Radical nationalism is a political ideology centred on tying an imagined people to a bordered territory. It grows from nationalism's root system into a diversity of political manifestations aimed at sealing the people-territory bond. By theorizing radical nationalism, this article outlines a political-ideological approach that opens new pathways for studying the so-called far right. The article draws on Michael Freeden's conceptual-morphological theory and delineates how nationalism's thin-centred conceptual core – people and territory – can thicken into a full-bodied political ideology: from football and flags to systemic discrimination, deportations, and mass violence. In response to the empirical observation that radical nationalism nurtures historical and contemporary actors across the left-right spectrum, the article offers a political-ideological lens for transhistorical analyses of various political manifestations that sprout and flourish from the exclusionary roots of the modern nation-state. Identifying cell types and brain regions critical for psychiatric disorders and brain traits is essential for targeted neurobiological research. By integrating genomic insights from genome-wide association studies with a comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic atlas of the adult human brain, we prioritized specific neuronal clusters significantly enriched for the SNP-heritabilities for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder along with intelligence, education, and neuroticism. Extrapolation of cell-type results to brain regions reveals the whole-brain impact of schizophrenia genetic risk, with subregions in the hippocampus and amygdala exhibiting the most significant enrichment of SNP-heritability. Using functional MRI connectivity, we further confirmed the significance of the central and lateral amygdala, hippocampal body, and prefrontal cortex in distinguishing schizophrenia cases from controls. Our findings underscore the value of single-cell transcriptomics in understanding the polygenicity of psychiatric disorders and suggest a promising alignment of genomic, transcriptomic, and brain imaging modalities for identifying common biological targets. We investigate properties of group gradings on matrix rings $ M_n(R) $ M n (R) , where R is an associative unital ring and n is a positive integer. More precisely, we introduce very good gradings and show that any very good grading on $ M_n(R) $ M n (R) is necessarily epsilon-strong. We also identify a condition that is sufficient to guarantee that $ M_n(R) $ M n (R) is an epsilon-crossed product, i.e. isomorphic to a crossed product associated with a unital twisted partial action. Background: Autism is associated with alterations of social communication, such as during face-to-face interactions. This study aimed to probe face processing in autistics with normal IQ utilizing magnetoencephalography to examine event-related fields within the fusiform gyrus during face perception. Methods: A case–control cohort of 22 individuals diagnosed with autism and 20 age-matched controls (all male, age 29.3 ± 6.9 years) underwent magnetoencephalographic scanning during an active task while observing neutral faces, face-like pareidolic objects, and non-face objects. The fusiform face area was identified using a face localizer for each participant, and the cortical activation pattern was normalized onto an average brain for subsequent analysis. Results: Early post-stimulus activation amplitudes (before 100–200 ms) indicated differentiation between stimuli containing fundamental facial features and non-face objects in both groups. In contrast, later activation (400–550 ms) differentiated real faces from both pareidolic and non-face objects across both groups and faces from objects in controls but not in autistics. There was no effect of autistic-like traits. Conclusions: The absence of group differences in early activation suggest intact face detection in autistics possessing a normal IQ. Later activation captures a greater degree of the complexity and social information from actual faces. Although both groups distinguished faces from pareidolic and non-face objects, the control group exhibited a slightly heightened differentiation at this latency, indicating a potential disadvantage for autistics in real face processing. This article explains why self-identified great powers seek to provide a ‘sphere of influence meaning’ to geographical space when such narratives have the potential to insult the smaller actors in the space over which such powers seek exclusive influence. The article draws and expands on the ‘physical turn’ in ontological security studies by introducing the notion of a ‘geographical here’ as key to a great power that perceives its status as threatened. The argument is illustrated through a comparative analysis of three US presidential administrations. The identification and quantification of prey ingested is a limiting factor in trophic ecology studies and is fundamental for assessing the impact of a predator on prey populations. Vendace (Coregonus albula) and whitefish (C. lavaretus) are two congeneric species, which are commonly preyed on by Baltic ringed seals (Pusa hispida). The otoliths of these two species are, however, very similar and distinguishing between them in the seal diet using visual inspection has so far been challenging. Here, otolith shape outline analyses were used in combination with machine learning techniques to discriminate between eroded vendace and whitefish otoliths from ringed seal diet samples. An experiment of in vitro digestion of the otoliths was performed to train a machine learning model. Our model is able to self-assign known digested otoliths back to their species of origin with >90% accuracy. Furthermore, 89% (N  = 690) of the otoliths collected from digestive tract samples could be successfully assigned to species level, i.e. vendace or whitefish. This method is readily applicable for improved understanding of ringed seal feeding habits and predator–prey interactions, as well as large-scale applications to generate seal-predation matrix inputs for stock assessments of vendace and whitefish. Background Risk-based thresholds for arteriovenous (AV) access creation has been proposed to aid vascular access planning. We aimed to assess the clinical impact of implementing the Kidney Failure Risk Equation (KFRE) for vascular access referral. Methods A total of 16 102 nephrology-referred chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients from the Swedish Renal Registry 2008–18 were included. The KFRE was calculated repeatedly, and the timing was identified for when the KFRE risk exceeded several pre-defined thresholds and/or the estimated glomerular filtration rate was <15 mL/min/1.73 m2 (eGFR15). To assess the utility of the KFRE/eGFR thresholds, cumulative incidence curves of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) or death, and decision-curve analyses were computed at 6 and 12 months, and 2 years. The potential impact of using the different thresholds was illustrated by an example from the Swedish access registry. Results The 12-month specificity for KRT initiation was highest for KFRE >50% {94.5 [95% confidence interval (CI) 94.3–94.7]} followed by KFRE >40% [90.0 (95% CI 89.7–90.3)], while sensitivity