Several factors contribute to the increase in irrigation demand: population growth, demand for higher value-added products, and the impacts of climate change, among others. High-quality water is essential for irrigation, so knowledge of water quality is critical. Additionally, water use in agriculture has been increasing in the last decades. Lack of water quality can cause drip clog, a lack of application uniformity, cross-contamination, and direct and indirect impacts on plants and soil. Currently, there is a need for more automated methods for evaluating and monitoring water quality for irrigation purposes, considering different aspects, from impacts on soil to impacts on irrigation systems. This work proposes a data-driven method to address this gap and implemented it in a case study in the PCJ river basin in Brazil. The methodology contains nine components and considers the main steps of the data lifecycle and the traditional machine learning workflow, allowing for automated knowledge extraction and providing important information for improving decision making. The case study illustrates the use of the methodology, highlighting its main advantages and challenges. Clustering different scenarios in three hydrological years (high, average, and lower streamflows) and considering different inputs (soil-related metrics, irrigation system-related metrics, and all metrics) helped generate new insights into the area that would not be easily obtained using traditional methods. Introduction: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterised by the confluence of muscle deterioration and high adiposity. When non-surgical interventions prove insufficient, bariatric surgery (BS) becomes the primary approach. This study aimed to address BS effects on SO outcomes 1 year post-surgery among middle-aged women, also considering physical exercise's impact. Methods: Prospective single-centre study of 140 patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy between November 2019 and December 2022. Participants were categorised into tertiles according to SO's diagnosis and severity (group 1—patients with the most severe SO; group 2—intermediate; group 3—the least severe or without SO), calculated considering the consensus issued by ESPEN and EASO in 2022. Evaluations of clinical and biochemical parameters were conducted before and 12 months after BS, and the variation was used for comparative purposes. Body composition was assessed using bone density scans. Linear regression analysis accounted for both surgery type and baseline body mass index (BMI). Results: Before BS, SO prevalence in the overall sample was 89.3%, decreasing to 2.9% after BS. Group 1 had more body fat mass (56.9 vs 54.8 vs 50.7 kg, p < 0.001), total, trunk and leg fat at baseline and a significantly lower total skeletal muscle mass (47.2 vs 49.4 vs 51.8 kg, p < 0.001). One year post-BS, group 1 presented more weight loss (− 39.8 ± 11.4 kg, p = 0.031), BMI reduction (− 15.9 ± 4.6 kg/m2, p = 0.005) and lost more fat mass (− 32.6 vs − 30.5 vs − 27.9 kg, p = 0.005), but not total skeletal muscle mass (− 5.8 vs − 5.9 vs − 6.8 kg, p = 0.130). Remission rates for comorbidities were substantial among all groups, but more marked among patients within group 1 (type 2 diabetes mellitus 75%, hypertension 47.1% and dyslipidemia 52.8%). Engagement in physical exercise of any kind has increased post-BS (33.1% vs 79.1%). Conclusion: Despite concerns about malabsorptive mechanisms potentially worsening muscle loss, patients with the most severe SO undergoing BS lost more fat mass while experiencing the smallest reduction in total skeletal muscle mass. Background: Bariatric surgery leads to weight loss and to cardiometabolic risk improvement. Although prediabetes remission after bariatric surgery is biologically plausible, data on this topic is scarce. We aimed to assess prediabetes remission rate and clinical predictors of remission in a 4 year follow up period. Methods: Observational longitudinal study including patients with obesity and prediabetes who had undergone bariatric surgery in our centre. Prediabetes was defined as having a baseline glycated haemoglobin (A1c) between 5.7% and 6.4% and absence of anti-diabetic drug treatment. We used logistic regression models to evaluate the association between the predictors and prediabetes remission rate. Results: A total of 669 patients were included, 84% being female. The population had a mean age of 45.4 ± 10.1 years-old, body mass index of 43.8 ± 5.7 kg/m2, and median A1c of 5.9 [5.8, 6.1]%. After bariatric surgery, prediabetes remission rate was 82%, 73%, 66%, and 58%, respectively in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of follow-up. Gastric sleeve (GS) surgery was associated with higher prediabetes remission rate than Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in the 3rd year of follow-up. Men had a higher remission rate than women, in the 1st and 3nd years of follow-up in the unadjusted analysis. Younger patients presented a higher remission rate comparing to older patients in the 3rd year of follow-up. Conclusion: We showed a high prediabetes remission rate after bariatric surgery. The remission rate decreases over the follow-up period, although most of the patients maintain the normoglycemia. Crop irrigation requirements are usually estimated based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc) as determined by the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficient (Kc). There is a lack of knowledge on the irrigation requirements of tropical forage crops in Brazil, contrasting with the increasing use of irrigation in pastures. The effort of this study was to investigate what would be the water needs of tropical forages in Southern Brazil, based on a robust experimental database. The study was carried out in São Paulo State-Brazil using different forages species and their combinations [Guinea grass (GG); Guinea grass + black oat + ryegrass (GOR); Bermuda grass (BG), and Bermuda + black oat + ryegrass (BOR)]. The experimental fields were fully irrigated, and the Kc values were derived from ETc measurements on lysimeters; ETo was estimated using daily data from a nearby weather station and the standard FAO56 parameterization. Mean daily ETc values for GG, GOR, BG and BOR were 4.1, 2.9, 3.6, and 3.4 mm, respectively, and respective mean Kc values were 0.99, 0.90, 1.0, and 0.94. Average Kc values for all plots decreased as ETo increased, producing a negative Kc-ETo relationship, mainly when ETo reached values greater than 5 mm d−1. This was most likely due to internal plant stomatal resistance to vapor release from the leaves diffusing to the atmosphere at high ETo. So, the time-based Kc curves described by FAO 56 manual should be adjusted for the analyzed crops considering different ranges of ETo to improve the required irrigation depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a worldwide lockdown, which affected physical exercise habits, as well as having a detrimental effect on psychological health and follow-up visits of patients submitted to bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the 2-year weight loss of patients submitted to bariatric surgery