Background: Lipid management in clinic is critical to the prevention and treatment of Chronic kidney disease (CKD), while the manifestations of lipid indicators vary in types and have flexible association with CKD prognosis. Purpose: Explore the associations between the widely used indicators of lipid metabolism and their distribution in clinic and CKD prognosis; provide a reference for lipid management and inform treatment decisions for patients with non-dialysis CKD stage 3–5. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study utilizing the Self-Management Program for Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Cohort (SMP-CKD) database of 794 individuals with CKD stages 3–5. It covers demographic data, clinical diagnosis and medical history collection, laboratory results, circulating lipid profiles and lipid distribution assessments. Primary endpoint was defined as a composite outcome(the initiation of chronic dialysis or renal transplantation, sustained decline of 40% or more in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), doubled of serum creatinine (SCr) from the baseline, eGFR less than 5 mL/min/1.73m2, or all-cause mortality). Exposure variables were circulating lipid profiles and lipid distribution measurements. Association were assessed using Relative risks (RRs) (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) computed by multivariate Poisson models combined with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression according to categories of lipid manifestations. The best model was selected via akaike information criterion (AIC), area under curve (AUC), receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and net reclassification index (NRI). Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed to assess the interaction effects and robustness.. Results: 255 individuals reached the composite outcome. Median follow-up duration was 2.03 [1.06, 3.19] years. Median age was 58.8 [48.7, 67.2] years with a median eGFR of 33.7 [17.6, 47.8] ml/min/1.73 m2. Five dataset were built after multiple imputation and five category-based Possion models were constructed for each dataset. Model 5 across five datasets had the best fitness with smallest AIC and largest AUC. The pooled results of Model 5 showed that total cholesterol (TC) (RR (95%CI) (per mmol/L) :1.143[1.023,1.278], P = 0.018) and percentage of body fat (PBF) (RR (95%CI) (per percentage):0.976[0.961,0.992], P = 0.003) were significant factors of composite outcome. The results indicated that comprehensive consideration of lipid metabolism and fat distribution is more critical in the prediction of CKD prognosis.. Although acid‐sensing ion channels (ASICs) are proton‐gated ion channels responsible for sensing tissue acidosis, accumulating evidence has shown that ASICs are also involved in neurosensory mechanotransduction. However, in contrast to Piezo ion channels, evidence of ASICs as mechanically gated ion channels has not been found using conventional mechanoclamp approaches. Instead, ASICs are involved in the tether model of mechanotransduction, with the channels gated via tethering elements of extracellular matrix and intracellular cytoskeletons. Methods using substrate deformation‐driven neurite stretch and micropipette‐guided ultrasound were developed to reveal the roles of ASIC3 and ASIC1a, respectively. Here we summarize the evidence supporting the roles of ASICs in neurosensory mechanotransduction in knockout mouse models of ASIC subtypes and provide insight to further probe their roles in proprioception. Background: Time-restricted feeding (TRF) has become a popular weight loss method in recent years. It is widely used in the nutritional treatment of normal obese people and obese people with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension, and has shown many benefits. However, most TRF studies have excluded chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, resulting in a lack of sufficient evidence-based practice for the efficacy and safety of TRF therapy for CKD. Therefore, we explore the efficacy and safety of TRF in overweight and obese patients with moderate-to-severe stage CKD through this pilot study, and observe patient compliance to assess the feasibility of the therapy. Methods: This is a prospective, non-randomized controlled short-term clinical trial. We recruited overweight and obese patients with CKD stages 3-4 from an outpatient clinic and assigned them to either a TRF group or a control diet (CD) group according to their preferences. Changes in renal function, other biochemical data, anthropometric parameters, gut microbiota, and adverse events were measured before the intervention and after 12 weeks. Results: The change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) before and after intervention in the TRF group (D = 3.1 ± 5.3 ml/min/1.73m² ) showed significant improvement