Bluetongue (BT) is non-contagious, vector-borne viral disease of domestic and wild ruminants, transmitted by midges (Culicoides spp.) and is caused by Bluetongue virus (BTV). BTV is the type species of the Orbivirus genus within the Reoviridae family and possesses a genome consisting of 10 double-stranded RNA segments encoding 7 structural and 4 nonstructural proteins. Viral Protein 7 (VP7) is the major sera group-specific protein and is a good antigen candidate for immunoenzymatic assays for the BT diagnosis. In our work, BTV-2 recombinant VP7 (BTV-2 recVP7), expressed in Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells using a baculovirus system, was produced and purified by affinity chromatography from the supernatant of infected cell culture. The use of the supernatant allowed us to obtain a high quantity of recombinant protein with high purity level by an easy one-step procedure, rather than the multistep purification from the pellet. The role of resident or migratory birds in dispersal of tick species and tick-borne pathogens is still poorly known in Italy. We report here the results of a 3-year project based on sampling ticks from migratory birds, as well as from the vegetation at three stop-over sites for migrants, namely the islands of Ventotene (Latium), Asinara (Sardinia) and Ustica (Sicily). During the spring seasons from 2017–2019, in total 2681 ticks were collected, 2344 of which were sampled from migratory birds and 337 from the vegetation. Ticks were identified by morphology or by molecular tools when necessary. In total, 16 tick species were identified among which the following were exclusively found on birds: Hyalomma rufipes (43.3%), Hy. truncatum (0.1%), Ixodes frontalis (11.8%), Ix. inopinatus (0.2%), Ix. ricinus (3%), Haemaphysalis punctata (0.08%), Hae. erinacei (0.1%), Amblyomma variegatum (0.08%) and Argas vulgaris 0.1%), whereas five species were exclusively collected from the vegetation: Rhipicephalus bursa (10.5%), Rh. turanicus (5.9%), Rh. sanguineus sensu lato (2%), Rh. pusillus (2.4%), Hae. sulcata (0.08%). Hy. marginatum (10.3%) and Ix. ventalloi (9.3%) were found both on birds and on the vegetation on the island Ustica. It is worth noting that the search for ticks on the vegetation did not detect allochthonous tick species. Although we found several interesting local species and allochthonous ticks like Hy. rufipes, Am. variegatum and Ar. vulgaris on birds, further investigations are needed to better define the possible role of migratory birds in the introduction of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Italy, above all after the evidence of imported ticks positive to Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus in several European countries. Sensitive millimeter wave diagnostics in magnetic confinement plasma fusion experiments need protection from gyrotron stray radiation in the plasma vessel. Modern electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) systems take advantage of multi-frequency gyrotrons. This means that the frequency band of some millimeter wave diagnostics contains more than one narrow-band gyrotron-frequency line, which needs to be effectively suppressed. A compact standard waveguide notch filter based on coupled waveguide resonators with rectangular cross-section is presented which can provide very high suppression of several gyrotron frequencies and has low insertion loss of the passband. The electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system of the ASDEX Upgrade tokomak has been upgraded over the last 15 years from a 2MW, 2 s, 140 GHz system to an 8MW, 10 s, dual frequency system (105/140 GHz). The power exceeds the L/H power threshold by at least a factor of two, even for high densities, and roughly equals the installed ion cyclotron range of frequencies power. The power of both wave heating systems together (>10MW in the plasma) is about half of the available neutral beam injection (NBI) power, allowing significant variations of torque input, of the shape of the heating profile and of Qe/Qi, even at high heating power. For applications at a low magnetic field an X3-heating scheme is routinely in use. Such a scenario is now also forseen for ITER to study the first H-modes at one third of the full field. This versatile system allows one to address important issues fundamental to a fusion reactor: H-mode operation with dominant electron heating, accessing low collisionalities in full metal devices (also related to suppression of edge localized modes with resonant magnetic perturbations), influence of Te/Ti and rotational shear on transport, and dependence of impurity accumulation on heating profiles. Experiments on all these subjects have been carried out over the last few years and will be presented in this contribution. The adjustable localized