Circular crack models with a constant rupture velocity struggle to effectively model both the amplitude and duration of first P-wave pulses generated by small magnitude seismic events. Assuming a constant rupture velocity is unphysical, necessitating a deceleration phase in the rupture velocity to uphold the causality of the healing process. Moreover, a comprehensive failure model might encompass an initial nucleation phase, typically characterized by an increase of the initial rupture velocity. Studies have demonstrated that quasi-dynamic circular crack models featuring variable rupture velocities can accurately model the shape of the observed first P-wave pulse. Based on these principles, an Empirical Green's function (EGF) approach was previously formulated to estimate the source parameters of small magnitude earthquakes, called MAIN. In addition to determine the source radius and stress drop, this method also enables the inference of the temporal evolution of rupture velocity. However, this method encounters difficulties when the noise-to-signal ratio in the recordings of smaller earthquakes used as EGF exceeds 5%, a common situation when employing regional-scale recordings of small-magnitude earthquakes as EGF. Through synthetic tests, we demonstrated that, in such instances, the problem of this technique is that the alignment between the onset of P waves of EGF and MAIN is not rightly recovered after the initial inversion step. Consequently, a novel inversion method has been developed to address this issue, enabling the identification of the optimal alignment of P-wave arrivals in EGF and MAIN across all stations. A Bayesian statistical approach is proposed to meticulously investigate the solutions of model parameters and their correlations. Using the new technique on a small magnitude earthquake (ML = 3.3) occurred in Central Italy enabled us to identify the most likely rupture models and examine the issue of correlation among model parameters. We have provided the first estimate of scattering and intrinsic attenuation for the Gargano Promontory (Southern Italy) analyzing 190 local earthquakes with ML ranging from 1.0 to 2.8. To separate the intrinsic Q i and scattering Q s quality factors with the Wennerberg approach (1993), we have measured the direct S waves and coda quality factors ( Q β , Q c ) in the same volume of crust. Q β parameter is derived with the coda normalization method (Aki 1980) and Q c factor is derived with the coda envelope decay method (Sato 1977). We selected the coda envelope by performing an automatic picking procedure from T start = 1.5 T S up to 30 s after origin time (lapse time T L ). All the obtained quality factors clearly increase with frequency. The Q c values correspond to those recently obtained for the area. The estimated Q i are comparable to the Q c at all frequencies and range between 100 and 1000. The Q s parameter shows higher values than Q i , except for 8 Hz, where the two estimates are closer. This implies a predominance of intrinsic attenuation over the scattering attenuation. Furthermore, the similarity between Q i and Q c allows us to interpret the high Q c anomaly previously found in the northern Gargano Promontory up to a depth of 24 km, as a volume of crust characterized by very low seismic dumping produced by conversion of seismic energy into heat. The distribution of entangled states is a key task of utmost importance for many quantum information processing protocols. A commonly adopted setup for distributing quantum states envisages the creation of the state in one location, which is then sent to (possibly different) distant receivers through some quantum channels. While it is undoubted and, perhaps, intuitively expected that the distribution of entangled quantum states is less efficient than that of product states, a thorough quantification of this inefficiency (namely, of the difference between the quantum-state transfer fidelity for entangled and factorized states) has not been performed. To this end, in this work, we consider n-independent amplitude-damping channels, acting in parallel, i.e., each, locally, on one part of an n-qubit state. We derive exact analytical results for the fidelity decrease, with respect to the case of product states, in the presence of entanglement in the initial state, for up to four qubits. Interestingly, we find that genuine multipartite entanglement has a more detrimental effect on the fidelity than two-qubit entanglement. Our results hint at the fact that, for larger n-qubit states, the difference in the average fidelity between product and entangled states increases with increasing single-qubit fidelity, thus making the latter a less trustworthy figure of merit. (1) Background: In our previous study, acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients showed increased levels of circulating miRNAs (-195-5p and -451a) involved in vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) regulation. Here, we evaluated, for the first time, both circulating miRNAs in acute intracerebral hemorrhagic (ICH) patients. (2) Methods: Circulating miRNAs and serum