compared with the CD group (D = -0.8 ± 4.4 ml/min/1.73m² ). Furthermore, the TRF group had a significant decrease in uric acid (D = -70.8 ± 124.2 mmol/L), but an increase in total protein (D = 1.7 ± 2.5 g/L), while the changes were inconsistent for inflammatory factors. In addition, the TRF group showed a significant decrease in body weight (D = -2.8 ± 2.9 kg) compared to the CD group, and body composition indicated the same decrease in body fat mass, fat free mass and body water. Additionally, TRF shifted the gut microbiota in a positive direction. Conclusion: Preliminary studies suggest that overweight and obese patients with moderate-to-severe CKD with weight loss needs, and who were under strict medical supervision by healthcare professionals, performed TRF with good compliance. They did so without apparent adverse events, and showed efficacy in protecting renal function. These results may be due to changes in body composition and alterations in gut microbiota. Objective: This study investigated how peripheral axonal excitability changes in ischemic stroke patients with hemiparesis or hemiplegia, reflecting the plasticity of motor axons due to corticospinal tract alterations along the poststroke stage. Methods: Each subject received a clinical evaluation, nerve conduction study, and nerve excitability test. Nerve excitability tests were performed on motor median nerves in paretic and non-paretic limbs in the acute stage of stroke. Control nerve excitability test data were obtained from age-matched control subjects. Some patients underwent excitability examinations several times in subacute or chronic stages. Results: A total of thirty patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled. Eight patients were excluded due to severe entrapment neuropathy in the median nerve. The threshold current for 50% compound muscle action potential (CMAP) was higher in paretic limbs than in control subjects. Furthermore, in the cohort with severe patients (muscle power ≤ 3/5 in affected hands), increased threshold current for 50% CMAP and reduced subexcitability were noted in affected limbs than in unaffected limbs. In addition, in the subsequent study of those severe patients, threshold electrotonus increased in the hyperpolarization direction: TEh (100–109 ms), and the minimum I/V slope decreased. The above findings suggest the less excitable and less accommodation in lower motor axons in the paretic limb caused by ischemic stroke. Conclusion: Upper motor neuron injury after stroke can alter nerve excitability in lower motor neurons, and the changes are more obvious in severely paretic limbs. The accommodative changes of axons progress from the subacute to the chronic stage after stroke. In this paper, we present a wound-dressing-based antenna fabricated via screen-printed and inkjet-printed technologies. To inkjet print a conductive film on wound dressing, it must be screen-printed, UV-curable-pasted, and hard-baked to provide appropriate surface wettability. Two passes were UV-curable-pasted and hard-baked at 100 °C for 2 h on the wound dressing to obtain 65° WCA for silver printing. The silver film was printed onto the wound dressing at room-tempature with 23 μm droplet spacing for three passes, then sintered at 120 °C for 1 h. By optimizing the inkjet printing conditions by modifying the surface morphologies and electrical properties, three-pass printed silver films with 3.15 μm thickness and 1.05 × 107 S/m conductivity were obtained. The insertion losses at the resonant frequency (17 and 8.85 GHz) were −2.9 and −2.1 dB for the 5000 and 10,000 μm microstrip transmission lines, respectively. The material properties of wound dressing with the relative permittivity and loss-tangent of 3.15–3.25 and 0.04–0.05, respectively, were determined by two transmission line methods and used for antenna design. A quasi-Yagi antenna was designed and implemented on the wound-dressing with an antenna bandwidth of 3.2–4.6 GHz, maximal gain of 0.67 dBi, and 42% radiation efficiency. The bending effects parallel and perpendicular to the dipole direction of three fixtures were also examined. The gain decreased from 0.67 to −1.22 dBi and −0.44 dBi for a flat to curvature radius of 5 cm fixture after parallel and perpendicular bending, respectively. Although the maximal gain was reduced with the bending radius, the directivity of the radiation pattern remained unchanged. The feasibility of a wound-dressing antenna demonstrates that inkjet-printed technology enables fast fabrication with low cost and environmental friendliness. Additionally, inkjet-printed technology can be combined with sensing technology to realize remote medical monitoring, such as with smart bandages, for assessment of chronic wound status or basic physical conditions. Hippocampal pyramidal cells and interneurons play a key role in spatial navigation. In goal-directed behavior