Motivation It is difficult to generate new molecules with desirable bioactivity through ligand-based de novo drug design, and receptor-based de novo drug design is constrained by disease target information availability. The combination of artificial intelligence and phenotype-based de novo drug design can generate new bioactive molecules, independent from disease target information. Gene expression profiles can be used to characterize biological phenotypes. The Transformer model can be utilized to capture the associations between gene expression profiles and molecular structures due to its remarkable ability in processing contextual information. Results We propose TransGEM (Transformer-based model from gene expression to molecules), which is a phenotype-based de novo drug design model. A specialized gene expression encoder is used to embed gene expression difference values between diseased cell lines and their corresponding normal tissue cells into TransGEM model. The results demonstrate that the TransGEM model can generate molecules with desirable evaluation metrics and property distributions. Case studies illustrate that TransGEM model can generate structurally novel molecules with good binding affinity to disease target proteins. The majority of genes with high attention scores obtained from TransGEM model are associated with the onset of the disease, indicating the potential of these genes as disease targets. Therefore, this study provides a new paradigm for de novo drug design, and it will promote phenotype-based drug discovery. The polar oceans play a vital role in regulating atmospheric CO2 concentrations (pCO2) during the Pleistocene glacial cycles. However, despite being the largest modern reservoir of respired carbon, the impact of the subarctic Pacific remains poorly understood due to limited records. Here, we present high-resolution, 230Th-normalized export productivity records from the subarctic northwestern Pacific covering the last five glacial cycles. Our records display pronounced, glacial-interglacial cyclicity superimposed with precessional-driven variability, with warm interglacial climate and high boreal summer insolation providing favorable conditions to sustain upwelling of nutrient-rich subsurface waters and hence increased export productivity. Our transient model simulations consistently show that ice sheets and to a lesser degree, precession are the main drivers that control the strength and latitudinal position of the westerlies. Enhanced upwelling of nutrient/carbon-rich water caused by the intensification and poleward migration of the northern westerlies during warmer climate intervals would have led to the release of previously sequestered CO2 from the subarctic Pacific to the atmosphere. Our results also highlight the significant role of the subarctic Pacific in modulating pCO2 changes during the Pleistocene climate cycles, especially on precession timescale (~ 20 kyr). Ice sheets and precession are shown to control westerly strength and position, impacting nutrient-rich water upwelling and productivity in the subarctic Pacific. Xianxian geothermal exploitation area is one of the areas with the best occurrence conditions of geothermal resource in North China, rich in medium and low temperature geothermal resource, and is a typical carbonate geothermal field. However, its hydrogeochemical evolution process is not clear, and no complete conceptual model of geothermal genesis has been established to guide the exploration, development and utilization of geothermal resource in the area. It restricts the sustainable development of regional geothermal resource and the realization of carbon emission reduction targets. In this study, geothermal fluids in the area were collected for testing and analysis in terms of hydrochemical characteristics and stable isotopes. Based on systematic geochemical research, the formation mechanism of geothermal fluids was analyzed, and a conceptual model of geothermal genetic in the study area was established. The main understanding is as follows: the hydrochemical type of geothermal water in the study area is Cl-Na type, and the water-rock interaction is not balanced. The formation of geothermal water in the area is affected by the infiltration of atmospheric precipitation, and it is terrestrial leached water. The flow path of geothermal water is long, the water circulation is slow, and the metamorphism is deep. Dolomite, calcite and gypsum dissolution are the main sources of Mg2+, Ca2+, , and in geothermal water, besides, other minerals containing calcium and magnesium are also part of their sources. The source of geothermal water recharge is atmospheric precipitation, and the recharge elevation of geothermal water is about 619–1069 m. Airborne mineral dust is sensitive to climatic changes, but its response to orbital forcing is still not fully understood. Here, we present a reconstruction of dust input to the Subarctic Pacific Ocean covering the past 190 kyr. The dust composition record is indicative of source moisture conditions, which were dominated by precessional variations. In contrast, the dust flux record is dominated by obliquity variations and displays an out‐of‐phase relationship with a dust record from the mid‐latitude North Pacific Ocean. Climate model simulations suggest precession likely drove changes in the aridity and extent of dust source regions. Additionally, the obliquity variations in dust flux can be explained by meridional shifts in the North Pacific westerly jet, driven by changes in the meridional atmospheric temperature gradient. Overall, our findings suggest that North Pacific dust input was primarily modulated by orbital‐controlled source aridity and the strength and position of the westerly winds. Plain Language Summary: Glacial‐interglacial climate variations can affect dust transport to the ocean, but the controls on past dust fluxes to the North Pacific Ocean remain poorly constrained. This region is important because fertilization of phytoplankton growth by dust‐borne iron may have contributed to lower glacial atmospheric CO2, and dust records could also constrain the past dynamics of the North Pacific westerly winds. Here, we highlight the dominance of obliquity cycles in modulating latitudinal shifts of the westerly winds and, in turn, dust inputs. Such orbital‐scale fluctuations in the dust flux could influence ocean‐atmosphere interactions in the middle and high northern latitudes, with implications for global atmospheric circulation and ocean carbon storage. As a new data management paradigm, knowledge graphs can integrate multiple data sources and achieve quick responses, reasoning and better predictions in drug discovery. Characterized by powerful contagion and a high rate of morbidity and mortality, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a common infectious disease in the global swine industry that causes economically great losses. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has advantages in low adverse effects and a relatively affordable cost of application, and TCM is therefore conceived as a possibility to treat PRRS under the current circumstance that there is a lack of safe and effective approaches. Here, we constructed a knowledge graph containing common biomedical data from humans and Sus Scrofa as well as information from thousands of TCMs. Subsequently, we validated the effectiveness of the Sus Scrofa knowledge graph by the t-SNE algorithm and selected the optimal model (i.e., transR) from six typical models, namely, transE, transR, DistMult, ComplEx, RESCAL and RotatE, according to five indicators, namely, MRR, MR, HITS@1, HITS@3 and HITS@10. Based on embedding vectors trained by the optimal model, anti-PRRSV TCMs were predicted by two paths, namely, VHC-Herb and VHPC-Herb, and potential anti-PRRSV TCMs were identified by retrieving the HERB database according to the pharmacological properties corresponding to symptoms of PRRS. Ultimately, Dan Shen's (Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge) capacity to resist PRRSV infection was validated by a cell experiment in which the inhibition rate of PRRSV exceeded 90% when the concentrations of Dan Shen extract were 0.004, 0.008, 0.016 and 0.032 mg/mL. In summary, this is the first report on the Sus Scrofa knowledge graph including TCM information, and our study reflects the important application values of deep learning on graphs in the swine industry as well as providing accessible TCM resources for PRRS. The presence of a late Quaternary ice sheet/ice shelf over the East Siberian Sea has been proposed in several papers. Here, we further document its duration/resilience based on the sedimentary, bulk mineralogical, and geochemical (organic matter content and its stable