in our center. Methods: This was an observational study comparing the weight loss of patients who underwent bariatric surgery from January to March 2020 with a control group submitted to surgery between January and March 2017. Percentage of total weight loss (% TWL) and excess weight loss (% EWL) were assessed 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Results: A total number of 203 patients were included in this study, 102 had bariatric surgery during the selected period in 2020 and 101 underwent surgery during the same period in 2017. There was no statistically significant difference in weight loss between the 2017 and 2020 groups which was reported as % TWL (mean 27.08 ± 7.530 vs. 28.03 ± 7.074, 33.87 ± 8.507 vs. 34.07 ± 8.979 and 34.13 ± 9.340 vs. 33.98 ± 9.993; p = 0.371) and % EWL (mean 66.83 ± 23.004 vs. 69.71 ± 17.021, 83.37 ± 24.059 vs. 84.51 ± 21.640 and 83.47 ± 24.130 vs. 84.27 ± 23.651; p = 0.506) at 6, 12, and 24 months post-surgery. Conclusion: Despite social limitations imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown, we found no significant difference between weight loss at 2 years postoperatively in the 2020 group when compared with a control group who underwent bariatric surgery in 2017. These results show that the outcomes of bariatric surgery during the COVID-19 lockdown were comparable with those recorded before the pandemic, supporting the efficacy of bariatric procedures' metabolic effects during the first 2 years after surgery, regardless of lifestyle habits. Background: Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) constitute one of the most common tumours in the sellar region and are often discovered only when associated with compressive symptoms. With the frequent use of brain imaging, there has been an increase in the prevalence of incidentally discovered NFPAs. Aim: We aim to determine the prevalence of incidental diagnosis with NPAs observed over a decade and compare the analytical, clinical and treatment differences between those who were diagnosed either incidentally or symptomatically. We also intend to evaluate the pathology differences between both groups. Methods: We retrospectively analysed patients aged ≥18 years with an apparent NFPA, defined as a pituitary lesion compatible with pituitary adenoma which is not associated with the clinical or biochemical evidence of a hormone‐secreting tumour. Inclusion criteria included normal prolactin level for lesions <9 mm or a prolactin level <100 ng/mL for lesions ≥10 mm in maximal tumour diameter. Results: We included 119 patients [53.8% males; mean age: 56.8 years (SD = 16.7)]. Diagnosis was incidental in 47.1% of patients, and many patients had unappreciated signs and symptoms of pituitary disease. In the symptomatic and incidental groups, 66.7% and 41.1% of patients had hypopituitarism, respectively (p =.005). Only 20.4% of patients incidentally diagnosed had microadenoma (p =.060). Hypopituitarism was present in 18.8% of those patients with microadenomas. Most tumours were macroadenomas (87.4%). Half of those patients diagnosed incidentally were submitted to surgery, compared with 75.8% of those who were diagnosed symptomatically (p =.004). Conclusions: Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas are commonly diagnosed incidentally, with many manifesting symptoms on examination. NFPAs incidentally diagnosed are more commonly macroadenomas and less frequently associated with hypopituitarism than symptomatic. This paper presents the Simulation Management System for Operational Coastal Hydrodynamic Models, or SMS-Coastal, and its novel methodology designed to automate forecast simulations of coastal models. Its working principle features a generic framework that can be easily configured for other applications, and it was implemented with the Python programming language. The system consists of three main components: the Forcing Processor, Simulation Manager, and Data Converter, which perform operations such as the management of forecast runs and the download and conversion of external forcing data. The SMS-Coastal was tested on two model realisations using the MOHID System: SOMA, a model of the Algarve coast in Portugal, and BASIC, a model of the Cartagena Bay in Colombia. Permeable phylogeographic barriers characterize the vast open ocean, boosting gene flow and counteracting population differentiation and speciation of widely distributed and migratory species. However, many widely distributed species consists of distinct populations throughout their distribution, evidencing that our understanding of how the marine environment triggers population and species divergence are insufficient. The sailfish is a circumtropical and highly migratory billfish that inhabits warm and productive areas. Despite its ecological and socioeconomic importance as a predator and fishery resource, the species is threatened by overfishing, requiring innovative approaches to improve their management and conservation status. Thus, we presented a novel high-quality reference genome for the species and applied a seascape genomics approach to understand how marine environmental features may promote local adaptation and how it affects gene flow between populations. We delimit two populations between the Atlantic and Indo-Western Pacific oceans and detect outlier loci correlated with sea surface temperature, salinity, oxygen, and chlorophyll concentrations. However, the most significant explanatory factor that explains the differences between populations was isolation by distance. Despite recent population drops, the sailfish populations are not inbred. For billfishes in general, genome-wide heterozygosity was found to be relatively low compared to other marine fishes, evidencing the need to counteract overfishing effects. In addition, in a climate change scenario, management agencies must implement state-of-the-art sequencing methods, consider our findings in their management plans, and monitor genome-wide heterozygosity over time to improve sustainable fisheries and the long-term viability of its populations. Herein, we present the case report of a 53‐year‐old male patient awaiting heart transplant with amiodarone induced thyrotoxicosis that presented a marked improvement of his cardiac function after total thyroidectomy. Plastic pollution has been observed in many marine environments surrounding the Iberian Peninsula, from the surface water to deeper waters, yet studies on their pathways and accumulation areas are still limited. In this study, a global ocean reanalysis model was combined with a particle-tracking Lagrangian model to provide insights into the pathways and accumulation patterns of microplastics originating in southern Portuguese coastal waters (SW Iberian). The study investigates microplastics floating on the surface as well as submerged at different water depths. Model results suggest that the North Atlantic Gyre is the main pathway for microplastics in surface and subsurface waters, transporting the microplastics southwards and eastwards towards the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands. Currents flowing out of the Mediterranean Sea act as the main pathway for microplastics in deep waters, transporting the microplastics along western Iberia. An average residence time of twenty days in the coastal waters suggests that microplastics do not accumulate close to their sources due to their relatively fast transport to adjacent ocean areas. Notably, a significant proportion of microplastics leave the model domain at all depths, implying that SW Iberia may act as a source of microplastics for the adjacent areas, including the Mediterranean Sea, Morocco, the Canary Islands, Western Iberia, and the Bay of Biscay. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with several other metabolic disorders, which are typically pro-inflammatory states. Body fat content is an important marker of metabolic health and abdominal fat is associated with harmful cardiometabolic outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the association between the risk of NAFLD (through Fatty Liver Index (FLI), and BMI, AST/ALT ratio, and presence of diabetes (BARD)), and anthropometric parameters, predictors of metabolic status, in patients with morbid obesity, and to evaluate the association of FLI and BARD scores with pro-inflammatory markers. We have retrospectively studied patients with morbid obesity followed in our center. In total, 2184 participants were included, with an average age of 42.8 ± 10.6 years, 84.5% being females. We report a positive association of FLI with waist circumference (β = 0.10 [0.09 to 0.11], p < 0.01) and waist-to-hip ratio (β = 8.68 [6.85 to 10.52, p < 0.01]), even after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, diabetes, and dyslipidemia (p < 0.01 for both adjusted models). The associations of BARD with anthropometric measures were significant only in the non-adjusted model. There was a positive association between both FLI and BARD and C-reactive protein. Our results point towards a positive association between waist-to-hip ratio and the risk of hepatic steatosis, and between pro-inflammatory markers and both hepatic steatosis and fibrosis. The shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, is an oceanic pelagic shark species found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. It is frequently caught by pelagic longline fisheries, but despite its commercial importance and ecological significance, little is still known about its biology and ecology at the molecular level. Therefore, we combined two massive parallel sequencing approaches, double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD) and RNA sequencing (RNAseq), for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery in the shortfin mako. The ddRAD yielded a total of 82,676 putative SNPs. For RNAseq, a total of 129,663 putative SNPs were found. After the stricter filtering procedure, 405 SNPs from ddRAD and 1165 SNPs from RNAseq were retained and suitable for further analysis. Annotation analysis of SNPs from ddRAD revealed a total of 55 gene associated SNP markers, of which 32 SNPs (58.2%) are associated with diseases and defense responses, 9 SNPs (16.4%) are associated with developmental process, and 3 SNPs (5.4%) are present in genes involved in the reproductive function. For RNAseq, 739 SNPs were annotated and associated to relevant functions amongst which 10 SNPs (0.53%) were related with reproduction, 6 SNPs (0.32%) with growth, and 9 (0.48%) with locomotion. Overall, the genotyping of the SNPs was followed by the validation of 255 SNPs from ddRAD and 646 for RNAseq in 31 individuals from the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Our results provide valuable sequence resources for future population genomics analysis, comparative genomics, phylogenomics, and molecular evolution of the globally endangered shortfin mako shark. Process‐based models such as the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) can be useful to simulate pasture growth and development. This aim of the study is to parameterise the APSIM‐Tropical Pasture model to simulate Marandu palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu), irrigated and rainfed, under cut‐and‐carry management. Parameterisation was performed with experimental data collected in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil (Experiment 1: 11 growth cycles), and São Carlos, SP, Brazil (Experiment 2: 9 growth cycles). In both experiments, aboveground live biomass, leaf, stem, crown and dead material mass, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area index (LAI) and height were assessed. In Experiment 1, soil water content was measured with a capacitance probe, at depths from 0 to 0.9 m. Calibration was performed for base temperature, light extinction coefficient and radiation use efficiency. The calibrated model proved to be accurate in simulating living biomass, leaf mass, LAI and height for all tested variables. In the irrigated system, the statistics presented values between 0.64 and 0.86 for coefficient of determination (R2), between 0.59 and 0.70 for efficiency coefficient (NSE) and between 0.88 and 0.95 for the Willmott's agreement index (d). For these same variables, in the rainfed system, R2 values ranged from 0.70 to 0.86; NSE from 0.54 to 0.70; and average d was 0.93. The simulation of soil water content showed satisfactory results for rainfed pasture, but was less precise for the irrigated treatment. The calibration of the APSIM‐Tropical Pasture model for Marandu palisade grass resulted in efficient simulations of pasture growth under cut‐and‐carry management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Statin therapy is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. Among bariatric patients, the influence of this therapy on various metabolic outcomes, such as diabetes status and its remission, is largely unknown. Methods This was a retrospective study of 1710 patients who underwent bariatric surgery at our hospital between January/2010 and June/2017. We compared patients with and without statin therapy at baseline, 12 and 24 months after surgery regarding statin use and its impact on several clinical and analytical parameters. Multiple linear regression was performed, adjusting differences for age, sex, surgery type, antidiabetic drugs at baseline, hypertension at baseline, LDL cholesterol ˃ 130 mg/dL, weight variation one year after surgery, and age of obesity onset. Results The overall prevalence of statin use was 20.2% before, 13.6% 12 months after surgery, and 15.0% 24 months after surgery. There was a larger reduction in fasting glucose and HbA1c at 12 and 24 months after surgery among statin-treated patients, with the opposite trend for weight reduction and BMI. Statin-treated patients with diabetes had lower diabetes remission rates (45.3 vs 68.5%) 12 months after surgery, with the highest reduction in HbA1c (1.3±1.3 vs −1.1±1.2%; p=0.042), fasting glucose (−40.8±48.8 vs −30.9±41.6 mg/dL; p=0.028), and insulin (−21.7±28.2 vs −13.4±14.2 mIU/L; p=0.039). The proportion of new-onset cases of diabetes was equal between statin-treated vs non-treated individuals at 12 months (1.9%) and 24 months (1.0%) after surgery. Conclusion Bariatric surgery seems to lead to diabetes remission more frequently in patients not treated with statins. A larger reduction was observed in fasting glucose and HbA1c among statin-treated patients. Statin did not contribute to an increased proportion of new-onset diabetes after surgery. Background: One hour plasma glucose concentration (1hPG) during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) may be an alternative to 2-h plasma glucose concentration (2hPG) in the identification of individuals at increased risk of hyperglycaemia, although its role is not fully understood. Aim: We aim to investigate the relationship of these measures with other glucose parameters, as well as their relationship with cardiometabolic risk markers and the level of agreement for prediabetes mellitus diagnosis, in a sample of patients with morbid obesity. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 656 patients with morbid obesity without diagnosed diabetes. To define prediabetes with 2hPG, 2022 American Diabetes Association guidelines criteria were used, while for 1hPG, glucose ≥ 155 mg/dL was considered. Cohen's Kappa coefficient was used to assess the agreement between both measures of prediabetes mellitus diagnosis. Results: A Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 0.405 (p < 0.001) was obtained. The 1hPG were positively correlated with homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (ρ = 0.281, p < 0.001), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (ρ = 0.581, p < 0.001), glycated haemoglobin (Hb1AC) (ρ = 0.347, p < 0.001) and were negatively correlated with homeostatic model assessment for cell-β function (HOMA-β) (ρ = −0.092, p = 0.018). 2hPG were also correlated with the same parameters, except for HOMA-β. Conclusion: A fair agreement between 1 and 2hPG was verified. 1hPG criteria may be a useful indicator of β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance in patients with morbid obesity without diabetes diagnosis. The angular angelshark (Squatina guggenheim) is a coastal endangered angel shark from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean and one of the major bycatch victims. Despite major concerns about this species, little is known about its evolutionary connectivity across its whole geographic distribution. Here, genetic connectivity and phylogeographic patterns of S. guggenheim for 122 individuals were assessed across the Southwest Atlantic Ocean regions based on a multilocus mitochondrial DNA approach to support conservation strategies. The concatenated mitochondrial dataset (control region, cytochrome b and cytochrome c oxidase I) showed high levels of haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity in S. guggenheim, with distinct genetic diversity patterns among populations. Although signs of stepping-stone gene flow were observed, a strong and statistically significant genetic structure into at least two populations was detected, matching with the species' biological traits and region's oceanographic particularities. Contrasting demographic patterns were detected, in which only southernmost Atlantic populations showed signs of population expansion. Despite the existence of connectivity among regions, our results suggest that conservation plans should be carried out following the uniqueness of each management unit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bariatric surgery (BS) is the most effective therapy for severe obesity, which improves several comorbidities (such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, among others) and results in marked weight loss. Despite these consensual beneficial effects, sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (the two main bariatric techniques) have also been associated with changes in bone metabolism and progressive bone loss. The objective of this literature review is to examine the impact of bariatric surgery on bone and its main metabolic links, and to analyze the latest findings regarding the risk of fracture among patients submitted to bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery (BS) can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however, the evidence on the influence of preoperative serum magnesium levels on this reversal is scarce. To study the influence of preoperative serum magnesium levels on the pre-T2DM and T2DM remission one year after BS. Retrospective study carried out among 1656 patients with obesity who underwent BS in the Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João. T2DM and pre-T2DM remission were defined as being normal glycaemic measures of at least one year's after BS and without pharmacological therapy. To assess the association between preoperative serum magnesium levels and pre- and T2DM remission, logistic regression models, crude and adjusted for sex, age and body mass index were computed. Patients with normoglycaemia presented hypomagnesaemia less often than those patients with pre-T2DM and T2DM (17.0% vs. 21.3% vs. 39.9%) (p < 0.001). One year after BS, 62.9% of patients with pre-T2DM or T2DM before BS showed remission. Adequate magnesium levels were positively associated with T2DM and pre-T2DM remission, one year after BS (OR 1.79; 95% CI 1.34–2.38), independently of sex, age, and body mass index. Since the Miocene profound climatic changes have influenced the biology and ecology of species worldwide, such as their connectivity, genetic population structure, and biogeography. The goal herein is to evaluate the phylogeography of sailfish Istiophorus platypterus between the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Our results evidenced a high genetic diversity and three distinct populations among the ocean basins with limited gene flow among them. In addition, the species is characterized by two deep evolutionary lineages that diverged during the Miocene/Pliocene transition, one of them is circumtropical while the other is restricted to the Atlantic Ocean. These lineages evolved along the successive glacial-interglacial cycles from the Pleistocene and remained isolated from each other in glacial refugium until deglaciation. Assessments of sailfish suggest it may be subject to overfishing and the results herein imply the need to re-evaluate the current stock delimitations and management measures adopted by the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, especially in the Atlantic and the Indo-Western Pacific oceans to effectively manage the species. In addition, this work highlights that both lineages should at least be treated as two distinct management units in the Atlantic Ocean until their taxonomic status is fully resolved, given their high genetic divergence. Extreme climate changes during the Cenozoic Era strengthened different biogeographical barriers that decreased the connectivity among populations, triggering lineage diversification of different species worldwide.The mitochondrial DNA control region was employed to explore the phylogeography of Sphyrna zygaena, a globally distributed species threatened by unsustainable, illegal, unreported and unregulated fisheries triggered by the international shark fin trade. It is listed as 'Vulnerable' by the IUCN Red List and its trade is regulated by CITES Appendix II.Only 13 haplotypes were found with low genetic diversity levels (hd = 0.686 ± 0.014; π = 0.00206 ± 0.00004) compared with other species of the Sphyrnidae family. The species has a very strong phylogeographic population structure among the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans (ΦST = 0.79132). Worldwide, there are six distinct populations with some haplotype sharing.These populations are probably connected by a stepping‐stone dispersal of a small number of migrants per generation from the Indo‐Pacific towards the Atlantic. Modelling suggests that S. zygaena diverged into two lineages around 6.96 million years ago which have been isolated in glacial refuges in the Atlantic and Indo‐Pacific oceans; and after deglaciation, a population expansion probably permitted secondary contact.Conservation plans to establish differentiated management units should be adopted in each of the identified populations. Among these, the Eastern Central Atlantic and West Indo‐Pacific are the most important areas for the species considering the historical migration routes that act as a bridge connecting the Atlantic and Indo‐Pacific Oceans while the Gulf of Guinea connects the Atlantic populations. Still, further studies are required to know if these populations are also linked with nursery areas for the species.The results herein can help to delimit the main evolutionarily significant units to implement effective policies to establish differentiated management units as starting points to genetic monitoring programmes for Sphyrna zygaena. Background: Obesity is a multifactorial disease, which is strongly associated to other metabolic disorders. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment of morbid obesity. The role of beta cell function in weight loss after bariatric surgery is uncertain. Aim: To evaluate the association between beta cell function and percentage of total body weight loss (TBWL%) 1, 2, 3, and 4 years after bariatric surgery in patients with morbid obesity. Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study in patients with morbid obesity followed in our center between January 2010 and July 2018. Patients were excluded if they had diabetes at baseline or missing data on the needed parameters. We evaluated baseline Homeostatic Model Assessment of IR, Homeostatic Model Assessment of β-cell function (HOMA-beta), Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index, and Matsuda and DeFronzo index, and TBWL% at years 1 to 4. Linear regression models were used to evaluate the association of indexes of insulin resistance with TBWL% (unadjusted and adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and type of surgery). Results: There were 1,561 patients included in this analysis. HOMA-beta was negatively associated with TBWL% at second, third, and fourth years post-surgery (β = −1.04 [−1.82 to −0.26], p<0.01; β = −1.16 [−2.13 to −0.19], p=0.02; β = −1.29 [−2.64 to 0.06], p=0.061, respectively). This was not observed in the first year post-surgery nor for the other indexes. Glycemia at baseline was positively associated to EWL% at second and third years post-surgery. Conclusion: β-cell function at baseline seems to be associated to long-term weight loss, explicitly after the first year post bariatric surgery. Introduction: Bariatric surgery (BS) is the most effective therapeutic approach to obesity. It is associated with great gastrointestinal anatomic changes, predisposing the patients to altered nutrient absorption that impacts phosphocalcium metabolism. This study aimed to clarify the prevalence of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and its predictors in patients submitted to BS. Methods: Retrospective study of 1431 patients who underwent metabolic surgery between January 2010 and June 2017 and who were followed for at least 1 year. We compared the clinical and biochemical characteristics of patients with and without secondary hyperparathyroidism (considering SHPT a PTH ˃ 69 pg/mL). Two different analyses were performed: (1) paired analysis of participants before and 1 year after surgery (N = 441); (2) Cross sectional analysis of participants submitted to bariatric surgery before (N = 441), 1 year after (N = 1431) and 4 years after surgery (N = 333). Multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate possible predictors of SHPT after BS. Results: The overall prevalence of SHPT was 24.9% before surgery, 11.2% 1 year after surgery and 21.3% 4 years after surgery. Patients submitted to LAGB had the highest prevalence of SHPT 1 year after surgery (19.4%; vs RYGB, 12.8%, vs SG, 5.3%). Four years after surgery, RYGB had the highest prevalence of SHPT (27.0%), followed by LAGB (13.2%) and SG (6.9%). Higher body mass index and age, decreased levels of vitamin D and RYGB seem to be independent predictors of SHPT 1 year after surgery. The only independent predictor of SHPT 4 years after surgery was RYGB. Conclusion: The prevalence of SHPT is higher before and 4 years after BS than 1 year after surgery. This fact raises some questions about the efficacy of the implemented follow-up plans of vitamin D supplementation on the long term, mainly among patients submitted to RYGB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last years, many studies have reported the challenge of precisely identifying shark and ray species from the fin trade. In Asia, the high demand for shark fin soup has resulted in correspondingly high prices for fins. This, in turn, has caused overexploitation of elasmobranch populations worldwide. Fin processing can cause the loss of morphological characteristics; therefore, species-specific identification can be performed only by DNA analysis. Most studies have reported the presence of threatened and protected elasmobranchs in the Asian trade market, highlighting the failure of current management and conservation policies. Here, were discussed the evolution of DNA-based methods for elasmobranchs identification and presented new approaches toward overcoming the illegal shark and ray fin trade. Firstly, we argued that universal standardized DNA-based methods based on COI and NADH2 should be developed for the main species in international trade. In addition, high throughput sequencing (HTS) protocols should be developed and used to identify previously unknown species from highly processed food containing multiple ingredients, such as shark fin soup. Moreover, we highlight the importance of increasing the knowledge about population genetics data, providing an atlas of geographically distinct DNA polymorphic regions. Such genetic data will allow geographic traceability of shark and ray products exported to Asia in order to identify hotspots of finning practice, thereby providing a roadmap to indicate hotspots where effective law enforcement needs to be implemented. The knowledge of the population structure of a given species is of great importance for its conservation and for the management of its fishing exploitation, especially for sharks. The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier Péron&Lesueur, 1822) is an apex predator species that is currently listed as "Near Threatened" on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In this study, the tiger shark's genetic structure in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (MRR) and oceanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha (FN) was investigated based on one mitochondrial and two nuclear DNA markers. In addition, sequenced data from other geographic sites were added into the mitochondrial analysis. The data showed moderate‐to‐high genetic diversity, and it is consistent with good resilience of G. cuvier in ecological terms. The structuring tests reinforced a global distinction of the species in two lineages, one being from the Indo‐Pacific and the other from the North Atlantic. Also, this analysis showed the close relationship between tiger sharks from Indo‐Pacific and South‐eastern coast of Brazil. The Bayesian and AMOVA tests indicated that tiger sharks from FN and MRR are genetically similar, forming a cohesive population. These analyses support live specimen translocations from beaches (where the attacks occur) to distant marine areas given we detected a historical cohesive population occurring between those beaches from MRR and FN Islands where the sharks migrate. Seasonality in tropical forage production is common in tropical and subtropical regions and should be identified for decision making on the stocking rate for each period. This study aimed to evaluate the variability of dry matter production of Megathyrsus maximum cv. Mombaça 'Guinea grass' over two years. The experiment was carried out from February 2016 to August 2018, under a randomised block design in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, with four replications. Treatments consisted of (i) two growing years (2016/2017 and 2017/2018) and (ii) four seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter). The grass was fertilised with 1,000 kg N ha−1 year−1 and sprinkler irrigated, with soil moisture monitored by tensiometry. The evaluated parameters consisted of leaf dry matter, stem dry matter and total dry matter production. The results showed that the irrigated Guinea grass reached an elevated production of dry matter (DM), with the highest yields occurring in the spring/summer period, evidencing the yiel gap in the autumn/winter. The grass showed high daily forage accumulation, expressing high productive potential, demonstrating a good indicator for animal production in intensive systems with irrigated and fertilised pastures for regions of tropical climate. Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the association between vitamin D status and hepatic function parameters and scores: Fatty Liver Index (FLI, predictor of hepatic steatosis) and BARD (BMI, AST/ALT ratio and DM, predictor of hepatic fibrosis) in patients with morbid obesity. Patients and Methods: Cross-sectional study including patients with morbid obesity followed in our centre between January 2010 and July 2018. Patients with missing vitamin D levels or hepatic profile parameters were excluded. We divided the population according to two cut-offs of vitamin D levels (12ng/mL and 20ng/mL). Results: The included population (n=1124) had an average age of 43.3± 10.7 years and 84.3% were female. Seventy-point eight percent of the population had vitamin D levels lower than 20ng/mL and 34.8% lower than 12ng/dL. Patients with lower vitamin D levels (< 12ng/mL) had higher BMI, hip and waist circumferences and higher prevalence of hypertension. Higher FLI scores [OR= 0.77 (0.07), p< 0.01] and ALP levels [β= − 0.03 (− 0.06, − 0.01), p< 0.01] associated to lower vitamin D levels. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher risk of hepatic steatosis in individuals with morbid obesity. Correction of vitamin D deficiency may have a beneficial role in the management of NAFLD in patients with morbid obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Despite the abundance of data addressing the influence of patient's age on surgery-related complications, its impact on cardiometabolic outcomes following bariatric surgery has been overlooked. Methods: Retrospective unicentric study of 1,728 obese patients who underwent bariatric surgery between January 2010 and June 2015. Patients were divided in 3 age groups, according to their age at surgery: ˂40 (n = 751), 40–59 (n = 879), and ≥60 years (n = 98). Parameters with cardiometabolic impact, such as body anthropometric measures, lipid profile, and glycemic status, before and 24 months after surgery, were compared between these groups. A multiple linear regression was performed, adjusting differences between groups for sex, surgery type, and body mass index variation. Results: The group ˂40 years presented more weight loss (–35.4 ± 9.0 kg, p ˂ 0.001), greater BMI reduction (–15.8 ± 6.1 kg/m2, p ˂ 0.001), and larger changes in waist (–34 ± 13.8 cm, p ˂ 0.001) and hip circumferences (–28.7 ± 11.9 cm, p ˂ 0.05). The group of ≥60 years presented the heaviest reduction in fasting glucose (–17.7 ± 32.8 mg/dL, p ˂ 0.001) and HbA1c (0.7 ± 1.0, p ˂ 0.001), and also had a tendency to have the biggest changes in systolic blood pressure (–14.7 ± 18.7 mm Hg, p = 0.071). Conclusion: Patients with ≥60 years benefit the most from bariatric surgery regarding cardiometabolic parameters, presenting heavier reductions in fasting glucose, as well as HbA1c and a tendency towards a higher decrease in systolic blood pressure. To determine the effect of rivers, environmental conditions, and isolation by distance on the distribution of species in Amazonia. Location: Brazilian Amazonia. Time period: Current. Major taxa studied: Birds, fishes, bats, ants, termites, butterflies, ferns + lycophytes, gingers and palms. We compiled a unique dataset of biotic and abiotic information from 822 plots spread over the Brazilian Amazon. We evaluated the effects of environment, geographic distance and dispersal barriers (rivers) on assemblage composition of animal and plant taxa using multivariate techniques and distance- and raw-data-based regression approaches. Environmental variables (soil/water), geographic distance, and rivers were associated with the distribution of most taxa. The wide and relatively old Amazon River tended to determine differences in community composition for most biological groups. Despite this association, environment and geographic distance were generally more important than rivers in explaining the changes in species composition. The results from multi-taxa comparisons suggest that variation in community composition in Amazonia reflects both dispersal limitation (isolation by distance or by large rivers) and the adaptation of species to local environmental conditions. Larger and older river barriers influenced the distribution of species. However, in general this effect is weaker than the effects of environmental gradients or geographical distance at broad scales in Amazonia, but the relative importance of each of these processes varies among biological groups. Background: An association between hypothyroidism and the risk of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has been suggested. This association remains to be elucidated in patients with morbid obesity. Aim: To evaluate the association between thyroid function and parameters of liver function and hepatic scores in patients with morbid obesity. Methods: Patients with morbid obesity followed