associated with rewards, the spatial firing pattern of pyramidal cells is modulated by the animal's moving direction toward a reward, with a dependence on auditory, olfactory, and somatosensory stimuli for head orientation. Additionally, interneurons in the CA1 region of the hippocampus monosynaptically connected to CA1 pyramidal cells are modulated by a complex set of interacting brain regions related to reward and recall. The computational method of reinforcement learning (RL) has been widely used to investigate spatial navigation, which in turn has been increasingly used to study rodent learning associated with the reward. The rewards in RL are used for discovering a desired behavior through the integration of two streams of neural activity: trial-and-error interactions with the external environment to achieve a goal, and the intrinsic motivation primarily driven by brain reward system to accelerate learning. Recognizing the potential benefit of the neural representation of this reward design for novel RL architectures, we propose a RL algorithm based on Q -learning with a perspective on biomimetics (neuro-inspired RL) to decode rodent movement trajectories. The reward function, inspired by the neuronal information processing uncovered in the hippocampus, combines the preferred direction of pyramidal cell firing as the extrinsic reward signal with the coupling between pyramidal cell–interneuron pairs as the intrinsic reward signal. Our experimental results demonstrate that the neuro-inspired RL, with a combined use of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards, outperforms other spatial decoding algorithms, including RL methods that use a single reward function. An unusual eastward flow was observed branching out from the Kuroshio Current near the island of Taiwan in the western North Pacific in during the period June–July 2010. The branch meandered eastward approximately 21°N, carrying high chlorophyll-a (Chla) waters for over 1000 km from 125°E into the nutrient-poor North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSG). The branch was warmer and fresher than the surrounding waters, with temperature–salinity properties resembling those of Kuroshio Current. Thus, we called it the eastward cross-shore Kuroshio branch (ECKB). Injecting fresher waters far into the central NPSG, the ECKB flowed at a mean surface speed of 0.5 m per second, as shown in satellite altimeters, a Lagrangian drifter, and the Japan-Meteorological-Agency (JMA) 137°E-meridian cruise transect. The mechanism of the ECKB was linked to a surface cyclonic wind anomaly to the north at approximately 22–24°N. The cyclonic wind anomaly cooled the ocean surface beneath it via Ekman suction and then enhanced the subtropical front to its south at approximately 21°N near the Kuroshio Current. The strengthened subtropical front subsequently induced an eastward flow that bifurcated from the main stream of the northward-flowing Kuroshio Current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tropomyosin (TM) is an important crustacean (Scylla paramamosain) allergen. This study aimed to assess Maillard-reacted TM (TM-G) induction of allergenic responses with cell and mouse models. We analyzed the difference of sensitization and the ability to induce immune tolerance between TM and TM-G by in vitro and in vivo models, then we compared the relationship between glycation sites of TM-G and epitopes of TM. In the in vitro assay, we discovered that the sensitization of TM-G was lower than TM, and the ability to stimulate mast cell degranulation decreased from 55.07 ± 4.23% to 27.86 ± 3.21%. In the serum of sensitized Balb/c mice, the level of specific IgE produced by TM-G sensitized mice was significantly lower than TM, and the levels of interleukins 4 and interleukins 13 produced by Th2 cells in spleen lymphocytes decreased by 82.35 ± 5.88% and 83.64 ± 9.09%, respectively. In the oral tolerance model, the ratio of Th2/Th1 decreased from 4.05 ± 0.38 to 1.69 ± 0.19. Maillard reaction masked the B cell epitopes of TM and retained some T cell epitopes. This research addresses the omitted-uncertainty bias and functional form misspecification problem when estimating the saving-investment relationship. We apply a semiparametric varying-coefficient cointegration approach to test for the presence of an 'uncertainty-varying' cointegrating relationship between savings and investment. Based on quarterly time series data for the U.S. from 1947Q1 to 2014Q4, we find that the saving-retention coefficient is a U-shaped function of economic policy uncertainty. This indicates that domestic investment is more constraint by domestic savings at very high and very low levels of uncertainty. Given the continued rise in economic policy uncertainty, our estimate predicts that domestic investment will become more constrained by domestic savings. Further sub-period analysis