isotopic composition, U‐Th series) properties of a core raised from the southernmost Mendeleev Ridge. The chronostratigraphy of the studied core was mainly built from the 230Th excess (230Thxs) distribution and decay downcore. At the core‐top, peaking 230Thxs values during the early MIS 3 and mid‐MIS 1 encompassing an MIS 2 hiatus were observed. As documented in several papers, these peaks suggest seasonally open ice conditions over proximal continental shelves. Below, the interval spanning MIS 4 and possibly MIS 5d records major ice‐rafting events illustrated by overall high coarse‐fraction contents. Underlying MIS 5e, down to MIS 11, the sediment depicts relatively low sand (1.7±2.5 dw%), high clay (33.5±4.7 dw%), and very low organic carbon (0.10±0.06 dw%) contents, and low δ13Corg values (−24.3±0.9‰). This section is interpreted as recording fine sediment transport by deep currents and/or meltwater plumes below a resilient ice cover, only interrupted by a few short‐duration events. These events include (i) detrital carbonate pulses assigned to deglacial events along the NW Laurentide Ice Sheet margin (Termination (T) III), and (ii) intervals with some planktonic foraminifer occurrences, likely relating to their advection from open areas of the Arctic Ocean (MIS 5e, 9 and 11). All Terminations, but TII and the early MIS 3, show peaking Mn/Al values linked to the submergence of Arctic shelves under a rising sea level. We conclude that the resilient ice cover, likely an ice shelf, has been present over the southern Mendeleev Ridge during most of the interval after the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition and was favoured by the low summer insolation of the MIS 14 to 10 interval. Dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are the key dermal component of the hair follicle that directly regulates hair follicle development, growth and regeneration. Successfully isolated and cultured DPCs from Small-tail Han sheep could provide a good model for the study of hair follicle development mechanism in vitro. DPCs were isolated using enzyme digestion and dissecting microscope from Small-tail Han sheep. Adherent cells were identified by cell characteristics, particular gene expression, differentiation capability to adipocyte and osteoblast using specific differentiation mediums. Additionally, flow cytometry was used to detect the cell cycle of DPCs. Cells originating from the dermal papilla showed the morphological appearance of mesenchymal cells (fibroblast-like cells). Purified DPCs were positive for α-SMA (α smooth muscle actin) and vimentin; in addition to their strong proliferation abilities in vitro, these DPCs can be differentiated into adipocyte and osteoblasts lineage under appropriate culture condition. DPCs were successfully isolated and subcultured from Small-tail Han sheep, which exhibited progenitor cell features and multiple differentiation potency. Deep geothermal reservoirs have great potential for exploitation and are characterized by high temperatures, high stress, and strong heterogeneity. However, these reservoirs contain widely and continuously distributed dominant flow channels with high permeability, predisposing these reservoirs to the formation of dominant flow, which notably decreases the efficiency of heat extraction. Focusing on the dominant flow in fractures, this study provides a definite concept, systematically reviews current studies, and puts forward suggestions for future research. The conglomeratic reservoirs of the Permian Wutonggou Formation in the Yingyeer area of the Turpan–Hami Basin are key petroliferous horizons, with enormous potential for hydrocarbon exploration. Existing studies on the conglomeratic reservoirs in this area mainly focus on the sedimentary environment and sand body distribution, while few of them concern the diagenesis and evolution of the conglomeratic reservoirs, leading to deficient knowledge about relevant mechanisms. By comprehensively utilizing the data from ordinary and casting thin section identification, the x-ray diffraction analysis of whole rock and clay, scanning electron microscopy, and other analyses and assays, this study analyzed and investigated the petrological characteristics, diagenetic types, and characteristics, and diagenetic evolutionary stages and mechanisms of the conglomeratic reservoirs of the Permian Wutonggou Formation in the Yingyeer area. The study results are as follows. Under the influence of sedimentary provenances, tectonic evolution, and paleogeomorphology, the conglomeratic reservoirs of the Permian Wutonggou formation have low clastic grain maturity and low structural maturity, suggesting proximal provenances. The reservoirs are subjected to various diagenesis, including carbonate cementation, which fills pores and throats; compaction as a major factor leading to poor reservoir quality, and dissolution, which significantly improves the reservoir properties. The conglomeratic reservoirs in the Wutonggou formation are generally in substage A of the middle diagenetic stage. The diagenetic evolution of the reservoirs generally underwent early mechanical compaction, calcite precipitation, secondary quartz overgrowth, the injection of organic fluids, the dissolution of feldspars and lithic grains, the transformation of clay minerals, and calcite cementation in sequence. Based on the data of the sound speed and the physical–mechanical properties of 300 seafloor sediment samples collected in the middle area of the Southern Yellow Sea, a backpropagation (BP) neural network algorithm is used herein to study the neural network topology and the corresponding neuron characteristic factors. A neural network model for predicting the sound speed of the seafloor sediment based on density, water content, porosity, void ratio, liquid limit, plastic limit, and clay content in the middle area of the Southern Yellow Sea is established. The results show that the sound speed prediction accuracy is the highest when the network model contains seven input layer neurons, ten hidden layer neurons, and one output node. According to the prediction results, the MAE(Mean Absolute Error) and the MAPE(Mean Absolute Percentage Error) are 13.19 m s−1 and 0.85%, respectively. The prediction results illustrate that the established BP neural network prediction method for the seafloor sediment sound speed is better than the traditional single, two and multi-parameter prediction equations. Interest in the study of microplanktonic organisms in the Arctic has increased owing to their direct participation in the process of sedimentation and sensitive response to changes in environmental and climatic factors. This study presents new data on the taxonomic diversity and content of radiolarian skeletons and agglutinated tintinnid ciliate loricae in the Upper Holocene sediments of the Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, and the adjacent part of the Arctic Ocean. We traced the spatial distribution of representative microfauna of these groups in surface sediments and sediment cores. Radiolarian skeletons were found in the surface sediments of the continental slope of the Laptev Sea and adjacent parts of the Arctic Ocean. These belong to the following six species: Stylatractus (?) sp., Actinomma leptoderma leptoderma, Actinomma leptoderma longispina, Streblacantha circumtexta, Spongotrochus glacialis, and Cycladophora davisiana. The radiolarian fauna detected was in deep sea and close to the fauna of the Nansen Basin (Central Arctic). Furthermore, we found tintinnid ciliate loricae belonging to the following seven species: Tintinnopsis ventricosoides, Tintinnopsis fimbriata, Tintinnopsis turbo, Tintinnopsis nitida, Tintinnopsis sp. cf. fusus (?), Tintinnopsis sp., and Stenosemella nivalis. In the study area, the tintinnid ciliate loricae of these species were discovered for the first time and traced mainly in the coastal shelf zone, which can be explained by their ecology. The only exception is that of T. nitida, which was found only on the continental slope of the Laptev Sea. Our findings advance knowledge on the biodiversity of Arctic seas and can be used to monitor ecological and paleoceanographic changes in the Arctic region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our research was motivated by significant warming in the Arctic in recent decades and the influence of this warming on diatoms, which are the main producers in the seas of the Eastern Arctic. For this purpose, we studied the qualitative concentrations and quantitative ratio of diatoms from the surface sediments of the Laptev Sea (LS), the East Siberian (ESS) and Chukchi seas (ChS), and the Arctic Ocean (AO), obtained by box corers in 2016 and 2018. The ecological structure of the diatom assemblages of