in our center between January 2010 and July 2018 were included. The ones without evaluation of liver and thyroid functions were excluded. Fatty Liver Index (FLI) and BARD scores were used as predictors of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis, respectively. Results: We observed a positive association between TSH and both BARD (OR 1.14; p = 0.035) and FLI (OR 1.19; p = 0.010) in the unadjusted analysis. We found a negative association between free triiodothyronine levels and BARD (OR 0.70; p<0.01) and a positive association between free triiodothyronine levels and FLI (OR 1.48; p = 0.022). Concerning liver function, we found a positive association between total bilirubin and free thyroxine levels (β = 0.18 [0.02 to 0.35]; p = 0.033) and a negative association between total bilirubin and free triiodothyronine levels (β = −0.07 [−0.14 to −0.002]; p = 0.042). Conclusion: Higher levels of TSH and free triiodothyronine may be associated with a higher risk of NAFLD, particularly steatosis, in patients with morbid obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Anemia in obese patients is common and multifactorial and is also a complication of bariatric surgery. The aim of this study is to establish which variables are associated with a higher prevalence of post-bariatric surgery anemia. Methods: Retrospective cohort study involving 1999 patients submitted to bariatric surgery with a follow-up period of 4 years. Anthropometric, laboratorial parameters and the presence of comorbidities were evaluated before surgery and during follow-up. Patients were divided into two groups, according to whether they developed anemia, or not. Groups were compared using independent sample T-tests or Chi-squared tests, as appropriate. Univariate binary logistic regression models were used to test the association between the diagnosis of anemia during follow-up and all the possible explanatory variables. Independent variables with an association with the outcome (p < 0.1) were included in multivariate binary logistic regression models, as well as possible confounders (age, BMI, and supplementation). Results: Anemia was diagnosed in 24.4% of the patients. Females present a two-fold increased risk of developing anemia (OR 2.11, 95% CI 1.48–3.01, p < 0.001). Patients subjected to gastric sleeve and gastric band surgery present approximately half the risk of anemia when compared with gastric bypass surgery (RYGB) (OR 0.46, 95% CI 0.35–0.59, p < 0.001; OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.36–0.72, p < 0.001). None of the other variables evaluated showed association with the outcome. Conclusion: In our study, the only factors associated with an increased risk of developing anemia were female gender and RYBG surgery. Purpose: To evaluate the variation in parameters of hepatic function and in the scores Fatty Liver Index (FLI; predictor of hepatic steatosis) and BARD (BMI, AST/ALT ratio and DM, predictor of hepatic fibrosis), 1 year after bariatric surgery. Material and Methods: This is a observational retrospective cohort study in patients with morbid obesity that underwent bariatric surgery in our centre. We used two linear regression models: (1) unadjusted and (2) adjusted for surgery type, sex, age, body mass index, diabetes, and dyslipidaemia. Results: The included population (n = 1955) had an average age of 43.1 ± 10 years and 85.8% were female. Diabetes was present in 32.4% of the patients, 45.1% had dyslipidaemia, and 62.2% had hypertension. Twelve percent were submitted to gastric band, 29.6% to sleeve gastrectomy, and 58.4% to gastric bypass. We observed a relevant decrease in transaminases and gamma-glutamyltransferase, and an increase in alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin. Both FLI and BARD markedly decrease 1 year after surgery (p < 0.01). Comparing the surgical procedures, sleeve gastrectomy was associated with a greater reduction of hepatic enzymes and of both FLI and BARD compared with gastric band. Comparing with gastric bypass, sleeve was associated with a greater reduction of transaminases and alkaline phosphatase, but a smaller reduction of FLI and BARD. Conclusion: Bariatric surgery is associated with a reduction of the hepatic enzymes and an improvement of FLI and BARD. It may represent an effective therapeutic approach for NAFLD. Diabetic retinopathy causes vascular damage to retinal neurons, presenting characteristics of chronic inflammation. The development of new therapies capable of combating vision loss involves knowledge of inflammatory retinal changes. Studies in animal models and patients with diabetes have shown a high expression of the inflammatory molecules that are involved in the progression of diabetic retinopathy. Uveal melanoma is an eye tumour that remains highly deadly, because despite the correct treatment, it still causes metastasis in about 50% of patients. This type of tumour has the ability to produce and store melanin, which may result in resistance to therapy. Over time there has been development of new therapies for this disease, such as radiotherapy and surgical resection. In this review, we discuss diabetic retinopathy and ocular melanoma, their relationship with angiogenesis and the current anti-angiogenic therapies for their treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and parathormone (PTH) have an inverse relation. The 25(OH)D threshold required to maximally suppress PTH has been used as a marker of optimal vitamin D status. Obesity is associated with lower serum levels of 25(OH)D and higher levels of PTH; however, the relation between these hormones in this setting is not well established. We aimed to assess the influence of excessive weight and weight loss after bariatric surgery on the relation between serum 25(OH)D and PTH. Methods: Anthropometric and analytical parameters of phospho-calcium metabolism from 290 patients undergoing bariatric surgery were analyzed. The association between 25(OH)D and PTH before and 1 year after surgery was evaluated through Student's t test and simple and multivariable linear regression. Results: At baseline, there was an inverse association between 25(OH)D and PTH plasma levels (β = − 0.571; p = 0.001). The threshold for a significant increase of PTH at baseline was a 25(OH)D level of < 10 ng/mL (p < 0.001). At 1 year after surgery (n = 194), the association between the two variables was weaker (β = − 0.291; p = 0.014). The 25(OH)D threshold for a significant increase in serum PTH levels was lower in patients who maintained obesity (n = 77) [25(OH)D 5 vs 10 ng/mL]. Conclusions: PTH suppression threshold observed in patients with morbid obesity before and after bariatric surgery is lower than that described for the general population, suggesting that the 25(OH)D plasma levels may not be representative of the body's vitamin D reserves. Other studies are required to demonstrate which optimal vitamin D levels need to be aimed for in obesity, in order to improve obese patients' bone health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The association between obesity and depression has been repeatedly established. However, little is known about the impact that the diagnosis of depression