shows that the null hypothesis of the presence of an uncertainty-varying cointegrating relationship between savings and investment cannot be rejected in the recent sub-period of 1999Q1-2014Q4, suggesting that the U.S current account is sustainable. Administration of 12-(3-adamantan-1-yl-ureido)-dodecanoic acid (AUDA) has been demonstrated to alleviate infarction following ischemic stroke. Reportedly, the main effect of AUDA is exerting anti-inflammation and neovascularization via the inhibition of soluble epoxide hydrolase. However, the major contribution of this anti-inflammation and neovascularization effect in the acute phase of stroke is not completely elucidated. To investigate the neuroprotective effects of AUDA in acute ischemic stroke, we combined laser speckle contrast imaging and optical intrinsic signal imaging techniques with the implantation of a lab-designed cranial window. Forepaw stimulation was applied to assess the functional changes via measuring cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) that accompany neural activity. The rats that received AUDA in the acute phase of photothrombotic ischemia stroke showed a 30.5 ± 8.1% reduction in the ischemic core, 42.3 ± 15.1% reduction in the ischemic penumbra (p < 0.05), and 42.1 ± 4.6% increase of CMRO2 in response to forepaw stimulation at post-stroke day 1 (p < 0.05) compared with the control group (N = 10 for each group). Moreover, at post-stroke day 3, increased functional vascular density was observed in AUDA-treated rats (35.9 ± 1.9% higher than that in the control group, p < 0.05). At post-stroke day 7, a 105.4% ± 16.4% increase of astrocytes (p < 0.01), 30.0 ± 10.9% increase of neurons (p < 0.01), and 65.5 ± 15.0% decrease of microglia (p < 0.01) were observed in the penumbra region in AUDA-treated rats (N = 5 for each group). These results suggested that AUDA affects the anti-inflammation at the beginning of ischemic injury and restores neuronal metabolic rate of O2 and tissue viability. The neovascularization triggered by AUDA restored CBF and may contribute to ischemic infarction reduction at post-stroke day 3. Ankle foot orthosis (AFO) is widely used to prevent foot drop and improve walking ability for individuals with cerebral palsy and stroke. However, traditional anterior AFO (TAAFO) could only last within months because the bilateral neck of TAAFO was easy to break. Currently, a 3D-printing technique is used to develop assistive devices for rehabilitation. The study aimed to implement the finite element (FE) method to revise the 3D printed AAFO (3DP-AAFO) and evaluate its strength. A 3.2 mm-thickness for the TAAFOs and 3DP-AAFOs were fabricated, respectively. The stiffness of TAAFO and 3DP-AAFO were tested by a material machine and compared to the FE model. In the FE analysis, the thickness of AAFO model was increased at the neck to enhance its strength. A plantarflexion and dorsiflexion moment were respectively subjected to 3DP-AAFO models to undergo stress analysis. Under the mechanical test, the 3DP-AAFO (K = 1.09 Nm/degree) was 7.8 times stiffer than the traditional AAFO (K = 0.14 Nm/degree). The FE results showed that thickening the 3DP-AAFO on the neck up to 4.7 mm could moderate stress concentration and increase the stiffness of the 3DP-AAFO. Therefore, the study concluded that the 3DP-AAFO was stiffer than the traditional AAFO. Increasing the appropriate thickness around neck of 3DP-AAFO could avoid neck fracture as much as possible. Aims/Introduction: To elucidate whether axonal changes arise in the prediabetic state and to find a biomarker for early detection of neurophysiological changes. Materials and Methods: We enrolled asymptomatic diabetes patients, as well as prediabetic and normoglycemic individuals to test sensory nerve excitability, and we analyzed those findings and their correlation with clinical profiles. Results: In nerve excitability tests, superexcitability in the recovery cycle showed increasing changes in the normoglycemic, prediabetes and diabetes cohorts (−19.09 ± 4.56% in normoglycemia, −22.39 ± 3.16% in prediabetes and −23.71 ± 5.15% in diabetes, P = 0.002). Relatively prolonged distal sensory latency was observed in the median nerve (3.12 ± 0.29 ms in normoglycemia, 3.23 ± 0.38 ms in prediabetes and 3.45 ± 0.43 ms in diabetes, P = 0.019). Superexcitability was positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.291, P = 0.009) and glycated hemoglobin (r = 0.331, P = 0.003) in all participants. Conclusions: Sensory superexcitability and latencies are the most sensitive parameters for detecting preclinical physiological dysfunction in prediabetes. In addition, changes in favor of superexcitability were positively correlated with glycated hemoglobin for all participants. These results suggest that early axonal changes start in the prediabetic stage, and that the monitoring strategy for polyneuropathy should start as early as prediabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: In this study, we produced reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by reduction of graphene oxide (GO) in Teflon‐lined autoclave, maintained at 100°C for 12 hours, and coated on the anode gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a proton‐exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) to improve the cell performance. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed the presence of residual oxygen‐containing functional groups in RGO. Field‐emission scanning electron microscopy images revealed the uniform and adequate coating of the GDLs with RGO. The wettability of RGO‐coated GDL was determined by the sessile drop method and has optimum contact angle 117°. The power densities for the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with RGO coated on the anode GDL were 30.92%, 41%, and 36.20% higher than those for the MEA without the RGO coating at anode gas humidified temperatures of 25°C, 45°C, and 65°C, respectively. The identification of homologous genes with functional overlap in forward genetic screens is severely limited. Here, we report the generation of over 14000 artificial microRNA (amiRNA)-expressing plants that enable screens of the functionally redundant gene space in Arabidopsis. A protocol was developed for isolating robust and reproducible amiRNA mutants. Examples of validation approaches and essential controls are presented for two new amiRNA mutants that exhibit genetically redundant phenotypes and circumvent double mutant lethality. In a forward genetic screen for abscisic acid (ABA)-mediated inhibition of seed germination, amiRNAs that target combinations of known redundant ABA receptor and SnRK2 kinase genes were rapidly isolated, providing a strong proof of principle for this approach. A new ABA-insensitive amiRNA line that targets three avirulence-induced gene 2 (-like) genes was isolated. A thermal imaging screen for plants with impaired stomatal opening in response to low CO2 exposure led to the isolation of a new amiRNA targeting two essential proteasomal subunits, PAB1 and PAB2. The seed library of 11000 T2 amiRNA lines (with 3000 lines in progress) generated here provides a new platform for forward genetic screens and has been made available to the Arabidopsis Biological Resource Center (ABRC). A hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a‐Si:H) thin‐film transistor (TFT) gate driver with multioutputs (eight outputs per stage) for high reliability, 10.7‐inch automotive display has been proposed. The driver circuit is composed of one SR controller, eight driving TFTs (one stage to eight outputs) with bridging TFTs. The SR controller, which starts up the driving TFTs, could also prevent the noise of gate line for nonworking period. The bridging TFT, using width decreasing which connects between the SR controller and the driving TFT, could produce the floating state which is beneficial to couple the gate voltage, improves the driving ability of output, and reaches consistent rising time in high temperature and low temperature environment. Moreover, 8‐phase clocks with 75% overlapping and dual‐side driving scheme are also used in the circuit design to ensure enough charging time and reduce the loading of each gate line. According to lifetime test results, the proposed gate driver of 720 stages pass the extreme temperature range test (90°C and −40°C) for simulation, and operates stably over 800 hours at 90°C for measurement. Besides, this design is successfully demonstrated in a 10.7‐inch full HD (1080 × RGB×1920) TFT‐liquid‐crystal display (LCD) panel. A series of five-membered ring aluminum complexes bearing thiol-Schiff base ligands were synthesized, and their application in the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (CL) was investigated. The complexes exhibited dramatically higher catalytic activity than the six-membered ring S2AlMe2 complex (approximately 4- to 10-fold higher) and the five-membered ring L5-PhAlMe2 complex (approximately 7- to 19-fold higher). Moreover, a shorter induction period was observed when the five-membered ring aluminum complexes bearing thiol-Schiff base ligands were used compared with the other types of aluminum complexes bearing Schiff base ligands. The electron-withdrawing groups enhanced the catalytic activity of the Al complexes compared with the electron donating groups. The thiol-Schiff base ligand and the five-membered ring aluminum catalysis had a synergistic effect that was stronger than the combination of their individual effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This study examines the evolution of the distribution of life expectancy (LE) at birth and at ages 20 and 60 years using the stochastic kernel framework. It finds that the period between 1990 and 2013 exhibits a decrease in LE at birth