VEGF-A were assessed by real-time PCR and ELISA in 20 acute ICH, 21 AIS patients, and 21 controls. These were evaluated at hospital admission (T0) and after 96 h (T96) from admission. (3) Results: At T0, circulating miRNAs were five-times up-regulated in AIS patients, tending to decrease at T96. By contrast, in the acute ICH group, circulating miRNAs were significantly increased at both T0 and T96. Moreover, a significant decrease was observed in serum VEGF-A levels at T0 in AIS patients, tending to increase at T96. Conversely, in acute ICH patients, the levels of VEGF-A were significantly decreased at both T0 and T96. (4) Conclusions: The absence of a reduction in circulating miRNAs (195-5p and -451a), reported in acute ICH subjects after 96 h from hospital admission, together with the absence of increment of serum VEGF-A, may represent useful biomarkers indicating the severe brain damage status that characterizes acute ICH patients. We investigate crustal seismic attenuation by the coda quality parameter ( Q c ) in the Gargano area (Southern Italy), using a recently released dataset composed of 191 small earthquakes (1.0 ≤ ML ≤ 2.8) recorded by the local OTRIONS and the Italian INGV seismic networks, over three years of seismic monitoring. Following the single back-scattering theoretical assumption, Q c was computed using different frequencies (in the range of 2–16 Hz) and different lapse times (from 10 to 40 s). The trend of Q c vs. frequency is the same as that observed in the adjacent Umbria-Marche region. Q c at 1 Hz varies between 11 and 63, indicating that the area is characterized by active tectonics, despite the absence of high-magnitude earthquakes in recent decades. The 3D mapping procedure, based on sensitivity kernels, revealed that the Gargano Promontory is characterized by very low and homogeneous Q c at low frequencies, and by high and heterogeneous Q c at high frequencies. The lateral variations of Q c at 12 Hz follow the trend of the Moho in this region and are in good agreement with other geophysical observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has long been recognized that emission of radiation from atoms is not an intrinsic property of individual atoms themselves, but it is largely affected by the characteristics of the photonic environment and by the collective interaction among the atoms. A general belief is that preventing full decay and/or decoherence requires the existence of dark states, i.e., dressed light-atom states that do not decay despite the dissipative environment. Here, we show that, contrary to such a common wisdom, decoherence suppression can be intermittently achieved on a limited time scale, without the need for any dark state, when the atom is coupled to a chiral ring environment, leading to a highly non-exponential staircase decay. This effect, that we refer to as intermittent decoherence blockade, arises from periodic destructive interference between light emitted in the present and light emitted in the past, i.e., from delayed coherent quantum feedback. The transfer of excitations between different locations of a quantum many-body system is of primary importance in many research areas, from transport properties in spintronics and atomtronics to quantum state transfer in quantum information processing. We address the transfer of n > 1 bosonic and fermionic excitations between the edges of a one-dimensional chain modelled by a quadratic hopping Hamiltonian, where the block edges, embodying the sender and the receiver sites, are weakly coupled to the quantum wire. We find that perturbative high-quality transfer is attainable in the weak-coupling limit, for both bosons and fermions, only for certain modular arithmetic equivalence classes of the wire's length. This study aims to recognize the influence of source- and path-effects on seismic spectra using the waveform data from the 2009 seismic activity, Harrat Lunayyir (HL), eastern flank of the Red Sea coastline, Saudi Arabia. This seismic activity is considered as a series of continuously evolving events reaching at some stage the maximum on 19 May 2009, with the largest shock of Mw 5.4, and then decayed. A total number of 218 events of magnitudes ML ≥ 2.0 were analyzed, which include the largest shock, 101 and 116 seismic events representing the seismic events within the early and decay stages, respectively. The data analysis using Frequency-time analysis revealed diversity patterns of frequency contents along the recorded seismic stations. Moreover, the modified WADATI diagram showed VP/VS variations of 1.7 ± 0.003 and 1.72 ± 0.002 before and after the occurrence of the largest-sized event among the HL seismic activity, respectively. Using the grid-search method to recover the space parameters representing the average source spectrum of each earthquake over the recorded seismic stations, estimates of source sizes and stress drops imply variations in self-similarity scaling relationship among the HL seismic activity. According to the results obtained from the current analyses, we propose a scenario began with an emplacement of seismic activity