these sediments, reflecting the current environmental conditions, was also analyzed. Compared with the end of the last century, there were significant changes in species composition and quantitative ratio of the diatom assemblages in the sediments from the AO and the LS and ESS. In contrast, the diatom assemblages in the sediments from the ChS had not significantly changed in terms of species composition or quantitative ratio over the same three decades. The observed transformations in the diatom assemblages of the surface sediments were associated with substantial changes in water temperature, current flow, salinity, ice melting, and prolonged ice-free periods associated with global warming in the Northern Hemisphere in recent decades. The Mangkang geothermal field, distributed in the Mediterranean–Himalayas geothermal belt, hosts abundant hot springs whose geneses remain unclear. To determine the hydrochemical characteristics, reservoir temperature, circulation and recharge depths, and water–rock interactions of the geothermal water in the geothermal field, this study analyzed hydrochemical compositions and isotopes (2H, 3H, and 18O), conducted a PHREEQC simulation, and established a conceptual model to illustrate the genesis of geothermal resources in the Mangkang field. Based on the study of hot springs in Meipu, Qvzika, and Zulongpu villages and Rumei town, the following results are reported: The orifice temperatures of these hot springs vary between 18 °C and 67.5 °C. The hydrochemical composition analysis results indicate that the geothermal water in the hot springs is of hydrochemical type HCO3-Ca·Mg. Moreover, the geothermal water has high HBO2 and Na+ concentrations, suggesting protracted water runoff and strong water–rock interactions during its evolution. According to the mineral–water solubility equilibrium and silica geothermometers, it is estimated that the reservoir temperature of the Zulongpu hot spring is 47 °C and other hot springs have much higher reservoir temperatures of 116–130 °C. As indicated by geothermal gradients, annual temperatures, and reservoir temperatures, the geothermal water in Meipu and Qvzika villages has the greatest circulation depth, up to 3600–4300 m, followed by that in Rumei town (3700–4000 m) and Zulongpu village (~1500 m). The 2H-18O isotopic analysis of the geothermal surface water revealed that the geothermal water originates from meteoric water. The recharge elevation was inferred to be ~4700–4900 m. Moreover, the low 3H values (<1 Tu) suggest that the geothermal water is older than 40 years. The PHREEQC inverse simulation results indicated that the variation in the hydrochemical composition of the geothermal water results from the precipitation of chalcedony and dolomite, the absorption of NaX, and the loss of CaX2 during migration and storage. Based on merged custom import and export data and Chinese industrial enterprise data, this paper studies the influence of economic agglomeration incurred by urbanization in China on the products' quality upgrading. We find that economic agglomeration can improve the product quality of Chinese enterprises. We further show that in the context of deepening trade liberalization, economic agglomeration leads enterprises to import more various intermediate products, thus helping to upgrade the quality of final products. The increase in the proportion of intermediate products imported from high-income countries will strengthen the role of economic agglomeration in upgrading the quality of products. Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are the two most important greenhouse gases (GHGs). To examine the variation characteristics of Ch4 and CO2 in the coastal South China Sea, atmospheric CH4 and CO2 measurements were performed in Bohe (BH), Guangdong, China, in summer 2021. By using an adaptive data analysis method, the diurnal patterns of CH4 and CO2 were clearly extracted and analysed in relation to the sea breeze (SB) and land breeze (LB), respectively. The average concentrations of CH4 and CO2 were 1876.91 ± 31.13 ppb and 407.99 ± 4.24 ppm during SB, and 1988.12 ± 109.92 ppb and 421.54 ± 14.89 ppm during LB, respectively. The values of CH4 and CO2 during SB basically coincided with the values and trends of marine background sites, showing that the BH station could serve as an ideal site for background GHG monitoring and dynamic analysis. The extracted diurnal variations in CH4 and CO2 showed sunrise high and sunset low patterns (with peaks at 5:00–7:00) during LB but mid-morning high and evening low patterns (with peaks at 9:00) during SB. The diurnal amplitude changes in both CH4 and CO2 during LB were almost two to three times those during SB. Wind direction significantly modulated the diurnal variations in CH4 and CO2. The results in this study provide a new way to examine the variations in GHGs on different timescales and can also help us gain a better understanding of GHG sources and distributions in the South China Sea. The anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) is an important magnetic parameter for quantifying the concentration of "fine", mostly sub‐micron ferrimagnetic particles in rocks and sediments. A sound understanding of ARM carriers is needed to interpret magnetic and environmental information in sedimentary archives. This is often not achieved for marine sediments, which routinely contain several magnetic mineral components. Here, we analyze marine sediment records over different timescales for four sediment cores from the Eastern Pacific Ocean (Hole 1218A), the Antarctic margin (core P4‐1), the Arctic Ocean (core ARC5‐ICE4), and the South China Sea (core L07), using coercivity spectra analyses of ARM, first‐order reversal curve principal component analysis (FORC‐PCA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and unmixing of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) curves. By combining rock magnetic and TEM results, we find that the ARM is mainly carried by non‐interacting single domain (SD) biogenic magnetite (magnetofossils) in the studied sediments over all timescales. Low‐coercivity magnetic particles (detrital and fine‐grained extracellular magnetite) also contribute to the bulk ARM. Variable magnetofossil chain structures are detected and have a significant influence on ARM data interpretation. Quantitative FORC‐PCA endmember analyses based on quantile contours and coercivity distributions provide valuable information on the nature of endmembers and improve ARM data interpretation. We provide an integrated strategy to help reduce interpretational ambiguities related to ARM in future studies. Here, we analyze marine sediment records from the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the Antarctic margin, the Arctic Ocean, and the South China Sea to identify the carriers of ARM in the respective sediments. Our results indicate that all of the sediments contain abundant remains of magnetotactic bacteria (known as magnetofossils). Magnetofossil abundance variations dominate ARM on both 10,000 to million‐year timescales. Part of the bulk ARM is also contributed by other low‐coercivity magnetite particles. Furthermore, ARM is influenced significantly by magnetofossil chain structure variations. Our results have important implications for future studies involving use of ARM in magnetofossil‐rich sediments. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) poses a mortal threat to human health. The elucidation of the relationship between peripheral immune cells and the development of inflammation is essential for revealing the pathogenic mechanism of COVID-19 and developing related antiviral drugs. The immune cell metabolism-targeting therapies exhibit a desirable anti-inflammatory effect in some treatment cases. In this study, based on differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis, a genome-scale metabolic model (GSMM) was reconstructed by integrating transcriptome data to characterize the adaptive metabolic changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in severe COVID-19 patients. Differential flux analysis revealed that metabolic changes such as enhanced aerobic glycolysis, impaired oxidative phosphorylation, fluctuating biogenesis of lipids, vitamins (folate and retinol), and nucleotides played important roles in the inflammation adaptation of PBMCs. Moreover, the main metabolic enzymes such as the solute carrier (SLC) family 2 member 3 (SLC2A3) and fatty acid synthase (FASN), responsible for the reactions with large differential fluxes, were identified as potential therapeutic targets. Our results revealed the inflammation regulation potentials of partial metabolic reactions with differential fluxes and their metabolites. The precise exploration of the characteristics