was highest for KFRE >30% [79.3 (95% CI 78.2–80.3)] and eGFR <15 mL/min/1.73 m2 [81.2 (95% CI 80.2–82.2)]. The 2-year positive predictive value was 71.5 (95% CI 70.2–72.8), 61.7 (95% CI 60.4–63.0) and 47.2 (95% CI 46.1–48.3) for KFRE >50%, KFRE >40% and eGFR <15, respectively. Decision curve analyses suggested the largest net benefit for KFRE >40% over 2 years and KFRE >50% over 12 months when it is important to avoid the harm of possibly unnecessary surgery. In Sweden, 54% of nephrology-referred patients started hemodialysis in a central venous catheter (CVC), of whom only 5% had AV access surgery >6 months before initiation. Sixty percent of the CVC patients exceeded KFRE >40% a median of 0.8 years (interquartile range 0.4–1.5) before KRT initiation. Conclusions The utility of using KFRE >40% and KFRE >50% is higher compared with the more traditionally used eGFR threshold <15 mL/min/1.73 m2 for vascular access planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Triethyl phosphate (TEP) is a cheap, environmentally benign, and non‐flammable electrolyte solvent, whose implementation in lithium‐ion batteries is held back by its co‐intercalation into graphite anodes, resulting in exfoliation of the graphite structure. In this work, the electrode‐electrolyte interface behaviour of electrolytes containing up to 100 % TEP is investigated and correlated to electrochemical performance. High capacity and stable cycling are maintained with up to 30 % TEP in carbonate ester‐based electrolytes, but above this threshold the reversibility of Li+ intercalation into graphite drops sharply to almost zero. This represents a potential route to improved battery safety, while TEP can also improve safety indirectly by enabling the use of lithium bis(oxalato)borate, a fluorine‐free salt with limited solubility in traditional electrolytes. To understand the poor performance at TEP concentrations of >30 %, its solvation behaviour and interfacial reaction chemistry were studied. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy data confirms changes in the Li+ solvation shell above 30 % TEP, while operando gas analysis indicates extensive gas evolution from TEP decomposition at the electrode above the threshold concentration, which is almost entirely absent below it. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling of electrodes demonstrates poor passivation by the solid electrolyte interphase above 30 % TEP and significant graphite exfoliation. Iron ore pellet production processes produce large amounts of CO2 emissions when burning fossil fuels. One example is the grate-kiln process, where normally a coal flame is used to indurate pellets. To mitigate the emissions, coal used in rotary kilns can be replaced with for example hydrogen. However, the fuel is mixed with secondary process air, and replacing a solid fuel with a gaseous one changes the mixing characteristics. This demands different means of injecting the fuel. A coaxial jet can be used to control the mixing of fuel and secondary air, as well as the flow field. The aim is to control the mixing of hydrogen and secondary air to achieve a hydrogen flame that is similar to the reference coal flame. This study numerically investigates different coaxial jet configurations. Steady-state simulations of a simplified model of the real kiln are performed using a Reynolds Stress turbulence model. Results show that decreasing the momentum flow ratio between the outer and inner jet, $ {M_{jet}} $ M jet , to a certain value delays the spread of the hydrogen jet and thus gives a longer jet. Further decreasing this ratio gives an even longer jet, but has the side effect of producing recirculation of hydrogen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The social risks of green energy transition are underexplored. One of the important questions is which materials used in green energy technologies offer the greatest social benefits, such as ensuring decent living conditions, and which pose the most social risks. To address this issue, we develop a dynamic material-energy flow model integrating system dynamics, social life cycle assessment, and geometallurgical approaches. The analysis focuses on critical materials: Rare Earth Elements, Nickel, Silicon, Graphite, Magnesium, Gallium, Germanium, Indium, Aluminum, Cobalt, Lithium, Zinc, and Tellurium used in wind turbines, electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and solar photovoltaic panels. We assess their social impact on work safety, gender equality, informal employment, labor income share, employment rate, and child labor—key issues addressed by Sustainable Development Goals 1, 5, and 8. Here we show that Aluminum production for electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar photovoltaic panels generates the most jobs and income opportunities, while extraction of Cobalt, Lithium, Silicon, and Zinc carry the highest social risks. This study identifies materials used in green energy technologies with the most social benefits and risks. Structural- and functional heterogeneity, as well as allosteric regulation, in homo-monomeric enzymes is a highly active area of research. One such enzyme is human nuclear-associated deoxyuridine 5'-triphosphate nucleotidohydrolase (dUTPase), which has emerged as an interesting drug target in combination therapy with traditional nucleotide analogue treatment of cancer. We report, for the first time, a full structural dynamics study of human dUTPase by NMR. dUTPase has been investigated in terms of structural dynamics in its apo form, in complex with the modified substrate resistant to hydrolysis, 2'-deoxyuridine 5'-α,β-imido-triphosphate (dUpNHpp), as well as the product, 2'-deoxy-uridine-monophosphate (dUMP). The apo form of the enzyme displayed slow dynamics in the milli- to microsecond regime in relaxation dispersion experiments, which was further slowed down to observable heterogeneity upon substrate-analogue binding. The results suggest that the non-hydrolysable substrate-analogue traps the enzyme in the conformational isomerization step that has been previously suggested to be part of the enzyme catalysis kinetics cycle. The observed heterogeneity fits well with the pattern expected to emerge from the suggested kinetic model, and no evidence for homotropic allosterism was found. The heatmaps of the slow dynamics, chemical shift perturbation upon substrate binding and conserved regions of the enzyme sequence all displayed a similar pattern, which suggests that the structural dynamics is finely tuned and important for the biological function of the enzyme for binding, conformational shift, catalysis and substrate release. Multiple neural mechanisms underlying gating to working memory have been proposed with divergent results obtained in human and animal studies. Previous findings from non-human primates suggest prefrontal beta frequency bursts as a correlate of transient inhibition during selective encoding. Human studies instead suggest a similar role for sensory alpha power fluctuations. To cast light on these discrepancies we employed a sequential working memory task with distractors for human participants. In particular, we examined their whole-brain electrophysiological activity in both alpha and beta bands with the same single-trial burst analysis earlier performed on non-human