due to the local stress accumulation imports from an upward dike injection that is blocked by cooled and hardened magmatic materials in the upper crust from the earlier intrusions. The stress accumulation continued and was then released, at some stage, by the event having the maximum magnitude followed by seismic activities released due to stress relaxations. We consider a thermo-rheological model made of a viscoelastic half-space with Maxwell rheology and temperature-dependent viscosity. The half-space is made of layers with different values of density, thermal conductivity, activation energy and heat productivity. The model relates the surface heat flow to the depth of the brittle-ductile transition and the thickness of the seismogenic layer. The model is applied to the Gargano area (Italy) which is subject to a frequent low-magnitude seismic activity, although it lies out of the Apennine axis, which is the main Italian seismogenic area. The seismic activity in the Gargano area and surroundings occurs at depths that are systematically different in the north-eastern zone with respect to the south-western zone. In correspondence with the change in depth of earthquake foci, we observe a change in the value of surface heat flow. Starting from these observations and from the knowledge of the lithospheric structure, we propose two different geotherms for the two zones. Assuming a constant strain rate, the shear stress is computed as a function of depth and the thickness of the seismogenic layer in the two zones is inferred. We modelled thermo-rheological perturbations, related to the emplacement of a magmatic body in the upper crust. This approach was considered relevant for the areas characterized by elevated surface heat flow and chiefly for the geothermal fields. The numerical conductive thermal model applied to the Larderello geothermal area in Tuscany, allowed to constrain size, depth and timing of emplacement of the pluton. We inferred that the emplacement of a magmatic body, at a minimum depth of 3 km, having a horizontal extension of 14 km and a maximum thickness of 8 km, can reasonably reproduce the observed regional surface heat flow anomaly of the Larderello area, when 300 (± 100) kyr are elapsed from the magma emplacement. Even assuming an incremental growth, the first magma injection should not be older than 1 ± 0.3 Ma. Results of the thermal model were used to set up a rheological model and to simulate the drifting of the brittle-ductile transition during the cooling of the pluton. A comparison with the K-horizon profile, a prominent seismic reflector in the Larderello area, was then performed. It was recently shown [S. Lorenzo, F. Lombardo, F. Ciccarello and M. Palma, Sci. Rep. 7 (2017) 42729] that the presence of static disorder in a bosonic bath - whose normal modes thus become all Anderson-localized - leads to non-Markovianity in the emission of an atom weakly coupled to it (a process which in absence of disorder is fully Markovian). Here, we extend the above analysis beyond the weak-coupling regime for a finite-band bath so as to account for band edge effects. This paper proposes an original and efficient approach to the moving load problem on Euler-Bernoulli beams, with Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic translational supports and rotational joints, and in addition, equipped with Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic tuned mass dampers (TMDs). While supports are taken as representative of external devices such as grounded dampers or in-span supports with flexibility and damping, the rotational joints may model rotational dampers or connections with flexibility and damping arising from imperfections or damage. The theory of generalised functions is used to treat the discontinuities of the response variables, which involves deriving exact complex eigenvalues and eigenfunctions from a characteristic equation built as determinant of a 4 × 4 matrix. Based on built pertinent orthogonality conditions for the deflection eigenfunctions, a closed-form analytical response is established in the time domain. The proposed solution holds for any number of TMDs and along-axis supports/joints. To show its applicability, accuracy and efficiency, in a numerical application a beam with multiple supports/joints is considered, subjected to a moving concentrated force and a series of concentrated forces, respectively. In this paper we discuss the implementation of 2-qubit quantum state transfer (QST) in inhomogeneous spin chains where the sender and the receiver blocks are coupled through the bulk channel via weak links. The fidelity and the typical timescale of the QST are discussed as a function of the parameters of the weak links. Given the possibility of implementing with cold atoms in optical lattices a variety of condensed matter systems, including spin systems, we also discuss the possible implementation of the discussed 2-qubit QST with cold gases with weak links, together with a discussion of the applications and limitations of the presented results. We investigate the elastic properties of the crust in the Gargano