Objective: The gait analysis of patients after surgery for tumors around the knee joint relies on the use of a three‐dimensional motion capture system. However, obtaining long‐term, free‐standing, real‐world gait data with three‐dimensional gait analysis is challenging. In this study, we utilized a portable gait analyzer to collect gait data from patients who underwent rotating hinge knee megaprosthesis (RHK) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA), this study aims to compare via gait analysis patients who underwent megaprosthesis with patients with TKA. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on eight patients with knee bone tumors (RHK group) and ten patients with knee osteoarthritis who underwent standard TKA (TKA group) from January 2018 to January 2022. Gait analysis, was conducted using the Intelligent Device for Energy Expenditure and Activity (IDEEA), and the results were compared with those of a healthy control group. The lower limb alignment of the RHK and TKA groups was evaluated, and the KSS scores of the two groups were collected and compared. Energy consumption during a 20‐m walk was measured and compared among the RHK, TKA, and healthy control groups using one‐way ANOVA. Paired t‐tests were used to compare the operated and nonoperated limbs within groups. Results: All patients exhibited slower walking speeds and cadence than the healthy control participants (p < 0.01), While no significant differences were found between the RHK and TKA groups. The single support time (521.15 ± 94.56 ms) of the RHK‐operated limb was significantly shorter than that of the nonoperated limb (576.53 ± 77.40 ms, p = 0.004). The pulling acceleration of the RHK group (0.71 ± 0.27 G) was lower than that of the TKA group (1.04 ± 0.31 G, p = 0.029). The push‐off angle in the RHK group (24.91° ± 10.91°) was significantly greater than that in the TKA group (10.64° ± 5.41°, p = 0.007). The RHK group showed significant differences between the operated and nonoperated limbs in terms of swing power, ground impact, footfall, and push‐off. The RHK (0.03 ± 0.01 kcal/min/kg) and TKA (0.029 ± 0.01 kcal/min/kg) groups had significantly greater energy expenditures than did the healthy control group (0.02 ± 0.00 kcal/min/kg, p < 0.05). The comparison of HKA angles and KSS scores between the TKA and RHK groups showed statistically significant differences. Conclusion: A portable gait analyzer appears to be suitable for evaluating the effects of RHK. RHK patients demonstrate more pronounced gait abnormalities than TKA patients, reflected in greater energy expenditure, implying reduced walking efficiency. This suggests the need for increased energy expenditure in RHK patients to compensate for abnormal knee joint conditions during walking and maintain body balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mechanical properties of polymers can be regulated by changing the numbers of hydrogen bonds and entanglement points. However, the interplay between hydrogen bond network and entangled network during stretching has not been fully studied. We performed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the changes of hydrogen bonds and entanglements during stretching. The stretching causes the orientation of local segments, leading to the entanglement sliding and disentanglements at different strain regions. Then, the number of entanglement points keeps constant at first and then decreases with increasing strain. Differently, the orientation of local segments can cause the change of chain conformation, which leads to the breakage of hydrogen bonds. Thus, the number of hydrogen bonds decreases with the increase of strain. Simulation results also demonstrated that the number of hydrogen bonds decreases faster during stretching in systems containing more entanglements. In systems with different hydrogen bond site contents, the initial number of entanglement nodes and its decline range during stretching increase firstly and then decrease with the increase of hydrogen bond site content. The impact of the size effect on the color and photoluminescence (PL) of quantum dots (QDs) has sparked a revolutionary field of research, culminating in the prestigious Nobel Prize in 2023. Prior to their widespread popularization and large-scale commercialization, it is of paramount importance to effectively manipulate and optimize their optical properties. In this review, we place specific emphasis on the striking correlation between the optical characteristics of QDs and their size, structure, composition, and interface environment. We commence by tracing the evolution of quantum dot technology and subsequently categorizing QDs while outlining their typical synthesis methods. This is followed by a deep dive into the pivotal roles of size, composition, structure, and interfacial ligands in fine-tuning, optimizing, and enhancing the optical properties of QDs. Additionally, we illustrate the luminescence enhancement and charge transfer phenomena stemming from the heterojunction between semiconductor QDs and metal nanomaterials, which contribute to improved performance. Lastly, we introduce the burgeoning field of chiral QDs and their innovative applications. Armed with this knowledge, QDs can be readily tailored to exhibit adjustable luminous characteristics across the entire spectrum, boasting high luminous efficiency through multifaceted regulation. Mechanotransduction is