primates. Our results reconcile earlier findings by demonstrating that both alpha and beta bursts in humans correlate with the filtering and control of memory items, but with region and task-specific differences between the two rhythms. Occipital beta burst patterns were selectively modulated during the transition from sensory processing to memory retention whereas prefrontal and parietal beta bursts tracked sequence order and were proactively upregulated prior to upcoming target encoding. Occipital alpha bursts instead increased during the actual presentation of unwanted sensory stimuli. Source reconstruction additionally suggested the involvement of striatal and thalamic alpha and beta. Thus, specific whole-brain burst patterns correlate with different aspects of working memory control. Oscillatory beta bursts are linked to cognitive control in primates, but their role in humans is less clear. A core function of the olfactory system is to determine the valence of odors. In humans, central processing of odor valence perception has been shown to take form already within the olfactory bulb (OB), but the neural mechanisms by which this important information is communicated to, and from, the olfactory cortex (piriform cortex, PC) in humans are not known. To assess communication between the 2 nodes, we simultaneously measured odor-dependent neural activity in the OB and PC from human participants while obtaining trial-by-trial valence ratings. By doing so, we could determine when subjective valence information was communicated, what kind of information was transferred, and how the information was transferred (i.e., in which frequency band). Support vector machine (SVM) learning was used on the coherence spectrum and frequency-resolved Granger causality to identify valence-dependent differences in functional and effective connectivity between the OB and PC. We found that the OB communicates subjective odor valence to the PC in the gamma band shortly after odor onset, while the PC subsequently feeds valence-related information back to the OB in the beta band. Decoding accuracy was better for negative than positive valence, suggesting a focus on negative valence. Critically, we replicated these findings in an independent data set using additional odors across a larger perceived valence range. Combined, these results demonstrate that the OB and PC communicate levels of subjective odor pleasantness across multiple frequencies, at specific time points, in a direction-dependent pattern in accordance with a two-stage model of odor processing. Purpose: Benefits of prophylactic platelet (PLT) transfusion before dentoalveolar surgery are unclear. This study investigated the effect of prophylactic PLT transfusions on the incidence of postoperative bleeding (POB) in patients with thrombocytopenia and a PLT count ≤ 75*109/L. Methods: The cohort in this retrospective study comprised 83 patients with thrombocytopenia ≤ 75*109/L who had undergone dentoalveolar surgery. Exclusion criteria were other coagulation deficiencies or medications that would affect hemostasis. In all, 144 teeth had been removed. POB events were extracted and compared between the group that had received prophylactic PLT transfusion before dentoalveolar surgery and the group that had not. Results: POB events were observed in 5 of 83 patients (6.0%) who had a median PLT count of 35*109/L before any transfusion. The group with no postoperative bleeding (NPOB) had a median PLT count of 34*109/L. Two (4.2%) of the 48 patients who had received prophylactic PLT transfusions before dentoalveolar surgery developed POB. Three (8.6%) of the 35 patients who had not received a transfusion experienced POB. The difference between these two groups was not significant (p = 0.646). When two or more teeth were removed in the same session, a significantly higher incidence of POB was observed (p = 0.042). Conclusions: Our data indicate that prophylactic PLT transfusions in thrombocytopenic patients with PLT counts ≤ 75*109/L do not reduce the incidence of POB after dentoalveolar surgery. However, caution is warranted when extracting multiple teeth in the same surgical session since we found this to be significantly associated with an increased risk of POB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several studies suggest that breathing entrains neural oscillations and thereby improves visual detection and memory performance during nasal inhalation. However, the evidence for this association is mixed, with some studies finding no, minor, or opposite effects. Here, we tested whether nasal breathing phase influences memory of repeated images presented in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. The RSVP task is ideal for studying the effects of respiratory‐entrained oscillations on visual memory because it engages critical aspects of sensory encoding that depend on oscillatory activity, such as fast processing of natural images, repetition detection, memory encoding, and retrieval. It also enables the presentation of a large number of stimuli during each phase of the breathing cycle. In two separate experiments (n = 72 and n = 142, respectively) where participants were explicitly asked to breathe through their nose, we found that nasal breathing phase at target presentation did not significantly affect memory performance. An exploratory analysis in the first experiment suggested a potential benefit for targets appearing approximately 1 s after inhalation. However, this finding was not replicated in the pre‐registered second experiment with a larger sample. Thus, in two large sample experiments, we found no measurable impact of breathing phase on memory performance in the RSVP task. These results suggest that the natural breathing cycle does not have a significant impact on memory for repeated images and raise doubts about the idea that visual memory is broadly affected by the breathing phase. Using a task that engages oscillatory activity‐dependent visual memory (fast processing of natural images), we find that the natural breathing cycle does not have a significant impact on recognition memory for repeated images. Summary: Background: Faecal biomarkers can be used to assess inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Aim: To explore the performance of some promising biomarkers in diagnosing and predicting disease course in IBD. Methods: We included 65 patients with treatment‐naïve, new‐onset Crohn's disease (CD), 90 with ulcerative colitis (UC), 67 symptomatic controls (SC) and 41 healthy controls (HC) in this prospective observational study. We analysed faecal samples for calprotectin (FC), myeloperoxidase (MPO), human neutrophil lipocalin (HNL), eosinophil cationic protein ECP and eosinophil‐derived neurotoxin (EDN) and compared markers among groups. We assessed the diagnostic capability of biomarkers with receiver operating characteristic curves. Clinical disease course was determined for each patient with IBD and analysed the association with biomarkers by logistic regression. Results: All markers were elevated at inclusion in patients with IBD compared with HC (p < 0.001) and SC (p < 0.001). FC (AUC 0.85, 95% CI: 0.79–0.89) and MPO (AUC 0.85, 95% CI: 0.80–0.89) showed the highest diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing IBD from SC. The diagnostic ability