The article presents a scientific review of some unique opportunities offered by the combination of a short-pulse neutron source at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) and high resolution neutron counting detector with fast squad Timepix readout. It proves how the process can provide some novel non-destructive testing techniques which can be improved and extended to the new applications in the future. It also details thermal neutron radiography and neutron resonance attenuation imaging.

The article presents a scientific review of the evolution of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) spallation physics team in designing spallation targets from being mainly focused on the nuclear physics aspect of the task to include material science and chemistry. It shows how LANSCE has already gained from the process and what chances exist for further development of material science in target and moderator design. An overview of the cold beryllium reflector filter concept is given.

Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope 23O. The 22O fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from 23O at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with de-exciting γ rays, allowing to discern between 22O ground-state and excited-states contributions. From the comparison of exclusive experimental momentum distributions for the one-neutron removal channel to theoretical momentum distributions calculated in an Eikonal model for the knockout process, and spin and parity assignment of Iπ = 1/2+ was deduced for the 23O ground state. Very neutron-deficient fragments were produced by projectile fragmentation of a 140 MeV/ nucleon 78Kr primary beam on a beryllium target. The secondary fragments were unambiguously identified after separation in the A1900 fragment separator. Three events of 60Ge and four events of 64Se have been observed for the first time, making 60Ge the heaviest known isotone of the N = 28 neutron shell. No events of 59Ga and 63As have been observed providing very strong evidence that these nuclei are unbound with respect to proton emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