the essential process that cells convert mechanical force into biochemical responses, and electrochemical sensor stands out from existing techniques by providing quantitative and real-time information about the biochemical signals during cellular mechanotransduction. However, the intracellular biochemical response evoked by mechanical force has been poorly monitored. In this paper, we report a method to apply local stretch on single cell and simultaneously monitor the ensuing intracellular biochemical signals. Specifically, a ferromagnetic micropipette was fabricated to locally stretch a single cell labeled with Fe3O4 nanoparticles under the external magnetic field, and the SiC@Pt nanowire electrode (SiC@Pt NWE) was inserted into the cell to monitor the intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production induced by the local stretch. As a proof of concept, this work quantitatively investigated the elevated amount of H2O2 levels in single endothelial cell under different stretching amplitudes. Because of the low reactivity of cyclic nitrides, liquid-phase synthesis of carbon nitride introduces challenges despite its favorable potential for energy-efficient preparation and superior applications. In this study, we demonstrate a strong interaction between citric acid and melamine through experimental observation and theoretical simulation, which effectively activates melamine-condensation activity and produces carbon-rich carbon nitride nanosheets (CCN NSs) during hydrothermal reaction. Under a large specific surface area and increased light absorption, these CCN NSs demonstrate significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity in CO2 reduction, increasing the CO production rate by approximately tenfold compared with hexagonal melamine (h-Me). Moreover, the product selectivity of CCN NSs reaches up to 93.5% to generate CO from CO2. Furthermore, the annealed CCN NSs exhibit a CO conversion rate of up to 95.30 μmol/(g h), which indicates an 18-fold increase compared with traditional carbon nitride. During the CCN NS synthesis, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NDC QDs) are simultaneously produced and remain suspended in the supernatant after centrifugation. These QDs disperse well in water and exhibit excellent luminescent properties (QY = 67.2%), allowing their application in the design of selective and sensitive sensors to detect pollutants such as pesticide 2,4-dichlorophenol with a detection limit of as low as 0.04 µmol/L. Notably, the simultaneous synthesis of CCN NSs and NDC QDs provides a cost-effective and highly efficient process, yielding products with superior capabilities for catalytic conversion of CO2 and pollutant detection, respectively. Engineered noble metal nanomaterials (NMN) possess adjustable optical, electrical, and biocompatible properties that make them excellent tools for probing the nano‐bio‐interface. Understanding their interactions with biomolecules, cells, and tissues at the nano‐bio‐interface is crucial in designing these nanomaterials for biomedical applications. This review summarizes the structure, properties, synthesis, and passivation methods of noble metal nanoparticles, as well as the construction strategy and detection technology of the nano‐bio‐interface to provide important information about their uptake, distribution, metabolism, and degradation in vivo and in vitro. The related action mechanisms include the kinetic and thermodynamic processes of the nano‐bio‐interface, the driving forces for its formation, and the chemical reactions at the nano‐bio‐interface. By exploring the action mechanism of the nano‐bio‐interface, the antibacterial properties and cytotoxicity of NMN could be better understood, and open up more extensive biological applications. Seasonal environmental shifts and improper eating habits are the important causes of diarrhea in children and growing animals. Whether adjusting feeding time at varying temperatures can modify cecal bacterial structure and improve diarrhea remains unknown. Three batches growing rabbits with two groups per batch were raised under different feeding regimens (fed at daytime vs. nighttime) in spring, summer and winter separately, and contents were collected at six time points in 1 day and used 16S rRNA sequencing to investigate the effects of feeding regimens and season on the composition and circadian rhythms of cecum bacteria. Randomized forest regression screened 12 genera that were significantly associated with seasonal ambient temperature changes. Nighttime feeding reduced the abundance of the conditionally pathogenic bacteria Desulfovibrio and Alistipes in summer and Campylobacter in winter. And also increases the circadian rhythmic Amplicon Sequence Variants in the cecum, enhancing the rhythm of bacterial metabolic activity. This rhythmic metabolic profile of cecum bacteria may be conducive to the digestion and absorption of nutrients in the host cecum. In addition, this study has identified 9 genera that were affected by the combination of seasons and feeding time. In general, we found that seasons and feeding time and their combinations affect cecum composition and circadian rhythms, and that daytime feeding during summer and winter disrupts the balance of cecum bacteria of growing rabbits, which may adversely affect cecum health and induce diarrhea risk. Highlights: Atomically substitutional engineering in binary transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) enables the facile production of ternary or quaternary TMDs with tunable (opto)electronic properties spanning the entire compositional spectrum. A comprehensive overview is provided on multinary TMDs, including Janus-type structures, aiming to elaborate on their theoretical foundations, synthetic strategies, tailored properties, and superior applications. The challenges and opportunities faced in accelerating the exploitation of multinary TMDs as highly promising nanomaterials are discussed. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a promising class of layered materials in the post-graphene era, with extensive research attention due to their diverse alternative elements and fascinating semiconductor behavior. Binary MX2 layers with different metal and/or chalcogen elements have similar structural parameters but varied optoelectronic properties, providing opportunities for atomically substitutional engineering via partial alteration of metal or/and chalcogenide atoms to produce ternary or quaternary TMDs. The resulting multinary TMD layers still maintain structural integrity and homogeneity while achieving tunable (opto)electronic properties across a full range of composition with arbitrary ratios of introduced metal or chalcogen to original counterparts (0–100%). Atomic substitution in TMD layers offers new adjustable degrees of freedom for tailoring crystal phase, band alignment/structure, carrier density, and surface reactive activity, enabling novel and promising applications. This review comprehensively elaborates on atomically substitutional engineering in TMD layers, including theoretical foundations, synthetic strategies, tailored properties, and superior applications. The emerging type of ternary TMDs, Janus TMDs, is presented specifically to highlight their typical compounds, fabrication methods, and potential applications. Patchoulol, a valuable compound belonging to the sesquiterpenoid family, is the primary component of patchouli oil produced by Pogostemon cablin (P. cablin). It has a variety of pharmacological and biological activities and is widely used in the medical and cosmetic industries. However, despite its significance, there is a lack of research on the transcriptional modulation of patchoulol biosynthesis. Salicylic acid (SA), is a vital plant hormone that serves as a critical signal molecule and plays an essential role in plant growth and defense. However, to date, no studies have explored the modulation of patchoulol biosynthesis by SA. In our study, we discovered that the application of SA can enhance the production of patchoulol. Utilizing transcriptome analysis of SA-treated P. cablin, we identified a crucial downstream transcription factor, PatWRKY71. The transcription level of PatWRKY71 was significantly increased with the use of SA. Furthermore, our research has revealed that PatWRKY71 was capable of binding to the promoter of PatPTS, ultimately leading to an increase in its expression. When PatWRKY71 was silenced by a virus, the expression of both PatWRKY71 and PatPTS was reduced, resulting in the down-regulation of patchoulol production. Through our studies, we discovered that heterologous expression of PatWRKY71 leads to an increase in the sensitivity of Arabidopsis to salt and Cd, as well as an outbreak of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, we uncovered the regulatory role of PatWRKY71 in both patchoulol biosynthesis and plant defense response. The glutathione (GSH) system is one of the most powerful intracellular antioxidant systems for the elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. However, the rapid kinetics information (at the millisecond to the second level) during the dynamic antioxidation process of the GSH system remains unclear. As such, we specifically developed a novel dual‐wire nanosensor (DWNS) that can selectively and synchronously measure the levels of GSH and ROS with high temporal resolution, and applied it to monitor the transient ROS generation as well as the rapid antioxidation process of the GSH system in individual cancer cells. These measurements revealed that the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the GSH system is rapidly initiated against ROS burst in a sub‐second time scale, but the elimination process is short‐lived, ending after a few seconds, while some ROS are still present in the cells. Mass spectrometry (MS) has been developed for high-sensitivity structural determination of carbohydrates. Due to the similarity of oligosaccharide structures, there is still insufficient information about the correlation between carbohydrate chemical structure and mass spectra. A series of trisaccharides containing different glycosidic linkages (1!2, 1!3, 1!4, 1!6, 2!1 and 2!6), anomeric configuration (a and b), and monosaccharide (pentose, hexose and hexuronic acid), as well as two cyclodextrins (a- and b-cyclodextrin) were systematically investigated using matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF/TOF MS) in positive and negative ion modes using super-DHB (2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid) and harmine hydrochloride as matrices, respectively. Cross-ring cleavage generated by A-types ions with neutral losses of 48, 60, 78, 90, or 120Da were observed in the negative ion MS/MS spectra, and neutral losses of 60, 90, or 120Da were observed in the positive ion