promontory, located in the northern part of the Apulia region (Southeastern Italy). Starting on April, 2013, a local-scale seismic network, composed of 12 short-period (1 Hz) seismic stations, was deployed on the Gargano promontory. Starting on October, 2013, the network was integrated with the recordings of nine seismic stations managed by the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The network recorded more than 1200 seismic events in about 15 months of data acquisition, with more than 700 small magnitude events localized in the Gargano promontory and surrounding areas. A Wadati-modified method allowed us to infer V/V = 1.73 for the area. A subset of about 400 events having a relatively smaller azimuthal gap (<200°) was selected to calibrate a 1D P-wave velocity model of the area, using the VELEST inversion code. The preferred model was obtained from the average of ten velocity models, each of them representing the inversion result from given initial velocity models, calibrated on previous geological and geophysical studies in the area. The results obtained under the assumption that V could decrease with depth are unstable, with very different depths of the top of low-velocity layers. Therefore, the velocity model was obtained from the average of the results obtained under the assumption that V cannot decrease with depth. A strong reduction of both RMS (about 58%) and errors on the location of the events was obtained with respect to the starting model. The final velocity model shows a strong velocity gradient in the upper 5 km of the crust and a small increase (from 6.7 to 7 km) at 30 km of depth. The epicenters of relocated events do not show clear correlations with the surface projection of known seismic faults. A cluster of the epicenters of the relocated events intersects almost perpendicularly the Candelaro fault trace at the surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Very recently, researchers dealing with constitutive law pertinent viscoelastic materials put forward the successful idea to introduce viscoelastic laws embedded with fractional calculus, relating the stress function to a real order derivative of the strain function. The latter consideration leads to represent both, relaxation and creep functions, through a power law function. In literature there are many papers in which the best fitting of the peculiar viscoelastic functions using a fractional model is performed. However there are not present studies about best fitting of relaxation function and/or creep function of materials that exhibit a non-linear viscoelastic behavior, as polymer melts, using a fractional model. In this paper the authors propose an advanced model for capturing the non-linear trend of the shear viscosity of polymer melts as function of the shear rate. Results obtained with the fractional model are compared with those obtained using a classical model which involves classical Maxwell elements. The comparison between experimental data and the theoretical model shows a good agreement, emphasizing that fractional model is proper for studying viscoelasticity, even if the material exhibits a non-linear behavior. This paper concerns the vibration response under moving loads of Euler-Bernoulli uniform beams with translational supports and rotational joints, featuring Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic behaviour. Using the theory of generalized functions to handle the discontinuities of the response variables at the support/joint locations, exact beam modes are obtained from a characteristic equation built as determinant of a $$4\times 4$$ matrix, for any number of supports/joints. Based on pertinent orthogonality conditions for the deflection modes, the response under moving loads is built in the time domain by modal superposition. This paper deals with the response determination of a visco-elastic Timoshenko beam under static loading condition and taking into account fractional calculus. In particular, the fractional derivative terms arise from representing constitutive behavior of the visco-elastic material. Further, taking advantages of the Mellin transform method recently developed for the solution of fractional differential equation, the problem of fractional Timoshenko beam model is assessed in time domain without invoking the Laplace-transforms as usual. Further, solution provided by the Mellin transform procedure will be compared with classical Central Difference scheme one, based on the Grunwald-Letnikov approximation of the fractional derivative. Moreover, Timoshenko beam response is generally evaluated by solving a couple of differential equations. In this paper, expressing the equation of the elastic curve just through a single relation, a more general procedure, which allows the determination of the beam response for any load condition and type of constraints, is developed. In the Umbria-Marche (Central Italy) region an important earthquake sequence occurred in 1997, characterized by nine earthquakes with magnitudes in the range between 5 and 6, that caused important damages and causalities. In the present