Chinese mariculture development was analyzed, focusing on five representative large-scale aquaculture practices over the past 60 years. The Chinese mariculture industry has moved from an extensive and low-efficiency development stage to an intensive and high-efficiency development stage; however, the development of the industry has been characterized by environmental and economic over-farming. From a policy perspective, to circumvent these two types of over-farming, more policies and actions by both the public sector and stakeholders are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the Thailand's National Strategy (2017-2036) and National Reform Plans, various tools, techniques, or methods are necessary to collect and investigate data for the effective preservation and protection of the country's natural resources. We aimed to apply various tools and methods for integrated coastal management in Thailand. This study used the InVEST models, including the habitat quality (HQ) and habitat risk assessment (HRA) models, to evaluate the natural habitat quality and cumulative human activity risk in the Sriracha district and Sichang Islands, Thailand. The HQ model revealed the presence of abundant ecological services and high quality natural habitats. We observed habitat degradation in the mooring zone, city area, forests, and coral reefs, with moderate risk to distinct habitats. Our findings identified two potential scenarios. Conservation scenarios exhibited a lower HRA ratio compared to current and development scenarios. Overall, the results showed the effectiveness of the InVEST model in evaluating habitat risk under both present and simulated conditions. The fisheries sector in developing countries, including Pakistan, faces various risks that have not been comprehensively studied and addressed through policy measures. This study aims to analyze fisheries' risks in Pakistan by following a risk management process and using statistical analysis. The data was collected through structured questionnaire surveys, and subsequently, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (fuzzy AHP) and importance performance analysis (IPA) were utilized to analyze the data. The study ranked the top five risks in order of importance as management, technical, economic, environmental, and occupational risks. The study also identified high-importance, low-performance sub-factors, including inadequate legislative implementation, overexploitation, and infrastructure shortages. It was found that there is low risk perception and inadequate management regulations in the sector. The findings suggest that risk management strategies, such as risk avoidance and risk transfer, can be used to mitigate fisheries' risks. The study highlights the need for policy measures to revitalize the fisheries sector in Pakistan and provides recommendations for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the country with the world's largest fishing capacity, China suffers from the depletion of living marine resources, mainly caused by overexploitation, the effects of which also distinctly influence global sustainable utilization of marine resources and maritime order. The country has implemented a series of measures to control its national fishing capacity, notably since the late 1980s, and strongly expressed its responsibility and commitment to sustainable resource utilization in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016–2020). This study quantitatively assesses the effect of China's fishing capacity management efforts by examining changes in the fishing capacity of marine capture fisheries by region from 1979 to 2019 in Chinese waters, based on window data envelopment analysis (DEA), and further proposes directions for policy adjustment. The results suggest that China's coastal and offshore fisheries are still subject to overcapacity of approximately 20%, despite major corrective efforts invested in past decades. This implies that China needs to further improve its fishing capacity management and set clear objectives, as determined by the availability of resources and regional features. Global fisheries management's focus is shifting from input to output control, but overcapacity still threatens the sustainable use of fisheries resources in China and poses obstacles to other systems. South Korea and China are located adjacent to Korea's West and South Seas and China's Yellow, Bohai, and East China Seas. These seas are semi-closed and are inhabited by many transboundary species. Korea and China signed a Fisheries Agreement in 2000, pledging cooperation for conservation in the Yellow and East China Seas. Discussions for collaborative fisheries management continued; however, competitive fishing has been occurring between them. Moreover, Korean and Chinese fisheries suffer overcapacity, deterioration, and decreased production. Accordingly, they strengthened the fisheries management of their own seas; however, issues continue to exist. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop more effective measures by evaluating and refining the existing system; fisheries management mainly focuses on fishing capacity control. Window-DEA is useful for analyzing the trend of efficiency over time and has been widely used as an evaluation tool for fisheries management measures, particularly fishing capacity. We comprehensively assessed the dynamic fishing capacity of the fishing ground shared by Korea and China per coastal region using Window-DEA for its sustainable development. Our results show the shared fishing ground has suffered from long-term overcapacity, which is expanding further with the intensification of fishing competition between the two countries, implying that the regime currently employed has inherent drawbacks because most naturally inhabiting fish species are transboundary and characterized by active ecological interactions. This study used a bibliometric analysis of 110 scientific papers published between 2002 and 2022 to overview the publication trends and growth potential of sustainable agricultural development assessment studies. The findings showed that the collaboration between authors and institutions was not strong, the journals published were relatively scattered, the coverage of disciplines was wide, more papers were published in higher impact journals, and the authors of the sample articles were mostly from Asian and European countries, the co-citation analysis pointed out more influential authors and journals. The temporal evolution of the keywords identified that researchers focused more on the sustainable operation of agriculture and the methods to assess the degree of sustainability initially, as research progressed and more scientific methods were applied, recent agricultural sustainability research focused on environmental impacts and economic efficiency. According to statistical analysis, the primary level is mostly carried out in three dimensions (economic, social, and environmental), with reference to this principle, this paper summarized the specific indicators appearing in the sample articles and divided them into three subgroups. The results showed that the indicators were selected from a wide range of sources, the entropy weight method and Analytic Hierarchy Process were the most frequent methods of assigning weights to indicators. The present study concludes that the sustainable agricultural development assessment studies are still immature, there is still much room for research on the application of sustainability assessment theory to agrarian systems. The paper adopts the conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) and bootstrap procedure to analyze the technical efficiency, while tobit regression is applied to identify the factors affecting efficiencies of exotic fish polyculture in Jammu and Kashmir (India). According to the statistical analysis of the variables utilized, there was a lot of variability in the inputs being used by the farmers, with the most variation being in the lime input. The DEA estimated technical efficiency for the sample farms in Jammu and Kashmir is 0.9771 and 0.9741, respectively, with least technical inefficiency of 3%. The bias-corrected (bootstrapped) technical efficiencies found were slightly lower than the ones estimated by conventional DEA. Mean allocative and cost efficiencies for sample farms in the Jammu region were 92% and 75%, respectively, and 84% and 74%, respectively, for farmers in the Kashmir region. Farming experience, age, and education have favorable impacts on technical efficiency of farmers in the state, but family size showed negative impacts. Efficiency improvement will eventually lead to increase in the production providing better scope for marketed surplus. The study aimed to highlight the profitability and production function analysis of Penaeus monodon and Litopenaeus vannamei in intensified shrimp farms in Gujarat (India). Two hundred and twenty (220) shrimp farm households were used to identify (principal component and cluster analyses) 8 clusters of management practices that reflected various scales of production intensity ranging from 0–2999 kg/ha/crop to 9000kg/ha/crop and above for both the species. The Cobb-Douglas production function, which relates production output to several independent input variables, was used to determine productivity. The budgeting analysis for both the species showed that more intensively managed farms performed more than the less intensive farm. Empirical results show feed as most significant input for Penaeus monodon and Litopenaeus vannamei seed and labor that affected production. Average net returns/ha/year for Penaeus monodon was $16313.13 and for Litopenaeus vannamei $41640.99. Aquaculture exhibited decreasing returns to scale for both the species and estimates on resource use efficiency revealed that in Penaeus monodon the resources were economically utilized and in case of Litopenaeus vannamei the output was likely to increase if more of seed and less of labor would have been used. This study aims to analyze the maximum sustainable yield of Cobia fish, and estimates its current status in Pakistani marine waters. For this purpose, catch and effort data (1996-2009) of R. canadum was analyzed with non-equilibrium surplus production models (SPMs) by using two fishery specialized software viz. CEDA and ASPIC. The maximum, minimum and average annual catch of R. canadum, over 14 years of the study