dispersion and also shows that σ‐divergence and polarization of LE at ages 20 and 60 occur across countries. Further deterioration (improvement) in relative position of countries with low (high) starting LE is observed in some sections of the LE distribution. The dispersion in LE and intradistribution movements can be attributed to genealogically transmitted human barriers to technology diffusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been proposed that malto-oligosaccharides (MOSs) are possibly recycled back into amylopectin biosynthesis via the sequential reactions catalyzed by plastidial α-glucan phosphorylase 1 (Pho1) and disproportionating enzyme 1 (Dpe1). In the present study, the reciprocal co-immunoprecipitation experiments using specific antibodies against Pho1 and Dpe1 demonstrated that these two enzymes can form a complex (the PD complex) in Ipomoea batatas storage roots. The immunohistochemistry analyses also revealed the co-localization of Pho1 and Dpe1 in the amyloplasts, and the protein levels of Pho1 and Dpe1 increased gradually throughout sweet potato storage root development. A high molecular weight PD complex was co-purified from sweet potato storage root lysates by size exclusion chromatography. Enzyme kinetic analyses showed that the PD complex can catalyze maltotriose and maltotetraose to generate glucose-1-phosphate in the presence of inorganic phosphate, and it also performs greater Dpe1 activity toward MOSs than does free form Dpe1. In the present study, three concentrations of FeCl3 were applied to the Cd-contaminated soils at two solid-to-solution ratios, and 1-3 washes were applied. The Cd removal percentages increased with the number of washes. An optimal treatment for removing Cd from the soil was a solid-to-solution ratio of 1/2 using 45 mM FeCl3 and three washes. However, the application of FeCl3 decreased the soil pH values, increased the soil electrical conductivity, and also changed the exchangeable concentrations of cations. This paper uses a semiparametric latent variable transformation model for multiple outcomes to examine the effect of education and maternal education on female multidimensional well-being and proposes a procedure to build a well-being index that is less susceptible to functional form misspecification. We model multidimensional well-being as an unobserved common factor underlying the observed well-being outcomes. The semiparametric methodology allows us to alleviate misspecification bias by combining multiple indicators into a latent construct in an unspecified, data-driven way. Using data from female participants of the 1974-2010 waves of the US General Social Survey, we find that education, intelligence, and maternal education contribute positively to multidimensional well-being. However, the effects of education and maternal education on female multidimensional well-being declined steadily between the mid-1970s and the 1990s, and have not rebounded since. Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynaecological disease because of the high mortality rate and there is no any symptom in cancer early stage. It was often the terminal cancer period when patients were diagnosed with ovarian cancer and thus delays a good opportunity of treatment. The current common method for detecting ovarian cancer is blood testing for analyzing the tumor marker CA-125 of serum. However, specificity and sensitivity of CA-125 are insufficient for early detection. Therefore, it has become an urgent issue to look for an efficient method which precisely detects the tumor markers for ovarian cancer. This study aims to find the target genes of ovarian cancer by different algorithms of information science. Feature selection and decision tree were applied to analyze 9600 ovarian cancer-related genes. After screening the target genes, candidate genes will be analyzed by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) software to create a genetic pathway model and to understand the interactive relationship in the different pathological stages of ovarian cancer. Finally, this research found 9 oncogenes associated with ovarian cancer and some genes had not been discovered in previous studies. Purpose: The aims of the study were (1) to understand the relationship between women's marital coping efforts and body image as well as sexual relationships and (2) to test a hypothesized model suggesting that marital coping efforts have a mediating effect on the relationship between body image and sexual relationships among breast cancer survivors. Methods: A total of 135 breast cancer survivors who had finished cancer treatment completed a self-reported questionnaire concerning body image, marital coping efforts, and sexual relationship. Results: Body image, marital coping, and sexual relationship were found to be significantly correlated with each other. The final path model showed that negative marital coping efforts, including avoidance and self-blame, significantly mediated the effect of women's body image on their sexual relationships. Although a positive approach did not correlate with body image, it did significantly correlate with women's sexual relationships. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that negative marital coping using self-blame and avoidance mediated the association between body image and sexual relationship. Future interventions to address the body image and sexual life of breast cancer survivors should be considered using positive approaches that prevent disengaged avoidance or self-blame coping efforts intended to deal with marital stress. In a digital society, people have access to all kinds of electronic information as online users. They have also contributed various content for exchanging ideas in the online community, which has not only extended the traditional knowledge sharing channels, but has also led to concerns about content quality and reliability. The literature suggests that user involvement in collaboratively evaluating the quality of online content for an online community is likely to be an effective means to ease these concerns. However, the understanding of users' intentions to be willing to take part in evaluating online content is still limited. Based on self-determination theory, this study proposes a research model to understand the extrinsic motivation of the user intention. The research model was tested using data collected from 303 participants who were recruited from online communities. The results show that three types of extrinsic motivation, namely identified motivation, introjected motivation, and external motivation, play an important role in user intention of collaboratively evaluating online content. In addition, the research findings suggest that user satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness influences different types of extrinsic motivation. The previous literature on working memory (WM) has indicated that verbal materials are dominantly retained in phonological representations, whereas other linguistic information (e.g., orthography, semantics) only contributes to verbal WM minimally, if not negligibly. Although accumulating evidence has suggested that multiple linguistic components jointly support verbal WM, the visual/orthographic contribution has rarely been addressed in alphabetic languages, possibly due to the difficulty of dissociating the effects of word forms from the effects of their pronunciations in relatively shallow orthography. In the present study, we examined whether the orthographic representations of Chinese characters support the retention of verbal materials in this language of deep orthography. In Experiments 1a and 2, we independently manipulated the phonological and orthographic similarity of horizontal and vertical characters, respectively, and found that participants' accuracy of probed serial recall was reduced by both similar pronunciations and shared phonetic radicals in the to-be-remembered stimuli. Moreover, Experiment 1b showed that only the effect of phonological, but not that of orthographic, similarity was affected by concurrent articulatory suppression. Taken together, the present results indicate the indispensable contribution of orthographic representations to verbal WM of Chinese characters, and suggest that the linguistic characteristics of a specific language not only determine long-term linguistic-processing mechanisms, but also delineate the organization of verbal WM for that language. Topics discussed include the medical history of the patient, the results of the physical and histopathological examinations performed such as skin biopsy and complete blood cell count, and the administration of oral indomethacin and cyproheptadine which improved the patient's skin condition.

This paper aims to compare productivity and technical efficiency (TE) between outsourcers and non-outsourcers with an empirical methodology that accounts for both heterogeneous production technologies and non-random sample separation. Using plant-level data on six two-digit manufacturing industries in Taiwan over the period 2002–2005, the endogenous switching regression and the stochastic metafrontier methodology enable us to generate TE scores that are comparable across production units that operate under different technologies without the standard assumption in the literature that the outsourcing status is out of the control of the plant and that outsourcers and non-outsourcers use the same technology. We find that outsourcers are, on average, more technically efficient and technologically advanced than non-outsourcers. The paper examines whether the effect of inequality on growth varies with the level of economic development. Using a comprehensive panel of annual data for the 48 contiguous US states