paper, we separately estimate intrinsic and scatteringQ-1 parameters, using the classical multiple lapse timewindowanalysis (MLTWA) approach in the assumption of a half-space model. The results clearly show that the attenuation parameters Qi-1 and Qs-1 are frequency dependent. This estimate is compared with other attenuation studies carried out in the same area, and with all the other MLTWA estimates obtained till now in other tectonic environments in the Earth. The bias introduced by the half-space assumption is investigated through numerical solutions of the energy transport equation in the more realistic assumption of a heterogeneous crust overlying a transparent mantle, with a Moho located at a depth ranging between 35 and 45 km below the surface. The bias introduced by the half-space assumption is significant only at high frequency. We finally show how the attenuation estimates, calculated with different techniques, lead to different peak ground acceleration decay with distance relationships, using the well-known and well proven Boore's method. This last result indicates that care must be used in selecting the correct estimate of the attenuation parameters for seismic risk purposes. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is well established in such a way that engineers are very confident with the determination of the stress field or deflections of the elastic beam based on this theory. In contrast, Timoshenko theory is not so much used by engineers. However, in some cases, Euler-Bernoulli theory, which neglects the effect of transversal shear deformation, yields unacceptable results. For instance, when dealing with visco-elastic behavior, shear deformations play a fundamental role. Recent studies on the response evaluation of a visco-elastic Euler-Bernoulli beam under quasi-static and dynamic loads have been stressed that for better capturing of the visco-elastic behavior, a fractional constitutive law has to be considered. In this context, it has been provided that if the homogeneous beam correspondence principle also holds, then the study of a fractional visco-elastic Euler-Bernoulli beam may be derived from the elastic one. As mentioned before, when dealing with visco-elasticity the Timoshenko beam model is more appropriate than Euler-Bernoulli's one, and this paper provides important information to engineering designers, introducing exact linking relationships between elastic Euler-Bernoulli beam response and fractional visco-elastic Timoshenko beam response. The coda normalization method is one of the most used methods in the inference of attenuation parameters Qα and Qβ. Since, in this method, the geometrical spreading exponent γ is an unknown model parameter, the most part of studies assumes a fixed γ, generally equal to 1. However γ and Q could be also jointly inferred from the non-linear inversion of coda-normalized logarithms of amplitudes, but the trade-off between γ and Q could give rise to unreasonable values of these parameters. To minimize the trade-off between γ and Q, an inversion method based on a parabolic expression of the coda-normalization equation has been developed. The method has been applied to the waveforms recorded during the 1997 Umbria-Marche seismic crisis. The Akaike criterion has been used to compare results of the parabolic model with those of the linear model, corresponding to γ = 1. A small deviation from the spherical geometrical spreading has been inferred, but this is accompanied by a significant variation of Qα and Qβ values. For almost all the considered stations, Qα smaller than Qβ has been inferred, confirming that seismic attenuation, in the Umbria-Marche region, is controlled by crustal pore fluids. Some of the recent developments concerning the propagation of quantum correlations across spin channels are reviewed. In particular, we focus on the improvement of the transport efficiency obtained by the manipulation of few energy parameters (either end-bond strengths or local magnetic fields) near the sending and receiving sites. Objectives: Endoscopy has become routinely used in middle ear surgery. The aim of this study is to analyze where this tool may complement the traditional microscopic approach. This is a retrospective study done in single tertiary hospital. Methods: We reviewed 342 middle ear/petrous bone surgical procedures performed between 2005 and 2015. Only cases in which both microscopic and endoscope-assisted techniques were used have been included. Sixty-six patients received this double-technique surgery: 51 (77.2%) had middle ear/mastoid and petrous bone cholesteatomas (46 middle ear and mastoid and 5 acquired/congenital petrous bone cholesteatomas), 5 (7.5%) had glomus tympanicum tumors (GTT), 4 (6%) had an ossicular chain dislocation, 3 (4.5%) had purulent chronic otitis media, 2 (3%) had tympanosclerosis, and 1 (1.5%) had an ossicular chain malformation. Results: The endoscope was helpful to remove disease remnants not accessible by microscope in 41 (62%) of the cases; 37 (90%) were cholesteatomas, 3 (7%) were GTT, and only 1 (3%) was an open tympanosclerosis. In the remaining 