of geothermal fields in sedimentary basins, such as the temperature and burial depth of their deep geothermal reservoirs, is of great significance for improving the probability of penetration and reducing exploration risks and development costs. This study proposed a joint exploration method combining magnetotelluric (MT) sounding and geothermometers. Using this method, this study estimated the geothermal reservoirs' temperature and the circulation depth of geothermal water in the Xianxian geothermal field, a typical geothermal field in a large sedimentary basin in northern China, and prepared the temperature and depth maps of the geothermal reservoirs. The main results are as follows. First, the bedrock's geothermal reservoirs with karst fissures in the Xianxian geothermal field have great potential for development. Among them, geothermal reservoirs in the Jixianian Wumishan formation have a top depth of 1100–1500 m and a thickness of 700–1700 m, and the geothermal reservoirs in the Jixianian Gaoyuzhuang formation have a top depth of 3700–4000 m and a maximum drilled thickness of 400 m. Geothermal resources exist in complex and comprehensive geological settings. In the current study, we proposed a CPU/GPU collaborative parallel prestack time migration methodology for geothermal resource exploration. First, seismic geological conditions in Xian County were obtained based on an analysis of drill cores for further seismic evaluation. Then, combined with the analysis of two‐dimensional seismic data in the adjacent area, a test section with three seismic survey lines were designed to explore the geological structure of the study area. In the study area, the seismic data were derived through the multiple coverage reflection wave exploration method with explosive ignition in deep wells and high coverage frequency observations. Finally, we employed CPU/GPU collaborative parallel prestack time migration technology to analyze the obtained seismic data for geothermal resource evaluation. The favorable areas of karst fissure heat storage in Middle–Upper Proterozoic Jixianian and Paleozoic Cambrian–Ordovician rocks were inferred together with two preferred recommended exploration holes. The Yap trench‐island arc system, where three tectonic plates (i.e., the Philippine Sea Plate, Pacific Plate, and Caroline Plate) interact, has undergone a relatively complicated geological evolution. East of the system, the Caroline Plateau are being subducted, and the plateau has been rifted into east and west Caroline ridges by the development of the Sorol Trough. However, until now, knowledge of the nature of the basement of the Sorol Trough is lacking, which limits our understanding of the complete tectonic evolution of the Yap island arc‐trench system and the Caroline Plateau. In this study, we performed petrological and mineral geochemical (in situ major element compositions and trace element compositions) analysis of newly acquired subducting basalt samples from the Sorol Trough segment, which is being subducted along the Yap Trench, and K‐Ar age of the Sorol basalts is 23.8 ± 0.7 Ma. The results show that phenocryst minerals of basalt from Sorol Trough are mainly olivine and plagioclase, with minor clinopyroxene microlites. The forsterite (Fo) values of the olivine phenocrysts in these rocks vary from 84.97 to 86.85, and plagioclase (Pl) phenocrysts are predominantly labradorite, with a few andesine plagioclase microlites. Bulk‐rock chemical compositions confirm that these rocks are intraplate alkaline basalts and show ocean island basalt (OIB)‐like geochemical characteristics. The mantle source of these basement basalts could be peridotite, and these Sorol Trough basalts may have been formed by 5–10% partial melting of mantle spinel lherzolite. The potential temperature of the mantle beneath the Sorol Trough was inferred to be 1,331–1,393°C, shows that there is no thermal anomaly in the mantle source. In addition, the crystallization temperatures of the clinopyroxenes (1,068–1,263°C) and plagioclase (702–1,216°C) and their compositional characteristics indicate that the magmatic processes have a conspicuously fast rate of magma upwelling. In conclusion, the basalts in the Sorol Trough were the products of low‐degree partial melting of a relatively enriched mantle source that passively upwelled as the Sorol Trough separated the Caroline Ridge into its western and eastern parts. Based on the acoustic and physical data of typical seafloor sediment samples collected in the East China Sea, this study on the super parameter selection and contribution of the characteristic factors of the machine learning model for predicting the sound speed of seafloor sediments was conducted using the eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm. An XGBoost model for predicting the sound speed of seafloor sediments was established based on five physical parameters: density (ρ), water content (w), void ratio (e), sand content (S), and average grain size (Mz). The results demonstrated that the model had the highest accuracy when n_estimator was 75 and max_depth was 5. The model training goodness of fit (R2) was as high as 0.92, and the mean absolute error and mean absolute percent error of the model prediction were 7.99 m/s and 0.51%, respectively. The results demonstrated that, in the study area, the XGBoost prediction method for the sound speed of seafloor sediments was superior to the traditional single- and two-parameter regressional equation prediction methods, with higher prediction accuracy, thus providing a new approach to predict the sound speed of seafloor sediments. Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral), the dominant planktonic foraminiferal species in the mid-to-high latitude oceans, represents a major component of local calcium carbonate (CaCO3) production. However, the predominant factors, governing the calcification of this species and its potential response to the future marine environmental changes, are poorly understood. The present study utilized an improved cleaning method for the size-normalized weight (SNW) measurement to estimate the SNW of N. pachyderma (sin.) in surface sediments from the Amundsen Sea, the Ross Sea, and the Prydz Bay in the Antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean. It was found that SNW of N. pachyderma (sin.) is not controlled by deep-water carbonate dissolution post-mortem, and can be therefore, used to reflect the degree of calcification. The comparison between N. pachyderma (sin.) SNW and environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, nutrient concentration, and carbonate system) in the calcification depth revealed that N. pachyderma (sin.) SNWs in the size ranges of 200–250, 250–300, and 300–355 µm are significantly and positively correlated with seawater temperature. Moreover, SNW would increase by ∼30% per degree increase in temperature, thereby suggesting that the calcification of N. pachyderma (sin.) in the modern Antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean is mainly controlled by temperature, rather than by other environmental parameters such as ocean acidification. Importantly, a potential increase in calcification of N. pachyderma (sin.) in the Antarctic Zone to produce CaCO3 will release CO2 into the atmosphere. We report carbon isotopic values in total organic carbon (TOC) and pyrogenic carbon (PyC) preserved in two sediment cores from the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The δ13C values of PyC ranged from −10.9‰ to −17.2‰, with distinct differences from the δ13C values of TOC (−24.1‰ to −26.1‰) in the sediments. The radiocarbon ages of PyC were 9,128 and 8,410 years old on average in the two cores but were thousands of years younger than the ages of TOC at the same core depth. These isotopic records provide strong evidence indicating that the PyC was produced from ancient wildfires predominantly in C4 vegetation and transported to Antarctica in the atmosphere. We suggest that ancient wildfires in predominantly C4 grasslands likely frequently occurred on a large scale and at a high intensity in the Southern Hemisphere during the last deglaciation to mid‐Holocene period of 14,800–4,200 years ago. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted the attention of the industry due to their low cost, good environmental friendliness, and competitive gravimetric energy density. However, zinc anodes, similar to lithium, sodium and other alkali metal anodes, are also plagued by dendrite problems. Zinc dendrites can penetrate through polymer membranes, and even glass fiber membranes which seriously hinders the development and application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. To resolve this issue, certain additives are required. Here we have synthesized an electrochemical graphene oxide with novel electrolyte based on tryptophan, which allows to obtain few-layered sheets with a remarkably uniform morphology, good aqueous solution dispersion, easy preparation and environmental friendliness. We used this electrochemical graphene oxide as an additive to the electrolyte for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The results of phase-field model combined with experimental characterization revealed that the addition of this material effectively promotes the uniform distribution of the electric field and the Zn-ion concentration field, reduces the nucleation overpotential of Zn metal, and provides a more uniform deposition process on the metal surface and improved cyclability of the aqueous Zn-ion battery. The resultant Zn∣Zn symmetric battery with the electrochemical graphene oxide additive affords a stable Zn anode, which provided service for more than 500 h at 0.2 mA cmâˆ'2 and even more than 250 h at 1.0 mA cmâˆ'2. The Coulombic efficiency (98.7%) of Zn∣Cu half-cells and thus cyclability of aqueous Zn-ion batteries using electrochemical graphene oxide is significantly better compared to the additive-free electrolyte system. The East Siberian Continental Margin is a major constituent of the western Arctic Ocean, ideal for studying the evolutionary history of the Siberian Ice Sheet (SIS) based on its unique geographical location and medium‐depth bathymetry. For this study, the sedimentary core CHINARE‐ARC07‐E25 (E25) was analyzed, revealing nearly continuous stable oxygen isotope and mineralogy records that preserved scenarios of the SIS development. Lithostratigraphic evidence suggests that the stratigraphic range of E25 extends to marine isotope stage (MIS) 7. Stable oxygen isotope analysis reveals multiple strong, light‐oxygen isotopic excursions since the penultimate glacial, accompanied by multiple patterns of ice rafted debris content and mineralogy. Based on these isotopic events, the potential factors causing the excursions and the provenance of drainage were evaluated. It was found that the excursion events recorded in pink‐white carbonate detritus layers could be related to the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The most typical events, occurring during the deglaciation periods of MIS6/5e and MIS4/3 to early MIS3, were characterized by involving a mixture of two or more sources, and could be used to trace the activity of the SIS, which has been ignored in previous studies. Findings of this study are expected to advance the understanding of SIS contribution to the western Arctic Ocean basin development, which is important for interpreting global climate change behavior of similar ice sheets in the Arctic region. The results show that the freshwater events recorded in the Mendeleev Ridge sediments show strong and mixed‐provenance inputs, while an increase in plagioclase, illite, and chlorite during deglaciation may indicate the contribution of the SIS. This not only suggests that the SIS was a potential source of freshwater of the Arctic Ocean, but also provides evidence of its earlier expansion (MIS6), in addition to new perspectives for evaluating the ice sheet activities and corresponding paleoenvironmental changes. Seepage and heat transfer in the carbonate reservoir under low-temperature tail water reinjection is a complex coupling process, which is an important basis for scientific and reasonable evaluation of geothermal resource sustainability. This study based on the tracer test of double-well reinjection for carbonate heat reservoir, a coupling model of seepage field and temperature field of fracture network is established by using the finite element software COMSOL. The uncertainty analysis is carried out to study the fluid-thermal coupling process of carbonate fracture under the condition of low-temperature tail water reinjection.The variation law of seepage field and temperature field of thermal reservoir under low-temperature geothermal tail water reinjection is revealed, The variation of measured temperature of thermal reservoir pumping side under different reinjection conditions is predicted. The results show that the dominant fracture channels between wells of the fractured heat reservoir in Xian county geothermal field play an important role in controlling the seepage heat transfer. Under the coupling action of the seepage field, pressure field and the temperature field of the heat reservoir, the low-temperature tail water reinjection forms a preferential flow along the dominant channels, which is one of the important factors to consider in the prediction of thermal breakthrough. Reinjection pressure, temperature and well spacing are the main factors for artificial control of geothermal production and reinjection system. In the pumping and reinjection system of Xian county geothermal field, under the conditions of 0.5 MPa reinjection pressure, 30 °C reinjection tail water temperature and 270 m spacing between pumping and reinjection wells, the heat reservoir temperature at the pumping side decreased by 1.5 °C in 100 years. Processes controlling environmental change in the subarctic Pacific Ocean on millennial to orbital timescales are not well understood. Here we use a 230‐kyr sedimentary record from the northwest Pacific Ocean to assess the response of late Pleistocene sediment dynamics to orbital forcing. Combining a source‐to‐sink perspective based on sedimentological records with climate model reanalysis, we reveal that fluctuations in sediment provenance were closely linked to obliquity‐forced changes in atmospheric circulation modes. Specifically, the position of the Aleutian Low controlled sediment transport from the Bering Sea and Aleutian Arc sources. Furthermore, a distinct shift in North Pacific ocean circulation during the Last Glacial Maximum may have been related to a strengthened Siberian High. The coincidence of atmospheric mode switches with changes in sea‐ice extent and North Pacific Intermediate Water formation in the marginal seas suggests that this coupled ocean‐atmosphere system may have acted as a regional amplifier of global climate variability. The grain size distribution of bulk sediment samples was decomposed in a core to reconstruct paleoceanographic evolution over the past 60 ka in the northern Norwegian Sea. The results show that sediments consisted of 3–4 grain populations derived from the North Atlantic Current (NAC) and Barents Ice Sheet (BIS). The grain size data suggest three palaeoceanographic evolution stages: (1) an environment affected by BIS and NAC and changed with the interstadial/stadial transition in phase with the Greenland ice-core record at 60–31 ka BP, during which discharge of icebergs and the content of the coarsest population containing ice-rafted debris (IRD) in the sediments increased significantly during stadial, while the fine silt population containing volcanic glasses increased with the enhancement of NAC during the interstadial; (2) an extreme environment controlled by BIS at 31–13 ka BP. BIS reached to its maximum at about 31 ka BP and the turbid plumes that formed at the leading edge of BIS contributed to a significant increase in the clayey population in sediments. Icebergs drained into the northern Norwegian Sea with periodical calving of the BIS at 31–19 ka BP. Subsequently, the ablation of the BIS discharged massive floods with clayey sediments and icebergs into the Norwegian Sea at 19–13 ka BP, resulting in a constant increase in clay and IRD in sediments; and (3) a marine environment similar to the present one under the strong influence of NAC following the complete melting of the BIS after 13 ka BP, NAC is the dominant transport agent and no IRD occurred in sediments. North Pacific Ocean sediments are important archives of geomagnetic field and paleoenvironmental evolutions, yet late Quaternary sedimentary sequences in the North Pacific Ocean are less explored because of generally low sedimentation rates and the challenge of dating sediments deposited below the calcite compensation depth. Core NP02 sediments from the North Pacific Ocean contain three visible tephra layers, which are identified as the To‐Of, Spfa‐1, and Kt‐3 tephra, respectively. An age model for core NP02 is established based on tephra correlation and one radiocarbon date, which gives a mean sedimentation rate of ∼11.6 cm/kyr. Magnetic analyses suggest the dominance of two remanence carriers; detrital vortex state and biogenic single domain magnetite. Variable depth offsets between the relative paleointensity (RPI) signals carried by the two remanence carriers adds a negligible age error (<0.5 kyr) to the core NP02 RPI record. Pronounced RPI amplitude variations are observed, and the Rockall and Laschamp