current drive capability of ECRH allows dedicated variations of the shape of the q-profile and the study of their influence on non-inductive tokamak operation (so far at q95 > 5.3). The ultimate goal of these experiments is to use the experimental findings to refine theoretical models such that they allow a reliable design of operational schemes for reactor size devices. The reaction mechanism and the impact of microstructure on performances for a porous LSCF‐CGO composite used as O2 electrode in SOCs have been investigated. For this purpose, an integrated approach coupling (i) electrochemical testing, (ii) advanced 3D characterizations, and (iii) modeling was proposed. In this frame, a symmetrical cell was tested in a three‐electrode setup and the microstructure of the LSCF‐CGO working electrode was reconstructed by FIB‐SEM tomography. The experimental polarization curves and the impedance diagrams along with the extracted microstructural parameters were used to validate an in‐house microscale electrochemical model. This model considers two parallel reaction pathways with (i) an oxidation/reduction at TPBls (surface path) and (ii) an oxygen transfer at the gas/LSCF interface (bulk path). It was shown that the LSCF‐CGO electrode reaction mechanism is mostly controlled by the charge transfer at TPBls whatever the polarization. Finally, the impact of electrode composition, porosity and particles size on the cell polarization resistance was investigated by using the electrochemical model in combination with a large dataset of synthetic microstructures generated by a geometrical stochastic model. Four goats were inoculated with an inactivated peste des petits ruminants virus ( PPRV) vaccine. Three unvaccinated goats were kept as controls. After 36 days, the four goats were revaccinated. The immune response was monitored by virus neutralization test showing that two doses of the vaccine were able to stimulate strong immune response in all the vaccinated animals. The vaccinated goat and the controls were challenged with virulent PPRV intranasally. After PPRV challenge, the three control goats showed fever, viremia and virus excretion through mucosal surfaces, whereas the vaccinated goats were fully protected against PPRV infection and replication. West Nile virus (WNV) circulation dynamics in the context of the urban environment is not yet elucidated. In this perspective, three groups of eight rock pigeons (Columbia livia) were inoculated with three WNV lineage 1 strains isolated in Italy between 2009 and 2012. The pigeons did not develop any clinical signs consistent with WNV acute infection. All animals seroconverted and shed virus up to 15 days post-infection by the oral or cloacal routes. In all infected groups viraemia lasted for 4 days post-infection. No WNV-specific gross or histological lesions were found in infected birds compared to control birds and immunohistochemistry remained constantly negative from all tissues. The reservoir competence index was also assessed and it ranged between 0·11 and 0·14. This study demonstrates that pigeons are competent reservoir hosts for Italian WNV lineage 1 circulating strains thus potentially posing a risk to the public health system. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The upgraded electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) has been routinely used with eight gyrotrons during the last experimental campaign. A further upgrade will replace the existing system of four short-pulse (140 GHz, 2 s, 500 kW) gyrotrons. The final goal is to have around 6.5-7 MW at 140 GHz (or 5.5 MW at 105 GHz) from eight units available in the plasma during the whole AUG discharge (10 s). The system operates at 140 and 105 GHz with X2, O2 and X3 schemes. For B > 3 T also an ITER-like O1-scenario can be run using the 105 GHz option. Objective: To establish whether chronic alcoholism and alcohol consumption are risk factors for developing a first symptomatic epileptic seizure.Methods: Multicentre case-control study of 293 patients (160 men, 133 women) with a first seizure symptomatic (either acute or remote) of head trauma, stroke, or brain tumour, matched to 444 hospital controls for centre, sex, age (+/-5 years), and underlying pathology.Results: The risk of first seizure in alcoholics was no higher than in non-alcoholics for men (odds ratio 1.2, 95% confidence interval 0.4 to 3.2) or women (1.5, 0.1 to 54.4). The odds ratio (both sexes) was 1.2 (0.8 to 1.7) for an average intake of absolute alcohol of 1-25 g/day, 0.9 (0.5 to 1.5) for 26-50 g/day, 1.6 (0.8 to 3.0) for 51-100 g/day, and 1.4 (0.5 to 3.5) for >100 g/day.Conclusions: We found no evidence of an association between alcohol use or alcoholism and a first symptomatic seizure. In 2013, the circulation of West Nile virus (WNV) was detected in