period, was observed as 59,435 t (1997), 41,407 t (2005) and 50,951 t year-1 respectively. In CEDA, the three SPMs, Fox, Schaefer and Pella Tomlinson, with three error assumptions, i.e. log, log normal and gamma whereas in ASPIC two SPMs were used viz. Fox and Logistic. For CEDA, MSY was estimated by applying IP (initial proportion) or B1/K (starting biomass over carrying capacity) of 0.8 OR 0.9 as the initial catch was about 90% of the maximum catch. CEDA and ASPIC results indicate that MSY of this fishery resource is about 27,000 t to 30,000 t. However, catch statistics shows that R. canadum has been overexploited which must be controlled through effective fishery management to propose rational exploitation and sustainability. Pakistani marine waters are under an open access regime. Due to poor management and policy implications, blind fishing is continued which may result in ecological as well as economic losses. Thus, it is of utmost importance to estimate fishery resources before harvesting. In this study, catch and effort data, 1996-2009, of Kiddi shrimp Parapenaeopsis stylifera fishery from Pakistani marine waters was analyzed by using specialized fishery software in order to know fishery stock status of this commercially important shrimp. Maximum, minimum and average capture production of P. stylifera was observed as 15 912 metric tons (mt) (1997), 9 438 mt (2009) and 11 667 mt/a. Two stock assessment tools viz. CEDA (catch and effort data analysis) and ASPIC (a stock production model incorporating covariates) were used to compute MSY (maximum sustainable yield) of this organism. In CEDA, three surplus production models, Fox, Schaefer and Pella-Tomlinson, along with three error assumptions, log, log normal and gamma, were used. For initial proportion (IP) 0.8, the Fox model computed MSY as 6 858 mt (CV=0.204, R =0.709) and 7 384 mt (CV=0.149, R =0.72) for log and log normal error assumption respectively. Here, gamma error produced minimization failure. Estimated MSY by using Schaefer and Pella-Tomlinson models remained the same for log, log normal and gamma error assumptions i.e. 7 083 mt, 8 209 mt and 7 242 mt correspondingly. The Schafer results showed highest goodness of fit R (0.712) values. ASPIC computed MSY, CV, R , F and B parameters for the Fox model as 7 219 mt, 0.142, 0.872, 0.111 and 65 280, while for the Logistic model the computed values remained 7 720 mt, 0.148, 0.868, 0.107 and 72 110 correspondingly. Results obtained have shown that P. stylifera has been overexploited. This paper provides a critical review of some major efforts made by China to manage the fishing capacity of its marine capture fisheries. It begins by reviewing the key concepts and issues closely related to fishing capacity management. Following on this, a brief introduction to China’s marine capture fisheries is offered, especially the trends of its marine landings and marine fishing fleets and the status of fish stocks in waters under its jurisdiction. Next comes the main concern of the paper, i.e., some major actions recently initiated by China to deal with the overcapacity problem confronting it. The paper ends with conclusions and suggestions. The status of data-limited tuna fishery stocks in India has been tested using the latest and most advanced computerized methods, CMSY and BSM. Five tuna fish stocks from both the Eastern and Western Indian Ocean were assessed using both catch and catch per unit effort (CPUE) details available from 1990 to 2015. Both methods help to calculate the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and exploitation of MSY relative to biomass (B/BMSY). The results of maximum intrinsic rate (r) and carrying capacity are also estimated. The results revealed that all tuna stocks in both the regions were overfished, with one, the longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) in the Western Indian Ocean strongly overfished (B/BMSY = 0.44). Such observations, although still preliminary since the techniques used to produce them are relatively new, often associated with the situation and exploitation of all the stock in question, making the CMSY and BSM methods promising for stock assessment in data-deficit situations. This paper focuses on the difference in inter-group and intra-group price of Yesso scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) and the simulation accuracy of three different exponential smoothing models in the price. Based on the farm-gate price and wholesale price data of P. yessoensis in Changhai county from January 2017 to December 2018, this study uses the Wilcoxon rank sum test to compare the inter- and intra-group price and applies simple exponential smoothing (SES), Holt's linear trend method, and Holt-Winters' additive method to simulate and predict the price. The results suggest that (i) to improve economic benefits, it is necessary to formulate reasonable farming area and establish low-density ecological cultivation mode; (ii) the price's Akaike information criterion (AIC) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) values by the SES model are optimal, and the MAPE value is lower than 4%; and (iii) the result of SES analysis shows no obvious change from January to March 2019.
