The real-time monitoring of ocean wave data is a crucial element in marine environmental monitoring and the development of marine resources. It is unfortunate that the majority of wave measurement devices remain challenging, relatively high-priced, and require sophisticated technology. This study investigates the validation of a new type of ocean wave measurement, designed based on the mini wave gauge (MWG), using low-cost materials. The study utilizes an accelerometer sensor, specifically the ADXL335, which is converted to measure wave height, and the GY-271 designed to measure wave direction. This research addresses the validation of MWG by comparing measurements from the acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) and HOBO. The validation of wave height demonstrates high accuracy, with a MAPE percentage of 0.46% between MWG and ADCP, and 23.30% between MWG and HOBO. In contrast, the validation of MWG for wave direction by ADCP still requires improvement, with a MAPE of 36.75%. This is due to the sensor's sensitivity to the earth's magnetic field, which requires further improvement of the buoy design to accommodate the direction of incoming waves. This research aims to understand the extent of microplastic contamination in Pekalongan waters, Central Java, and its potential impact on fishing grounds, aligning with Indonesia's National Action Plan for Handling Marine Debris 2018–2025. The study employs a 2D hydrodynamics modelling approach with Mike 21 Software to map the spatial distribution of microplastic movement concerning fishing areas during the west and east monsoon seasons. The results showed that microplastic particles follow tidal currents in Pekalongan waters, with their movement influenced by factors such as current, wind, and tidal conditions. The trajectory of microplastics entering fishing ground areas poses potential contamination risk for fish caught by fishermen, threatening the health of marine ecosystems and the stability of their structure and function. Anthropogenic activities on land will affect the carbon system in coastal waters. This condition will affect the role of coastal waters as a source or sink of carbon. This research will examine the distribution of carbonate systems and estimate CO2 fluxes. Water samples were taken at 30 stations as well as measuring in situ water parameters including pH, temperature, salinity, and pressure. Alkalinity was analysed based on the titration method, chl-a using the fluorometer method, and carbonate system parameters (pCO2(sea) and DIC) calculated using CO2SYS.xlsm. The pCO2(atm) value is calculated based on atmospheric data from satellite data, including the saturation vapour pressure of sea air in the atmosphere, fraction mol of CO2, and sea level pressure. Pearson correlation analysis was used to see the correlation between the measured parameters and CO2 flux. Carbon flux is determined based on the difference between atmospheric and oceanic pCO2. The DIC calculation result was in the range of 1,946.09 µmol/kg - 2,061.65 µmol/kg and the total alkalinity was 2,156.86 µmol/kg - 2,264.71 µmol/kg. Based on this value, Jepara coastal waters have pCO2(sea) of 573,800 micro-atmospheric (µatm) which is higher than pCO2(atm) (i.e., 386,772 µatm). The input of organic/inorganic carbon resulting from anthropogenic processes on land has influenced Jepara coastal waters which act as a source of CO2 into the atmosphere amounting to 103,799 mmol/m2/day. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to examine the variations in Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) levels in the waters located to the south of Java Island throughout the past quarter-century. This study employs satellite data and reanalysis data gathered from multiple sources spanning the period between September 1997 and December 2022. The application of EOF analysis revealed that the most notable elevation in Chl-a contents took place during the seasons of SON (September, October, November) and DJF (December, January, February) in the years 1997/1998 and 2006/2007. It has been determined that this significant increase in Chl-a content in southern Java is contingent upon the fulfillment of a number of circumstances. These conditions are associated with climatic patterns in the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. An elevation in Chl-a content was seen throughout the months of SON and DJF in instances where the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) had a positive phase. The concurrent occurrence of a powerful positive IOD and El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean is highly probable to result in a substantial elevation in Chl-a content in the southern region of Java. In addition, our findings indicate that the phenomenon of Kelvin wave upwelling significantly contributes to the elevation of Chl-a levels during the months of June, July, August (JJA), and SON. Microplastics (MPs) are discovered in various