25 (37.8%) cases, the endoscope was useful only to visualize the cavity since the microscope had already been successful in removing the entire lesion. Conclusions: The endoscopy can add valuable information and support to the usual microscope approach alone. The consensus of a single best technique does not yet exist, but the physician should choose the best modality or combination of modalities in order to cure the patient and prevent any possible complications or recurrence of the pathology. A two-step technique has been developed with the aim of retrieving the fault plane orientation of a small-magnitude earthquake. The technique uses a set of non-linear equations, which relate the rise times of first P waves to source parameters (source dimension L, dip δ and strike φ of the fault) and intrinsic . At the first step of the technique, the inversion of P polarities provides two fault plane orientations for each focal mechanism solution. At the second step, the inversion of rise times is carried out to retrieve L and by fixing δ and φ to the values of the fault plane orientation inferred at the first step. A robust analysis, based on the random deviates technique, allows us to evaluate if one fault plane exists which systematically better fits data and can be considered the ‘true’ fault plane. A parameter is introduced to quantify the level of resolution of the ‘true’ fault plane. A probabilistic approach, based on the assumption that errors on data are Gaussian distributed, allows us to a posteriori validate or reject the ‘true’ fault plane. The technique has been applied to 47 small earthquakes occurred below the town of Sellano, during the 1997 Umbria-Marche (Central Italy) seismic crisis. The strike of the inferred fault planes is generally along the Apennine direction. Fault plane solutions can be mainly subdivided into two groups: a first group of SW-dipping faults and a second group of NE-dipping faults. We propose a method to estimate the radius, dip and strike of a circular seismic rupture through the inversion of first P- and S-wave pulse widths measured on microearthquake records. The method is based on quite general, numerically calibrated relationships relating source and Q parameters under the assumption that the waves are radiated by a circular crack propagating at a constant rupture velocity. To study the influence of both the source and receiver configuration and the properties of seismic rupture, a detailed resolution study on synthetic data has been carried out. For a microearthquake rupture, the pulse width variations with azimuths depend critically on the fault plane orientation and the resolution on fault angle parameters can be qualitatively assessed by the parameter η, defined as the relative variation of the take-off angles with respect to their average value. A statistical approach based on mapping random deviations on data in the parameter space has been adopted to quantify the uncertainty affecting the fault plane estimates. The method is applied to estimate the source parameters of an event recorded during the 1997 Umbria-Marche earthquake sequence. For the considered event, the fault plane solution is in good agreement with the δ–φ estimates obtained by the method of the joint inversion of P polarities and S polarizations. Short period surface waves, recorded during a seismic refractionsurvey in the Sannio region (Southern Italy), have been modeled to infera shallow velocity model for the area. Based on the decrease of resolutionwith depth, due to the bias on group velocity estimates arising frominterference of the Rayleigh waves with higher modes, we carried out aprocedure of fitting, with synthetic seismograms, of selected filtered traceswith a gaussian filter, having a width at half height equal to 1 Hz and acentral frequency lying in the range [1,4] Hz. We estimated the likelihoodbetween synthetic and observed seismograms by measuring their semblance.In this way we were able to infer a more refined local velocity modelcharacterized by a high Vp and Vs vertical gradient in the sedimentarycover. Two ad hoc resolution studies, based on group velocity andamplitude data respectively, indicate that the local velocity model is a goodvelocity model also for the entire studied area. The increase in the numberof available data when using amplitude information allows us to make amore selective choice in the model parameter space (Vp and Vs of eachlayer) and to solve for the Vp/Vs ratio. The inferred Vp velocity in thehalf-space is equal to 2.8 km/s. This value is in excellent agreement withthat inferred by other authors (3 km/s) by modeling P-wave travel timevs. distance. The best-fit model furnish low Vp/Vs for the sedimentarycover so indicating a high degree of the sediment's compaction in thestudied area. Intermittent claudication impairs functional status and quality of life in many patients by limiting walking capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 4-week treatment with prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), a drug inducing vasodilation and inhibiting platelet aggregation, on improving