excursions are identified in the core NP02 RPI record based on the age model. The fidelity of the core NP02 RPI record is further verified by comparison with other RPI stacks and records, and we demonstrate that the RPI variations can assist in chronology refinement. This paper systematically summarizes the domestic achievements in the exploration and development of geothermal resources, analyzes the endowment, distribution, and accumulation mechanism of geothermal resources in China, and points out the main problems existing in the exploration and development of geothermal resources in China. On this basis, it looks forward to China's urgent geothermal exploration and development work and key technologies to be urgently developed, providing important guidance for China's geothermal science and technology innovation and rapid industrialization development. We analyzed the biogenic silica (BSi) content and produced a diatom-based summer sea-surface temperature (SST) reconstruction for sediment core GC4 from the Holsteinsborg Dyb, West Greenland. Our aim was to reconstruct marine productivity and climatic fluctuations during the last millennium. Increased BSi content and diatom abundance suggest relatively high marine productively during the interval of AD 1000–1400, corresponding in time to the Medieval Warm Period (MWP). The summer SST reconstruction indicates relatively warm conditions during AD 900–1100, followed by cooling after AD 1100. An extended cooling period during AD 1400–1900 is characterized by prolonged low in reconstructed SST and high sea-ice concentration. The BSi values fluctuated during this period, suggesting varying marine productivity during the Little Ice Age (LIA). There is no significant correlation between the BSi content and SST during the last millennium, suggesting that the summer SST has little influence on marine productively in the Holsteinsborg Dyb. A good correspondence between the BSi content and the element Ti counts in core GC4 suggests that silicate-rich meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet was likely responsible for changes in marine productively in the Holsteinsborg Dyb. Paleoceanographic evidence commonly indicates that Last Glacial Maximum surface temperatures in the Japan Sea were comparable to modern conditions, in striking difference to colder neighboring regions. Here, based on a core from the central Japan Sea, our results show similar UK′37‐ and TEXL86‐derived temperatures between 24.7 and 16.3 ka BP, followed by an abrupt divergence at ~16.3 ka BP and a weakening of divergence after ~8.7 ka BP. We attribute this process to a highly stratified glacial upper ocean controlled by the East Asian Summer Monsoon, increasing thermal gradient between surface and subsurface layers during the deglaciation and the intrusion of Tsushima Warm Current since the mid‐Holocene, respectively. Therefore, we suggest that threshold‐like changes in upper‐ocean temperatures linked to sea level rise and monsoon dynamics, rather than just sea surface temperatures, play a critical role in shaping the thermal and ventilation history of this NW Pacific marginal sea. For the first time, ice‐rafted debris provenance related to the Quaternary glacial discharge and circulation was constrained using radiogenic Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes from a sedimentary record (Core BN05) from the central Arctic Ocean. The record is composed of glacial/interglacial intervals estimated to span ~0.5 Ma (Marine Isotope Stages [MIS] 1–14). Nd versus Sr isotope data show two end member groups, further elaborated using Pb isotopes. Glacial data mostly point at North American sources with unradiogenic εNd and high 87Sr/86Sr values, including detrital carbonate (dolomite) layers originating from Paleozoic rocks eroded by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The opposite end member group including estimated MIS6 and MIS4 samples indicates the Siberian Large Igneous Province eroded by the Eurasian Ice Sheet as the major source, possibly with additional inputs from the East Siberian Ice Sheet. The limited evidence for Siberian Ice Sheet provenance may result from the predominant distribution of this glaciation on the continental shelf providing weak, fine‐grained sediments. Glacial‐time western Arctic circulation inferred from isotopic data is mostly similar to the modern Beaufort Gyre but was more streamlined toward the Fram Strait during some glacial events. Interglacial/major interstadial, presumably sea ice transported sediments, shows a mixture of North American and Siberian sources, consistent with historically observed variations in the Transpolar Drift versus Beaufort Gyre circulation. Isotope pattern in major interglacials (e.g., MIS5e, MIS11, and MIS 13) resembles the recent trend of increased sediment ice transport from the East Siberian/Chukchi Sea, possibly in relation to the ongoing Arctic warming. We report quantitative carbon isotope evidence showing that porewater dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is produced from different sources in Arctic Ocean sediments, resulting in dramatic changes in both δ13C and Δ14C values of DOC. The very low δ13C (−42.7‰) and Δ14C (−947‰) values measured for porewater DOC indicate that bacteria consume methane hydrate‐derived OC and convert a significant fraction of this δ13C depleted and old OC (44–97%) into DOC in the sediments of the Arctic Ocean. We suggest that the production of extremely old, methane‐derived porewater DOC (5,430–23,600 years) in Arctic Ocean sediment is an important pathway for carbon cycling that provides not only a necessary energy source for microbial communities in this extreme environment but also an ancient DOC source that could flux and contribute to the old and biologically recalcitrant DOC found in the deep ocean. In this study, we present radiocarbon and stable carbon isotope results measured for porewater DOC and sedimentary solid phase total organic carbon in sediment cores collected from the Arctic Ocean. We find that the carbon isotopic signatures of porewater DOC differed dramatically between samples produced from mostly marine‐derived organic matter (δ13C = −22.9‰, Δ14C = −80‰) in the Chukchi Sea shelf and samples produced from methane hydrate‐derived organic matter (δ13C = −42.7‰, Δ14C = −947‰) on the Arctic slope. We estimate that in the slope region, 44–97% of the extremely old DOC preserved in the sediment was produced from methane hydrate. The production of this ancient, methane‐bearing porewater DOC could be an important but insufficiently studied pathway for carbon cycling that provides not only a necessary energy source for microbial communities in the Arctic sediment but also an ancient DOC source that could contribute to the old and biologically recalcitrant DOC found in the deep ocean. This paper presents the first detailed study of a late Pleistocene marine tephra sequence from the NW Pacific, downwind from the Kamchatka volcanic arc. Sediment core SO201‐2‐40, located on the Meiji Rise ~400 km offshore the peninsula, includes 25 tephras deposited within the last 215 ka. Volcanic glass from the tephras was characterized using single‐shard electron microprobe analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry. The age of tephras was derived from a new age model based on paleomagnetic and paleoclimate studies. Geochemical correlation of distal tephras to Kamchatkan pyroclastic deposits allowed the identification of tephras from the Karymsky, Gorely, Opala and Shiveluch eruptive centers. Three of these tephras were also correlated to other marine and terrestrial sites and hence are identified as the best markers for the north‐west Pacific region. These are an early Holocene tephra from the Karymsky caldera (~8.7 ka) and two tephras falling into the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 glacial time: an MIS 6.4 tephra from Shiveluch (~141 ka) and the MIS 6.5 Rauchua tephra (~175 ka) from Karymsky. The deep-ocean carbon cycle, especially carbon sequestration and outgassing, is one of the mechanisms to explain variations in atmospheric CO2 concentrations on millennial and orbital timescales. However, the potential role of subtropical North Pacific subsurface waters in modulating atmospheric CO2 levels on millennial timescales is poorly constrained. An increase in the respired CO2 concentration in the glacial deep-ocean due to biological pump generally corresponds to deoxygenation in the ocean interior. This link thus offers a chance to study oceanic ventilation and coeval export productivity based on redox-controlled sedimentary geochemical parameters. Here, we investigate a suite of geochemical proxies in a sediment core from the Okinawa Trough to understand sedimentary