MS/MS spectra. Glycosidic cleavages were observed in both modes. The linkage isomers were unambiguously identified by those diagnostic fragment ions with their relative intensities. Furthermore, the correlation between linkage pattern and characteristic ions successfully allowed the characterization of polysaccharides with different structural features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A highly regio-, chemo-, and stereoselective cascade process initiated by enantioselective iminium-catalyzed conjugate addition of 2-hydroxycinnamaldehydes and 2-oxocarboxylic esters is presented. Normal cinnamaldehydes are not reactive under the same reaction conditions. It is challenging to effectively purge wastewater containing heavy metal ions at low concentration. In order to remove trace Cr (VI) from wastewater efficiently, a positively charged microporous membrane was prepared by firstly non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) of amphiphilic polymer and secondly surface quaternization modification. The morphologies, surface roughness, surface charge, hydrophilicity, and pore size of membranes were characterized. Based on the dual action of micellar adsorption and charge repulsion, when surfactant is 4 mM and Cr (VI) is 60 ppm, the surface quaternization membrane (Q-MPVD) achieves 99.8 % Cr (VI) rejection simultaneously accompanied by a permeability of 100 LMH/bar. Meanwhile, the effects of STAC concentration, Cr (VI) concentration, pH as well as inorganic salt concentration on the composite micellar size, and Cr (VI) rejection performance were investigated, respectively. Moreover, the Q-MPVD membrane shows an excellent separation stability over a wide pH range, indicating its application perspective in engineering process. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) from 16 feces samples of pig farm, and to evaluate the probiotic potential of these isolates as potential oral probiotic candidates. The selection process was based on the isolation, identification, and a series of experiments for the selection of appropriate candidates with beneficial properties. The results demonstrated that most of LAB showed relatively strong resistance to pH 2.5 and high bile salts (1%), and had good survival in simulated gastric and intestinal juice. 9 isolates displayed antimicrobial activities against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter sakazakii. Almost all isolates were sensitive to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, vancomycin and amoxicillin, and most of isolates exhibited resistance against tetracycline and vancomycin. The adhesion rates of LAB varied greatly. The results of the study suggested that the Lactobacillus acidophilus NCUA065001 have the important functional property of probiotic candidates to enhance gut integrity and could considered to be the potential antibiotic alternatives in the pig feed industry. Heat is abundantly available from various sources including solar irradiation, geothermal energy, industrial processes, automobile exhausts, and from the human body and other living beings. However, these heat sources are often overlooked despite their abundance, and their potential applications remain underdeveloped. In recent years, important progress has been made in the development of high‐performance thermoelectric materials, which have been extensively studied at medium and high temperatures, but less so at near room temperature. Silver‐based chalcogenides have gained much attention as near room temperature thermoelectric materials, and they are anticipated to catalyze tremendous growth in energy harvesting for advancing internet of things appliances, self‐powered wearable medical systems, and self‐powered wearable intelligent devices. This review encompasses the recent advancements of thermoelectric silver‐based chalcogenides including binary and multinary compounds, as well as their hybrids and composites. Emphasis is placed on strategic approaches which improve the value of the figure of merit for better thermoelectric performance at near room temperature via engineering material size, shape, composition, bandgap, etc. This review also describes the potential of thermoelectric materials for applications including self‐powering wearable devices created by different approaches. The detection of edges in images is a pressing issue in the field of image processing. This technique has found widespread application in image pattern recognition, machine vision, and a variety of other areas. The feasibility and effectiveness of grey theory in image engineering applications have prompted researchers to continuously explore it. The grey model (GM (1,1)) with the first-order differentiation of one variable is the grey prediction model that is most frequently used. It is a typical trend analysis model and can be used for image edge detection. The traditional integer-order differential image edge detection operator has problems such as blurred and discontinuous edges, incomplete image details, and high influence by noise. We present a novel grey model for detecting image edges based on a fractional-order discrete operator in this paper. To improve the features of the original image, our model first preprocesses it before calculating the prediction of the original image using our fractional-order cumulative greyscale model. We obtain the edge information of the image by first subtracting