the Lombardy region and the following year a surveillance programme was activated with the aim of early identification of the viral distribution in mosquitoes and wild birds. A total of 50 959 Culex spp. mosquitoes grouped in six hundred and forty-seven pools as well as 1400 birds were screened by RT-PCR for the presence of West Nile virus leading to the identification of the viral genome in 32 mosquito pools and 13 wild birds. The surveillance was able to detect the WNV circulation on an average of 42 days (CI 95% 29.98-53.86; Student's t-distribution) before the occurrence of human West Nile disease (WND) cases in the same area. These results demonstrate the presence of WNV in the Lombardy region and confirm entomological and wild birds surveillance as an effective measure for the early identification of WNV circulation in infected areas, thus providing a useful and cost-effective tool for the public health authorities in the application of measures to prevent human infection. A duplex real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (q RT- PCR) assay was developed for a simple and rapid diagnosis of Peste des petits ruminants ( PPR). q RT- PCR primers and Taq Man probe were designed on a conserved region of nucleocapsid protein ( Np) of PPR virus ( PPRV) genome. An in vitro transcript of the target region was constructed and tested to determine analytical sensitivity. Commercial heterologous Armored RNA® was used as an internal positive control ( IPC) for either RNA isolation or RT- PCR steps. The detection limit of the newly designed duplex real-time RT- PCR (q RT- PCR PPR_ Np) was approximately 20 copies/ μl with a 95% probability. No amplification signals were recorded when the q RT- PCR PPR_ Np was applied to viruses closely related or clinically similar to PPRV- or to PPR-negative blood samples. A preliminary evaluation of the diagnostic performance was carried out by testing a group of 43 clinical specimens collected from distinct geographic areas of Africa and Middle East. q RT- PCR PPR_ Np showed higher sensitivity than the conventional gel-based RT- PCR assays, which have been used as reference standards. Internal positive control made it possible to identify the occurrence of 5 false-negative results caused by the amplification failure, thus improving the accuracy of PPRV detection. This study reports the monitoring of several emerging viral pathogens in Mauritania, which was carried out by the analysis of bovine and camel samples taken at the slaughterhouse of Nouakchott. Blood and serum were collected by random sampling from 159 camels and 118 cattle in March 2013 at the large animals abattoir in Nouakchott. Serological tests for Rift Valley Fever (RVF), Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), West Nile disease (WND), epizootic haemorrhagic disease (EHD) and African horse sickness (AHS) were carried out using commercial ELISA kits. The samples, which resulted positives for PPR, WND and AHS, were tested with the confirmatory virus neutralization test (VNT). According to ELISA results, serological prevalence of RVF was 45% (95% CI 52.3–37.7) in camels and 16% (95% CI 22.6–9.4) in cattle. The difference between the observed prevalences in camels and in cattle was significant (p value ≤ 0.01). PPR was absent in camels and had 12% prevalence (95% CI, 17.86–6.14) in cattle. Furthermore, camels showed 92% (95% CI, 96.1–87.9) prevalence of WNV, 73% (95% CI, 82.3–63.64) of EHD and 3% (95% CI, 5.6–0.4) of AHS. This data are of relevance since provided useful feedbacks on the circulation of the pathogens in field. The recent outbreak caused by Schmallenberg virus, which affected sheep, goats and cattle in Europe, highlighted the importance of having a robust surveillance plan capable of monitoring abortions and malformations in the livestock offspring. In this context, bluetongue viruses ( BTVs) represented and represent one of the major threats to the European livestock industry. Aiming to improve the understanding on BTV cross placental transmission and serotype involvement, in this retrospective study foetal spleens and/or brains of 663 ovines, 429 bovines, 155 goats and 17 buffaloes were tested for the presence of BTV by virus isolation. BTV vaccine strains were isolated from 31 foetuses (2.4%; 95% CI: 1.7-3.4%): 24 (3.6%; 95% CI: 2.4-5.3%) from ovine foetal tissues; 6 (1.4%; 95% CI: 0.6-3.0%) from bovine foetal tissues and 1 (0.6%; 95% CI: 0.2-3.5%) from the spleen of a caprine foetus. All foetuses were from animals vaccinated with either BTV-2 or BTV-2, and BTV-9 modified live vaccines ( MLVs) produced by Onderstepoort Biological Products ( OBP), South Africa. Among the 31 isolated vaccine strains, serotype 9 ( n = 28) was more frequently isolated ( P < 0.05) than serotype 2 ( n = 3). In two cases infectious vaccine strains were found in the foetal tissues 2 months after the vaccine administration. Other pathogens known to be causative agents of abortion in ruminants were not detected nor isolated. This study demonstrates, for the first time, that BTV-2 and BTV-9 vaccine strains are able to cross the placental barrier of sheep, cattle and goats. West Nile virus (WNV) strains belonging to lineage 2 were detected and isolated from the tissues of a goshawk and two carrion crows in Sardinia in August 2012. According to NS3 sequence analysis, the Sardinian isolates shared a high level of similarity with those of Italian lineage 2 strains which circulated in 2011 and with the homologous sequence of the 2004 Hungarian isolate. Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the resulting containment measures, such as "lockdown" and "social distancing", have had important consequences on people's mental and physical health. Objectives: We aimed to study the effect of social isolation and subsequent re-exposure and eventual changes in general and ED-specific psychopathology in people with Eating Disorders (EDs). Methods: Three-hundred twelve Italian people with EDs (179 Anorexia Nervosa, 83 Bulimia Nervosa, 48 Binge Eating Disorder and 22 Other Specific Feeding Eating Disorder) were asked to fill-in an online survey to explore several dimensions such as: anxiety, depression, panic, insomnia, suicide ideation, stress, post-traumatic stress and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Differences in ED specific and general symptoms among the 3 investigated time periods (before, during and after the end of lockdown) were assessed with a one-way ANOVA with repeated measures. Subsequently, ED diagnosis was introduced as covariate in the analysis in order to investigate the possible contribution on psychopathological changes. Results: ED core symptoms increased during the lockdown but most of them returned to pre-COVID19 levels at re-opening. The severity of general psychopathology also increased during the lockdown and persisted high in the following phase, except for depression and suicide ideation. None of this symptoms was affected by ED diagnosis, participants'age and illness duration. Conclusions: People with EDs showed worsening of both general and specific psychopathology; moreover, changes in general psychopathology persisted in the re-opening period suggesting a higher stress vulnerability in this kind of patients. Background. Growth arrest specific gene 6 (Gas6) protein enhances survival of oligodendrocytes and neurons, and it is involved in autoimmunity. Therefore, we aimed to verify whether cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) Gas6 concentration may represent a biomarker of disease activity in multiple sclerosis. Methods. Sixty-five patients who underwent a spinal tap during relapse of relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS)(McDonald-criteria) were studied. Forty patients affected by noninflammatory/nonautoimmune neurological diseases served as controls. Relapse was defined according to Schumacher criteria. Symptoms were grouped according to Kurtzke-Functional System (FS). Clinical characteristics of the relapse, duration, Expanded-Disability-Status Scale (EDSS) change, number of FS involved, completeness of recovery, age, steroid therapy, were categorised. Patients were followed at 6-month intervals to assess relapse rate and EDSS progression. Gas6 was measured (CSF, plasma) by in-house-enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Results. Higher CSF Gas6 concentrations were observed in relapses lasting ≤60 days (8.7 ± 3.9 ng/mL) versus >60 days (6.5 ± 2.6) or controls (6.5 ± 2.4; P = 0.05), with ≤2 FS involved (8.5 ± 3.8) versus >2 FS (5.6 ± 2.5) (P < 0.05) and EDSS change ≤2.5 points (8.8 ± 3.7) versus >2.5 (6.5 ± 3.5) (P = 0.04). Conversely, CSF Gas6 was not predictive of the completeness of recovery. Plasma and CSF concentrations were not related (R² = 0.0003), and neither were predictive of relapse rate or EDSS progression after first relapse. Conclusions. Migratory birds are considered one of the main sources for West Nile virus (WNV) introduction into European countries. Following the WNV epidemic in the late summer of 1998 in a marshy area of Tuscany (Padule of Fucecchio), an extensive ornithological surveillance programme was carried out in the infected areas from 2006 to 2008. Several species of migratory and resident birds were trapped, sampled and serologically tested. The results of this surveillance programme gave a useful indication of potential sources of WNV re-introduction and spread into Italy. The area under study was also investigated and classified into ecological areas through satellite image processing. In August 2008, the WNV infection re-emerged in Italy in the area surrounding