of biomarkers differed between IBD subtypes with the highest performance for FC and MPO in CD. The diagnostic accuracy was further improved by combining FC and MPO (p = 0.02). Levels of FC, MPO and HNL at inclusion were predictive of an aggressive disease course with MPO showing the strongest association (p = 0.006). Conclusions: This study provides new insight into the diagnostic and prognostic capability of neutrophil and eosinophil biomarkers in IBD and suggests that MPO, alone or in combination with FC, may add to the diagnostic power of faecal biomarkers. Purpose: The recycling of lithium-ion batteries is an emerging field faced with the challenge of recovering more than the most valuable elements from the batteries. While the literature presents many innovative approaches to the problem, an overview of the technical and environmental prospects of hydrometallurgical black mass recycling remains crucial. The goal was to analyze the impacts of a black mass process flowsheet and suggest ways to further reduce the impacts of battery recycling. Methods: The flowsheet was drafted from the literature by combining both state-of-the-art and experimentally demonstrated unit processes by starting with the leaching system, where reductive leaching is performed using only the copper and iron impurities already present in the black mass. The process targeted copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel, and lithium recovery, and three scenarios for manganese recovery were investigated. The flowsheet was simulated using HSC Sim software, and the mass and energy balances were adapted into internally consistent life cycle inventories. The scope was "gate-to-gate" in Europe and CML methodology was used for impact assessment. Results and discussion: Assuming that mechanical pre-treatment carries more environmental benefits than burdens, the results indicated that hydrometallurgical black mass recycling had a tentatively lower environmental footprint compared to virgin raw materials in all impact categories except ozone depletion, the results indicated that hydrometallurgical black mass recycling had a tentatively lower environmental footprint compared to virgin raw materials in all impact categories except ozone depletion. Sulfuric acid and neutralizing chemicals were among the most significant contributors to the impacts, and therefore further analysis was conducted based on an experimental study on low acid leaching with a low (< 0.5 M) initial sulfuric acid concentration instead of the baseline 2 M. This reduced the impacts by approximately 30–40% in all categories by decreasing downstream chemical consumption, and more significantly decreased ozone depletion. The challenges and opportunities for further process improvement were also considered. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of process optimization to improve the environmental sustainability of battery chemical production, but also revealed critical research gaps in the experimental literature. Rather than focusing on a single unit process, experimental black mass recycling research should aim at finding solutions that are optimal for the up- and downstream units, such as minimization of aluminum in the black mass and acid consumption. This study seeks to understand how children express themselves socially and emotionally in play negotiations in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings. It addresses the following research questions: What strategies do children employ in play negotiations? How do these strategies manifest themselves socially and emotionally? The study was conducted in eight ECEC centers and one preschool located in Swedish-speaking regions of Finland. The target group consisted of children aged 3–6. Data were collected through video observations that captured children's social interactions and engagement with their peers during free play. A multimodal interaction analysis approach was employed to identify a prominent category termed "exclusion", which refers to how children employ strategies (e.g., fantasy and fiction) to limit the participation of other children in play negotiations. The results of this study contribute to our understanding of children's complex play negotiations and highlight the significance of addressing their social and emotional development in these contexts. Background: Over the last decades, the prevalence of Attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has increased. However, the underlying explanation for this increase remains unclear. We aimed to assess whether there has been a secular change in how parents perceive the impairment conferred by ADHD symptomatology. Methods: Data for this study were obtained from the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden, involving 27,240 individuals whose parents answered a questionnaire when the children were 9 years old. We assessed the relationship between parentally perceived impairment caused by ADHD symptoms scores over time. The analysis was performed separately for five different birth cohorts, spanning three‐year periods from 1995 to 2009 and for ADHD inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity dimensions. Results: We found a consistent upward trend of parents reporting impairment in relation to ADHD symptomatology across birth cohorts. Over a 12‐year period, comparing those born 2007–2009 (assessed 2016–2018) with those born 1995–1997 (assessed 2004–2006), impairment scores increased by 27% at clinically relevant levels of ADHD symptomatology. Notably, when specifically evaluating the hyperactivity/impulsivity dimension, the disparity was even more striking, with an increase of up to 77%. Conclusions: This study revealed a significant secular change in parental perception of impairment attributed to ADHD symptomatology over recent decades, providing new insights into the increased prevalence of ADHD. Background: Research on genetic and environmental influences on speech and/or language difficulties (SaLD) is sparse, with inconsistent heritability estimates. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of parental reported SaLD and the relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors for the phenotype using a Swedish population‐based twin sample. We hypothesized that there would be a stronger genetic than environmental effect on SaLD. Methods: Data were collected from The Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden. The study sample included 16,774 twin pairs (16,946 males, 16,602 females), of which 5141 were monozygotic, 5861 dizygotic (DZ), and 5772 opposite‐sex DZ pairs. The language items in the Autism–Tics, Attention‐Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and other Comorbidities inventory were used to categorize individuals as having parental‐reported SaLD. A classical twin design was used to estimate the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to the liability of SaLD. Results: The prevalence of SaLD was 7.85% (95% confidence interval (CI) [7.57%–8.15%]) and 7.27% (95% CI [6.99%–7.55%]) when excluding individuals with autism and intellectual disability (ID). We also found that SaLD were significantly more prevalent in males than females with a ratio of 2:1. The heritability was estimated to be 75% (95% CI [67%–83%]) for SaLD. Shared environment played a