a preprocessed image from the predicted image and then eliminating isolated noise points using the median filtering method. Based on the discrete wavelet transform, image edges are finally extracted. The comparison experiments with a traditional edge detection operator show that our algorithm can accurately locate the image edges, the image edges are clear and complete, and this model has better anti-noise performance. Adrenomedullin (ADM) has beneficial effects on Leydig cells under pathological conditions, including lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced orchitis. Our previous studies demonstrated that ADM exerts a restorative effect on steroidogenesis in LPS‐treated primary rat Leydig cells by attenuating oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis. In this study, we aim to investigate whether ADM inhibits Leydig cell dysfunction by rescuing steroidogenic enzymes in vivo. Rats were administered with LPS and injected with Ad‐ADM, an adeno‐associated virus vector that expressed ADM. Then, rat testes were collected for 3β‐hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β‐HSD) immunofluorescence staining. Steroidogenic enzymes or steroidogenic regulatory factors or protein, including steroidogenic factor‐1 (SF‐1), liver receptor homologue‐1 (LRH1), Nur77, steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), cytochrome P450 cholesterol side chain cleavage enzyme (P450scc), 3β‐HSD, cytochrome P450 17α‐hydroxylase/17, 20 lyase (CYP17) and 17β‐hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17β‐HSD), were detected via gene expression profiling and western blot analysis. Plasma testosterone concentrations were measured. Results showed that ADM may inhibit Leydig cell dysfunction by rescuing steroidogenic enzymes and steroidogenic regulatory factors in vivo. The reduction in the number of Leydig cells after LPS exposure was reversed by ADM. ADM rescued the gene or protein levels of SF‐1, LRH1, Nur77, StAR, P450scc, 3β‐HSD, CYP17 and 17β‐HSD and plasma testosterone concentrations. The white-backed planthopper, WBPH, Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) is a plant pest that migrates long-distances. The migration pathway of WBPH in eastern China coincides with the north-south round trip of the East Asian monsoon. However, in Yunnan China, which is affected by two monsoon systems, the migration pathway is unclear. Light-trap data and analysis of female ovarian development showed that the peak period of immigration of WBPH into western Yunnan was earlier than in eastern Yunnan. Using meteorological reanalysis data and flight parameters of WBPH, trajectory modeling showed that there are two immigration pathways to Yunnan. One is from Myanmar to western Yunnan, and the other is from Vietnam and Laos to eastern Yunnan. The reason for the differences in source areas and immigration pathways between eastern and western Yunnan is that the west wind prevails in western Yunnan and is controlled by South Asian monsoon, while southwesterly winds prevail in eastern Yunnan due to the combined influence of South Asian monsoon and East Asian monsoon. The results indicate that WBPH invades Yunnan via two pathways under a two-monsoon system. These data will allow earlier prediction and population management of WBPH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many cells in vivo have their inherent motions, which involve numerous biochemical and biophysical signals synergistically regulating cell behavior and function. However, existing methods offer little information about the concurrently chemical and physical responses of dynamically pulsing cells. Here, we report a soft electrode with an electrospun poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)‐based nanomesh to fully comply with spontaneous motions of cells. Moreover, this electrode demonstrated excellent electrical conductivity, electrochemical performance and cellular biocompatibility. Cardiomyocytes cultured thereon exhibited autonomous and rhythmic contractility, and synchronously induced mechanical deformation of the underlying electrode, which allowed real‐time monitoring of nitric oxide release and electrophysiological activity of cardiomyocytes. However, existing methods offer little information about the concurrently chemical and physical responses of dynamically pulsing cells. Here, we report a soft electrode with an electrospun poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)‐based nanomesh to fully comply with spontaneous motions of cells. Moreover, this electrode demonstrated excellent electrical conductivity, electrochemical performance and cellular biocompatibility. Cardiomyocytes cultured thereon exhibited autonomous and rhythmic contractility, and synchronously induced mechanical deformation of the underlying electrode, which allowed real‐time monitoring of nitric oxide release and electrophysiological activity of cardiomyocytes. Objective: Disc degenerative disease is regarded as the primary cause of low back pain. The purpose of this study was to clarify the fate of Intervertebral disc (IVD) following the traumatic event through long-term follow-up and to identify the risk factors for irrevocable degeneration. Methods: 78 non-operative patients who had traumatic fracture of the thoracic or lumbar at minimum 5 years before were enrolled. Disc degeneration was assessed by modified Pfirrmann grading system. The Acceleration of disc degeneration (ADD) was defined as the difference of grade between IVD adjacent to fractured vertebra and their neighbors with increasing grade from 0 to 7. A novel classification of Endplate injury (EPI) with increasing severity from type I to III was proposed based on the injured morphology. The long-term fate of IVD adjacent to fractured vertebra and risk factors for ADD were analyzed. Results: The mean time of last follow-up was 15.4 ± 10.8 years (range 5–49 years) after injury. 