the Po river delta, involving three regions: Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto. Several surveillance activities were immediately put in place, including the extensive monitoring of wild birds found dead or trapped in the framework of other surveillance programmes. These activities were also prolonged in the 2009, when the virus circulation re-occurred at the border of the area already infected in 2008. The possible epidemiological role of the different species of migratory and resident birds is discussed, in relation to the different ecological patterns identified in the area and their potential ability to introduce, spread and support the endemization of WNV infection. Objectives: To evaluate the role of 5-HTTLPR, STin2 VNTR, and rs1042173T>G polymorphisms of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) as susceptibility factors for medication overuse headache (MOH) and to assess their value as predictors of the number of headache days per month, a potential marker of disease severity. Methods: Genotyping was performed by PCR and PCR-RFLP on genomic DNA extracted from peripheral blood of 227 MOH patients and 312 control subjects. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between the SL6A4 gene polymorphisms and MOH risk. The association between polymorphic variants and monthly headache days was evaluated by linear regression analysis. Results: Logistic regression analysis, adjusted for age and gender, revealed a nominal association between rs1042173T>G and MOH risk (TT vs. TG + GG, OR: 1.58 95% CI: 1.05-2.37, P = 0.028). In the linear regression analysis adjusted for age, gender, primary headache diagnosis, acute drug overused and monthly drug number, STin2 VNTR was found nominally associated with monthly headache days (12/12 vs. others, difference: 1.55 days, 95% CI: 0.01-3.08, P = 0.050). When STin2 VNTR and rs1042173T>G were analyzed in haplotypic combination, a global haplotype association emerged with monthly headache days which remained significant after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons (global haplotype association P = 0.0056). Conclusion: Although a minor contribution of SLC6A4 variants in the genetic liability of MOH cannot be excluded, haplotype-based analysis of STin2 VNTR and rs1042173T>G polymorphisms allowed to identify a subgroup of MOH patients with a higher number of monthly headache and, possibly, with a more severe disease. The paper focuses on the strong motion array deployed in the upper Aterno River Valley, in the immediate outskirts north-west of the town of L'Aquila, which is part of the Italian Strong Motion Network operated by the Department of Civil Protection. The array is composed of six accelerometric stations located along a cross section of the valley. The importance of this array relies on the fact that a large amount of high-quality records were obtained during the 2009 L'Aquila seismic sequence, from both the mainshock and several aftershocks. These data are especially important to investigate site effects in sediment-filled valleys during moderate earthquakes in epicentral area because well-documented observational studies are very limited in the literature. However, the main drawback for the study of site effects in the Aterno valley is the lack of a detailed knowledge of the geometry of the valley, soil layering and dynamic properties of materials. The main motivation for this study stems from the need to provide a reliable subsoil model of the valley coupled with high-quality strong motion data. Based on the above, in the framework of S4 project, a major effort was undertaken to get a trustworthy cross section of the valley by an ad hoc investigation, comprising geological and geotechnical surveys as well as an extensive geophysical campaign, characterized by both active and passive measurements. These results were complemented by additional geological and geotechnical data available in the literature. By merging all the information acquired, a 2D subsoil model of the transversal section of the upper Aterno valley has been produced. The valley is characterised by an asymmetric shape with a shallower rock basement at the western edge of the valley that deepens at the valley centre. Moreover, based on the results of geophysical tests, representative V values were assigned to the different lithologic units forming the alluvial deposits filling the valley. Shear wave velocity is a fundamental parameter for ground response studies and it is also effective in classifying the accelerometric station from a seismic point of view. The 2D model may be therefore, considered a benchmark model for future studies of site effects. It will offer the possibility to examine site effects with a complex underlying geology and to validate the results of numerical simulations of site response analyses with the numerous observations from earthquake recordings, both for weak and strong ground motion conditions. The association of Moyamoya disease (MD) with other cerebrovascular disease has been reported in literature but not the occurrence of MD and arteriovenous fistula of the epiaortic vessels. A 61-year old Italian woman was admitted to our Department because of the sudden onset of Broca’s aphasia. At general examination she presented a murmur above the right clavicle. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an ischemic lesion involving left frontal and temporal lobes. Cerebral digital subtraction angiography (DSA) showed moyamoya vessels and an arteriovenous fistula between vertebral artery and internal giugular vein in right laterocervical region. Objective.--The aim of the present study was to evaluate a possible involvement of 2 polymorphisms of the serotonin 5HT2A receptor gene (A-1438G and C516T) as risk factors for medication overuse headache (MOH) and whether the presence of these polymorphic variants might determine differences within MOH patients in monthly drug consumption.Background.--Despite a growing scientific interest in the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of MOH, few studies have focused on the role of genetics in the development of the disease, as well as on the genetic determinants of the inter-individual variability in the number of drug doses taken per month.Methods.--Our study was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism on genomic DNA extracted from peripheral blood of 227 MOH patients and 312 control subjects. Genotype-specific risks were estimated as odds ratios with associated 95% confidence intervals by unconditional logistic regression and adjusted for age and gender. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was employed to identify significant predictors of the number of drug doses taken per month.Results.--No significant association was found between 5HT2A A and 1438G and C516T gene polymorphisms and MOH risk. In contrast, a higher consumption of monthly drug doses was observed among 516T 5HT2A carriers (median 50, range 13-120) compared to 516CC patients (median 30, range 12-128) (Mann-Whitney U-test, P = .018). In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, C516T 5HT2A polymorphism (P = .018) and class of overused drug (P = .047) emerged as significant, independent predictors of the monthly drug consumption in MOH patients.Conclusions.--Although our results do not support a major role of the A-1438G and C516T polymorphic variants of the 5HT2A gene in the susceptibility of MOH, our findings support an influence of the C516T polymorphism on the number of symptomatic drug doses taken and, possibly, on the drug-seeking behavior in these patients. In August 2008, West Nile disease re-emerged in Italy. The infection is affecting the North Eastern regions and, as of November 2008, has caused 33 clinical cases and five fatalities in horses. Until now, no deaths have been reported in birds. Mosquitoes, blood, serum and tissue samples, from horses and birds, within and around the outbreak area, have been collected and tested by various methods both serologically and virologically. West Nile virus strains have been isolated from blood samples of one horse and one donkey and from pools of brain, kidneys, heart and spleen of a pigeon and three magpies. When compared to the strain isolated during the 1998 Tuscany outbreak, the 255 bp sequence of the genome region coding for the envelope (E) protein of the isolated WNV strains, exhibited a 98.8% and 100% similarity at nucleotide and amino-acid level respectively. Progranulin (GRN) gene variability has been analyzed in a sample of 354 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) compared with 343 controls. No significant differences were observed, but by stratifying according to MS subtypes, a significant increased frequency of the rs2879096 TT genotype was found in primary progressive MS (PPMS) patients versus controls (16.0 vs 3.5%, P=0.023, odds ratio (OR) 5.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2–21.4). In addition, in PPMS, an association with the C allele of rs4792938 was observed (55.3 vs 33.5%, P=0.011, OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.2–4.7). An independent population was studied as replication, failing to confirm results previously obtained. Stratifying according to gender, an association with rs4792938 C allele was found in male PPMS patients compared with controls (40.7 vs 26.9%, P=0.002, OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.2–2.8). An association with the rs2879096T allele was observed (29.2 in patients compared with 18.9% in controls, P=0.012, OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.1–2.8). Haplotype