Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of hierarchical zeolite materials with MEL, BEA and FAU structures. The synthesis is based on the carbon templating method with an in situ-generated carbon template. Through the decomposition of methane and deposition of coke over nickel nanoparticles supported on silica, a carbon–silica composite is obtained and exploited as a combined carbon template/silica source for the zeolite synthesis. The mesoporous zeolite materials were all prepared by hydrothermal crystallization in alkaline media followed by removal of the carbon template by combustion, which results in zeolite single crystals with intracrystalline pore volumes of up to 0.44 cm3 g−1. The treatment of biomass-derived fast pyrolysis vapors with solid acid catalysts (in particular HZSM-5 zeolite) improves the quality of liquid bio-oils. However, due to the highly reactive nature of the oxygenates, the catalysts deactivate rapidly due to coking. Within this study, the deactivation and product yields using steam-treated phosphorus-modified HZSM-5/γ-Al2O3 and bare γ-Al2O3 was studied with analytical Py-GC. While at a fixed catalyst temperature of 450 °C, a rapid breakthrough of oxygenates was observed with increased biomass feeding, this breakthrough was delayed and slower at higher catalyst temperatures (600 °C). Nevertheless, at all (constant) temperatures, there was a continuous decrease in the yield of oxygen-free hydrocarbons with increased biomass feeding. Raising the reaction temperature during the vapor treatment could successfully compensate for the loss in activity and allowed a more stable production of oxygen-free hydrocarbons. Since more biomass could be fed over the same amount of catalyst while maintaining good deoxygenation performance, this strategy reduces the frequency of regeneration in parallel fixed bed applications and provides a more stable product yield. The approach appears particularly interesting for catalysts that are robust under hydrothermal conditions and warrants further investigations at larger scales for the collection and analysis of liquid bio-oil. Alkali earth metal molybdates (MMoO4, M = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) were investigated as catalysts for the selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde in the search for more stable alternatives to the current industrial iron molybdate catalyst. The catalysts were prepared by either sol-gel synthesis or co-precipitation with both stoichiometric ratio (Mo:M = 1.0) and 10 mol% to 20 mol% excess Mo (Mo:M = 1.1 to 1.2). The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption, Raman spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD), and inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The catalytic performance of the catalysts was measured in a lab-scale, packed bed reactor setup by continuous operation for up to 100 h on stream at 400 °C. Initial selectivities towards formaldehyde of above 97% were achieved for all samples with excess molybdenum oxide at MeOH conversions between 5% and 75%. Dimethyl ether (DME) and dimethoxymethane (DMM) were the main byproducts, but CO (0.1%–2.1%) and CO2 (0.1%–0.4%) were also detected. It was found that excess molybdenum oxide evaporated from all the catalysts under operating conditions within 10 to 100 h on stream. No molybdenum evaporation past the point of stoichiometry was detected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