significant role with an estimated contribution of 22% (95% CI [14%–30%]). The heritability estimate was reduced to 70% but with overlapping CI when excluding individuals with autism and ID. Conclusions: We provide evidence that SaLD is common in the population and under strong genetic influence. We obtain criteria for when a ring with enough idempotents is left/right artinian or noetherian in terms of local criteria defined by the associated complete set of idempotents for the ring. We apply these criteria to object unital category graded rings in general and, in particular, to the class of skew category algebras. Background: Three large randomized controlled trials of fluoxetine for stroke recovery have been performed. We performed an individual patient data meta-analysis (IPDM) on the combined data. Methods: Fixed effects meta-analyses were performed on the combined data set, for the primary outcome (modified Rankin scale (mRS) at 6 months), and secondary outcomes common to the individual trials. As a sensitivity analysis, summary statistics from each trial were created and combined. Findings: The three trials recruited a combined total of 5907 people (mean age 69.5 years (SD 12.3), 2256 (38%) females, 2–15 days post-stroke) from Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Sweden, and Vietnam; and randomized them to fluoxetine 20 mg daily or matching placebo for 6 months. Data on 5833 (98.75%) were available at 6 months. The adjusted ordinal comparison of mRS was similar in the two groups (common OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.87 to 1.05, p = 0.37). There were no statistically significant interactions between the minimization variables (baseline probability of being alive and independent at 6 months, time to treatment, motor deficit, or aphasia) and pre-specified subgroups (including age, pathological type, inability to assess mood, proxy or patient consent, baseline depression, country). Fluoxetine increased seizure risk (2.64% vs 1.8%, p = 0.03), falls with injury (6.26% vs 4.51%, p = 0.03), fractures (3.15% vs 1.39%, p < 0.0001) and hyponatremia (1.22% vs 0.61%, p = 0.01) but reduced new depression (10.05% vs 13.42%, p < 0.0001). At 12 months, there was no difference in adjusted mRS (n = 5760; common OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.89 to 1.07). Sensitivity analyses gave the same results. Interpretation: Fluoxetine 20 mg daily for 6 months did not improve functional recovery. It increased seizures, falls with injury, and bone fractures but reduced depression frequency at 6 months. Background: Despite pain control being a top priority in end-of-life care, pain continues to be a troublesome symptom and comprehensive data on pain prevalence and pain relief in patients with different diagnoses are scarce. Methods: The Swedish Register of Palliative Care (SRPC) was used to retrieve data from 2011 to 2022 about pain during the last week of life. Data were collected regarding occurrence of pain, whether pain was relieved and occurrence of severe pain, to examine if pain differed between patients with cancer, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and dementia. Binary logistic regression models adjusted for sex and age were used. Results: A total of 315 000 patients were included in the study. Pain during the last week of life was more commonly seen in cancer (81%) than in dementia (69%), heart failure (68%) or COPD (57%), also when controlled for age and sex, p < 0.001. Severe forms of pain were registered in 35% in patients with cancer, and in 17–21% in non-cancer patients. Complete pain relief (regardless of pain intensity) was achieved in 73–87% of those who experienced pain, depending on diagnosis. The proportion of patients with complete or partial pain relief was 99.8% for the whole group. Conclusions: The occurrence of pain, including severe pain, was less common in patients with heart failure, COPD or dementia, compared to patients with cancer. Compared with cancer, pain was more often fully relieved for patients with dementia, but less often in heart failure and COPD. As severe pain was seen in about a third of the cancer patients, the study still underlines the need for better pain management in the imminently dying. Aims/hypothesis: Obesity surgery (OS) and diet-induced weight loss rapidly improve insulin resistance. We aim to investigate the impact of either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) surgery compared with a diet low in energy (low-calorie diet; LCD) on body composition, glucose control and insulin sensitivity, assessed both at the global and tissue-specific level in individuals with obesity but not diabetes. Methods: In this parallel group randomised controlled trial, patients on a waiting list for OS were randomised (no blinding, sealed envelopes) to either undergo surgery directly or undergo an LCD before surgery. At baseline and 4 weeks after surgery (n=15, 11 RYGB and 4 SG) or 4 weeks after the start of LCD (n=9), investigations were carried out, including an OGTT and hyperinsulinaemic–euglycaemic clamps during which concomitant simultaneous whole-body [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (PET)/MRI was performed. The primary outcome was HOMA-IR change. Results: One month after bariatric surgery and initiation of LCD, both treatments induced similar reductions in body weight (mean ± SD: −7.7±1.4 kg and −7.4±2.2 kg, respectively), adipose tissue volume (7%) and liver fat content (2% units). HOMA-IR, a main endpoint, was significantly reduced following OS (−26.3% [95% CI −49.5, −3.0], p=0.009) and non-significantly following LCD (−20.9% [95% CI −58.2, 16.5). For both groups, there were similar reductions in triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol. Fasting plasma glucose and insulin were also significantly reduced only following OS. There was an increase in glucose AUC in response to an OGTT in the OS group (by 20%) but not in the LCD group. During hyperinsulinaemia, only the OS group showed a significantly increased PET-derived glucose uptake rate in skeletal muscle but a reduced uptake in the heart and abdominal adipose tissue. Both liver and brain glucose uptake rates were unchanged after surgery or LCD. Whole-body glucose disposal and endogenous glucose production were not significantly affected. Conclusions/interpretation: The short-term metabolic effects seen 4 weeks after OS are not explained by loss of body fat alone. Thus OS, but not LCD, led to reductions in fasting plasma glucose and insulin resistance as well as to distinct changes in insulin-stimulated glucose fluxes to different tissues. Such effects may contribute to the prevention or reversal of type 2 diabetes following OS. Moreover, the full effects on whole-body insulin resistance and plasma glucose require a longer time than 4 weeks. Objectives: This study aimed to retrospectively assess cardiac autonomic activity in children with LQTS, considering genotype, symptoms, sex, age, and beta‐blocker therapy (BB) and compare it to healthy controls. Methods: Heart rate variability (HRV), using power spectrum analysis, was analyzed in 575 Holter recordings from 116 children with LQTS and in 69 healthy children. The data were categorized into four age‐groups and four heart rate (HR) ranges. Results: In LQT1 and LQT2, increasing HR corresponded