oxygenation variations in the subtropical North Pacific over the last 50 000 years (50 ka). Our results suggest that enhanced mid-depth western subtropical North Pacific (WSTNP) sedimentary oxygenation occurred during cold intervals and after 8.5 ka, while oxygenation decreased during the Bölling-Alleröd (B/A) and Preboreal. The enhanced oxygenation during cold spells is linked to the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), while interglacial increase after 8.5 ka is linked to an intensification of the Kuroshio Current due to strengthened northeast trade winds over the tropics. The enhanced formation of the NPIW during Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) was likely driven by the perturbation of sea ice formation and sea surface salinity oscillations in the high-latitude North Pacific. The diminished sedimentary oxygenation during the B/A due to a decreased NPIW formation and enhanced export production, indicates an expansion of the oxygen minimum zone in the North Pacific and enhanced CO2 sequestration at mid-depth waters, along with the termination of atmospheric CO2 concentration increase. We attribute the millennial-scale changes to an intensified NPIW and enhanced abyss flushing during deglacial cold and warm intervals, respectively, closely related to variations in North Atlantic Deep Water formation. The Mariana Trough, a relatively simple intra-oceanic back-arc basin, is ideal for investigating magmatic processes and mantle-crust interaction in a subduction setting. We present new major- and trace element compositions for 31 basaltic lava and glass samples from the Mariana Trough back-arc spreading center. The studied lavas include phenocrysts of plagioclase, olivine and pyroxene. Major element compositions show that these lavas range from tholeiitic basalt to basaltic andesite, and belong to a sub-alkali tholeiitic series produced by fluid-influenced fractional crystallization of primary basaltic melts. Trace element compositions show that these lavas are transitional between typical normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) and island arc basalt (IAB), and are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and light rare earth elements (LREEs). Trace element ratios, e.g., Ba/Th, Pb/Ce, Th/Nd, La/Sm, Th/Nb, Ba/Nb and Th/Nb, indicate that the mantle from which these lavas were derived underwent modification resulting from the addition of multiple subduction components. Some typical trace element ratios (e.g., Ba/Nb- total subduction component, Ba/Th- shallow subduction, and Th/Nb-deep subduction component) from our new data and the literature suggest that a latitudinal variation exists in addition to subduction components, and indicates a more complex and heterogeneous distribution of subduction components in the Mariana back-arc region. We suggest that, (1) compared to back-arc locations at 18° N and 15.5° N, lavas from back-arc locations at 17° N indicate higher levels of modification by hydrous fluid released from the subducted slab, and (2) compared to back-arc locations at 17° N and 15.5° N, petrogenesis of lavas from back-arc locations at 18° N indicates a greater influence of sediment melt. There are two distinctly different views on Quaternary sedimentation rates in the central Arctic Ocean, namely, that they were on cm/kyr or on mm/kyr scales, largely as a result of divergent interpretations of magnetic reversal stratigraphy. This study provides new evidence to help resolve this controversy in the form of an almost 1‐m‐thick negative polarity interval located at ~1.15 m below the seafloor in a 4.15‐m‐long sediment core from the Lomonosov Ridge, central Arctic Ocean. This thick polarity anomaly was first revealed through alternating field demagnetization of natural remanent magnetization on u‐channel samples. It was subsequently confirmed to be an authentic signal of a syndepositional geomagnetic field by integrating detailed rock magnetic studies, transmission electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses of magnetic extracts, and both alternating field and thermal demagnetization of discrete paleomagnetic samples. Here we conclude that it is more reasonable to interpret the reversed interval as a record of the Matuyama Chron rather than a Brunhes‐aged excursion, which yields mean sedimentation rates of ~1.5 mm/kyr and ~0.5 mm/kyr in the Brunhes and Matuyama Chrons, respectively. These estimates are remarkably lower than assumed in most recent studies, but in good agreement with both previous magnetostratigraphic and recent geochemical studies relative to the decay of Be and U‐series isotopes, which might indicate "sediment‐starved" environments at least in some parts of this region. Overall, our results not only imply that chronostratigraphy in the central Arctic Ocean remains open to debate but also warrant further investigations in this microfossil‐barren region. The energy reserves of hot dry rock resources are huge, thus a model to predict engineering production for efficient and stable development and utilization is sought. Based on the geological characteristics of dry rock resources in Guide Basin, Qinghai Province, China, the fully coupled wellbore–reservoir simulator—T2Well—is used to model a production system using water as a heat transfer medium and simulate the system's operation to analyze the influence of different injection rates on heat extraction. In later production stages, output temperature and reservoir pressure decrease by 10–30°C and 0.5–30 MPa, depending on injection rate; this occurs earlier and to a greater extent at higher injection rates; thermal breakthrough also occurs earlier (7–10 years). The heat extraction rate is 1–20 MW and the cumulative heat extracted is 2.1–24.2 × 105 J. Lower injection rates result in relatively low heat extraction rates. In the study, we analyzed the hot dry rock geothermal field of the Guide Basin in Qinghai Province, China. We used T2Well software—a coupled wellbore–reservoir simulator—to build a "wellbore–reservoir" coupled model with a "three-spot" well pattern (one injection and two production wells). We simulated several fixed flow rate cases in which water or CO2 is injected. The objectives of our present work are (1) to investigate the fluid flow and thermal processes of water circulating at well bottoms, wellbores, and wellheads; (2) to identify the changing parameters at all physical fields; (3) to understand the influence of injection rates on heat extraction; and (4) to measure the maximum heat extraction capacity of the Guide area. Water extracts more heat than CO2 at the same flow rate. However, water consumes more pressure in reservoir, and its pressure decreases more quickly as the flow rate increases. In contrast, CO2 is in a sense a better working fluid. CO2 consumes less pressure when it flows and can circulate automatically due to the siphon phenomenon. In this way, a lower injection pressure is required in a higher CO2 flow rate case. The density of CO2 is sensitive to both temperature and pressure and vice versa. Inside a wellbore, such interactions are extremely complicated. When the fluid rate is slow, a system could operate for 30 years and remain stable, and there is only a small decrease in temperature. However, with higher flow rate scenarios—namely 50, 75, and 100 kg/s—the reservoir will exhibit greater heat loss. The reservoir's production temperature and extraction efficiency will drop dramatically. Therefore, for the Guide area, if a "three-spot" well pattern is used for geothermal extraction either with water or CO2 as the working fluid, the most appropriate flow rate is 50 kg/s. Despite being located at higher latitudes with seasonal ice-cover, the Bering shelves and slope are still one of the most productive regions of the world. Existing reports regarding marine production of the Bering Sea are mainly confined to its high water column production and high biomass of macrobenthos. Compared with biomass, secondary production estimates are more functionally based and have assumed a fundamental role in the quantification of ecosystem dynamics. Based on Brey's empirical model (in: Brey, Population dynamics in benthic invertebrates. A virtual handbook, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Germany, 2001), macrobenthic production across the majority of the Bering Sea was quantified during the 4th, 5th and 6th Chinese Arctic Scientific Expeditions. Mean total production (TP) and community P/B for the entire survey area were 220.6 ± 341.5 kJ m−2 year−1 and 0.4 ± 0.2 year−1, n = 46, respectively. Higher TP occurred in the shallower shelves and slope with values exceeding 131.0 kJ m−2 year−1, whereas lower TP occurred in the deep basin with values of 1.0 kJ m−2 year−1. Comprehensive