functional status and health-related quality of life in patients with disabling intermittent claudication. Forty-two untrained outpatients (37 men and five women, mean age 64 ± 8 years) with intermittent claudication,and maximum walking distance (MWD) of at least 50 and no more than 200 m on treadmill test (5% slope, 3 km/hr) were randomized to 4 weeks of double-blind treatment either with 60 mcg PGE1 daily given IV in 250 mL saline over a period of 2 hours (21 patients) or placebo (250 mL saline, 21 patients). Treatment-free follow-up was completed 8 weeks after the final infusion. Pain free walking distance (PFWD), MWD, and questionnaire evaluation were determined at baseline, after the 4-week treatment period, and at the end of the 8 weeks of the treatment-free follow-up period. After 4 weeks of treatment with PGE1 PFWD and MWD increased from 72 ± 16 m to 135 ± 33 m (+87%, p<0.001) and from 140 ± 30 m to 266 ± 62 m (+90%, p<0.001), respectively. Analysis of the Walking Impairment Questionnaire responses in the PGE1 group at 4 weeks demonstrated significant improvements in the walking impairment score (+19 percentage points, p<0.001), in the distance score (+25 percentage points, p<0.001), in the speed score (+24 percentage points, p<0.001), in the stair climbing score (+20 percentage points, p<0.001). The RAND survey responses showed improvements in physical function and bodily pain scores (+14 percentage points, p<0.001, and +15 percentage points, p<0.01, respectively). After the treatment-free follow-up period of 8 weeks, increases in PFWD and MWD were maintained (113 ±26 m, +57%, p<0.001, and 229 ±55 m, +63%, p<0.001, respectively). Similarly, at the end of the treatment-free follow-up, the walking impairment score (+16 percentage points, p<0.001), the distance score (+23 percentage points, p<0.001), the speed score (+22 percentage points, p<0.001), the stair climbing score (+18 percentage points, p<0.001) as well as the RAND physical function and bodily pain scores (+10 percentage points, p<0.001, and +13 percentage points, p<0.01, respectively) were still increased compared with baseline. No change from baseline was found in all the target parameters in the placebo group after 4 weeks of treatment and at the end of the treatment-free follow-up period. These data show that a 4-week treatment with PGE1 improves functional status and quality of life as well as treadmill performance in patients with disabling intermittent claudication as compared with placebo-treated patients. The improvements are also maintained for a period of 8 weeks beyond the end of the treatment. To assess endothelin-1 (ET-1) response to cold stimulation in essential acrocyanosis (EA), the authors measured ET-1 plasma concentrations in 6 patients with EA (6 women, age range seventeen to thirty-seven years) and in 6 controls (5 women, 1 man, age range twenty-one to thirty-seven years) before and after cold challenge by unilateral hand immersion in water bath at 13°C for five minutes. The contralateral upper limb was considered as control. Blood samples were simultaneously drawn from an antecubital vein in the cooled side and in the contralateral upper limb at baseline, at the end of cooling, and at ten and ninety minutes after cooling was begun. Plasma ET-1 was determined by a radioimmunoassay system. Results are mean ±SD. Baseline ET-1 was higher in patients with EA (5.1 ± 0.3 pmol/L) than in controls (1.9 ± 0.1 pmol/L, P < 0.001). After hand cooling, ET-1 in the cold-exposed upper limb rose in patients with EA to a peak value of 7.2 ± 0.7 pmol/L, which was greater than that observed in healthy subjects (2.7 ± 0.4 pmol/L, P < 0.001). The absolute increase in ET-1 plasma concentrations from baseline to peak value was significantly higher in patients with EA than in controls (2.1 ± 0.3 vs 0.8 ± 0.2 pmol/L, respectively, P < 0.001). In patients with EA, but not in controls, the rise in ET-1 plasma concentrations was still detected ninety minutes after cooling. The same time course of the plasma ET-1 concentrations was observed in the noncooled upper limb, but the increases in ET-1 at different times after cold stimulus were smaller than in the cold-challenged upper limb in both groups (P < 0.001). In conclusion, the results demonstrate that in patients with EA, baseline plasma levels of ET-1 are enhanced and are further increased by cooling until ninety minutes after cold challenge. This rise in plasma ET-1 could contribute to potentiating and prolonging cold-induced vasoconstriction/ vasospasm and/or could be a marker for endothelial damage in EA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to investigate the release of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in normal and varicose saphenous veins at baseline and after venous stasis test. Ten patients (eight women and two men, mean age 43 ±4) with primarily varicose great saphenous veins and ten controls (eight women and two men, mean age 42 ±6) were recruited. After 30 minutes of resting in supine position, venous occlusion in a leg was performed with a sphygmomanometer provided to keep the pressure in the