Objective: Some patients with cancer admitted to palliative care have relatively long survivals of 1 year or more. The objective of this study was to find out factors associated with prolonged survival. Methods: Retrospective case-control study comparing the available data of patients with cancer who survived more than 1 year after admission in a palliative care service with patients with cancer who survived 6 months or less. The intended proportion was 4 controls for each case. Patients were identified through electronic records from 2012 until 2018. Results: And 1721 patients were identified. Of those patients, 111 (6.4%) survived for at least 1 year, and 363 (21.1%) were included as controls according to the established criteria. The intended proportion could not be reached; the proportion was only 3.3:1. The median survival of cases was 581 days (range: 371-2763), and the median survival of controls was 57 days (range: 1-182). In the multivariable analysis, patients with a hemoglobin ≥ 10.6 g/dL and a creatinine level >95 µmol/L had a higher probability of living more than 1 year. In contrast, patients with abnormal cognition, pain, anorexia, liver metastases, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status >1, and a neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio ≥ 3.43 had a low probability of living more than 1 year. Conclusion: Several factors were statistically associated positively or negatively with prolonged survival. However, the data of this study should be confirmed in other studies. Background and Purpose: Measuring nurses' perceptions of the activities contributing to the quality of care needs to be emphasized, providing visibility to professional practice and their contributions to achieving health quality. This study aimed to translate, validate, and culturally adapt the "Perception of Nursing Activities that Contribute to the Quality of Care" scale to provide a reliable instrument to assist nurse managers in measuring nurses' perceptions of their activities in French reality. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, in two phases, was conducted: first, by translation and cultural adaptation, and second, through the validation of the scale. Results: The factor structure of the final version was reduced to 22 items. Content and construct validity and reliability were supported by internal consistency (coefficient alpha =.913). Conclusions: The results show that the final version is a reliable and valid instrument, showing a high potential to be used in research and clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: It is essential to develop and improve instruments that measure and assess children's attitudes towards the elderly. Despite the degree of questions related to this topic, no tools validated for the Portuguese population on the subject were found in the literature. Consequently, this study aimed to translate and validate a scale designed to assess children's attitudes towards the elderly (Todaro Scale) for the Portuguese population. Design and methods: The method recommended by the literature for psychometric validation and evaluation of instruments was followed. In the conception of the study, the following stages were followed: translation of the "Todaro Scale", translation and back-translation by an independent translator, validation by an expert panel, pre-test and validation of the questionnaire, and testing the scale measurement properties. The convenience sample comprised 60 children between the ages of 4 and 6, of Portuguese nationality and residents of Portugal. Results: The results obtained in the reliability and validity tests reveal a good internal consistency. The 14 items of the scale, and after the use of principal component analysis, there were grouped into five dimensions: social participation, personality characteristics; Health and Safety, physical and instrumental; cognitive and social appreciation. Conclusions: The psychometric study confirms that the "Galvão Scale: children's attitudes towards the elderly" includes the essential indicators and dimensions to ensure an adequate assessment of children's attitudes towards the elderly. Practice implications: we believe this research could become an indispensable contribution to analysing, monitoring, and intervening to demystify existing ageing stereotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak disrupted markets and had a serious negative impact in economies across the world. Competition Authorities were at the forefront of initial public response measures through strong law enforcement and active market monitoring actions, temporary exemptions from competition provisions, merger control procedural adjustments and advocacy, an increasingly important function vis-à-vis Governments and all relevant stakeholders. Competition law and policy have therefore remained highly relevant during this period in both developed and developing countries. Current common challenges faced are raised by the increased digitalization of the economy and the dominance of digital platforms, especially considering the number and market share of micro and Small and Medium Sized enterprises (SMEs), the most seriously affected by the pandemic lockdown measures. Several jurisdictions and international organizations are equipping themselves with new legislation and instruments to address these challenges, namely supporting SMEs fair access to digital markets and promoting competitive public procurement, but less experienced and resource-constrained authorities of developing countries must prioritize otherwise. Competition advocacy is now more than ever a priority for them so that the economic recovery packages preserver open, fair, and equitable markets. International cooperation, bringing together developed and developing countries authorities, provides a crucial framework of support especially at this time. Background: Increased abdominal fat and sedentary lifestyles contribute to cardiovascular disease risk. The combination of exercise and low‐level laser therapy (LLLT) appears to be an innovative method to increase the lipolytic rate of abdominal adipocytes, in order to reduce abdominal fat. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of one session of aerobic exercise associated with abdominal laser therapy in lipolytic activity, profile lipid, and inflammatory markers (C‐reactive protein—CRP). Methods: Experimental randomized controlled study in 36 participants of female sex divided into three groups: placebo group (PG) (n = 12), experimental group 1 (EG1) (n = 11), and experimental group 2 (EG2) (n = 13). The EG1 and EG2 performed the laser therapy protocol followed by 50 minutes of aerobic exercise on cycle ergometer, of 45%‐55% of reserve heart rate; however, in EG2 the laser therapy was applied without power. The PG only performed the laser therapy protocol without power. The anthropometric measures were evaluated, and all participants were subject to blood samples at the beginning and at the end of the intervention for measure glycerol, lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL), and CRP. One‐way ANOVA was used to compare the groups in the quantitative variables and Fisher's test to compare the groups in the qualitative variables. To compare the variables between moments (M0 and M1), we used the t test for paired samples. Results: In the group that performed physical exercise and lipolytic laser and in the group that performs only physical exercise, there was a significant increase in glycerol mobilization between M0 and M1 (P <.001). The same did not occur in the placebo group. Regarding the CRP levels and lipidic profile, no significant differences were observed between moments in the experimental groups. Conclusion: It is concluded that one session of aerobic exercise associated with LLLT and one session of aerobic exercise appears to be able to increase the lipolytic activity. However, it appears that LLLT does not provide increased value to the aerobic physical exercise by itself in lipolysis process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Abdominal adiposity is a cardiovascular risk factor; it is assumed that the combination of radiofrequency and physical exercise may decrease this excess of adipose tissue. Purpose: To understand whether an aerobic physical exercise session associated with abdominal radiofrequency increases the level of lipolytic activity. Methodology: The study analyzes the effect of a combined aerobic exercise session with radiofrequency. Participants were 30 healthy female volunteers, aged 18‐28 years, randomly assigned to an experimental group and placebo group. They were characterized by a sociodemographic questionnaire, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Food Frequency Questionnaire. The groups performed an abdominal radiofrequency session followed by moderate aerobic exercise, assessing glycerol concentration and lipid profile values before and after the intervention. In the experimental group, a percentage of potency was used that allowed to maintain the temperature between 40º C and 42º C to the epidermis. In the placebo group, the power of the radiofrequency was 0 Watt. To compare results, Student's t test was used for a significance level of 0.05. Results: There were no significant changes in glycerol concentrations between groups (P > 0.05). There were no changes in the lipid profile of both groups after the intervention (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The association of exercise with radiofrequency did not present an increased effect on lipolytic activity when compared to the isolated exercise. Background/objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a short food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intake at 4 and 7 years of age, against 3d food diaries (FD) and serum biomarkers, using two methods to convert the FFQ to daily intake in grams and nutrients (standard and z-score method).Subjects/methods: The present analysis comprises data from 2482 4-year-old children and 3511 7-year-old children, from the birth cohort Generation XXI (Porto, Portugal). To estimate daily consumption from the FFQ, the frequency response was multiplied by a standard mean portion (standard method) or adjusted with data from the FD (z-score method). The dietary intake obtained from the FFQ was compared with the FD and serum biomarkers, using Intra-Class Correlation Coefficients (ICC), de-attenuated Pearson's correlation coefficients and Bland Altman analysis.Results: In general, the mean daily food intake estimated by the z-score method had a higher agreement with the FD, than the standard method. The highest ICC was obtained for "vegetable soup" (ICC = 0.536), using the z-score method, compared to an ICC of 0.373 using the standard method. Significant correlation coefficients were observed for all nutrients; the average of correlation coefficients was 0.39 at 4 years and 0.42 at 7 years of age. For the majority of nutrients, the correlation between mean and mean difference was lower using the z-score method, in comparison with the standard method.Conclusions: The results suggest that the FFQ is a reasonably good instrument to estimate dietary intake in children. Moreover, adjusting the FFQ portion size, by using a z-score method, seems to increase the accuracy of dietary data in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to describe dietary intake and dietary adequacy according to eating location in preschool children. A sub-sample of 2414 children from the Generation XXI birth cohort (Porto, Portugal), evaluated during the follow-up between 2009 and 2011, was included. Dietary intake was assessed by 3 d food diaries and four groups of children were defined according to the eating location: ‘Home’ ( ≥ 80 % of meals at home), ‘Other homes’, ‘Preschool’ and ‘Restaurants’. A dietary adequacy index was developed based on general recommendations for children; a higher score represents a better dietary adequacy. The comparison of nutrients and foods daily intake according to the eating location groups was performed by ANOVA and ANCOVA to adjust for potential confounders. Children classified in ‘Preschool’ group ate significantly more vegetables, fruit, bread and fish, and less meat, compared to children classified into the ‘Home’ group. Children classified in the ‘Restaurants’ group ate more cakes, salty snacks and fruit juices than children in ‘Home’ group; and less vegetables, dairy products and pasta/rice/potatoes. In ‘Restaurants’ children obtained the lowest mean score of the dietary adequacy index (15·5, 95 % CI 14·8, 16·3) and in ‘Preschool’ children had the highest mean score (18·3, 95 % CI 18·1, 18·4), corresponding to a better dietary adequacy. Preschools seem to have a relevant role in promoting the intake of healthy foods in preschool children. The consumption in restaurants/coffee shops seems to contribute to energy-dense food intake and reduced consumption of nutrient-dense foods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The way the work is made has been suffering in the last years countless changes related with the enormous increase and development of the use of new information and communication technologies in the work relationship. The theme of privacy and surveillance of the employer have been turning in a matter of considerable interest and surrounded of great controversy in the last years all around the world and Portugal is no exception. The technological innovation allows, through several instruments as the use of radio-frequency identification, the continuous surveillance and monitoring of the workers and new questions arise in the horizon. These new forms of control constitute powerful means of surveillance and of memorization, but also of analysis and of interference in the people' privacy, and one of the major challenges put today is the regulation of this new forms of control in the workplace because the advancement of modern technology has made it possible to collect and store information on a seemingly limitless scale, while also facilitating access to it. And the question that arises before the use of this technology is to know what limits should be established. And the answer is related, it seems, with the principles of data protection, mainly, in Portugal, article 17 of Portuguese Labour Code related to protection of personal data and also the Portuguese Data Protection Act, Law number 67/98, from 26th October, and, most of all, the legitimate principle, the proportionality principle and the transparency principle. The RFID has increase exponentially in the last years, with countless applications in different sections and with very different purposes, allowing to follow and control not only objects but also people, especially workers, what has been originating several problems and issues in Portuguese Labour Law related to the protection of workers' personal data and the surveillance by the employer. The world in general and Labour Law specifically has been suffering in the last years countless changes related with the enormous increase and development of the use of new information and communication technology in the Labour relationship. The use of new technologies of the Web 2.0, and most of all the use of online social networks led to the user to have a positive and active attitude interacting with others, abolishing the notions of time and space, and changed the Labour landscape. The internet and the e-mail, the use of online social networks like Facebook or Twitter, Orkut, Friendster, or Linkedin, the blogs, the forums, turned the control of the employer to a more and more present and intrusive one, affecting the workers' privacy and putting new questions to Labour Law, not only during the execution of the labor contract, but also previously in the hiring process and in the ending of the same. However, the workers don't leave behind their rights as persons (and certainly not their right to privacy and data protection) when they celebrate a labor contract. The use of information technology in the workplace has grown exponentially and surveillance and monitoring have become contentious issues in the modern workplace. The growth of information and surveillance technologies, closed-circuit television and video surveillance, biometrics, genetic and drug testing, monitoring employees location by GPS in their cars or even with the resource to RFID's technology, medical exams and information for hiring or retaining an employee and ownership ofpersonal information have raised unprecedented concerns about privacy. Background: Studies have shown that university/college students tend to have an exaggerated view of the quantities of alcohol being consumed by their peers. Making students aware of this misperception may help change behaviour and reduce problem drinking. Methods/Design: A Solomon Three Group Design will be used. There is one intervention group and two control groups, controlling separately for measurement and for intervention effects. Recruitment, consent, randomisation and data collection are all on-line. The primary outcomes are AUDIT Score, weekly consumption, perceived social norms, and alcohol related problems; secondary outcomes include alcohol expectancies and other health behaviours. Discussion: This trial will provide information on the effectiveness of an on-line personalized normative feedback intervention for alcohol misuse in university students. Background: Gingival invagination is a relatively common occurrence following orthodontic closure of extraction sites. The present paper reports a combined periodontal and orthodontic treatment in a patient with a severe gingivo-alveolar cleft due to orthodontic closure of maxillary central incisor extraction space. Methods: A definite interdental gingival cleft, extending 8 mm into the alveolar bone, required the correction of the gingival deformity as a first step, followed by guided bone regeneration (GBR). The GBR approach included the emptying of the incisive foramen to ∼5 mm in depth followed by the insertion of bioabsorbable hydroxyapatite and covering with a bioabsorbable barrier membrane. Sic months after ward, the orthodontic therapy was resumed. Results: Radiographs and clinical examination 4 years after the completion of therapy indicates functionally and aesthetically satisfactory and stable results. The article presents a case study of a 76-year-old diabetic male with a single kidney and hepatitis B virus Child-Pugh B cirrhosis. The patient undergone paracentesis in which ascitic liquid was removed and the albumin was replaced. Cyanoacrylate, an adhesive glue, was applied to the patient's puncture site. Oxygen per nasal cannula was used to allow the glue to dry at the site.