places even encroaching on marine protected areas (MPA). The aim of this research is to investigate the occurrences of MPs pollutant in MPA and non-MPA in Karimunjawa National Park (KNP). The results showed that MPs from sea surface water were higher in MPA than non-MPA with range as 47.89-106.20 items/L, dominated by fragment, 1-50 µm size, black color and HDPE, LDPE, PP, Nylon, PVC, ABS, and PET in polymer types. It induced since it supplied from it surrounding, specifically the south of MPA, whereas there have been cottage constructions generating many marine debris. These findings indicate that occurrence of MPs still dominantly influenced from anthropogenic activity. The waters that surround the Indonesian archipelago are home to some of the most fruitful primary resources that can be found anywhere in the southeastern Indian Ocean. In this work, an investigation of seasonal fluctuations in nutrient content within the region, utilizing 30-years reanalysis data generated by Copernicus Marine Service, was presented. The month of September, October, November (SON) exhibits the maximum concentration of nitrate content, primarily observed in the southern region of Java and the Lombok Strait. The concentrations of nitrates experience significant changes that are notably impacted by Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) occurrences. Specifically, a positive IOD event is associated with elevated nitrate levels, particularly during the period spanning from June to December. Furthermore, in the southern Java region, an inverse correlation was identified between nitrate concentrations and surface zonal currents, commonly referred to as the South Java Current (SJC). Concurrently, the reinforcement of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) in the Lombok Strait is consistently accompanied by an elevation in nitrate concentration within the southern region. The fluctuation of suspended particulate matter (SPM) is essential to the biogeochemical cycle and ecological health of coastal waters. Anthropogenic activities potentially trigger an increase in SPM, so it needs to be monitored continuously. Spatial and temporal monitoring of SPM can be carried out cost-effectively with broad coverage using a remote sensing application. This study aims to build the SPM algorithm and estimate its temporal variability. The algorithm model in this study is based on an empirical formula between field data and reflectance data with the same acquisition. Water samples were taken from 100 stations in July 2022. Half were used for model building and the other for model validation. Suspended Particulate Matter was determined gravimetrically and estimated their temporal variability was based on Landsat 9 image records from December 2021 - November 2022. The results of the analysis show that the best algorithm for SPM estimation can be built based on coastal aerosol canals (B1), blue canals (B2), and green canals (B3) with the accuracy test result of (R² = 0.68; RMSE = 5.551 mg.L-1; MAPE= 7.07%; Bias= 0.28). The SPM temporal fluctuations were generally higher in the west monsoon and lowered in the east monsoon, ranging from 30 to 70 mg.L-1. On the other hand, the spatial distribution shows a higher magnitude in the estuary than in the offshore waters, with a deviation of about 30 mg.L-1. Phytoplankton growth is influenced by the presence of nutrients N (nitrogen) and P (phosphor). Each region has a specific N/P ratio, due to the influence of anthropogenic inputs. This study aimed to assess the response of phytoplankton chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) biomass due to differences in N/P ratio by the influence of river flow in the north coast of Java; Jobokuto Bay (Jepara), the coastal waters of Semarang and the front of the Cisadane river. N-nutrients were analyzed in the form of N-NO3 (nitrate), and N-NH4+ (ammonium ions), and orthophosphate ions (P-PO42-). Nutrient analysis was spectrometric, using the reduction methods (nitrate), ammonium (indophenolblue), and phosphate (molybdenum-blue). Test for site differences using Kruskall-Wallis, followed by a posthoc test. The results showed that Semarang waters had a lower N/P (Stoichiometric) ratio than Jepara and Cisadane, which can be used to predict that P nutrient input is higher than N. This high P input impacts microalgal development (chlorophyll-a). In addition, we also found Semarang waters to have higher speciation of inorganic N in the form of ammonium, which is one of the drivers of eutrophication in these waters. The use of a ratio of N/P is very important in estimating the eutrophication process and can be used to estimate the dominance of nutrients entering the water due to anthropogenic activities in the upstream area. Banjir Kanal Barat (BKB) and Banjir Kanal Timur (BKT) are widely used for various community activities such as residential areas, industry, fish cultivation, and auction. Community activity around BKB and BKT will affect N and P nutrient inputs, which further affects phytoplankton abundance. In this study, phytoplankton biomass was estimated through chlorophyll-a (chl-a) measurements. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of the chl-a and determine the influence of phosphate and nitrate in front of the estuary from BKB and BKT. Sampling was carried out at 8 stations from each estuary and was carried out in the dry season. The concentration of chl-a, phosphate, and nitrate is further described in the form of a distribution pattern based on the interpolation method with ArcGIS 10.2 software. The results showed that the average ± sd of chl-a, respectively was 15,781 ± 16.90 mg/m3 and 17,710 ± 15.31 mg/m3, phosphate was 0.0174 ± 0.0057 ppm and 0.0096 ± 0.0164 ppm, nitrate was 2.9086 ± 1.1824 ppm and 1.6919 ± 1.6316 ppm. The distribution pattern of chlorophyll-a and phosphate decreases in concentration towards the sea, while nitrate forms an irregular pattern and has a different pattern in each estuary. The Kendal Regency area is one of the areas on the northern coast of Central Java that has been experiencing rapid industrial development. The high human activity in this area will impact the quality of water in these surrounding areas and affect the fertility of the waters. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM) are major water quality parameters that can be retrieved using remotely sensed data. The retrieval satellite of the 3 OLCI chosen in this study has a 300 m spatial resolution. This study aimed to see the distribution and effect of total suspended matter (TSM) on chlorophyll-a based on measurement and retrieval of Sentinel 3 imagery using the linear regression method. The results show the chlorophyll-a distribution and the value from retrieval satellite are higher and occur over larger surface area compared to chlorophyll-a measurements. The linear regression model of chlorophyll-a by retrieval satellite imagery and measurement is y = 0.65x + 4.65 with R2 = 0.54. The presence of high amounts of suspended solids in the waters causes disturbances in the reflectance values, which are recorded by the retrieval of satellite. The model regression chlorophyll-a with TSM accuracy from retrieval satellite results in the equation y = -0.0416x + 5.14 (R2 = 0.45, p = 0.05, n = 13). The determination (R2) coefficient value is 0.445, which means that suspended solids have a 44.5% effect on chlorophyll-a and 55.5% is influenced by other factors and not examined in this study. The results show that TSM has an influence on the accuracy of chlorophyll-a and retrieval satellite recording can be disrupted if waters have high turbidity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Kendal River estuary receives nutrient input from various community activities from the surrounding waters and will indirectly affect the physical and biological quality parameters of the waters. Phytoplankton biomass is a parameter of biological quality, which can be measured based on the concentration of chlorophyll-a, while suspended particulate matter (SPM) is a parameter of its physical quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of nutrients and suspended particulate matter and their effect on chlorophyll-a in the Kendal River Estuary. This research was conducted in November 2017. Sampling was carried out at 12 stations representing river, coastal and high seas areas. Chlorophyll-a and nutrients N & P, were measured based on the spectrometric method and SPM using the gravimetric method. Spatial distribution of each parameter using kriging interpolation with ArcGIS. The results showed that chlorophyll-a, nitrate, phosphate, and SPM had a similar spatial distribution pattern, which was high in the estuary area and decreased in concentration towards the sea. The results of the multiple linear regression model analysis between chlorophyll-a on nutrients and SPM followed the formula [chl-a] = -11275 + 5.249 [NO3 -] + 6.987 [PO4 2-] + 0.004 [SPM], with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.76 . Lake Rawa Pening is a natural lake in the Semarang Regency of Central Java Province, Indonesia, and its existence is pivotal to the surrounding communities as it provides ecological, economic, and social benefits. The ecosystem health of Rawa Pening can be represented by chlorophyll-a concentration because it indicates phytoplankton biomass, nutrient availability, and fish resources. Hence, the present study aims to disentangle the monthly variability of surface chlorophyll-a in Rawa Pening Lake by analyzing water samples that were collected once a month from nine stations within five-month observations (September 2020 to January 2021). The samples were analyzed using spectrophotometric method. Results showed that the highest surface chlorophyll-a concentration (23.33 mg/m3) took place in December, while the lowest concentration (12.64 mg/m3) occurred in October. The monthly variability of surface