Spalting fungal pigments have shown potential in technologies ranging from green energy generation to natural colorants. However, their unknown toxicity has been a barrier to industrial adoption. In order to gain an understanding of the safety of the pigments, zebrafish embryos were exposed to multiple forms of liquid media and solvent-extracted pigments with concentrations of purified pigment ranging from 0 to 50 mM from Chlorociboria aeruginosa, Chlorociboria aeruginascens, and Scytalidium cuboideum. Purified xylindein from Chlorociboria sp. did not show toxicity at any tested concentration, while the red pigment dramada from S. cuboideum was only associated with significant toxicity above 23.2 uM. However, liquid cultures and pigment extracted into dichloromethane (DCM) showed toxicity, suggesting the co-production of bioactive secondary metabolites. Future research on purification and the bioavailability of the red dramada pigment will be important to identify appropriate use; however, purified forms of the blue-green pigment xylindein are likely safe for use across industries. This opens the door to the adoption of green technologies based on these pigments, with potential to replace synthetic colorants and less stable natural pigments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium dioxide (TD) and graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized by sol-gel and improved Hummers method, respectively. This study shows the results of the incorporation through four different conditions (sol-gel, sol-gel and ultrasonic, annealed, and UV radiation, C1 to C4, respectively). It was observed that a homogeneous incorporation of TD on sheets of GO was obtained satisfactorily. The composites of TiO2/GO were characterized using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The photocatalytic activity of the composites was determined from the degradation of the dye azo tartrazine using UV and solar radiation. The best incorporation of TD nanoparticles on GO was obtained with condition C3 (thermal incorporation method) at a temperature of 65°C. This shows a uniformity in the size and shape of the TD as well as an excellent adherence to the sheet of GO. This addition is accomplished by ionic bonding in the presence of electrostatic Coulomb forces. The C3 composite degraded the tartrazine dye using UV radiation and sunlight. Fungal pigments, specifically those generated from spalting fungi, are being developed for broader use in the wood and textile industry, and due to their coloration properties, may also be useful as aesthetic bamboo dyes. This paper evaluates the potential use of fungal pigments in bamboo (Phyllostachys spp.), and compares the difference between natural spalting and the direct application of extracted fungal pigments of three known spalting fungi: Scytalidium cuboideum, Scytalidium ganodermophthorum, and Chlorociboria aeruginosa. Bamboo was significantly spalted by S. cuboideum under live inoculation, while the other two fungi did not colonize. For the direct application of fungal pigments, bamboo did not develop internal pigmentation with any pigment, but did develop visible surface color for S. cuboideium and C. aeruginosa. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the presence of hyphae in bamboo vessels and parenchyma. An HPLC analysis for simple sugars showed the presence of glucose but no sucrose. Results indicate that the extracted pigments of the aforementioned fungi are ideal for the surface treatment of bamboo, while only direct inoculation of S. cuboideum is appropriate for internal coloration. The use of a combined therapy with low doses of estrogens plus antidepressants to treat depression associated to perimenopause could be advantageous. However the use of these combinations is controversial due to several factors, including the time of intervention in relation to menopause onset. This paper analyzes whether time post-OVX influences the antidepressant-like action of a combination of ethynyl-estradiol (EE2) and citalopram (CIT) in the forced swim test (FST). Middle-aged (15 months old) female Wistar rats were ovariectomized and after one or three weeks treated with EE2 (1.25, 2.5 or 5.0 μg/rat, s.c.; -48 h) or CIT (1.25, 2.5, 5.0 or 10 mg/kg, i.p./3 injections in 24 h) and tested in the FST. In a second experiment, after one or three weeks of OVX, rats received a combination of an ineffective dose of EE2 (1.25 μg/rat, s.c., -48 h) plus CIT (2.5 mg/kg, i.p./3 injections in 24 h) and subjected to the FST. Finally, the uteri were removed and weighted to obtain an index of the peripheral effects of EE2 administration. EE2 (2.5 or 5.0 μg/rat) reduced immobility after one but not three weeks of OVX. In contrast, no CIT dose reduced immobility at one or three weeks after OVX. When EE2 (1.25 μg/rat) was combined with CIT (2.5 mg/kg) an antidepressant-like effect was observed at one but not three weeks post-OVX. The weight of the uteri augmented when EE2 was administrated three weeks after OVX. The data suggest that the time post-OVX is a crucial factor that contributes to observe the antidepressant-like effect of EE2 alone or in combination with CIT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we propose and analyze a globally and locally adaptive super-resolution Bayesian methodology for pansharpening of multispectral images. The methodology incorporates prior knowledge on the expected