Deterioration of water quality is a serious problem that continues to face the environment due to the discharge of untreated wastewater into water bodies. The present systematic review and meta-analysis research evaluated the efficacy of micro/nano bubbles (MNB) in the treatment of polluted effluents in relation to BOD and COD. The research was of quantitative approach, applied type and non-experimental design. The scientific articles were collected from Scopus and Web of Science databases from the period of January 2011 to November 2021. The results showed that only five investigations were included and subjected to meta-analysis. Those studies indicated that treatment with MNBs achieved removals between 69 to 100% and 68 to 99% for BOD5 and COD, respectively. The best removal efficiency (97% COD and 100% BOD5) was achieved in the scientific investigation of Rameshkumar (Rameshkumar et al. 2019). We study three well-known minimization problems in Hilbert spaces: the weighted least squares problem and the related problems of abstract splines and smoothing. In each case, we analyse the solvability of the problem for every point of the Hilbert space in the corresponding data set, the existence of an operator that maps each data point to its solution in a linear and continuous way, and the solvability of the associated operator problem in a fixed p-Schatten norm. Infant hemangioma (IH) is the most common tumor in infants, which affects 5-10% of white children. It is a tumor of vascular origin that appears in the first months of life. The indication for the treatment of the IH is not approved in the datasheet of the product, however it has been used in the infant hemangioma by topical administration as an alternative to oral propranolol, avoiding the main problems of the oral route (bradycardia and hypotension). The objective of this work is to study the physical and chemical (HPLC stability indicating method) stability of a 0.5% timolol gel for topical application during 60 days (considering the stability limit as 90% of initial concentration of timolol maleate). The gel was prepared with a polyacrylic acid derivative and the physical stability of the system was studied by visual control, rheological and mechanical characterization. The studied formulation guarantees the correct dose administering and stability after 60 days stored at 25 ± 2 °C and light protected (tube of aluminum). We have developed an easy topical gel for the treatment of infant hemangioma with physical and chemical stability higher than those provided by the majority of hospitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper the characteristics and rheological behavior of crude olive-pomace oil extracted by mechanical and chemical means throughout one harvest period have been studied. Oils were turbid at 25°C and behaved as non-Newtonian fluids. While the mechanically extracted samples fitted to the rheological model of Herschel-Bulkley, the chemical extracted samples fitted better to the model of Ostwald-De Waele or Power Law. The mechanical properties of the olive-pomace oils have been studied from rotational rheological point of view in order to obtain information about the flow behavior and the viscosity, necessary in different fields of application for the design, development, optimization, and quality control of new formulations with this type of oil. Few studies have formally examined the relationship between meteorological factors and the incidence of child pneumonia in the tropics, despite the fact that most child pneumonia deaths occur there. We examined the association between four meteorological exposures (rainy days, sunshine, relative humidity, temperature) and the incidence of clinical pneumonia in young children in the Philippines using three time-series methods: correlation of seasonal patterns, distributed lag regression, and case-crossover. Lack of sunshine was most strongly associated with pneumonia in both lagged regression [overall relative risk over the following 60 days for a 1-h increase in sunshine per day was 0·67 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0·51–0·87)] and case-crossover analysis [odds ratio for a 1-h increase in mean daily sunshine 8–14 days earlier was 0·95 (95% CI 0·91–1·00)]. We present extensive first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations dedicated to analyze the magnetic and electronic properties of small V n clusters ( n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) embedded in a Cu fcc matrix. We consider different cluster structures such as: (i) a single V impurity, (ii) several V2 dimers having different interatomic distance and varying local atomic environment, (iii) V3 and (iv) V4 clusters for which we assume compact as well as 2- and 1-dimensional atomic configurations and finally, in the case of the (v) V5 and (vi) V6 structures we consider a square pyramid and a square bipyramid together with linear arrays, respectively. In all cases, the V atoms are embedded as substitutional impurities in the Cu network. In general, and as in the free standing case, we have found that the V clusters tend to form compact atomic arrays within the cooper matrix. Our calculated non spin-polarized density of states at the V sites shows a complex peaked structure around the Fermi level that strongly changes as a function of both the interatomic distance and local atomic environment, a result that anticipates a non trivial magnetic behavior. In fact, our DFT calculations reveal, in each one of our clusters systems, the existence of different magnetic solutions (ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and antiferromagnetic) with