analysis showed that TC haplotype frequency is increased in PPMS male patients compared with male controls (25.7 vs 16.6%; P=0.02, OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.1–2.7), whereas the respective GC haplotype seems to exert a protective effect, as its frequency is decreased in patients compared with controls (55.8% vs 70.9%; P=0.001, OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.4–0.8). After 10 years, West Nile virus (WNV) re-emerged in Italy in August 2008. As on 31 December 2008, the infection affected eight Provinces in three Regions (Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Lombardy), where a total of 794 cases of WNV infection in 251 equine stables were detected on the basis of the clinical signs and as a result of a serological screening in horses living in the area. Only 4.0% (32/794) of the serologically positive animals showed clinical signs, and the 32 clinical cases were reported in 18 different farms. The observed case-fatality rate was 15.6% (5/32). The confirmed clinical cases were detected from end August to mid October. Significant levels of positivity by RT-PCR were also observed in magpies ( Pica pica) (9.1%, 95% confidence levels: 6.1–13.4%), carrion crows ( Corvus corone) (7.4%, 95% confidence levels: 3.6–14.4%) and rock pigeons ( Columba livia) (12.9%, 95% confidence levels: 7.6–21.2%). Previous studies reported an association with multiple sclerosis (MS) of distinct HLA-class I markers, namely HLA-A*02, HLA-Cw*05 and MOG-142L. In this work, we tested the association with MS of A*02 and Cw*05 in 1273 Italian MS patients and 1075 matched controls, which were previously analyzed for MOG-142, and explored the relationship among these three markers in modulating MS risk. HLA-A*02 conferred a statistically robust MS protection (odds ratio, OR=0.61; 95% confidence intervals, CI=0.51–0.72, P<10−9), which was independent of DRB1*15 and of any other DRB1* allele and remained similar after accounting for the other two analyzed class I markers. Conversely, the protective effect we previously observed for MOG-142L was secondary to its linkage disequilibrium with A*02. Cw*05 was not associated considering the whole sample, but its presence significantly enhanced the protection in the HLA-A*02-positive group, independently of DRB1: the OR conferred by A*02 in Cw*05-positive individuals (0.22, 95% CI=0.13–0.38) was significantly lower than in Cw*05-negative individuals (0.69, 95% CI=0.58–0.83) with a significant (P=4.94 × 10−5) multiplicative interaction between the two markers. In the absence of A*02, Cw*05 behaved as a risk factor, particularly in combination with DRB1*03 (OR=3.89, P=0.0006), indicating that Cw*05 might be a marker of protective or risk haplotypes, respectively. Background and purpose: The identification of factors associated to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measures in patients with migraine has major implications in terms of prognosis and treatment. This study aimed at investigating associations between HRQoL and comorbid mood and anxiety disorders. Methods: Consecutive adult outpatients with a diagnosis of migraine with or without aura were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) Plus version 5.0.0 and the Migraine-Specific Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (MSQ). Results: Data of 112 patients (82 females), 69 without aura, mean age 41.2 ± 13.3 years were analyzed. According to the M.I.N.I., 50% patients had a lifetime or current DSM-IV diagnosis of mood or anxiety disorder. There was no between-groups difference in MSQ total and subscale scores in relation to the presence/absence of psychiatric comorbidity, independently whether that was current or lifetime. In the group of subjects with psychiatric disorders, age at onset of migraine correlated with MSQ-total (rho = −0.407 P = 0.002), and subscale scores (Role Function-Restrictive, rho = −0.397, P = 0.002; Emotional Function, rho = −0.487, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that current and/or lifetime psychiatric comorbidities are not associated with HRQoL measures in patients with migraine. However, patients with migraine and psychiatric comorbidities may represent a specific subgroup deserving particular attention for targeted interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study that introduced a procedure consists of a simulation-based computational optimization technique based on non-deterministic search method arisen from the field of evolutionary computation. The study highlighted differences between both strategies and focus on what properties of the exploited technique emerge as new possibilities. It presented essayed cases which showed how the employed technique can outperform conventional approaches in terms of fitting quality.