chlorophyll-a was likely controlled by variation of rainfall, with the highest (18.72 mm) and the lowest (12.33 mm) rainfall happened in December and October, respectively. The present study also indicates the anthropogenic activities such as agricultural activities, floating food stands, aquaculture, and tourist boats may contribute to surface chlorophyll-a variability in Rawa Pening Lake. We investigate the distribution of various fractions phosphorus (P) in sediments at the coastal area of Semarang City. Samples were collected from thirteen locations at the Banjir Kanal Barat, port and Banjir Kanal Timur. Sedimentary parameters such as sand, silt, clay, and organic carbon were analysed in order to find out their relation with various P fractions. The sediment types are predominantly sandy and silty with low clay content. Among all fractions (loosely bound/Ads-P), bound calcium/Ca-P), iron bound/Fe-P), and organic fraction/OP), Ca-P fractions constitute the largest portion (71.2 %) followed by iron-bound (17.0 %), organic fraction (10.4 %) and loosely bound (1.4 %). The bioavailable P fractions range from 20.2 % to 42.0 % of the total P (TP) content with average 28.8 %. Relatively high Ads-P content is observed in offshore locations with comparatively high mud percentage as compared with the near-shore locations. The order of abundance of the main forms of P in the Semarang coastal surface sediments is as follows: Ca-P > Fe-P > OP > Ads-P. The Java Sea acts as a carbon source that contributes to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The blue carbon ecosystems in the Karimunjawa Islands may absorb and store the carbon released from the Java Sea. The carbon stock in Kemujan Island (Karimunjawa Islands), one of these blue carbon ecosystems, was previously estimated using a remote sensing approach. In the present study, we investigated the carbon stock in the seagrass bed at Kemujan Island by conducting field observations and laboratory analysis. The result shows that there are only two seagrass species in the study area--'Enhalus acoroides' and 'Thalassia hemprichii'--which are categorized as nearly dense and very dense, respectively. Regarding the carbon biomass, the carbon stock below the substrate is more than that above the substrate. However, the carbon stock in the seagrass biomass is less than in the sediment. The average carbon stock in the seagrass bed at Kemujan Island is 4901.91 g C/m2, which is much more than the amount estimated by means of remote sensing. Furthermore, this amount is much larger compared with the average carbon stock of other areas in the Karimunjawa Islands. The investigation of spatial changes in phytoplankton biomass and turbidity provide essential information for the survival of the coral reef ecosystem. The phytoplankton biomass variations are driven by many factors, such as nutrient inputs from anthropogenic and natural. In turn, turbidity is determined by sediment resuspension or transport from terrestrial systems. The estimation of phytoplankton biomass is represented by the chlorophyll-a concentration. This study aimed to analyze the chlorophyll-a dynamics to water quality parameters, such as turbidity, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and temperature. The in-situ data gathered at 26 stations in the waters of the Barrang Caddi Island in August 2020. The results show that chlorophyll-a and turbidity have a negative correlation in the western and eastern regions, since turbidity inhibits the rate of photosynthesis and causes the decreasing of phytoplankton biomass. Nevertheless, the highest concentration of chlorophyll-a was found in the southern location, in small spots around islands and reefs, including near Barrang Caddi Island. This study investigates the concentration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) using the data of field observation and MODIS Aqua imagery. The field observation data were retrieved by using a conventional method and processed using spectrometric analysis. This study covers the coastal and near land areas which have different levels of anthropogenic activity. The results showed that the coastal waters of Semarang with a high level of anthropogenic activity persistently show a concentration of chlorophyll a (chl-a) twice as large as Jepara coastal waters. This comparison value is obtained based on imagery and field data. Meanwhile, the ratio of chl-a field data in each region shows a value of ±5 times greater than the MODIS data. Field observation data shows a higher value than the MODIS Aqua imagery data. The use of imagery data can be employed as a method of monitoring the eutrophication process on the coast. On the basis of the chlorophyll a classification and field observations, the coastal water of Semarang are classified as eutropic waters and Jepara is categorized as mesotropic category. The classification results will be different if monitoring is carried out using the image data