very small energy differences among them, a result that could lead to the existence of complex finite-temperature magnetic properties. The electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of Ru and Rh thin films on Ag(001) substrate are investigated by means of density functional calculations. The generalized gradient approximation is used to treat the exchange correlation potential. Alloying, burying, and fully relaxing effects are considered for different degrees of coverage: 0.25, 0.50, 1 and 2 ML. Alloying and burying effects reduce the magnetic moments while fully relaxing effects enlarge them. For Ru, the magnetic moment is high for 0.25 ML and vanishes for 2 ML; however, for Rh, the magnetic moment remains high even for 2 ML. Nevertheless, when cluster formation is analysed we conclude that the absence of magnetism in a number of previous experimental works could be attributed to the formation of big size clusters. Curbs are used as physical markers to delimit roads and to redirect traffic into multiple directions (e.g., islands and roundabouts). Detection of road curbs is a fundamental task for autonomous vehicle navigation in urban environments. Since almost two decades, solutions that use various types of sensors, including vision, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors, among others, have emerged to address the curb detection problem. This survey elaborates on the advances of road curb detection problems, a research field that has grown over the last two decades and continues to be the ground for new theoretical and applied developments. We identify the tasks involved in the road curb detection methods and their applications on autonomous vehicle navigation and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). The hyperpolarization-activated Ih channel is modulated by neurotransmitters acting through the cAMP messenger system. In rat olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs), dopamine, by inhibition of adenylyl cyclase, shifts the voltage of half-maximal activation (V1/2) of Ih to more negative potentials and decreases Ih maximal relative conductance. Whether these effects result from a phosphorylation-dependent mechanism is unclear. Therefore, we used whole-cell patch-clamp recording techniques to study cAMP-dependent phosphorylation via PKA on Ih in rat ORNs. General protein kinase inhibition (50 nM K252a) produced a hyperpolarizing shift in Ih V1/2 and decreased Ih maximal conductance. Specific inhibition of PKA with H-89 (500 nM) also shifted the V1/2 of Ih to more negative potentials, and, in some cells, decreased Ih maximal conductance. PKA-mediated phosphorylation (cBIMPS, 50 mM) shifted Ih V1/2 more positive, modulated the kinetics of Ih channel activation and increased Ih peak current amplitude. Internal perfusion of the catalytic subunit of PKA (84 nM) also shifted Ih V1/2 positive and this shift was blocked by co-perfusion with PKI (50 nM). These results show that in rat ORNs, the voltage dependence of Ih activation can be modulated by PKA-dependent phosphorylation. We also show that PKA and other protein kinases may be involved in the regulation of Ih maximal conductance. The objective of this study was to develop a variety of sensory stimulation products for the behavioral intervention of patients with Alzheimer's type dementia. Many caregivers have relied on physical and chemical restraints as the primary method of patient intervention due to the lack of appropriate dementia management products. This significantly lowers the sufferer's quality of care and life. As the age group most susceptible to Alzheimer's disease (65 and older) is the fastest growing segment of our society, an appropriate care solution must be sought. The specific aim of this study was to develop products that are sensory satisfying for the Alzheimer's patient that exhibits self-stimulatory wandering behavior. Sensory satisfying objects for product development would be determined through structured observations of self-stimulatory wanderers in an institutionalized setting. Variations of product design and mounting would be pursued in order to develop products that are not only safe and effective for patient use, but are easy for the caregiver to implement and maintain. Such products would have widespread commercial application in both the institutional and private care settings such as nursing homes, adult day care facilities, Alzheimer's care facilities, convalescent homes, mental health institutions, and assisted-living facilities. Recent magneto-optical kerr effect and low energy electron diffraction experiments on V(001) surface probed the existence of surface magnetism. Following these experiments the authors performed an ab initio study for the magnetic states of V(001) surface using a plane wave self-consistent field code. The generalized gradient approximation is used to treat the exchange correlation potential. Structural optimization is considered for the systems. The results obtained from the study of V(001) bcc surface show metastable magnetic states with an energy difference, with respect to the ground state, less than 10 meV/atom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this project was to determine the feasibility of developing sensory stimulation products for the Alzheimer's-type dementia patients exhibiting 'null' behavior in order to increase their quality of care and quality of life. The research subjects were selected from a population of 49 residents living on a special dementia unit in a 228-bed nursing home. This population represented a cross section of the local community, inclusive of women and