characteristics of the multispectral images uses the sensor characteristics to model the observation process of both panchromatic and multispectral images and includes information on the unknown parameters in the model in the form of hyperprior distributions. Using real and synthetic data, the pansharpened multispectral images are compared with the images obtained by other pansharpening methods and their quality is assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively. BACKGROUND: The hormonal alterations observed in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may promote implantation failure as well as disruption of their endometrial homeostasis. To evaluate cell survival of mid-secretory endometrium from untreated women with PCOS, we measured the expression of apoptosis and proliferation-related proteins. METHODS: A case–control study of 11 patients with PCOS and 11 fertile women in the Hospital Research Unit was performed. Endometrial samples were obtained from PCOS women (PCOSE) and fertile healthy women (CE) during the mid-secretory phase of the menstrual cycle. Protein expressions for Akt, p-AktSer473 and p-AktThr308, Bad, p-BadSer136, Bcl-2, Bax and pro-caspase-3/caspase-3, were assessed by western blot, and Ki67 and p-histone-3 (p-H3) by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: In CE and PCOSE, a predominance of p-AktThr308 over p-AktSer473 is observed; p-BadSer136 expression is higher in PCOSE than in CE (P < 0.05). Also, Bcl-2 protein is overexpressed in PCOSE (P < 0.05), with no changes in Bax expression among the two groups, resulting in a significantly higher Bcl-2/Bax ratio in PCOSE than in CE (P < 0.05). No changes in the expression of caspase-3 are obtained between both groups of endometria. Furthermore, cell proliferation detected by the expression of Ki67 and p-H3 proteins is higher in the epithelia than the stroma of PCOSE versus CE (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The abnormal tissue homeostasis exhibited by the secretory endometrium from PCOS patients with spontaneous ovulation may interfere with their endometrial receptivity. Summary.  Rapid diffusion of allergenic proteins in isotonic media has been demonstrated for different pollen grains. Upon contact with stigmatic secretion or with the mucosa of sensitive individuals, pollen grains absorb water and release soluble low-molecular-weight proteins, these proteins enter in the secretory pathway in order to arrive at the cell surface. In this study we located allergenic proteins in mature and hydrated-activated pollen grains of Parietaria judaica L. (Urticaceae) and studied the diffusion of these proteins during the first 20 min of the hydration and activation processes. A combination of transmission electron microscopy and immunocytochemical methods was used to locate these proteins in mature pollen and in pollen grains after different periods of hydration and activation processes. Activated proteins reacting with antibodies in human serum from allergic patients were found in the cytoplasm, wall, and exudates from the pollen grains. The allergenic component of these pollen grains changes according to the pollen state; the presence of these proteins in the exine, the cytoplasm, and especially in the intine and in the material exuded from the pollen grains, is significant in the hydrated-activated studied times, whereas this presence is not significant in mature pollen grains. The rapid activation and release of allergenic proteins of P. judaica pollen appears to be the main cause of the allergenic activity of these pollen grains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A weakly nonlinear analysis of one-dimensional viscous Faraday waves in two-dimensional large-aspect-ratio containers is presented. The surface wave is coupled to a viscous long-wave mean flow that is slaved to the free-surface deformation. The relevant Ginzburg–Landau-like amplitude equations are derived from first principles, and can be of three different types, depending on the ratio between wavelength, depth and the viscous length. These three equations are new in the context of Faraday waves. The coefficients of these equations are calculated for arbitrary viscosity and compared with their counterparts in the literature for small viscosity; a discrepancy in the cubic coefficient is due to a dramatic sensitivity of this coefficient on a small wavenumber shift due to interplay between viscous effects and parametric forcing. Antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies bind to β2glycoprotein I (β2GPI) and cause endothelial cell (EC) activation and thrombosis in mice. β2GPI binds to EC through its Vth domain and induces their activation. TIFI is a 20 amino acid synthetic peptide that shares similarity with the Vth domain of β2GPI. Our objectives were to examine the ability of TIFI to affect aPL-mediated thrombosis in mice and the interactions of TIFI, β2GPI with phospholipid surfaces and target cells. CD1 mice were injected with IgG from a patient with antiphospholipid syndrome (IgG-APS) or with control IgG-NHS and with either TIFI or with control peptide (VITT). Size of induced thrombi was determined. Inhibition and competition studies were done using aPL antibodies, cardiolipin (CL) liposomes in the presence of varying amounts of TIFI and β2GPI. Binding of fluorescinated β2GPI to human ECs and to murine macrophages in the presence