138 (68.66%) IVDs were graded 0 of ADD, 44 (21.89%) were 1–3 and 19 (9.45%) were 4–7. Multivariate binary logistic regression analyses showed that injured posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) and EPI type III were independent risk factors for ADD. Conclusions: Injured PLC and EPI type III were independent risk factors for ADD in patients with traumatic thoracic or lumbar fracture. For such patients without risk factors for ADD, the non-intervertebral fusion should be given a priority if surgery is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantifying inter-specific variations of tree resilience to drought and revealing the underlying mechanisms are of great importance to the understanding of forest functionality, particularly in water-limited regions. So far, comprehensive studies incorporating investigations in inter-specific variations of long-term growth patterns of trees and the underlying physiological mechanisms are very limited. Here, in a semi-arid site of northern China, tree radial growth rate, inter-annual tree-ring growth responses to climate variability, as well as physiological characteristics pertinent to xylem hydraulics, carbon assimilation and drought tolerance were analyzed in seven pine species growing in a common environment. Considerable inter-specific variations in radial growth rate, growth response to drought and physiological characteristics were observed among the studied species. Differently, the studied species exhibited similar degrees of resistance to drought-induced branch xylem embolism, with water potential corresponding to 50% loss hydraulic conductivity ranging from −2.31 to −2.96 MPa. We found that higher branch hydraulic efficiency is related to greater leaf photosynthetic capacity, smaller hydraulic safety margin and lower woody density (P  < 0.05, linear regressions), but not related to higher tree radial growth rate (P  > 0.05). Rather, species with higher hydraulic conductivity and photosynthetic capacity were more sensitive to drought stress and tended to show weaker growth resistance to extreme drought events as quantified by tree-ring analyses, which is at least partially due to a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and safety across species. This study thus demonstrates the importance of drought resilience rather than instantaneous water and carbon flux capacity in determining tree growth in water-limited environments. The circadian misalignment of the gut microbiota caused by unusual eating times in adult animals is related to disease development. However, whether the composition and diurnal rhythm of gut microbiota can be optimized by synchronizing the window period of eating with natural eating habits to reduce the risk of diarrhea remains unclear, especially in growing animals. In this study, 108 5-week-old weaned rabbits (nocturnal animals) were randomly subjected to daytime feeding (DF) and night-restricted feeding (NRF). At age 12 weeks, six rabbits were selected from each group, and caecum and cecal contents, as well as serum samples were collected at 4-h intervals during 24 h. Overall, NRF was found to reduce the risk of diarrhea in growing rabbits, improved the diurnal rhythm and abundance of beneficial microorganisms, along with the production of beneficial metabolites, whereas reduced the abundance of potential pathogens (Synergistes , Desulfovibrio , and Alistipes). Moreover, NRF improved diurnal rhythm of tryptophan hydroxylase isoform 1 and serotonin. Furthermore, NRF strengthened the diurnal amplitude of body core temperature, and promoted the diurnal expression of intestinal clock genes (BMAL1 , CLOCK , REV-ERBα , and PER1), and genes related to the regulation of the intestinal barrier (CLAUDIN-1), and intestinal epithelial cell self-proliferation and renewal (BMI1). In vitro simulation experiments further revealed that synchronization of microbial-driven serotonin rhythm and eating activity-driven body temperature oscillations, which are important zeitgebers, could promote the diurnal expression of clock genes and CLAUDIN-1 in rabbit intestinal epithelial cells (RIEC), and enhance RIEC proliferation. This is the first study to reveal that NRF reprograms the diurnal rhythm of the gut microbiome, promotes the diurnal expression of clock genes and tight junction genes via synchronization of microbial-driven serotonin rhythm and eating activity-driven body temperature oscillations, thereby improving intestinal health and reducing the risk of diarrhea in growing rabbits. Selective laser melting (SLM) technology plays an important role in the preparation of porous titanium (Ti) implants with complex structures and precise sizes. Unfortunately, the processing characteristics of this technology, which include rapid melting and solidification, lead to products with high residual stress. Herein, an in situ method was developed to restrain the residual stress and improve