to significantly lower low (LF) and high frequency (HF) compared to controls. Total power (PTOT) was lower in all LQT1 age‐groups compared to controls at HR 120–140 bpm (1–15 years: p <.01; 15–18 years: p =.03). At HR 80–100, LQT1 patients aged 1–10 years had lower HF than LQT2 patients (1–5 years: p =.05; 5–10 years: p =.02), and LQT2 patients aged 15–18 years had lower HF than LQT1 patients (p <.01). Symptomatic patients aged 10–15 years had lower PTOT at HR 100–120 bpm than asymptomatic patients (p =.04). LQT1 girls aged 10–15 and 15–18 years had a lower PTOT (10–15 years: p =.04; 15–18 years: p =.02) than boys. Conclusion: This study shows a correlation between HR and changes in HRV parameters. At higher HRs, LQTS patients generally had lower HRV values than controls, suggesting an abnormal autonomic response. Background: More than a year after recovering from COVID-19, a large proportion of individuals, many of whom work in the healthcare sector, still report olfactory dysfunctions. However, olfactory dysfunction was common already before the COVID-19 pandemic, making it necessary to also consider the existing baseline prevalence of olfactory dysfunction. To establish the adjusted prevalence of COVID-19 related olfactory dysfunction, we assessed smell function in healthcare workers who had contracted COVID‐19 during the first wave of the pandemic using psychophysical testing. Methods: Participants were continuously tested for SARS‐CoV‐2 IgG antibodies since the beginning of the pandemic. To assess the baseline rate of olfactory dysfunction in the population and to control for the possibility of skewed recruitment of individuals with prior olfactory dysfunction, consistent SARS-CoV‐2 IgG naïve individuals were tested as a control group. Results: Fifteen months after contracting COVID‐19, 37% of healthcare workers demonstrated a quantitative reduction in their sense of smell, compared to only 20% of the individuals in the control group. Fifty-one percent of COVID‐19‐recovered individuals reported qualitative symptoms, compared to only 5% in the control group. In a follow-up study 2.6 years after COVID-19 diagnosis, 24% of all tested recovered individuals still experienced parosmia. Conclusions: In summary, 65% of healthcare workers experienced parosmia/hyposmia 15 months after contracting COVID-19. When compared to a control group, the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in the population increased by 41 percentage points. Parosmia symptoms were still lingering two-and-a half years later in 24% of SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals. Research on students' perceptions and understanding of technology has shown that students have a narrow view of technology: for example, technology is often manifested in students' descriptions as artefacts or objects. This study investigates the ways in which students' understanding of how technology is manifested expands during a series of classroom activities in technology. The study was conducted at a compulsory primary school with eight-year-old students. The data (video and audio recordings) were collected in small-group interactions and in whole-class discussions. In the interactions, the students utilised self-taken photographs to visualise their understanding and perception of technology's manifestations: object, activity, volition, and knowledge (Mitcham in Thinking through technology. The path between engineering and philosophy, The University of Chicago Press, 1994). Based on their prior knowledge, the students perceived technology as contemporary electrical artefacts. As they engage in a technology project, they develop and expand their understanding of how technology is manifested, as well as relate different manifestations to one another. The findings indicate that students achieve a more advanced understanding of technological manifestations compared to only discussing each manifestation of technology separately. Visual representations based on circular shapes are frequently used in visualization applications. One example are circos plots within bioinformatics, which bend graphs into a wheel of information with connective lines running through the center like spokes. The results are aesthetically appealing and impressive visualizations that fit long data sequences into a small quadratic space. However, the authors' experiences are that when asked, a visualization researcher would generally advise against making visualizations with radial layouts. Upon reviewing the literature we found that there is evidence that circular layouts are preferable in some cases, but we found no clear evidence for what layout is preferable for matrices and connective data in particular, which both are common data types in circos plots. In this work, we thus performed a user study to compare circular and linear layouts. The tasks are inspired by genomics data, but our results generalize to many other application areas, involving comparison and connective data. To build the prototype we utilized Gosling, a grammar for visualizing genomics data. We contribute empirical evidence on the suitedness of linear versus circular layouts, adding to the specific and general knowledge concerning perception of circular graphs. In addition, we contribute a case study evaluation of the grammar Gosling as a rapid prototyping language, confirming its utility and providing guidance on suitable areas for future development. Purpose: To investigate the acute exercise effects of dynamic standing exercise on blood glucose and blood lactate among children and adolescents with cerebral palsy who are nonambulant. Methods: Twenty-four participants with cerebral palsy who are nonambulant performed 30 minutes of dynamic standing exercise using a motorized device enabling assisted passive movements in an upright weight-bearing position. Capillary blood samples were taken from the fingertip for measurement of blood glucose and blood lactate at rest and at the end of exercise. Results: At rest, the participants had hyperlactatemia that was unaffected after exercise, presented as median and interquartile range at rest 1.8 (1.3:2.7) mmol/L, and after exercise 2.0 (1.1:2.5) mmol/L. Children and adolescents with Gross Motor Function Classification System, level V, had higher lactate levels at rest (2.5 [1.8:2.9] vs 1.4 [1.0:2.0]; P =.030) and after exercise (2.3 [2.0:2.6] vs 1.2 [0.9:2.2]; P =.032) compared with children and adolescents with Gross Motor Function Classification System, level IV, respectively. A statistically significant larger decrease in blood lactate levels after exercise was observed in children and adolescents with higher resting blood lactate levels (ρ =.56; P =.004). There were no statistically significant changes in blood glucose. Conclusions: Forty percentage of the participants had mild hyperlactatemia at rest and participants with the highest blood lactate levels at rest had the greatest decrease in blood lactate levels after one bout of exercise. Children and adolescents who were classified with the highest level of the Gross Motor Function Classification Scale had higher blood lactate levels. More studies are needed on how to prevent chronically high resting levels of lactate with exercise in children with cerebral palsy who are nonambulant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study