or absence of TIFI, was also examined. TIFI significantly decreased thrombus size in mice injected with IgG-APS. TIFI reverted the β2GPI-dependent binding of aPL antibodies to CL liposomes in a dose-dependent fashion. This effect was abrogated by addition of β2GPI, suggesting that TIFI displaces the binding of β2GPI to phospholipids. TIFI inhibited the binding of fluorescinated β2GPI to human EC and to murine macrophages. The data indicate that TIFI abrogates thrombogenic properties of aPL in mice by competing with β2GPI and preventing its binding to target cells. The effect of vertical vibration on the long-wave instability of a Marangoni system is studied. The vibration augments the stabilizing effect of surface tension in bounded systems. In laterally unbounded systems nonlinear terms can stabilize non-flat states and prevent the appearance of dry spots. The effect of a slight inclination of the system is also considered. We consider the effect of surface contamination, modelled by Marangoni elasticity with insoluble surfactant and surface viscosity, in promoting drift instabilities in spatially uniform standing Faraday waves. It is seen that contamination enhances drift instabilities that lead to various steadily propagating and (both standing and propagating) oscillatory patterns. Some species of macroalgae continue to live for extended periods of time after detachment and may even maintain reproductive structures, yet very little is known about this process. Here, we describe the presence of sporophylls (with sporogenous tissues) on floating kelp rafts of Macrocystis spp. along the coast of Chile. Surveys were conducted at nine sites (18–50° S) during austral summer 2002, and floating kelp rafts were seen and collected at seven of these nine sites (between 22 and 50° S). Fifteen (26.8%) of the 56 samples had sporophylls, indicating maintenance of sporophylls after detachment. Some of the kelp sporophytes with reproductive blades showed signs of having been afloat for long periods (indicated by the large size of attached stalked barnacles). Additionally, experiments showed that floating kelps released viable zoospores. To understand the reproductive dynamics of floating kelps, we compared these results with information from attached populations of Macrocystis spp. at nearby coastal sites. In general, attached kelp had higher proportions of sporophylls than floating rafts, suggesting that detachment may negatively affect reproductive status. Nevertheless, floating kelps remained functionally reproductive, suggesting that zoospores may be dispersed via floating rafts. Published reports on other macroalgae indicate that some species (Lessoniaceae, Fucaceae, and Sargassaceae) are fertile and probably release zoospores or zygotes while floating or drifting in ocean currents. Because dispersal distances achieved by spores of most macroalgae are relatively short, release of spores from floating algae may be an alternative mechanism of long-distance dispersal. Simvastatin and fenofibrate are both commonly used lipid-regulating agents with distinct mechanisms of action, and their coadministration may be an attractive treatment for some patients with dyslipidemia. A 2-period, randomized, open-label, crossover study was conducted in 12 subjects to determine if fenofibrate and simvastatin are subject to a clinically relevant pharmacokinetic interaction at steady state. In treatment A, subjects received an 80-mg simvastatin tablet in the morning for 7 days. In treatment B, subjects received a 160-mg micronized fenofibrate capsule in the morning for 7 days, followed by a 160-mg micronized fenofibrate capsule dosed together with an 80-mg simvastatin tablet on days 8 to 14. Because food increases the bioavailability of fenofibrate, each dose was administered with food to maximize the exposure of fenofibric acid. The steady-state pharmacokinetics (AUC 0-24h, Cmax, andtmax) of active and total HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, simvastatin acid, and simvastatin were determined following simvastatin administration with and without fenofibrate. Also, fenofibric acid steady-state pharmacokinetics were evaluated with and without simvastatin. The geometric mean ratios (GMRs) for AUC0-24h(80 mg simvastatin [SV] + 160 mg fenofibrate)/(80 mg simvastatin alone) and 90% confidence intervals (CIs) were 0.88 (0.80, 0.95) and 0.92 (0.82, 1.03) for active and total HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. The GMRs and 90% CIs for fenofibric acid (80 mg SV + 160 mg fenofibrate/160 mg fenofibrate alone) AUC0-24hand Cmaxwere 0.95 (0.88, 1.04) and 0.89 (0.77, 1.02), respectively. Because both the active inhibitor and fenofibric acid AUC GMR 90% confidence intervals fell within the prespecified bounds of (0.70, 1.43), no clinically significant pharmacokinetic drug interaction between fenofibrate and simvastatin was concluded in humans. A new method to analyze spatio-temporal flow structures is presented. It consists on applying a higher order dynamic mode decomposition sequentially, in time and space. The method is successfully applied to analyze the three-dimensional wake of a circular cylinder. The results obtained are in good agreement with their counterparts predicted by the linear theory (Floquet stability analysis), although the data analyzed are nonlinear. This sequential spatio-temporal method provides a more detailed description