the mechanical strength of porous Ti alloys during laser additive manufacturing. In brief, porous Ti6Al4V was prepared by an SLM three-dimensional (3D) printer equipped with a double laser system that could rescan each layer immediately after solidification of the molten powder, thus reducing the temperature gradient and avoiding rapid melting and cooling. Results indicated that double scanning can provide stronger bonding conditions for the honeycomb structure and improve the yield strength and elastic modulus of the alloy. Rescanning with an energy density of 75% resulted in 33.5%–38.0% reductions in residual stress. The porosities of double-scanned specimens were 2%–4% lower than those of single-scanned specimens, and the differences noted increased with increasing sheet thickness. Circle of Willis (CoW) is the most critical collateral pathway that supports the redistribution of blood supply in the brain. The variation of CoW is closely correlated with cerebral hemodynamic and cerebral vessel-related diseases. But what is responsible for CoW variation remains unclear. Moreover, the visual evaluation for CoW variation is highly time-consuming. In the present study, based on the computer tomography angiography (CTA) dataset from 255 patients, the correlation between the CoW variations with age, gender, and cerebral or cervical artery stenosis was investigated. A multitask convolutional neural network (CNN) was used to segment cerebral arteries automatically. The results showed the prevalence of variation of the anterior communicating artery (Aco) was higher in the normal senior group than in the normal young group and in females than in males. The changes in the prevalence of variations of individual segments were not demonstrated in the population with stenosis of the afferent and efferent arteries, so the critical factors for variation are related to genetic or physiological factors rather than pathological lesions. Using the multitask CNN model, complete cerebral and cervical arteries could be segmented and reconstructed in 120 seconds, and an average Dice coefficient of 78.2% was achieved. The segmentation accuracy for precommunicating part of anterior cerebral artery and posterior cerebral artery, the posterior communicating arteries, and Aco in CoW was 100%, 99.2%, 94%, and 69%, respectively. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be considered as an adjunct tool for detecting the CoW, particularly related to reducing workload and improving the accuracy of the visual evaluation. As a promising technique to potentially address the energy crisis and environmental issues, photocatalysis has been reported widely to exhibit various outstanding behaviors in production of new fuels/chemicals and treatment of contaminants. The photocatalytic performance is extremely dependent on the used photocatalysts, so that the design and preparation of efficient photocatalysts are critically important for significantly improving the photocatalytic activity. Among various strategies, the hybridization of metal with semiconductors has recently been attracting more and more research interest owing to their expended spectral absorption, promoted transferring rate of charge carriers and Plasmon‐enhanced effect. In this minireview, the metal‐facilitated hybrid photocatalysts are overviewed comprehensively to first reveal unique functions of metals in improvement of photoactivity and summarize the emerging metal‐involved hybrid systems. Subsequently, the synthetic methods towards hybrid photocatalysts are introduced and their practical applications are emphasized in environmental remediation including degradation of organic pollutants, conversion of harmful gases, treatment of heavy metal ions and sterilization of bacteria. Asymmetric light transmission (ALT) or optical diode-like nanodevices have attracted many research interests in recent years for its rosy potential application in all optical computing and information systems. In this work, we propose and numerically demonstrate a bidirectional edge asymmetric light transmission (BE-ALT) device, which is composed by the easy-processing metal/dielectric cylinders arranged periodically on glass substrate. The ALT effect in the proposed BE-ALT device shows a saltation at one critical wavelength, i.e., the asymmetric subtraction owns different signs for the wavelength larger and smaller than the critical wavelength. The asymmetric subtraction designed in this work changes dramatically from − 60% to + 80% at around 600 nm, which can be effectively manipulated by applying different structure parameters. The underlying physical mechanism has been investigated systematically, including the asymmetric diffraction effect, localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR), and the waveguide mode (WGM). Graphite materials are widely used as electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage. N-doping is an effective method for enhancing the electrochemical properties of graphite. A novel one-step N-doping method for complete and compact carbon paper was proposed for molten salt electrolysis in the LiCl-KCl-Li3N system. The results show that the degree of graphitization of carbon paper can be improved by the electrolysis of molten salts, especially at 2.0 V. Nitrogen gas was produced at the anode and nitrogen atoms can substitute carbon atoms of carbon paper at different sites to create nitrogen doping