focuses on the effect of an emerging source of waste, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode materials, on the hydrometallurgical recycling of the currently dominant industrial battery waste that is rich in transition metals (Ni, Co, Mn, and Li). The effects of the dosage of LFP, initial acidity, and timing of LFP reductant addition were investigated in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching (t = 3 h, T = 60 °C, ω = 300 rpm). The results showed that addition of LFP increased both transition metal extraction and acid consumption. Further, the redox potential was lowered due to the increased presence of Fe2+. An initial acidity of 2.0 mol/L H2SO4 with acid consumption of 1.3 kg H2SO4/kg black mass provided optimal conditions for achieving a high leaching yield (Co = 100%, Ni = 87.6%, Mn = 91.1%, Li = 100%) and creating process solutions (Co 8.8 g/L, Ni 13.8 g/L, Li 6.7 g/L, Mn 7.6 g/L, P 12.1 g/L) favorable for subsequent hydrometallurgical processing. Additionally, the overall efficiency of H2O2 decreased due to its decomposition by high concentrations of Fe2+ and Mn2+ when H2O2 was added after t = 2 h, leading to only a minor increase in final battery metals extraction levels. In standard books on calculus the existence of primitive functions of continuous functions is proved, in one way or another, using Riemann sums. In this note we present a completely different self-contained, however probably folkloristic, proof of this existence. Our proof combines, on the one hand, the so-called Stone Weierstrass theorem on uniform approximation of continuous functions on the unit interval by polynomials, and, on the other hand, a classical result from calculus on the existence of limits of differentiated sequences of functions. Simple Summary: This article reviews the value of Positron Emission Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PET/MRI) in evaluating female pelvic cancers. It also provides a comparative analysis of PET/MRI with other imaging modalities in the context of female pelvic malignancies and outlines their respective strengths and limitations. The aim of this narrative review is to introduce to clinicians up and coming technology and how it may be valuable to their assessment of female pelvic cancers. The diagnosis, treatment, and management of gynecologic malignancies benefit from both positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and MRI. PET/CT provides important information on the local extent of disease as well as diffuse metastatic involvement. MRI offers soft tissue delineation and loco-regional disease involvement. The combination of these two technologies is key in diagnosis, treatment planning, and evaluating treatment response in gynecological malignancies. This review aims to assess the performance of PET/MRI in gynecologic cancer patients and outlines the technical challenges and clinical advantages of PET/MR systems when specifically applied to gynecologic malignancies. Background: Computed tomography (CT) is an imaging modality commonly used for studies of internal body structures and very useful for detailed studies of body composition. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a fully automatic image registration framework for inter-subject CT slice registration. The aim was also to use the results, in a set of proof-of-concept studies, for voxel-wise statistical body composition analysis (Imiomics) of correlations between imaging and non-imaging data. Methods: The current study utilized three single-slice CT images of the liver, abdomen, and thigh from two large cohort studies, SCAPIS and IGT. The image registration method developed and evaluated used both CT images together with image-derived tissue and organ segmentation masks. To evaluate the performance of the registration method, a set of baseline 3-single-slice CT images (from 2780 subjects including 8285 slices) from the SCAPIS and IGT cohorts were registered. Vector magnitude and intensity magnitude error indicating inverse consistency were used for evaluation. Image registration results were further used for voxel-wise analysis of associations between the CT images (as represented by tissue volume from Hounsfield unit and Jacobian determinant) and various explicit measurements of various tissues, fat depots, and organs collected in both cohort studies. Results: Our findings demonstrated that the key organs and anatomical structures were registered appropriately. The evaluation parameters of inverse consistency, such as vector magnitude and intensity magnitude error, were on average less than 3 mm and 50 Hounsfield units. The registration followed by Imiomics analysis enabled the examination of associations between various explicit measurements (liver, spleen, abdominal muscle, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), thigh SAT, intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT), and thigh muscle) and the voxel-wise image information. Conclusion: The developed and evaluated framework allows accurate image registrations of the collected three single-slice CT images and enables detailed voxel-wise studies of associations between body composition and associated diseases and risk factors. Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in a variety of biological functions including blood vessel dilation and neurotransmitter release. In animals, NO has been demonstrated to affect multiple behavioral outcomes, such as memory performance and arousal, whereas this link is less explored in humans. NO is created in the paranasal sinuses and studies show that humming releases paranasal NO to the nasal tract and that NO can then cross the blood brain barrier. Akin to animal models, we hypothesized that this NO may traverse into the brain and positively affect information processing. In contrast to our hypothesis, an articulatory suppression memory paradigm and a speeded detection task found deleterious effects of humming while performing the task. Likewise, we found no effect of humming on emotional processing of photos. In a fourth experiment, participants hummed before each trial in a speeded detection task, but we again found no effect on response time. In conclusion, either nasal NO does not travel to the brain, or NO in the brain does not have the expected impact on cognitive performance and emotional processing in humans. Recent studies have indicated that breathing shapes the underlying oscillatory brain activity critical for episodic memory, potentially impacting memory performance. However, the literature has presented conflicting results, with some studies suggesting that nasal inhalation enhances visual memory performance, while others have failed to observe any significant effects. Furthermore, the specific influence of breathing route (nasal vs. mouth) and the precise phase of the respiratory cycle during which stimuli are presented have remained elusive. To address this, we employed a visual recognition memory (VRM) and electroencephalography paradigm in which stimuli presentation was phase‐locked to either inhalation or exhalation onset, using a within‐subject design where participants performed the memory task while engaging in separate sessions of nose and mouth breathing. We show that neither breathing route nor breathing phase has a significant