minorities. Sensory satisfying objects were determined through structured observations of patients in the institutionalized setting to meet criteria of safety and effectiveness for patient use and caregiver implementation. The rheology of non-Newtonian fluid systems is complex. Their experimental study is difficult because of the existence of many dependent variables. In the present work, a mathematical equation is proposed to calculate the spread surface from a simple viscosimetric study in a theoretical way. It was determined for multiple parameters. The spread surface has to be marked because of its direct relation to the shear stress; this fact enabled us to connect one variable dependent on the compression deformation with another dependent on the shear deformation. We used nystatin-patch techniques to characterize the responses of squid olfactory receptor neurons to the attractive odorant, L-glutamate, and to study mixture interactions between glutamate and the aversive odorant, betaine. We report that glutamate activates a cation-selective conductance that is permeable to Ca2+, K+, and Na+ and which would depolarize squid olfactory receptor neurons under physiological conditions. The responses to glutamate were concentration dependent. The EC50 of individual cells ranged from 0.3 mmol · l-1 to 85.0 mmol · l-1. We found that individual cells were capable of responding to both glutamate and betaine, and that the relative magnitudes of these responses varied from cell to cell. Finally, we report that current responses to binary mixtures of glutamate and betaine are suppressed relative to the sum of the responses to the individual odors in single squid olfactory receptor neurons. Squid olfactory receptor neurons are primary bipolar sensory neurons capable of transducing water-born odorant signals into electrical impulses that are transmitted to the brain. In this study, we have identified and characterized the macroscopic properties of voltage-gated Na+ channels in olfactory receptor neurons from the squid Lolliguncula brevis. Using whole-cell voltage-clamp techniques, we found that the voltage-gated Na+ channels were tetrodotoxin sensitive and had current densities ranging from 5 to 169 pA pF−1. Analyses of the voltage dependence and kinetics revealed interesting differences from voltage-gated Na+ channels in olfactory receptor neurons from other species; the voltage of half-inactivation was shifted to the right and the voltage of half-activation was shifted to the left such that a “window-current” occurred, where 10–18% of the Na+ channels activated and did not inactivate at potentials near action potential threshold. Our findings suggest that in squid olfactory neurons, a subset of voltage-gated Na+ channels may play a role in generating a pacemaker-type current for setting the tonic levels of electrical activity required for transmission of hyperpolarizing odor responses to the brain. Cell suspension cultures of Datura innoxia were incubated in the presence of the nitro-substituted explosives 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazocyclooctane (HMX). Cellular tolerance levels and TNT biotransformation kinetics were examined. Tolerance to TNT varied as cell suspensions aged. Concentrations of RDX or HMX in excess of reported solubility limits produced no observable changes in cell viability. GC/MS analysis of TNT-treated cell media and cell lysates revealed rapid removal of TNT. Within 12 h, less than 1% of the initial TNT remained in the growth medium. Aminodinitrotoluenes (ADNTs), known metabolites of TNT, accumulated transiently in cell lysates, and to a lesser extent in cell media. ADNT concentrations started to decrease after 3 h. After 12 h, less than 5% of the initial TNT could be detected as ADNT. Total ADNTs never exceeded 26% of initial TNT, suggesting that additional biotransformation steps also occurred. No other nitroaromatics were detected. A pseudo-first order rate constant for TNT clearance was calculated, k=0.40 h−1. D. innoxia cell suspension cultures demonstrated virtually complete clearance of TNT and of subsequent ADNT metabolites in less than 12 h. Isolated olfactory receptor neurons from the squid Lolliguncula brevis respond to betaine, a repellent odorant, with hyperpolarizing receptor potentials. Using perforated-patch techniques, we determined that the hyperpolarizing conductance was selective for Cl− and could be reversibly blocked by the Cl− channel blockers 4-acetamido-4′-isothio-cyanatistilbene-2,2′disulfonic acid and niflumic acid. Gramicidin-patch recordings revealed that [Cl−]i in squid olfactory receptor neurons is normally very low compared to vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons, and that activating a Cl− conductance would hyperpolarize the cell in vivo. The lack of dependence on internal or external K+ or Na+ ruled out the possibility that the Cl− conductance was generated by a cation-dependent cotransporter or pump. Common G-protein-dependent signalling pathways, including phospholipase C, arachidonic acid, and cyclic nucleotides, do not appear to be involved. Ca2+ imaging experiments showed that betaine did not affect [Ca2+]i, suggesting that the Cl− current is not Ca2+ dependent. The purpose of this research was to describe wandering behaviors of institutionalized patients with Alzheimer's disease in their natural environment. Such descriptive information is necessary before successful product and/or nursing intervention programs can be developed. Videotaped behavioral observations yielded detailed data descriptive of patients with middle and later dementia. These patients have the physical ability