before bariatric surgery (DDBS) may have on weight loss. Objective: To evaluate the impact of DDBS on weight outcomes. Methods: Retrospective study of patients submitted to BS. Patients with no weight, no current medication data, or those submitted to revision surgery were excluded. Patients were considered to have DDBS based on taking antidepressants prior to BS or if there was a medical history of past or current depression. Patients with and without a depression history were compared using independent t test. A multivariate logistic regression model was created to evaluate predictors of weight variation (variables included: age, sex, and type of surgery). Results: A total of 616 patients did not have a history of depression and 230 had DDBS. There was a statistically significant difference in the BMI variation between groups. On average, individuals with DDBS lost 1.4 kg/m2 less than those without DDBS. In the multivariate analysis, the group with DDBS, compared with the group without DDBS, presented on average less –0.9 kg/m2 (95% CI –1.7 to –0.2, p = 0.018) BMI variation. Conclusion: DDBS is a predictor of lower weight loss after the surgical procedure. Even after adjusting for confounding variables such as age, sex, and BS type, this effect remains. Sharks developed life history traits that make them susceptible to overfishing. This is, in turn, a risk for extinction, and several species are affected. The high price of shark fins in the international trade has triggered the widespread capture of sharks at unsustainable levels, prompting illegal and unethical practices, such as finning. To address these concerns, the present study aimed to identify species composition using molecular techniques based on DNA barcoding and DNA polymorphism on samples taken from illegal shark fin seizures conducted by the Federal Environmental Agency of Brazil. A species-specific DNA-based identification from three finning seizures in Brazil found at least 20 species from 747 shark fins, some of which were identified as endangered and protected under Brazilian legislation, while others were representative of restricted catches, according to Appendix II of CITES. In the seizure from Belém, 338 fins were identified as belonging to at least 19 different species, while in the seizure from Natal 211, fins belonging to at least 8 different species were identified. Furthermore, 198 fins from Cananéia were identified through PCR-Multiplex as belonging to Isurus oxyrinchus. These results raise concerns about the environmental and socioeconomic effects of finning on developing countries. Furthermore, this study represents the first finning evaluation from Brazil in the Southwest Atlantic, highlighting the importance of developing policies aimed toward restricting and regulating the shark trade and detecting IUU fisheries and illegal trade of endangered species, mainly in developing countries, where fisheries management, surveillance, and species-specific fisheries catch data are often sporatic. The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a common widespread coastal–pelagic shark species whose population genetic structure has only recently been the object of genetic studies.In this study, the tiger's shark mitochondrial DNA control region was sequenced for a sample of 172 individuals from the western Atlantic and from Australia's east coast in the Pacific Ocean.The results show a moderate variation in genetic diversity (h = 0.615 ± 0.038, π = 0.00184 ± 0.00021) with a strong population structure between Atlantic areas (ΦST = 0.28141, P = 0.00001).The maternal lineage has high site fidelity, which paradoxically is coupled with connectivity across open ocean stretches to Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, which is identified as an important hotspot for this species. These results help with the understanding of what drives the displacement of this shark, at intra‐ and/or inter‐ocean basins levels, and can help inform the implementation of future conservation and management measures.We recommend that the conservation of genetic diversity should be maintained at a global level and its maintenance should be pursued diligently in all populations of tiger shark. As the Fernando de Noronha region in the western Atlantic appears to contain the largest global genetic diversity of the species, this area should be treated as a marine reserve or ecological refuge for the tiger shark. Population structure and genetic connectivity are pivotal contributions to the establishment of conservation strategies for fisheries management, in particular for highly migratory species that are affected by commercial fisheries. This study used partial sequences of mitochondrial DNA control region to determine the genetic structure of the bigeye thresher shark Alopias superciliosus in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. A total of 858 base pairs of mtDNA CR from 228 individuals were analyzed. The resulting nucleotide diversity (π) was 0.0011 ± 0.0008 and the haplotype diversity (h) was 0.127 ± 0.030. These are the lowest diversities registered in elasmobranchs with this genetic marker. Two genetically distinct lineages were identified, one of them represented by 3.9% of the analyzed individuals and none restricted to any particular area. Simulated scenarios of population structure, tested with AMOVA and pairwise ΦST did not result in significant values indicating high connectivity among all sampled groups. The absence of population structure, even between Atlantic and Indian Oceans, corroborates the high dispersal ability of this species. The low genetic diversity detected in this species and the identification of two historical lineages occurring in sympatry, one represented by a very small number of individuals, should be considered in the conservation efforts and management plans of A. superciliosus. Tambaqui ( Colossoma macropomum) is a fish species from the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, with favorable characteristics to the cultivation system and great market acceptance in South America. However, the construction of a genetic map for the genetic improvement of this species is limited by the low number of molecular markers currently described. Thus, this study aimed to validate gene-associated and anonymous (non-genic) microsatellites obtained by next generation sequencing (RNA-seq and whole genome shotgun-WGS, respectively), for future construction of a genetic map and search for quantitative trait loci (QTL) in this species. In the RNA-seq data, the observed and expected heterozygosity (H and H) ranged from 0.09 to 0.73, and 0.09 to 0.85, respectively. In the WGS data, H and H ranged from 0.33 to 0.95, and 0.28 to 0.92, respectively. In general, the evaluation of 200 markers resulted in 45 polymorphic loci, of which 14 were gene-associated (RNA-Seq) and 31 were anonymous (WGS). Moreover, some markers were related to genes of the immune system, biological regulation/control and biogenesis. This study contributes to increase the number of molecular markers available for genetic studies in C. macropomum, which will allow the development of breeding programs assisted by molecular markers.