impact on VRM performance as measured by d‐prime, with the data supporting the null hypothesis. However, we did find an effect of breathing phase on response bias, with participants adopting a more conservative decision criterion during exhalation. Moreover, we found that breathing phase during memory encoding shaped the late parietal effect (LPE) amplitude, while the Frontal Negative Component (FN400) and LPE during recognition were less impacted. While our study demonstrates that breathing does not shape VRM performance, it shows that it influences brain activity, reinforcing the importance of further research to elucidate the extent of respiratory influence on perception, cognition, and behavior. We demonstrate that phase‐locked breathing through the nose and mouth does not shape episodic visual recognition memory performance but does impact underlying event‐related potentials and response bias criterion. Like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in humans, collagen‐induced arthritis (CIA) in mice is associated with not only MHC class II genetic polymorphism but also, to some extent, with other loci including genes encoding Fc gamma receptors (FCGRs) and complement C5. In this study, we used a cartilage antibody‐induced arthritis (CAIA) model in which arthritis develops within a 12‐h timeframe, to determine the relative importance of FCGRs and C5 (Hc). In CAIA, inhibiting or deleting FCGR3 substantially hindered arthritis development, underscoring the crucial role of this receptor. Blocking FCGR3 also reduced the levels of FCGR4, and vice versa. When employing an IgG1 arthritogenic cocktail that exclusively interacts with FCGR2B and FCGR3, joint inflammation was promptly initiated in Fcgr2b−− mice but not in Fcgr3−− mice, suggesting that FCGR3 is sufficient for CAIA development. Regarding complement activation, Fcgr2b++.Hc** mice with C5 mutated were fully resistant to CAIA, whereas Fcgr2b−−.Hc** mice developed arthritis rapidly. We conclude that FCGR3 is essential and sufficient for CAIA development, particularly when induced by IgG1 antibodies. The human ortholog of mouse FCGR3, FCGR2A, may be associated with RA pathogenesis. FCGR2B deficiency allows for rapid arthritis progression and overrides the resistance conferred by C5 deficiency. The use of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is continuously growing, leading to a corresponding increase in the volume of end-of-life LIBs. Recycling of LIBs not only ensures the safe management of hazardous waste, but also minimizes the losses of valuable materials. While for some battery metals, such as Co, Ni, and Cu, industrial recovery processes have already been established, graphite is currently discarded as waste. This research introduces an innovative approach to create a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst by using the graphite waste fraction from hydrometallurgical recycling. Notably, we strategically utilized the residual metals left in the graphite fraction to achieve high electrocatalytic activity for both the ORR and OER under alkaline conditions. Our novel black mass-derived oxygen electrocatalyst was used as an air cathode catalyst in Zn–air batteries and demonstrated a high power density of 104 mW cm−2 with outstanding long-term stability of 80 hours. Rewards are a broad category of stimuli inducing approach behavior to aid survival. Extensive evidence from animal research has shown that wanting (the motivation to pursue a reward) and liking (the pleasure associated with its consumption) are mostly regulated by dopaminergic and opioidergic activity in dedicated brain areas. However, less is known about the neuroanatomy of dopaminergic and opioidergic regulation of reward processing in humans, especially when considering different types of rewards (i.e., social and nonsocial). To fill this gap of knowledge, we combined dopaminergic and opioidergic antagonism (via amisulpride and naltrexone administration) with functional neuroimaging to investigate the neurochemical and neuroanatomical bases of wanting and liking of matched nonsocial (food) and social (interpersonal touch) rewards, using a randomized, between‐subject, placebo‐controlled, double‐blind design. While no drug effect was observed at the behavioral level, brain activity was modulated by the administered compounds. In particular, opioid antagonism, compared to placebo, reduced activity in the medial orbitofrontal cortex during consumption of the most valued social and nonsocial rewards. Dopamine antagonism, however, had no clear effects on brain activity in response to reward anticipation. These findings provide insights into the neurobiology of human reward processing and suggest a similar opioidergic regulation of the neural responses to social and nonsocial reward consumption. Sex education can be described as an important part of health education in school and one way of strengthening health education could be a collaboration between different professionals in the school team. The aim of this study was to describe teachers' and school nurses' experiences and perspectives with regard to sex education among students aged 11–12 years and to explore potential influencing factors. We employed a qualitative design, and the teachers and school nurses were interviewed individually. A thematic analysis was conducted on the interviews and the results showed that the classroom was considered to be the teacher's arena. Tradition and attitudes between professionals could be obstacles that affect collaboration between teachers and nurses and the study showed that there remains much to be done before collaboration at the same level between the groups can be established. Most of the world's copper is produced via copper electrorefining, where nickel is the most abundant impurity in the process. Previously it has been suggested that nickel affects the adhesion of anode slimes on the anode as well as the porosity of the slime layer that forms. This paper investigates the effects of nickel, oxygen, sulphuric acid and temperature on the detachment of anode slimes from the anode surface. The detachment of particles as a function of both anode and electrolyte composition was studied on laboratory scale using a camera connected to a Raspberry Pi, and particle detection and movement analysed using TrackPy. The results revealed four different slime detachment mechanisms: cloud formation, individual particle detachment, cluster detachment and avalanche. These were found to be dependent on the electrolyte (0, 10, 20, 30 g/dm³ Ni2+ & 100, 200 g/dm³ H2SO4), with increasing nickel concentration promoting cluster detachment and increasing sulphuric acid concentration favouring detachment of individual particles. Anode composition (0.05-0.44 wt% O and 0.07-0.64 wt% Ni) was shown to affect the flow direction of anode slimes, with increasing nickel leading to more upward-flowing slimes. Typical particle movement velocities were from -0.5 to 1.0 mm/s regardless of the electrolyte and anode composition, and regardless of the operating temperature (25 °C & 60 °C) for small particles (<0.5 mm). The results also support previous findings that increasing the nickel concentration of the electrolyte leads to a more porous anode slime layer on the anode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