with a location far from the mainland, the Semarang waters are included in the mesotropic category (> 2 mg·m-3) and Jepara is included in the oli gotropic water category (< 2 mg·m-3). The speciation of particulate inorganic phosphate (PIP) in waters is still rarely studied, unlike the dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) which is often used in the assessment of the water quality parameters and their effect on the presence of chlorophyll a. This research aimed at determinig the relationship between DIP and PIP and its effect on the concentration of chlorophyll-a. This research was conducted in the waters of Semarang and Jepara, in different seasons (Rainy and dry). Speciation from PIP was obtained through an extraction process using 1 M HCL and continued with phosphate analysis using the molybdenum blue method, as in the DIP analysis. The linear model was used to find an equation and determine the variables that affect chlorophyll a. Our results showed that the distribution patterns of DIP, PIP and Chlorophyll-a have different patterns in the two study areas and different seasons. The concentration of DIP is always high in the Semarang waters, and is followed by a high chlorophyll-a response. A different pattern was found in the Jepara waters, where the chlorophyll-a response is high in the east monsoon. The relationship of Chl-a to DIP was very significant in the west season in the waters of Semarang and the Jepara region in the east season (p <0.05). The relationship of chlorophyll a to DIP in the Semarang and Jepara waters produced an equation, Chl a = -56.565 + 76.672 (DIP) with a coefficient of determination R2 = 0.478, at a significant level (p) = 0.004 and Chl a = -25.844 + 68.827 (DIP) with value of R2 = 0.421 at a significance level of p = 0.007, respectively. Novel and long-term satellite data (2003–2017) are analyzed to investigate the variability of ocean surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration off the Western Lesser Sunda Islands (WLSI) under the influence of the Indonesian Australian monsoon, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). In this article, we first analyzed the seasonal variability of Chl-a, and then describe the relationship among the sea surface Chl-a, sea surface temperature (SST), and sea surface wind stress in the region. Our results demonstrate that prevailing southeasterly wind stress plays a pivotal role in generating the Chl-a maxima off the WLSI. Particularly on seasonal time scale, the strengthening of southeasterly wind stress (up to ∼0.01 N·m−2) during the southeast monsoon season produces enhanced Chl-a concentrations (0.59 mg·m−3) associated with sea surface cooling (∼28.8 °C) in the area of study. In contrast, the Chl-a maxima completely vanished during the northwest monsoon season. On interannual time scale, the largest positive Chl-a and wind stress anomalies and the coolest SST anomaly are observed in 2006 when El Niño and positive IOD events occur at the same time. Meanwhile, the greatest negative Chl-a anomaly is prevailed during the 2016 negative IOD event. This research examines the eutrophication process mainly by considering the chlorophyll-a concentration. A simple linear model was used to determine the correlation between Chlorophyll-a and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP). The research was carried out on river mouths in the north coast of Central Java. The results of the linear model show that the relationship between chlorophyll-a and DIP follows the logarithmic model with the log [Chlo-a] = 1.52 + 1.60 log [DIP], R² = 0.55. The model suggests that the high concentration of chlorophyll-a is related to dissolved inorganic phosphate concentrations. On the basis of the sufficient of conclusive evidence for these variables, the study sites with high stresses from several anthropogenic sources had higher chlorophyll-a than the sites that are relatively far from river mouths and lands. A precise quantification of the sea surface partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2(water)) at the water surface is required in order to define the role of the sea in air-sea exchange of CO2. Even though the pCO2(water) can be measured directly, the semi-empirical model has seen numerous application in determining the pCO2(water) due to a time-and cost-efficient. This study aims to compare the pCO2 and FCO2 (Flux of CO2) calculated using Zhai and Zhu algorithm with the underway datasets of pCO2 obtained during the scientific cruise of CISKA-SPICE III in April 2013. The partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) was measured using a high-accuracy electrochemical instrumentation underway HydroC/CO2 FT (flow through) with an error ±1 μ atm. Furthermore, in order to calculate the pCO2 and the FCO2 employing widely used algorithms, some data were needed including wind speed, sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a extracted