cuff intermediate between systolic and diastolic blood pressure for 10 minutes. Blood samples were taken from the great saphenous vein just above the medial malleolus at baseline and 10 minutes after venous stasis was begun. Plasma ET-1 was determined by a radioimmunoassay system. Results are expressed as mean ±SD. Plasma ET-1 concentration was higher in varicose than in normal saphenous veins (4 ±0.1 pmol/L vs 2.6 ±0.1 pmol/L, P<0.001), and it significantly increased (P<0.001) in both groups after venous stasis when compared with baseline (6.8 ±0.9 pmol/L and 3.6 ±0.1 pmol/L in varicose and normal saphenous veins, respectively). Absolute increase in plasma ET-1 was significantly greater in varicose than in normal saphenous veins (2.8 ±0.9 pmol/L vs 1.0 ±0.2 pmol/L, P<0.01). In conclusion, increased local ET-1 release in varicose saphenous veins could be a marker for venous endothelial activation/damage and/or contribute to promote the morphologic alterations of the varicose vein wall by stimulating smooth muscle cell proliferation. On the other hand, increased ET-1 release could contribute to counterbalancing the varicose venous relaxation and to increasing preload in varicose patients via ET-1-induced venoconstriction. (1) Background: Circulating micro-RNAs (miRNAs) modulate the expression of molecules in diabetes. We evaluated the expression of serum miRNA-195-5p and -451a in diabetic patients with ischemic stroke and correlated them with two markers of brain tissue integrity. (2) Methods: Seventy-eight subjects with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA) (40 with diabetes) were enrolled. Serum miRNA levels, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) were assessed at admission and 24 and 72 h after a post-ischemic stroke, and were compared to 20 controls. (3) Results: Both circulating miRNAs were two-fold up-regulated in diabetic AIS and TIA patients compared to non-diabetics. Their levels progressively decreased at 24 and 72 h in both AIS and TIA patients. Interestingly, in the non-diabetic TIA group, both circulating miRNAs, although higher than the controls, tended to achieve a complete decay after 72 h. Furthermore, miRNA-195-5p and miRNA-451a levels inversely correlated with both BDNF and VEGF-A serum levels. (4) Conclusions: These data show a different profile of both micro-RNAs in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients after acute ischemic stroke, suggesting their pivotal role in cerebrovascular ischemic attack. Under the Born–Markov approximation, a qubit system, such as a two-level atom, is known to undergo a memoryless decay of quantum coherence or excitation when weakly coupled to a featureless environment. Recently, it has been shown that unavoidable disorder in the environment is responsible for non-Markovian effects and information backflow from the environment into the system owing to Anderson localization. This turns disorder into a resource for enhancing non-Markovianity in the system–environment dynamics, which could be of relevance in cavity quantum electrodynamics. Here we consider the decoherence dynamics of a qubit weakly coupled to a two-dimensional bath with a nontrivial topological phase, such as a two-level atom embedded in a two-dimensional coupled-cavity array with a synthetic gauge field realizing a quantum-Hall bath, and show that Markovianity is protected against moderate disorder owing to the robustness of chiral edge modes in the quantum-Hall bath. Interestingly, switching off the gauge field, i.e., flipping the bath into a topological trivial phase, allows one to re-introduce non-Markovian effects. Such a result indicates that changing the topological phase of a bath by a tunable synthetic gauge field can be harnessed to control non-Markovian effects and quantum information backflow in a qubit-environment system. As discovered by P. W. Anderson, excitations do not propagate freely in a disordered lattice, but, due to destructive interference, they localise. As a consequence, when an atom interacts with a disordered lattice, one indeed observes a non-trivial excitation exchange between atom and lattice. Such non-trivial atomic dynamics will in general be characterised also by a non-trivial quantum information backflow, a clear signature of non-Markovian dynamics. To investigate the above scenario, we consider a quantum emitter, or atom, weakly coupled to a uniform coupled-cavity array (CCA). If initially excited, in the absence of disorder, the emitter undergoes a Markovian spontaneous emission by releasing all its excitation into the CCA (initially in its vacuum state). By introducing static disorder in the CCA the field normal modes become Anderson-localized, giving rise to a non-Markovian atomic dynamics. We show the existence of a functional relationship between a rigorous measure of quantum non-Markovianity and the CCA localization. We furthermore show that the average non-Markovianity of the atomic dynamics is well-described by a phenomenological model in which the atom is coupled, at the same time, to a single mode and to a standard - Markovian - dissipative bath.