of the flow physics, since the dominant frequencies, wavenumbers and their harmonics are accurately calculated. This method is a promising tool, suitable to uncover spatio-temporal flow structures that could be used to study global instabilities in complex nonlinear flows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intarsia was an art form popular between the 15th–18th centuries that used wood pigmented by spalting fungi to create detailed landscapes, portraits, and other imagery. These fungi are still used today in art but are also finding relevance in material science as elements of solar cells, textile dyes, and paint colorants. Here we show that the spalting fungus Scytalidium cuboideum (Sacc. and Ellis) Sigler and Kang produces a red/pink pigment that forms two distinct colors of crystals (red and orange)—a very rare occurrence. In addition, a second structure of the crystal is proved through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This is only the second instance of a stable, naphthoquinone crystal produced by a fungus. Its discovery is particularly valuable for solar cell development, as crystalline materials have a higher electrical conductivity. This paper deals with the use of the topological derivative as an analysis tool for structural health monitoring, to locate the presence of flaws in a homogeneous material plate that is subject to guided elastic waves excitation. Using a numerical solver to compute the response of the system and defining a scalar objective function that measures the least squares difference between the measured and calculated signals, the topological derivative somehow describes the sensitivity of the objective function to localized perturbations of the material properties due to the presence of defects. Thus, defects are guessed to be located near the topological derivative peaks. This is somehow related to the minimization of the objective function and uses the whole physics of the problem (to compute the objective function), instead of a smaller amount of physical information, as conventional methods do. Here, we reconstruct small defects via the topological derivative by using multi-frequency synthetic data, for several representative configurations of the actuators and sensors, and several defect locations. Among these, some fairly demanding configurations are considered that are not accessible to conventional methods, such as actuators and sensors located very close to the plate boundary, and defects located beyond both elongated through-slits and elongated inclusions of a different material. The blue-green pigment known as xylindein that is produced by species in the Chlorociboria genus is under heavy investigation for its potential in textile dyes, wood dyes, and solar cells. Xylindein has not yet been synthesized, and while its production can be stimulated under laboratory conditions, it is also plentiful in downed, decayed wood in forested lands. Unfortunately, little is known about the wood preference and forest type preference for this genus, especially outside New Zealand. To map the genus would be a massive undertaking, and herein a method by which citizen scientists could contribute to the distribution map of Chlorociboria species is proposed. The initial trial of this method found untrained participants successfully identified Chlorociboria stained wood in each instance, regardless of forest type. This simple, easy identification and classification system should be well received by citizen-scientists and is the first step towards a global understanding of how xylindein production might be managed for across various ecosystems. Modern industrial aircraft design requires a large amount of sufficiently accurate aerodynamic and aeroelastic simulations. Current computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers with aeroelastic capabilities, such as the NASA URANS unstructured solver FUN3D, require very large computational resources. Since a very large amount of simulation is necessary, the CFD cost is just unaffordable in an industrial production environment and must be significantly reduced. Thus, a more inexpensive, yet sufficiently precise solver is strongly needed. An opportunity to approach this goal could follow some recent results (Terragni and Vega 2014 SIAMJ. Appl. Dyn. Syst. 13 330–65; Rapun et al 2015 Int.J. Numer. Meth. Eng.104 844–68) on an adaptive reduced order model that combines ‘on the fly’ a standard numerical solver (to compute some representative snapshots), proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) (to extract modes from the snapshots), Galerkin projection (onto the set of POD modes), and several additional ingredients such as projecting the equations using a limited amount of points and fairly generic mode libraries. When applied to the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation, the method produces acceleration factors (comparing with standard numerical solvers) of the order of 20 and 300 in one and two space dimensions, respectively. Unfortunately, the extension of the method to unsteady, compressible flows around deformable geometries requires new approaches to deal with deformable meshes, high-Reynolds numbers, and compressibility. A first step in this direction is presented considering the unsteady compressible, two-dimensional flow around an oscillating airfoil using a CFD solver in a rigidly moving mesh.