analysis revealed that the sediment, water flow, temperature and depth were the major factors affecting the macrobenthic production. Owing to the relatively high biological production in the upper water column and the tight pelagic-benthic coupling, higher production occurred in the shallow shelves and slope, particularly in the northern Bering Sea. In contrast, the high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll characteristic and deficient particulate organic carbon input led to low production in the deep basin. Similar to the conditions in the Arctic and Antarctic, the energy conversion rate of macrozoobenthos was relatively low for the Bering Sea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the first time, the reconstruction of variations in the duration over several hundred years was conducted on the basis of models developed by comparing hydrometeorological observations and detailed scanning of the chemical composition of bottom sediments accumulated during the corresponding period. The gauge models for the reconstruction of air temperature and ice cover of the water area for three sites in the northern part of the Chukchi Sea have been developed. During the reconstruction, an insignificant increase in the duration of the ice-free period during the Little Ice Age was established, which does not coincide with the changes in the temperature regime that took place. It is concluded that the dynamics of the inflow of warm Pacific waters through the Bering Strait had the predominant influence on the ice regime of the Chukchi Sea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was to investigate bacterial and archaeal community structure of pan-Arctic Ocean sediments by pyrosequencing. In total, investigation of three marine sediments revealed 15 002 bacterial and 4 362 archaeal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) at the 97% similarity level. Analysis of community structure indicated that these three samples had high bacterial and archaeal diversity. The most relatively abundant bacterial group in Samples CC1 and R05 was Proteobacteria, while Firmicutes was dominant in Sample BL03. Thaumarchaeota was the most relatively abundant archaeal phylum in Samples CC1 and R05, and the relative abundance of Thaumarchaeota was almost as high as that of Euryarchaeota in Sample BL03. These two phyla accounted for nearly 100% of the archaeal OTUs. δ-Proteobacteria and γ-Proteobacteria were the two most relatively abundant classes at Proteobacterial class level, and their relative abundance was more than 60% in Samples CC1 and R05. There were also differences in the top 10 relatively abundant bacterial and archaeal OTUs among the three samples at the 97% similarity, and only 12 core bacterial OTUs were detected. CO is now considered as a novel heat transmission fluid to extract geothermal energy. It can achieve the goal of energy exploitation and CO geological sequestration. Taking Zhacanggou as research area, a 'Three-spot' well pattern (one injection with two production), 'wellbore-reservoir' coupled model is built, and a constant injection rate is set up. A fully coupled wellbore-reservoir simulator-T2Well-is introduced to study the flow mechanism of CO working as heat transmission fluid, the variance pattern of each physical field, the influence of CO injection rate on heat extraction and the potential and sustainability of heat resource in Guide region. The density profile variance resulting from temperature differences of two wells can help the system achieve 'self-circulation' by siphon phenomenon, which is more significant in higher injection rate cases. The density of CO is under the effect of both pressure and temperature; moreover, it has a counter effect on temperature and pressure. The feedback makes the flow process in wellbore more complex. In low injection rate scenarios, the temperature has a dominating impact on the fluid density, while in high rate scenario, pressure plays a more important role. In most scenarios, it basically keeps stable during 30-year operation. The decline of production temperature is <5 °C. However, for some high injection rate cases (75 and 100 kg/s), due to the heat depletion in reservoir, there is a dramatic decline for production temperature and heat extraction rate. The contribution of phytoliths to total biogenic silica (BSi) volumes in rivers worldwide, and the associated implications for the biogeochemical cycle, require in-depth study. Based on samples from rivers in Peninsular Malaysia, this project investigated the source and characteristics of BSi found in Asian tropical rivers, as well as the process of reverse weathering taking place in these fluvial systems. Results indicated that BSi samples collected in sediments consisted of phytolith, diatom and sponge spicules. Phytoliths, predominantly of the elongate form, comprised 92.8%-98.3% of BSi in the Pahang River. Diatom BSi in this river consisted mainly of pennatae diatoms, but represented a relatively small proportion of the total BSi volume. However, diatom BSi (predominantly of the Centricae form) was more prevalent in the Pontian and Endau Rivers with shares of 68.8% and 79.3% of the total BSi volumes, respectively, than Pahang River. Carbon contents of the BSi particulates ranged from 1.85% to 10.8% with an average of 4.79%. These values are higher than those recorded in other studies to date, and indicate that BSi plays a major role in controlling permanent carbon burial. This study suggests that phytoliths from terrestrial plants are the primary constituents of BSi in the rivers of Peninsular Malaysia, and therefore represent a significant proportion of the coastal silica budget. ABSTRACT Millennial-scale monsoon variability has been investigated intensively using loess-based proxies; however, the amplitude and rhythms of millennial-scale signals have seldom been disentangled from the background glacial-interglacial changes. Here we present the results of high-resolution scanning X-ray fluorescence analysis of a 75-m-thick loess sequence from the north-western Chinese Loess Plateau to address glacial-interglacial to millennial monsoon variability over the last two climatic cycles. Variations of the Si/K, Fe/K and Ca/K ratios are separated spectrally into low- and high-frequency components corresponding to glacial-interglacial and millennial-scale monsoon variability, respectively. The results indicate that the three elemental ratios exhibit similar glacial-interglacial variability but with varying spectral densities at the 100-, 41- and 23-kyr periodicities. Millennial-scale variability is quite similar between the three elemental ratios, and comparable to those inferred from records of Chinese speleothem δ18O, Greenland palaeotemperature and North Atlantic cooling events. Comparison of various proxies indicates the broad similar magnitudes of abrupt climate changes, at least during the last two glacial-interglacial cycles, whereas the timing and amplitude of abrupt climatic events are not well correlated. We suggest that refinement of loess chronology and intensive data-model integration in the future are critical to decipher the characteristics and dynamics of rapid monsoon changes. A high resolution record of sea-ice concentration on the North Icelandic shelf during the last millennium has been reconstructed using a diatom-based sea-ice transfer function. The reconstructed sea-ice record for the top of sediment core MD99-2275 exhibits a slightly increasing trend over the last 1000 years. Prior to AD 1300 sea-ice abundance was generally below the mean value, suggesting the strong influence of warm waters from the Irminger Current during the Medieval Warm Period. A marked increase of sea-ice concentration indicates an abrupt change to colder conditions after AD 1300, corresponding to the onset of the Little Ice Age. The agreement between the reconstructed sea-ice concentration and IP data obtained from the same core, as well as with historical records of Icelandic sea ice, suggests that diatoms may provide a valuable tool for future quantitative reconstructions of past sea-ice variability. In addition, agreement between changes in the reconstructed sea-ice record and variations in the abundance of the major diatom components indicates that sea-ice conditions on the North Icelandic shelf are generally strongly influenced by changes in the strength of two different water masses, the cold Polar water periodically derived from the East Greenland Current and the warm Irminger Current derived from the North Atlantic Current. Our proxy evidence also indicates that variations in solar activity have a considerable impact on ocean dynamics, which in turn affects sea-ice abundance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