during the electrolysis process. The doping content of N in carbon paper is up to 13.0wt%. There were three groups of nitrogen atoms, i.e. quaternary N (N-Q), pyrrolic N (N-5), and pyridinic N (N-6) in N-doping carbon paper. Compared with solid metals, liquid metals are considered more promising cathodes for molten slat/oxide electrolysis due to their fascinating advantages, which include strong depolarization effect, strong alloying effect, excellent selective separation, and low operating temperature. In this review, we briefly introduce the properties of the liquid metal cathodes and their selection rules, and then summarize development in liquid metal cathodes for molten salt electrolysis, specifically the extraction of Ti and separation of actinides and rare-earth metals in halide melts. We also review recent attractive progress in the preparation of liquid Ti alloys via molten oxide electrolysis by using liquid metal cathodes. Problems related to high-quality alloy production and large-scale applications are cited, and several research directions to further improve the quality of alloys are also discussed to realize the industrial applications of liquid metal cathodes. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating disorder that often results in temporary and/or permanent functional impairment below the injured level. To date, few satisfactory therapeutic strategies are available to treat SCI. Hence, exploring novel strategies for SCI is an essential public health concern. Cell transplantation therapy, which is associated with neuroprotection, immunomodulation, axon regeneration, neuronal relay formation and myelin regeneration, provides a promising therapeutic strategy for SCI. The neuronal stem cell (NSC) preconditioning method is an emerging approach, which facilitates NSC survival and neuronal differentiation after implantation. The aim of the present study was to develop a feasible candidate for cell‑based therapy following SCI in rats and to investigate the role of high mobility group box‑1 (HMGB1) in NSC activation. The results of the present study showed that transplantation of NSCs, preconditioned with 1 ng/ml HMGB1, facilitated functional improvement of injured spinal cords, as indicated by Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan mean scores, mechanical hypersensitivity and cold stimulation. Meanwhile, the histological examination of hematoxylin and eosin staining indicated that engraftment of HMGB1‑preconditioned NSCs resulted in decreased atrophy of the injured spinal cord. Meanwhile, the transplantation of HMGB1‑preconditioned NSCs resulted in an increased number of functional Nissl bodies in neurons, as detected by Nissl staining, and an increase in the number of βIII‑tubulin+ cells in the epicenter of injured spinal cords in rats with SCI. In addition, the results also demonstrated that 1 ng/ml HMGB1 promoted the differentiation of NSCs into neurons, and that the ERK signaling pathway played an important role in this process. In conclusion, the present data indicated that the preconditioning strategy with 1 ng/ml HMGB1 may present a feasible candidate for cell‑based therapy following SCI in rats, which may enlarge the scope of HMGB1 in NSC activation. Cyclic polymers exhibit fascinating crystallization behaviors owing to the absence of chain ends and more compact conformations. In the current simulation, dynamic Monte Carlo simulations were performed to reveal the underlying mechanism of the effect of chain topology and chain length on crystallization of polymer in solutions containing one-dimensional nanofiller. Simulation results suggested that the filled cyclic polymers exhibit higher melting temperature, higher crystallization temperature, and faster crystallization rate than the analogous linear polymers of identical chain length, especially in the systems with relatively short chains. Based on the Thomson-Gibbs equation, we theoretically analyzed the difference in the melting point between the cyclic and linear polymers under different chain lengths, and derived the dependence of the ratio of the melting point of the linear polymers to that of its cyclic analogs on chain length. Investigating the structures and properties of large-sized silicon clusters doped with multiple Au atoms can provide valuable microscopic information for gold-catalyzed high-quality Si nanowire and Au−Si alloying reactions, and also for the production of cluster-assembled functional materials. In this work, a quantum chemical investigation on the structural and electronic properties of double Au atoms doped Si20 cluster using density functional theory calculations was performed. The lowest-lying isomers of A u 2 Si 20 − / 0 / + (The meaning of the acronym: A u 2 Si 20 − / 0 / + refers to Au2Si20 cluster with a negative charge, neutral state, and a positive charge, respectively.) were found to all adopt a C2h symmetric Au2-endohedral honeycomb-shaped structure consisting of twelve Si5 pentagons. Interestingly, in the anionic, neutral, and cationic Au2Si20, twelve Si5 pentagons can be stabilised by two Au atoms. The two Au atoms in A u 2 Si 20 − / 0 / + tend to occupy high coordinate sites and exhibit strong aurophilic interactions. In addition, the Au−Si bonds show both covalent and ionic bonding characters. Moreover, A u 2 Si 20 − , Au2Si20, and A u 2 Si 20 + are all aromatic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
