Background: Living alone has been associated with higher risk of acute coronary syndrome in general population, but there are no consistent findings about its effect on prognosis after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Aim: To analyse the relationships between living alone and other risk factors at baseline and long-term survival after AMI. Methods: One hundred and thirty-five patients with confirmed myocardial infarction (MI) admitted to the coronary care unit of the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Clinical Centre of Serbia in Belgrade, between June 2002 and April 2006, were followed up until September 2011. Survival time was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis. Results: Patients with MI were followed up for a median of 77 months. The mean age of participants was 57.82 years (SD ± 10.8), and one quarter of them were women. According to the multivariate Cox regression analysis stratified on marital status, the model in which were included living alone, age, gender, education, obesity, smoking, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, previous cardiovascular and other disease, thrombolytic therapy and localisation of MI, the following variables were found to be independent predictors of death after AMI: living alone, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 7.60 [95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.99-29.08], diabetes mellitus (HR 3.31; 95 % CI 1.33-8.23), current smoking (HR 2.82; 95 % CI 1.03-7.71) and, older age (HR 1.13; 95 % CI 1.06-1.19). The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamics and relationship between DNA methylation and gene expression during early T-cell development. Mononuclear cells were collected at birth and at 12 months from 60 infants and were either activated with anti-CD3 for 24 h or cultured in media alone, and the CD4+ T-cell subset purified. DNA and RNA were co-harvested and DNA methylation was measured in 450 000 CpG sites in parallel with expression measurements taken from 25 000 genes. In unstimulated cells, we found that a subset of 1188 differentially methylated loci were associated with a change in expression in 599 genes (adjusted P value<0.01, β-fold >0.1). These genes were enriched in reprogramming regions of the genome known to control pluripotency. In contrast, over 630 genes were induced following low-level T-cell activation, but this was not associated with any significant change in DNA methylation. We conclude that DNA methylation is dynamic during early T-cell development, and has a role in the consolidation of T-cell-specific gene expression. During the early phase of clonal expansion, DNA methylation is stable and therefore appears to be of limited importance in short-term T-cell responsiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA IMT) in the prognosis of patients with coronary artery disease referred for coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) in a newly made prognostic model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 63 patients (age 60.36 ± 8.28 years) with angiographically established coronary artery disease referred for CABG were evaluated for: age, smoking, family disposition, dyslipidaemia, arterial hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, previous myocardial infarction and revascularization. Patients underwent nitrate enhanced Gated SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging, with 17-segment analysis for calculation of perfusion scores and viability index. Common carotid artery IMT was measured by B-mode ultrasound. Patients were followed for cardiovascular events 12 months after CABG. RESULTS: The obtained data reported mean values of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) 46.2 ± 14.4%, viability index 0.76 ± 0.55, SRS 17.76 ± 13.81 and summed nitrate score 12.89 ± 10.36. Ultrasound detected CCA IMT 0.90 ± 0.24 mm, with increased value in 67.2% and presence of carotid plaques in 27.1% of pts. We registered 14 events and 8.8% mortality rate. Multiple regression modelling showed bilateral carotid plaque presence as a predictor of total events. Viability index and CCA IMT have been found as independent death predictors. CONCLUSIONS: Myocardial perfusion viability index and CCA IMT are predictors, independently associated with prognosis of patients referred for CABG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