over the period 1945-2004, we find overwhelming evidence in support of threshold effects in the relationship between inequality and growth. Our analysis shows that while the effect of inequality on growth is significantly negative at lower levels of development, this effect diminishes along the growth process and then turns significantly positive at higher levels of development. Quantitatively, the coefficient estimates imply that when real income per capita is below the threshold of $12,140 (2004 US dollar), a one standard deviation increase in the share of income held by the top 1% of the population reduces the growth rate of real per capita income by 0.6479 percentage points. In contrast, when income per capita is above the threshold of $21,065 (2004 US dollar), a one standard deviation increase in the top percentile income share raises the rate of growth of real per capita income by 0.2561 percentage points. TRAIL (TNFSF10/Apo2L) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily of proteins and is expressed in human and rodent testis. Although the functional role of TRAIL in spermatogenesis is not known, TRAIL is recognized to induce apoptosis via binding to its cognate receptors; DR4 (TRAIL-R1/TNFRSF10A) and DR5 (TRAIL-R2/TNFRSF10B). Here, we utilize Trail gene-deficient (Trail−/−) mice to evaluate the role of TRAIL in spermatogenesis by measuring testis weight, germ cell apoptosis, and spermatid head count at postnatal day (PND) 28 (pubertal) and PND 56 (adult). Trail−/− mice have significantly reduced testis to body weight ratios as compared to wild-type C57BL/6J at both ages. Also, Trail−/− mice (PND 28) show a dramatic increase in basal germ cell apoptotic index (AI, 16.77) as compared to C57BL/6J (3.5). In the testis of adult C57BL/6J mice, the AI was lower than in PND 28 C57BL/6J mice (2.2). However, in adult Trail−/− mice, the AI was still higher than that of controls (9.0); indicating a relative high incidence of germ cell apoptosis. Expression of cleaved caspase-8 (CC8) and cleaved caspase-9 (CC9) (markers of the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathway, respectively) revealed a two-fold increase in the activity of both pathways in adult Trail−/− mice compared to C57BL/6J. Spermatid head counts in adult Trail−/− mice were dramatically reduced by 54% compared to C57BL/6J, indicating these animals suffer a marked decline in the production of mature spermatozoa. Background To investigate the function of transient receptor potential melastatin 2 (TRPM2) in vascular reactivity induced by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the aorta during development of atherosclerosis in mice. Methods Forty mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: C57BL/6J on normal diet (C57 + ND), C57BL/6J on high-fat diet (C57 + HFD), apolipoprotein E gene knockout mice (ApoE−/−) on ND (ApoE−/− + ND), and ApoE−/− on HFD (ApoE−/− + HFD). They were fed with a ND or HFD for 16 weeks. Aortic TRPM2 expression and isometric contractions were analyzed. Results In the ApoE−/− + HFD group, body weight, blood glucose, and blood lipid concentrations were increased, and aortic plaques were developed. Compared with the other 3 groups, aortic TRPM2 mRNA and protein levels were significantly increased in the ApoE−/− + HFD group (P < 0.01). Aortic reactivity to 5-HT was enhanced in ApoE−/− + HFD mice with lower EC50 values. The enhanced reactivity to 5-HT was significantly inhibited by TRPM2 inhibitors, N - p -amylcinnamoyl anthranilic acid (1 µmol/l) and 2-aminoethyl diphenylborinate (10 µmol/l). Conclusions Aortic TRPM2 expression is upregulated in ApoE knockout mice fed with a HFD. Upregulation of TRPM2 enhances 5-HT vascular reactivity during development of atherosclerosis. This article uses the generalized likelihood ratio test to formally test whether the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and income inequality varies with the level of human capital and then uses a flexible semiparametric smooth coefficient partially linear model to provide estimates of the inequality effect of FDI that are specific to the level of human capital in a country. Based on the data of 102 countries over the period 1970-2007, we find the following. First, there exists substantial heterogeneity in the inward FDI-inequality relationship. Inward FDI is inequality-ameliorating in low-income countries where human capital is scarce but is inequality-raising in middle- and high-income countries where human capital is abundant. Second, contrary to the conventional mindset, outward FDI has no significant impact on inequality in low-and high-income countries. Nevertheless, outward FDI is inequality-raising in middle-income countries with low levels of human capital. Our results demonstrate that accounting for parameter heterogeneity is critical to identify the key mechanisms through which FDI affects inequality.