from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). According to the results obtained, the difference between the pCO2 and FCO2 derived from those two algorithms are significant. The underway datasets of pCO2 are ranging from 409.52-544.01 μatm. Meanwhile, the pCO2 derived using the Zhai algorithm and Zhu algorithm are between 405.003-422.79 μatm and 398.94-752.06 μatm respectively. The FCO2 are varied between 0.02-0.06 molC.m-2.day-1 (Zhai algorithm), 0.02-0.57 molC.m-2.day-1 (Zhu algorithm) dan 0.04-0.23 molC.m-2.day-1 (the underway datasets). A comparison of the two results reveals that pCO2 derived using Zhai algorithm is closer with the underway datasets compared with the result of pCO2 calculated using Zhu algorithm with the MRE (Mean Relative Estimation Error) as large as 19.4% and 39% respectively. Taken together, these results suggest that the Zhai algorithm is more appropriate to determine algorithms for estimating the air-sea exchange of carbon dioxide in the Malacca Straits. Due to accelerated anthropogenic activity, a significant amount of pollutants has been directly or indirectly discharged into coastal estuaries of Kampar. Nutrient pollution along the river to the estuary that adversely affects coastal and estuary ecosystem mainly originates from inland such as industrial effluent, household, and agricultural waste as well as a naturally derived pollutant from biogeochemical cycle, which is controlled by the propagation of undular bore (Bono). The purpose of this study is to determine the environmental impact of distribution of nutrients caused by the mechanism of Bono. This research employed a purposive quantitative method, the concentration of dissolved phosphate, nitrate, nitrite and ammonia was analyzed using a spectrophotometer, tidal data retrieval was measured for 30 days' near the estuarine area, while, current flow was measured for 24 hours' measurement. Phosphate concentrations ranged from 0.02-0.1 mg.L-1, nitrate concentrations ranged from 0.76-5.73 mg.L-1, ammonia concentrations ranged from 0.2-0.41 mg.L-1, nitrate concentrations ranged from 0.001-0.03 mg.L-1. The tidal type is mixed tide prevailing semidiurnal with tidal range reach 4.2 m during spring tide condition. At the time of Bono propagate, drastically enhance the surface elevation and directly increase the drift of velocity with the flow direction from estuary into the river upstream, that mechanism affects the nutrient distribution in Kampar river. Blue carbon ecosystems in the Karimunjawa Islands may play a vital role in absorbing and storing the releasing carbon from the Java Sea. The present study investigated mangrove above-ground biomass (AGB) and carbon stock in the Karimunjawa-Kemujan Islands, the largest mangrove area in the Karimunjawa Islands. Taking the aerial photos from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle combined with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements, we generated Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) with high accuracy. We calculated mangrove canopy height by subtracting DSM from DTM and then converted it into Lorey's height. The highest mangrove canopy is located along the coastline facing the sea, ranging from 8 m to 15 m. Stunted mangroves 1 m to 8 m in height are detected mainly in the inner areas. AGBs were calculated using an allometric equation destined for the Southeast and East Asia region. Above-ground carbon biomass is half of AGB. The AGB and carbon biomass of mangroves in the Karimunjawa-Kemujan Islands range from 8 Mg/ha to 328 Mg/ha, and from 4 MgC/ha to 164 MgC/ha, respectively. With a total area of 238.98 ha, the potential above-ground carbon stored in the study area is estimated as 16,555.46 Mg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The southern coast of South Sulawesi-Indonesia is known as an upwelling area occurring during dry season, which peaks in August. This upwelling area is indicated by high chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations due to a strong easterly wind-induced upwelling. However, the investigation of Chl-a variability is less studied along the western coast of South Sulawesi. By taking advantages of remote sensing data of Chl-a, sea surface temperature, surface wind, and precipitation, the present study firstly shows that along the western coast of South Sulawesi, there are two areas, which have high primary productivity occurring during the rainy season. The first area is at 119.0° E–119.5° E; 3.5° S–4.0° S, while the second area is at 119.0° E–119.5° E; 3.5° S–4.0° S. The maximum primary productivity in the first (second) area occurs in April (January). The generating mechanism of the high primary productivity along the western coast of South Sulawesi is different from its southern coast. The presence of river runoff in these two areas may bring anthropogenic organic compounds during the peak of rainy season, resulting in increased Chl-a concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