to perform various functions, activities, or actions; the individual's mental ability is less supportive of physical ability. The degree of task simplicity required to enable the patient to complete unsupervised tasks depends on the level of dementia. The effects of stone and pin milling (with and without subsequent extrusion) on quality parameters of tortilla flour were studied and quantified with the aid of a laboratory extruder. The viscoamylograms of selected flour samples were also determined. Results revealed that tortilla flour of good quality could be obtained by stone milling (with or without subsequent extrusion) but not pin milling, even with subsequent extrusion. Although the stone milled samples reflected adequate flour quality parameters, their viscoamylograms were different in many respects from that of a commercial tortilla flour sample which resembled the viscoamylogram of raw flour. In this article, we show an alternative low-cost fabrication method to obtain poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic devices. The proposed method allows the inscription of micron resolution channels on polystyrene (PS) surfaces, used as a mold for the wanted microchip's production, by applying a high absorption coating film on the PS surface to ablate it with a focused low-power visible laser. The method allows for obtaining micro-resolution channels at powers between 2 and 10 mW and can realize any two-dimensional polymeric devices. Simple Summary: Titi monkeys—a diversified group of pair-bonded, territorial neotropical primates exhibiting biparental care—produce elaborate, powerful vocal duets used for long-range communication. While the callicebine taxonomy has been centered mainly on the biogeography, morphology, anatomy, and genetics of titi populations, vocal attributes have received little attention as potentially informative markers of phylogenetic relationships. We conducted acoustic analysis of callicebine loud calls recorded from ten species of titis at sites in Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador and found four distinct patterns of duetting that only partially match three major clades identified in recent molecular genetic studies. In particular, we found that the loud calls of the San Martin titi monkey, P. oenanthe, and the Urubamba brown titi, P. urubambensis, strikingly differ from putative relatives within the donacophilus lineage. Our findings highlight interplay between genes and environment on the expression of vocal behavior and suggest that closer interaction between taxonomists, ethologists, and molecular biologists should be rewarding in resolving the callicebine phylogeny. Such concerted efforts, in turn, will most likely generate valuable recommendations for the conservation of some endangered populations of titi monkeys, such as the vocally distinctive San Martin titi. Long-range vocal communication in socially monogamous titi monkeys is mediated by the production of loud, advertising calls in the form of solos, duets, and choruses. We conducted a power spectral analysis of duets and choruses (simply "duets" hereafter) followed by linear discriminant analysis using three acoustic parameters—dominant frequency of the combined signal, duet sequence duration, and pant call rate—comparing the coordinated vocalizations recorded from 36 family groups at 18 sites in Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. Our analysis identified four distinct duetting patterns: (1) a donacophilus pattern, sensu stricto, characteristic of P. donacophilus, P. pallescens, P. olallae, and P. modestus; (2) a moloch pattern comprising P. discolor, P. toppini, P. aureipalatii, and P. urubambensis; (3) a torquatus pattern exemplified by the duet of Cheracebus lucifer; and (4) the distinctive duet of P. oenanthe, a putative member of the donacophilus group, which is characterized by a mix of broadband and narrowband syllables, many of which are unique to this species. We also document a sex-related difference in the bellow-pant phrase combination among the three taxa sampled from the moloch lineage. Our data reveal a presumptive taxonomic incoherence illustrated by the distinctive loud calls of both P. urubambensis and P. oenanthe within the donacophilus lineage, sensu largo. The results are discussed in light of recent reassessments of the callicebine phylogeny, based on a suite of genetic studies, and the potential contribution of environmental influences, including habitat acoustics and social learning. A better knowledge of callicebine loud calls may also impact the conservation of critically endangered populations, such as the vocally distinctive Peruvian endemic, the San Martin titi, P. oenanthe. The exact nonlinear acoustic wave equation, derived from conservation of momentum, mass, and the equation of state, was used to average out the spatial dependence and obtain a forced anharmonic oscillator equation for the time-dependent part. The non-linearity is expressed by a resistive-restoring coupling term [open_aye]xx, rather than the restoring term αx2 + βx3 in the modified Duffing equation. A solution is sought in the form of a Fourier series, including all harmonics, and the equation is solved by a perturbation technique, retaining the dominant term in each harmonic. This results in an infinite system of coupled, nonlinear algebraic equations and leads to non-Lorentzian response curves for a sinusoidally driven resonator. These response curves are evaluated numerically and compared with predictions of the Duffing equation and with recent measurements of response curves and harmonic generation in an acoustic resonance chamber (M.
